New ways to strengthen biomimetic spider-silk
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have found that spiders have a special trick to make their silk strong, by using a natural biocompatible molecular enhancer. By using the same secret the researchers are able to create biomimetic spider-silk fibers in a non-toxic way. The study is published in Advanced Functional Materials. Spider silk is known for being a strong and environmentally friendly material, while biomimetic spider silk-like fibers currently fall short in terms of mechanical performance. One strategy to increase the mechanical strength of biomimetic spider silk-like fibers is by introducing amyloid-forming motifs (fibrillar protein assembles) into spider silk proteins (spidroins). However, it is then important to note that amyloid fibrils are inherently toxic, e.g., silk nanofibrils derived from cocoons, potentially associated with various diseases.

Protein and fiber-focused breakfasts are ideal for blood sugar balance, hormone health, mental health (anxiety), gut health, and weight loss. Here are a few ideas for you that I’ve been enjoying as of late. Friendly reminder: You can eat breakfast for dinner too! 🥭🫐🍌🫑🍳🍠
NOTE: I used gluten-free sprouted bread for the PB-banana toast.

Why is it so expensive to have a fun low cholesterol diet :( like half the recipes u can find online are like, you should eat a lot of [one of the most expensive types of fishes] and [very expensive fruits and veggies] or [vegan alternatives to meat that are also very expensive and also often hard to find] !!!!!!! Helpppppp.....

just saw a good point in the comments of a lifehacker post i got to by googling whether you can microwave cherry tomatoes, which basically boiled down to: the microwave is not good for making food that is amazing, but it’s great for making food that is….. Fine. for dinner i had brown rice that comes in a pouch (microwave) with steam in bag Mixed Veggies (microwave) cherry tomatoes (i sliced them in half because i was feeling adventurous and then after consulting google: microwave) and a pair of fried eggs (stove for like 5 minutes). i put in a bunch of butter and a metric ton of salt and some fucking hot sauce because i have the palate of an unsophisticated teenager. i ate a scoop of cottage cheese as my Treat and also for extra fat & protein. dessert was as it is every night magnesium gummies. was it amazing? no. would i ever serve this to anyone else? absolutely not. am i a little embarrassed, describing this meal in public? sure. but most importantly/ for me as a person who hates the kitchen and has dysfunctional executives, was it…. Fine? you fuckin bet!

One day I was making Korean corn cheese and thought “I could put beans in this and it would be a fire dip.”
Thus the Cowboy Corn Cheese was born 🫡🌽
It’s a bag of frozen corn, rice vinegar (the flavored kind for sushi), kewpie mayo, shredded white cheddar cheese, and a can of beans (black, pink, whatever you have on hand)
I like heating the corn first in the microwave, then doing the vinegar + mayo sauce until you get it to a consistency you like. Mix in your cheese and rinsed beans and microwave it until the mix is bubbling (3 minutes? You can test with your microwave)
I like eating these with the quinoa and black bean chips from trader joes 🤤

How do you make rice and lentils? I’m curious 👀
it's a super basic recipe i have to say, im a very lazy cook and i operate on low effort high reward mode as much as possible. im also an insanely autistic picky eater with a bunch of digestive issues and i struggle a LOT with food, so it's very important for me to have this as a decently healthy, nutritious, very tasty and easy to make meal that i know im going to be able to eat with no problems.
after boiling my rice for 10-13 minutes until it's nice and fluffy, i get a box of those pre-boiled red lentils from the grocery store, drain most of the liquid and stir them in a pot on medium heat until the remaining liquid has reduced: i then add seasoning to my liking (i just put a bunch of salt, pepper and turmeric and a dash of curry since i don't have a lot of spices or seasonings, but it's very customizable) and a generous amount of olive oil, which i keep stirring until it has reduced and is almost entirely dry while still retaining a bit of the oil's moisture (i prefer a drier consistency, but this is totally up to you how much you want to reduce the oil). i plate them side by side and mix the rice with the lentils one bite at a time, again on account of The Autism.
if you want to get fancy and more nutritional you can probably add some garlic and boiled vegetables to the lentils, but im not a fan of garlic and i prefer to eat vegetables raw, so for example instead of dicing a carrot and adding it to the pot while it's boiling i just snack on one while i cook the rice and get the same nutritional value with a more pleasant experience — but yeah, it's a super fuck-around-friendly recipe both for a total noob like me and for someone who's an honest to god good cook.

Scientists have long been intrigued by the remarkable properties of spider silk, which is stronger than steel yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. Now, Fuzhong Zhang, a professor of energy, environmental and chemical engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, has made a significant breakthrough in the fabrication of synthetic spider silk, paving the way for a new era of sustainable clothing production.
Since engineering recombinant spider silk in 2018 using bacteria, Zhang has been working to increase the yield of silk threads produced from microbes while maintaining its desirable properties of enhanced strength and toughness.
Higher yields will be critical if synthetic silk is to be used in everyday applications, particularly in the fashion industry where renewable materials are much in demand to stem the environmental impacts that come from producing an estimated 100 billion garments and 92 million tons of waste each year.
With the help of an engineered mussel foot protein, Zhang has created new spider silk fusion proteins, called bi-terminal Mfp fused silks (btMSilks). Microbial production of btMSilks have eightfold higher yields than recombinant silk proteins, and the btMSilk fibers have substantially improved strength and toughness while being lightweight. This could revolutionize clothing manufacturing by providing a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional textiles. The findings were published April 14 in Nature Communications.

something that only now that i have experience in that field pisses me off so much about hp is the fucking parchment use. it's been said before how annoying parchment is to use and how many animals would be needed to make that mich parchment but also a scottish castle is a high moisture environment which is at least good for the material but will also leave absolutely everything smelling like wet goat/sheep
