Capturing the ambience of Portal Runner (2001)

This Army Men spin-off shipped with intact debug tooling. We'll be running the game via the PCSX2 emulator.

Activating debug tools

The game has a couple of debug menus: top-level and in-game. The top-level one offers level select, while the in-game one offers camera and rendering controls.

To activate this, we need to set up the cheats discovered on TCRF. You can convert those cheats to a PNACH file understood by PCSX2 using PCSX2CE and a CRC of 101E8C43. Once we have a cheat file ready, we must activate its memory modifications in PCSX2.

These cheats allows to us load into the top-level menu by holding start, and toggle in-game menu by pressing L3/R3. The in-game menu also has an option for visiting the top-level one.

Capturing footage

Once you load into the level of your choice, open the debug menu and set the FoV to ~60 and aspect ratio to 1.77 for a 16:9 display.

Afterwards, set Free camera mode inside the camera menu.

In this mode, the D-pad pans the camera by default. Hold the R1 while pressing the D-pad to rotate. Hold R2 to reduce the camera's movement speed. Use L1/L2 to raise or lower the camera.

PCSX2 patches

PCSX2 ships with widescreen and framerate patches for this game. You can enable 60fps if you chose, but you should probably disable the widescreen as we're already solving that via the in-game debug menu.

Disabling the HUD

We can use PCSX2's texture loading capability to replace the UI textures with transparent versions of themselves.

This technique won't work for the arrow type indicator, however, as it's seemingly implemented as rendered geometry. This element only disappears when the game is paused and during cutscenes, but not in such a way that we could get a no-HUD screenshot to overlay onto the relevant part of our video capture. Therefore the best I could do was creating my own overlay, drawing upon nearby pixels as inputs, using Photoshop's clone stamp tool.
