Polished Crystal Review and First Playthrough
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did a catch'em all first playthrought. It was great!
Despite being still in development, this Romhack is great. Is Pokemon Crystal with so many quality of life enhancements it's not funny. There is tons of bonus content, later series game mechanics, anime cameos and enhanced difficulty boss battles.
There loads of bonus areas and extra trainers, largely solving the level curve problems of crystal at the expense of making the game slightly more linear. The spritework is incredible, with the new areas looking great and the in-team sprites and future generation move animations looking both great and like they belong. There are even custom shinies.
This is HGSS+ using the Crystal game engine, and it's great. I have unlocked the new game plus, and I intend to use it sometime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyoko, my trust Sturdy Donphan who I meet as a level 2 Phanphy on Route 46. Sturdy works as a focus band, and with rollout and defense curl she was great early on and several early gyms need her help as my Chikorita starter was still even with the changes. Sturdy was great, as being able to ensure a knock off or earthquake was the key to several battles. She enabled me to beat the surprise level 80 Giovanni Mewtwo by heal spamming until it ran out of PP. I always wanted to use a Donphan in a playthrough of gen 2, and now I have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet Sayaka, a Guts Ursaring and Sayakas partner, caught in dark cave as a level 2 Tediursa. She too was great early game, hitting hard with strong physical type moves and doing great damage. After falling behind she evolved and spent the entire game hitting hard for massive damage. While sadly a bit slow and rarely getting in multiple attacks, when she hit she hit hard. Flame Orb is an item you get prior to E4 in game, and while she only got Facade in Kanto her friendship powered return hit hard. Ursaring was another Gen 2 pokemon I wanted to use in a playthrough, and she did fine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally Pearlshine, the egg Togepi with Serene Grace whose sing proved invaluable in catching mons and stunning bosses. After becoming the Johto Champion, I battled Cynthia and got a Shiny Togepi egg with Superluck, Aeroblast and Moonblast. Since regular Togekiss can't get Moonblast in this game, I swapped them and trained up Evanescence with an exp share. Both of them were great team mates, with Pearlshine being very bulky early on while Evanescence was far more offensive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hatched from daycare couple egg, was Pikablue the shiny blue Pichu who soon evolved into a blue Pikachu. Equipped with a Light Ball, I decided to evolve Pikablue into an Alolan Riachu as beating gen two with an Alolan Riachu seemed sweet. This took till after beating the elite four to find the item, but it was worth it. Rename Pancake, now with Motor Drive as the hidden ability and holding a focus sash, Pancakes was my fastest team member and could on rare occasion gets off a nasty plot to do massive damage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mastema, the Snow Cloak Glaceon was the Eevee I got from Bill. Needing to level up in Ice Path he spent a long time unevolved and doing poorly in my team. Upon evolving though he crushed Team Rocket and became a strong special attacker who spammed high power special moves. Using a Glaceon in Johto was fun, and with a choice band to actually outspeed late game opponents he was great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last, but certainly not least is Suicune, a pokemon I always wanted to use in a playthrought and my originally planned team member. She originally held an assault vest which worked well with Pressure, and was an extremely specially bulky team member whose final move was mirror coat. And then I beat Sabrina, got Calm Mind and she became my Ace Mon whose ability to set calm minds sweep is the only reason I was able to beat Red and Green, and was a key part of my rematch with Lance.

Videos Games #1, 7/30-8/5
I've always wanted a place to blab about whatever random game I'm playing. Livetweeting didn't work out, but maybe something like this will? If you don't want to see these posts, please block/filter the tag: #quetzlegaming
Games from this week: Pokemon Polished Crystal, Fool's Gold, Infinite Fusion. Palia MMO, and House Flipper (I fucking LOVE Johto)
Pokemon Polished Crystal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've got two badges and I just hit Goldenrod! Been loving all the upgrades this hack added to the main game: most HGSS stuff like Lyra, Proton, etc, mild "alt colors" for pokemon based on their DVs (you can see it most clearly in my slightly green Furret there), expanded route maps and hidden grottos... Oh there's in game wonder trade too! That's how I got Skarmory and Clefairy. The last egg there is the Odd Egg, still wondering what 'mon I'm gonna get from it. Pokemon Fool's Gold
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wild looking, ain't it? Fool's Gold is a bit like... if every pokemon in Johto was a "regional form", including its OG cast. From left to right, that's Pidgeotto, Jolteon, Wartortle, Quilava, Corsola, and Houndoom. (Pidgeotto and Quilava are shiny, too.) (Yes I'm playing with the built in shiny code active). They're a pretty great team, have carried me through six badges. 🥰 Literally every pokemon is different, and I've loved playing through the game and seeing familiar faces with a fresh coat of pixels. Pokemon Infinite Fusion
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went with a bit of a theme, obviously. Can you guess it? Can you guess all my favorite pokemons just from looking at one image? Jokes aside, I kind of loved how this team turned out in the end. Two witches and their familiars uwu. I played on the most chaotic randomizer settings, and I lucked out with it being generous with the eeveelutions. I beat IF this week, clearing Mt. Silver on Thursday. I know there's still some postgame stuff to do and I may get back to it eventually, but I think I'm ready to shelve the game for now. Some of the route design got hecka frustrating by the end. Man, I love Johto. Palia MMO
Tumblr media
I got in on the open beta this week! Just finished building my starter home last night. Really love the art style and environment design in this one, and goooosh the townsfolk are so cute. I already want to marry Jel. It's really scratching that farmer game itch, and I'm sure once they implement more minigames and areas to explore, I'm gonna get totally obsessed. Hopefully they'll have controller config set up for PC by full release, cuz my wrists are BEGGING me to play less KB+M games. Speaking of... House Flipper No pics for this one. I'm still in the early stages of the game where I only fix homes, not buy and flip 'em for sale, so I ain't got shit to show off. But GOSH it's like if they took AC's happy home paradise, mashed it with powerwash sim, and made a game *just* for me. It's so cathartic- at least when I'm not yelling at my customers for making TERRIBLE decisions that strip away any and all character in the home (yes, I'm complaining about the Michael B. job, you're a MONSTER sir/ma'am/they'm). Looking forward to making my first barbie dreamhouse at a later date.

IT'S SLOWHOG - IT'S THE BOY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slowhog is a gag fakemon whose stats are bad and movepool is bad and is bad. I love him. His lore is that he's highly edible, slow and weak. A slug/pig that recovers from steak being carved off it without issue. I want a plushie of him. The shiny version of him is green.
Tumblr media
I decided he needed to be explored in every way and typed him out like an eeveelution.
Tumblr media
Porkpast was well received.
Tumblr media
I know I did well when people pointed to each one and said it was slept on. Google 'Velvet Worm' and 'Sea pig'.
Having done all the types I moved onto Pre-evolutions.
Tumblr media
Brekkie won hands down, I'm sorry P-Flop lovers but there you are. It's shiny would also be green. The Progress of: Brekkie -> Slowhog -> Porkpast is the correct line as it's: Breakfast -> Lunch -> Digestion Digestion is also Dinner but lunch is haunting you.
Tumblr media
The Hogly Trinity
The Devs mentioned adding a new 'Strange' Type in the next update, which gave me something to new Hog with
Tumblr media
This satisfied me at the time.
Running out of Hogs to Pork Post with I moved on to special forms. His Oinks will save us from the Kaiju.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lack of new Hog made me plyable in my morals and I made meme material with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Hogchamp' is now a server emote.
At this point someone in the discord posted a Slowhog made in SPORE which I grasped onto as a new hog to draw. I was grateful for this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next came Pride Month, which is a time we draw Slowhog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously. This is Pridehog and it's shiny version. You did not need me to tell you this.
It had been a while since I had hogged. I awoke from a dream about pork and sketched this out on a loose sheet of Clipstudio raster layer I had laying next to my bed. This is a sound type, I think. I imagine hell sounds like this at all times, except when you say something embarrassing, at which point it all cuts out and everyone looks at you condescending.
Tumblr media
hink honk, honk, hinkhink honk - it went I tried to ignore it but the next dream told me I was 'needed'. I woke up uncomfortable and bussed into to the Sex Factory, where I work. My eyes were bleary after my shift (which I can't describe due to Tumblr's tos) and I stared at one of those bus seat patterns like you remember from school trips. I thought I was going mad. I took a picture.
Tumblr media
"Do you see this?" I asked the tall and busty woman who kept dropping her keys and saying whoops and bending over in front of me. The other woman who had her keys on a loop through her jeans kept staring at her, assumably in dismay at her lack of practical key handling. "Huh?" She said. "Sorry about my keys they-" I snapped my fingers rudely (I was scared) "Do you see that Pink pattern on the bus seats?" She looked confused and dropped her keys again. "No? They're fully blue." I looked back at the seats, they were fully blue. The picture on the digital camera I carry with me as an ironic anachronism displayed the slowhog pattern in full. I got off the bus and decided to draw some details on the Slowhog Evolutions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can also get Porkpast by inflating Hogone enough. You can't inflate Porkpast though, he's a ghost.
I felt refreshed, cleansed. But also a touch greasy. I had another dream, but this time the dream creature was a dog who spoke in polish and I realised I was just unhealthily sleep deprived.
Thank you for reading.
Tumblr media
Why not download Pokemon Quarantine Crystal for SameBoy or other good Emulators? Perhaps join the discord too. It's fun.

Sunday Spotlight: Magby
Tumblr media
Magby is an Electric/Rock-type Pokemon. Prolonged contact with the blue crystals on its body will result in a weak electric shock. Despite this, Magby seem to enjoy being polished by their trainers.
A species that resides solely in Chargestone Cave, it's theorized that long term consumption of the unique mineral deposits altered Magby's biology over time. Magby and the rest of its evolutionary line emit a small magnetic field from within their bodies, which interacts with the crystals that compose its body. This also allows them to hover slightly above the ground, manifesting as the Levitate ability. However, this magnetic field can also interfere with other Steel-type Pokemon.

Why do newer pokemon look so offputting? Older games had tons of diverse designs but newer ones look unfinished/not well thought out.
They might be. I dunno. There's a lot people have said about Game Freak's competency at handling the Pokemon franchise and how they've added too many new Pokemon to some of these games and are basically running the well dry on good ideas.
But I also just see it as, like, an extension of the Mighty No. 9 problem. I remember when we were still all starry-eyed and hopeful about Mighty No. 9, Inafune revealed the design and mentioned it had "increased detail to suit HD displays."
Tumblr media
So he's got all these colors and patterns and grooves and slots, when Mega Man was basically just a kid in his pajamas and three solid colors:
Tumblr media
Light blue, dark blue, and skin tone. That's it. That's all you needed.
And Inafune further explained that was because Mega Man had to be this tiny little 24x24 NES sprite. I'd have to look it up, but it wouldn't surprise me if the sprite came first. I know it definitely did with Mario.
Tumblr media
So this is like designing a character with the rawest, most basic building blocks you can get. You are not adapting the above character art into this sprite. Instead, you are making a character that has arms that are a separate color from his body, you are giving him pants to denote where his waist is, and you give him the biggest eyes on earth just so people can tell that's his face.
You have the smallest canvas imaginable and have to make sure people can understand they are not only looking at the shape of a human, but watching it animate in various different poses, all when it's run through somebody's crusty old RF patch cable on their 12" CRT TV:
Tumblr media
Whereas, in theory, Mighty No. 9 is going to be played at its native resolution in crystal clarity on a 40" flat panel display, potentially allowing you to see and understand a lot more detail.
Tumblr media
So now we circle back to Pokemon, and a lot of those first Pokemon look like this:
Tumblr media
They had a box, 56x56 pixels wide, just over double the size of NES Mega Man, and four colors of grey to work with. When viewed on a Gameboy screen, these monsters weren't even two inches tall. Those limitations meant they still had to keep things simple.
Whereas now, increased resolutions and screen clarity allows designs like these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the point I'm trying to make here is that simplicity and limitations give birth to clear, highly focused designs created to be instantly identifiable and recognizable at any distance or resolution. More detail does not necessarily make for a stronger character. You can absolutely get caught up in adding detail to compensate for a bad character design.
...At the same time, let's play devil's advocate here. Pokemon is a very different creature now than it was 25 years ago. A single new Pokemon design probably goes through this huge insane iteration process where all kinds of departments touch and approve the design so it can appear in the anime, it can appear in spinoffs, it can appear in merchandise, so on and so forth. We're miles away from the days where one guy comes up with all the Pokemon just because he thinks it would be funny to have a fat duck with a headache.
Maybe as much as anything, you could blame the increasingly complex production machine on why these Pokemon look like this. After all, even by the second generation of Pokemon games, they were constantly chasing the dragon of trying to find "the next Pikachu."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything has to be polished and smoothed down, while also showing the increased capabilities of the hardware, while also staying appealing to Pokemon's core demographics (there are multiples), while also being something they can sell toys and shirts and hats of, while also being noticeably new and different from existing Pokemon, so on and so forth, on and on and on again.
Having so many Pokemon in each new game probably gives them some leeway to experiment, but I'm sure some of these characters get beaten with creative hammers in the search of their next superstar.
On top of whatever qualms people might have with the state of Game Freak as it stands today.

This is probably going to come as a surprise to a lot of you, but I’ve decided to try half writing half drawing the next part. ( I was inspired by @loupy-mongoose do do this!)
Drawing everything has taken a serious toll on me, I enjoy it but I find myself getting burnt out after each part is finished. So we’ll just see how this goes! I might love it, I might hate it, we’ll just have to see.

The small Mewtwo and the strange human sat and stared at the other in shock. Iris’s eyes flicked from the bright green ones of the human in front of her and the darker green of it’s Pokémon companion’s. Her body felt frozen, and she struggled to inhale the frosty air as her mind raced with a thousand thoughts. “O-oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there!”
The stranger fumbled it’s words, mouth still agape at the strange Pokemon lying in front of it. Iris was still frozen on the ground, throat tight and chest heaving.
“I-”
WHEEZE-
“D-don’t-”
HGHHH-
Her words kept coming out half formed, and her chest convulsed in an attempt to get the oxygen she so desperately needed. A wave of terror crashed over her, sending her spiraling. She didn’t know what was happening- why was her body reacting like this? Her chest hurt, and despite the chilly weather her skin dripped with sweat.
The human was staring, staring right at her and she knew it was going to kill her, trap her, steal her away and never let her go. For a moment the world disappeared, and she was back in that room, that polished, cold room surrounded by white robed figures…
NO!!!
All of the fear, pain, and panic swirled together, condensing into a tight ball of terror in her chest that filled her body with only one need, a desperate need-
To escape
“AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!”
A scream burst out of her as the energy swirling within seemed to erupt out of her chest. With a final push of power, she teleported.
Iris opened her eyes.
She was surrounded by white, crystal leaves.
Her feet rested on a slick brown surface coated in ice, and she reflexively grabbed for something to hold onto. Her hands found the trunk and she clung to it.
She was in a tree, not too high above the ground but high enough to make her feel dizzy. She shut her eyes tight, taking a moment to let herself feel the relief of escape.
“…are you ok up there?”
She froze.
The voice came again.
“I’m sorry if I scared you. I just haven’t ever seen a Pokémon like you before, s-so I was a little startled.”
Crap. Crap crap crap.
She had teleported a mere 10 feet away, and was up in the high boughs of a tree easily in sight of the human.
“G-go away!”
“D-don’t h-hurt me!”
Iris choked out the words, voice and body shaking violently as she clung onto the trunk for support.
The human carefully stood up and brushed the snow off of its pants. It picked up it’s Pokémon and brushed the snow off of them, too.
“I’m not going to hurt you. I’d feel terrible if I did! Do you need help getting down?”
Iris hesitated.
She was still scared and shaking, but…
She was also a little curious. Sure, humans were bad, but she’d never actually talked with one before. The only stories she knew were what Aunt Mimi told her, and her memories were very fuzzy.
Auntie said humans were dangerous… but this one seemed different somehow. Less… scary.
Besides, it had promised not to hurt her. And promises were important to humans. At least, she thought so.
“N-no, I can get down ok…”
The human’s eyes widened.
“So you CAN talk… I thought I was imagining it before!”
Slipping and sliding, the little Mewtwo half climbed, half fell down the tree, landing with a thump on the snowy white ground. The two surveyed each other, taking a moment to assess the situation. Iris clenched her teeth to stop them from chattering, hands stiff by her side to keep them still. Calm. DOWN.
She took a couple of deep breaths before returning the human’s gaze.
The human was rather short, about half the height of her Dad (she felt a pang of sorrow at that, but it had a thicker build with broader shoulders and waist.
Suddenly the human moved, walking closer with eyes wide with wonder. Iris jumped back, fur puffed up in surprise and fear. The human didn't seem to notice as it continued it’s thorough examination of her.
"If you don’t mind, can I ask what you are? You're like no Pokémon I’ve ever seen, and I've seen a bunch before!”
“U-uhm, I don’t… really feel ok with that…”
Iris stammered out hee response, still wary of this new presence. As curious as she was, she wasn’t about to give the human any reason to hurt her.
“That’s ok! You don’t need to answer if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.”
The human stuck out it’s hand in some strange gesture Iris didn’t know.
“I’m Rose! Nice to meet you.”
Iris stared at the hand for a moment before taking another cautious step back.
“Uh… Iris. Nice to… meet you too?”

Watch Pokemon Legends A-Z eventually disprove everything I say here but oh well, thought I'd share anyway- POKEMON LORE THEORY/HEADCANON!!
Spoilers? Not really, only if you really want to exclusively discover historical events lore FROM within the games.. Which this applies to mainly gen 6-8.. There's a cornflake of gen 9 lore.
30,000 years ago:
Eternatus comes down on the Crown Tundra in Galar, inside a meteor. Eternatus is weak and stays there slumbering. Not much changes about Galar except obviously the crater made by it.
Unspecified time between 30,000 & 3,000 years: A war is waged in the Kalos Region
3,000 years ago:
AZ's Floette is killed in the war in the Kalos region
AZ uses special crystals(tera crystals) from the Paldea region to construct the ultimate weapon, infused with the life force of other pokemon to power it and bring his Floette back to life and granting himself immortality in the process.. but then wanted revenge on those who killed his floette.
the ultimate weapon is detonated for destruction this time, wiping out ANYTHING in its radius, sending shock waves through the earth- massive earthquakes and access amounts of energy released across the land
this energy is passed all the way across the sea and into Galar, being immediately absorbed by the sleeping Eternatus
this causes Eternatus to awaken and go haywire. It starts releasing the newly obtained energy into the land, causing wild Pokemon to grow huge & powerful (dynamax), this is the darkest day
Debris(Pieces of the Ultimate Weapon) are scattered across Kalos, these will become Mega-stones, they are a lot like the Tera crystals of Paldea but infused with power from the pokemon sacrificed for it.
2 young warriors of Galar who are partners to young Zacian & Zamazenta, seek to stop the Darkest Day to end its destruction as giant Pokemon graze their kingdom- with their sword & shield, Zamazenta & Zacian are able to negate Eternatus' power to defeat it, sending it back to its slumber in the the crater from where it came.
these 2 warriors are crowned kings for their heroic actions
However this does not remove the energy released into the earth, and Galar now has its phenomenon that'll become known as "dynamax power". Energy from the ultimate weapon that had been corrupted by Eternatus.
the war in Kalos is promptly ended because almost everything is DEAD
Unspecified time after this:
People of Galar will learn control & even use this energy for their own. Keeping the energy more stable by letting it be absorbed for use as electricity. Although this does very slowly burn away the energy.. and one day it could still run out
AZ's brother buries the ultimate weapon to prevent it from being used again
these strange powerful stones scattered across Kalos will be discovered and polished, then used by trainers in battle as "mega evolution". And slowly start being distributed to other regions(like Hoenn) for use..
And that's my take! The thing with tera crystals being used to make the ultimate weapon might seem like a reach and yeah- it is, I just REALLY wanted all three of these elements to be related in some way and initially was gonna say the crater in Paldea was somehow caused by the weapon but then discovered I guess the crater was canonically created MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO so.. decided to go the other way. And the thing with eternatus absorbing the energy is just cuz nothing I found explicitly says Eternatus had caused dynamax energy in the region since it first fell on Earth..
Btw Eternatus is also an ultra-beast, but z-crystals don't have any relation to these events as they are canonically shards from Necrozma.
There's probably a million little plot-holes to this but ya know.. it's all in good fun :D I think it's neat anyway.

So introducing some lore about shiny pokemon for my pokeworld that I'm building! Information under readmore if you're interested!
Tumblr media
In the very beginning the very first shiny mew was Shim, named such for his unusual coat color that shimmered moreso compared to the other mews that had been made. He created the first alternative palette pokemon who are known as Shimmers (colors based off of older game shinies). Identified by the shimmering of light off their coats/furs/scales and often different colors to modern shinies. These variants are rarer than shinies as they are naturally out competed by the modern day shinies.
Shimmer pokemon as a concept the name use of older game shinies for colors and the shimmer effects to represent the shininess all together is not a free to use concept, please don't take the term shimmer and use it in this exact way, currently only one person has my direct permission to use this exact concept in their works.
When Shim rebirthed Shine was born and with that the modern day shiny colors and the distinctive diamond shine shape that Shinies got their name from. The Shiny gene near replaced the Shimmer gene entirely making it the dominant expressed gene for alternative colors. (Shines design was made by @blues-sues they've become a canon design to the blog yoink)
Shines rebirth created Speckle, who later renamed herself to Angel, Sparkles were created, these pokemon gained extra shining effects resulting in their more sparkly appearance, with Angel also came the genetic ability for half/partial shinies. Sparkles are characterised as pokemon that either partly express shiny traits via spots patches gradients ect or have extra shine affects to them.
From Angel came Little Blue who later becomes Vector, with her creation would've came Glistens, these shiny variants would've been characterised by their colors being somewhat old shiny color leaning but not always but more specifically their coats/fur/scales ect getting a more polished crystallized jewel like shine to them as though terastelized and shining in their eyes they glisten like precious gemstones.
Included is a sort of genetics dominance chart for the different variants of these shining genes
Tumblr media
Generally Shiny wins out with Glistens and Shimmers cancelling each other out. This does not mean breeding two shinies guarantees a shiny pokemon this is just to demonstrate which one you're more likely to get when breeding different shining pokemon.
Due to the Sparkle gene being characterised with either partial shiny expression or just extra sparkle in the fur/coat/scales that gives this gene the unique ability to combine with the glisten and shimmer gene, Shiny gene would just overwhelm it entirely.
Shimmering Sparkles are pokemon that either; express partial shimmer gene and extra shine
Shimmer colors with extra sparkle on top of shimmering
Or lastly the expression of Shimmer gene and shiny gene at the same time, common in fusions if one half carries shimmer gene and the other half a shiny gene and they both express being double colored puts them under the Sparkle categorisation and being that the shimmer gene is older it is the dominant descriptive trait leading to Shimmering Sparkles
@blastedoffagain would have an example of a Shimmering Sparkle with their Vaporeon Dragonpult mix, the Vaporeon half expresses the shimmer gene while the dragapult size expresses the shiny gene
Glistening Sparkle pokemon have yet to be seen but any partial expression of Glisten gene would count as such similar with the Shimmer Sparkles, same for if part of a fusion expressed Glisten traits while the other half expressed a different color shiny or not. Extra sparkles are likely too different to see on a Glisten.

🔥 for pokemon. whatever aspect you like :]
my first mainline pokemon game was silver version in 2001. i've replayed hgss at least 5 times, and gsc at least 30. though i have a deep nostalgic pit in my heart, i feel like i'm qualified to say johto is overrated. the game's poorly balanced, the region's bland, what little story it bothers to tell drops the ball before even really rolling it. the pokemon are visually, conceptually, and mechanically underwhelming. there's a few quite charming little gimmicks & character moments that never actually amount to much. kanto is a mindless slog, and shouldda had an on-rails story to make progression feel worthwhile. (or shouldda been cut, to clear up time & resources for polishing johto.)
though hgss is a sweet love letter to the original games, jam-packed with cute features, something indescribable about it always feels very slow and tedious to me, so i always end up replaying crystal instead. shame they had the chance to fix the level balancing problem, and for some reason chose not to. johto's a land of occasionally immaculate vibes, endearingly clunky charm, and forever half-baked execution. despite all this, i'm certain i'll be crawling back to it the next time i get wistful, or the next time a neat lookin rom hack drops. it's the spectacularly mid classic comfort of campbell's soup i eat when it's cold outside, and that's okay.
the best gen 2 pokemon game is Stadium 2. (followed by Polished Crystal, a rom hack i highly recommend 🤐)

hows your day going!! What's your least favorite mainline pokemone game or least favorite rival??
> It's been rough lately, but today's been slightly better, thank you! I hope you're doing well too!
> I've played only gen IV-IX mainline games, so I can't say anything for gen I-III (would like to try out Emerald and Crystal, as soon as I get my hands on a very real copy of both on my very real Game Boys). Kind of a controversial opinion, but I've always struggled completing original Diamond and Pearl... I've always found them boring... Also the layout of the region kind of bothers me for some reason? Yet again, I'm talking about the originals, I've never played Platinum (again, as soon as I get a *cough* copy — I look forward to it since it's the polished version!)
> Less controversial opinion: rival Calem/Serena, Shauna, Trevor and Tierno are so underutilised and flat in the games, it makes me sad :(
