"Adam Diment is a spy novelist who published four novels between 1967 and 1971. All four are about the adventures of Philip McAlpine whom critic Anthony Boucher described as "an agent who smokes hashish, leads a highly active sex life, kills vividly, uses (or even coins) the latest London slang and still seems a perfectly real (and even oddly likeable) young man rather than a reflected Bond image."

Diment disappeared from public view after his last novel, adding to his cult figure status among fans of 1960s spy novels. According to The Observer, by 1975 Diment was living in Zurich, shunning publicity, and had no plans to write further novels". Info from Wiki

music i love - five seconds flat (2022)

This album just does something to me that I can’t describe. The way I have developed an emotional, personal attachment to this record is something uncanny for myself. Being familiar with Lizzy McAlpine from her rise to fame on TikTok, and her song “Apple Pie” graciously shown to me by my girlfriend, five seconds flat was a new, breath-taking experience. It builds upon her prodigal composition skills and superb songwriting, while also expanding on her mellow, acoustic, melancholic sound. One we were previously familiar with on her debut record. There is something about five seconds flat that allows it to be melodic and soothing at times, or angry and grungy, or cheery and buoyant. The record is as versatile as it is consistent; Lizzy shows she isn’t afraid of taking risks or going outside of her bubble.

There is a story being told as the track list progresses, and by the pre-concluding track, “chemtrails”, it’s put into its entire perspective. Speaking about the closer, chemtrails, first is important because it symbolizes a type of loss yet to be explored on a the record: death. "chemtrails" is about Lizzy maneuvering life without her late-father, consistent with the theme of the album. Longing and loss are at the heart of the album; it being marketed with theme of skulls, ghosts, and the end of everything. Love is the prevalent theme on five seconds flat; loss of a partner, tragic death of love, the pursuit of love. “all my ghosts” captures this pursuit beautifully, painting an accurate picture of the honeymoon phase, the trauma of heartbreak, and the recklessness that can come with love. There is a lyric that I just love on the 8th track, “ceilings”. The lyric is “and it feels like the start of a movie I’ve seen before”, and it tells us how Lizzy has been here before when falling and love, knowing well how things may end, causing her to hold back from it.  “ceilings” also being the most notable track on the album that projected Lizzy into the mainstream.

Production on five seconds flat also expands on her soft sounding acoustics from her debut record without sacrificing her signature tone, harmonic vocal stacks, or acoustic presence. I absolutely love the way the strings introduce the second chorus of “called you again”, or the funky synth line that takes over the bridge of “erase me”. The mixes are done perfectly to compliment and contrast the grungier moments on “firearm”, or the soothing vocals on “hate to be lame”. Lizzy’s voice manages to compliment the calmer moments with the highs of her range, or fill the mix during punchier chorus lines with the lows. Philip Etherington Ehren Ebbage is credited for the production of this record and he did an outstanding job at transcending the indie, soft-spoken, melodic sound we were used to, to one that improves and expands to a fuller more dynamic tracklist.

As a piece of art, five seconds flat works so well, showcasing lyrically and sonically the highest highs, the lowest lows, and everything in between. It builds personal connections with the listener, giving you a place to cry, scream, shout or whatever. It’s also worth mentioning there is also a whole short film that goes with the tracks on the album. How cool is that? Easily one of my all-time favourites, and my favourite release of 2022. I mean it when I say I would do anything to listen to five seconds flat for the first time again.

Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece. The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie, but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable. The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding. The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused. However, the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting...

Callie and Kacey Musgraves

Connecting Sterling and Shane to a specific album came easy. I listened to their respective albums and went, "Ah, that's Sterling. Yes, that feels like Shane." Because I'm a completionist, I began keeping an ear out for something that would match Callie. I wanted my hat trick, my trifecta, my cord of three strands.

Anyways.

While I had no album for Callie when writing my earliest drafts of Choices, I did have a song, "What I'd Give" by Sugarland, that I heavily associated with her and Sterling. Specifically, her longing for an actual romance with him instead of... *hand waves at Choices: Spring* Once those other albums had clicked for me, however, I began hopping between different albums that might work, but none of them truly hit just right.

To be honest, I really wanted Lizzy McAlpine's five seconds flat to fit the bill because if you slapped a British accent on her voice, that would be how I hear Callie. When Older came out, I had high hopes, but again, it didn't really jive with how Callie felt in my head. But around the same time Older released, I happened upon Kacey Musgraves' Deeper Well.

There it was. I don't know her discography all that well, so I can't really speak to how she as an artist relates to Callie, but that album, man. One, the overall feel/sound to the album slots in nicely next to Hozier and Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever). And two, it has this lovely mix of light whimsy and yet a deep well (ha!) of pain beneath it all.

More detailed thoughts on individual tracks (and potential spoilers for Choices) are underneath the cut:

"Cardinal" makes me think of Callie post-Reece's suicide and in the lead-up to her moving to Stardew Valley. She'd lost everything at that point, and she kept looking for a sign to change her life. Considering her relationship with magic, the bridge hit me pretty hard.

"Deeper Well" is very much her thinking back on Paul and her parents. Both were abusive relationships, though of differing types and degrees. It fits with how she finally left all of it behind, as well as how she turned to substances (alcohol, in Callie's case) to survive it all.

"Too Good to Be True" reflects her thoughts on her relationships with both Philip and Sterling at the beginning of each. Though, with regards to Philip, it could also be a bit of a pun with how things turn out in Choices: Summer.

"Moving Out" is a reflection on, well, I shouldn't spoil too much....

For Sterling there's "Giver/Taker" for that last night in Spring, later on "Dinner with Friends" for things that'll happen in Fall, "Jade Green" for the latter half of Winter, and both "Heaven Is" and especially "Nothing to be Scared Of" as the endgame for her and Sterling in Choices.

"Heart of the Woods" feels ready-made for Callie and the Junimos. Also, Callie really does buy into the idea that people, deep-down, do want to look out for each other and help one another.

When it comes to Callie's thoughts on her mother's side of the family, "Lonely Millionaire" fits to a tee. Her mum comes from money. Her dad was the son of a poor country boy who became ensnared by the lifestyle marrying her mum brought about, even if it made him utterly beholden to her parents. Money was used as a method of control on Callie, and while she worries about money constantly due to that, she also knows through bitter experience that money is no substitute for love.

"The Architect" is genuinely what sold me on the album for Callie, though, particularly this verse:

I thought that I was too broken And maybe too hard to love I was in a weird place, then I saw the right face And the stars and the planets lined up

There's a scene that happens early in Fall that is perfectly summarized by that verse.

It's just such a good album, and combined with Hozier's Hozier for Sterling and and Noah Kahan's Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever) for Shane, they all come together to make a cohesive feel, even if those respective albums aren't what the characters in question would actually listen to.

Fans have fallen for Corrie star Jennie McAlpine's wall print, as seen on This Morning – here's where you can buy it

One of the perks of lockdown has been getting to have virtual nosy around some of our favourite celebrity homes. Today, ITV’s This Morning offered us a glimpse inside Jennie McAlpine’s home.

Jennie is best known for playing Fiz, and was chatting to Philip and Holly about fans have labelled her and Tyrone the next ‘Jack and Vera’ – referring of course to soap favourites The Duckworths.

The Coronation Street star’s interiors caused quite a stir among fans, not to mention the Ideal Home team. However, it was her lovely bee wall art that stole the show.

The lovely photo is of the Manchester Bee found on the mosaic floor in the Town Hall in Manchester, and is available to buy from a local Mancunian photographer.

The print is by Paul Grogan Photography. Paul is based in Manchester and his pretty photographic print is available in two sizes. The images in the large version are 30cm x 30cm and mounted inside a black or white frame that measures 50cm x 50cm. The frame is made from matte finish wood with perspex instead of glass so that the print is lighter to hang.

Priced at £45, the large version of the print has proven incredibly popular. There is currently only one left in stock, so you will need to act quickly to pick one up.

However, you can still pick up the smaller version for just £25. The small-framed version measures 13cm x 13cm and sits inside a 25cm x 25cm frame.

The Manchester Bee has long been part of Manchester’s history, and in 1840 it was even added into the Manchester coat of arms.

In May 2017, it became a symbol of unity in the wake of the Manchester Arena bombing.In fact, Paul told Ideal Home exclusively that he sold out of the print during that time – and kindly donated 50 per cent of all profits to charity. What a star!

It is a symbol that clearly means a lot to the actress who has lived near Manchester all her life. At the 2017 soap awards, wearing her Manchester bee earrings, she dedicated the cast’s attendance to ‘Corrie’ superfan Martyn Hett who did in the terrorist attack.
