In the UK Sonic comic, Sonic transforms into Super after exposure to large amounts of chaos energy or in times of great stress. Super is a violent, chaotic monster that destroys everything and everyone he sees until he loses power and reverts back to Sonic. Halfway through the comic, Super and Sonic are physically separated. Super then loses his powers and--briefly--his memories, becoming a nice little guy who wanders Metropolis Zone getting adopted by sweet old ladies. This includes Ebony the Mystic Mog (a witch/sorceres) and Pyjamas the Psychic. They take him in as family and give him a job at Ebony's coffee bar The Groovy Train. As Super's chaos energy fades, he starts dying. Ebony takes him to find the Chaos Emeralds to heal him, but runs into the Sonic Adventure 1 plot. Super absorb's Chaos' energy and becomes evil again, until Ebony seals him away in Sonic's body.

Hopefully some of that was apparent already! The only changes I've made to canon before this point is letting Super choose a new name as Fleet :)

Todd Haynes on Mandy Slade

OM: How did you come to cast Toni Collette as Mandy? She doesn't strike me as an obvious choice for the role as it is written; her most famous part was in Muriel's Wedding where she played the podgy, Abba-obsessed ultra-hetero outcast.

TH: Mandy was the hardest part to cast in the film. It's a particularly demanding role due to the range Mandy has to display as she changes from the seventies to the eighties. This type of camp female character has basically vanished from our cultural landscape, as far as I can tell. The closest equivalent today is probably a Parker Posey-type character, but she's still quite different from the Liza Minnelli of Cabaret or the Angela Bowie of the glam era. Mandy has a theatrical, campy party girl persona that can be turned on and off at will, and owes a great deal to the gay male sensibility of the time. I think women around the world were liberated from all kinds of highly codified notions of femininity when people like Patti Smith entered the pop cultural arena. It had such a profound effect on women but girls today have no memory of that kind of camp femininity.

I saw so many strong actresses for Mandy, both in the US and the UK, and it was really tough to find the right one. We came close a few times, but it wasn't until I met Toni that it all clicked. I had no doubt about her acting ability, but the question was how to transform Toni Collette psychically, both for the camera and in her own self-regard into this very different, very confident, overly sexual creature. She really had to go off the cliff; I'm sure it was terrifying. And what you see in the film is such a transformation, such a complete commitment to the role that she almost becomes unrecognizable as Muriel in Muriel's Wedding. After a certain point, nothing was too scary for Toni. What you get with the character is what you get with the actress playing her - this range of changes and the effects of various cultures and various experiences on one extraordinary woman.

OM: Although the script informs you of Mandy being an American bisexual who reinvented herself, you get the sense of invention fully in the scene where she presents Brian with the divorce papers. She breaks down and you see the façade in a seventies context. It's a very moving moment and it's contrasted with Brian's coked-up emptiness. What did you discover in your research about the 'back-stage' women of the glam era?

TH: I guess Mandy's basic expression of real needs is made more vivid by that scene, but the beaten-down, hard-boiled Mandy of the eighties gives you the framework for that. She was definitely one of those people who was feeling and hurting and acting out at the same time. Often the casualties were the women of the male rock world. I really feel the film builds and develops complex sympathies for Mandy that you won't necessarily feel going in. The character is loosely inspired by aspects of Angela Bowie, and it's very easy to make fun of that kind of pop creature after the fact. But in all the books I read there was no argument on how fundamentally essential Angela Bowie was to the invention of Ziggy Stardust and to glam rock in general. She inspired risk-taking and flamboyance to a degree no one else can claim credit for. It wouldn't have happened without her.

ok i just looked back through my blog and it looks like my big theory from way back last year has just… disappeared?? which i’m pretty annoyed about tbh, but i want to expand on it and update it anyway because the casting announcement and logo all validate it and make it a lot more interesting SO

my big magnus protocol theory and what i think the plot will be

so, this is a world completely without the Fears, until BAM. here they are. and with the arg, the encrypted messages and the glitchy aesthetic they seem to be going for, now further expanded on by the logo literally being a glitchy computer screen, i was thinking what if as the fears entered the universe, there was some kind of mass signal or energy surge.

imagine all the screens and electronics in the world suddenly go static, and a jumbled-up incomprehensible message (like the “statement remains” audio) can be heard everywhere, all around the world. and it goes on for around 20-30 minutes. and in those minutes, every single person in the world is fucking TERRIFIED. just frozen in absolute fear.

and of course this causes thousands and thousands of accidents and deaths and just generally terrifies everyone, so naturally every world government thinks it’s an attack of some kind. hence why we follow civil service workers, specifically those working for Incident Assessment and Response. this would be quite an incident!!

in these first few episodes following the signal, we also hear from the prime minister. and i originally thought it would be REALLY fun if the uk prime minister in this universe is the og Elias. i love this idea with all my heart for many reasons, but it doesn’t look like ben meredith will be in it, so i’ve had to modify it a bit. so, either the prime minister will be gwendolyn bouchard, who could either be a relative of elias or transfem elias (although, trans prime minister?? in this godforsaken country??) OR the tim fearon character, who could potentially be jonah magnus or a similar previously established character. but personally, i’m betting on miss gwendolyn, so keep that in mind as you read the rest of this.

and so at the end of the first or second episode, we hear this prime minister in a big meeting about the incident, and the episode ends on a cliffhanger that reveals what the unscrambled audio really was.

it’s mag 200. which is why jon and martin are (potentially) on the cast list. the fears are ushered into the universe using their voices.

but i think what would be an even cooler cliffhanger is if after this big reveal, after the tape squeals and basira says good luck, we hear something we’ve never heard before.

“oh, hello. are you still listening?”

tim fearon’s voice.

so this is where the REDACTED names really come into play. idk what the actual plot will be, but my idea is that jon, martin, and the tim fearon character, who i personally think is the voice of the original jonah magnus, are:

1, stuck as “ghosts in the machine” of sorts, living on as disembodied glitchy voices and nothing more

2, are huge eldritch entities, who can speak through anything and anyone, maybe possess people, etc, and possibly act as similar entities to the fears in a way, creating their own avatars and suchlike - maybe to fight the fears in jon and martin’s cases

or 3, the fears use their voices to actually speak, probably through recordings and electronics, meaning the REDACTED isn’t just to conceal their characters, they actually just don’t have names

also this is a much smaller point but because her name and presumed age are so out of place in comparison to the rest of the cast, i think lady mowbray is a psychic or mystic woman of some kind rather than an actual noble woman, and will be able to talk to the new jon and martin, whatever they are

so yeah that’s it i guess! i hope all this makes sense, if anyone has any questions, anything to add or challenge, or just want to discuss it please please do!! i want to see what people think of this in light of all the new information because i LOVE this idea so much that if it doesn’t happen i might just write it myself lol

what games do you play in spanish?

As of right now, primarily Baldur's Gate 3 in Spanish and a few other games - it's usually English dub, but because I switched my console to Spanish language, the Spanish subtitles/language options are the default (assuming they have the option)

Like I have the Kingdom Hearts collection and for whatever reason Spanish is not an option so it's all English. But then a few games like Dragon Age or Mass Effect have the option to change your language [and many computer games have language options as well; I was playing Civilization 6 in Spanish but there were so many proper names, names of cities, and specific things that are translated that I could not figure out how to look up what something did properly, so it was a bit of a trial by fire]

If you have a Nintendo Switch or something like that, you can often choose the language right before the game starts - that's how it was for Pokemon games in my experience

A lot of newer games come directly with the option and if you have a newer console they often change based on your language settings on the system itself. I forget that I'm playing in Spanish until I come upon some codex entry or something that's translated in Spanish and it's a main plot point so I'm like oh no what is that supposed to be in English

As an example, I was playing Baldur's Gate 3 and they translated the word for "hag" as la saga

That's not a terrible translation - "hag" in English typically makes you think of anciana or maybe bruja for "old lady" and "witch" but that doesn't 100% match what they were trying for [also brujo / bruja is how they translate "warlock" class which is historically correct but a bit confusing sometimes]

And I'm wracking my brain because to me la saga is a "saga" like a story... and then I remember, la saga is sometimes translated as like "witchdoctor", it means something like "wise woman" but it's sort of like a woman that says she knows magic but she might have ulterior motives? You can use that to describe people that give you psychic readings, that sort of magic/illusionist sort of thing

So it finally clicked that they were trying to translate "hag" in a way that didn't sound like you were talking about some old person, but someone who is magical in nature and understood to be greedy and negative in a way

Anyway, I usually play RPGs or longer story games that give me lots of chances to read and learn new words

I tried Assassin's Creed in Spanish but there were sometimes very particular nouns that I had never seen before because they're more... like tools or specialized things; like never in my life have I used the word azuela or "adze" so my brain is like "is that a kind of fish hook? [anzuelo]"

...Anyway you learn a lot, sometimes really specific vocabulary

I also notice some translation errors here and there that warm my heart because it's not usually the translator's fault

[As an example, I was playing this game and one character was papi "daddy" and the other was listed as momia and I'm confused until I realize it was probably "mummy" the way UK English says "mommy", so in a game with fantastical creatures they saw "mummy" and thought well it might be an actual "mummy" like una momia egipcia "Egyptian mummy", but really how would they know it should be mami not momia unless they saw the whole context?]

Sensationalist junk. Completely made up.

If you don't know, there is a certain Spanish reporter who is claiming that Kate was actually in a coma during her hospitalization. I didn't read the stories about it, just scrolled a few headlines, so I don't know if there's more to the reporter's claims. There also is a psychic medium that's going around claiming Kate was/is in a coma but I don't know if that's related - I first heard about the psychic's claims when a couple other psychic mediums came out slamming her for unethical behavior with those allegations of Kate's health.

The biggest indicator that someone is onto something is the reaction in mainstream British press, including the tabloids. If there was any truth to it, the UK media would have picked it up (either to investigate or to debunk, like we saw with the affair rumor back in 2019) and there would be an equal effort from the palace, either to bury it or do damage control. From the UK media, we would see wall-to-wall coverage from UK journalists. From the palace, they would have responded in one of their usual ways:

A new photo of Kate, most likely with the children - it would be presented as either "could she be playing with her kids if she was in a coma?" or "oof, we fucked up. A sympathetic article sourced by palace insiders and the Waleses' friends about how hard this time has been for William and the children. But none of that happened. No palace reaction, no Fleet Street coverage. That suggests it's so patently untrue that it's not worth the ink or memory to write about. And not even other countries have picked it up, which is also telling, considering how much Kate's comings, goings, and fashion is covered around the globe.

Like many have said/are saying, we won't know what Kate's issue is until she wants to tell us. But if there ever was a time Kate would tell us what happened or what her diagnosis was, it would most likely be if she picks up a new charity or a patronage connected to it, since we know William and Kate prefer to champion causes that they have personal connections to.
