lady detective
cisgirl is puzzled.
her friend's gender is a puzzle.
the social construct of gender is a puzzle.
cisgirl wonders if her gender is a puzzle, too.
she looks in the toys and game amazon department.
it takes a while, but eventually she finds one that looks like her,
or at least looks enough like her to pass,
and it's the only one with packaging not designed
to withstand a nuclear bomb.
cisgirl opens the box and dumps all the pieces on the table.
she looks for the edges, the flat cut-offs of expectation.
if she can piece together the puzzle's border,
the boundaries she cannot - must not - ever cross,
perhaps she will be able to define herself
by way of negative space.
cisgirl is not very good at puzzles.
she tries to spin the pieces in her head, listening for the click
of tumblrs falling into place. it never comes.
she is growing frustrated now, sick of this self-examination.
she begins to force the pieces into place, utterly determined
to finish by any means.
cisgirl is still puzzled.
her friend’s gender is still a puzzle.
the social construct of gender is still a puzzle.
cisgirl is determinedly ignoring any and all signs
that perhaps - just perhaps - her gender is a puzzle too.

i am tired of being haunted
by ghosts that never even
had the guts to love me
while they were still alive.
i will not grieve something
that never existed.
you cannot make me.
not this time.
not again.

"
we could never have loved the earth so well
if we had had no childhood in it,
if it were not the earth,
where the same flowers come up again every spring,
that we used to gather with our tiny fingers.
what novelty is worth that sweet monotony
where everything is known and loved,
because it is known?
"

[naming myself litany, with names redacted]
At work, they call me M---.
A good, sensible name. A exquisite-handwriting name.
M--- is the name of a woman who gets things done.
M--- is the name of a woman who always has three pens, two spare hair ties, and an extra postage stamp,
just in case.
M--- is my worksona.
At home, they call me M------.
A good, comfortable name. A jumprope-rhyme name.
M------ is the name of a girl who never learns to be afraid.
M------ is the name of a girl who throws herself off of swings, out of trees, into the surprised arms of the world,
laughing all the way.
M------ is the sunlight visible in the cracks of my marrow.
There is power in the naming of things.
I name you, self.
I name you daughter.
I name you sister.
I name you eldest-of-three.
I name you cannot-sit-still.
I name you runs-into-walls.
I name you talks-too-loud.
I name you reads-too-much,
needs-too-much,
cries-too-often.
I name you missing-stair,
avoided-bruise,
test-of-patience.
I name you elephant-in-the-story,
child-of-too-many-questions,
woman-who-sleeps-with-stuffed-animals.
I name you speaks-in-echoes.
I name you thinks-in-gifs.
I name you sings-off-key.
lullabye girl. changeling child. woman-of-the-laughing-hands.
hush now.
hush.
hush now, scared-of-shadows.
hush now, ghost-of-a-girl.
hush now, poem-afraid-to-be-written.
hush now.
hush.
I name you rocks-yourself-to-sleep.

Lord Byron was so fiercely loyal to Napoleon throughout his whole life, that the few times he ever criticized or reproached him is described by Dr. Adil M. Jamil as being something like “a quarrel between two devoted lovers.”
Napoleon was Lord Byron’s life-long idol and muse. “He saw himself in Napoleon, and Napoleon in him.”

Don't think you'll be getting to this one for a while, but I get the feeling that both of us came to the same conclusion that Langston is clearly the perfect man lol. So would it be ever so possible to get six-sentences about the cleft lip, cat dad of my/our dreams?
She'd made it all of a step away from the intercom when it crackled again.
"You know...I'm not really one for the more, uh, physical challenges I'm sure you're coming up against - honestly, between you and me, I've never even set foot on the field training course - but if you decided you needed a little extra help handling the creative aspects of this particular AWE, I'd be more than happy to - "
Jesse's hand was on the intercom button before an excuse could form, leaving her to scramble on dead air for a moment. "Hey, Langston, thanks, really, but you know, it's just that - " she froze for a beat as Polaris glimmered, filling the gaps she hadn't been able to plug herself, " - I've been picking up a lot of intel here in Investigations, and it sounds like artists need to steer clear of the Bright Falls AWE, so...you're...probably safer where you are, honestly."
She let go of the sending button, waiting and (knowing full well she was on camera) trying not to visibly cringe; a lifetime seemed to pass before the line crackled once more and Langston's voice projected outward, sounding equal parts thoughtful and relieved, "My rhymes have been described as both funky and fresh, I guess."
They sure have, buddy, Jesse thought to Polaris, raising a double-thumbs up over her head for the cameras to catch as she jettisoned off towards the blinking lights of yet another disaster, those are definitely, definitely the words I would've picked too.
six sentence sat(or)sunday!!!
