You weren’t there when it happened, but somehow you could tell something was wrong from the moment he called you and asked if he could come over

It was really late- much later than you had ever expected his parents to let him out but you just couldn’t say no to him

Especially when he sounded like that

Once he arrived at your doorstep, you managed to sneak him inside and up to your room without a problem but there was still the issue at hand

Why he called you sounding so…so defeated

But you got an answer pretty quickly

It started the moment you got him inside your room and locked the door behind you

In an instant, he just collapsed into your arms- almost knocking you off your feet

Somehow, you’re able to maneuver both of you onto your bed but he never once lets go of you

In fact, you must have spent an hour just combing through his hair while listening to him softly sniffle against your chest

When he finally does open up- it’s nothing but quiet murmurs of something that you know isn’t the full picture but the pain is more than evident in his voice as he asks you all kinds of questions

Do you think he’s worthless? Do you think he’s a pain in the ass? Do you enjoy being around him? Was he and his family and Junes the worst thing that happened to your home? Do you even like being his girlfriend? Do you want to break up? Is he even worthy of your love?

It’s heartbreaking to watch but you don’t press on his secrets- you know he’ll share what he wants when the time is right

So you continue to brush your fingers through his hair and you add on a few kisses to his forehead and his nose and his cheeks and his lips for good measure

And you tell him how much he means to you and to his family and to his friends

And how he’s not this cursed existence that he may think he is

You tell him that he deserves to be loved no matter what anyone else may say or think

And for the first time in the hours since he arrived at your house, you finally get a smile out of him

It’s lined with freshly shed tears, but Rome wasn’t built in a day

You’ll take it one step at a time- and you’ll do it all for him

Naoto studied him out of the corner of their eye, noting how tense his shoulders were and how he began to chew on his lip. “Is that really what you wanted to talk about? Everyone leaving Inaba?”

Kanji stopped walking, and Naoto slowed to a stop next to him.

“You don’t miss anything, do ya? Though I guess that’s on me for askin’ to talk in private.” His laugh was nervous, and he started fiddling with one of the bracelets he was wearing. He blurted out, “I…I need to tell you something, and I’m hoping it doesn’t change anything between us. Will you hear me out?”

Naoto frowned, immediately concerned. “Certainly. Whatever it is, I promise it won’t.” She wagered there were few things Kanji could tell her that would change her opinion of him.

There were a long few moments of silence where Kanji simply nodded in response and cleared his throat, sounding as though he was working himself up to something.

You ever have thought that spirals too much because this did fix my burn out but at what cost? Either way I thought “Persona 4 Reverse Recruitment” and then a full fic plan was in my google docs, so, um, here you go.

When he tries to step past her, Chie steps to the side and blocks his path. He opens his mouth to snap at her again, but she doesn’t look angry. Instead, she considers him for a moment, before she says, “Hit me.”

You know what I always find super weird in persona 4 fanfics? When the writers either imply or have someone outright say that Yu/Souji didn't have any friends or was kind of a loner before coming to Inaba. Like in the opening cutscene we see him on the train thinking back to when his teacher announced his transfer and was met with students outright upset and surprised and Yu/Souji looking upset.

Yu/Souji is a pretty likeable guy, I mean he managed to get all of yasogami high to like him in a matter of months, I can't believe that he was a loner—especially not that he had no friends.

What I can believe though is that he struggled to form genuine connections, and that maybe Inaba was the first time he's managed to not just be like-able, but form deeper bonds with others and come out the other end with not just "friends" that talked after class, but people who loved him.

(Is this just projecting as someone who also struggles to not just be liked by others, but have real, genuine friendships? Maybe a little, but I think it's fitting for his character.)

Yu/Souji has never been a loner, but that doesn't mean he wasn't lonely. He was someone who maybe wanted something more and just didn't know how to have those types of friendships, but at some point became complacent with it and found comfort in at least knowing people liked him even if no one really knew him. And so starting all over, losing even that little comfort would be scary and upsetting. It would explain why he seems uneasy about it too. He's scared of having to go through that again and come out the other side just as lonely or even worse off than before. He feared the isolation he already felt would only grow especially now that he wasn't just a somewhat awkward guy who no one ever takes the time to get to know, but now he's the outsider—the city boy moved to Inaba.

And that's also why Yosuke's first gesture of friendship is also so important and why their bond as "partners" is equally as meaningful to Yu/Souji as it is to Yosuke. Even if Yosuke reached out for his own reasons, he felt just as isolated and alone as Yu/Souji probably did when arriving and connected with him through it. It was probably the first time someone understood the way he felt. Yosuke was the first person to not just talk to him, but actually spend time with him and get to know him. Same could be said of Chie and Yukiko as they invited him to walk home together and showed interest in him as a person.

Yu/Souji isn't a guy who never had friends. In a kinda heartbreaking way, he would probably have told you he had lots of friends, it's just none of them were all that deep. Bringing in unrelated characters into the story would be stupid on any writer's part, but we never even hear in passing about any of his old friends trying to stay in touch. They were nothing more than friendships of convenience.

Hmmmmm that is a tough one because I read so many fanfictions on a daily basis xD but i will try my best.

My absolute favourite has got to be Shed Skin by Penguinabominations and snowxhanyouxqueen

It’s a fanfiction from the Yakuza franchise and is set within an alternative Version of Yakuza 0. An absolutely fantastic read, a gorgeous writing style and intriguing characterisation of Kiryu and Majima. Highly recommend it, but please read the tags first for potential Triggers.

This fanfic man… It lowkey broke me. Another Yakuza fanfiction this time focussing on my favourite character from the franchise: Ichiban Kasuga. The fanfic heavily discusses themes of SA but in a respectful manner. But still only read this if you are in a mentally safe place. But like shed skin, this fan fiction NAILS the characterisation of the cast, with its dialogue sounding like it could be straight from the game itself.

As for the reason why my username is Otaku-tyriq, the story behind it is actually pretty boring. When i was 11 i realised i was genderfluid and literally just googled "genderneutral names” and found the name Tyrik. So i changed the letter k to a q for my tumblr name and most of my social media handles as most usernames with the name Tyrik was usually already taken.

The otaku part of my username is self explanatory. I’m a geek who loves japanese pop culture and media. An otaku.
