I feel like I pretty regularly see Mash, or sometimes all media from a few decades ago, getting praised for having average-looking people on screen who are narratively treated as sexy

which is funny because it's not average looking people, including on Mash - it's average looking men

women in hollywood media of all decades have been like 99% model-esque, and I would not personally say it's any better to have average looking men constantly paired with bombshell model-esque women than to have model-esque men paired with model-esque women. it's not great that unrealistic beauty standards have expanded to encompass men in a lot of media (though certainly nowhere close to all of it), but i'm certainly not gonna say older media was better about this when at least in this day and age we very occasionally get shows like A League of their Own or (the adult timeline in) Yellowjackets starring women who look and are styled like people I occasionally see on the street

can't think of an old hollywood show that has room for an average looking female protagonist
