On February 7, 2024, an indigenous nonbinary teenager named Nex Benedict was beaten to death in a US high school bathroom.
The news has been spreading across social media over the past few days, with several news outlets misgendering and deadnaming the victim. I have seen a small handful of posts about the entire thing, but only a couple with any sources about what happened.
I spent the morning combing through articles. This is a list of publications reporting on the story that don't deadname Nex:
Pgh Lesbian Correspondents: "Grieving Nex Benedict: the Brutal Killing of 16 Year Old Nonbinary Student in an Oklahoma High School"
The Pride: "Non-Binary Student Dies After Violent Bathroom Fight at Owasso High School in Oklahoma"
The Washington Blade: "Nonbinary Okla. High School Student Dies After Fight"
The Los Angeles Blade: "Oklahoma Non-Binary High Schooler Dies After Physical Alteraction"
LGBTQ Nation: "Teen Beaten to Death in a School Bathroom Bullying Attack. The School Didn't Call an Ambulance."
Freedom Oklahoma: "Rest in Power Nex Benedict"
Indy 100: "Thousands Raised for Non-Binary Teenager Beaten to Death at School"
The Independent: "Oklahoma Banned Trans Students From Bathrooms. Now a Bullied Student is Dead After a Fight."
Daily Dot: "Oklahoma's Top Education Official Called Out Over Libs of TikTok Ties After Non-Binary Student Beaten at School, Dies Later"
Daily Kos: "Libs of TikTok Targeted a District, Then a Non-Binary Student Was Killed on Campus"
Malang Post: "Owasso High School Mourns Pupil's Death After Altercation"

[Image description: Two women in the cockpit of a plane, facing away from the camera, looking out at an airport runway. Overlaid on the image is a tumblr text-post, which has been edited whiteout-poetry style to read, "this is your pilot peaking. yeah i'm trans now". One of the women in the image is Cat Burton, a pilot who made headlines for coming out as transgender in 2019.]

I cannot even BEGIN to tell you, as a Florida teacher, the relief I feel.
Under the terms of the settlement, the Florida Board of Education will send instructions to every school district saying the Florida law doesn’t prohibit discussing LGBTQ+ people, nor prevent anti-bullying rules on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or disallow Gay-Straight Alliance groups. The settlement also spells out that the law is neutral — meaning what applies to LGBTQ+ people also applies to heterosexual people — and that it doesn’t apply to library books not being used for instruction in the classroom. The law also doesn’t apply to books with incidental references to LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex couples, “as they are not instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity any more than a math problem asking students to add bushels of apples is instruction on apple farming,” according to the settlement.
Read the full settlement here!

I think we as the queer community should focus more on worldwide lgbt news and not just American ones, like Greece legalized same sex marriage and no one's talking about it??

From the article:
By day two of Florida’s legislative session, which started last month, lawmakers had introduced nearly 20 anti-gay or anti-trans bills. One such bill, SB 1780, would make accusing someone of being homophobic, transphobic, racist or sexist, even if the accusation is true, equivalent to defamation, and punishable by a fine of at least $35,000. If passed, the bill would severely limit and punish constitutionally protected free speech in the state. Though SB 1780 is not likely to survive past higher courts, its introduction is indicative of a wider conservative strategy to stifle criticism of racist, sexist and homophobic behavior. The bill, critics argue, is being introduced to test the waters and see how far, legally, lawmakers can go until they are able to silence detractors. “That’s the pattern here in Florida,” said Sharon Austin, a professor of political science at the University of Florida. “They introduce a bill that many of us find to be really extreme. When we start to protest, eventually they take out some of the provisions and sort of water it down a little bit, but in the end it ends up getting passed.”

A pizzeria located on the outskirts of Buffalo has been ordered to pay a transgender former employee $25,000 and complete anti-discrimination training as part of a settlement stemming from a lawsuit accusing the restaurant of anti-trans harassment in violation of federal law, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced.

Just...What???
I've looked into some articles (link here, and here) on this and it's honestly so confusing and extra. People'll really do anything to exclude trans people, huh.
Basically the International Chess Federation is quoted as saying that changing one's gender "has a significant impact on a player's status and future eligibility". Mmmkay. Totally.
Trans women are able to keep their titles from before they transitioned (so titles in the open category), but trans men, while not facing the same blatant banning as the women, are forced to have their pre-transition titles "abolished". Damn.
The regulations will not allow trans women to compete with other women unless they have proof they've undergone a complete transition process, which is fucking stupid especially considering the fact that that process takes time, money, and shouldn't be a requirement for anyone. Not to mention that this is literally about a fucking board game. (I know it can be an intense thinking game, so no disrespect to chess people - I'm just saying that this (trans people) really shouldn't be an issue here)
Further more, even though the International Chess Federation claims to say that they won't talk about people's transitioning, they are planning to “make an appropriate mark in the players’ database and/or use other measures to inform organizers on a player being a transgender,”. Which is so freaking unbelievable and I'm actually getting so angry right now.
I was going to make this just a silly lil post to make fun of the situation but the more I read about it, the more frustrated and hurt I got for all us transfolk out in the world just trying to live our lives when the world won't let us.
Definitely read the articles, they're both very informative. I will update if there's any way to try and petition for change or something.
EDIT: My first version of this said men's category, which was incorrect; there is a women's category and an open category.
