I think when the characters in “Bill is back, somehow, and he has a human body, somehow” fics discuss the dangers of letting him roam free and do whatever evil things he wants they should also discuss the counterpoint that the more freedom he is given the more his chances of dying of a drug overdose within a year approach 100%

sometimes I'll see pushback against criticism of a work of fiction that ultimately just comes down to "I'm just feel grateful that I got to see this" and I cannot stress enough that you should love yourself enough to have higher standards than "this was made available to me" for things that aren't time-limited/ephemeral/actually specifically made for you as an individual with that as the creative intent.

I'm extremely salty

So yesterday I wanted to start a round of loundry, y'know, normal sunday things.

Except. The faucet that connects the washing machine to the water wouldn't open properly. Meaning the washing machine didn't get enough water. Meaning I couldn't do laundry after all.

So we called our landlord. Who wanted to come the next day to look at it (which is of course today) and asked if someone would be home. My husband's job doesn't allow him to do homeoffice. Mine doesn't either usually, because you can't do experiments in a lab from home. But luckily I'm allowed to do analysis and protocol prep from home, so I thought about my plans for today and decided I could be home by early afternoon.

So, this was the agreement: the landlord would call me in the early afternoon as soon as he's ready to come to the flat, to check if I'm home yet.

So, today I nyoomed through my experiments, skipping anything extra like small breaks I usually do to keep myself sane, and managed to get through the practical part at 11am, so I was home and had lunch by 1pm.

By my definition, early afternoon starts at maybe 2pm.

At 3pm I called our landlord to check in (in case he thought that I would call)

Of course, he didn't answer the phone.

It's now almost 4.30pm; around the time my husband usually finishes work, which means he's probably home in about an hour.

Still no word from the landlord

And here I am, wondering why I hurried so much this morning.

And if I'll have to do it again just because he can't keep to agreed times

PSA for educators-

You will not be able to teach your students the faults of AI just by repeating talking points about how it's bad.

You are going to have to USE AI in order to understand where the faults are. Yes, that means spending time playing with ChatGPT and Character.AI or whatever other AI happens to be in vogue with the kids. AI is a learning algorithm, which means it is constantly shifting its behavior. Some of its flaws get patched only for new issues to arise. However, once you get to know the machine, it becomes easier and easier to trip it up.

People are more likely to believe AI is faulty and can't be used as a research source after they see it fail repeatedly. And in order to make it fail in front of others, you will have to know how to use it and tease it.

Don't worry about environmental impact. There's a lot of nonsense claims about AI using five gallons of water per prompt or other scary sounding numbers which is just not true. Most AIs can be run on the processing power of an average gaming PC, there's already hobbyists who have open source AIs installed directly on their machines and get it to work with their usual processing power.

Educating people is far more important than using a little electricity to gain some knowledge.

Script

This is one of the very first ideas I had for a Golden Girls fic, although I haven't quite finished it yet. The plot is simple enough (it's a fairly straightforward the Golden Wives realize they're all in love and get together story), but there is something interesting about it -- i.e., that it's written in script format :) when I first imagined it, I could only see it as a sort of lost TGG episode, and so I figured it would make sense to write is as if it was actually the script for an episode of the show. It's been a really fun experiment! It turns out writing a script is very different from writing a "normal" story, haha.

I hope you don't mind if I screenshot my snippet instead of copying it here, it's just to convey the format properly:

Soulmates

This is an idea I had very recently; I was inspired by a prompt I read here on tumblr. I don't want to give too much away, but it's essentially a Blanche/Dorothy soulmate AU. The basic idea is that people who have a soulmate get naturally occurring 'tattoos' of what others think of their soulmate (so, in this case, Dorothy has tattoos of what people think of Blanche and vice-versa). It's more of a character study than anything 😂 but there is a pinch of romance in there too! This one is almost complete, I just need to edit it a little more, so I'd love to be able to post it soon enough :)

the thing that gets me about the lack of technological literacy in a lot of young gen z and gen alpha (NOT ALL. JUST A LOT THAT I SEE.) isn't necessarily the knowledge gap so much as it's the lack of curiosity and self-determination when it comes to interacting with technology.

you have the knowledge gap side of things, obviously, which highlights issues related to the experience of using pieces of hardware/software becoming detached from the workings of the hardware/software itself. you start seeing people (so called "ipad kids") who are less and less familiar with the basics of these machines—like knowing how to explore file and system directories, knowing what parts of the system and programs will be using the most power and interacting with each other, knowing what basics like RAM and CPU are and what affects them etc. these aren't things you need to sink a lot of time into understanding, but they seem to be less and less understood as time has gone on.

and this lack of familiarity with the systems at work here feeds into the issue that bothers me a lot more, which is a lack of curiosity, self-determination, and problem solving when younger people use their technology.

i'm not a computer scientist. i'm not an engineer. i have an iphone for on-the-go use and i have a dinky 2017 macbook air i use almost daily. that's it! but i know how to pirate things and how to quality check torrented material. i know how to find things in my system directories. i know how to format an external hard drive for the specifications of my computer. i know how to troubleshoot issues like my computer running slowly, or my icloud not syncing, or more program-specific problems. this is NOT because i actually know a single thing about the ~intricacies~ of hardware or software design, but because i've taken time to practice and to explore my computer systems, and MOST IMPORTANTLY!! to google things i don't know and then test out the solutions i find!!!!

and that sounds obvious but it's so clear that its just not happening as much anymore. i watched a tiktok the other day where someone gave a tutorial on how to reach a spotify plugin by showing how to type its url in a phone's browser search bar, then said "i'll put the url in the comments so you guys can copy and paste it!!!!!" like ?????? can we not even use google on our own anymore?? what's happening???

this was a long post and it sounds so old of me but i hear this lack of literacy far too much and the defence is always that it's not necessary information to know or it's too much work but it is necessary for the longevity and health of your computers and the control you have over them and it ISN'T too much work at all to figure out how to troubleshoot system issues on your own. like PLEASE someone help.
