Tumblr's favorite animated movie!

What fans say:
Pokémon Heroes:
The setting is SO magical I’m assuming it’s inspired by Venice and I’ve always thought Venice is so beautiful… the villains are hot and they made me gay (plus one of them had an espeon, one of my favorite Pokémon). Also the end always makes me cry, I can’t do this really to this day I’m still too emotional. I also love the sibling relationship between Latios and Latias, I always say we need more siblings in media. Their relationship is touching. Ash, Misty and Brock are their usual perfect selves, nothing much to add there. Basically this movie is charming, sad, fun, and so magical and epic and cool TO ME. so there you have it.
Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva:
THE videogame movie. No videogame movie is better. An animated movie! With puzzles in it! And the original voice actors! And it's plot relevant! And it has the best mixture of nostalgic vs. new music for the soundtrack! Epic battles! Also, because it's a Layton thing, you cry at the end!!

"Watching Pokemon Heroes I thought Latias was the cutest jet plane dragon back then, but rewatching it I realized just how much of a bro Latios was. This is a mild exaggeration of what happens in the movie."

“IT IS SHE WHO DECIDES WHO STEADILY SLEEPS IN DEATH AND WHO RISES TO WALK THE EARTH AGAIN.”
Perfect day to reveal this character I made for Bliss a while back considering it’s literally the autumnal equinox! A very important figure in the world’s lore, The Equinox is the “Mother Cryptid”, basically what God (or what’s called “Numen” in this universe) is to humans/angels. Humans usually worship both deities— Numen for prosperity in life and Equinox for peace in death.
The Equinox is also the cause of one other thing: equinoxal cryptids. These are the cryptids that are born after death. When a living thing on the Overworld, like a human or animal, meets an untimely demise (which basically just means their time was cut short abruptly, one example being murder) their soul remains dormant for a little while and is placed into a “ballot-type system” in the Equinox’s care. Usually most souls will eventually pass this system and move on into proper afterlife. But sometimes these souls get pulled from said ballot system and are chosen to be reincarnated as a cryptid. Usually these equinoxal cryptids are one of a kind— they don’t follow any already existing species. They’re just them— no other cryptid quite like they are. These forms are often drawn to resemble something in their past life, which can be as mundane or representative as Equinox chooses. Their memories are also usually clouded after the process. Little details can often be recalled, but some are shrouded away. Some remember their deaths, others do not, or at the very least remember basic details of it. But some are left with vivid memories of it. There’s not really much telling why she does this— it’s a mystery left unknown. Perhaps it’s like doll making… crafting something you can love and tend to and hopefully pass on to the next person who will take care of it.
Equinox doesn’t really look too much into the lives of who she reanimates— not that she really can at all. It’s pretty much at random chance whatever soul she pulls out to recreate, regardless of what kind of person they were. Does she sometimes do this to the wrong people? Well… It’s not like it would be her fault if it ever came to that.
During the first day of Autumn, it is considered a celebratory holiday for Cryptids, but not a lot of actual celebrating gets to happen this day. It’s said that The Equinox’s connection with cryptickind is closer and stronger than ever as she roams around the overworld to spread autumnal joy, but this actually causes the Cryptids to become “overwhelmed” with the sensation and become very sluggish/sleepy/sickly. Despite that, it is still a happy holiday for them, equinoxal or not.

Lizzie Watches Anipoke, Special Edition: "Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias"
This movie was interesting. I enjoyed it well enough, but it's not my absolute favorite.
On a technical and artistic level, this movie had some really cool scenes. One that stood out to me is when Ash is chasing after Latias in the city, and there's a shot where he can't find her and the camera is spinning around to all the possible alleyways she could have taken. It has a dizziying effect on the viewer that helps to communicate Ash's state of disorientation after being lost in an unfamiliar city. Also, the 3D animation has improved vastly since Spell of the Unown, and it now looks far less out of place.
Speaking of things that look out of place, I could not take a single thing Lorenzo said seriously because of his goofy character design. Bro was talking about the word ending and I was just like "sure it is you eggman-lookin motherf*cker"
I was kind of annoyed that Misty and Brock got so heavily sidelined. I know Ash is the main character and all, but other movies have done better jobs at incorporating his traveling companions into the plot.
Conversely though, I actually liked that the Team Rocket trio had nothing to do with the plot and were just victims of circumstance throughout. The past few movies tried really hard to crowbar them into the plot where they really don't fit, so this was refreshing.
I'm pretty neutral on Annie and Oakley as characters. They existed. They made the plot. They filled time
Also is it just me or did 4Kids only have like 3 female voice actresses. It's starting to annoy me. The second Annie spoke I was like "oh hey Person With the Exact Same Voice as Nurse Joy and Clair and Several Other Characters"
The kiss was kinda weird. If it was Bianca, then that ship came out of nowhere. If it was Latias, then No. Just No
Also poor Latias lost both her dad and her brother?? Poor girl. At least their spirits get to fly around with her or whatever that was in the ending credits.
Also why were there like 3 different end credits songs
Overall review: enjoyable, with really good animation, but doesn't emotionally hit in the same way that something like Mewtwo Strikes Back or Spell of the Unown does.

PMD, but the human Hero becomes a baby/young Legendary or Mythical:
Rescue—Latios or Latias
Explorers—Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina (the Sinjoh Ruins event literally creates a lv 1 version of one of these three. Only freshly hatched Pokémon are level one!)
Gates—Genesect? Keldeo?
Super—Diancie? Zygarde 10%? Baby Lugia (One in the anime)? Mewtwo?
Can you imagine the various Pokémon’s reactions to this obviously young Legendary who has trouble controlling their powers? Especially, the Pokémon in Explorers to a young Dialga/Palkia/Giratina?
ooooooo my god
forget just turning into any pokemon and figuring out all the new stuff you can do, turning into any legendary makes that even WORSE
i love it
ngl, I kinda want to do a baby/young giratina explorers story now

You know, I'm beginning to think that Latias and Latios are some of the most unlucky fuckers in the entire Pokémon franchise.
Pretty much EVERY piece of Pokémon media, they end up having something TERRIBLE happening to them.
Pokémon Heroes? Hunted by poachers, Latios gets captured defending Latias and later dies in a tsunami
Pokémon Ranger Guardian Signs? The game's OPENING CUTSCENE is her or Latios (depending on which player character you pick) being chased and shot at by Pokémon Pinchers.
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? Hunted by Team Magma/Aqua, the other sibling has to find help
The Mystery Dungeon series? TWO rock related incidents!
Rescue Team? Latias gets struck by a meteor and crash lands in Pitfall Valley which is described in game as "wandering forever in the endless void, neither living or dying" which is TERRIFYING. Latios nearly gets arrested stealing TMs to get stronger so he can find her, fully intending to suffer with her
Super Mystery Dungeon? BOTH GET TURNED TO STONE. With their souls sent to the Voidlands where they're presumably hunted and consumed by Void Shadows. Which was reversible thankfully but GOOD GOD.
Poor babies can't catch a god damn break!

i should also say that if 430 confirms any of the supposedly-dead villains survived, it'll probably be in an ambiguous manner/soft confirmation, like seeing them again in a post-war context devoid of any other meaning. if anyone ever watched the credits of pokémon heroes, the scene of latias and two latios comes to mind. spoilers for a twenty-year-old movie:
it's not especially clear what those two latios are doing there, or how they got there, or whether they could possibly be the latios that sacrificed themselves, but it's a bit odd that the story speaks of a latios that sacrificed itself to save the city in the opening, and then another one does during the plot, and then in the end credits there are inexplicably and specifically two more of them - latios, a legendary pokémon of which there is supposedly, implicitly a limited quantity.
i am not insinuating that toga and shigaraki's identities should be ambiguous, but their survival likely would be. are they actually there, or is their presence symbolic? that would be the angle i'd expect.
