feel like when ppl talk about the xreader community, they very desperately want to keep the genre and its writers in a box of what they believe it to be. and they can’t fathom that the style of xreader by nature uses certain literary devices (specifically the second person perspective) to tell its story as a way to be immersive. like yeah whatever we can argue about the semantics of an OC vs a reader-insert forever but at the end of the day, if i put my OC fanfic in second person perspective, doesn’t it then become xreader? because of the nature of the genre and the devices it’s using? i think some folks think of these fanfic genres very narrowly and only through the lens of fandom and not of writing as a craft (which predates fanfic genre you know?)—and writing itself uses literary and storytelling devices, which we can then categorize into genres if we see them repeated in certain ways.

She wasnt initially going to be a time traveller, my first and only idea for her was just her being an artist, no relations, no connections, honestly no story either, I had no plans to write for Turn, just thoughts of kissing the beagle boy. But during my hundredth rewatch of the show, I realized just how perfect Mulligan's tailor shop would be for an OC to lurk and it was like my third eye opened.

As someone who's never written fanfiction before, this OC is a first of mine to actually be more than just a vague post before being sent into oblivion once a hyperfixation ended. I've been into Amrev content since elementary school, it ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

So it really was the second I saw that cunty ginger man's curls bouncing down the street in the worst color combo I've ever seen (that he somehow pulled off) and messing with Townsend, that made me go "Hold up?" And then the interrogation scene happened in all its glory and I was just eating up the sass. It led me to do some research on the man and find out he is actually fully a man of chaos (after my own heart). He's literally documented as a yapper and that his yapping is how he avoided being properly charged for shit he was blatantly doing. So I literally had no choice but to completely shift everything to find a way to write him into a story.

So he really was a trigger point for expanding on her and fleshing her out.

I'm like, 90% sure that the time traveling concept came from me thinking of him as a cringe dad using his kid's slang wrong and I thought it was funny.

The story isn't even about him but he's the reason behind so much of my decision making.

He was just meant to be a girl dad you guys. He literally gave birth to her, carried her all nine months, I was there.

Hmm... I wish I had better advice to give you on this front, but honestly, the only thing I can tell you is to consider the perspective of your female characters.

Women are people. They have thoughts and feelings of their own, so like... just let them have their own arcs. A lot of the worst misogyny in WC comes from the way that the writers just don't care about their girls (or, in the case of tall shadow, actually get undermined and forced to rewrite entire chapters), so they're not curious about their lives, or WHY they feel the way they do or what they want, or any direction for their character arcs.

Turtle Tail as an example. She'll often just end up feeling whatever Gray Wing's plot demands. She's gotta leave when Storm dumps him to make him feel lonely. She shows up again to love him in the next book. Lets her best friend Bumble get dragged back to Tom the Wifebeater, but is sad enough about her death to be "unreasonably angry" with Clear Sky, and then calms down and accept Gray Wing is right all along.

And then she dies, so he can have his very own fridge wife.

In this way, Turtle Tail's just being used to tell Gray Wing's story. They're not interested in why she would turn on Bumble, or god forbid any lingering negative feelings for how she didn't help her, or even resentment towards Clear Sky for killing her or Gray Wing for jumping to his defense. She isn't really going through her own character arc.

She does have personality traits of her own, don't misunderstand my criticism, but as a character she revolves around Gray Wing.

So, zoom out every now and then, and just ask yourself; "Whose story is being told by what I wrote? Do my female characters have goals, wants, and agency, or are they just supporting men? How do their choices impact the narrative?"

But that's already kinda assuming that you already have characters like Turtle Tail who DO have personalities and potential of their own. Here's some super simple and practical advice that helped me;

Tally the genders in your cast. How many are boys, how many are girls, how many are others?

And take stock of how many of those characters are just in the supporting cast, and compare that to the amount you have in the main cast.

If you have a significant imbalance, ESPECIALLY in the main cast, fire the Woman Beam.

It's a really simple trick to just write a male character, and then change its gender while keeping it the same. I promise women are really not fundamentally different from men lmao. You can consider how your in-universe gender roles affect them later, if you'd like, but when you're just starting to wean yourself off a "boy bias" this trick works like a charm.

Also you're not allowed to change the body type of any girl you Woman Beam because I said so. PLEASE allow your girls to have muscles, or be fat, or be old, or have lots of scars. Do NOT do what a cowardly Triple A studio does, where the women all have the same cute or sexy face and curvy body while they're standing next to dwarves, robots, and a gorilla.

If you do this I will GET you. If you're ever possessed by the dark urge, you will see my face appear in the clouds like Mufasa himself to guide you away from the path of evil.

Anyway, you get better at just making characters girls to begin with as time goes on and you practice it. It's really not as big of a deal as your brain might think it is.

Take a legitimate interest in female characters and try not to disproportionately hit them with parental/romance plots as opposed to the male cast, and you'll be fine. Don't think of them as "SPECIAL WOMEN CHARACTERS" just make a character and then let her be a girl, occasionally checking your tally and doing some critical thinking about their use in the story.

(Also remember I'm not a professional or anything, I'm just trying to give advice)

Hi! Thank you so much for asking me about this, because it's true that I do feel anxious if I see someone whose OC is very similar to mine/has obviously taken inspiration from me/my art, as my characters are really personal to me and it's a bit uncomfortable to see it imitated.

Ultimately, I don't wanna give guidelines on what you can or can't do as a creative— taking inspiration from others is a normal part of being an artist! But if you feel that your OC draws inspiration from mine in a way that might make them mistakable for each other, publicly crediting me as inspiration would be nice 🙇🙇🙇!

(This also applies to things like studying my work or art style!)

Alright, let's get to it. Some of this is published, and some is still WIPs. This was an interesting challenge!

Itch

The connection between them snaps into place all the quicker this time. He can feel what she feels now through the Weave that hums pleasantly about them. Hot, itchy, bone-achingly exhausted - like pins and needles cover the surface of her skin and her teeth are too tight in her mouth. A veritable riot of discomfort, and the orb in his chest throbs a painful concord. Gale breathes through the ache, willing his own mastery of peace under duress to flow between them.

Shudder

“Take heart, Tav. We're here for you,” Gale adds earnestly, reaching out to squeeze one of her shoulders. Tav looses a shuddering breath, then a soft moaning cry falls from her lips and her arms slack, dropping her blades with a resounding clatter against the stone. When she goes limp, Gale catches her around the waist. Gale shushes against her hair, lowering them both slowly (ignoring the protesting pops of his knees) until he cradles her gently. Tav cries, more softly now, and turns her face into his chest and clutches onto his robes with white knuckles.

"Please, Miri.." He moans. "I can't... I need--" He loses his words as he feels his trousers being removed, his hands trembling. "You've done so well, my heart," Miri praises as he slides his trousers and briefs free, tossing them aside. "I love hearing you speak in my tongue - it sounds so good on your lips." Miri presses a kiss to his bare knee, working her way slowly up his thigh. As she speaks, her elvish flows like a river and sounds like a song. Enchanting and alluring as her dark gaze holds his. "How can I reward you for being so good? What would my heart ask of me in return for filling my cup to overflowing?"

Hope

After last night, he feels a stronger pull than ever to go to her. Be there for her. Be something to her. Yet, after this morning’s arguments snapping them so quickly back to their usual routine, it’s hard not to feel whiplash. He’d hoped they had finally gotten past their bitterness and bickering. Wants for that to be true. Wants her, gods be damned. “Are…” he pauses for a moment before continuing. Those green eyes move up to his at the sound of his voice. For a moment, it steals his breath away. But he clears his throat, his tone much gentler than before as he inquires, “Are you okay?” "I'm fine," Miri replies shortly.

Embrace

He groans against her mouth, eagerly pressing his lips into hers in a hungry kiss. He closes his eyes, letting her control the speed and depth. Gale allows Miri to set the tone, and set it she does. Even when it borders on devouring. He lets himself be taken, wanting nothing more in that moment than to be hers. Miri pulls back with a grin, admiring the flushed bliss of his expression. He nearly whimpers as she suddenly pulls away, his body left aching with longing for her embrace. "Goodnight, Gale. See you at council in the morning." With a final gentle stroke of her hand along his cheek, she turns on her heel and strides from the room.

A Nohrian commoner whose known the kingdom's southern mountain range and neighbouring valleys her entire life, Lorah was a recognizable resident of her town even though she kept to herself. Learning the basics of herbal remedies from a young age, she would split her time between tending to the fields and easing the woes of the sick. In adulthood, she would chance upon meeting a Nohrian Great Knight during her town's annual spring festival. The couple's engagement, after seven years of courting, had become one of the most highly anticipated moments amongst the townsfolk.

*NOT the Nohrian Queen. I named their kid before I realized what Xander's mom's name was and by that point I was already ATTACHED (tell me Caterpillar is not the cutest nickname). So now the reason they share a name is lore relevant (which is a part of this fic!).
