From the article:
In November 2023, a police officer in Okaloosa County, Florida got in a heated shootout with an acorn, endangering the life of a detained man who was handcuffed in the car. In a video that has gone viral on social media this week both for its absurdity and terrifying implications, Deputy Jesse Hernandez hears an acorn drop onto his car. In response, he dramatically rolls on the ground while repeatedly shouting “shots fired!” and unloading his sidearm into the vehicle, shattering its back window. At the time, a handcuffed man named Marquis Jackson was inside the vehicle. Jackson is a Black Florida resident who had been detained by Hernandez and his partner, Sergeant Beth Roberts, after being accused of stealing a car and sending threatening messages to his girlfriend. One of the messages included what police said was an image of a pistol silencer. After rolling on the ground, Hernandez shouted “I’m hit!”—he had not been hit—and told Roberts that shots were coming from inside the car. Roberts also unloaded her firearm at the vehicle as Jackson lay in the backseat. The incident is a stunning example of police incompetence and law enforcement’s willingness to use deadly force against the public. Lest it simply become fodder for social media jokes, it’s worth looking at how the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office handled the issue and the effect it had on Jackson, who said he was severely psychologically impacted and “damaged for life.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a law that prevents cities or counties from creating protections for workers who labor in the state's often extreme and dangerous heat. Two million people in Florida, from construction to agriculture, work outside in often humid, blazing heat. For years, many of them have asked for rules to protect them from heat: paid rest breaks, water, and access to shade when temperatures soar. After years of negotiations, such rules were on the agenda in Miami-Dade County, home to an estimated 300,000 outdoor workers. But the new law, signed Thursday evening, blocks such protections from being implemented in cities and counties across the state.

If kids are old enough to be bullied for being LGBTQ+, then they're old enough to be taught acceptance and be educated. Plain and simple.

I cannot even BEGIN to tell you, as a Florida teacher, the relief I feel.
Under the terms of the settlement, the Florida Board of Education will send instructions to every school district saying the Florida law doesn’t prohibit discussing LGBTQ+ people, nor prevent anti-bullying rules on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or disallow Gay-Straight Alliance groups. The settlement also spells out that the law is neutral — meaning what applies to LGBTQ+ people also applies to heterosexual people — and that it doesn’t apply to library books not being used for instruction in the classroom. The law also doesn’t apply to books with incidental references to LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex couples, “as they are not instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity any more than a math problem asking students to add bushels of apples is instruction on apple farming,” according to the settlement.

So you don’t see how it is discriminatory for a straight teacher to be able to mention their spouse/partner while a gay teacher can’t?
The Florida law does not prevent passing references of this nature. The focus of the law is the formal instruction that young children are to receive.

These two pieces of art were found "too offensive" for Florida State University. This is clearly an attempt by the DeSantis administration to further along a dark, toxic message. Please spread these around with friends, mutuals, and loved ones so he doesn't succeed!

People really need to talk about how Desantis tortured people at Guantanamo more....
TLDW:  Desantis oversaw torture at Guantanamo.  He would gain the trust of prisoners over time and then ask them about their biggest fears.  He would then report back and the torturers would use the information of the prisoners fears to personalize their torture.  Desantis would watch and laugh while this happened.

From the article:
By day two of Florida’s legislative session, which started last month, lawmakers had introduced nearly 20 anti-gay or anti-trans bills. One such bill, SB 1780, would make accusing someone of being homophobic, transphobic, racist or sexist, even if the accusation is true, equivalent to defamation, and punishable by a fine of at least $35,000. If passed, the bill would severely limit and punish constitutionally protected free speech in the state. Though SB 1780 is not likely to survive past higher courts, its introduction is indicative of a wider conservative strategy to stifle criticism of racist, sexist and homophobic behavior. The bill, critics argue, is being introduced to test the waters and see how far, legally, lawmakers can go until they are able to silence detractors. “That’s the pattern here in Florida,” said Sharon Austin, a professor of political science at the University of Florida. “They introduce a bill that many of us find to be really extreme. When we start to protest, eventually they take out some of the provisions and sort of water it down a little bit, but in the end it ends up getting passed.”

Help fight for Florida abortion access!
Attention, fellow workers of Florida! Florida has a chance to help defend healthcare and bodily autonomy, but the organizers of this petition need your help!
From the website for Floridians Protecting Freedom:
"Floridians Protecting Freedom (FPF) is a statewide campaign of allied organizations and concerned citizens working together to protect Floridians’ access to abortion as reproductive health care and defend the right to bodily autonomy. FPF recognizes that all Floridians deserve the freedom to make personal medical decisions, including about abortion, free of government intrusion."
