Galactic transit.
Originally completed 31st July 2024.
My interpretation: In the far future, humanity has expanded beyond our solar system and now spans the galaxy. But galactic civilizations need to transport, trade, and organise people and materials. At this mixed space port, passenger, freight, and commercial spaceships can be docked. It is an important hub in this system and is often frequented by massive star cruise ships that transport tourists and workers from star to star. On this occasion, a scientific exploration vessel is approaching the port attempting to seek a birth so its tired crew may find some rest and relaxation at the port before heading back out on another expedition.

Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Round 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries below:
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants spend most of their time without a gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.
Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers series) by Becky Chambers
Rosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain.
Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. It’s also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn’t part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary’s got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs—an experience that teaches her about love and trust, and that having a family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe.

I was a moon orbiting an alien planet. I started getting slowly closer to the planet while shrinking in size. I eventually slammed down into an ocean. Destroying the planet.

[Top image: the Tarantula Nebula as imaged by Hubble; middle image: the Tarantula Nebula as imaged by JWST; bottom image: R136 as imaged by Hubble in ultraviolet and visible light.]
The Tarantula Nebula is an H II region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Despite being 160,000 light years away, it has an apparent magnitude of 8; it is so bright that if it was as close as the Orion Nebula (1,500 light years away) it would cast visible shadows at night-time on Earth. R136, the central cluster of stars in the nebula, provides most of the light that illuminates the nebula. It is a region of intense star formation, with all stars in the cluster being less than 2 million years old, containing many extremely massive young blue stars.
The Tarantula Nebula contains some of the most massive stars known, including BAT99-98 (~226 solar masses, five million times as luminous as the Sun), R136a1 (~196 solar masses, 4.7 million times as luminous as the Sun), and Melnick 42 (~189 solar masses, 3.6 million times as luminous as the Sun).
