ok but think about it

merlin and arthur are already together living happily but arthur still doesn’t know about merlin’s magic. THEN arthur does find out about merlin’s magic by i dunno merlin having to use it to protect arthur or just like arthur walks into his chambers and merlin’s using magic for his chores. merlin not really freaks out but freezes because he doesn’t want to loose arthur (bonus points if they just got together so then it’s like merlin just got arthur). and arthur’s freaking out internally and has to leave you know, get his thoughts in order, but makes merlin stay in his chambers or whatnot and merlin’s still like oh my god shit he’s going to banish me. here comes the song part. arthur comes back and obviously he doesn’t hate merlin he could never hate merlin. and merlin because arthur doesn’t look mad, starts blabbering on about his magic and destiny and about how he has to stay and protect arthur and he’ll take whatever arthur wants to give him and if that means they’re no longer courting so be it. and he talks about emrys and how magic is good can be good. now arthur’s cuts him off by grabbing his wrists or something (a kiss maybe?) but like comes really close and is like “i don’t want emrys or some super powerful god to protect me. i want you. merlin just merlin. i want something just like this. what we have right now.” and merlin’s like “i don’t want to put you in danger by knowing me” arthur: “how much do you want to risk? because i would risk everything for this. for you” queue love confessions and happy in love merthur

Arthur walks into his chambers to see Merlin collapsed face-first on the bed and instantly panics. 

“Merlin,” he calls, hurrying over, fully prepared to holler for Gaius, for the knights, anyone, “Merlin, are you alright?”

Merlin’s eyelids flutter and his head twitches, eyes just barely opening as Arthur leans over him. “‘rthur?”

“Yes, Merlin, it’s me, I’m right here.” No obvious injuries, doesn’t appear to be anything else wrong… “Can you tell me what’s the matter?”

“Tried to make the bed…” He shifts a little. “Got…got sore.”

“You got sore? Is—is it your magic again?”

Merlin mumbles into the pillow and Arthur bites back a curse. 

“Merlin, can I—can I flip you over?”

“What?”

“I want to be able to hear you, and you’re talking more to the blankets than to me. Can I turn you over? I’ll be careful.”

Merlin snuffles into the bedspread—adorable—and nods. Arthur takes a deep breath and carefully works his hands under Merlin’s torso and rolls him over, reaching up to cradle his head to ensure it comes back down softly. He then kneels down and takes his boots off, adjusting him so he’s laying on the bed properly. 

Merlin blinks up at him when he moves to sit on the edge of the bed so he won’t strain his neck. “Did you take my boots off?”

“You’re not lying in my bed in your boots, Merlin.”

“’S not the first time.”

“Not the—Merlin, have you been sleeping in my bed with your shoes on?”

It’s almost worth it for the small smile that comes to Merlin’s face as Arthur splutters indignantly. Almost. 

“Alright—aside from that,” Arthur huffs, shaking his head, “can you tell me what you said?”

“Huh?”

“When I asked you if it was your magic again, you said something I couldn’t hear, what was it?”

Merlin lets out a long breath, his chest deflating. “’S…’s not really the…same thing.”

“So you’re not repressing your magic and it’s not hurting you?”

His arm twitches as though he’s about to weakly smack him—don’t worry, Merlin, I’m sure it would’ve been a good one—and he huffs. “’S not the same thing.”

“So what is it, then?” 

“’S…’s different.”

Arthur resists the urge to snap. He takes his own deep breath and leans down, carefully brushing Merlin’s hair back from his face. 

“I can’t help you if you won’t tell me what’s wrong,” he murmurs, trying to make himself sound as earnest and sincere as possible, “let me help you.”

Merlin blinks up at him, eyes still heavy, before he swallows. “Don’t laugh at me.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

“It’s—’s—you have to stop,” he mumbles,” can’—can’t think with your hand on me.”

Arthur’s hand flies away so quickly it’s like he burned it.

“N-no, I—“ Merlin shudders again. “Sorry. ‘urts a lot.”

“Take your time. It’s alright.”

He takes another moment to gather himself before he’s looking back up at Arthur properly. “Magic makes me feel. A lot. All the time. Too much, sometimes.”

Arthur nods. Merlin bites his lip. 

“So…so I make it…feel less.”

“What do you mean, ‘make it feel less?’”

“Like…I make it so I feel it less.”

“Merlin, unless you’re trying to tell me that you repress all of your senses, then…” Arthur trails off when Merlin’s head bobbles in a nod. “…you—that is what you’re trying to tell me?”

“For quests, I have to make it hurt less. Then here I can’t—magic is—you know that bit.”

Yes. That bit. 

‘That bit’ being that Merlin is in an environment so hostile to his every existence that he’s forced to repress such an integral part of himself that it causes him pain. That he’s so terrified to just be around Arthur, the knights, around Camelot that he’s constantly aware of it, constantly about to be executed. 

‘That bit,’ indeed. 

But this…

“So…so you’re saying that you—you repress everything? Sight, smell, hearing, taste, even touch? Truly everything?”

“Not all the way. ’S like putting blinders on a horse.”

“Merlin…”

“What?”

Arthur almost scoffs. ‘What,’ he says, like he’s supposed to compare himself to a—a mere service than who he really is, and I’m not supposed to be upset by it? “I—how do I help?”

Merlin shifts a little, expression pulling as the pain must shift too. “Normally…normally Aithusa helps. But she’s busy today so I…thought I could…”

Thought I could go without, goes unsaid but Arthur hears it perfectly well. 

“What does she do?”

“Just, er…” A pretty little flush comes to Merlin’s cheeks. “…touches me.”

“Well, I’m not magic, but I can touch you.”

The flush darkens. “Arthur!”

“Oh, not like that, Merlin—well—alright, I’m being mean,” he chuckles when Merlin scowls up at him, “I’m serious, though. If…if touch is what you need, you can have it from me.”

The scowl morphs into something still suspicious, but a tad more hopeful. “Really?”

“Really.” He smiles, shucking off his own boots and leaning up. “I can be your dragon today.”

Please, Merlin, let me help. Let me help you.

Merlin looks at him a moment longer before he dips his head in a shaky nod. Arthur smiles and lifts his hands, waiting. 

“What should I do? What does the dragon normally do?”

“W-well, she, er…kind of…lies on top of me? But you don’t have to—“

But Arthur’s already moving, careful of his weight and limbs, to rest gently on top of Merlin, smiling a little at his surprised little face. “Alright?”

“…you’re heavy.”

“If you’re about to tell me I weigh more than a dragon—“

“No, no, ’s good. In this case.”

He gently swats Merlin’s shoulder in retaliation. “Is this it, then?”

“Er—that’s all you have to do if you want to.”

“Not what I asked,” he corrects softly, “what else do you need?”

“Well—er—I—“

At the sound of his somewhat frantic babbling, Arthur leans up to look him in the eye. “I’m here to help, Merlin, you can ask for what you need. But if you’re not comfortable, then that’s alright too.”

“…she licks my hands, Arthur.”

“Ah.” He chuckles. “Well, no, I’m not doing that.”

“Figured.”

“But I can kiss them.”

“You—what?”

“Merlin,” he says softly, reaching up to cradle one of Merlin’s hands in his, “can I kiss your hands?”

“Y-yes? But Arthur, you really don’t—don’t—oh.”

For Arthur had carefully brought Merlin’s hand up to his mouth and kissed the back of it, then turned it over to kiss the palm. He presses kisses gently to each of his fingertips, stroking the rest with his thumb. Then he reaches for the other to give it the same treatment, looking up at Merlin when he’s finished. 

“What else?”

“I…er…my neck.”

“Your neck?” Arthur leans down. “Should I kiss you here too?”

“Arthur, you don’t have to do this,” Merlin almost pleads, “it—just lying on top of me is fine.”

“How many times am I going to have to say it,” he murmurs, soft tone taking all the bite from the words, “I want to help you. Let me help you.”

“This is more than just helping me.”

“Oh? Then what is it?”

“This is—this is—“

“What?”

Merlin just stares up at him. There’s a strange fear on his face that makes Arthur stop, propping himself up to look at Merlin properly. 

“What is it,” he asks gently, “am I being too much?”

“N-no, I just—I—“ 

To his dismay, tears begin to well up in Merlin’s eyes. 

“Oh, hey, hey,” he croons, cupping Merlin’s face in his hands and wiping away the tears, “don’t cry, sweetheart, don’t cry.”

This just makes Merlin sob harder. 

“Shh, shh, oh, Merlin, you big baby…” He leans down and rests their foreheads together. “Tell me, tell me what’s wrong. Is it hurting more? Am I making it worse?”

Merlin’s hands come up to clutch weakly at his sleeves and tug. Arthur obeys, laying down a little more so Merlin can feel the press of his weight. 

“You’ve got me. See? I’m right here. You got me.”

“’S so much,” Merlin sobs, “so much an’ so good an’ I—I want it.”

Arthur feels the relieved smile spread across his face, breath shuddering out alongside Merlin’s. “Okay. Okay, I want it too. That’s okay. I’m here. I’m right here.”

He leans down to kiss Merlin’s neck, careful, careful, always careful. Merlin just clings to him as tight as he can—which is admittedly not all that tight, not when his hands are so sore. Arthur pushes up into the touch whenever he feels it, a silent reward for asking for what he needs. 

“’S so warm,” Merlin’s throat rumbles against his lips, “you’re so—you’re so warm.”

Arthur chuckles. “You going to steal my body heat?”

“Yes. Selfish prick, you are.”

“That’s me.” He drags his lips up and over the curve of Merlin’s jaw, ending at his cheek. “A selfish prick.”

Merlin sniffles. “Least you know it.”

He smiles, letting his nose brush Merlin’s temple. He shifts his weight just a little, just to ensure he’s not crushing the man beneath him, before he softly presses his lips to the very corner of Merlin’s mouth. 

Merlin goes still. 

“Sorry,” he mutters, pulling away, “sorry, should’ve asked.”

“…I didn’t mind.”

“Huh?”

“Didn’t mind.” Merlin looks up at him. “Could do it again, if you wanted.”

A surge of hope in Arthur’s chest. “Aithusa do that for you too?”

“No, just you.” Merlin tilts his head. “Please?”

Oh, Merlin, I will never tell you how little I can refuse you if you say please. 

And Arthur’s all too happy to lean down and seal their mouths together, smiling as he feels the familiar tingle of Merlin’s magic as he starts to kiss back. 

There you are, he thinks, I’ve missed you.

Definitely might want to pay attention to the tags on this one; one scene can be interpreted both as dubious consent (but more like a I want this, but I can’t do this type of situation), as well as mentions of infidelity and attempted suicide by magic because Merlin just doesn’t want to deal with the fallout and aftermath of his and Arthur’s actions and the consequences it has on their relationships with Gwen and Gwaine.  But if you can handle the rough spots, this fic is truly spectacular.

A different take on the dorocha.  Instead of them being faceless screams that attack you, they are actually figures of the dead.  Merlin doesn’t quite realize how much death affected him until him and the knights go to close the veil.

One of my absolute favorite fics of all time.  It also has a bit of Uther redemption in it and Lancelot lives! It also has one of my favorite interactions in a fanfiction: 

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Arthur growled, throwing up his hands.  “That thing murdered my people and you allowed it to live--” 

“You murdered my people and I allowed you to live,” Merlin said sharply.  Gwaine felt his eyes widen.  Bold words.  Part of him wanted to ‘ooh’ at it but knew it would lead to a very bad outcome.

A super fun but also very romantic fic.  Druids far and wide come in and kiss Merlin, hoping that their magic will react a certain way with Merlin’s and he’ll bond with one of them.  Merlin however decides to throw a wrench in his plan when he chooses to bond with Arthur instead after almost losing him.  

Overstepping

Description:

Merlin knew he was pushing his limits, that he was millimetres away from overstepping the invisible line that Arthur had wordlessly set and the warlock had been careful not to cross, but he was never one to listen to the rules that were set for him.  Especially not when he was afraid. 

Agravaine had managed to weasel his way into his king’s mind and ingrain doubts in the people he loved, the people that loved him...doubts that only took place and bloomed as the traitor lied and deceived and planted things against them. He had gotten rid of Gwen easily enough, and had almost gotten rid of Gaius. Merlin was afraid. Were a few words and items all it would take for Arthur to turn against him too?

Merlin steps over a line and Arthur punishes him for it.  Later, when Merlin was right, Arthur regrets his decision and saves him.  Romance blooms between the two, but a wrench gets thrown in along the way with the reveal of Merlin’s magic and deeds in Arthur’s name.  There is a lot of angst, but I like to feel as if it’s a happy ending for the two.

Unfortunately the only negative that this fic has going for it is that it doesn’t seem as if it’ll ever be finished.  There are 7 chapters and they were last updated in December of 2011.  Still worth the read.

One of the only fics on this list that won’t be specifically a Merthur fic; but it still isn’t Mergana either.  The idea is that after the revelation at Camlann, one can assume that Arthur lived and that Morgana wasn’t killed; that Merlin had been banished or sent away for the lies he told and somehow was subsequently captured.  

What starts out as a hostile interactions between Merlin and Morgana leads to understanding and apologies that lead on a path to healing.  The end is left open ended, it’s implied that they are sent to their deaths in another kingdom without hope of being rescued, but you can use your imagination to decide if you wanted them to have a happier ending.

Merlin and Arthur have a baby!  But it’s not an mpreg fic.  Guinevere discovers that Arthur and Merlin are more tied together than she and Arthur are - and while that is difficult for her to come to terms with, she concedes that Arthur has the chance that she never had with Lancelot and doesn’t want to stand in the way.  Queue of course evil plotting on behalf of Morgana and a kidnapping of the queen and princess - who happens to have shown gifts of her own - and it’s a rollercoaster of a tale that leaves you wanting more.

I don’t usually enjoy mpreg fics because they don’t make sense to me from a biological stand point and usually get explained away as “because reasons”.  This fic is an exception, it does a good job of explaining why it is that Merlin might wound up in his situation and it deals with difficult question about how to handle the knowledge and who to share it with.

1. Why did you choose your url?

I used to have a different tumblr, and then my sister saw me on it and literally took the mouse and made me follow her own tumblr, and it made me So Immensely uncomfortable, I immediately went and made a whole new blog, and messaged all my mutuals privately to tell them I was moving so my sister wouldn't find out. As I struggled to come up with something more creative than 'time-lady," I remembered one of my mom's favorite sayings, "Reality sucks, live in fiction" and since livinginfiction was taken, my friend (who was helping with the crisis) and I added an 's.' Voila. Seven years later, it's the only username i have online. XD

2. Any side blog?

Three, actually. We've got @merthurismycrack where I reblog Merthur shit, @samspsychicpowers for some SPN stuff, and the side blog that's basically my main blog at this point: @asterekmess which is where all my Teen Wolf and Sterek stuff goes.

3. How long have you been on tumblr?

Uhhh, I've been on this blog since August of 2014, but my old blog was started in....March 2013. I've been around a fucking while.

4. Do you have a queue tag?

HA. Fuck no. Do I look that organized? Y'all get three hours of spam reblogs, and then I disappear into the aether. How it should be. XD

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

This is essentially the same as I said for question one. Sister found the old blog, and I needed a new one. I tend to make my side blogs for more pointed material, so that my main blog can have like...the amalgamation of general stuff i like, and then I can keep the fandomy content more concentrated into the side blogs.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

Originally, I did not have this icon. I had this pic I found online with these Beautiful bronze wings against a black background. But then, around the time I decided I wanted to sort of...simplify things and make my username for my online stuff all the same, with all the same pfp's so that I was easily recognized, etc, I realized that....that picture was not mine. I didn't design it or anything. And i couldn't find its source to ask for permission to use it. And it started making me feel shitty for using it in the first place. So I spent like an hour and a half trying to make my Own Wing pic to use, and failed miserably. As a last ditch effort, i went through my 'artistic' photos on my phone and found this one. I adore sky pics, and cloud pics, etc, so it was super my thing, and I just slapped it on there. Still not sick of it. XD I also went to my side blogs and changed out the pfp's for photos that I'd taken, except the sterek blog, because that one is literally just a black triskelion on a white background, and it's a pretty non-specific thing. I would have used a picture of my Own Tattoo, but it's very hard to get a picture of my back that doesn't have weird lighting, and I'm just too lazy.

7. Why did you choose your header?

All my headers are also photos that I've taken or art pieces that I've made. In the case of this blog, it's a picture I made with a 'galaxy maker' online thingy. I love green. I love blue. Ta dah. In general i just try to find something that gives me the right vibes or has the right color palette to match what it's for. (orange and blue for sterek, trees for merlin, and wings for spn)

8. What’s your post with the most notes?

On this blog? I.....just spent two hours digging through all my posts tagged 'personal' bc i wanted the post that I MADE with the most notes...and i have no idea. I mostly respond to other posts, rather than making my own. The highest note count i can find is a post i made abt having friends that aren't in your fandom, which means you can use inspirational quotes to help them through tough times without them realizing ur quoting doctor who or something. 22 notes. *fingerguns* I'm famous, i know.

9. How many mutuals do you have ?

Uhghhghghgh, this blog has 439 at the moment, and i'm pretty sure not a lot of those are porn bots, bc i usually screen new followers for it. a lot of them have come over from my sterek blog though.

My sterek blog gets in fights more often than it should. XD I'm feisty. And I dunno who wins, i think no one. it's tumblr. there's no real winning or losing.

Oh 90% of the time I'll fucking ignore it on principle. I come to tumblr to enjoy myself and escape. I refuse to guilt the shit out of myself and my followers for not reblogging something deemed Essential. I don't care how deep the topic is or how heavy. Sometimes that's WHY I'm not reblogging it, because I don't want that shit on my blog. The other 10% of the time, I'll go to most recent reblog that Doesn't have the guilty shit on it, and then reblog that.

3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works? uh,,,, I think I have a pretty distinctive prose style? Which is to say run-on sentences and some intentional grammar violations to keep the rhythm/flow, and I try to be very evocative with my descriptions and metaphors. I hope it works :)

5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of? At this moment, it’s “Break My Step & Relent” for being the longest fic I’ve finished! I know 6k is like an afternoon snack for fic readers but it took me forever because I write so slowly. It felt really good to finally finish that, and I was pretty pleased with some of the writing & the overall degree of Arthur’s RepressionTM.

12. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.  I’m gonna do a Merthur 5+1 that I’ve been pondering for a while: 5 times from canon that Arthur faced losing Merlin + 1 time the author said fuck canon. It covers some of my favorite moments/episodes so it’s gonna be a lot of fun. I really, really love when Arthur’s forced to confront how much Merlin means to him.
