7/20/2024 prt 1

Now that I have answered all the questions we can move on to the second half of the year-end review. Oh, you thought I was done? Nope. For this diary entry, I decided to indulge a bit in my autism and discuss my fixation on the community my art senpai has accumulated. I was going to save this Wikipedia article for my memoir that would be published after my death, but I couldn't hold these thoughts in my noggin further. So consider this a taste. I will be discussing all the relevant people I've come across in this community and I will be giving my honest opinions. I will be as honest as I can though, I would never omit anything that was said to me in confidence. But if this section gets deleted it means I got in trouble for running my mouth. I will be referring to the relevant people with their usernames.

𝒯ℯ𝒶𝒸𝓊𝓅

Teacup is the art senpai I was referring to. She made a name for herself in the classic Cartoon Network community, specifically The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack. If you were interested in any of this it was difficult to miss her. What made her so known? Well, let's start by explaining my own history with her. I became aware of Teacup's existence probably as far back to when I was fourteen years old, a sheltered little girl's first few years of exploring the internet. Before the internet, my only form of entertainment was a cartoon network. So I used the internet to watch stuff like The Powerpuff Girls and so on. When I discovered Deviantart and how people made fanart of the shows I loved you know I was on that shit. The only sites that existed for me were DeviantArt and YouTube. Before Teacup I was a huge fan of Bleedman, the guy who makes these massive cartoon crossover fan comics. He was my other art senpai aside from this FioLee artist known as MizzChama. I would spend my free time reading Bleedman's comics on SNAFU. I really loved drawing his PPG OC Bell, I thought she was really pretty. Looking at Bleedman stuff on DA would eventually bring me to TeacupBallerina. Her art was recommended to me by the DA algorithm. I think I saw some OCs of her's that I thought were cute so I gave a looksee. To my surprise and slight shock, I was bombarded with AkuBloss, the romantic pairing of Aku from Samurai Jack and Blossom from The Powerpuff Girls. I was confused, I knew DeviantArt was weird but this was so random and specific. At the time, because of Bleedman, I shipped Grim and Mandy for a bit, so I wasn't disgusted by the ship. I just didn't get it. How would this pairing ever work? I wanted to understand more. Looking at the art, this wasn't some Thomas the Train sperg that mindlessly indulged by making receptive art. What I saw was an artist putting a lot of passion into their creation, even if it was seemingly weird and unorthodox. Little Sophie had to respect this person's drive and unapologetic love for something she knew normies wouldn't understand. I'd look through this artist's posts, and see her personality, and I decided I like her. I wouldn't end up following her and considering her an art senpai until later. Drawing anime and horror was my thing. Throughout the years I would get obsessed with one thing and move on to the next obsession while checking in on Teacup every so often. It took me a while to understand. In high school, I showed my friends that infamous AkuBloss comic where Blossom is pregnant and Aku is kinda yandere and shit (my friends would send unhinged shit to each other all the time) and my friends were like "bitch wtf is wrong with you." And I'm here like "Hmm maybe there's something there I wasn't seeing." along with thoughts of "why am I into this now." Sophie degeneracy arch foreshadowing. Anyway, I would end up following Teacup around the time she was further into World of Light. I would leave her a comment talking about how fantastic she replicated the art styles of both shows. She said thanks. At the time I was just really impressed with artists like Zone sama who could replicate art styles. I don't remember when but Teacup would follow me back on DA. I was excited but I kept it to myself and just thought that she was cool like that. So throughout college, I stalked her other social media accounts. I explored her Tumblr and saw some Aku posts, political posts, shit posts, and all kinds of stuff that gave me more of a clue about her. I discovered her streams too. It was around the time she still live-streamed regularly. This is where I got to hear her voice and she would interact with the members of her Discord. I wouldn't join right away because I thought it was an exclusive club. I would get into Your Boyfriend, and start an account on NSFW Twitter. By this time Teacup and I were mutuals on most platforms. I posted something degen and she was all like "that's hot." then I'm all like "omg my art senpai thinks my art is hot." And she was like "omg ur my art senpai."

There's been a lot of criticism of Klemper's portrayal. Many finding it making fun of disabled or the "weird" kids.

I want to keep his motive, wanting to make friends and expand on that. His whole life, he was ostracized for not fitting in due to his disability, and even now as a ghost is lonely. Many of the ghosts avoid him due to his ice powers and since most are from older times, don't understand how to really talk to him.

Klemper's a pretty cool guy, literally. He's very sweet and would love nothing more than someone to just chill and play with him in the snow. With that said due to his undersensitivity to snow and strong powers, most steer away from him, leaving him usually alone and get lost in his own Winter Wonderland. Because he didn't know for a while he was dead and how strong his powers can be, if not careful can easily cause an ice age.

When he meets Danny and gets better support, gets to know the other ghosts better and learns how to control his ice powers better, he's always happy to join in on stuff and see where his afterlife will take him, as long as he gets to do it with friends.

Personality

Sweet, compassionate, warm hearted, cheerful, playful, affectionate, socially akward, honest, starry eyed, loyal, trusting, perhaps way too trusting, timid, insecure, emotional, sensitive and tends to get lost in hid own world.

Is Neurodivergent. Autism♾️

Abilities- Cyrokinesis, can glide place to place, friendly, make and animate snow to his will, can produce a lot of snow and ice and shape it, especially in very low tempature conditions, undersensitivity to cold(can be an advantage and problem), can remove his limbs and body parts, welcoming personality, compassionate, great snow man maker and greater hugger.

Weaknesses- Has trouble controlling powers when emotionally distressed, panicking, tends to get lost in his own world, overly trusting, not good in hand to hand combat, not a good liar, can lose his parts unwillingly, doesn't do well under pressure, has trouble with social cues, reading people and communication, sensitive to things such as noises, brightness, etc, hypersensitivity to heat, will melt and lose his powers.

Makes snowman to keep him company. He's able to animate them and have them do what he wants but they don't have free will or any sentience. It's something he's sadly aware of hence why he's always looking for real friends.

Occam's razor is the principle that, of two explanations that account for all the facts, the simpler one is more likely to be correct.

this post is going to cover traits specific to the manga and the television drama, since those are the best adaptations to showcase L’s autism. THIS POST is required reading before you read anything i’m about to type, because it explains what kind of character niche L falls into--an unintentionally autistic coded character. i’ll talk more about that at the end.

i’m going to talk about manga L first, since he’s the original version after all. i’m going to go in order of physical traits, to behavioral, to his character writing. also, tumblr eats posts that have outside links, so i’m going to have my non-tumblr sources in a separate post, here.

anyways, more under the cut!

MANGA/ANIME:

sitting with his legs up and spine bent / sitting on the floor

this is such a big one and its extremely common in ppl with autism. sitting in chairs normally is uncomfortable to outright painful w many ppl with these disorders, myself included. L sitting like that (which, to recall, is a blatant homage to sherlock holmes, another character that is so blatantly autistic coded you can find absolutely ridiculous amounts of writing on the topic) and being like "I HAVE TO SIT LIKE THIS TO THINK PROPERLY" is so autistic. like sitting in a certain way to give you specific sensory stimulus/avoid distracting discomfort and pain is a thing. i found this post (1) written by an autistic person on the topic of sitting in chairs being uncomfortable, and it says as much:

“I suspect that seating discomfort is common in autism (though by no means limited to autistic people). Many of us, particularly as children, benefit greatly from chairs designed to be non-stationary: rocking chairs, “fidget” chairs, and so forth. These can improve focus, compensate for proprioceptive hypo-sensitivity, and alleviate restlessness. In short, many “attention issues” can be fixed simply by providing a little motion for the person sitting. Small change, huge results. That's what accommodations do at their best. They make (often minor) adjustments that have profound impacts.”

so when L says that sitting the way he does, for a specific sensory experience, improves his ability to think, it’s perfectly in line with this idea. Also it’s a good pressure stim.

standing with a slouch / shifting his weight around

to begin: yes! it’s very common for autistic people to stand or walk oddly for a number of different reasons, from physical comorbidity to other issues such as dyspraxia (see: movie L). From an article by YAI (2), an I/DD (intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) community program:

“Kyphosis (a curved spine), collapsed chest, dropped shoulders and even scoliosis are observed in many of our patients. These myriad of postural issues may result from reduced strength, decreased biomechanical stability, or from a sensory impairment, such as apraxia.

Depending on the scene, L has mild to severe kyphosis which is very common in autistic individuals. Other things mentioned in that article if you want to click on it is instability in standing, where you sort of shift your weight around a lot between your feet or rest all of your weight on one foot, which L is literally doing the first time we see all of him.

speaking with a monotone voice.

i obviously can’t show a picture for this one and it honestly depends on the voice actor you find for L, but in the anime in particular L has a very flat tone. a lot of this is bc he has a dry sense of humor but. just know that it’s very common for autistic people to have a flat affect (or go the other way into being too loud/emotive).

his eating habits.

a lot (a LOT) of autistic ppl myself included can only eat certain kinds of food for texture and flavor reasons. HOWEVER there’s a term in the autism community called “samefoods” which is really well put by tumblr users candidlyautistic and autism-asks:

“Samefoods or samefooding is a community word to describe the autistic trait of eating the same food over, and over and over . . . It is part sensory, part routine driven in most cases. A lot of times we samefood because we need that particular mouthfeel / texture / taste, and a lot of times even after that need passes, it turns into a need for routine until you actively dislike that food again.”

“Samefooding on the other hand is closer to a special interest. When I have a samefood (chocolate ice cream, currently), I really, really want that food. I could eat that food endlessly and not get tired of it. I will get upset if I’m not able to have the food in a day. For me, it usually is kind of routine based as well. For instance, with my current samefood, I have some in the evenings and it’s become part of how I wind down from my day.”

we don’t know exactly why L specifically desires sweet food or if he considers it part of his routine, but what we do know is that he really wants to eat sweet food and avoids eating anything other than sweet food, so it could either be that he’s a picky eater and can’t handle savory or he’s samefooding on sweets!

wearing the same clothes

L wears the same clothes every single day. It’s also worth noting that what he does wear is baggy, too-big clothing, the kind that wouldn’t be tight and uncomfortable. once again, sensory issues are a huge thing for autistic individuals. one of my favorite aspects is that in no adaptation does he wear socks. even L wears shoes, he wears them like slippers, not putting them on all the way. people comment that he seems like he’s poor, but we know for a fact that he’s very rich and that wearing these clothes is a personal choice he made.

not caring for himself/outsourcing his self-care

i don’t think one day is exactly canon, rather it’s an exaggeration of what might actually happen--i.e. L doesn’t have a huge closet full of the same outfit, but he does have several versions of the same outfit on rotation; L doesn’t use a human washing machine, but Watari might help him/encourage him to bathe regularly. One Day is a parody comic, but it was made by the creators for a reason and that reason is that L pretty obviously relies on a caretaker (Watari) for his personal needs. Watari, in the manga proper, cooks and cleans and does most things for L. we’ll come back to this topic when we get to the drama though.

doing stimming behaviors

if you don’t know what stimming is, it refers to self-stimulating behaviors, usually involving repetitive movements or sounds. everyone stims to some extent, but in autism it tends to be more obvious, go on for longer, and sometimes be more disruptive to others. it’s often used to help deal with sensory overload, or used to express feelings--think of an autistic person being happy and flapping their hands in the air.

there are a LOT of instances of L displaying stimming behavior, from stacking his food or things on his desk, to spinning in his chair, to biting his fingers/using them to press on his lips, to wriggling and tapping his toes. here are some specific instances:

there are a lot more. i’ll talk about more when we get to dramaverse, but if you rewatch/reread death note it’s definitely worth noting whenever L does something like this!

detective work as a special interest

ok, first and foremost i want to establish what a special interest is. Tumblr user cartoon has my favorite explanation of what a special interest is that i’ve seen to date:

“To have a deep, intense, passionate and incredibly focused / narrowed interest in a certain area of study, subject, topic or thing - to the exclusion of other interests. This interest is something that exists for the long-term, most often lasting for multiple months, years, or even you’re entire life “

L says that he only does detective work because it’s a hobby, and he finds it entertaining. We’ve also seen that he’s been at it for quite some time--if you take side content (the wammy’s house comic, LABB) seriously, then he’s been at it since childhood, with unwavering interest. it definitely comes across to me as L having a special interest in detective work, rather than it just being a normal hobby or a job for him, especially since he says it isn’t out of any moral obligation.

germaphobia

Germaphobia is very common for individuals with autism. a lot of the time it’s actually sensory issues associated with “dirty” things, and a lot of the time it’s because features of OCD are heavily comorbid with autism, including contamination OCD and such fears. regardless of the reason, though, L’s aversion to touching Bad Things is a very autistic behavior, and so is his resulting quirk that he tends to hold things in a very odd manner!

muted emotional expression

this is getting more into L’s character, but L tends to feel and express emotions in a very muted way. not to say he doesn’t have them, but for instance in the example above, L doesn’t have a solid grasp on what exactly he’s feeling. he thinks he might be acting irrationally and overemotionally because he logically should be afraid, but he isn’t sure, and none of these emotions present themselves visibly.

i’ve also seen it said that Ukita’s death is another good example of his muted response to emotion--he tells Aizawa to stay rational and his voice doesn’t waver as he tells him as much, but he holds himself tightly. for someone with poor emotional competence, these physical signs of distress can be hard to read in oneself, but Aizawa (a man who is extremely in-tune with his emotions) can tell immediately.

high logic, low empathy

L is also a character who, like many autistic people, lacks a certain degree of empathy. it’s not that he doesn’t have any, but it’s limited enough--and he values logic over it enough--that he’s willing to make extreme decisions and take a “ends justify the means” approach (such as using people as bait.) in the example above, L takes a moment to work through what it must actually feel like, which rings as very autistic.

bluntness/not caring about social convention

there are so many examples of this i honestly could list them all day, but L is a character who is very to-the-point and doesn’t care about mincing his words. he can be outright rude to the people around him, especially if he considers them not worth basic courtesy. see: Matsuda.

DRAMAVERSE

if you all knew me you should have known this section is inevitable. i’m not going to talk about every single adaptation because i do not have the time and the only other adaptation that is meaningful in that regard is the movieverse (i am fairly certain that movie L is dyspraxic) but on account of the fact that i don’t care about them i won’t subject you all to them here.

anyway, drama L shows much the same traits as animanga L above (they are, after all, technically the same character) but he displays them in different ways.

he has a much more advanced degree of germaphobia, with Watari saying he’s sensitive to outside air and spraying everyone who enters his space with disinfectant, but not making them wash their hands or anything like that, so we can kind of tell that his issues are more rooted, again, in a fear of germs rather than any actual medical issue. he wants to feel as though he is clean, not necessarily actually be clean. this is very common in contamination OCD, which has a high comorbidity with autism. (my girlfriend has a very good headcanon post about drama L and OCD that isn’t so much analysis than just plain fun, but it’s worth a read!)

he stims, but he has a different array of stims than animanga L--he chews on his jelly pouch bottles,

he tosses it between his hands,

he kicks his feet,

and he bounces in his chair.

he still sits in an unconventional manner. he still samefoods, this time even more exclusively--he only eats Lucky Charge jelly pouches and nutritional bars. Watari onscreen puts his shirts on for him, as well as cooking, cleaning, and mending his clothes for him.

however, there are a few traits that are drama-exclusive that i think really add to an analysis of his autism!

social scripting

social scripting and echolalic scripting are both commonly described as “scripting,” but are very different! echolalic scripting is like echolalia, but echolalic scripting is the recitation of longer passages of dialogue from things the individual has heard before. but social scripting is when you memorize common conversations so you can rattle it off without worrying too much! this can be very handy, such as exchanging basic pleasantries or ordering food, but it can also backfire if someone responds in a way your script’s not set up for. you can find more information on the difference in this video (3).

now, this relates to L in that there are two separate scenes where L says the same thing, rather inappropriately:

L: When I consider Kira’s personality, could it be that the strong-willed daughter is Kira? Or could that sweet-looking son of yours surprise us by proving to be him? You never know what humans are hiding beneath the surface... Soichiro: Enough. L: Sorry. It was just a joke.

-- Episode 2

L: Light-kun. Oh, I’m sorry... If I called you “Yagami-san,” it would be the same as what I call your father. Light: That’s okay. Call me whatever you want. L: Then what about Kira? (silence) L: It's a joke.

-- Episode 4

one could say that L just has a terrible sense of humor--and, of course, having a poor grasp of humor is common with autistic individuals--but the fact that he says nearly the same thing as a defense twice makes me feel as though he has it rehearsed as a defense when people react poorly to things he’s said, which happens often.

mirroring and echolalia

echolalia was briefly covered in the previous example, but for those unaware, via wikipedia (4):

Echolalia is the unsolicited repetition of vocalizations made by another person (when repeated by the same person, it is called palilalia). In its profound form it is automatic and effortless.

mirroring, on the other hand, is explained as such, also via wikipedia (5):

Mirroring is the behavior in which one person unconsciously imitates the gesture, speech pattern, or attitude of another. Mirroring often occurs in social situations, particularly in the company of close friends or family. The concept often affects other individuals' notions about the individual that is exhibiting mirroring behaviors, which can lead to the individual building rapport with others.

both of these are very common in autism, and they’re exemplified while L’s character is established watching his favorite TV show, Owarai Paradise. On one occasion, he’s watching the show and this dialogue happens:

Hiroshi: Despite never telling her how I felt, I still got dumped. I am Hiroshi. Watari: Who was this one again? L: He is Hiroshi. Hiroshi: I am Hiroshi. I am Hiroshi.

-- Episode 2

it’s important to note that in Japanese, “He is Hiroshi” and “I am Hiroshi” are said, at least in this instance, exactly the same, so L is echoing precisely what he’s heard.

On another occasion, L is again watching the show with a glass of wine (seemingly acquired simply to imitate the characters onscreen, as he never drinks it) and when the characters onscreen toast their glasses, L does the same, mirroring them.

CONCLUSION

I linked a post at the very beginning of this analysis talking about how characters are unintentionally autistic coded, and it’s important to understand how this unintentional coding is different from a headcanon--i didn’t make up these traits. they aren’t something that only exist in my head that i ascribe to L for fun.

i made this analysis both because i wanted to share L’s autistic coding in one cohesive place, because plenty of people have made lists before, but none that i could find that included so many examples with images and explanations--and i also made it because of the old ryuzaki persona “theory.”

for those unaware, the ryuzaki persona headcanon suggests that L faked all of these traits in order to make people uncomfortable, to put them off-guard and better mask his identity. i’ve seen posts about people claiming that nobody could actually behave in these ways, that L would surely be unhappy and uncomfortable sitting like that, or eating like that, or engaging in any of these behaviors. I’ve seen some people outright say that L isn’t autistic, but his persona is--that is, he’s pretending to be autistic.

i named this essay “occam’s razor” because, to me, L being autistic is the simplest answer to account for all of these traits. claiming that an autistic coded character is faking it is ableist and it just doesn’t make sense with anything else we know about his character.

And now, some Unpopular Opinions!

Because at this point, why the hell not?

Iron Man was better than The Dark Knight

I am in no way, shape, or form suggesting that The Dark Knight is a bad movie. Far from it, in fact. It’s a damn good movie with some fantastic performances, a gripping story, and some of the best written characters and dialogue in the history of movie making. So is Iron Man the better movie? For one, it’s not so stuck up its’ own ass about its’ message. The Dark Knight is a lot of things and one of them is pretentious as fuck, come off as less of a love letter to Batman and more of a method of the director Chris Nolan showing how much he has nothing but contempt for superheroes and comic books in general. Iron Man, in contrast, embraces it and has fun with the idea of a guy who builds a mech suit and fights bad guys. There’s also the question of influence, and that right there is no contest. The Dark Knight influenced Batman; Iron Man influenced the entire movie industry.

Final Fantasy XV was a massive disappointment

I kind of feel bad for dunking on this game considering they just cancelled the last of the DLC. Then again the last of the DLC was going to expand on Lady “Show Up and Blow Up” Lunafreya and Aranea “I’m here and now I’m not” Highwind’s stories and now we’re not getting them and I’m still bitter as fuck for the director’s pathetic excuse for why a girl couldn’t attend the coming of age road trip, so all bet’s are off! Okay, the ladies getting shafted aside, there is a lot to like about Final Fantasy XV, but was it worth the tedious development time? No way in hell. The game looks good but like many open world games feels mostly lifeless and empty, and of the four main characters only one of them is likable and isn’t even playable in the game’s vanilla form. The story is a broken mess that requires other forms of media to fully grasp (dick fucking move there, Squeenix) and the summons coming at random times serves as more of an annoyance than anything, especially since they always seem to show up except during times when and where they’d be useful. It also doesn’t say good things about a company’s management when a game can sell millions of copies in record time as well as do gangbusters on downloadable content and then still manage to lose over 30 million dollars.

And for the record, let it be known that Noctis is far and away the whiniest and most emo protagonist in Final Fantasy history, which is saying something considering this is a series where one such protagonist’s entire character is being so jaded and world weary to the point that his name is the sound a crying baby makes, and he doesn’t whine and complain as much as Noctis does.

Just because you’re a cop or a soldier, that doesn’t automatically make you a good person

I’m in favor of police and law enforcement and even though I believe our military budget makes Caligula himself look frugal in comparison I do support our troops. Having said that, being a cop or a trooper doesn’t mean jack shit if the person under the uniform is a complete and utter scumbag, which happens more often than many care to admit. In fact some people, many people, become cops and soldiers not to protect and serve or out of a sense of honor and duty, but simply because they like making others miserable and want to do it for a living. There’s a reason songs about fighting the law and unflattering depictions of authority figures date back as far as authority figures have been a thing. Respect is earned, not given.

‘White Nationalist’ and ‘Nazi’ are the same things

Calling a Nazi a white nationalist is like calling somebody who abuses their spouse a rough lover. Stop beating around the bush and tell it like it is. Also, don’t debate Nazis, punch them. Punch them as hard as you fucking can. If they punch you back, punch them again, and again, and again until they either run away (which most of them do) or stop moving. Trust me, nobody is going to miss them. That goes double for the alt right. Oh, and speaking of which...

Far Cry 5 chickened out

As somebody who grew up in a dead gold mining community that was mostly Catholic, when the first trailer for Far Cry 5 came out I was stoked as hell for the chance to gun down religious fanatics and skinheads in a place in rural America that didn’t look all that different. Then the game came out and it was abundantly clear to anybody that something somewhere in the game was changed at the last minute. Some have argued that it was their intention from the get go, others claimed they didn’t want to alienate their core demographic. It doesn’t say nice things about your core demographic if you’re worried about depictions of white supremacist cultists scaring them away, but okay, fine. Then make a game that takes place during the decline of the Ku Klux Klan, or in a post World War II Europe where you hunt Nazi war criminals, or failing that make something akin to Black Dynamite or a wacky 70′s Kung Fu movie where everything is purposefully over the top and exaggerated, I don’t care! Climate change is real and coal can fuck off

Coal is dead. Let it lay down and rot. What, coal is your only source of income in the area you live in? Then move somewhere else! You think I would have left my hometown if there were any opportunities other than timber, fishing, and tourist traps? New She Ra is better than Old She Ra and 80′s cartoons in general

If you don’t like the new She Ra and prefer the old one, fine, you do you, but don’t act like the original is “So much better” because it isn’t at all. The villains were jokes, the animation was beyond cheap, the characters all looked the same, there were stupid talking animal sidekicks, and the story went nowhere really fucking fast outside of “Bad guys are doing bad guy stuff, our heroes must stop them” because they were commercials to sell toys. Nothing more, nothing less. If the new She Ra isn’t your bag then that’s all well and good, but don’t be a stupid asshole about it, talking about how it wasn’t featured at PowerCon like it’s a big fucking deal when only sad dorks like us give a shit about conventions, or whine about how you’re being oppressed and censored because a 16 year old isn’t rocking 44DD’s, or talk about “CalArts style” like that’s a real goddamn thing. Oh yeah, and speaking of which...

Shut the fuck up, no it isn’t. It’s a stupid, meaningless buzzword hurled at people who never fucking went to CalArts in the first place. If you’re perplexed as to why modern cartoons all look like Steven Universe, the simple fact is that cartoons are made predominantly for children and shows are made to be aesthetically pleasing to them. With shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Star vs the Forces of Evil, and Gravity Falls being soaring success stories while shows like Young Justice, new GI Joe, and 2011 Thundercats ambitious failures, it’s obvious that formal abstractionist non angularity is in while aspirational human physical fitness is out, and a big reason the latter was even a thing in the first place is because they were toy commercials first and there were only so many variations on plastic molds to form the fucking action figures and because it was the 80′s and Arnold was the biggest star at the time.

“Star Wars: the Last Jedi” is a good movie and fanboys can eat bantha poodoo

I’ve heard all the reasons for why The Last Jedi is a bad movie and they’re all either stupid nitpicky bullshit or meaningless fanboy gripes. I could write an entire essay debunking those reasons point for point, like how the reason Holdo didn’t tell Poe a damn thing because no admiral would ever a tell a lowly grunt anything about their plan, especially after being demoted for being a hotheaded little fuckup. Or that Rey being related to Obi Wan or any previous Star Wars character didn’t happen because that would have been stupid and the definition of predictable. Or that the reason Akbar didn’t do the suicide run is because he’s a meme that the general audience doesn’t give a shit about and that there’s no way in Hell that the Mouse would allow a character named “Akbar” to do a suicide run. Or that Kylo Ren not being an intimidating villain is the whole point and that you’re supposed to hate him because he’s a petulant Darth Vader wannabe and a snake to boot. Or that the effectiveness of said suicide run, where Snoke came from, or the state of the Resistance by the end of the movie, or that any other so called ‘plot hole’ doesn’t matter because this is a movie about space wizards for children and paying obsessive attention to meaningless and pedantic details is exactly how we end up with stupid subplots in the Beauty and the Beast remake and Metropolis and Gotham City being across the river from each other! But the biggest one is Luke wasn’t portrayed as some Jedi Clint Eastwood (why fanboys want that eludes me; the EU did that a few times and they were all terrible) and that him exiling himself doesn’t make any sense.

Sorry, but no, Luke running off to a far and unreachable island makes perfect sense. For one, it’s kind of a thing that disgraced Jedi do, and for two, Star Wars is a fairy tale in space. All of the characters draw inspiration from characters and archetypes from fairy tales and fables of old, and the one Luke Skywalker resembles most (largely by design) is King Arthur. Think about it. Common boy who doesn’t know who his real parents are, meets an old wizard, gets a legendary sword, discovers he’s of noble lineage, tags along with a few colorful characters, goes on a quest that’s bigger than him and the life he knew, hits a few bumps down the road, and then eventually he saves the kingdom by overthrowing his father who once was a great man and a hero but gave in to power and corruption and became a dark reflection of his former self.

You will never unsee that.

Oh yeah, and remember how things turned out for King Arthur in the end? He started a whole new kingdom, he had a few good years, he grew arrogant, things started to fall apart, and suddenly he and everything he worked to build up were undone overnight by a younger, more vindictive relative. Disgraced, Arthur was whisked away to an unreachable island deep rooted in his own legend and mythology where he remained until Britain had fallen to darkness and needed him again. Now of course Britain as we know it has yet to see such a thing (we’ll see how Brexit turns out) but Luke did exactly that. And no, sorry fanboys, but The Last Jedi wasn’t a failure in any sense of the word. It grossed over a billion dollars, received critical praise, the DVDs and BluRays sold like hotcakes, and was adored by kids, teenagers, and young adults, the primary audience that Star Wars is for in the first place. And I don’t give a shit what the audience score on RT says, because for one aggregate sites are a blight on film criticism and we went from this;

“Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad are AMAZING, Rotten Tomatoes is biased and paid off by Disney!”

To this...

“Star Wars: the Last Jedi is TERRIBLE, Rotten Tomatoes says so!”

In just over a year. To say nothing of the fact that what you’re currently saying about The Last Jedi was also said about The Empire Strikes, and like ‘Empire’ twenty years from now people will look back on the fanboy outrage and say “Wow, what a bunch of babies.” And before the inevitable response...

“But Solo bombed because of The Last Jedi!”

Nooooo, Solo bombed because it came out right between Infinity War and Deadpool 2, was rife with development issues since day one of production, it was aimed overwhelmingly at fanboys obsessed with Star Wars deep lore answering questions that the general audience doesn’t give a shit about, nobody was even interested in the thing until the Lego Movie guys were signed on for a hot second, moviegoers aren’t currently hurting for cocky space cowboys...

...and because of the simple fact that it’s a solo movie about Han Solo...and it’s not 1995 and Harrison Ford isn’t in it. See, fanboys don’t realize that just because nerd and geek bullshit is mainstream now doesn’t mean that everyone is now a fanboy deep rooted in everything from where the characters are from to where they’re going, because when people say “I love Star Wars and Han Solo is my favorite character” what the vast majority of them mean is “Those movies with the space wizards and the laser swords are a lot of fun and Harrison Ford is a great movie star.” That’s it. That’s extent of why people like Han Solo. Sad dorks like us may care about stuff like where and when he got the Falcon, how he met Chewie, where the dice came from and all of that and more, but the general audience just wants to see Harrison Ford do cool shit in space. That’s it. To say nothing of the fact that nobody was even interested in the spinoffs in the first place. When Disney announced that they were making episodes 7,8, and 9 everyone went “Oh Hell yes, sign me up!” Then when they followed up with that they were also making spinoff movies about stuff that happened off screen or between movies the same audience was like “Oh...well that’s neat, I guess.”

And no, that stupid fanboy boycott had nothing to do with. Even the dude who started that petition to strike TLJ from canon admitted that he was in a bad place and that he was being stupid and angry, and I can promise you that all the shrieking dorks on Youtube are the buzzing of flies to Disney. If that crowd had any box office and movie making decision influence whatsoever, the next spinoff we’d see a trailer for would be “My Twi’lek Waifu: a Star Wars Story.”

PewDiePie is the worst thing to happen to video games this side of the gaming crash of 83 and he needs to fuck off

Yes, you read that right, and I don’t say that lightly. All sorts of terrible things have happened in the gaming industry since the gaming crash of 83. The console wars, the Atari Jaguar, the Philips CDi, Jack Thompson, the death of the Dreamcast, WoW, an entire console generation packed to the gills with homogenous gray and brown shooters with protagonists who all looked the fucking same, GamerGate, microtransactions, DLC abuse, the death of Maxis, an increasingly toxic fandom, “women are too hard to animate,” the degradation of E3 from a showcase of the biggest and bestest in gaming to a corporately sponsored circlejerk of self congratulatory backslapping and so much, much more.

I don’t care how much PewDiePie gives to charity, or how many fans he has, or how many people think he’s just the greatest, because he’s not. He’s an embarrassing, stupid asshole who constantly gets busted for making stupid racist jokes and by extension making his fans and everyone who has even the vaguest ties to the word ‘gamer’ look like stupid, racist assholes. He’s a corporate ass sucking apologist who gives exposure to anti Semites and racist wastes of space to his audience of mostly 10 to 15 year old boys, and he’s more terminally obnoxious than an Adderall addicted Pomeranian.

The day he posted his first video of him overreacting to a jump scare while making loud screeching noises on top of edgy rape jokes was the day the progress of “gaming as an art form” was shot between the eyes, placed in a box that was then filled with concrete, and thrown into the ocean. He’s a dumbass man child that’s making all of us look bad and he needs to take his millions worth of corporate sponsorships and fuck off forever into some dark, lonely corner of the Internet where he’ll never be seen or heard from again until an inevitable meltdown that lands him on an episode of Down the Rabbit Hole.

As said before, for the month of April, for Autism Acceptance/Awareness month, I am hoping to draw and post art of fictional (mostly animated) characters who are headcannoned to be autistic or canonically autistic and explain why they made the list in my mind.

I understand that it might be controversial for some, who prefer to see those characters as caricatures and cartoon characters, and that’s fine. No one is forcing you to have these views. These points that I put about each character I talk about tend are commonly characteristics of autism and resonate with a lot of autistics, due to some of the behaviors and traits exhibited in the show/movie/comic, etc, even if the writers wrote them like that unintentionally.

Just to clarify, the list is in no particular order, and it's going to include both male and female characters (and some non binary ones) and one trait that I will NOT include is they’re wearing the same outfit. (I understand that a lot of autistics tend to wear the same outfit or the same kind often due to sensory issues with texture, but as far as animated characters are concerned, it’s a cartoon character trait so that that the character is recognizable). Also, if a character is of a different sexuality, this will not be included as a trait as it is a totally separate thing to the neurological condition (even though in a lot of studies, it's shown that autistic people are more likely to be homosexual/trans/non binary, etc, but sexuality doesn't equal autism. It’s more coincidental).

Without further ado, let’s get on:

1. SpongeBob SquarePants

I know what you’re thinking, How can a cartoon sea sponge who is meant to be portrayed as somewhat of an idiot and optimistic be autistic?

I understand all that, as he IS meant to be a cartoon character who simply has an optimistic view of the world, but here’s why I believe him to be autistic:

While he is relentlessly optimistic and social, he can also be very naïve, and he doesn't always see other’s true intentions, as shown with Plankton, Mr Krabs and Squidward, and in some cases, Patrick (in later seasons). Thankfully, this gets him out of trouble sometimes.

He also doesn't always take a hint that others might be annoyed by him and might want to be left alone.

Considering he is somewhat a young adult (he has a job, lives independently, and is learning to drive), while he does have adult interests, he also has some childish and unconventional ones, such as bubble blowing, collecting toys and going to the toy shop and superhero's.

Related to the above point, he can be seen as weird“ or “odd” by the rest of Bikini Bottom. Then again, Patrick gets the same treatment.

He is often eager to learn and it seems that he excels more in the theory aspect of driving than the physical aspect (which he fails numerous times)

Highly sensitive (cries a lot)

Distraught when something is not as expected in his routine (loosing his badge, Krusty Krab closing, not getting the job as manager, etc) and has somewhat of a rigid schedule.

He’s shown to be highly intelligent and some of his skills are near savant level.

He embraces his weirdness and doesn't give a shit as to what others think and is oblivious to comments made of him, although sometimes, he's not and often sensitive to criticism.

He is also very punctual, arriving on the dot, and is hyper focused when it comes to his job.

To hammer the point home, Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob) has said that the Sponge is “vaguely autistic” and that apparently, autistic kids are drawn to the character.

I think that all Aspies should aspire to be SpongeBob, honestly.

(Note: I’m aware I can’t personally directly send this to him, but I still felt like sharing this with you, my dear comrades, I was feeling really rubbish yesterday but after typing out all of this I felt a lot better, a lot of the thoughts in this letter are what has been buried under the subtext of some of my poems and that one writing piece I did, some of the topics discussed reference mental health, personal aspects of my life and spirituality so TRIGGER WARNING!..you may keep reading)

Dear Doctor Rik Mayall

Hello!,

I’m Kelsey, I’m a huge fan of your work, old and new, a 17 soon to be 18 year old from Northern Ireland I, unfortunately, wasn’t around to see your Bottom stage shows when they came to Belfast, I was too little at the time.

I did know some of your work though, that short-lived King Arthur cartoon was a show I’d frequently watch, and I remember when you’d voice the Andrex puppy and narrate who let the dogs out!

In later years I’d eventually watch that Young ones show you did, I fell in love with that show, your character too, that show helped me at a time after I finished secondary school when I was feeling really depressed because of drama going on with someone who used to be my so-called friend who I had learned later was manipulating me.

Your show made me realise a lot about myself and the world around me, as someone raised tory you helped me express the true socialist and anarchist views that I wanted to show, I’m now the me I always wanted to be,I’ve met a lot of my new mates the ones in my college and the ones off the internet because of you, because of either them and I mutually liking one of your shows or me introducing them to your shows and them enjoying it.

I used to study drama as you did, but then I had to study media instead, my dance instructor really tainted my confidence, however, I did get a good grade in LAMDA, the drama school that Nigel Planer and Peter Richardson went to, I just did the exam though,I still love drama and I write poetry (like your character did) and my own comedy monologues while it took time to realise I lowkey wanted to be a comedian as well as an actor and artist,but I used to think I wasn’t capable enough, but I’ve written 7 monologues since last summer up to now and I’m quite proud of my progress.

My media course is going well too, I’ve often referenced you in some of my sources for projects like my Moving Image class and one time we had to pitch a film idea and poster, so I chose that Drop Dead Fred film, because it’s one of my favourite films of all time and I felt like the only reason it didn’t get the proper praise it deserved at the time was due to bad marketing.

Outside of that, times have been less than stellar, a bloke last October manipulated me, I just wanted to be friends with him, but he ended up being very mentally abusive,I have Autism so sometimes I hyper fixate *gush* about my interests too intensely,and sometimes I overshare and make weird pop culture references only a few people get,it’s ok at times but other times it can weird people out and it makes me seem annoying to others when I don’t intend to be.

That and my childhood was quite lonely, and often I get traumatic flashbacks from old and modern incidents, and some of the flashbacks are made up and create “intrusive thoughts in my mind, I hate that, I haven’t had my other issues diagnosed, because I’m too busy to find therapy, my country has a backwards mental health system, and some people in my life don’t completely understand the issues I go through.

You and other icons in my life, help encourage me to keep going through the tough times and I’ve been able to help others going through similar problems too, I am so thankful for my friends and I’m so thankful for your presence in my life.

Barbara is a very lucky woman and so was Lise when you were with her and your work has heavily inspired my own.

I feel like whenever I’m acting or when I watch you acting, I see a spiritual philosophical wall beside us, I’ve read and watched all your interviews, most of your tv and filmography and your book is fantastic.

I feel like our personalities are similar, we are both kind, but cynical, we have our cold moments and times when we just want to be cuddly teddy bears, we love audiences but we’re also shy and sometimes timid,I can’t list all the traits here basically I can go from entranced and hyper-fixated to Pessimistic and Quiet and Timid to Mellow and Loud to dazed, relaxed and happy. Quite a mix of traits, in the past I was an ignorant coward, now though I’ve learned from that and I’ve grown a lot as a person literally and figuratively.

I have taken your mantras to heart, after I got kicked out of my old performing arts course I reenacted your Theatre monologue and posted it on the internet, It got lots of positive feedback not too long after that I continued the poetry,eventually the monologues and in between I got my first job as an assistant stage manager on a local theatre production of West Side Story.

I have a lot in common with both you and your characters,well mainly the positive traits, the negative traits I try to work on, even through our appearances, people have said I look like you, that has helped me accept myself, my identity and my own appearance, I’m far from a portrait but if I’m compared to you then I’m also very gorgeous,I also sort of scrapped through my GCSE’s, technically some of them were BTEC’s, they’re like extension course things, but then some of them I was average at anyway and the performing arts course didn’t let me show my full potential while there I mainly did villain and minor character roles. I shouldn’t be defined by a piece of paper, I should be defined by who I am, a wonderful, creative, smart, kind and beautiful person...like you.

Some of the “poems” I’ve made were tributes to you, and how while yes you had your flaws too, you to me are the perfect person, never before have I been so inspired or so connected to someone who wasn’t a Japanese cartoon (apologies, if that sounds odd, while I liked celebrities not many of them were relatable to me)

I even sometimes dream about you, I dream about being apart of the comic strip, I dream about performing alongside you, I dream about simply hanging out with you, going to pubs, Bowie concerts and that Groucho club you were banned from.

While there were some moments in my life, that I can’t remove or were learning curves for me, to have been around at the time, would’ve been interesting, yeah there’s the political rubbish but that hasn’t changed in the 2010s either, we still have Thatcher but her name is Teresa now, and a talking orange called Donald Trump is ruling America but he’s also literally just a white blonde Hitler.

I understand there are time rifts and time zone differences in the universes around us, but I do really wish I could’ve met you in person, sometimes the lucid dreams give a similar experience except you in those is like an animated hologram,I often try to “spiritually communicate” with you,sometimes it works other times I just end up talking to an imaginary clone of you,I can tell because they look like how you did in the 90s, and not the chill grey-haired grandpa you are now, sometimes I see your real self in those dreams, other times I only hear your voice.

I want to carry on the legacy, I don’t just want to spread my own ideas while teaching the world about your masterpieces, I want to spread the love, I want to remind the world to laugh at misery,I want to bring more light into where you left off,you aren’t dead,your just not physically with the world anymore, your mind, spirit and memory are still alive, in most people,your memory lives on

People still talk about you, I think about you, while the tories are still twats, the young revolution of the new generation is getting more attention.

I’m going to be one of the youths leading it, I’ll never lose my wisdom and you’ll always have a presence in my life and the world.

as long as I, your kids and all your fans try to retain your memory, you’ll never “die”.

After all, you're the Rik Mayall, are you going to let God prevent you from occasionally visiting earth, visiting your family and friends? Of course not, I’m sure they miss you very much, and I’m sure Ade is sorry about that drama he caused about the Bottom spin-off.

Behind the stage lights, Jacob Collins is a movie theatre employee who’s passionate about entertainment, writing, and being a good friend. In front of the stage lights, Super Jacob lights up in the form of a crime-fighting, comedic superhero ready to take on the toughest of villains in the name of love and community. These are two versions of the same East Tennessee man with autism eager to improve your day with a laugh and encourage you to be yourself.

“Oh yes, I am glad to be myself,” Jacob said. “I am glad to be the good way God made me. I like showing people some funny stuff. It makes me feel very proud.” Super Jacob first took the stage in 2019 at the Creative Theatre in Pigeon Forge where Jacob and his dad, Michael, had volunteered to usher before it closed down in 2020. But this superhero’s origin story goes several years back. While Jacob was in grade school, he began bringing home handwritten one-page papers covered with the adventures and heroics of a man dressed in a white karate gi and a brilliant blue cape with the letters SJ on his back. “It was about me. Saving a rose,” Jacob added. “I gained the upper hand to defeat the bad guy once and for all. He just does his thing. I plan on writing a lot more.”

He has written a lot more. There’s now a notebook full of Super Jacob stories with up to 183 seasons on paper. Jacob’s family has been excited about his storytelling since the beginning and are happy he’s found something he loves to do. “I mean it is pretty amazing because Jacob was non-verbal for so many years and he did a decade of speech therapy. I couldn’t have imagined back then what he would be today,” Michael said. “It's hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages of writing that he's done always by hand. It's just so cool to see what he's developed into and that he's found a creative outlet.”

It was Jacob’s dad and the community theatre that helped him turn the first season into a play. The Creative Theatre liked his work and offered their stage and production resources to bring the story to life. That’s when Michael and Jacob sat down together to type out the script. Several rehearsals, costume designs, and stage changes later, and Super Jacob Saves a Rose was performed in front of a full and captive audience with laughter and applause. In the video posted on Youtube, Jacob is seen smiling ear to ear.

Like most things, the pandemic put a pause on any additional performances. While the theatre was shut down, Jacob kept writing and went on to graduate from Sevier County High School in 2020. Because his graduation wasn’t what he hoped, Michael worked with an artist to do something special for him so that he could continue sharing his stories with the community. When Jacob opened up the gift, he held what was his Super Jacob Saves a Rose turned into a colorful comic book. He laughed in surprise and amazement as he looked through all the drawn images before looking up at Michael and saying, “Dad! Woah!” He was thrilled.

“It's kind of the gift that keeps on giving now. So, we've had multiple print runs on it and he hands them out to everybody he meets,” Michael explained. “I think it just brings joy to a lot of folks and it's a really neat thing.”

Jacob is ready to get back in front of the stage lights and says he’s already working on the sequel script for Super Jacob and the Impractical Joker. “We're trying to make it more special this time and also funny where it keeps people entertained,” he said.

When Jacob isn’t working on his script, he enjoys keeping up with the latest Monster Jam events, watching his favorite animated movies, and learning about the voice actors who perform in them. At his job at Forge Cinemas in Pigeon Forge, he likes to talk to customers about the voices behind their favorite characters while taking their tickets. He dreams of being a voice actor one day, maybe even as Super Jacob in cartoon form playing on the big movie screen. “You know, I would just encourage people to engage or hire persons with disabilities or autism,” Michael said. “Jacob is a great example of how much joy and passion they can bring to an organization.”

Another year of progress!

Oops...this is getting posted a little late because I forgot about it... XD

January: Nothing here because I wasn’t doing too good at the start of the year. Things happened...I lost some friends. I do have some hidden doodles from this month, but the only art thing I posted was a vent comic, and I REALLY didn’t want that to be in the art summary. On a positive note, I did manage to create a complex MMD model, custom physics and everything.

February: Another somewhat slow month. College ate up pretty much all of my time, because I wasn’t aware that I was taking too many classes. The piece from this month I did for my illustration class, in which we had to create a new design for a playing card.

March: So this was when I got into Bendy and the Ink Machine, and it quickly became my [autism] special interest. I drew a LOT of art for it within two months, both digitally and traditionally. I don’t do a lot of traditional inking stuff, but BATIM got me more into wanting to do it.

April: More BATIM stuff! This month I had my Animation 101 final due. The assignment was to make an animation that copies a certain animation style, so I went with a 30s look. You can see the animation here. I drew this poster a few weeks later because I got the idea from the animation.

May: I went to redraw some old af humanized Viva Pinata designs this month, cus I felt like rewatching the show. I was able to post a bit more art this month since the college semester was over, although most of it was just doodles. Other notable things I drew was my second BATIM contest entry, and the fake SU screenshot that people believed was real.

June: This was the month that I made Mimi, and my best friend Kurt established Raziel’s character. I watched Howl’s Moving Castle for the first time, because he said that Howl’s personality was similar to Raziel’s, and that’s where this month’s pic came from. Their relationship gives me life tbh.

July: Huge month for me and my art. I participated in the annual Artfight, which is basically a series of spontaneous art trades. People on the opposing team will draw your characters to “attack” your team, and you have to draw them a revenge attack in return. Last year, I drew 40 pieces, and I’m definitely going to do it again this year! Constant drawing massively improved my art.

August: This month was pretty slow. I began to focus on creating a more complex painting style, to better myself from last year. This painting I did is of my character, Mallory. At the end of the month I started attending community college, to transfer credits back to my main college later this year.

September: Another month where I didn’t post much. A lot of my time was spent focusing on college work. When I wasn’t doing that, I was either doodling (traditionally on paper, preparing for inktober), or playing Overwatch with my friends. I’d gotten the game when it first came out, played it for a bit, but then stopped for over a year after my main computer couldn’t handle it, so this month I finally started playing again.

October: Second biggest month for my art. I completed inktober, and I’m proud of myself for sticking through all the way! This piece however, was what I painted for Kurt’s birthday. It was the one single digital piece I did this month.

November: After inktober, I became lazy and pretty much just doodled, without fully finishing any pieces, which is why there is such few art in the last two months. This was one of the few things I did finish. I’m most likely going to draw these guys a bit more, since I really like the designs that I made.

December: I literally only posted twice this month. I was in a really bad slump for several weeks after the semester ended, so all I was doing was doodling and playing Overwatch. I didn’t have the energy to really finish anything until the end of the month. Marvin the Martian has been my favorite cartoon character of all time ever since I was a kid, and I’ve been trying to draw him ever since I first started art.
