Me: They do show the Latinos sometimes throughout the episodes. They were beefing with the Homeboys this episode. Sister: Yeah, but they only have the two main guys and I don’t know who anyone else is. Me: Well they killed the third guy last episode. Miguel killed Jorge Vasquez and that’s why he’s in the Hole…. Although, I did see Jorge in some of the cafeteria scenes this episode… Sister: Time travel...

Daniel Howell's book told me that if we search for the good even in the shittiest days, we can rewire our brain to automatically search for it every day. Trying this method. The old method (being sad, critical and blaming myself for being a disgrace) never worked anyway. Search for the good parts in everything. As Dan said: even the act of searching for it can do wonders for your brain (seriously, go read that book, there's nothing judgemental in it, only pure empathy and genuine help).

This might be more construction than world building but I have characters who crawl into spaces in the ceiling, walls and floors, or follow ducts etc for plot reasons. But when does actually building a place like this actually makes sense and can be accessed and not just stick these features in some random building/environment for plot devices??

Tex: It’s a perfectly valid question for here, honestly, we’ve answered construction questions before. I think this is heavily era- and building-dependent, however, since air ducts and their related plenum spaces are either phasing out of fashion due to new technologies, or are too small for people to easily fit through (itty bitty robots, however…).

I’ll note that this is a useful plot device and can be handwaved a time or two so long as you’re not heavily relying upon it. Jefferies tubes, if you’re writing in space-travel settings (or even submarines, since there’s a surprising amount of overlap between the two), are a functional method to incorporating the idea of ducts and other gaps between rooms, while still maintaining believability in your worldbuilding.

HVAC, the most popular reason for ducting, is slowly being overcome by the more competitively-priced ductless or mini-split versions (Bob Vila, U.S. News), and while there’s still some potential other options (i.e. swamp coolers and window units), if your characters are indeed going around the large buildings/environments that I’m thinking of, these other options aren’t likely to be used.

There’s also the potential for things like secret passages (that aren’t Jefferies tubes), which the more paranoid owner might have constructed, and has the added benefit of existing regardless of era.

Delta: I second what Tex said; it’s going to heavily depend on what setting your story is in, so it’s difficult to provide specific suggestions. I would say, in addition to everything above, you might also consider renovated or old buildings. For example, in America it’s not uncommon to find houses or buildings throughout that have secret hideouts, tunnels, or crawl-spaces specifically to aid the Underground Railroad (An example is the Daniel Howell Hise House, though there are many more). I’m sure other countries have other reasons for secret hideouts that I’m not familiar with. War is always a good cause, or some kind of criminal activity. Speakeasies or other Mafia activity would be an example/excuse. As far as renovated buildings go, when building over an existing structure, it’s easy to simply cover up a section for a perfectly innocent reason, that could later be used to your protagonist’s advantage. The Winchester House might be the most famous example, but even normal renovation activities of everyday buildings can have this. For example, my high school was built in the 50s and has an air raid shelter that’s obviously fallen out of use, but could easily be used as a place to hide. (The finale of the tv show Leverage used this plot device, if you’re curious for an example. Obviously, spoilers.)

And yeah, I’m painfully, restlessly sarcastic and even true statements are delivered as a joke because they are…?? But seriously, this was great. And, um, I would know, cuz I majored in art education and took like three art history classes so I’m highly qualified to critique all of your creative labors, and, obviously, you desperately crave a random human’s approval and need my scrupulous, artistic eye to validate your creation.

Jesus I’m obnoxious. I usually don’t waste my time explaining myself to others.
