need music recommendations. not to be weirdly personal about my brain problems but a super specific intrusive thought is keeping me from seeking out new music on my own. i'm really into psychadelic pop, prog rock, folk rock, medieval folk rock, and indie rock but i partake in most genres so please lemme know any albums you think i'd like

One of the things that makes Speak Now so special is it's such a diverse album in terms of style and yet it definitely has a cohesive sound and identity at the same time.
Like it has songs that are Debut levels of country, it has songs that are heavily pop punk, it has a melodic rock song, it has songs that are poppy, some psychadelic rock vibes in I Can See You, and even some songs that hint at the indie-folk sound she'll later embrace in folklore. The songs are so different and yet still all so completely Speak Now.
I feel like after this she really dug in hard with the idea that an album should be "sonically cohesive" and still explored different sounds, but didn't allow for nearly as much range and diversity in terms of sound and genre within a single album.

what kind of music do u make! 🌟✨
aaahhhhh i'm flattered that anyone cares enough to ask!! i'll preface this with the fact that i haven't really written or played much since 2019, but when i was actively making music it was very indie rock with some psychadelic/surf rock elements. i mostly wrote with my friends' bands or guys that i dated. i was always "allowed" to write with them or fill in if they needed a guitarist or a bassist but they never considered me as part of the band and it felt so discouraging. even when i was in college studying audio engineering it was very much a boys club and they made it apparent that i was not a colleague to them. when i dropped out, i completely stopped writing and playing. i didn't have the motivation or even the time because i was working two jobs. i'd also moved to a whole different state right before the pandemic hit and i didn't get to explore the local music scene. however, i've been thinking about getting back into writing/playing. my music taste has changed a bit since the last time i wrote and lately i've been really into the 60s folk-country-rock sound.

do you know any twee pop or indie rock or pop groups or songs that are lgbt? specifically gay or trans...
sorry i couldnt find that much, its pretty hard finding info abt most twee pop bands out there... but i do have a few recs! its mostly dream pop/indie pop, i think lgbt artists r really common in those genres so i’d recommend looking for playlists of those genres. also a lot of riot grrrl bands have lgbt themes, but i havent totally gotten into the scene yet so i dont have any specific recs. also if anybody has other recommendations i didnt mention leave em in the replies!
i couldnt find much info abt lgbt twee pop bands but i do know a few songs! this love is fucking right! by the pains of being pure at heart is a reference to the field mice’s this love is not wrong, which are both about wlw relationships. cub also made 2 songs about flirting with women, surfer girl (i think this ones a cover of a beach boys song but idk i dont listen to the beach boys) and sweet pea. they might have more songs like it but i’ve only really listened to their first album. i’ll also include of montreal’s tim i wish you were born a girl and when a man is in love with a man, even tho i dont consider them a twee pop band currently their early stuff is very twee. also i’d recommend their album the gay parade, though it doesnt have much lgbt themes outside of the title
heres a list of bands i found with lgbt members too, some i’ve listened to a lot and some i only like a couple songs from:
adult mom (dream/indie pop) Stevie Knipe [nonbinary lesbian]
jay som (dream pop/indie rock) Melina Mae Duterte [queer]
passion pit (synth pop) Michael Angelakos [bisexual]
xiu xiu (experimental noise/art pop) Jamie Stewart [bisexual]
the music tapes (indie/psychadelic folk) Julian Koster [self described as not-straight] Julian was also associated with neutral milk hotel & major organ and the adding machine and helped form the band chocolate usa
girlpool (lofi indie) Avery Tucker [transgender]
girl in red (indie/bedroom pop) Marie Ulven [wlw/queer] Marie has explicit wlw songs like we fell in love in october but i couldnt find out if she uses a specific label
car seat headrest (indie rock) Will Toledo [gay]
franz ferdinand [indie/dance rock] now i could have sworn there was an article about the lead singer Alex Kapranos coming out as bisexual but i cannot find it anywhere... but listen to michael its THE homoerotic dance rock song.

I was tagged by @ifishouldvanish to share 9 albums I’ve been listening to lately 🥰. Thanks a lot! The Spell by Cellar Darling | They are a Swiss progressive/folk metal band who relased their second album this year and I was enamored immediately after falling in love with their first one last year. It’s a concept album and I simply love the narrative (a girl falling in love with death) and how it is structured/implemented. I love its complexity and apparent contradictions: soft parts followed by heavier ones, the use of classical and folk elements, and I’m just a huge fan of Anna’s voice and could listen to her all the time. My absolute favorite piece would probably be Fall, (which I had to put on my Ineffable Husbands playlist ofc), which stands out because it is much shorter than the rest of the songs and uses a very different style, sounding almost ethereal…and I’m so in love with it. The entire album is an interesting and beautiful piece of art imo. It was described as a dark fairy tale by critics and that’s exactly what it sounds like.
The Sticks by Mother Mother | Mother Mother are what the kids call a mood (they probably don’t use that term anymore but oh well). Mostly upbeat music with much darker and sometimes very funny, sarcastic lyrics? If I were a song, I’d probably be one by Mother Mother. I love this album because it’s one of my go-tos when I want some nice background music for working on things. And I mean that in the best way possible: it’s really motivational without being too distracting, if that makes sense? It’s such a nice indie rock album which perfectly captures the notion of wanting to retreat into a remote forest and stay there for a couple of months? (While you don’t do that, ofc, and instead choose to pretend-smile through it all.) Also, Dread in My Heart will probably be my personal theme song for forever. (Little Pistol is my favorite. Closely followed by Infinitesimal. It’s such a good album tho.)
Echoes by Pink Floyd | Oh boy, where do I start this with this one? Pink Floyd is one of my all-time favorite bands. Never stood a chance, because the same is true for my parents. So what’s better than to listen to one of their best of albums which contains all the gems? I half-jokingly stated that I want The Great Gig In The Sky to play when I’m on my deathbed, because it stirrs something in me I cannot describe and I legit cry every time I listen to it. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is an experience in itself, Wish You Were Here is a classic ofc (and I use it on nearly every fanmix, whoops), Time throws me right into a midlife crisis and I will forever be soft for Nobody Home (which isn’t on there but deserves an honorary mention). Electra Heart by Marina and the Diamonds | I’ve been a fan of Marina ever since I heard Hollywood for the first time. Well, it’s been more of a gradual process of hearing this song for the first time, thinking “nice” and then forgetting about her until Electra Heart hit the market and found its way into my CD collection. I always gravitate back to Marina at some point, her lyrics are on point, I love her voice, and she expresses this peculiar and particular feeling of temporarily lostness so well? I love all of her albums, but Electra Heart has a special place in my heart, because it was the one that made me fall in love with her (and I’m very glad I did). Black Holes & Revelations by Muse | It’s the sound of my youth. Seriously, I take a trip down memory lane whenever one of their songs comes on. While I don’t listen to them as often as I used to, I still love them a lot and admire their artistry, they are so versatile and never fail to deliver (psychadelic songs and sad ballads on the same album? I love). It’s hard to pick a favorite album, I mostly chose this one to listen to because I was in the mood for it. Masseduction by St. Vincent | She’s been around for some time and I’ve mainly dismissed her music until last year. It’s not that I disliked it, it just wasn’t something I actively tried to get into? Then spotify started to put a few of her songs on my mixes of the week and the rest is history (I was a fool because her music is right up my alley and I should have known). I had Los Ageless on repeat for weeks (the piano version is beautiful as well, with a completely different vibe) and Smoking Section, Happy Birthday Johnny, and New York suffered the same fate. I can’t list them all but I’ve really enjoyed this album. (On a different one, but All My Stars Aligned? Such a beautiful, beautiful song) The Silent Force by Within Temptation | So I’m seeing them live next year (still cannot believe it) and this has sparked a renewed interest in their music. It was never gone, but I need to be in a certain mood to listen to their songs. With Muse I was talking about memory lane, when it comes to Within Temptation it’s more like an express highway. So many memories connected to their music, especially to this album - man that was a wild time (more like metaphorically speaking, it was a pretty dark period in my life, actually). Still, most memories are good ones because they were the first (symphonic) metal band I ever listened to and that opened whole new doors for me. Even after almost 15 years (boy do I feel old), this album has lost nothing of its magic and I love coming back to it. No Need To Argue by The Cranberries | I recently binged Derry Girls and it definitely made an impact in more than one way. Been a fan of the Cranberries for a good chunk of my life and this album is one of my favorites. Like ever. It’s crazy how much memories are connected to music, right? The Virgin Suicides (OST) by Air | First things first, that movie…kinda traumatized me. Is it smart to listen to its soundtrack then? Probably not. I’m not known for smart decisions, so it should not come as a surprise that I do so regardless. Especially because I think it’s a great album. Playground Love is such a good song and the rest of the others do not disappoint either. It has a very weird vibe to it (which perfectly matches the movie), but sometimes that’s what I’m in the mood for. But nothing will ever beat Le Voyage de Pénélope” for me when it comes to Air. I’m gonna tag @mightynott @bogsnails @queenology @aziraphae @regalpotato @thesongandthesunset and everyone else who reads this and wants to do this!

2018 Favourites: Mandie Hailwood
Tumblr media
Top 3 Singles
Liily - Toro I don’t understand why this song only has less than 250k views, when their other single 'Sold' has over a million? It sounds a little like the lovechild of old school rock bands (have a listen, i'll leave you to work out who I mean) - but it still holds to it's own. Someone asked me in August if there was one small band to watch out for, who would it be - and this was my instant answer. That still stands.
The 1975 - Love It If We Made It The day this song came out I may or may not have played it really loudly 5 times straight in my friends car. He hated it. I don't care. I love it. I love The 1975. You can find them on Facebook.
Finn Johansson - Lovebomb I have never ever been so mesmorized watching someone play guitar as I was watching Finn play with Emily Fairlight earlier this year - he truly did become one with his guitar. So I was pretty stoked to realize that he had a whole lot of other great tracks up his sleeve. Something about this song just slowly unclicks all the anxious nerves in my body. I can't explain it. (see also: ‘Why Can't I Fly’)
Top 3 EP’s
Matt Maeson - The Hearse You know those songs that just come at you right when you need them? That's how I felt when this little alt/indie gem of an EP came out - especially as i’d been spinning ‘Hallucinogenics’ for nearly a month straight prior. The way that this raw little collection of songs builds? Both musically and personally? Damn. If you know, you know.
Fairhazel - 7x7 At first I was unsure about whether I could call a two song release an 'EP' - but that opening verse of ‘7x7′ will forever be the soundtrack to my life. Also fun fact: ‘The Directors Daughter’ was written whilst in a sensory deprivation tank in London - Hugh repeated the lyrics to himself for a whole hour so that he wouldn't forget them before he could write them out.
You On Television - You On Television I've lost count of how many times i've listened to this psychadelic stoner little number since catching them opening for The Leers earlier this year - but boy. Every single time is as much a treat as the first. Even in the middle of winter, this had me grooving and dreaming of blazey summer days.
Top 3 Albums
Liza Anne - Fine But Dying My first love of the year. This ethereal indie folk album hits every single nerve that it needs to, and not a single person I sent it to said they didn’t like it. It reads a little like a series of poetic diary entries, and if you have a look at Liza Anne’s website - each song has a little hidden meaning in there which she’s left for you to decode. Thank you Liza for this little gem, it’s helped to keep me sane this year. Top picks - ‘I Love You But I Need Another Year’, ‘Paranoia’, and ‘Panic Attack’
Marlon Williams - Make Way For Love Does Marlon even need an introduction these days? I'll never forget being sent to The Tuning Fork to photograph him in 2014. I had no clue who he was, nor what I was in for, and as he introduced himself with his rugged young South Island accent, I was more than a little unsure - but the moment he started singing? You could've heard a pin drop in that room, and boy, i've never judged a someone by the way they talk since. It's no surprise that the rest of the world have been snapping him up. He's about to set off on a NZ wide tour next month, so if you haven't got your tickets yet - what are you waiting for? Top picks - ‘Can I Call You’, ‘Nobody Gets What They Want’, and ‘Party Boy’
Palaye Royale - Boom Boom Room (Side B) It's like My Chemical Romance and Arctic Monkeys had a baby and i'm definitely here for it. Possibly the least hyped up gig of the year - but also simultaneously one of my favourite live acts i've witnessed this year? Will the emo kid inside of me ever die? Stay tuned. Top picks - ‘Death Dance’, ‘You'll Be Fine’, and ‘Love The Void’
Special Mention
The Story So Far - Proper Dose After a bit of a hiatus - I had already come to terms with the thought that maybe, The Story So Far just weren't coming back. So you can imagine my delight when they released ‘Out Of It’ and started teasing for a new album - plus they pulled through and released something truly magnificent. All the grief and waiting was definitely worth it in the end. I could easily write an essay about it, but i'm not about that life. So just go and fucking listen to it (also read this interview Parker Cannon did with Kerrang! to get a glimpse of what was going on behind the scenes) Top picks - 'Proper Dose’, ‘Take Me As You Please’, and ‘Upside Down’
I made a playlist of my top 10 songs on Spotify - have a listen, you might find a new favourite!
Quick Fire
One band I would love to photograph would be... Arctic Monkeys
Three things I can't live without are... Adventures in nature, something to take photos with, and music.
If I could only shoot one venue for the rest of my life it would be... Galatos Basement. I love floor shows and also those walls create for some hella interesting backdrops.
Three adjectives that describe my life are... Ironic. Magical. Surprising.
If I held a world record it would be for... Changing my hair colour the most times but always keeping it pink.
My first memory of loving music is... Taping my favourite songs off the radio and hiding them inside Christian cassette tapes.
One photo i'm really proud of is...
Tumblr media
One band I could listen to forever is... My Chemical Romance.
My biggest musical guilty pleasure is... There’s this playlist called 'One Direction All Songs' and it bangs.
If I could create a line-up ft. any three bands it would be... The Story So Far, Manchester Orchestra, and also let's revive The Academy Is... while we're at it.
