Disclaimer: Fanfiction is for fun times and it doesn't have to be "good" to exist and be shared!! Also just like all advice in the world YMMV (your mileage may vary) and the fact is that the best writing advice is whatever gets you writing!

STEP ONE of good characterization:

YOU ARE NOT THE CHARACTER. THE CHARACTER IS NOT YOU. STOP RELATING TO THE CHARACTER.

They do not think the way you think. They will not react the way you react. They don't have your morals, preferences, tastes, fashion sense, etc etc etc.

You are not the guy.

You must appreciate them as a separate person. Only once you have separated them from yourself in your heart can you start on the road to knowing your blorbo....

STEP TWO of good characterization:

When asking any question about the character at all, START FROM CANON.

If the exact answer is not in the canon, pick the CLOSEST scenario / fact / interaction, and work from there.

Example: Blorbo has never seen Glup Shitto held at gunpoint. But Blorbo was really angry when Glup Shitto's diary was stolen, and freaked out during another life or death situation.

Held at gunpoint is like 10x more fucked up than the diary so make Blorbo's like 10x angrier and similarly freaked out.

STEP THREE of good characterization:

For details that are not addressed at all in canon, use THEMES, GENRE, and CHARACTER ARCHETYPE/ROLE to create a believable rendition of the character.

Don't forget to include any quirks that significantly set them apart from similar characters when choosing these things btw.

Your BRILLIANT POWERFUL SCIENTIST may have dark polished hardwood furniture that speaks to sophistication but show her love of travel with tchotchkes from around the world.

Your ANGTSY MANPAIN MAN may choose military combat gear but wear pink socks because his daughter picked them out.

Your MANIC PIXIE DREAM GUY may love jogging with his cute dog in the park but reveals hints of a DARK PAST in his music playlist. And in the gun he keeps in his fanny pack.

Don't forget that other characters likely have their own knowledge and opinions of blorbo that you can draw from. If Glup Shitto is consistently wrong about blorbo and thinks blorbo is probably a good cook, make blorbo a bad cook. If Glup Shitto is blorbo's childhood best friend and used to play doll murder courthouse a lot, it's a good stretch to say that blorbo may have played doll murder courthouse as a child too, and this was something they did together.

STEP FOUR of good characterization:

DO A LITTLE RESEARCH!!

The character almost certainly hasn't taken the exact life path as you. If they are from a different area, look into cultural norms that may differ from yours.

No one is expecting you to be the foremost scholar on Japanese etiquette or British regional slang, but a little can go a long way.

People in places with socialized healthcare should not be worrying about medical bills, blorbos in tropical areas will not experience the seasons as much as you might, other cultures attitudes towards nudity/sex/drugs may be wildly different to yours.

IF you actually have relevant experience then feel free to use it in your fics. But don't forget that you are not the guy! Really think through how their perspective may differ even in the same situation.

STEP FIVE of good characterization:

PUT LOVE INTO IT AND HAVE FUN!!!

If you don't love Glup Shitto, don't write about them! If you're not having fun, hit the bricks!

Hello, pile 3! Your inner child's energy is like a fire-cracker. They have a very spicy energy but it feels very tame. An outside force (probably a mother or another feminine role model) definitely shoved them in a box early on. Your spicy energy goes unappreciated by you because of how some of your inner child has been hidden away. Two things I think would be important for you to know about this. “Flowers, huh?” He asks with a chuckle, deliberately ignoring Sal’s ever growing smirk, and Vivie nods fiercely. 

“It’ll make him happy, Daddy, I promise!” She tells him, and wow. Is Tommy really going to take dating advice from his five-year-old? 

With a smile, he realizes that he might, and that he’s already wondering if Evan would prefer lilies or roses. And then he decides that, whatever flowers he gets, they need to be yellow, because the man is bright like the sun, and that’s what Tommy likes the most about him.

“Alright, if I’m stopping by a flower shop, I have to go or I’ll be late,” He decides, and then he presses a kiss to Vivie’s forehead. “Be good for uncle Sal, will you, pixie?”

“Of course, Daddy! Will you say good night to me when you come back?” She asks, and Tommy nods, pinching her chin affectionately. 

“Yeah, baby, I promise”, he tells her, and Vivie beams as if he promised her the world. 

She wraps her arms around his neck, and Tommy tries not to feel guilty for doing this. Ever since she was born, he hasn’t dated much, because she’s been his priority. And frankly, he hadn’t met anyone that would make him truly want to date. Not until Evan. And as happy as Tommy is, he wonders if he should.  

Sal seems to sense what he’s thinking, because he gives Tommy an unimpressed look, crossing his arms. He comes closer, making sure Vivie is not hearing them.

“Go. I haven’t seen you do something for yourself in five years, Tommy. Vivie will be fine. You deserve to have a life too.”

“Thanks, Sal,” Tommy says, squeezing his shoulder. “And thanks for taking care of her.”

“What are you two talking about?!” VIvie asks curiously, and Tommy chuckles. She’s way too curious for her own good. 

“I was just reassuring your daddy that we will not watch movies until late, and that I won’t let you have chocolate popcorn”, Sal tells her with a wink, and Vivie giggles.

Tommy does his best to hold his laughter, pointing at the two of them. 

“Behave, you both. I’ll see you later,” He tells them, and with a last kiss to Vivie’s forehead, he’s gone to wait for his Uber. 

As he stands on the sidewalk, Tommy takes a deep breath, and smiles like a besotted idiot, his heart beating fast in his heart. And he wonders, briefly, if Evan is as nervous as him. 

Selfishly, he hopes the answer is yes.

i’m so happy i’ve been a part of this little community for as long as i have. everyone is super nice and inspiring and unbelievably talented, and im so glad to be posting content with people like y’all.

it’s absurd to think i’ve been doing this for 3 years and that i almost have 800 people here seeing it, but the love and support i’ve received over these years has been incredible. given that this is such a small community and i’ve either spoken with most of you or have at the very least interacted with your content, i feel confident in saying that every single person here is incredible in their own right and truly are the reason i stay here. you guys are genuinely the best, even if i forget to answer your asks or sometimes leave you on read for a while (i do that with everyone i’m so sorry) i mean it when i say that i do consider a good portion of you my friends. even if it’s been a while since we messaged or talked, you’re all awesome. and if i don’t know you personally, please feel free to message me! i love making friends, especially in a community like this that has time and time again proven to have some of the genuinely nicest people on the internet <3

Happy discovery of l'art du crime, this show is a gem 🥰💕

I used to adore HPI too, but unfortunately season 3's very last scene completely ruined the show for me. I won't go into details since I've already written extensively about it here but feel free to check the post I just linked if you'd like to. Season 4 absolutely confirmed my feelings as I found the show boring, self-caricaturing, unfunny, and mostly devoid of all the sparkly, quirky energy that I used to love about it.

Although this is only my opinion, and you'll find several blogs on here that are definitely still enjoying the show and creating fannish content, from the top of my head @humanbra @wegottastaytogether @renegadesstuff @pixie-hood @whattraintracks @ncismelanie @izalleen @jmeclatejerome @uponanightsky @luluonthemoon (apologies to anyone I forgot)

okay so this may be a bizarre question but it’s been bouncing around in my head a lot. when silver and gold get their new forms, are they still robotic or like, partially organic? as organic as a fairy can be anyway.

Cleaning out the ask box- sorry I didn’t see this one sooner!

Honestly I was picturing the pixie AU pairs as like, HALF organic? Like thier augments are definitely IN THERE, but it’s more metal-embedded-in-biological than metal-designed to LOOK biological, if that makes sense?

For example, there’s actually no eyes under the visors, those simply ARE thier eyes. Same with thier jetpacks/propellers being stand-ins for wings, and thier hands having ‘claw’ augments over the thumb and pointer fingers- they didn’t have to REMOVE anything or any other disturbing explanation, they just look like dat!

Silver and gold DEFINITELY have a hard time getting used to thier depth perception lol, and the wings working completely differently than the propellers would be Very jarring I imagine ☠️☠️

I’d say the ONLY ‘robotic’ thing about retired silver and gold would be thier voices! They just kinda still sound “like that” lol 😂

(Honestly idk much about fairy “biology” and would need to look into it more, but hopefully this answered your question! 🫶💕)

I had an awful week and a horrible day (just moments ago, I had a door slam close on my finger, it hurts like hell and is swollen now✨)

(To answer my own question, I would want to be Estella Havisham, from Great expectations. I simply love that novel, and I feel like Estella was somehow at the heart of it all. She had the power to make things right. I would want her to be a friend to Pip, and for her to help Mrs Havisham move on)

Okay, so...

If we're talking books, I think I'd make a solid replacement for either Claire Beauchamp/Fraser from Outlander, or Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. If we're talking movies, I'd take Rey's position and sort out Ben Solo/Kylo Ren approximately a movie and a half sooner.

I really can't. Or, I probably can, but I don't particularly like to. I love to read poetry, but okay...here goes:

There once was a 'dull' man named Kento,

And all the hoes cried, 'He's a 10, though!'

So we wrote and we wrote,

In our fics he must go!

Back to life; what a guy! Our dear Kento.

Side note: I did actually repeatedly win a Valentines' 'two line poetry' competition that my high school's English Department hosted every year. I sent them in anonymously, and revealed myself when I'd won them. I can't recall them all, but one that won me the prize was: "Star-crossed lovers, Jack and Jill/ Gettin' jiggy on the hill", so we can see that I actually showed early promise for being an insatiable hoebag.

I love the Great Expectations aspirations! So many books would be over faster with a MC with some oomph behind them, right? But, then...we wouldn't have the book, so...yeah.

It’s dark when Luke wakes. It always is. He rolls over on the mattress and grabs blindly for the clock on the nightstand, presses it to his ear and toggles the button at the back. In a low, droid-like voice, it tells him the time is two minutes before his alarm. He scrambles to turn the alarm off before it can sound out, shrill and piercing and entirely too loud. Then, he sets the clock back onto the nightstand and sits up, making to swing his legs over the edge of the bed. He’s foiled by a strong, warm pair of arms sneaking around his middle and pulling him back under the covers.

Luke sighs. It’s not exactly unpleasant, the warm weight of a body making him lie back down and crawling into his arms and settling on his chest, but– “I have to get up. I set that alarm for a reason, you know?” Whatever Din mumbles in response, it’s lost to the covers and to the sensitive skin of the crook of Luke’s neck. “Aww.” Luke buries his left hand in a shock of soft locks. He doesn’t know what color they are. He doesn’t care. “I’m sorry, baby. Did I wake you up?” “Hrrmmaybe,” Din rumbles, voice still thick with sleep which only helps to confirm Luke’s suspicion. Din’s a deep sleeper. If asked, he’d deny it, say that the merest shift in somebody’s breath could wake him. That might’ve been true once upon a time, but not so much anymore. Not since he and Luke got this darkened room with a lock on the door and shutters that are always closed. Din also sleeps in a lot. He didn’t use to do that, either, or so he swears, up and down. Considering the many mornings Luke has seen Din emerge from their bedroom well past noon, he sure does sleep in now. “Hey, tell you what.” Luke threads his fingers through the short strands of hair at the nape of Din’s neck before he cups the curve of Din’s skull. “If you let me up now, you can go back to sleep. Doesn’t that sound nice?” If anything, Din only presses his face deeper into the crook of Luke’s neck, his meticulously kept beard scraping against Luke’s sensitive skin. He doesn’t sound any more awake when he mutters, “Your mind tricks won’t work on me, Jedi.” Luke laughs, both from Din’s beard tickling his neck and the impossibility of the situation. “Then maybe this will,” he says, pulls Din up by the hair – gently – and presses a wet kiss to his forehead. Din grunts, going liquid in Luke’s arms. Luke uses the little leverage he’s gained to prop himself up on one elbow as he continues peppering Din’s face with kisses – one to his chin, one to the tip of his nose, three to his cheeks and yet another one against his forehead. With every single one, Din gives more ground – until Luke can flip them over, Din on his back and Luke hovering over him in the dark. The last kiss is a close-lipped, dry thing against Din’s mouth, the gentlest of pressures. Neither of them really appreciates morning breath, anyway, but Luke can’t help it – he stays there for several rises and falls of Din’s chest, flesh-and-blood palm pressed over Din’s chest and the slowly beating heart within. Din hums against him, all sleep-addled, pure, radiant joy. When Luke finally draws back, his cheeks feel so hot he’s surprised they don’t glow in the dark. “Do you yield?” he asks, tracing Din’s collarbone until he’s thumbing the jagged curve of his shoulder. Din’s breath is an almost inaudible thing fluttering through the dark. “Always.” Luke smiles down at him even though neither of them are able to see it. He should really get up, get ready for the day, but– “You’re beautiful.” A sharp intake of breath. A pause. “How do you know that?” “I don’t need to see you to know, Din.” Luke’s hand finds Din’s at first try, brings it up so he can press a dry kiss to the back of it. It’s warm against Luke’s mouth, pulsing with life. “You are kind, discerning, and more generous than you know. You’re a good man. You are you.” There’s a rushed breath, and then, a very, very low “Oh.” And that’s as much as Luke gets. And it’s enough. He gives Din’s hand one last squeeze before he lowers it back down onto Din’s chest, scoots off the mattress and stands to pick his way through the dark to the door. For once, he doesn’t stub his toe. He pauses with one hand on the doorknob and turns his head. “Go back to sleep. And see you in the afternoon.” The only answer he gets is a soft snore. He saves his chuckle until he’s slipped out onto the hallway and has closed the door behind himself.

When he goes to dress in the ‘fresher and looks at the holo chrono there, he finds he’s running ten minutes late.

About Fairy Best Friends

Fairy Best Friends is an indie animated series that I making from scratch, by myself! It follows the fairies, Juliette and May on their quest to help the fairies of the Cloud Queendom, which they call home. There is a strange disease stealing fairies’ wings, so they must deliver a letter to their ally, the Butterfly Monarch, asking for aid.

About the world:

Fairyland is made up of four main regions: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. The Cloud Queendom, ruled by Queen Arabella, exists in the clouds above Summer. Each region (including the fifth, Sky region) is home to a different race of fae, along with various other beings like pixies and the occasional human. The Sky region is populated by the affinity fairies. Affinity fairies are unique in that each fairy is born with a particular power (their affinity), which they can develop and use throughout their life! They are rare to see on land because they are from a help-giving culture, and other races have learned this and will take advantage of them if given the chance. So, they live happily on the clouds instead!

May’s affinity is plant-based, and quite straightforward! Juliette, however, has not developed an affinity, something nearly unheard of. There is a superstition, though, that only great-grandfairies truly believe, that the longer it takes for an affinity to become clear, the more rare and powerful it will be..

About the characters:

Juliette Valennia is a young noblewoman, the daughter of Duchess Isadora Valennia, who grew up in the palace with her cousin, Prince Skye. She has a great passion for literature and though she lacks an affinity, she more than makes up for it with her clever intellect.

May Demethea grew up in one of the other cloud cities as one of five siblings, and came to the capitol to pursue a career in horticulture. She is one of the kindest fairies you’ll ever meet, and leads entirely with her heart. If only she knew just how wonderful she truly is.

Juliette and May have been best friends since they met in the first week of academy, and now that they’ve graduated, it’s time for them to forge their own paths! And as long as they are together, no dream is impossible!

The council was not very helpful. And by council he meant his ward and young cousin he had gone to for an opinion on what to buy for Valentine's Day.

Crowley sat on the living room floor of Ramshackle, his laptop open in front of him on the coffee table,several tabs open to various shopping websites. His coat and hat tossed aside on the nearby chair. He wishes he was better at gift giving. He had known Clara for years, getting her a gift should have been easier than this.

Dreary and Isabelle also sat on the floor, just as perplexed, eating the snacks he brought to bribe them into helping him.

“What about shoes?” Isabelle suggested through a mouth half filled with candy, “She always has the best shoes.”

“ Yes, but what kind?” That had been his first thought. “She buys every pair she wants from all her favorite brands. Everytime I peak at her wishlist it's seems to be after she's already bought them.”

“You mentioned she likes clothes,” Dreary said, “Maybe that? Or accessories, like a handbag.”

“Similar problem,” Dire said as he looked through the tabs of all her favorite shops. There was very few things Clara did not possess. If she didn't, it was not her style at all. He had known her long enough to tell her taste at a glance and somehow that made it all the more difficult to find something just right.

“What do you normally do for Valentine's anyways?” The prefect asked.

“A standard card, and flowers she likes,” Crowley replied, thinking of all the years past. They had been standard gifts, and he never forgot a year. “But I want to do something different this year, even if it's a small gift.”

“But why?” Dreary asked, leaning forward with her chin resting in her hands. Isabelle leaned forward as well. “What changed?”

Suddenly the Headmage felt coming to Ramshackle was a mistake as both girls looked at him expectantly for an answer. He cleared his throat and tried to play it off. “No reason. Just felt doing something different to show my appreciation for my fellow Headmage.”

“Uh huh. Now what's that real reason?” Isabelle replied, clearly not buying a word of it.

“It's ok, Dire. You can tell us.” Dreary said softly.

Crowley knew they would not leave him alone now. He could already picture them in his office pestering to tell. “I just… Want to make it special this year. Nothing big has happened to warrant it I suppose. I simply want to give her something she deserves for a change.”

“Translation: You like her and want to actually shoot your shot.” Isabelle said.

“Not how I would have put it, but in a manner of speaking, yes.”

Dreary seemed excited at this development. “That's sweet! I think this will go well.”

“Before you get your hopes up, I need a gift.”

“Ok well what does she like besides fashion?” Isabelle asked as she grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil. “You might be able to narrow it down more if you just make a list.”

“Besides clothing and shoes, she has one of the biggest sweet tooths I think I've ever seen. Especially for pumpkin flavored treats. Pie, coffee, you name it. It's one of the few things she refuses to share. She loves pastel colors. If it comes in a soft pink or blue, she'll take it everytime. Oh, she loves Romance movies and novels. She always insists she doesn't cry at them, but the happy endings always get to her-”

Dreary and Isabelle glanced at each other as Dire rambled on about Headmage Cristalería.

“-and don't even get me started on her and the autumn time-”

“Dire!” Dreary interrupted. “What about hobbies?”

“Hm? Oh she absolutely adores miniatures.”

“Miniatures?” Isabelle asked. “Like dollhouse stuff?”

“Yes, she's always found them cute. But she likes making and getting them for her mice and the pixies of White Ash to enjoy. She also adores her mice. She's told me she's looked after the mice in the school since she was a child, they mean a great deal to her.” As he said it, Dire finally had an idea. “Wait a minute.”

“What?” Dreary leaned over to see what he was looking up and smiled approvingly. “These are adorable.”

Isabelle peeked as well at the screen to look at the online store Dire was scrolling through. “Aw. She'll like these.”

“I hope so.”

“Good morning, Prudence.” Clara greeted her assistant as she walked into the main office of the school.

“Good morning, Headmage.” The woman replied with a nod of her head.

“Anything of note this morning?”

“No, but a delivery came for you shortly after I came in. I left it on your desk.”

“Delivery?” Clara asked, trying to think of what it could it could be. “I wasn't expecting any deliveries.”

“It's seems to be a gift, ma'am. The tag said it was from Mr. Crowley of Night Raven.”

“Ah, I see. I'll take a look at it now. Thank you Prudence.” Clara opened the door to her office and was immediately greeted to the sight of a bouquet of white and pink roses in a glass vase on her desk.

She smiled at the sight as she admired the flowers, picking out the card that was addressed to her from it.

Then she noticed the two small boxes as well. One of the mice that was always sniffing around her office seemed rather interested in the smaller box. Opening it, she noticed it had the logo of a bakery she regularly went to, so she was delighted to see it full of her favorite pumpkin cookies inside. She was already thinking of how they would taste with her morning coffee. Before she got ahead of herself, she opened the slightly larger box. In it was a miniature open carriage. Pink with all the intricate little details molded onto the side painted in silver, it's little seats made with a soft white material. Clara thought it was adorable with all its little details. She set it down, the mouse scurried over to it to investigate. Crawling in, the little seat was just the right size for the little creature.

“Is that comfortable, Augusta?” Clara asked as she reached over to pet her.

Augusta the mouse squeaked in approval.

The fae woman chuckle to herself a bit before finally opening the card.

Clara smiled. As obnoxious as Dire was, he knew when to be sweet. She picked up her phone as she sat in her chair, looking at Augusta the mouse drift off to sleep in the tiny carriage.

“Good morning, Clara.”

“I did, I wanted to call and thank you. They're very sweet.”

my love languages are quality time and gift giving. im not entirely opposed to the other love languages but i definitely need to be warned before touch occurs or we've already established that we're both okay with touching each other. i personally prefer creating personalised gifts by engraving intricate patterns into pockets, writing them letters or just creating a little gift bag of the things they've had their eyes on

appearance-wise, im pretty short. roughly around 5'1-5'3. im also chubby but that's not something i get insecure about often - that doesn't mean i flaunt my figure or anything though, just simply indifferent. i like dying my hair but my go to colour is a dark ashy purple. i only have my lobes and my septum pierced but im considering getting more. im very pale and im absolutely covered in freckles. as for wardrobe, i either dress like a manic pixie dream girl or i go all out as morticia addams.

i enjoy helping people out, but if it requires physical lifting, then it's a no can do, due to my disability limiting what i can and can't lift

I love this on two levels

1) Riven accepts his mistakes, that no one has to forgive him, and plans to work to make what he fucked up better with no expectations from the people he hurt
