“You died, Buck. You’re gonna feel a lot of different ways about that. Sometimes all at the same time. I found the best way to process it is to… allow yourself to feel it.”

“How do you feel about that?” The question’s been burning at the tip of Buck’s tongue since he first woke up, since he came out of the coma. Since he first saw the darkness hiding beneath Eddie’s relieved smile– lingering in his features, clinging to the shadows beneath his eyes and the stubble across his jaw. 

Ever since, the question’s been swimming in his mind, itching at his skin, begging to be asked. To be answered. 

Eddie sighs, suddenly very much occupied with trimming the crusts off of Christopher’s sandwich. “Buck–”

“No, I– I’m serious,” Buck presses. He has to know. He can’t bear it any longer. “E-Everyone keeps asking me how I feel. But who’s asking you?”

Eddie sets the knife down on the counter with a small huff. He walks over to the fridge, completely dodging the question. “You think Chris would rather have blueberries or grapes?”

“Grapes,” Buck doesn’t miss a beat. “Eddie.” Buck pushes because Eddie is the one person who pushes back and Buck doesn’t know why Eddie won’t even look at him. 

“Don’t ask me that, Buck.” 

It isn’t a request. 

Buck’s breath hitches, trapped somewhere in the back of his throat because it isn’t a request. It isn’t a command. It isn’t anything more than a raw, unfiltered plea from somewhere deep in Eddie’s chest. 

Buck doesn’t move. Moving feels dangerous. Like he’s waiting for lightning to strike again, but instead of him, it’s Eddie up on that ladder. 

But he needs Eddie to push back. How else is Buck supposed to remember that any of this is real? 

“Why not?” He asks, just as raw. Just as much of a plea. Maybe even a little more desperate.  

There’s something unreadable in Eddie’s expression. His voice is quiet when he speaks, rough in a way it only ever gets when thick with emotion. “Because I don’t want to lie to you.”

“Then don’t.” He swallows around the dryness that’s suddenly appeared in his throat. “I died.” Saying it out loud, saying it seriously , for the first time makes his heart slam into his ribcage. 

“Yeah.” Eddie draws in a long, shaky breath, He scrubs his hand over his face, his chest rising and falling slowly. He doesn’t say anything for a moment. A moment Buck clings to because he’s starting to understand just how much can be missed in a moment. Eddie braces himself against the countertop, fists clenching so tight his knuckles turn white. “It felt like a part of me died, too.”

The push. Buck feels it as the words nudge against his chest and find their way in between his ribs. The words are frank, strong. But they feel like they could shatter any second anyway.  

“Why?”

“You know why.”

Buck holds his breath. “Pretend I don’t.”

“Because when your heart stopped so did mine.” Eddie says, brave and heartbroken all at once. His gaze cuts to Buck and it’s like being struck by lightning all over again. “I love you.”

Eddie’s never said that before. Not without man or dude tacked onto the end of it. And never with such a softness to it. Never with the words dripping with reverence. Never like this. It sends Buck into a tailspin, his chest squeezing and his heart pounding as he replays the three words over in his mind. His pulse hammers in his ears. 

“Eddie,” he breathes. 

Eddie’s chin trembles before he bites his cheek and looks away. “You were just hanging there and I– I couldn’t pull you up.” His voice breaks.

“I’m sorry.” The shaky edge to Buck’s voice wasn’t there a minute ago. 

The sound Eddie barks out is harsh and catches in his nose as he shakes his head. “You don’t—”

He stops himself with a hand to his mouth, pushing away the bite of his words. Eddie curls his arms around himself like he’s trying to hold himself from splitting in two and it makes something in Buck ache. 

“You don’t have to apologize for being struck by lightning, Buck,” Eddie says, softer, gentler but just as certain. There’s forgiveness in his eyes all the same. 

Buck rises from his barstool, walking around the island until he’s closed the distance between them. He reaches for Eddie’s hands, taking them in his own as he meets Eddie’s eyes. “And you don’t have to blame yourself for what happened to me.”

Eddie’s gaze drops and Buck knows what Eddie’s instincts were telling him. He knows because his own are screaming at him to do the same, begging himself to stop exposing the throbbing live wire of a nerve they’d bandaged and pretended wasn’t hurting. 

Eddie barely gets the space to swerve before Buck is grabbing onto the first thing he can reach. Eddie’s hips are warm and soft beneath the harsh fabric of his jeans, giving to the slight pressure of Buck’s fingertips as he holds on. 

Eddie swallows, trying to back away, but Buck follows because if he doesn’t, he doesn’t think he would be able to find this moment again. The counter keeps them pinned and Buck dips down to catch Eddie’s eyes again. 

“Eddie,” he breathes. He’s too close. Close enough that he can count the number of endless lashes framing those hazel eyes. Close enough he can see the heartache swimming behind them. The hope, too. “I’m right here.”

Eddie’s mouth trembles. “But you weren’t.”

“I know,” Buck says. He has the sore chest and the bruises and the lightning branded into his skin to prove it. 

“Three minutes, Buck,” Eddie says, his words wet and thick with emotion fighting to break free from his resolve. “For three minutes you weren’t here. And I-I-I can’t…”

“I love you,” Buck says. Pushes because maybe that’s what they both need. Eddie’s eyes flutter closed as he exhales and Buck pushes again. “I love you, too.” The words roll off his tongue effortlessly, like they’ve been waiting a lifetime for the chance. Maybe they have been.

Eddie’s face twitches before he opens his eyes again. Strong, shaky fingers tangle in his t-shirt, holding him there like Eddie doesn’t want Buck to float away. 

Not even a hurricane could’ve made Buck move then. 

Eddie’s eyes shine as his fingers brush against Buck’s cheek. He touches him like he’s special, not like he’s fragile. Like he’s something precious. 

Buck presses his forehead against Eddie’s and a small breath from Eddie ghosts across Buck’s lips. The moment stretches between them like infinity and Buck breathes through the tension of it. 

“Please,” Buck manages, the word hanging between them in the space between their lips. 

Eddie kisses him and everything settles. The uncertainty snapping like static at the base of his spine softens and the low hum that’s been buzzing beneath Buck’s skin goes quiet. 

His blood sings as he melts into Eddie’s touch. 

A low sigh escapes his lips as Eddie pulls away too soon and Buck can’t help but chase after him. 

“I love you,” Buck murmurs. He doesn’t think he’ll ever tire of saying it, doesn’t think he’ll ever lose sight of the wonder that comes from being in love with Eddie and from being loved by Eddie in return. 

Eddie kisses him again and Buck’s breath hitches, warmth exploding behind his chest. He makes a tiny, contented noise in the back of his throat. He’s never felt more alive. 

Buck was dead, but Eddie brought him back. In more ways than one. 

Eddie breathes life into him in a way he hadn’t realized he so desperately needed, clinging to the inside of his lungs and permeating his soul on the deepest level. They’re two halves of one whole. 

Eddie brings their joined hands to his lips and lets his lips ghost across Buck’s knuckles. And with that, the last of the ache in Buck’s chest ebbs away like the tide beneath a full moon, his heart called home to Eddie’s like waves to the sea.

So I'm not gonna lie, I have most of these fics priv. bookmarked because I HAVEN'T COMMENTED ON THEM YET AND I FEEL REALLY GUILTY ABOUT THAT. But more than one anon has asked for this and it tickles me pink that y'all like my writing enough to trust in my recs. So. (Guys, there are SO MANY amazing writers in this fandom. So many truly breathtaking fics already. I got two hours into this and realized I was going to need to split this into parts because I have too many things to say about each of these and I want to do them all justice.)

@rcmclachlan /ao3 : I will sing RC's praises to the moon and back. There is something about the way RC injects humor into the tiniest of lines that makes me want to scream into a pillow until I pass out. You will see more than one of RC's fics in this list.

@kirkaut /ao3: kirkaut is the reason I jumped on this bandwagon. The unhinged spiral into LFJr obsession and the prevalence of well thought out meta and incredibly hot fic drew me in. If you are not following kirkaut, change that now.

@26-cats-in-a-trenchcoat / catfud_ohplease on ao3: Devastating prose. The ability to turn a theme on a dime and STAB YOU IN THE HEART with it. Mac owns my whole soul when it comes to really scratching that itch behind my eyelids for thematic imagery and really creative ideas for fic that aren't just run-of-the-mill smut/angst/fluff.

@devirnis / ao3: Ali only has one bucktommy fic up on ao3 but it is devine and I love it. Ali is also the only writer who has tempted me into reading buddie. This is not an indictment on buddie fandom or buddie fic writers in general, I just tend to be a one ship kinda gal and I don't really dive into fic for a ship I don't vibe with. Ali's writing has made me reconsider this position.

@beefcakekinard / thingbe on ao3: The domesticity. Literally just reread one of Rose's fics this morning and HAD to comment on it again because it made me want to fling myself to Jupiter.

The way this is a little fucked up. The way the characterizations aren't exactly familiar because they haven't aged into what we know them as in current canon. The way you can see in every broken line and every stutter step that Tommy is falling for Evan and has No Fucking Idea what to do with that. Ugh. Best Met Earlier AU I've ever read.

He blinked as Tommy walked by, eyes sliding closed again before he left. He felt a light touch on the top of his head but figured he was imagining it. He couldn’t think of anyone at the 118 who would touch him that carefully. - just absolutely fucking end me they're so good/bad for each other

A Full Body Workout - Persiflager

Tommy and Buck spend a day trying to distract Eddie from the *gestures vaguely* all of it.

The way this is so quiet in the way it shows you how Tommy and Buck care for each other. The way they are down bad but still so hyperaware of the pace they've set, the things they've talked about. The way they take care of their friend here. I'm obsessed with the tone of this one. Also, as a general theme, nothing draws me in more than well thought out dialogue, and this one has some fucking GREAT dialogue.

Your love is better than ice cream - Cecily_v, liminalmemories

An alternative meet-cute, where-in Tommy doesn’t know the 118 and decides Buck is worth it anyway. Buck is confused but figures some things out.

There is so much I love about this AU. How they meet. How their relationship progresses. How it feels glacially slow in comparison to the canon storyline but also how in character they both are. The foundation of their love in this fic is downright eatable.

Maddie gives great hugs, but she's so small; if she had this guy's build and could basically fold Buck into her like an old blanket, they'd have to pry him out of her arms with the jaws of life.

In the back of Buck's mind, in a place he hasn't discovered, he's already picked out a venue and chosen his centerpieces. He's mentally putting together seating arrangements. This line of Buck's thoughts on Tommy Kinard told me so.

There is something so soft and gentle about this fic. The way Tommy just gives in to the exhaustion and props himself up against Buck because he knows he'll be able to take the weight (he wants to take the weight and Tommy knows it). The quiet flirting, the way they take care of one another. The jumpscare of Marge and Phil and how this fic is right at the edges of exploring that but Buck has me important priorities.

“It was badly done,” - the way this is so in character for Ma Buckley and the way it made me want to SHAKE HER TIL HER TENDONS SHATTERED AND SHE CRUMBLED LIKE A SATISFYING CASINO IMPLOSION

Soft and heartbreaking and mending all at once.

Buck’s got a wedding date, but as far as today goes, he’s also got a regular one.

The way I want to wrap this Buck up tenderly and hide him from the people in his life who DON'T DESERVE HIS AFFECTION, HIS LOVE, HIS JOY.

The non-urgency of this, the absolute too-much-too-soon he's dealing with in his own mind while he grapples with the reality of seizing a second chance with both hands and getting to explore himself within the confines of a very lovely, very sweet and kind, VERY HOT man he wants to get on his knees for.

Beautiful prose, excellent dialogue, an insightful character study.

Tease tidbit Tuesday

I was tagged by the lovely and talented @loserdiaz, @devirnis, @smallandalmosthonest, @tizniz, @bidisasterevankinard

I have….started a new au. Girl dads bucktommy with transmasc buck getting to be a seahorse dad so content warning for trans pregnancy and mentions of labor. this au has bewitched me body and soul and I’m dragging @try-set-me-on-fire down with me <3 <3 so here’s a doodle of happy dads with their fresh baby (Bobby took the picture)

When Eddie grabs Tommy by the crook of his good elbow, Tommy falters. He feels off balance, his stomach swooping and head spinning as he tries to keep up with Eddie’s rapid pace. “Eddie— wait, wait— what’s going on?”

Eddie stops, staring at Tommy before his eyebrows shoot up to his hairline. “You don’t know? Fuck— of course you don’t know, shit.” Eddie smacks his forehead with the heel of his hand.

“Don’t know what?” Tommy can feel his stomach sinking, “Eddie, what don’t I know?”

“Buck is here at the hospital. He’s in labor.”

It feels like the world shifts under Tommy’s feet and no amount of hospital grippy socks will keep him from falling. He sucks in a shuddering breath, and then another when it feels like the first one doesn’t ever reach his lungs.

“Wh–what? But, but he was fine– he wasn’t–” The backs of Tommy’s knees hit the edge of the bed and he sways, only his white knuckle grip on the bed rail keeps him from crashing backward. His next breath comes in too quick, whistling between his teeth as his vision tunnels.

Tease Tidbit Tuesday!

i've gotten the first half of the drunk eddie fic done and ooohhh boyyy it's a lot more than i thought it was going to be, the girls r fightinggggg >:) here, have the exact opposite of a tease and have a full snippet because i have no self control!

By the time he got back to his room, Buck was putting a glass of water on the nightstand next to a bottle of painkillers. “For the morning,” He said when he noticed Eddie looking.

“I doubt it’ll be that bad,” Eddie said, walking towards the bed and only stumbling a little. “A headache maybe.”

“Yeah, yeah, you and your magical abilities to not get bad hangovers,” Buck chuckled, throwing back the covers so Eddie could slid in.

“You’re just jealous,” Eddie joked, feeling lighter than he had all night at the familiar banter between them. This was normal. They could go back to normal and forget this night ever happened. Maybe Eddie could pretend he didn’t remember anything in the morning and that would be that.

“You have no idea,” Buck mumbled under his breath. He gave Eddie an innocent look when he made a questioning sound, not having heard what Buck said. “Try to get some sleep, yeah? We can talk in the morning.”

“You gonna be here in the morning or are you gonna go out with Natalia?” Eddie muttered, his eyes already closing as he laid down against his pillow. He didn’t see the expressions that danced across Buck’s face, the shock or the confusion.

“What does Natalia have to do with anything?” Buck asked, his heart racing. Was Eddie jealous?

Eddie looked at him through sleepy eyes. “You’d rather hang out with her than me,” He said, his voice soft and raw. “You only wanted to hang out tonight cause she was busy. I guess I shouldn’t be upset about that, it’s not like that’s going to change. She’s your priority now, I get it.”

“That’s not true—” Buck started but stopped. “Eddie—”

But Eddie had already fallen asleep, the beer and whiskey catching up to him and making him pass right out the second he was comfortable in bed.

Seven(ish) Sentence Sunday ✍️

Freddie says the words with a shrug like he’s not talking about a fucking life and the fury burning inside Eddie grows hotter. This guy doesn’t give a shit about the people he’s hurt, so blinded by his stupid quest for revenge. Eddie isn’t aware his hands are clenched and shaking, nails digging into the skin of his palms, until there’s a hand on his wrist and Hen’s voice is drifting into his ear, soft and gentle like a trickling stream.

“I know you’re angry, I am too,” she slides her hand down from his wrist to slowly pry his hand open, “but Buck needs us to be calm and in control of ourselves right now, okay Eddie?” Her hand slips into his and she squeezes gently. Eddie can feel the stickiness of blood between their palms from his fingernails. “Trust Bobby, he hasn’t let us down so far, I don’t think he’s planning on starting today.”

“Buck, kids pick up on things, okay?” Eddie says to reassure him. “She probably knew how scared her mom and dad were and she knew you weren’t there. I’m guessing you weren’t exactly lifting her up and playing airplanes the second she was in the door either.”

When Buck doesn’t answer, Eddie continues, “I mean—you better not have been playing airplane, when I know you’re not exactly cleared to lift toddlers yet—”

“She just…” Buck starts, without answering Eddie’s question (and without listening much to his response either) “—she was so shy, and then even when she saw it was me she just climbed up on the couch and cuddled. All day. She wouldn’t color or play, she just stayed glued to my lap. I kept checking her temperature even though Maddie insisted everything was fine—”

“Sounds like she missed you,” Eddie explains, and there’s a gravelly tone to his voice, a quiet vulnerability that comes with the lateness of the hour.

And for a moment, Buck wonders if Eddie’s still talking about Jee at all…

Seven Sentence Sunday

This fic is currently just over 7k words and I've only got a few more scenes to add to it before it's done 🥰

They stand in silence for a long moment. Long enough that Eddie is about to take the silence as his answer. “I didn’t want to screw things up,” Buck huffs a humourless laugh as he takes a seat at the table, “But I guess I made a mess of things anyway.” Eddie crosses his arms over his chest, nodding slightly as he remembers how it stung when Buck kissed him then fled in the middle of the night after he told him Natalia and him had broken up. He remembers feeling humiliated when it turned out the kiss at the bar was just a favour to lose that girl's attention. But he also remembers how loved he felt after he got hurt and Buck was there to take care of him, and the domesticity when they talked about wanting to expand their family together. “I’m not exactly known for having successful relationships,” Buck continues. “Everyone leaves in the end. And I can’t lose you too, Eddie. You and Chris mean so much to me.”

Writing Patterns

I was tagged by @princessfbi to share the first line of my ten most recent fics and see if I can identify any patterns. Here we go!

1. If the Fruit is Forbidden Why is it Within Arm's Reach?

Ed really should’ve known better.

2. Winning Prizes for Rotten Judgment

Ed’s daughter and family have seen fit to forgive him for his mistakes and various fuck ups, but he’s pretty sure the gods aren’t being so kind.

3. We Can't Succeed but We Love Trying

For the record? Eddie one hundred percent blames Connor for all of this.

4. Racing with the Brakes Cut

Eddie wraps his fingers around the wheel of the car and slowly closes his eyes.

Six months ago, if you’d asked Buck if he’d give a partner oral in public (again), he’d say no way, those days were behind him. He’s not the guy who fucks strangers in public restrooms or the alleys outside bars or eats a girl out in her car in the crowded parking lot or… Okay, so maybe, there’s an exhibition kink in there somewhere. That’s something to unpack later.

The first time, it’s an accident, or as much of an accident as it’s possible for a thing like this to be.

Like most things when it comes to their sex life, Buck had to talk Eddie into it.

There is definitely a pattern here - two patterns, I'd say. the first is that I tend to start with a character's internal monologue, and the second is I tend to start with that internal monologue establishing the setting/story by immediately complaining to the audience about something or someone.

I also tend to start things off with a bit of humor through that complaint, or when it comes to the smut fics, a humorous observation of the situation (i.e. maybe I have a kink, look it was an accident at first, I had to talk my partner into it, etc).

Not sure what that says about me, LOL, but here we are!

Some more from girls dad’s bucktommy fic. bobby holds Annie for the first time…I’m sorry.

“Her name is Annie Bobby Kinard.”

“Oh.”

Bobby stumbles, the world tilting under his feet, the only thing keeping him grounded is the warm weight in his arms.

The back of his knees meet the chair at the side of the bed and Bobby sits down heavily. His chest is tight, his face hot, the heat bleeding into his cheeks, down his throat, into his nose and behind his eyes where it prickles with the threat of tears.

“O-oh,” he croaks out again.

He sucks in a great gulping breath, but it catches, hitching in the back of his throat. His chin trembles. He tries again, the wet rasp of his inhale echoing in his ears, but his exhalation comes too fast, too loud. It explodes from his chest with a sob, the force of it cracking his ribs open and letting his heart spill out into the small bundle in his arms.

He cries. Big, loud sobs that wrack his entire frame as he bows his head and presses it into the soft folds of Annie’s blanket and breathes in the new scent of her through his clogged nose. His tears are soaking into the fabric and he wants to apologize, but nothing leaves his mouth except for another wretched sob.

Bobby never thought he would have this— he thought he had killed all his chances to be a grandfather. And with Buck— with Buck he never dared to hope. He never allowed himself the thought that he was as much of a father to Buck as Buck was a son to him. He didn’t let himself imagine it, didn’t think he deserved to stake that claim even in the privacy of his own mind.

y'all liked the snippet from yesterday so have some more from that fic!

“Don’t worry about it,” Natalia waved him off. “I’ll catch an Uber back home.”

“Are you sure?” Eddie hesitated. He didn’t want to leave her there by herself.

“I’m a tough girl, Eddie,” Natalia laughed. “I can handle myself. I’ll be fine until the car gets here.”

“Okay, if you’re sure…,” Eddie still didn’t feel right about leaving her, despite the fact that he wasn’t exactly itching to be in her presence, but he couldn’t force her to accept a ride home.

“I’m sure,” Natalia smiled. She came forward and put her hand on Buck’s shoulder, reaching up to give him a kiss on the cheek. “You two get home safe, yeah? I’ll see you later.”

“Bye!” Buck calls as he moves out of Eddie’s arms and towards the truck. Natalia and Eddie watched as he struggled with the handle for a minute before getting the door open. Collapsing into the seat, Buck got himself situated, doing up his belt and closing the door.

Eddie turned back to Natalia. “Hey, about earlier…”

“Nothing to say, Eddie. You’re in love with him,” Natalia said softly, looking at him with a kind expression.

Eddie flushed bright red. “I’m not—”

Natalia snorted. “Yeah, you are. Even if you don’t know it. He loves you too, you know,” She murmured, looking back at Buck who now had his head leaning against the window and from here it looked like he had fallen asleep. “Just…take care of him, okay? He’s a good man. Maybe one of the best.”
