Pile 1: earth

The earth element brings up that you are learning to find the open and free person that is within you and to channel that but we get discouraged and dragged down by the expectations of life like finishing something you had put a lot much energy into. You need to really focus on your accomplishments and if you are not proud of yourself when thinking about how far you have come then there is something going on.

There is a miscommunication of some type in your brain where you can’t be proud of yourself unless you can fully show it and so procrastination may plague this pile but the earth element is here to be a source of motivation. There is a breakthrough here in these cards that is ripe and ready to come into your life and this procrastination will stop holding you back. There is a big strong message to believe in yourself and to ask yourself why if any part of you finds it ridiculous to do that.

Don’t you deserve to be considered even if it is from yourself? These things can be hard to navigate and you are trying which matters a lot but the true solution I see in these cards is to keep pushing through the procrastination and to ignite the motivation with these consistent acknowledgements on your efforts, also to prioritize rewarding yourself when the task is finished. Find small ways that may push to help you acknowledge how strong you are and to throw away the thoughts that come with the procrastination, sometimes you can’t think just do even if your dragging your feet the completion is huge.

For the people who picked the water element I see this message is about a relationship in your life and finally talking about the issues. I see the element of water acknowledging this connection you have and how you will both be able to come to your own peace and acceptance. Many of you will keep this relationship but there is an acknowledgement over a lesson learned here.

There is something about love and connection, how being honest and coming clean is the only true way to break through barriers. Something tested this close relationship and it has taken space and time to come to a peaceful understanding of what happened and what doesn’t work. I also see something about taking accountability in these cards like both of you owning up to what both sides may have not done but it’s also acknowledging what was lacking from this relationship.

Many of you probably have an anxiety because I see the doom from the nine of swords next to the star reversed which reads to me of no hope or unable to hope because the hanging possibility of something else added to your plate keeps you on edge but for some of you there is just a lot of tired restless energy. Emotionally your life is unfulfilling at this moment and the air element brings this to your attention because there is hope! It just feels unattainable at this time and that’s enough to keep you away from hoping anything. I see a shift coming for you and to just know that there are blessings that will shift into your view soon, the air element swiftly will bringing you what you may have been lacking.

For you my pile 5 you get a special choice. Many of you probably will not consider this an element and it obviously isn’t but a piece of reality that every being experiences. When I speak of consciousness I am talking about the perspective we all hold individually that exists within. how can we truly know someone has awareness unless we are them?

Consciousness picked you because you have a choice that is very important right now to make and it involves you believing in yourself and knowing that even when things can turn difficult and don’t come out the way we hope; we get discouraged but there is advice to face things head on even under pressure at-least for now if you can. Just because you don’t think you have the capabilities of being in charge does not mean that is true, you believing that you can’t do it is what already seals the deal and takes your power away. We don’t need to be amazing at everything we just need to try and give ourselves some grace, you will get better.

Whatever this choice is, fake it till you make it is the biggest advice consciousness is telling me. We create our personas through experiences and the people around us. What you aren’t seeing is that you are doing all you can and that is awesome, and that the persona you have may not be able to see themselves as a leader type but the soul within you can adapt and channel energy you may not expect you hold. You can learn and maybe even excel. Who knows you may like being in charge. You will surprise yourself with how capable you are and all the good that is coming your way. I see comfort, a celebration, something big that you are looking forward too or will be surprised by. Stop limiting yourself consciousness says, hold up your strengths with pride but let yourself expand too, faking it sometimes is a means of you learning and discovering other abilities you have.

WAIT HANG ON - slamming the brakes on drawing this stupid picture - do you nerds even KNOW the etymology of the word “hobby”? The thing you do for pleasure? The thing you have too many of? The thing you spend too much money on and share with your friends? The thing tumblr probably is to you? Those hobbies?

It comes from a now-kind-of-extinct breed of Irish pony-horse. It was called the Irish Hobby. Supposedly the hobby got its name from the Gaelic word obann, or swift. They definitely were. They’d obann your pants clean off.

Fast tough little bastards, built for rough terrain and renowned for their speed and stamina, hobby horses belonged to the Celts, and their highly annoying style of mounted warfare. but their conquerors liked hobby horses a lot, kept them, used them for themselves, and found them useful enough, despite the fact that they also had famously useful things like mounted knights or horse archers. A lightweight Irish warrior, mounted on a hobby horse, was called a hobelar.

Reportedly and in depictions, hobelars rode without stirrups. Or saddles. Or bridles. Or - well - this is all sounding very improbable, because the hobelars COULDNT have just been charging around basically bare-assed on naked ponies, screaming, and somehow in the process undoing the composure of actual mounted armoured knights. Knights who, I remind you, had stirrups. Stirrups are useful! It’s quite likely the hobelars had some gear. And clothes. and weapons. And the ponies probably had some tack - I am picturing a bellyband that you could at least hang a saddlebag on, and a neck rope for catching the bloody thing, even if not a saddle. But the overall impression, somehow created by people on darling little ponies, was apparently quite striking and fearful.

I mean. God Forbid People Have Hobbies.

Anyway after a while, whatever people became the British had eventually conquered all of the rough terrain that hobbies were best at, and horse archers just got sexier, and mounted knights became aristos, and all the bog and forest people had been subdued, so it was time to sunset the hobelars. but WAIT! Hobby horses are still tremendously fun and appealing! They’re so fast! and you can ride them without a saddle! Sure, they’re not up to the weight of a mounted knight, or indeed a lot of guys… but surely we can still find a use for a hobby or two? In the back garden? Somewhere?

At which point an English king decided to keep hobby horses just for fun. No military application. No further development of the technology. Not for fun. Just as expensive, pleasurable, pets. Just for the joy of the thing.

And that is how hobby (activity done purely for pleasure) comes from hobby horse (small horse) possibly from obann (swift.) they’re very interesting and you should look all this up for yourself! because it sure sounds like Elodie doing a bit, doesn’t it?

Today, Irish Hobbies are functionally nonexistent. References for drawing include the Kerry Bog Pony, the Connemara, and (I personally think) Dartmoors and Exmoors. They’re said to have lent their speed to the Irish Hunter/Sport Horse and from there to the Thoroughbred, but every damn horse in the world claims relation to the Thoroughbred, and they can’t be THAT thoroughly bred.

At any rate - you can never have enough hobbies. Just be glad that yours aren’t expensive beasts with minds of their own, eating their heads off in the pasture! …Unless they are. In which case, you’re part of a proud tradition.

Hi! Do you have any like, bare-bone list of resources for a beginner looking to dip into writing their first novel? I'm at the 'I have a vague premise and character ideas, but no plot' stage, so I spent a significant amount of time browsing through this blog and other writing blogs to see where to go from there, but quickly found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of resources and advice available.

I completely understand! When you're at that stage, everything is overwhelming. What I recommend is narrowing your focus on outlining. (I have a whole Outlining tag here!) Sometimes the only way to get idea to plot is following an established structure. You may not keep to your initial outline, but building it will help generate ideas on how to move forward.

There's many different approaches to outlining. I like the Save The Cat method the most, but finding the right outlining approach is also important. If you are more solid on your characters than your possible plot, you might try the character forward approach that The Right Advice for Writers lays out here. Often, if you can figure out what your character's inner struggle is, you'll be able to build a plot centered on having them confront and overcome (or be overwhelmed by) that struggle.

Find an outline process that works for you. Experiment with other forms if it doesn't. I really find writing it down and using flashcards to lay out ideas so that I can move them around is great for crafting a first draft. Good luck!

My opinion on the Latino Jason Todd headcanon

While I do understand ppl's criticism of the latino Jason todd headcanon and how its kind of racist to make the kid with parents with drug problems as the latino one, to me its more of a reclamation BECAUSE of DC's racism.

Read any 80s/90s batman issue that covers gang violence and drugs, most if not ALL of the criminals are poc; black people and latinos visibly make up the majority in the poorer neighbourhoods in Gotham. Aside from the caricaturist way they r drawn/speak, its not THAT weird cause its a reflection of irl big cities where immigrants and marginalised ppl are often forced to live in such situations, (like most of my dominican family lives in the bronx... it aint racist to say dominicans tend to flock there), BUT...the weird part is when the second a sympathetic character comes from that area, he's white and has a name thats "too fancy for the streets".

Obviously, Jason was created to look like the old robin, so I can't say that the whole "diamond in the rough" situation was purposely a tad bit racist, but its still a lil weird (especially with bruce's comment).

If Jason were a part of the overwhelming demographic in his area, the good-kid-in-a-bad-area trope has less connotations. DC is currently trying to fix this trope is by making crime alley whiter, which isn't bad but they could've just yk... humanised the non-white residents.

I also feel like the messed up way Jason was treated post-death is what makes him so relatable to latino readers. His tragic story of dying while trying to save his only living relative is turned into a lesson for newer vigilantes. Jason's particular disdain for abusers on a few occasions was twisted (by both writers and characters) into him always being dumb, reckless, cocky, angry and disobedient, always violent, never having been able to get over his upbringing. None of those things were true (he was a normal level of reckless and cocky like every other robin, not more), but its an easier narrative to digest compared to how it was in reality; a kid who worked so hard and loved even harder, died to save a woman who couldn't care less about his existence. He was an emotional AND smart kid who wanted so bad to help others get better but was remembered as too emotional (in a bad way).

THIS is the reality for many latino diasporas in day to day life; Theres no question that Latino culture is passionate and emotive, but people from other cultures assume that it is followed by instead of logical. both can coexist. emotion does not mean u have no logic. Emotions can be irrational but they aren't inherently that way, and I wouldn't say that the moments where Jason lashed out as a teenager were irrational (in og runs, not rewrites post red hood), they were mostly done to protect someone (going crazy on abusers, disobeying batman to save sheila, that time he got into a fight at school to defend his friend).

A lot of euro-centric culture is OBSESSED with the idea that rationality is separate from feelings and emotions, but not crying at a funeral doesn't mean you're better than those who do. Emotions are the basis of human ethics and morals, they define the way we interact as a collective and ignoring them does not mean they are not there. Theres no winner to a contest of who can feel the less. And the way Jason's emotions are treated (pre-rh, hes definitely unhinged afterwards lol) is so in line with how white culture tends to punish those who aren't ashamed to feel.

I TOTES UNDERSTAND that some ppl who headcanon Jason as latino are doing it for the complete opposite of reasons, like "oh here some angry emotional guy with druggie parents, haha must be latino". Its weird. I dont like it. And its only brought up so he can swear in spanish in some rlly bad text post where his emotions are getting out. But to me there's so much potential for metanarrative and commentary on how latinos are treated in media that can be exemplified through the way his character is treated. Being latino would add SO MUCH DEPTH to his character and his dynamic with the others.

Rewatched Elemental last night, so I decided to take a break from other projects to sketch the blorbos.

No but it is interesting to comment how Elphaba's story could be also be read as an allegory for people with neurodivergencies, because a lot of elements of her character hit the spot.

She's picked on for being different, she has trouble being social, she's dedicated to a social cause she believes is important, people comment there's something "off" about her, even without the green skin, her family dismiss her struggles insisting her issues aren't as important as Nessarose's (iirc many neurodivergent people don't get diagnosed or their issues are ignored when they live with family members who have a more "visual" disability), she turns very trusting and loving to people who just show her basic kindness, she's passionate about the subject matter she studies (magic), she's very eloquent when speaking, uses her hands a lot when speaking...

Also "I'm not that Girl" hits harder with the allegory because the song then reflects how a person has been shunned by society all their life can't even be allowed to have something as simple as a relationship, since they'll always be seen as undesirable by others for things they cannot control.

Some days I feel like I'm full of beginnings but no endings (sometimes middles that I can "yes and..." my way to finding a beginning for, but no endings). The ADHD urge to start something and never finish I swear on the ancients! Augh! I'm so frustrated! Why, brain, why?!

So anyway, I'm gonna ramble about another new idea under the cut.

Okay so you may or may not remember the very intimidating fic idea that's just Danny living out Cast Away (2000) but instead of an island he's trapped in the destroyed remains of Amity Park. That whole thing hinged on no one knowing who Danny was and having to uncover what happened while trying to help Danny basically learn how to be alive again.

But what if we borrow a little from Danny was the first villain AU? Instead of hiding the destruction of Amity, the GIW blame Phantom and use it to justify themselves despite no further ghost attacks happening. They basically celebrate themselves as having done the job of defeating the "Ghost King Phantom" (he wasn't/isn't, but the rest of the world doesn't know that) and all his minions, but look at the cost! They have to make sure this never happens again. (We could have the GIW basically become CADMUS after there were no more ghost attacks but meta humans were becoming the new concern.)

I'm thinking instead of some random kids calling because they saw a ghost floating over a field of half buried corpses, they instead were a bunch of teens sneaking into Amity because it's where the first supervillain was defeated (and then they saw said villain guarding a field of half buried corpses).

Instead of coming in all gentle to try and help this unknown spirit move on, the heroes come in hot with basically the entire JLD and half the JL ready to find and thwart the return a conqueror tyrant they believe to be on par with Trigon or Darkseid.

And Danny? Has no idea. He woke up alone in an empty, abandoned, destroyed city. I bet he still fixed up a radio at some point out of pure boredom but that's only going to have so much news and well... he's stuck. None of that's going to ever affect him. The weather forecast is nice he guesses, but everything else is just blah blah blah, he'd rather listen to music. Or maybe he does listen but it's more out of loneliness than to pay attention to what they're saying. So a whole bunch of people in weird costumes show up out of nowhere and Danny has not a single clue. No idea they can hurt him. No idea they want to.
