Pro Piracy Pride Flags!!
So I ended up making a bunch of piracy pride flags for fun, but I obviously didn't do all of them so if anyone wants to request a specific one they can! I hope you enjoy, and remember: Fuck streaming services, fuck megacorperations. Artists have already been paid for their work, the only people you are scamming are the already rich higher ups.

Okay but guys, why do I see no one talking about their new flag from the S2E4 preview??? It’s a golden cat.
A golden.
Cat.
This makes me so optimistic that they are all indeed starting to heal as a group, even if slowly.
I mean… look at them. They are a family 😭
They embrace that they are soft. They aren’t the pirates with the cruel flag of the devil, the blood and the spear anymore, they are what they have always been: a lovely, queer group of people who really care about each other.
It’s not about the piracy. It’s never been about the piracy.
And the fact that even Izzy stands there waiting for the flag to get raised without trying to stop anyone is just beautiful.
He’s a dick, but he’s their dick.
I hope you all know that I am fully expecting to see some golden cat flags at pride next year because this is their pride flag! How much gayer can you get than having a golden cat sorrounded by golden light beams on a flag?!

For Matthew
One of our dear crewmates, Stephanie, lost her son back in 2022. They both watched S1 together, and tragically he passed away not long after. Stephanie has been an active member of our crew for years now, and she reached out to Rhys and he made a lovely Cameo for her.
Some of you may have already seen it as she's been kind enough to share it with us previously, but after talking with Stephanie and hearing about who Matthew was, I wanted to put together a small dedication to him, and share Stephanie's words with you with her permission.
-- Dedication --
Matthew was 39 years old when he passed away, one of the original OFMD crewmates. He was a quirky, deaf, funny, and talented man who gave the world kindness despite the struggles he went through. He loved theatre, movies, video games, local art, and independent restaurants, and made a positive impact on everyone he met.
Matthew made his debut as a professional backyard wrestler in 2002 in the Phoenix New Times, and he worked on many well known video games in the industry doing development and quality assurance. He was truly a child a learning, and a true pilar of support in the community, and spent a great deal of time laughing and bringing light and joy to the world.
With his last wish, he donated his body to science, continuing on his loving and supportive legacy. Matthew was a wonderful man that was lost far too soon and his mother Stephanie, as well as anyone who knew him miss him so very much. Below is his obituary if you'd like to learn more about this wonderful crewmate of ours.
We salute you Matthew. You are the embodiment of all the kindness, acceptance, support, and loving things that embody Our Flag Means Death as well, and we're honored to have you amongst us in spirit. You are greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Tumblr media
--- Stephanie ---
"...I wanted to share something with the fandom about my journey with OFMD and wondered if any of you have experienced some personal growth right along with Ed and Stede (and of course many others in the crew).
My 39-year old son told me there was a show we had to watch that just dropped. He says "you'll love it because Taika's in it and we love pirates.” I laughed and said, “I’m in.”
I had no idea what it was about, but he and I had watched Black Sails together and he’s right—we love pirates. Within minutes of the pilot, I was completely won over and enjoying every moment of piracy on the Revenge. “What we’re about to do will be perilous . . . . “. From that moment on, I was in deep. We binged the first 3 episodes, rewinding to replay scenes and went mental when we realized that we had to wait a full week for 2 more episodes. My son and I would text about it non-stop and we both started quoting lines and getting even more invested. He was sending me meme's and screenshots and we started living our best pirate life.
By the end of the season, we had laughed, cried, and thoroughly discussed every aspect of Ed and Stede's growing relationship. We felt the pain of the cliffhanger and became “mentally devastated by what [we’ve] witnessed” and we certainly didn’t bottle it up.
We talked non-stop about the show. It became a daily thing. Articles, interviews, pictures and joining in the quest for renewal. Once it got renewed (PRIDE month), we were on the lookout for any posts or information about signs of filming, etc. We couldn't wait for the second season and were counting down the months after we knew filming wrapped.
Then the unthinkable happened. My son went into the hospital after having a slow recovery to multiple surgeries. Cliff Notes version: He was admitted and within 24 hours, he was in ICU on life support. My son had an extensive medical history beginning when he was an infant. 42+ surgeries and many air-evacs to Children’s Hospital so it was kind of the norm to go in and be out within a few days or week and be on the road to recovery again.
If you met him, you wouldn’t even know he had all the medical issues he had because he worked full time and carried himself like a stand-up comedian--always laughing and telling stories. He was a video gamer who had worked in the industry for 7 years until he had to take a leave to handle his medical issues and have a job that didn’t exceed 40 hours.. He was really a character and had a lot of funny mannerisms.
This time was different. He didn’t rally and 10 days later he tragically died from a fungal infection that they couldn’t identify until it was too late to treat.
He died in June, 2022, and the grief has been unrelenting and unbearable. I have literally shut down and spent the months grieving and in so much pain that I can barely leave the house and see anyone. It has broken me. When I saw the actual date that S2 would drop, my emotions were so intense because I didn't know how I could possibly watch it without him. I finally went on and rewatched Season 1 to prepare for Season 2 and found myself crying through the entire 10 episodes every time I thought of his witty banter during the season.
I wasn’t sure I could handle Season 2 without him. I talked about it a lot in Grief therapy and decided I would watch it with him and for him. I would try the first episode and see if I could do it. I would imagine all the conversations we would have had.
Matthew understood being different. He was Deaf and spent so much time in and out of hospitals and was bullied and teased his whole childhood. Even with all of that, he grew up to be loving, kind, accepting of all, and a VERY FUNNY guy.
On the day I started S2, I remembered that Matthew enjoyed being on the groups on Reddit for OFMD. Having never done Reddit, I was nervous, but decided I would see if the online community would be something that would give me the thing I missed so much . . . his commentary.
I couldn't believe how it opened my world up. Everyone was so nice and open to discussion about OFMD. The banter, information and excitement has been so restorative for me. It has given me a lot of healing to say the least.
I binged the first 3 episodes for S2 and went through it with all of you watching Blackbeard fall into the worst version of the Kraken that he had been and felt every emotion during the s2e3 Merman scene. Laughing and crying, laughing and crying, I waited for each week craving their reunion would finally happen and celebrated on-line with the entire fandom as we shared our analysis and thoughts.
Having a show that means so much to me has truly made me so happy. I loved that Ed and Stede are a middle aged couple and that they both had to grow so much to get to the point where they could be together in life as a beautiful and loving couple. I appreciated the writing so much because DJ and crew did really give us what he said he would, but in a far better way than I could have ever imagined.
I still need a s3 because I want to see Ed and Stede mature even more as a couple--no more leaving each other! I also want to see them meet up with their found family.
I want to see the new Revenge adventures, Spanish Jackie and Swede, Izzy legacy moments, Zheng, Oluwande, Wee John, Jim, Archie, Fang, Frenchie, Black Pete, Lucius, Buttons the sea gull, the perfect music and emotional parallels to past episodes and, of course, revenge for Minor Prince Ricky, Is that asking too much? I'm sure I left out so much else I want to see, but you all get it because you are stuck in this vortex right along side of me.
I dream of HBO/Max renewing this sooner rather than later so I can start thinking of when they will be filming and following all the hints that unfold. This show means so much to me and I am grateful that it exists.
I feel like I can be a better version of an ally to the community I love so much by immersing myself within all the representation in this treasure trove of storytelling. I learn so much by seeing these relationships develop into deep and committed love and have such respect for all of us who just want to see these relationships normalized everywhere in society. We all benefit from inclusion and I am very very grateful for this show. It means more to me than I could ever explain.
I'm sorry I rambled, but I am just so appreciative of all the people in this group who just share and talk and roll around in all our in-depth chatter.
I celebrate this series and everyone that worked so hard to provide this beautiful story. I feel my son's presence every moment I watch it (on repeat) and discuss it every single day.
Izzy's (Con's) death scene touched me deeply . . . thinking about losing my son and how that felt and how I held onto him for as long as I could so I wouldn’t forget how it felt to hold him. Taika's commitment to the pain of losing Izzy felt like it paralleled all my feelings since the loss. Izzy's deathbed voice and words have lived in my heart ever since.
Con and Taika were top tier and seeing all the crew's emotions as they watched what was happening felt so raw and touching. I also felt so much from s2e3 when Ed is dead and Stede is begging him to live . . . I lived that as well, convinced that my son would somehow prove them all wrong and open his eyes. I said it over and over and when Ed opened his eyes, I just felt every single emotional hurdle.
Yes, I was a bucket of tears through it all, but I also felt a lot of healing. I’d love to hear from any of you who have had some kind of evolution or growth from this gift of a show."

Pirate Media Recommendations
Along with Ryann Fletcher, Kate Heartfield, Juliet Kemp, and F.D. Lee, I'm going to be on the Queer Pirates panel at 3pm this Friday at EasterCon 2023!
Our Flag Means Death and other pirates: a panel discussion including fandom and canon of Our Flag Means Death and other series such as Black Sails. This item will start around 15 minutes after advertised start time to minimise clash with the Opening Ceremony.
You can still sign up for virtual membership of EasterCon here if you'd like to attend online, as there are going to be a great many panels and discussions throughout the con, which are gonna be great.
Coming up to the panel, I thought I'd make a list of some of my favourite pirate and nautical media to point people to, as I'm probably going to mention a bunch of it on the panel and this is a particularly fierce interest of mine!
So for Our Flag Means Death, we know that it's an interpretation of the historical relationship between Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet as a romance - two other famously queer pirates were of course Anne Bonny and Mary/Mark Read. I'm personally super excited to see if these figures will feature in Our Flag Means Death S2.
Podcast Episodes & Videos:
Ching Shih: The Pirate Queen, from Puppet History
The True Story of a Pirate Queen, from Ruining History
A History of Gay Pirates with Rebecca Simon, on the PRIDE Podcast -
Sailing Through Queer Pirate History with Rebecca Simon, on the PRIDE Podcast

Queerness in the Golden Age of Piracy, from Queer as Fact
Books & Essays:
FICTION: The Aubrey-Maturin Series, by Patrick O'Brian - The Aubreyad is not about pirates, but is a nautical-historical series of 20 books set in the 1800s. I love these books a lot, they're ridiculous and very homoerotic with a lot of background gay dynamics - you can absolutely infer a romance between Captain Jack Aubrey, a hot slab of beef, and his doctor, Stephen Maturin. They're funny and they're rich with nautical descriptions, really immersing you into the language and feel of the period and the sensation of being on these vessels. While I'm not holding these books up as a bastion of queerness compared to other texts, Maturin is a fervent abolitionist and despite being a member of Aubrey's crew is actually vehemently anti-colonialist in his views, and those discussions do play out on paper again and again. Because of their realism these books do kind of poke a hole in the naval officers being held up as inherently noble or honourable, and particularly regularly criticises the actions and ideas of the state.
FICTION: J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan - I love Peter Pan, and obviously I talk and blog about it a lot. What's particularly dear to my heart is the relationship between Hook and Smee, which is such an intimate marriage even though it's not explicitly described as such, and it makes me very emotional. This book was written at the beginning of the 20th century, and I do want to warn anyone before going in about the racism inherent - the text treats the existence of the Natives to Neverland as part of an "adventure", and there's also anti-Black racism toward many of Hook's crew, as well as the description of Hook himself as "swarthy" despite being a white Etonian. Peter Pan is a story about working class white children in London whose parents has dreams of them ascending to middle class, and the children's fears of growing up are heavily influenced by economic anxiety, but also they desire a return to a time when as young white kids "adventure" would have been more accessible to them, as is typical in the classic adventure novel.
FICTION: Peter Darling, by Austin Chant - The Lost Boys say that Peter Pan went back to England because of Wendy Darling, but Wendy is just an old life he left behind. Neverland is his real home. So when Peter returns to it after ten years in the real world, he’s surprised to find a Neverland that no longer seems to need him. The only person who truly missed Peter is Captain James Hook, who is delighted to have his old rival back. The oft-recommended trans man!Peter Pan/Hook romance novel. Please don't talk to me about this one as I haven't and can't read it for some personal trigger readings, but it's recommended all over and is well-loved for a reason!
FICTION: Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - Treasure Island is of course, one of the archetypal adventure novels. What a lot of people might not know is that the TV series Black Sails is a prequel to Treasure Island! If you enjoyed Our Flag Means Death, you might be delighted to realise that the real life pirate Israel Hands features in Treasure Island, and fights with Jim Hawkins, the protagonist.
NON-FICTION: Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean, by B.R. Burg - In Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition, historian B. R. Burg investigates the social and sexual world of these sea rovers, a tightly bound brotherhood of men engaged in almost constant warfare. What, he asks, did these men, often on the high seas for years at a time, do for sexual fulfillment? Buccaneer sexuality differed widely from that of other all- male institutions such as prisons, for it existed not within a regimented structure of rule, regulations, and oppressive supervision, but instead operated in a society in which widespread toleration of homosexuality was the norm and conditions encouraged its practice.
ESSAY: Our Flag Means Death and Queer Utopias at Sea, an essay by Seth LeJacq
TV Series:
Our Flag Means Death - Of course, duh! Our Flag Means Death, a queer romcom interpreting the historical relationship between Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, and Edward Teach, Blackbeard, as a romance.
Black Sails - A "gritty" and brutal prequel to RL Stevenson's Treasure Island, exploring the tales of Long John Silver and how he came to be what he ultimately is in Treasure Island. There is a lot of gay shit in this and it's extremely anti-imperial in its outlook - with that said, I'm personally not a great fan of Black Sails to watch, for me personally it's either too upsetting or too dull to stick with, oscillating between the two extremes. If you haven't tried it and do want to, I do recommend sticking through at least the first season and seeing if you get into it! With that said, it's got particularly brutal onscreen treatment of its WOC, especially Max, a Black woman who is violently raped onscreen (as well as onscreen abuses of other women), and I would recommend treading with caution if this is something that will be difficult to watch.
Neverland - This miniseries is near and dear to my heart - it's not huge on the pirates, but it actually has Bob Hoskins reprising his 1991 role as Smee, and I find it to be an interesting and quite different exploration of the Peter Pan prequel that really explores class some. More importantly, it actually has Natives playing Natives, and features Q'orianka Kilcher as Aaya!
Movies:
Love, Death, & Robots: Bad Travelling (2022) - This is a short film that's part of the LD&R series, and it's really good nautical horror. That's all there is to it.
Master and Commander (2003) - Taika Waititi said this movie is his favourite romance movie, and he's so fucking right. Anyway, this movie is based off the first five of Patrick O'Brian's Aubreyad, and it's so loving and so gay.
Treasure Planet (2002) - There are so many adaptations of Treasure Island, but this is my favourite every single time, it's just so well-done, it's so full of care, it really captures the wonder and excitement of sailing and the sense of freedom, and honestly? Jim Hawkins is sooooo transmasculine, he even has an ugly shitty mullet haircut and a little gold earring, he is the blueprint, he is perfect. If piracy in space tickles your fancy, I also might recommend Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013).
Pirates of the Carribean: The Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man's Chest (2006), and At World's End (2007) - Listen. Are there technically other POTC movies? Yes. Should you watch them? Oh, fuck no. I have seen On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge and let me tell you: you do not have to, you do not need to, and you do not want to. On Stranger Tides tried to tell me that Hector Barbossa fell in love with a woman. My man. Hector Barbossa. A woman!? Please! Anyway, I grew up on these movies and unfortunately they are overwhelmingly and unrealistically white - there are some really cool characters of colour and I especially love Tia Dalma. Remember not to watch these movies legally, by the way - watch them on an old cheap DVD or do some piracy yourself. Fuck Johnny Depp.
The Pirates of Penzance (1983) - This is an adaptation of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and it is so over the top, so ridiculous, so much fucking fun. Kevin Kline has some of the sexiest fits in this movie and so much thick, thatched chest hair, and the music is good, many of the jokes still land, and it's just fun.
Peter Pan (2003) - Don't watch the Disney Peter Pan. Never watch it, it's garbage, it's ugly, it invented a bunch of anti-Native racism that isn't in the already racist original text, and you know, fuck Disney. Is the 2003 Peter Pan perfect? No. But is it better? Yes. Jason Isaacs is so hot as Hook, and while I am not the biggest fan of PJ Hogan's take on the book that's all about Wendy wanting to fuck her own dad on top of cutting the Hook/Smee dynamic back significantly, the Neverland aesthetics and the silly piratical ones are a lot of fun.
Hook (1991) - Spielberg's sequel to Peter Pan is glorious for one reason and one reason only: Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins were like, "hey, these two dudes are married. They're old queens in love!" and they played it like that, and they were so fucking right. Hoffman's Hook is so queer and so effete and so incredibly mentally ill and he is the biggest mood throughout, as is Smee trying to keep them both alive. I adore this movie to death, I really do.
Down Periscope (1996) - Okay. So. This movie is a little bit different. It's not set in the Golden Age of Piracy or even just after it - it's set in the 1990s, and is about a Yank Naval Captain doing wargames with other members of the navy. With that said, it's got a lot of pirate hijinks and a lot of found family dynamics with a lot of freaks and neurodivergents packing the crew - note that there's some misogynistic harassment in this for the only female crew member, but she's one of my favourite characters and she's so much fun, much like the rest of the crew. Listen. The captain has a tattoo on his dick. They all dress up as pirates while making one of their crew members walk the plank. Their ending credits feature the cast dancing and singing along with the Village People, to the iconic gay anthem, In The Navy. It's good, I swear.
And I've tried a bunch of pirate videogames, but none of them has measured up to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Unfortunately, this game is an Assassin's Creed game and all the AC plot stuff sucks, because that's what AC games are for.
When it's not doing their terrible meta plot in the "real world", though, this game has such excellent gameplay, it's great fun, and the soundtrack is tremendous. Even if you don't play the game, absolutely consider giving the sound track a listen, because it's just great!
An old album I would recommend is also the Robert Shaw Chorale Sea Shanties one! It's from 1960, and they do some really fun arrangements of different sea shanties - their Drunken Sailor is one of my absolute favourites!
If you'd like to see a different take on the sea shanties and would still love some more space piracy, I would also recommend Once Upon A Time (in Space), by the Mechanisms!
My Stuff
And separate to the general rec list above, here's some of my work that's relevant to my takes on queer pirates, and why I'm on the panel:
Communicating Want, by me, DictionaryWrites - 75k, rated E, Frenchie/Izzy. Izzy's just so buttoned-up, how is Lucius supposed to resist the urge to seduce him? It doesn't go well. Just a silly thing exploring sexual trauma and stuff with Izzy Hands! Love that bitch.

Ideas from the Fanfiction Nursery
The Domestic Battles of Juri Han
Juri dealing with domestic bullshit in the most chaotic way possible.
Set in the same continuity of The Spider and the Bee, but during her relationship with Crimson Viper.
Juri Fights the HOA - Crimson's neighborhood has a really shitty HOA and Juri decides to fight the power by throwing a massive party where she and the other fed up neighbors rev their engines, play loud music, and paint their fences garish colors. She also vandalizes the HOA leader's fence and car, giving them pink and blue cheetah print. This all started because they started giving them fines over the pride flag on the porch, then Juri's bike, then the trash, then the length of the grass, and Juri isn't patient enough for malicious compliance.
Juri Fights the School Board - Juri doesn't approve of the School Board's ruling on local book bans and decides to be a menace about it.
Juri Fights River Creek Methodist Church- Crimson is trying to kiss up to her boss by going to the same church as him, and it would really help if Lauren would get baptized for her, but Lauren gets cold feet so Juri decides to step in and pretend to have a religious epiphany for the sake of her girlfriend's promotion. The baptism is held in the pool of a neighborhood full of mansions and is decorated with fancy statues and waterfalls. The line "Lauren, Mommy needs you to suck it up, talk about Jesus, and go get dunked in that bougie pool by the preacher" gets said.
Juri Fights the County
Juri Fights the Manager of a Local Hardware Store
Working Title - Why you shouldn't kidnap Cammy's family members
Set before SF2 when Cammy's 18. She's living with her new, adoptive family, got literally no idea where she spawned from other than vaguely in Eastern Europe, and she's just kinda training for her career working for her adoptive father.
She and George are stuck slumming it at the house while everyone else is on a mission they ain't qualified for.
Cammy's bummed her family is away during the anniversary of her adoption, with the exception of George Ginzu, who's like "we should go do something fun in town"
Famous last words, he gets abducted by Shadaloo. Cammy's fucking pissed.
She's playing Rambo now. She tracks their asses down to break out her little brother and give everyone hell.
The Dolls recognize her and become horrified that she's alive, but not responding to her own name or recognizing them. It's like she's been brainwashed or something!
Juri is mad Akuma gets to Bison before she does, proceeds to sulk all the way to SF4.
Rather depressing oneshot about Decapre mourning Cammy after her "death" between Alpha 3 and SF2.
I kinda just want an excuse to write backstories I came up with for minor characters like the Dolls, Lauren, and Delta Red.
Why Marz was so willing to yeet herself to death
She fell in love with Rashid's friend, friend got the ax, now she's decided to be a Sister Repentia and just fucking die.
Rashid's friend is rewritten to be his sister
She and Marz were both massive Warhammer nerds and decide they'll meet again in space.
Marz imagines herself and all her loved ones as Sisters of Battle and Space Marines watching the Imperium crumble before she flatlines and she smiles.
Fuck yeah, she gonna play Orks in the next life.
Lauren and Li-Fen Try Wrestling
These two rascals hunt down Poison and try to pitch themselves as wrestlers
It's a weirdly dramatic plotline
Li-Fen's character is a pirate who's parents were brutally slaughtered by Lauren's character so she turned to piracy and stock market fraud to fill the void. She's hellbent on revenge until she realizes Lauren's character is kinda hot.
Lauren's character is a super soldier with cat ears that is totally not her GI Joe oc. She works for totally not Cobra but secretly thinks clubbing baby seals kinda sucks, but they match five percent to her 401k so she's stuck morality be damned.
Their characters are in a situationship and most of their wrestling is the girls waxing poetically on the meaning of life and love while body slamming each other.
They're just larping at poor Poison who can't find a way to leave discreetly, she's just trapped with these hyper teenagers who really want to tell her all about their OCS.

Inspired by this excellent post, here’s a few places I’ve made for the lads
The Pride and Sorrow
Located in Spite, this tea room is supposedly a haunt of spies and criminals seeking a more refined/quiet place to relax and chat about their days. With the counter manned by a Stoic Former Urchin, talk flows free with the leaves. Rumors persist, however, of backroom dealings involving a former funeral director. Whether these are true or not, few have seen the Last Mortician in the front of the store. Even fewer have played chess with her. (And even fewer than that have beaten her). Supposedly a favorite of the Koloman Republic, during the Coilheart Games.
Factions: Criminals, the Great Game
Notable Persons: The Last Mortician, the Stoic Former Urchin, the Ragged Academic
The Extracurriculars Department at Benthic
A underfunded and underappreciated experiment by the Dean of Extracurriculars to ‘expand the students’ knowledge’, it has scrabbled out a living amongst the resurgent Correspondence Department and bitter academic rivalry.
It’s various courses include:
Department of Photography, headed by a Polite Daguerreotypist
Department of Surface Studies, headed by the Ragged Academic
Applied Zeefaring Ztudies, headed by a Grousing Zailor
Contemporary Literature (Not Romance!), headed by an Ailing Typist
And many others. A small (friendly) rivalry has brewed between the Academic and the Daguerreotypist. Despite this, the departments generally get along, sharing students and resources where possible.
Factions: The University: Benthic
Notable Persons: Ambrose Ashcroft, Dean of Extracurriculars, the Polite Daguerreotypist, the Ragged Academic, the Ailing Typist, the Grousing Zailor, a Motley and Loyal Cadre of Students
Paulson’s Provisions
A small pub situated just near enough to Prickfinger Wastes to be dangerous, and just close enough to the Department of Menace Eradication to be a favored spot of monster hunters on a seriously tight budget. Owned and operated by Kip Paulson, this pub has stood solid for a decade, despite London’s general bad time with summer festivities- Kip and his rowdy crowd have survived the Starved War, the Great Sink, and the Coilheart Games more or less unscathed (though with more patrons from the Tomb-Colonies). Revolutionaries and Constables tip back pints with Monster-Hunters and Tomb-Colonists, and with a strict ‘No Weapons’ policy, the peace is shakily kept.
Factions: Revolutionaries, Tomb-Colonists, Constables
Notable Persons: Kip Paulson, the Prussian Swashbuckler, the Retired Constable, the Forthright Demolitionist
Her Majesty’s Locomotive, Freefall
A Parsival-class locomotive, this is less a location and more a mobile base for a peculiar Germanic mercenary. Fitted with guns that let her punch far above her weight, she’s the pride of her Captain and crew. She’s stated that she’ll work for any price as long as it puts fuel in her firebox, and she always follows through on a contract. Some have sighted it engaging in piracy, flying a Prussian flag brought from Old London, and a few vintage bottles of wine, for celebrations and sharing amongst rescued skyfarers.
Notable Persons: The Prussian Sky-Captain, the Forthright Demolitionist

In The Lonely Hour (1/10)
Tumblr media
A03 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10
Summary: A collection of canon-compliant(ish) one-shots that provide glimpses of Killian's life based on the album "In the Lonely Hour" by Sam Smith.
Mind on My Money After turning his back on a corrupt king, Killian finds purpose in piracy.
“We'll sail under the crimson flag and give our enemies no quarter.”
Cheers rose from the men - there was far more money to be had in piracy and, apparently, more honour. Killian marched toward the helm, exuding confidence and daring any man to entertain a moment’s fantasy of mutinying against his command. It seemed the cheers were earnest in their support of his command and his newest career path for the former soldiers.
He expected some of the men to hesitate when he proclaimed that they fly the crimson flag rather than a black flag. But, it seemed the senseless loss of their beloved former captain had hardened their hearts as effectively as it had his. He felt the heavy, lifeless body of his brother in his arms, still warm even as his eyes dimmed without the presence of Liam behind them any longer. Anger filled him as he pushed away the intrusive memory, that had stolen his breath and made his hands sweat so that he had to tighten his hold on the ship’s wheel. He welcomed the anger, it made him feel stronger than the desolate despair that had previously encompassed him.
For months, the anger gave him purpose. It fuelled him, empowered him, and drove him in his tireless campaign against the King's navy. His reckless actions and calm leadership in battles painted a brutal reputation that his men boasted about at every port after they had a few too many, but well-earned, pints.
As he watched a heavily-burdened frigate on the horizon try to change course at the sight of his ship, Captain Jones smiled in anticipation of the chase and battle to come. Killian felt a glimmer of warmth - was that pride? - in his chest that his deeds had the best captains of the King’s armada fleeing whenever they caught a flicker of a crimson red flag or navy hull in their spy glasses.
“Raise the crimson, boys!” Killian’s smile was near feral, adrenaline blazing through his body as he steered the Jolly Roger to intercept the naval ship. The sharp clip of orders, the rumble of cannons being rolled into position, and the excited shouts of his crew as they caught up with the Anthem of the Realm rose from the deck and fed the fire in his veins. He never felt more alive than he did in these quiet moments right before…
BOOM!
The crack of wood splintering was met with cheers as the Jolly’s cannon hit her mark. Water splashed onto the deck as the Anthem’s answering cannon fire fell short. Killian gave the wheel to Mr Starkey and jumped down to join his men on the deck. As the sea began beating at the hull, the waters angry by the disturbance caused by the battling ships, he took his place to lead the boarding party as his first mate brought them closer to the pride of the royal navy.
The steady thud of heavy grappling hooks hitting and scraping along the deck made Killian smile. The navy was coming to them. It would be an easier fight if they didn’t have to traverse to the other ship. The Jolly groaned in protest as the boarding lines pulled her toward the larger ship, but her crew held off the sailors as they attempted to cross by cutlass and arrow.
The waters were as crimson as the flag he flew by the time he stood on the deck of the Anthem, her captain trembling at the end of his blade. The captain had been found locked in his quarters, tucked safely away, while his men died around him. His words were desperate words that Killian had heard countless times, “There are chests of gold below deck. I can lead you to them. Please, will you spare me?”
“We’ve relieved the ship of her burdens before finding you cowering beneath your bed, Captain.”
He returned to the Jolly Roger, her hull lower in the water with the pilfered jewels, gold, food, and barrels of fine rum. He cut the lines holding her to the Anthem. Starkey was already pulling the Jolly away from her latest victim. He watched with a satisfied smile as the finest ship in the King’s navy and the last stronghold the king held over these seas sank to the seafloor, taking her craven captain down with her.
The sunset filled the sky with brilliant oranges and reds, and the seas calmed once they claimed the Anthem. His crew celebrated their new fortunes and the lives they fought to keep that day. As they toasted their captain for claiming ownership and power of the seas of the realm, for bringing them wealth, for leading them to victories, for fighting the Kraken, for charming mermaids, and for even more ridiculous myths as the night grew older, he watched the stars.
The anger that had kept him such constant company had started to fade. As a star darted across the night sky, Killian found himself hoping that he could find something, anything to fill the void it was leaving in its stead.

Wiztober 2022 Day Three: Exalted
Content warning for violence, piracy, torture, murder, eye trauma, child homelessness, child soldier (kinda?), implied (unhealthy) sex/using sex as self harm, implied slut shaming, swearing, and basically everything else for my boy alexander.
(Prompt List)
Darling Alexander Dove was a man who could easily be described as many things. ‘Easy’ would be one of those adjectives, actually. Other words described him better.
Flamboyant, ruthless, cruel, unhinged, monstrous. Prideful.
Alexander took pride in his appearance, the finest silks dyed in eye-searing pinks and shadowy black, jewelry of pure gold and gemstones that sparkled. He took pride in his skills in battle, slicing through enemies from the darkness, vaulting and rolling through the battlefield as if it were his personal playground. He took pride in his ship, a relic his parents had used in their voyages, restored to its former glory and now flaunting his own flag, a dove with its deceitful olive branch plastered on a field of pink and black.
He even took pride in his crew, the few loyal members he had. His steadfast sister-in-arms Bonnie Anne, the reliable Jack Russel, Subodai who never faltered, Ratbeard who was predictable and dedicated, and even a few more. Others had tried to join his crew and failed, too weak willed or weak stomached to withstand his rule. Others joined and got in the way, and became nothing more than corpses to toss overboard, falling into the void of the skyways.
Alexander rarely took pride in the rank of Captain, especially granted the inevitable ‘pirate’ that preceded it to give context. He had not earned this role, not with bribery or hard work as one would in a military. He had taken it, snatched it from thin air and hid behind it as he once did with his mother’s skirts.
He demanded the title be used out of respect more than anything, to remind his crew that no matter what he owned and ran this ship with a gilded fist.
Even Bonnie Anne who knew him ever since he was just some street rat abandoned and alone in the Skull Island sewers would use his title. She would knock sense to him from time to time, as big sisters tend to do, and only then would she call him Alexander or Dove.
Every skyway in the Spiral knows his name. Captain Darling Alexander Dove, scourge of the skies, that marauding carrion bird of a man who will rip you to shreds while you scream your last breath. A reputation many would spend a lifetime to achieve, and he got it in just five or so years. Now when they dock in a new world the whispers are already there, his reputation precedes him, and merchant ships flee, militaries launch their fleets against his flag, and no one ever underestimates him again.
He is not just a vicious child or a pretty face or an easy fuck.
Captain Darling Alexander Dove is all he wanted to be when he was that scared child. He never has to fear anyone ever again. He can never be forced into anything he does not wish to. Any blood he spills is on his hands alone, of his own volition. He is no one’s chained mutt, a feral guard dog let loose on an enemy.
Even if others look at him as if he still is. Even if Bonnie Anne sometimes looks at him like that, and he has to pretend he doesn’t see it lest he snap and give her something to truly fear. Bonnie Anne is one of the few Alexander refuses to hurt. She would never be scared of him. All it would do is make her pity Alexander, and that would ruin him.
Some of the others do fear him- Ratbeard and Sarah Steele and Jack Russel and Fan Flanders. They are simply in this far too deep, and could not leave the crew alive after years of being complicit in his crimes.
Subodai, for some reason, does not fear him. Alexander cannot understand why he doesn’t, why even at his most deranged, Subodai will stand beside him as stalwart as always and unflinching of his cruelty.
Alexander will use his reputation as another weapon in his arsenal, right next to seduction and daggers.
He never makes empty threats, often following through despite it being disadvantageous merely because it would be funny or prove a point. The easiest way to make Alexander do something unexpected is to say he wouldn’t do it. He lives to defy expectation, refusing to conform to anything, let alone the image one has of him in their head. He is violent and cruel and teasing and gorgeous and monstrous, but if they dare him he will show a moment of mercy simply to see the hope in their eyes before he snuffs out that light.
He toys with victims as a cat would a mouse, uncaring and unknowing of the true extent of their suffering, for he has never suffered such, not physically. No one has dared put him under his own knife, no one has bested him in such a way yet.
One day his rank will mean nothing. His reputation will simply be the intel used against him. The fearful and loyal crewmates alike will stand aside and watch as he is torn down into who he truly is, all finery and facades skinned from his body.
Kane will look down at him and there will be no emotion, no triumph or pity or anger. There is nothing there for the clockworks to feel, and so reputation is nothing to them.
Alexander will relearn old tricks and cower like a beaten dog, barking uselessly only to be struck again. He will quiet once he realizes the helplessness of the situation, how little hope he has of rescue, how hopeless it is to need a rescue in the first place.
He will lose the last remnant of his parents.
He will lose an eye.
And he will lose all respect any of the others had for him, replaced instead with intertwined pity and compassion, a sickening combination.
He will be curled up in agony and so very small for all his twenty-four years of age, blood gushing from his face as his partner picks him up and holds him as easily as one would a child.
He will turn away from his crew, into the empty chest of his clockwork partner, and whine in pain and fear and humiliation.
No one will expect any more of him and that alone ruins Darling Alexander Dove.

THE CHAIN │our flag means death.
000 ༄ an introduction.
Tumblr media
Mary Elizabeth Ormond was a woman of many contrasts, a blend of privilege and adversity that shaped her into the remarkable individual she became. Born in the genesis of spring in 1689, she carried the weight of being the tenth Mary in her esteemed familial line, a legacy that both burdened and inspired her.
From her earliest days, Mary was surrounded by abundance. Her family ensured she lacked for nothing. Precious jewels adorned her head, neck and fingers, and a myriad of dolls filled her playroom. Her parents valued education, providing her with opportunities to learn and grow. Yet, it was not these lavish gifts that left an indelible mark on her character; rather, it was the experiences she had never wished for that would define her path.
The late 17th century was an era of both hope and challenges, particularly in the bustling city of Stoke on Trent. The labour prospects were bright for the ambitious young men venturing into the world of work, but for the once-powerful and snobbish men like Mary's father, William Ormond, the changing times brought about hardships. William had owned one of the largest coal mines in the city, and for a time, his wealth and influence were unassailable. However, as more and more competitors emerged, undercutting his prices and usurping his land and workers, his grip on the coal distribution market began to crumble. The Ormond family soon found themselves in the grip of financial ruin.
As the family's fortunes declined, Mary's once-thriving household began to disintegrate. Her father's frequent absences left her feeling abandoned within the confines of their shrinking residence, while her mother's mental health deteriorated in tandem with their social standing. William's sporadic returns brought little solace, as he arrived with meagre trinkets to pawn or livestock to barter with. But it was on her 17th birthday, mere months after her mother's departure from this world, that Mary's life would take an unexpected turn.
At the sound of her father's heavy boots, Mary eagerly greeted him, but her excitement turned to surprise and curiosity upon seeing the wealthy-looking man at his side – Sir Haversham. Despite her father's attempts to maintain composure, the stark contrast between his worn appearance and Haversham's opulence betrayed the depths of his struggles. Haversham, exuding pride and prosperity, seemed an enigma compared to William's downcast demeanour and hidden worries.
Little did Mary know that the dalliance between these two men would set off a series of events that would lead her far away from the life she had known and towards another.
𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
Our story sets sail in the quaint coastal town of Broadstairs. Located a considerable 250 miles from her former home, the fishing village played host to an eclectic congregation of people.
Venturing towards the shore was only beneficial for those wishing to buy fish straight from the fishermen that caught it, otherwise, it was a boring, foul-smelling assembly of stone houses. In fact, the only redeemable feature of the seaside town was the public house, nestled just on the cliff face. This was where Mary Elizabeth Ormon resided.
1717. The Golden Age of Piracy.
At 28 years of age, she had embraced a life far different from the opulent beginnings she once knew. No longer surrounded by jewels and dolls, she now served drinks to the locals and travellers who sought refuge in the warmth of the public house.
Mary had settled within the confines of the pub, serving drinks at night and watching the cold wretched seas by day. There, she would watch the boats as they arrived at the dock, most of the vessels were small fishing boats, returning with their catch to be sold to the townsfolk. But occasionally, her eyes would catch sight of something grander – a large vessel, one with great bellowing flags, and manned by a crew that emanated a sense of both adventure and danger.
Although Broadstairs was not a typical destination for such ships, Mary had managed to deduce three possible reasons for their arrival. They were either:
An English or French naval ship, seeking to replenish their supplies before continuing their journeys. These visits were a reminder that even in this remote coastal town, the influence of larger powers could be felt.
Perhaps, Travelling merchants who had lost their way, seeking shelter in the safety of Broadstairs. These wanderers carried tales from distant lands, speaking of exotic places and people with customs vastly different from those of the villagers.
Or the third. Pirates.
It was the sight of the pirate ships that stirred trepidation within Mary's heart. With their daring exploits and legendary quests for riches, they had become the stuff of myth and legend. The tales of their escapades were both thrilling and terrifying, and they captured the imaginations of those who heard them. However, Mary had no intention of hearing these yarns.
Every time a ship docked, she observed as the men disembarked from the ships, scanning their faces before turning her attention to those who lingered behind. She was cautious enough to avoid being shooed away as a potential stowaway or being propositioned by the men that stumbled around the docks.
In her search, she sought a specific man, or perhaps another; uncertainty clouded her mind whenever she thought about it. Her only hope was that the gracious god above would guide her to the right one. Yet, he had failed her many a time before.
It was on a cold morning that she found herself, searching the men of a peculiar boat. Peering from beyond the warmth of her cloak, she observed a group disembarking the ship. Ragged and filthy, none of these men matched the ones she sought, yet she was certain they were pirates. Feeling assured they were at a safe distance, she resolved to get a better view of the ship, hoping to catch a glimpse of the flag that had been rather poorly tucked away.
Edging closer and closer to the ship, she hadn't expected two more figures to saunter down the gangplank of the grand vessel. A frosty breath escaped her mouth as their eyes met, prompting her to quickly pull down her hood, seeking some semblance of shielding.
"Hey, now you scallywag!" a rather posh voice called out, the speaker scuttling toward her. Stepping back quickly, Mary held her hands up, apologizing.
"I wasn't trying to-" "-Now now." The man interrupted, "I'd rather you ask than steal. There's more than enough to go around." He smiled generously. It was only now that Mary noticed his distinct attire, setting him apart from the rest of the men. He wore a sharp blue overcoat adorned with golden applique, complementing his sandy blond hair. His companion, a brunet, donned a deep red cropped jacket with a fringed hem, appearing a little more dishevelled than the older gentleman. And Mary was sure he was a gentleman.
"Well, actually, Captain-" the brunet attempted to barter, yet his ever-interrupting captain spoke above him. "-Not now Lucius. We must take this poor soul for supper." The gentleman stepped forward, and Mary's eyes widened as he reached for her hood, pushing it backwards to reveal her ginger hair, which was partly matted as the curls whipped in the wind. The blond man seemed taken aback.
"A lady?" he questioned, causing his scribe, Lucius, to squint at him, while the woman opposite looked down at her own attire, a very obvious dull red floor-length skirt and a bodice laced up in the front.
Mary and the scribe shared a look before turning back to the blond, a vacant expression on his face. "She's wearing a dress." the brunet quipped, the left side of his mouth raising, in tandem with his eyebrow as his left hand clutched a large intricate book and his right hand pointed flatly towards the girl,
"I don't like to judge, Lucius." The blond retorted, which Mary was almost certain was to save face. However, she hadn't much time to ponder the man's character before he extended his arm for her to take. "Now, m'lady," he paused as he almost forced her delicate hand to wrap around the crook of his inner elbow, "How about a nice cup of tea?" he proposed, swiftly pivoting to lead the way back onto the ship. The brunet stomped after them, muttering a little plea of salvation.
