I got a Shiny Oshawott in Blueberry Academy's Polar Biome! Also plan to keep him as an Oshawott. 🎀

The little guy's name is Shinichi, who is an Oshawott OC I plan to draw and showcase again. His fullname is Shinichi Kurusu the Oshawott! 💧

Fun Fact: My first ever Shiny Pokemon was an Shiny Oshawott in Pokemon White, which is my very first Pokemon Game. 🎀

I was 10-years old at the time and I would usually make a New Game for fun, and unfortunately didn't know how rare Shiny Pokemon are (especially Shiny Starter Pokemon) back then. 🌊

But luckily in the recent years I got a bunch of Shiny Oshawotts (mainly Pokemon Go and Legends Arceus), with Shinichi being the first Shiny Oshawott for Pokemon Violet! 🌟

are shinies safe in the wild? i'm sure being a different color would be bad for camouflage.

yeah shiny pokémon tend to have a much higher mortality rate. not so much the color difference, more often the sparkle they give off. plus sometimes people poach them for food. i don't even think they taste any different

I have a weird hobby I wanna share because why the hell not? I shiny hunt, but not traditionally. See, I know I can't take care of a ranch's worth of sparkly, little bastards. Even if I could, I'd look like one of those rich, movie villains with a menagerie of pokemon that're miserable and starving.

So I know you're wondering, what do I do, then? Just take pictures, basically. I'm often called a weirdo because there's a room in my house that's covered wall to wall in shiny pokemon I've encountered over the years, but to be honest it's better than catching a pokemon I'm not gonna keep.

Tho once in a while, I get some asshole or total nutcase that tells me I'm not a real hunter because I don't catch em. Okay, bud.

not weird at all. my sister does that for work, actually- she's a photographer, and her current job is recording instances of shiny pokemon in the wild and bringing back pictures and videos of their behavior for the team that is researching them. personally, i think taking pictures of pokemon is a great way to interact with wildlife without disturbing it, and if you don't plan on keeping a pokemon, it's far better to leave it in the wild instead of stressing it out and possibly habituating it.

i'm sorry you've got people in the community who treat you as lesser-than for not keeping a live collection of shinies. i have a lot more respect for shiny hunters who search responsibly for shinies than for those who do things like excessive breeding or mass-battling a population. there's always someone in every group i've joined who acts that way. thankfully, i do think ecological awareness is rising in the shiny hunting community, and most hunters i've met lately are more like you.

I've had a shiny Swellow for years -- I caught her in the wild and love her a lot, but would it be better to release her so she can breed with other wild Pokemon? I feel like increasing the shiny population in the wild is a better option than trying to breed them in captivity.

absolutely not. there's a Reason shiny pokémon are so uncommon in the wild. not only is the mutation INSANELY rare (and cannot even be passed down via heritage), but they are also just statistically less likely to survive. their glossy/different coloration makes them MUCH easier to spot and it doesn't usually assist their breeding chances. there's no reason to try and """increase wild shiny population"""
