What Pride Means To Me (25/6/24)

it's the smile on the face of a child, so trusting of the moment the colours flying through the air, hands held without reservation.

pushing out the fear from shouts in stairwells, moving on from things forgotten, because it'll all be okay in the end, right? there's life and love at the end, isn't there?

in being seen, being apologised to, "this is why we don't make assumptions," a lesson taught from two words scratched up on a nametag.

or that feeling in your chest, a tell me you love me, tell me you believe me, tell me that you know we're okay.

and if it's a shout into the static, "why aren't you listening to me?" i wish you all the best, because i know how much it hurts.

and seeing them made me look in, sides of me i'd never dared dig up further. looking for a sign, so i didn't have to ask first. finding you made it feel good to be this way.

with time and effort, and a three-day crisis, and your own brand of pink and green love it got to a stage where i could be this, and know i had someone on my side.

it's a stolen flag in a display. either a "fuck you" or a "me too." these things just happens sometimes, it doesn't pass just because the months said so.

and i know i haven't had it bad, and i know people who've struggled more, and i know what they did to escape when home wasn't safe.

they've years on me, only a couple, if nothing else their love for being queer beats out everything they've dealt with. their pride is my role model.

if it starts and ends with jokes, a safety between two people so we're not hushed words in some bar, but reaching out hands

"i just want to check in," "i know just how difficult it is" "it's something else to witness." it's something else to be the target.

intertwining fingers, we've got this, let me look out for you. "there's so much joy," and "i'm here if you want to talk."

if pride is in the little things, sharing the good and the bad, the expected and the surprises, then it's in the connections i cannot live without.

Spoiler-Covering on the T&B Wiki: Feedback *Needed*

Spoilers. It's kind of absurd and insane when you go on a wiki for the *latest* content and none of it is spoiler covered. And by latest I'm talking about like, maybe released 12 hours ago. At HeroTV Database, we don't do that. All story-related content is put under a year incubation period and must be covered. The only exception to this is S2 Cour 2, which whilst it still must be covered, has an indefinite embargo date atm.

I've made 3 iterations of a "Spoiler" template, aiming to hide text and images by default. Version 1 was just a ripoff of the template as seen on FE Fandom wiki (please forgive me) but that ran into the issue of the expand/collapse prompt being off to the right side and the more text was hidden I came to mind, the lower the click prompt fell, for some reason. It being outside of the box and floating away was not ideal for design. Also, this had to be used in-conjuction with another template to mark off the "end" of a spoiler. Most, not all (namely multiple paragraphs of info and anything containing images) needed this, and it's just very clunky to use and look at. Version 2 was promising at first, but two big issues were that it was a table of sorts and I couldn't find a way to make the drop-down opaque (either just white, or it copied the colour from the primary banner part), and spoilers must reside in the table, meaning if the content it contains is long enough, it will push itself down below any other templates or images just to display. Not great. Version 3 is the best one to date, and would be perfect if not for one problem: Every use of it on a page is recognised as the same instance, since the ID for the "Show me the spoilers" button in the banner is the same across all uses of it. Clicking on just one activates every single spoiler on the page, so you might want to see one but not the others and if you don't close the first one...problems. Yeah. This was so close.

After this specific failure of V3, I went to look for help in the Miraheze discord server, and everyone over there is oh so nice n helpful. Provided by a user going by 'canada' in the discord, they've given us code for a "block spoiler-cover" function that utilises CSS and JS to work, and is VIEWABLE ON MOBILE!!!! (This is something that would not be possible on Fandom, as Fandom Mobile has no JavaScript OR CSS support because Devs are liars when they say they want to make mobile fandom better.)

Before properly implementing it onto main pages, I *require* feedback. The link above is to the sandbox, where the spoiler boxes are being tested. Use the "Show all spoilers" to reveal all of them at once, or click/tap on a box to show, and click/tap again to hide. Tapping on an image takes you to the file page of an image, covered or not, so to not get taken to an image page, safest bet (usually) is to tap on a corner, or click where your mouse cursor does not shift into a hand ready to click. I'll see if there's anything I can put in the code to stop it from doing that. I'm certain I can change the colours of the spoiler box (current colours are purely placeholders), but colour suggestions should try to contrast with red, white, black and the shade of blue that's recognised as hex #2A3C45 (A darker blue intended for a dark mode). The colour should also be somewhat desaturated so it's not blinding to look at, so a pastel colour could be beneficial, maybe a pink or yellow, it's up to you what would look best! The more opinions the better!

The feedback is primarily for if we want this to begin with, and for stating adjustments you want before it does go into effect on main pages. If you do not want this to go into effect and want something else, please make that voice heard!

i regard the RE fandom with the same kind of baffled contempt that xenosys vex has for the FFXIV community. but instead of being hypocritical about cosmetic mods vs gameplay mods, they're hypocritical in their elitism. they'll jump down my throat for not accepting every reading of the canon/characters as valid and then turn around and dox a minor for not having the same opinions on ships as them.

people from your own ship community will turn on you and dogpile you for not shipping the ship the same way that they do. i've been disowned from a huge chunk of the eagleone fandom -- to the point where they refuse to use the eagleone ship name anymore and ban anyone from the discord server who associates with me -- despite me being the sole person out here trying to prove that eagleone is canon -- because i *checks notes*

hi! mumfriend! i was wondering what your thoughts are on having an oc and then finding out there are others who have the same name for their oc as yours? or same faceclaim part of same family x canon pairing? is there an etiquette or protocol or understanding? wanting to get into fandom and sharing my fics again instead of just rambling to my significant other and keeping them for myself. i haven't really been involved since i was a teen, now well into my 20s lol

first of Imma need to preface this reply saying that a) we always need more OCs and more creators, so of course you should share what you have <3 and b) naturally I cannot speak for the whole community on this, but at least in my little bubble of the community here's how we roll-

(under a cut, because long answer, obviously)

FCs are all up for grabs. always. We all scramble for resources and we all go where they are good. eg I can't go "Oh Bruna Marquezine as Catarina de Lurton has such a beautiful aesthetic for a Dornish OC" and then be pissed when others use her, too. The number of FCs is finite, overlaps happen and that's nothing to be mad about.

I'd say - personally, for me - the same goes for names. I spent literal days in the alphabetized "Westerosi names for Women" list to find Elyana's name. Poor Discord girlies really suffered those days. I was so, so happy and proud when I decided on Elyana, made my first edit, posted and THEN realised that one of Madz's Dornish Diamonds was called Elyana as well 😬 It happens. We see or hear names we think are pretty and sometimes we don't even realise we might have seen them on another OC.

Now for the last bit - the background/story aspects - I think this is where it gets a little bit trickier to navigate. And again, just my very own. very personal opinion -

we all play in other ppl's sandboxes with our fanfictions. that comes with limitations or in world circumstances that are the same for us with all our OCs. So there are things that are bound to overlap - would I get mad at everyone else who has an OC who is friends with Lily Evans and/or the Marauders and ends up with Sirius Black, just because that is the premise for my girl Moira? No.

Now, if someone had an OC who is friends with Lily Evans and/or the Marauders, ends up with Sirius Black, has a daughter with him, wants to become a nurse, but then decides to lead a hermit's life instead after Sirius is imprisoned and ends up homeschooling her Sirius-Lookalike daughter while selling herbs for potion making and wood for wand making? Now THAT would prompt me to seek a conversation with that person 😅

Long story short - the universe is infinite, resources are not and as long as you don't lift whole chunks of background/story/plot from other people's OCs, you're good 😉

X. boy, this place has been a DOOZY. I have obviously been very MIA because of a lot of real life things, but also haven't exactly known what to do with this blog for quite some time. RP has always been an exciting and happy escapism hobby for me but over the last several months here, it has been made to feel like one of the most isolating struggles and I really hated feeling like my lifelong love affair with writing & playing silly little fictional characters was irreparably ruined and over. I do think I will be deleting all inbox asks, prompts and ALL drafts just for everything to feel like an entirely new slate here. I have always kept a running muse list (more to remind myself) but I may amend it to only things active as they come and go because I also struggle when people request muses from said list when I haven't been feeling them for months. So I got prompted for an AU in a discord server for an event. And me, being Extremely predictable, bypassed all the other AUs for a (not SW) fandom and went straight to Star Wars.

I promptly sidled up to the car. Slapped the hood, and proudly told myself "I can fit so many AUs in this sandbox."

And it was just supposed to be a joke. But then I thought about it and started putting serious thought into it and now I am going to share because I want to.

For both WIP Wednesday, and Star Wars Wednesday, I present to you: The AU that entertains exactly one (1) person, me.

Rune Factory 4, but throw it in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Takes place during the Imperial era, for obvious Sechs Empire = Galactic Empire. They even both come with an evil Emperor. It basically writes itself

Earthmates = Jedi. Rare to the point of being mythological/urban legends. Super special and power (Space) wizards. Very few remain after the explicit (sw) or implied (rf) genocide of their kind enacted by the Empire

World building: each town is now a System, and the whole kingdom is now a Sector. Therefore, Town of Selphia in Kingdom of Norad becomes Selphia System in the Norad Sector.

Now for characters!

With so many more alien races to choose from I can go absolutely ham with everyone, and I really only have the vaguest ideas of who is what now in this AU.

I think the Guardians are all going to be Force Users of different kinds. They don't all have to be Jedi, but I want them all to be strong with the Force.

Ventuswill: similarly to canon, she is an ancient, god-like being who has watched over Selphia since time immemorial. Extremely strong with the Force, kind of on the scale of the Bendu. May or may not remain a dragon. Because space dragons!

Frey/Lest: former Jedi. Depending on when in the Imperial era the story happens they could either be a Jedi or padawan who survived Order 66, or an initiate who escaped the temple. Because they are an rf protagonist, they still get amnesia that wipes their memory completely blank, so even they forget who/what they were. But Venti does help them reconnect with the Force and realize they were a Jedi. And very suddenly they become Selphia's biggest secret. Which doesn't stay secret for long because Jadi cannot help what they are, and they must do good.

Oh my gosh I've just realized Frey can be a twi'lek, and her skin can be the same green color as her hair in game! She even gets to keep her signature look with the pigtails!

Arthur: hate to say it, but he's an Imperial. Being Norad royalty sent to take over Selphia in rf transfers easily to being an Imperial Governor. His father, Moff Lawrence, rules over the entire Norad Sector, and he sends Arthur to be governor of the Selphia System, because while it may be small and relatively unimportant, it is a good source of materials for various, nefarious Imerial means. However. Arthur, still being Arthur, shows up on his first day of governing and says "fuck this job" and deliberately tried to Not Do It. A sort of malicious compliance, because getting nothing done will draw scrutiny, but doing the absolute worst of the bare minimum means everybody just kind of ignores Selphia and him. Leaving Arthur free to practice his dark and dirty secret, which is spying for the Rebellion and skimming off what funds and resources he can to help fight the good fight.

Most of the town cast is still doing their in game roles with just environmental changes for the AU, so they could be aliens or have a different back story, and I won't hash them all out here (because I'm also not 100% settled on some details)

Doug: still a spy, sent by the Empire to keep an eye on Ventuswill, because even if she has spent the last 1000 years being Exceedingly neutral and minding the business of her planet and nothing else, the Empire is not just going to let an extremely powerful force being go unmonitered.

Leon: a Jedi from a long time ago. I still think there's going to be a need for the guardians to have sacrificed themselves to help Venti sustain herself over the centuries, so that whole plot line is still viable. Meaning Leon is a Jedi, but he is Extremely out of date compared to what the Jedi Order was before the genocide. And considering the Empire's pretty successful 'delete the jedi from cultural memory' campaign, and Leon being Leon, and Lest/Frey's amnesia, all sorts of chaos and fun times and trading can ensue while Leon helps Lest/Frey with their Jedi training.

I haven't figured out yet what I want the other guardians to be, force-user wise. But I do think Dylas is gonna be a dark-sider, he has the anger and passion and I think that vibes more with him than traditional Jedi teachings. Amber I think is too sweet and pure to be anything but light-side. Dolce I could go either way on, she needs more thought.

Someone needs to be a wookie, and I am torn between it being Volkanon, the most emotional and huggiest wookiee, who has dedicated his very long life to being Ventuswill's companion. Or Porcoline, who just keeps finding lost souls and adopting them. Much like one rescue stray kittens.

Maybe both. Both could be funny.

I'm still working on the rest of the townsfolk!

It would not be star wars without droids! And I think Lest/Frey get a companion droid, as a treat. Maybe an astromech, or someone small and travel-sized like a BD unit.

PLOT TIME!

Okay, it really doesn't differ much from the rune factory plot. Your protagonist is on the way to Selphia to make an important and secret delivery, Imperial sabotage, they crash land and get amnesia.

I'm thinking instead of rune crystals, they are bringing special kyber crystals to replace the guardians that Ventuswill was previously relying on to stay alive/in power (because there aren't enough forse sensitives left in the galaxy. And also, living sacrifices are not sustainable.)

The different dungeons each of the guardians are in are the ruins of former temples of their own Force Practices.

There's still a showdown against the Empire, but I don't think it's on the same scale as it was in the rf game. Probably just messing up some Grand Moff's shiny new battle station so he can't enforce his cruel will upon the sector.

But that's what I've got so far! I had a boring day at work and lots of time to think about things while I was avoiding tumblr to not see any Mando spoilers 😂

EDIT: I had more thoughts! Mostly about Leon being a Jedi.

Just thinking about Leon waking up after his long sleep and instinctually reaching out into the Force to feel the presence of other Jedi in the galaxy, only to find the post-order 66 aching void left there. He probably lived through or in the aftermath of one of the Sith wars, he knew Jedi could be few and far in-between, but he's never felt emptiness like this. He's never felt the dark side so strong.

On a brighter note. Leon training Frey/Lest. Leon, 1-2 thousand years out of date for Jedi teachings, and Frey/Lest with so much head trauma they can't remember anything. Y'all know that scene from TLJ, where Luke is teaching Rey on the rocks? That's Leon teaching them 😂

L/F: *puts their hand out*

Leon: 🙄🙄🙄 ... fine. *picks up some long grass* reach out with the Force. Feel the energy around you, binding everything together *tickles their hand with the grass*

Crystal Legends is a roleplay forum for Final Fantasy set in a fantasy au, magic and magitek setting with elements drawn dominantly from the Final Fantasy series. The roleplay is primarily sandbox style and character driven, with periodic moderator prompting to keep things interesting and multiple discord-based minigames such as chocobo breeding, monster fighting, and crafting.

Canon characters can be reimagined into a new environment, living side by side with canon characters from various parts of the franchise as well as original characters.

Hi, Juli! Ooh, good questions.

4. What piece of writing are you most proud of?

Hm. You know, this question is very similar to the "favorite fic" question from the other ask list... but being proud of something isn't quite the same thing as liking it best. So, I'm going to give a different answer this time, and say that the piece of writing I'm proudest of is Thoughts that Breathe and Words that Burn, the origin story for the Poet!Crowley Antonio Penn-verse.

I enjoy the premise of the fic, and I'm happy enough with my writing of it overall. But the thing I'm really proud of with this particular work is that it helped build the Penn-verse sandbox, and to inspire an astounding number of other people (you obviously among them, Juli! :D) to take part and create their own wonderful stories and poems based on it.

First in the Ace Omens Discord community where the idea first took shape. And then even reaching and inspiring some people outside of the server! I'm still absolutely blown away by the fact that The Collected Works of Antonio Penn now contains literal dozens (and counting) of works. Getting to be a part of this collective creativity explosion has been such a joy... and I'm definitely proud of the story that played a role in spawning it.

5. What have you improved on most this year?

Short-form writing, no question. Trimming word count for maximum economical effect. Packing a scene or a story, complete with description and emotion, into just a few words. This was a challenge I originally started trying to tackle towards the very end of 2020, when I first started writing prompt fill drabbles and ficlets with self-imposed word limits, but I really got into the swing of it in Spring 2021, I think, when I wrote a series of 100-word Ineffable Drabbles for @kedreeva​’s March Flash Fiction prompts.

And then, over the course of the rest of the year, not only did I put in much more short-form practice and become way  more comfortable with that writing style, somehow it seems to have become... almost my trademark, or... something like that? Idk, but I do know I’ve had multiple people tell me they seek out my fic (a notion which leaves me very 🥰😭🥰😭 every time) when they want something short to read. And my DandelionDrabbles pseud now has 130+ ficlets posted in its name, the vast majority of which I wrote in 2021. So, well... regardless of quality, I’d certainly say I’ve improved at short-form stuff at least in terms of quantity. XD

Oh, and I’ve also gotten much better at writing absolutely sickening levels of softness without feeling too self-conscious about it. Much to the detriment of the poor victims who keep reporting me to the soft authorities in the Ace Omens server, of course!

6. What parts of your writing do you want to improve next year?

You know, I honestly haven’t really given this too much thought. I definitely hope that my work will improve in general, and I could easily point out a good many areas of writing that I’d like to get better at... but I don’t have one or a few specific goals at this point. Right now, I’m at a place where I think my main goal needs to just be to try to keep writing something that I do for fun, not out of a sense of stress or obligation.

(In the context of fanfiction, anyway; I have enough requisite writing-related things to do for various things IRL whether I like it or not, that — even though they’re all obviously still writing — I try to keep these categories as separate in my mind as possible.)

Hopefully I will improve, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if as 2022 unfolds I find myself working on something specific. But I’ll have to see where the year takes me.

7. What's the story or fic that you're most excited to work on or share next year?

Returning to the Penn-verse, I am definitely looking forward to finishing up and then posting the fluffy reveal sequel I’ve been working on.I’ve been telling people since October that the sequel is almost done — and I mean it, and it is almost done! it's just that it hasn’t gotten any closer to being done recently :P — I just need to a) figure out how I want to wrap it up and b) get myself to actually write it. So that should be fun, when its time comes. Which will be sooner rather than later, I hope.

Another story I’m excited to share soon, which I actually wrote a few months ago but still haven’t gotten around to posting, is a Lesley/Maud ficlet. It was my first time attempting to write their characters, but I’m quite pleased with how it turned out — and eager to add to the small pool of fics about this lovely couple of characters who get so comparatively little screen time.

A new murder mystery roleplay has materialized on Discord.

What mysteries lie within this innocuous community? Why does a foreboding forest strangle the light out of its surroundings? What compels its inhabitants to commit atrocities?

That is for you to find out.

You slowly begin to wake up and regain consciousness at the sound of quiet shuffling, low whispers, and gentle breathing. The sound of waves outside of whatever structure you find yourself in fills your ears as you envision a massive body of water surrounding you. You know you opened your eyes, yet you cannot see...?

Less than a second after, you come to feel a pounding headache strike inside your head like a hammer to an anvil. You struggle in place for however long the momentary psychic damage lasts before you begin to settle back into place. Your hands and legs are tied together; you cannot move. You are blinded with some cloth-like material tightly wrapped around your head to cover your eyes. Your cheek is cold and your shoulder and neck are sore. You haven’t moved in a considerable amount of time. Your stomach growls hungrily and you unconsciously move your cranium to look around, even if you know it’s a worthless endeavor. Instead, you focus on the waves that rock against you, another unsettling realization sets in. You’re on a boat, and you begin to sweat at whatever fresh hell you find yourself in.

“Hey, how long are we?” You perk your ears at the unfamiliar voice, prompting you to stay quiet in fear of what this stranger might do to you upon learning of your awakening.

“One hour. We are almost there.” Another unfamiliar voice? Panic begins to grip your heart, even more than before. How many people are there? What do they want with you? Why are you on a boat and where are they taking you?

“I will check on our cargo to ensure none have died, else this trip will be for nothing.” Wait...what? Cargo!? Rather than waves in your ears, the overwhelming sound of your heartbeat begins to fill them like an endless metronome. Thump. Thump. Thump. In addition to your heartbeat, you hear a half-opened door creak fully open as one of the strangers begins to take quiet steps within the room you’re in. Their steps are eerily silent, with the only notification of their presence being the slight shift in weight of the floor as they pass by you; you pray they don’t prod at you to see if you’re awake. The stranger continues to stand still. Moments pass by that feel like an eternity, and you feel your blood begin to run cold as you notice the floor bend slightly in front of you. The stranger is standing in front of you, their gaze penetrating through to your skin like scissors through paper. Goosebumps dot your body and you feel your hair rising. They know you’re awake.

The stranger huffs before they begin to walk away, silent and swift out the door as they first came in. The sheer shock of the event knocks you out cold as you hear swaying voices talking once more between the waves. You hear the door slam shut. Darkness envelops you, and you black out.

As we’ve shown in our summary, this server is a competitive, application-based roleplay for semi-lit and literate-level writers. The theme is “nonlinear with supernatural elements”. The theme is vague, and for good reason, but for those who want to know more, I’m about to list some of the fun stuff we’ll have cooked up for you!

- A life-like setting filled with NPCs with their own stories to develop and secrets to explore

- An open-world/sandbox map with highly-organized channels that are all almost completely open from the start

- An in-game store and currency to encourage participation in events and PvP play

- A story that will progress depending on the cast’s level of interaction

- A Killing Game that will continue onwards regardless of a failed trial

- Free colored sketches of OCs for active/engaging cast members

- The dead may influence the game

Lastly, the roleplay itself is inspired by video games such as Danganronpa, Darkwood, Welcome to the Game 2, and Bloodborne, along with other RPG and tabletop elements. As for what that implies, you’ll have to wait and see for yourself! Though prior knowledge about these games is not required for acceptance into this server. All applied characters must be OCs.

Happy holidays everyone!! I hope y’all had a chance to spend time with loved ones (virtual or otherwise) and eat some delicious holiday treats :) I’m so late to this party but am excited to reflect on the past year. Thank you to the lovely @xanthippe74, @the-starryknight, @erebeus-roxy, @bluebutter-art, @peachpety, and @skeptiquexx for the tag!! While I’ve been writing in the hp fandom for a bit, this was the year I wrote my longest work and really had the chance to connect with so many wonderful fandom friends <33 

One of my top five favourite fics is currently part of an anonymous fest, so I’ll add it once reveals are posted. In no particular order, these are my top four favourites: 

the god of ghosts and dreams This was one of the first fics I wrote this year and it was such fun! I’d been wanting to do a Hades/Persephone AU, and this prompt from the Ides of Drarry was the perfect opportunity to do so. Harry is Hades and Draco is Persephone and the fic follows the classic tale, with a few changes to fit the sweepstake prompt. 

he touched me, so I live to know  I wrote this for @hd-fan-fair for an absolutely wonderful prompt by @xanthippe74. This fic was super important to me because it was the first time I wrote an ace character. The format of the fic, a 5+1, also gave me the chance to look at a few canon scenes from a fresh perspective. I really enjoyed weaving quotes from the books with my own prose, and would definitely like to try it again sometime. 

Kid Pro Quo This fic was also an important one to me because of the theme it explored: being childless by choice. In the fic, Draco and Harry are getting ready to have a baby with Luna as their surrogate. As the fic progresses, we get to see different people who have chosen not to have children, like Pansy. Ultimately, I wanted to write about why it can be so challenging to not have children in the face of society’s pressure to do so. 

I Will Follow You Into the Dark  This was my first Witcher fic and it was also the first fic I worked with a beta from start to finish (which definitely helped the fic become what it was). It was exciting to play in a new sandbox and explore new characters, something I hope to do more of in the future. 

As a bonus, I’m also including one last little ficlet (more of a drabble really) since a lot of my recent work has been microfics and drabbles. 

bright recursions This was written for the Drarry Discord Writers Corner Drabble Challenge and it was the first time I ever tried to write mcd. It was also the first time I got to write a Fibonacci fic—which is now a format I love to do. Despite the incredibly specific word counts for each section, I find a sense of freedom in the challenge. There’s something freeing when you don’t have to think about format or structure and can just focus on the content of the story. 

This was so much fun! I am a reflective person by nature, so it was nice to have an excuse to muse about my fic writing year. how do you get into roleplaying on a ff server? like how do you do it and how do you know if your character is lore compliant? ;A; pls youre a big inspo to me

*Hugs Nonny* Getting into RP on a FF server can vary; I don’t actually RP much these days, outside of some friends I already have connections to--and that in itself can be difficult just due to Life! It can take time, and patience, and some fits and starts.

And this gets...really really long, so buckle up and go below the cut, please. :)

In game there’s always the RP status tag, and just doing RP with folks in public spaces. There may be trolls now and then, but they can be ignored. I personally find Balmung’s Quicksand area too busy and anxiety inducing and not actually all that conducive to actual RP, even “meet at a tavern” walk-up type. But unless you already have a ready-made group of friends/FCmates willing to RP more than some random walk-ups with you, it may take some legwork to find folks you can and want to write with.

Social Media There are a couple of RP community blogs, like @mooglemeet​ and @ffxiv-crystal-rp​  and plenty of server-specific ones. There’s also some Discords for these communities. They host and advertise events and reblog people who are looking for RP contacts. Some of them have running gdoc calendars and in game linkshells and fellowships as well.

Shofie has a good post about Tumblr/social media RP blogging.

It’s a fact now that social media outside game is a way to make contacts, or even a medium for RP itself. There are few centralized websites/forums for server RP communities anymore. Making connections over your social media, like Tumblr and Twitter, can help find RP. You can’t just throw your own character info out there or reblog prompts hoping others bite, though; you have to put in some work and show interest in others, too. This can be difficult and even scary. That’s OK.

RP is about collaboration and creating with other people, which means finding folks you can write with, and who see you as someone interesting but also interested in them and their OCs. If you want to keep it a solo endeavor focused on your own OCs, write fanfic (which I’ve actually made friends and gotten RP interests that way too through comment interactions, so hey).

If you reblog a prompt from someone, see others on your dash reblogging prompts, if people reblog that prompt post from you? Send them asks! Alternatively, don’t wait for prompts, just send asks, comments, or chats saying hello and things you notice or like about their blog/character/posts they make. Try to form connections with people you think are genuinely interesting and might be fun to talk with. Social media should be, well, social.

BUT respect boundaries, too. Don’t try sarcasm or jokes with people you don’t actually know, it tends to go over poorly. Unless someone’s specifically posting a naughty meme/prompt, keep stuff you others send clean and polite, especially if it’s unsolicited and you’re not already friends (doubly so if you don’t know how old they are IRL, there are laws you do not want to break). Respect if people aren’t open to random asks or chatting with new followers, or say “no” to RP, and know it’s not personal--it’s just what they have time, energy, and emotional/mental capacity for. Don’t give up on other people, though. This stuff can take time and effort to find those you click with.

Respect and communication with RP partners is pretty key.

Do curate your feeds and don’t be afraid to unfollow/mute/block folks, either. I’m selective in who I follow and remove as needed, too, for my own mental health. I miss so much of the discourse and drama and that’s fine by me. Also it costs nothing to not step in on a lot of the drama when it does pass in sight.

Profiles I have static RP profile pages for my girls here on Tumblr (and a lot of other static links and pages, but I’m weird about organizing like that). This way, if people want to write with me, send me prompts, if I sent them prompts, or they want to otherwise interact with my characters, the information is handily available. For some folks, this makes all the difference in who they choose to interact with: how easily can they find even basic info about your OC?

Some people make Carrds. Some folks have gdoc links, or use Dreamwidth, etc. Just keep the links in the blog’s sidebar menu, and/or in the blog desc so people can see ‘em on mobile. There are templates out there, or you can make your own. Feel free to snag mine if you’d like. A lot of times people also copy their profiles to rebloggable posts when looking for RP contacts. Profiles are a good way to let folks know just the at-a-glance basics about your character(s).

I picked a simple theme with a simple layout that makes it easy to add and show off links. I put them in the blog desc to make them easy to find on mobile, too.

RP, Stories, Lore Post some stories or RP logs (with permission of others involved) or even just random little blurbs and headcanons, as well as any screenshots, art, aesthetic posts for your OCs. Have something of interest to show for your character, too, so some of those folks your interacting with have something of their own to see and ask about!

If possible, try some light RP with friends and FC Mates who are amenable. Go to events, even if just to lurk at first. When you do get up the nerve to talk to people, don’t try to throw a character’s entire backstory at them, or try to steal the limelight--RP is collaboration, back and forth, and a lot like real conversation. Maybe come up with little light things to talk about if asked; a recent adventuring job, a silly shopping incident, etc. They can break the ice or just give you something to reply with for a few minutes.

Lore Compliance is Variable. Some people really want lore compliance, others are OK bending it here and there, while still others throw it out the window entirely. If you want to be super lore compliant...read. There’s a LOT of information, in game and out, for finding lore; from official publications and website material, to tools like Garland Tools site, to compilation blogs like @mirkemenagerie.

Note what’s important for your concept. Narrow it down. Characters aren’t going to know or be or do everything, so only worry about what’s necessary for the base idea. And be flexible; it’s SE’s sandbox, we just play in it, and they can change things any time. They usually do it in the guise of characters not knowing/having all the correct information, at least, but also some places just don’t exist in game yet so we don’t have info.

I’m unspecific about a lot of elements of Aeryn’s childhood, for instance, other than “traveling merchants near Thavnair.” I don’t have to be super specific. I can keep most details vague, and focus on her family and those relationships.

Dark, as my first character, has a fairly simple backstory that I’ve expanded on and adjusted over time as I learned and came up with new info. I also bet no one remembers I originally said Dark was from the North Shroud. I’ve changed things (now from East Shroud, due to the proximity to Gyr Abania and its Hellsguards) as I learned more about the world and my character. You don’t want to change things willy-nilly, but sometimes being flexible and smoothing down some rough edges and making small changes can be fine, especially as one gets more lore over time.

Iyna has a pretty detailed backstory, that came from a basic idea, and checking dates in the pre-Calamity timeline. I based her being taken and trained the way she was not only on what info we have about Garlemald’s imperial practices with conquered provinces, but borrowed a bit from real life and the re-education schools many Native Americans were forced into (though I haven’t gone into detail on that yet, either). I tied the turning point in Iyna’s life to a major event that wasn’t the Calamity, and have left plenty of space in between for me to fill in as time goes on and I learn more about her and the world.

The world isn’t static, and is bigger and more diverse than what can be shown in the game. There’s space in the margins for plenty of weird stuff and contradictions or unusual cases. So read up on what you can, ask questions, and then find where in those spaces your OC fits. Then, find people who enjoy similar tastes in lore compliance (or non-compliance), and who enjoy playing with you and your OCs, and not worrying about the rest. Can’t please everyone, nor get along with everyone, so don’t try; just find what works for you, and who works with you, and don’t police anyone else’s pretendy fun times, either.

There’s no magic answer on the “right” amount of lore compliance, or how to quickly and easily find RP partners or break into the broader RP community.
