So curious from your reblog - how is smoking a metaphor for gay sex in your writing?
My brain kinda jumps through hoops and muddles lines so I end up connecting things which don't really have a connection, but I'll try and explain it the best I can. Sorry if I end up offending anyone or something, wasn't intended, etc.
I think it kinda links back to the idea of what is considered taboo and to opium dens in the 19th century? Like opium dens were generally in the bad parts of town and I associate that with gay sex mainly because of The Picture of Dorian Grey when he felt this really strong desire to go to the dens and just get high. I kind of read this as a metaphor for the desire for gay sex, particularly with the homoerotic tones of the book because it was this thing that was common — people knew about it — but in a lot of social circles it was frowned upon? It's been a while since I read Picture but theres a kind of vulgarity to Dorian's need for drugs which my brain connected with gay sex. Tabacco is obviously a drug and so I made the connection between one addiction and another and thus gay sex, etc.
Moving forward, the wide-spread smoking of the 80s and 90s and the fact that a lot of the stories I begin writing take place during this time, surrounding queer characters usually who do drugs or smoke, kinda just reinforces it. I kinda accidentally trained by own brain here and so it became a link in my brain. There's also the obvious link with cigarettes being called fags in the uk especially where most media I end up consuming is from.
There's an element of hedonism to smoking (this links more back into drugs, but smoking too) and the pursuit of pleasure which links back to Dionysus who was very queer in Greek mythos. Gay sex has also largely been perceived as an upper-class thing in the past simply because that's what we have sources on and the upper-class is notoriously hedonistic, particularly queer circles from the 19th century until WWII which means the two kind of again, connect in my brain. So I'm basically saying that historically, gay sex is hedonistic as is smoking because of surviving historical evidence and what we see portrayed in media. (Note: I'm saying 19th century because that's when being gay was actually outlawed in the uk and not just a dot point under sodomy and/or buggery.)
Finally, the intimacy of a cigarette is something that I don't think is unfamiliar, e.g. lighting a cigarette for someone (either by lighting two in your mouth at the same time or cupping someone else's hands to light, etc.), sharing a cigarette with someone or spending time while smoking together, and of course post-coital smoking. There's something very intimate and social about smoking (which is why I think it became so popular in the first place) and so I often use it as a moment of intimacy in my writing even between straight characters or characters who aren't necessarily romantically or sexually connected.
In a long winded way, what I'm trying to say is the cigarette and smoking represent desire and gay sex is repressed desire. So by using the cigarette and a conversation that borders on flirtatious, you can play around with sex without actually saying anything explicit and your audience can get a gist of this desire. I think I do this more often than not because I prefer to write historical fiction and so the characters are often placed in an environment where they can't voice or act as we would today while still remaining polite.
I probably explained it quite poorly but that's how my brain is making these connections and it's weird actually voicing something that usually I don't think twice about. Thanks for the ask! <33

Unfortunately all chatgpt is good for is interview/job application stuff which I think says a lot about the hiring process as a whole
#wrenfea.exe#as an actual artifical intelligence? no its horrible bc it really ISNT one#its a writing synthesizer it generates writing based on data searches and boundaries from training#thats what a neural network is its a very convoluted input-output sequence#it has no capacity to understand the meaning behind what it generates#it is simply generating the specific things that the user is looking for#the job interview process has become so robotic and automized that ai fits in perfectly#but employers HATE that people are turning to chatgpt for cover letters and interview answers#so it was fair for them to use filtering programs to accept/deny applications before it got in front of an actual human being#and its ok for them to use ai and pre-written formats to make job announcements descriptions and interview questions#but god forbid we are forced to use those exact same tools to get a humans attention so we can get a job and not starve#pushing aside the whole copyright debate on chatgpt and the environmental impact of its power usage btw#im soley analyzing how its become commonly utilized on both sides#by interviewer and interviewed#the mechanization of the whole process is now on both sides#it just seems very inhuman..#its also how some people have figured out how to somehow become employed multiple times by the same company due to lack of human oversight#and how automated theyve made their hiring process#probably should have made these tags into a separate reblog oops#also disclaimer do not cut and paste right into your application materials bc chatgpt often just lies#also many places now can tell you used chatgpt due to how similar its answers are#i only use it to make a template and see how things can be phrased to be more professional and buzzwordy#id never use it for something actually creative#and dear god do not write academic essays with it#i tried using it to supplement my own cover letter template but it was too robotic even for a cover letter#it is very good at accessing and summarizing publically available information#thats all it does not make sure the information is true or good

I was thinking about Eddie’s absent dad teaching him to Hotwire a car, and how Eddie’s been to War Zone before where they have everything you need to kill things with, and for some reason, for the first time in a YEAR i had the random thought of “what if Sam and Dean investigated the mysterious deaths in Hawkins” which turned into “what if there’s more monster hunters out there, aka Benny, aka Wayne (he’s certainly involved and knowledgeable) and Hopper is aware and refuses to talk to the two kids pretending to be FBI agents. He calls Owens just to be sure. Finds out who their dad is and tries to kick them out of Hawkins before Eddie can find out their in town

Few Against the Wind (DAI)
In honor of hitting 10 chapters the first long fic I’ve written in ages, I’m gonna actually make a post about it.
Few Against the Wind by KiaStirling on AO3
Fandom: Dragon Age Inquisition (drawing from other Dragon Age media as well in pieces, but not compliant to the full Dragon Age canon)
Main pairing: Solas/Original Inquisitor (Modern Character in Thedas) - slow burn (as in they’re barely even friends yet, expect no romantic overtures for a good while)
Important tags: Multiple PoVs, Asexuality, Religious stuff (author is not religious), Canon-typical violence, languages, Fade Buddies, Fantasy Racism
Summary: A woman falls from the sky just when she’s needed, what could it be but the work of the Maker? Why else should she speak in tongues but for being struck dumb by His grace?
She would disagree if anyone asked her. Could ask her. But by the time she has the words it’s too late, and June is heralded the Herald of Andraste. Burdened with knowledge and an entire system of faith carried on her shoulders that she holds no stock in, an earthling muddles her way through Thedas.
Current Length: 82k+ words/10 chapters (chapter length 5-10k words each) Projected Length: Unclear because scope creep.

Doing Art History: Architecture
Looking at this building, without prior knowledge of its purpose or background, what are the defining features and what do they tell us? What do you see and how do you interpret thus building? What gives you that impression?
Tumblr media
Aspects of this house that give it an air of grandeur, or rich quality, can be associated with the colour of it. White render is a difficult colour to upkeep on a house, and truthfully any colour is. This white render highlights how expensive this building is, as more effort in building highlights a performance of wealth.
Tumblr media
Hendrick Danckerts, View of the Queen's House and Greenwich Palace from One Tree Hill 1670s National Trust, Dyrham Park
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inigo Jones, Queens House, Greenwich,1616-1618, 1629-1635
Here, the historic image of the house (an archival image) helps us understand it’s birth and change through time. Blueprints and plans are especially helpful in dissecting a building, it’s like seeing the arteries, muscles, bone structure of the building. Stripped to its core, and revealing things we may not have known about it from the outside, or even inside the space we may have trouble mapping the areas that surround us. This also reveals degrees of privacy that are afforded inside the space, certain intimate, and hidden rooms.
The Axial symmetry, and the balustrade, suggest and define the grouping as classical.
Axial symmetry is symmetry around an axis; an object is axially symmetric if its appearance is unchanged if rotated around an axis.
Render and Tudor Brick Red have a long history, of one replacing the other and then the opposite begin more favourable. We will explore this further in the post, specifically around William Morris’ home. This transition through time and space, changes due to the address of person and society. We learn to read buildings by the buildings we’re exposed to.
KEY WORDS: (find more art key words here)
Architrave: In classic architecture, an architrave is the lintel or beam that rests on the capitals of columns. The 6term can also apply to all sides, including the vertical members, of a frame with mouldings around a door or window. Cornice – A cornice (from the Italian cornice meaning “ledge”) is generally any horizontal decorative moulding that crowns a building or furniture element – for example, the cornice over a door or window, around the top edge of a pedestal, or along the top of an interior wall.
Colonnade: row of columns generally supporting an entablature (row of horizontal moldings), used either as an independent feature (e.g., a covered walkway) or as part of a building (e.g., a porch or portico).
Loggia: (from the Italian word for 'lodge') is an outdoor corridor or gallery with a fully covered roof and an outer wall that is open to the elements. Traditionally, loggias either ran along the facade of a building or could exist as a stand-alone feature.
Balustrade: a railing supported by balusters, especially one forming an ornamental parapet to a balcony, bridge, or terrace.
Rustication: is a range of masonry techniques used in classical architecture giving visible surfaces a finish texture that contrasts with smooth, squared-block masonry called ashlar. The visible face of each individual block is cut back around the edges to make its size and placing very clear.
String Course: a horizontal band or course, as of stone, projecting beyond or flush with the face of a building, often molded and sometimes richly carved.
Tumblr media
Note: Classic buildings used rustication to mimic Italian/Roman architecture and to make the building seem heavier and in turn sturdier, especially with the use of horizontal weight and ground weight.
These qualities, of weight, and grounding, can lead to a certain building types like banks being associated classical building styles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Double Height Hall
The inside of the building, although harder to gauge through photos of the space, is a perfect 40 by 40 feet. Perfectly symmetrical. This space, with the balcony overlooking the space, is the welcome mingling area, as seen and deduced by the large window doors that lead and make the space brighter. This symmetry adds to the demonstration of wealth, as it demonstrates knowledge, power, and influence. Especially a knowledge of geometry. This perfect symmetry and flooring design out of marble echoes the Roman and Classical style.
Cultural Capital: wealthy enough to spend money on it all, and to demonstrate knowledge and new forms of understanding, creation, and interpretation. When it’s less accessible to people. Especially in denial of the everyday building and its meaning.
USE OF BUILDING:
How does architecture hint at behaviour? The way we should conduct ourselves and interact with the building and its space? With the Queens House, the door positions and stairs are leading us to the foyer, or socialising space that was just discussed.
This socialising space, has a balcony leading around the middle, suggesting voyeurism. To spectate and be spectated. This gallery, hints at being behaved, dressed up for the viewing pleasure of others.
Jones, the architect, was known for creating masks. Masks were a performance by aristocrats for other aristocrats, various people of court preforming for each other, with elaborate costumes and stories. Usually retelling or preforming some mythos or other.
Jones was not an architect as we know it. Keep in mind that architects were not trained due to it not being a profession, therefore no training was needed. He underwent travel to Italy and drew while being there in person, but also has background understanding of the people, and their buildings use. He is known to give buildings a dramatic flair.
Tumblr media
Tulip Staricase
A hint of his dramatic flair can be taken from this: Tulip Staircase. The first unsupported staircase in England, which was seen as a great feat of engineering. Contributing to the wealth and well of knowledge, the culture capital on display.
Tumblr media
Palladio, Palazzo Chiericati, begun 1547
This building, from the 16th century, was the direct inspiration for the Queens House. England was greatly drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean and signified the pre-birth of the classical antiquity. Of course, this villa palace design was adapted for England’s weather and climate.

William Morris: The Red House
The Red House, where William Morris lived and had designed for him by a young architect, displays a change in ideals and beliefs that is reflected from society in their architecture. Especially when an artist has a clear set of beliefs and wishes to embody them. Moreover, as the Arts and Crafts movement founder, he wished to separate himself from previous ideas, and this clearly comes through with the architecture.
The aforementioned Tudor Red Brick comes back, and the white render is all but abandoned in this building. Symmetry goes out the window, elements of gothic come into play, windows are miss matched and experimental, the steep roof gives this house a medieval quality. Morris was a great fan of the tales of King Arthur, round table, and his knights. (He even roleplayed as them with his art friends at his house).
Façade: a single elevation.
The Red House all but attempts to abandon this with its various elevations, recessions, and projections.
Fenestration: putting windows in certain places.
Architects guide us by manipulating light in indoor spaces, they guide our eyes and in turn lets our brain subconsciously know which way to go. The legibility of the windows helps us understand the interior address, design responds to function but also to aesthetic choice.
The Red House adopts a vernacular architecture style too, incorporating it into the gothic. Vernacular Architecture: a type of local or regional construction, using traditional materials and resources from the area where the building is located. For the people/belonging to the people. Return to nature. Eg. Barns and Farmhouses.
Tumblr media
Philip Webb and William Morris, The Red House, Bexleyheath, 1859-1860, Drawing Room
Morris aspired to have a community of Art Houses, even encouraged other artists to build their own houses in the area, people such as Rossetti. All that ended up happening was Rossetti had an affair with Morris’s wife. So….
Morris actually learned to weave himself and experimented with dyes to better understand and create his art.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Hill House: Art Nouveau
A house building upon Morris’ ideas. Historically the architect also did the interior design, if you observe the photo of the hallway, managing the volume and light, the architect controls where you should go/stay.
1902-04 Japan becomes more influential and inspires a large aspect of Art Nouveau. Mackintosh uses graphic pattern carpets/rugs to give direction on where moveable furniture should go.
Taking note of the previous buildings observed and presented in this post, look at the Hill House and consider how similar/different it is to the previous two.

pairing: kuroo tetsurou/reader wc: 860 tags: pre-relationship, fluff, high school setting (third year), bad flirting, kuroo is really trying
Tumblr media
"What'd you get for number 8?" Kuroo asks as he leans over you.
"Umm," you tilt your head and the golden light of the late afternoon sun flickers across your cheek. "I think I put down 1868 to 1912."
"Wait, seriously?" He claps his hand on his forehead. That's five questions he's probably got wrong now, not to mention he'd barely finished writing his second essay, meaning the maximum possible grade he could get is...
"I hate history," he grumbles, trying to redirect his train of thought from its depressing destination. "I'm never taking it in university."
You sigh ruefully. "I feel the same way about chemistry. The moment I walked out of yesterday's exam, every piece of knowledge about thermodynamics just—" you wave your hand near your temple, "—vanished."
"Bet you're glad I gave you my notes though, right?"
The train doors slide open and a crowd of students from another school shuffle in. His legs brush against yours as he tries to make more room around him.
"Only because I gave you my English notes," you counter dryly, moving your bookbag onto your lap as a freckled teen slides into the seat beside you. The small plastic Keroppi charm on its side swings erratically against your thigh.
"A more than fair trade," he reasons. "Especially since I was getting the highest mark in chem, while you were just below Takaichi in English."
"Takaichi's mom is from New Zealand," you reply, with a roll of your eyes. "He's been practically fluent since he was born. Plus, your handwriting sucks, so you get points taken off for that."
Kuroo snorts, but has no choice but to concede. After all, he can barely read his own notebooks from last semester.
He watches as the Tokyo cityscape rushes past, still thrumming with life, even as the sun dips low in the sky. It's hard to imagine an afternoon where he won't be packed into the subway at this time, with his loosened Nekoma uniform tie around his collar, and your occasional company on the afternoons he's able to catch you at the school entrance.
His short spell of mourning is interrupted by the announcer as the train pulls into a familiar station. You both exit onto the platform and make a beeline towards the escalators.
"I'm not staying in Tokyo," he says, as you're halfway through the barriers.
Keroppi's face smacks against your zipper as you pause. "Oh?"
"I'm going to Osaka," he continues, weaving through the crowd. You fall into step beside him and there's a second in which Kuroo thinks he's vastly overestimated his importance in your life.
"That's..." He watches as a crease forms between your brows. "I thought you were going to Tokodai."
"Nah," he says, re-adjusting the strap of his bag. "I think it'd be good to gain some independence, you know?"
"Right," you say, tucking your Suica away. The sound of the city fills in the quiet that follows as you step out of the station.
Truthfully, Kuroo had been hoping for something—anything—more than the pensive silence that now settles between the two of you as you both walk the last few blocks of your high school era. But as you round the corner, the weight of the moment only grows heavier.
From his peripheral vision, he can tell you're sulking with your lips turned down in a pout that you probably aren't even aware of. And even though you've never admitted it to anyone, he's not oblivious to the way you can barely hold his gaze for more than two seconds, or how you linger at the intersection when you part ways.
"You know," he says, as you both stand before a crosswalk, "this is probably your last chance."
Your eyes flash up at him.
"What do you mean?"
He straightens up.
"Your last chance to admit that you're in love with me," he blurts. He had meant for it to come out a bit smoother, maybe aiming for a kind of teasing tone, but something had gone horribly wrong in the last second. Embarrassingly, he feels his own cheeks grow hot at the boldness of his declaration.
The crosswalk indicator changes, but you're both frozen in place.
You blink, looking absolutely bewildered, and he begins to fear that he's broken you.
And then an odd sound emerges from your mouth—a short snicker, followed by an open burst of laughter. Your giggle seems to carry over the noise of the traffic around you and Kuroo tries very hard not to die right then and there.
Instead, he forces himself to laugh along. How could he have miscalculated so bad?
He's sure he'll remember this moment for many sleepless nights ahead.
"Don't worry," you say later with the world's most bemused smile, as you near his building. "It's not my last chance."
Kuroo works up the courage to look you in the eye.
"After all, I still have our graduation ceremony."

I started writing an essay in the tags of a post that was not strictly related to this topic but started getting me thinking and realized I should just. Make my own post about this because I have kind of been sitting on this frustration for a while? And mmmm idk how to feel about this.
(For the record, the post that inspired this is this one.)
I want to make it clear UPFRONT that I am not knocking on ANYONE's interpretations of NHS or about having gender headcanons about a character in general. I think people can headcanon NHS as whichever gender they like because those interpretations are fun and exciting and I like to read about those too.
What I have been getting progressively iffy on, and am not entirely clear on how to express until I came across the above post is the idea that 'NHS is femme-coded because he has femme-coded hobbies' or 'NHS is very gender/gender nonconforming because he likes to paint and doesn't like exercise/practice his saber' or 'NHS is not very masc in comparison to his brother and people in his society put him down/are irritated with him/react to him differently because his gender presentation is more femme.'
And I think what's always kind of boggled me about interpretations like these that I've mentioned above is because...
Hobbies like keeping birds* and painting and calligraphy and poetry** and being well dressed and fashionable*** were strongly masculine coded scholar gentry hobbies for bored rich men**** in historical China. People react to NHS they way they do in text (at least from what I can understand of the social norms of the MDZS jianghu) because NHS is determined to be a particularly foppish dandy and also yknow, actively wailing about his many problems.
So, I think the tldr of this is that: NHS can be interpreted as whatever gender people would like! But his society and his peers and the other characters are not reacting to him in a certain way because he's femme-coded, they're reacting to him that way because he's an irritating asshole and kind of foppish (affectionate)
*keeping birds (as pets and not like, just raptors for hunting) was a rich man's hobby in Ancient China from at least the Zhou dynasty, though which birds were popular as pets (everything from parrots to orioles) differed depending on the dynasty, but the Ming and Qing dynasties were extremely big on pet birds in rich people's houses in particular.
**it is unclear if NHS is particularly good at say, painting or calligraphy OR poetry but the point is that he appears to like these things
***men's fashion has been a wild beast throughout the ages both in the east and the west, and men have done things for fashion like wearing gaudy archer's rings to show off archery skills they didn't have, high heels, Song dynasty men wore flowers in their hair, and my own personal unfavorite: the Qing Dynasty queue.
****the four gentlemanly arts were for example: qin qi shu hua -- playing the qin (music), weiqi (Go if you want to use the Japanese name for the game), shu (calligraphy), and hua (painting). See brief wikipedia summary about the four arts here. There were different things also included in the education of an aristocratic gentleman in pre-imperial China but we have no time to delve into that in this post. HMU for more info if you want it because I love to talk about historical things.

The only light in the room was the one that came from the little lamp by your nightstand, barely enough to make certain corners of the bedroom visible enough. A soft but chill end-of-summer breath sneaked through the slightly open window, chilling the room down and forcing you to cover even better with your bed’s covers, since you had no energy to get up and close it.
The comforting covers’ weight wasn’t enough that day to make you feel anything different than the despair that had attacked your day since the moment you had woken up, and all you wanted was to fall asleep and face a new, better morning. But of course, nothing could go correctly, and your mind wouldn’t stop spinning and spiraling, keeping you wide awake instead of letting you drift into a sweet dream. Just great.
Billy hadn’t really noticed you were having a bad day, you had played it cool enough during your time together at school for his careful eye not to catch anything out of character, so his visit wasn’t really justified apart from wanting to get out of his house and possibly spend more time with you. When he saw that your window was open, he didn’t even try to warn you of his arrival, instead choosing to climb like he was already used to — he had probably used the door to your house once, that time he had come to check how you were feeling during that day you had skipped class because of being sick.
His eyes scanned the room from outside before he finally lifted himself with the help of his arms and slid into your bedroom, not used to so much darkness. Billy was surprised to not see you sitting on your desk, doing the English essay you had due tomorrow — he knew you hadn’t started because you had mentioned during lunch while you talked with Sidney. His eyebrows raised slightly when he saw you coddled on bed, covers and sheets almost completely covering your head.
“Everything alright, doll?”
His presence and voice triggered you so badly — given that, during your laments, you hadn’t heard him, especially considering how stealthy he always tried to be —, that you sat up, letting the covers fall around you as your heart beated desperately against your chest. You relaxed when you saw it was just Billy, but your heart continued to furiously attempt to break out from its place.
“Jesus, Billy, don’t ever scare me like that.” You muttered rather quickly, and then you let yourself go back to your previous position in bed. Billy smiled to himself as he made his way to your bed, slowly. You felt the mattress dip down when he sat by the end of it, and you sighed. “It’s just… a bad day.”
Billy looked at you from the corner of his eyes. “Hm?”
You gave in, letting your voice come out all muffled as you pressed your face against the pillow. “Terrible, actually.”
“Oh, no.” He chuckled, and you knew he wasn’t laughing at you when his weight shifted and he crawled to your side, mindful of not letting his boots touch your clean covers. When you moved your face away from the pillow, you saw his face just some inches away from yours, boring his eyes into yours. “What are we gonna do about that?”
A soft smile blossomed in your lips while his hand came up to cup your cheek, thumb lovingly brushing against your skin. “Come cuddle?” You whispered hopefully.
Billy just hummed, and the two seconds you had to wait for him to get rid of his boots was excruciating. Once he was barefoot, he slid next to you under the covers, his arms coming to surround you and press you closely against him — you wished more people knew this version of him. He looked gloomy and even scary from the outside, but his sweetness was betrayed by his eyes and his actions, not only with you, but with those he loved.
“There.” He said softly when your head came to rest in his chest. His heartbeat was slow, grounding, comforting, but most of all, familiar. “I missed you.”
You dismissed the fact you had seen each other throughout most of the whole day, and instead tried your best to lift your gaze to him. “Did you really?”
“Mhm.” Billy hummed softly, his fingers rubbing circles against your arm. “Thought about you the whole day. Do you wanna talk about it?”
“About what?”
“Your day?”
“Oh.” Your head instantly started to shake, a silent no that was quickly followed by, “Not really.”
You only knew he had acknowledged that because of the way he hummed, the vibrations reverberating against your head pressed to his chest. It was a warm feeling, fuzzy, that made you smile softly. You inhaled his scent slowly, letting his perfume surround you in that comfort your covers hadn’t been able to give you.
“You’re comfortable.” You muttered after some seconds, hiding your smile.
Billy couldn’t help but snort. “You’re not using me as a pillow.”
“I already am.”
“But you’re easy to shove.”
Laughter spilled from your mouth, and your arms came to surround his waist, under all the sheets covering you. “No!”
With a soft smile you didn’t see, Billy heard your laughter continue and eventually die, leaving just the trace of a genuine smile in your pretty face. His breath could have caught in his throat if this had been the first time he had ever seen you like this, but instead, he recognized the sight and the familiarity it brought him almost overwhelmed him.
“You laughed.” He said, after some minutes.
You frowned slightly. “Uh?”
“I made you laugh.” Billy pointed out, and you could hear the boyish grin in his lips. “Even when you were sulking so badly.”
“Get over it.” You said with a roll of your eyes, but not moving an inch from him. “It was a bad day, not a bad life.”
Billy just shook his head, his smile growing with every passing second, and holding you impossibly closer to him. You could get used to this, you thought, as you closed your eyes to focus on the heartbeat beating happily because of you. You’ve gotten used to this, you realized when Billy’s hand lifted your head with just tapping your chin, getting you to look at him with stars in your eyes that he certainly reciprocated.
“Kiss me?” You muttered, like asking for a promise.
He smiled, watching you for a few seconds before he finally leaned in, pressing a kiss to your lips. It was a promise.

The DFF Experience: A Dead Friend Forever Fandom Round Up (Part 1*)
Tumblr media
I had the wild idea of compiling links to all the various metas, theories, and other resources for DFF for everyone to use so that links and information were kind of all in one place. I dragged @shannankle along for the ride, and we combed through the tag to find all the things we could.
We most likely have missed something even though we tried to be as thorough as possible - if you think there is something we over looked that should be added let us know in the replies or the tags; if you write meta or other resource posts in the future, please tag us and we can add it to the post.
With that, please enjoy The DFF Experience!

Representation in Media
I'm starting pre-production on my next short film, and as I line up my research I find myself thinking back on a conversation I had with my students last year:
A group of students wanted to create a short film that took place in Turkey. Some students were vehemently opposed to the idea, as they did not have any teammates that could offer input regarding how accurately they portrayed Turkish culture. In an effort to mitigate this (and as part of an assignment where students were challenged to re-think the setting), some students took the core narrative and moved it to the United States; the main character, consequently, became white. In the end, the team decided to stick with Turkey as the setting & called on a cultural consultant from Turkey to continue with the original pitch.
Something similar happened the year before wherein a group set a story in Tibet. Worried they wouldn't accurately be able to portray a Tibetan character, the film's setting became a blend of cultures with hints of an identifiable origin, but nothing definitive.
I think about these two situations often, and as I work on my next film, the question keeps dancing through my mind:
Is it better to have a piece of media with imperfect representation, or a piece of media with no representation at all?
There's so much nuance and breadth to how this question can be answered, and I'd love to hear your opinions. Please keep things respectful in the tags/replies!
Personally, I'm of the mindset that the answer heavily depends on the focus of the story. For example, an author writing a fantasy epic that's completely divorced from the real world could include a myriad of peoples without worrying too much about being accurate to the cultures they're inspired by (though research would still need to be done). Meanwhile, a story that takes place in the real world and depicts a story through the lens of a character that is from a specific culture/people would require, at minimum, a cultural consultant or an editor from that culture/group.
If anyone has any books/video essays about this subject, please share them! It's a subject I'm really interested in.
