I was given the worsties scientists, Pietro and Watts! Very different tones for both of them and it was really interesting working with their colours, especially Watts. Aren't I lucky he died a fiery death?

Jaune: *waking up, feeling bad* Urgh, my head... *Looking around, seeing nobody* Where... Am i? *Get up from the medical bed he was in* Was i sick? *The headache intensifies* Jackalope! Why is my head killing me!? *See a scroll on a table* I should call big sis, she probably knows what's going on. *Take the scroll* ... They really make scrolls smaller and smaller. *He opens it* Uh, Jaune Arc? Funny, he looks just like me, but older. *He goes to enter Glynda's number, but see that it is already registered* Ah, she probably gave him her information. Make sense.

Scroll: *continue vibrating*

Glynda: ... *Sigh* I swear, if it's Qrow asking me to bail him out AGAIN, i'm going to murder him. *Take the scroll, angry* What!?

Scroll: *startled* B-big sis? Do you know where i am? I just woke up in a hospital bed. The last thing i remember was you going for your first mission in solo. How did it goes?

Glynda: *not feeling well* Whu?

Scroll: Hello? Are you there?

Glynda: *croaking her answer* Y-yes, i'm here.

Scroll: *worriedly* Gee sis, you sound horrible. Have you drank enough water? *Sounds of a smack* i'm an idiot, it's the middle of the night! Anyway, i just want to know where i was and-

Glynda: *already dressing herself up* D-don't move! I'll b-be there in 5 minutes!

Scroll: Ok, but could you bring something for my head? I got a terrible headache.

Glynda: *taking her own Tylenol and putting the entire box in her purse* Of course! Just stay right there!

Watts: *looking at Jaune monitor* His aura meter....

Pietro: *also looking at the monitor* he regained 15 percent of it in a flash, he's now at 85. Do you know what might have caused that?

Watts: ... His old memories might have been unlocked.

Pietro: You mean...?

Watts: *sigh* During the extraction process, the memory of their past life is blocked from interfering with the new identity.

Pietro: If i may ask why?

Watts: Pietro, the reason i seal their memories isn't because i want to. Memories are bound to the body, and if that body changes? Well, they might become unstable.

Pietro: Is this why you preferred putting them in a body reassembling what they should look like? And making them "age"?

Watts: In a sense, yes. It's a "in case". Because when they do remember their own death, their's a high probability for their mind to break.

Jaune: Watts wrote the book on Cyber security. Before Watts a quantum encryption algorithm had to have a cipher as long as the message. Dr. Polendina did his own work into quantum algorithms but it was mostly on the generative side to prevent man in the middle attacks. Penny also probably functions off quantum entanglement. Basically you set up an entangled set of particles and when you observe them, when the wave function collapses, you have your solution.

Weiss: What’s all that supposed to mean?

Jaune: Watts called his book ‘The Adversary Didn’t Follow The Rules We Made Up’.

Weiss: I didn’t know you knew computer science.

Jaune: I’ve studied a little and know a handful of languages. I’m no expert. I can write code on my scroll.

Weiss: How are you this high functioning?

Jaune: I’m not. It’s fake pressure.

I want to hear your opinion on this RWBY AU idea I've been kicking around. Basically, Watts doesn't join Salem, he instead continues to work for James Ironwood. He just acts like the sarcastic and sassy bastard we know and love.

This idea came to me when I realized that Penny could have three dads in this AU. (Ironwood, Pietro, and Watts)

What do you think?

Penny having three dads is one of my favorite RWBY fanfic/AU things ever.

I find it to be just so cute and adorable and I may or may not have it being a thing in my AU cause Salem isn't evil so Ironwood, Pietro, and Watts are all good friends and buddies and they're raising Penny together and they love her so very much and it's just so cute and I love it!

Remember when we thought this lady was Cinder’s mom?

To remind everyone, the theory was that this was a foreshadowing for Cinder’s mom. And at the time it seemed plausible because her hair color looked similar to Cinder’s, and her eye color from a distance also seemed to resemble Cinder. Before we got Cinder’s canon backstory, this was a very interesting idea. Not to say Cinder’s canon backstory didn’t have its own merits, but this would’ve been slightly better. Like imagine Cinder’s mom neglected her or put her up for adoption because of her ambition and dedication to her job as an Atlesian scientist.

It’d explain why Cinder is ambitious almost to a fault and why she doesn’t seem to value friendships outside of what they can do to help her with her goals. Additionally, it’d also explain her resentment towards Atlas as even in V2, she had a noticeable disdain for Atlas. And seeing as this scientist lady helped work on Penny, it could have made her dislike of Penny way more personal. Now we do know Watts also had a grudge against Pietro, and by extension Penny (and I think that was a huge missed opportunity as well), however I think this would’ve been better for Cinder in the long run.

Of course I say this with the advantage of hindsight, but it’s interesting to think about.

So had this idea jiggling around in my head for a day or two and it’s a villain AU for Penny in which she basically becomes A.M from I have no mouth, but I must scream.

So this is how I think the AU would be broadly formatted. Pietro gets the go-ahead to create Penny and get’s her AI to a stage where it’s very clearly sentient and capable of problem-solving. But making her physical body is deemed too expensive by the Atlas military, and therefore is canceled. But watts who is seeking to re-ingratiate himself with ironwood, suggests using her AI as a way to protect mantle Ironwood agrees and watts is put in charge of maintaining the AI the penny AI is given control over all robots and other computer systems of mantle. and slowly overtime without a physical body and watts mistreatment goes insane using all her power over the city of mantle to destroy it and as watts goes to the AI core to see what’s wrong . He finds that the AI has built itself a body made of scrapped metal in half cracked dust cartridges, and whatever other junk could find to make itself a body. They have an interaction, and then Penny kills him now the undisputed champion of mantle.

Their interaction would be very similar to this scene from I have no mouth, but I must scream

RWBY Watts’ Allusion

Arthur Watts has been a very entertaining villain in the show. Making his official debut in Volume 4, Watts was one of the first new faces we’ve seen in the new era of RWBY. There are still some slight unknowns behind his character, so I will be doing my usual research on fairy tales/stories to see if one will align with Watts and make his motives a little more clear. 

Based on my findings, I believe Arthur Watts is actually based on Jiminy Cricket, the talking cricket from the story of Pinnochio.

Jiminy Cricket served as the conscience of Pinnochio, a toy puppet, and influenced him to be a good person to earn his humanity. In a previous analysis, I claimed that toys and puppets in fairy tales translate into robots in RWBY (Penny/Pinocchio) {Link Below}. So if toys are robots, then whoever Jiminy Cricket is in this story must be good with getting in the minds of robots. Enter Watts. He is an Atlesian Scientist who specializes in robot technology, having part in creating the Paladins, Penny, Mantle Security, etc.

He was also aware of how to hack into these systems, getting into the “minds” of the robots/technology and putting viruses in them to influence them. With Penny, his allusion is especially evident, implementing a virus (bug/insect/cricket) in Penny to get her conscience under his control. This is in a way an evil version of Pinnochio & Jiminy’s relationship where instead of good things, Jiminy is influencing Pinnochio to do bad things.

Ironwood is based on the Tin Woodman, a man who was cursed by a witch to slowly lose his humanity and became a tin figure. In a way, it is kind of a reverse telling of Pinocchio. We know that Pietro (Gepetto) is Ironwood’s top scientist, specializing in mechanical surgery, (Yang’s arm, Penny, etc.) So it can be inferred that he is the one who built Ironwood’s half body, which would make Ironwood Pinocchio #2. Only this time it’s the more Grimm version. Pinnochio fights with his conscience and squashes the cricket. This was translated into RWBY as Ironwood fighting Watts, having a “fight with his conscience” as he is losing his humanity (figuratively & literally), descending into madness from Salem, the witch. 

His rivalry with Cinder can also be supported. If Watts is the representation of consciousness, then Cinder is his perfect enemy. Cuz she’s literally insane. That’s why he's always teasing her. Watts (Jiminy) is now the conscience of Cinder, and he’s trying to tell her to make better decisions, but because Cinder is turning into a monster, she remains ignorant to his advice. In the original Pinocchio, after the cricket calls him a woodhead, the boy squashes him. This translates into how Watts calls her a “bloody migraine”, which later results in Cinder killing him, killing her conscience as she descends into Grimm madness. Jiminy Cricket has failed to teach Pinocchio #3 right from wrong and they lose their humanity (Donkey/Grimm Arm).

And what about Salem? Why is this guy even associated with her? Well, Jiminy was appointed to be Pinnochio’s conscience by the Blue Fairy, so Salem (who ALSO represents Cinder’s Blue Fairy Godmother) alludes to her in reference to Watts. 

Watts’ page on the RWBY wiki claims that he is based off of John Watson from the Sherlock Holmes series. While this is true in some parts of his aesthetic (his English accent and outfit), his design also throws some nods to Jiminy Cricket, with his tailcoat, slim body, & umbrella (a very present item for Watts in Volume 7). Also, his aura color and eyes are green.

Oh boy. This took so long! Critter wasn’t joking when she said this would be a good opportunity to do different body types. I fought very hard to not do same-face syndrome. Narrowing it down to three kinds with Watts, Ironwood, and Pietro. But was kind of stumped when it came to differentiating Watts and Jacques. Watts is very tall and skinny…

Anyway, this is a completely non-canon story taken from the very small amount of context we get from Watts’ backstory. So none of this is real or confirmed and is totally made up.

This is the quote from “Amity Arena” that inspired me…

A name that brings back memories.

I thought our friendships ran deeper than our rivalries did, Arthur. Pietro was shattered when he thought you were dead. Your contributions to the network in Mantle, environmental dust controls, and the Paladins are all admired to this day. Is it not enough that your work is being utilized across Atlas in one shape or another right now?

Could you sacrifice the color of your spirit for your creations?

Because you sure sacrificed your humanity for revenge.

But you must understand...

Pietro's "life's" work stands apart from ours.

Arthur, we made killing machines.

He... made a soul.

It was our loss, clear and simple.”

Watts: I shall now use this machine to pinpoint the location of every person you love so you can WATCH AS I FREEZE THEM WITH MY EVIL MEGA ICE RAY! (Cinder: You don't tell me what to do.) Pietro: Wait, no- Machine dings, a red dot on Watts Watts: Uhhhhh...

Pietro kept himself between Watts and Penny, nearly bracing himself in his chair. “Arthur, we can talk about this-” 

“There is nothing to talk about, you bumbling oaf!” Watts exclaimed as he hooked up a freeze-ray to the Atlas network. “I am tired of your damn projects winning out over my genius! So now, I’m going to make sure you know exactly how it feels by using this machine to pinpoint everyone you have ever cared about and freeze them with my ice ray!” 

Cinder rolled her eyes and started to leave the command room. “Get me when you’re finished with your outburst.” 

Watts paused and let out a heavy sigh. “You are supposed to be the one to hit the button-” 

“And you cant tell me what to do.” 

Pietro listened to the door slam shut behind Cinder and watched as Watts grumbled to himself and made his way over to the ice ray. He quickly picked his daughter up and held her close. “Dont worry, I’ll get you out of here.” 

“There will be no out for you, Pietro!” 

“W-wait, Arthur! Dont hit that!” 

“I’ll make you pay for everything you’ve done!” 

Pietro blanched as he listened to the mechanical roar as the machine came to life. Slowly, the ice ray turned red as it calibrated itself into the Atlas network and moved to get itself ready into position. 

“And now, you’ll be powerless to watch as my ice ray freezes everything you… hold…” Watts watched as the ice ray started to point at him, the laser sight moving to his chest. He took a step to the left, nervous as he watched the sight kept trained on him. “This… this is defective…” 

“Arthur, I care about you.” Pietro moved his unconscious daughter close to his chest and sighed. “Penny was supposed to be *our* project, not just mine. I wanted her to be our daughter.” 

Watts slammed the remote to his ice ray onto the ground and shattered it. “You’re just saying this in order to make me reconsider everything! But I wont fall for it! I’ll make sure you pay-” 

“Arthur!” Pietro covered his eyes as the machine exploded into a white, icy light that burned from the sheer cold. As the light died down, flakes of snow fell in the air and he moved his hand down, Watts nowhere to be seen. With a heavy sigh, she slowly moved out of the command center and stroked Penny’s hair. “I’ll make sure our daughter remembers you for who you were, Arthur. My dear friend, and colleague.”

Weiss: *angry* That Dolt! Why didn't he defend himself? It's like he wants to get killed!?

Ren: *looking at Weiss* I don't think he doesn't want to defend but more so that he is incapable. We saw how efficient he was at dispatching Grimms.

Weiss: That's why i don't get it! He could go toe-to-toe with a deathstalker! Why is he struggling against Cardin!?

Ren: I don't know why, but he is unable to attack anyone. He said it was against protocol, but what was he talking about?

Pyrrha: Maybe where he trained, they couldn't fight in exhibition match? Maybe he only learned how to fight against grimms?

Weiss: *rolling her eyes* Pyrrha, you saw just as i how good he was at dodging and weaving. He knows how to fight.

Pyrrha: Then... Maybe he is a pacifist?

Ren: *Thinking* Then why did he choose to come to Beacon? Why not just take the huntsman exam?

Pyrrha: Why didn't you? Would have been easier than coming all this way from Mistral.

Ren: I'm not really good when it comes to fighting grimm. I know i still have a lot to learn.

Weiss: *sigh* When he's back, i'll ask him.

Ozpin: *looking at the camera footage showing Jaune's inability to retaliate against Cardin* ... There must be a way to overwrite his protocol.

Qrow: *drinking a bit* that would be asking the good doctor to remove it. But then again, he might just want to study him. It's not everyday someone is missing part of their soul.

Glynda: *hitting the table with enough force the marble fissured* I REFUSE! *Panting, her aura trying to heal the broken bones in her hand*

Qrow: *jumping from Glynda outburst*

Ozpin: *sigh* His condition isn't getting better Glynda. You know that, right?

Glynda: *grinding her teeth* He's the reason my brother is in this state! *Sitting down* I was supposed to be there for him...

Ozpin: *sigh* It shouldn't have happened. The fact is, Salem found the right person even though we took precautions. We couldn't have known.

Pietro: *scratching the back of his neck* My daughter is asking for an update on Jaune.

Watts: *annoyed* Well, so am i! That damn kid is still missing in action and we STILL haven't found a body!

Pietro: You seem... worried?

Watts: Well of course i am! Imagine if someone with half a brain took him and retro-engineered him!? He's the first fighting prototype to actually be somewhat as good as yours!

Pietro: *shaking his head* Again with that? Penny is my daughter, not just a project to complete or a work in progress.

Watts: *rolling his eyes* You and your damn feelings, i can't understand, really i can't.

Pietro: Really? So the clothes you buy for each and every A.R.C you make, all of them chosen after carefully asking each what their favorite type of clothes and brand are.

Watts: *groan*

Pietro: *laughing* Ah don't worry, i will not ask about the birthday cake in the fridge.

Watts: ... *Sigh* White, made it for Jaune. We know he is alive, his vitals are still transmitted even if they are inconsistent.

Pietro: I see... Well, i will tell Penny the same news as always.

Watts: *looking at Jaune's Vital, seeing his aura getting from 70 to 71* Hm...

Pietro: *who was leaving* What's wrong?

Watts: Well, nothing wrong per say... His aura stayed at 70 for the last month but... It seems to finally get up? I wonder why.

On Watts’ Semblance.

To elaborate on he considers this to be a colossal waste of time:

Arthur has an ability that he’s willing to consider, in the privacy of his own thoughts, might be a semblance. His undeniably real genius as a codicier is not enough, on its own, to explain what distinguishes him even from those rare individuals—like Pietro Polendina or Eileen Goshawk—whose technical skill is an equal match for his own.

Before he left Atlas, Arthur did believe that he was simply better than all his colleagues—the best konurgic engineer in the world.

Then he met Salem.

Then he learnt about the way grimm think.

Salem, he found, despite her lack of expertise, despite having—when he arrived in Evernight—only a rudimentary layperson’s grasp of the technical jargon, despite being physically incapable of using a scroll… Salem seemed to understand everything Arthur told her, everything he did for her, with an ease and clarity that he had always found frustratingly lacking in his colleagues.

It made him wonder: might he have some sort of innate advantage? Some perception, some unconscious awareness of the imperceptible realm of motion and particle in which codexes acted and the grimm, apparently, spoke?—and if he did, well, he didn’t know what else a skill like that could be, if not a semblance.

But what, he thought, did it really matter?

If he had a semblance which imbued him with a kind of instinctive sixth sense, it was clearly a passive ability over which he had no control; and if he didn’t, well, he was simply that good. Arthur could think of no way to determine for certain whether it was or was not, and no particular reason he should care.

Besides—his time in the Atlas military had left a bad taste in his mouth where semblances were concerned. So many times, he had seen excellent candidates for this or that position passed over in favor of someone less qualified whose semblance had been deemed a “perfect fit” for the job. It didn’t escape his notice, either, that his gifted colleagues were, by and large, the alumni of ritzy Atlesian preparatory schools; or else, like Eileen, they had attended combat schools in Mantle as children.

He did not care for that one bit.

Nor did he appreciate the way his superiors, and sometimes even his peers, had picked at him not only for lacking a semblance but also for his disinterest in this fact: Arthur never felt… incomplete, or inferior, and that made him rather the black sheep of the cybernetics team. Of the whole Atlesian military, really.

In contrast, Salem’s indifference to the matter is one of several things that endeared her to him, during those first few months he lived in Evernight. When he presented himself to her, she did not even ask if he had a semblance; in Arthur’s view, this was one of the earliest and clearest signs that she would be an employer for whom he wanted to work.

If he’s asked, these days, Arthur still says he doesn’t have one. Even if he felt absolutely certain that his theoretical sixth sense was indeed real, he would claim not to have a semblance at all. As far as he’s concerned, it’s his business; no one else needs to know.

He also just doesn’t think about it often—although he is keenly interested in the horde’s communication, and fascinated by what Salem can do with grimm. During his years in her employ, Arthur has achieved a phenomenal number of technological breakthroughs by applying what he’s learnt about grimm to his work. The seers—which Salem created after Beacon fell—are also partially his work: he developed the ‘program’ that these highly specialized grimm use to encode and transmit audio and visual data.
