This is just me being speculative, but I think Rayla already suspects that Callum used dark magic to escape his shackles. She could tell that he was troubled by something by the somber tone he had. And I think she's accepted that Callum ultimately had no choice given she was barely a minute from dying, and as such likely wouldn't hold it against him like she initially did the first time in S2. Like Callum with her, she's learning to accept the dark parts of him she may never truly know.
Yeah, I could see her putting it together on her own but waiting for him to bring it up (the way that he let her have that space with the coins) and I would like to watch a oneshot with that as the vibe.
I think, if she hasn't put it together (and she might not - she may not have even known he'd been chained below decks and assumed it was rope or he found some other spell work around the way he did with her literal ropes)... I think she'll be surprised and sad and maybe a little angry (aka worried) at first, but... Take a deep breath and hug him and make sure he's alright, knowing and trusting that he did it for a good reason (even if she probably doesn't think she's worth it) because he's torn up enough about it.
I've always been interested in exploring a version of 2x09 (and s3 by extension perhaps) where Callum doesn't wake up with the Sky arcanum, and they have to hash out where the lines are for him using dark magic. Cause I think while Rayla would never be happy about it... past 2x09 she doesn't really care.
R: Callum, please, come back. It doesn't matter what you did before, I just want you to be okay again.
Not that he's forgiven, not that she knows he'll never do it again, etc, but that it just flat out Doesn't Matter to her anymore. He did dark magic. So what? She loves him and she wants him to be okay.
So I think her primary emotion, upon finding out, will be worry that he isn't okay, since dark magic is dangerous and something he greatly dislikes as well but like - she loves him unconditionally. That's never going to change, either

If it were up to you, how would you re-write all the mishaps that went wrong in R + M's relationship in every season of the show?
Oh boy, that's a lot. I think I'd start with Ryan's outburst in 1x13 when Marissa has an open bottle of vodka and they get pulled over by a cop for a broken tail light. I get Ryan's POV, I truly do, but he didn't have to slam her door like that. It's nuts. That's not a mishap or relationship ruiner but I don't think it's this hero moment a lot of people think/thought it was.
I wish Ryan had faced more friction post-Oliver about his behavior during that storyline. Man was right in the end but that doesn't make the things he did okay such as breaking into Marissa's locker at night. Like wtf. And Marissa was literally held hostage with a gun to her head so I think the whole Marissa groveling at Ryan's feet for forgiveness thing went too far. She was manipulated by a college-aged boy she thought was her friend and equal. It wasn't as deeply about betrayal as they wanted it to be.
Ryan immediately moving back to Chino with Theresa is so extra the more we discuss it. The distance between Chino and Newport is like 40 miles!! He could still be involved as much as he wanted without literally moving, especially as a legally adopted 16-year-old. If anything, he'd have had more financial support living with the Cohens and commuting back and forth. Ridiculous.
I think the DJ storyline is more Marissa eliciting self-sabotage. She's mad at Ryan but she doesn't even realize she is until it's too late. And if Ryan is still holding the trust thing against her, fine, but that storyline ultimately goes nowhere because Lindsay is introduced in the next episode.
2x09 could've really built to a moment RM both needed to acknowledge their past and hangups but the apology scene needed about a million more things on Ryan's end. Marissa's doing all the emotional work in that exchange ("okay, you're over it, maybe I never meant anything to you") and Ryan's just like "it's not like that" and he LEAVES. Fuck man, there's so much more to be said.
I wish RM had talked about the almost-kiss moments they had in 2x18/19. They know they're building to something and it's very them to ignore it but it makes "been a while since we were alone without being interrupted by someone or something" more annoying because it's like, have you guys been discussing this interruption thing? If you're so open about it now?
Obviously the Trey assault is the worst thing this show did. And they did it without any proper plan in place. So I'd change all of that.
The stakes are so high in 3x01 with who will be in trouble for shooting Trey. I think if they'd kept this up with lawyers and police for half a season it would've been more interesting. All of a sudden it's all solved with a shake of their wrists and we move on to typical Newport shit.
Johnny should've been a blip that went away in 3x05 when he introduced his uncle to Ryan. It would make sense for a short arc. Bring Kaitlin into the fold then to become the confidante Marissa needs. And she's not afraid to push Ryan's buttons so she would've pushed Ryan to take her place because that's who Marissa really wants/needs.
Not making a whole ass Chrismukkah episode about stupid Johnny. God.
Bringing Marissa's letter to Johnny back to life in some form. They let that thread fade away. It would've helped Ryan post-accident to see where Marissa's heart really resided while she was grieving. Because grief doesn't immediately equal heartbreak!
I like 3x17 enough for what it's trying to do and the fact exists that Ryan did in fact invite Marissa to his party which meant in-show that he wanted to try again with them. They're both being very teenage-y about it with SS all episode and for him to invite her meant a Lot!!! The moment she turns away on the pier hurts my heart in a good way but I wish he'd seen her turn away. Even if he didn't stop her, I wish he'd seen that she'd showed up.
Another thing Ryan should've known was that Marissa stopped Sadie from leaving.
Them flirting with Ryan/Theresa again in 3x22-24 was so weird because we know how miserable Ryan found their life together in the summer between s1 and 2. It was just... unnecessary, I guess? Because Ryan needed a prom date? Idk
Why did Ryan not second guess why Marissa knew all about the model home in 3x25? It's a full circle moment for sure but also very random in-show when the Roberts' mansion had a pool too lol.
I'm sure there's more 🫡

The new images made me even more hyped as before uh. I can’t wait to see all the rayllum
I wanted to ask something, in which scenario you think they may confess their love for each other again?
Callum couldn’t say it out loud in 1x04 and it seems like it will be a very big deal. Maybe Rayla will be the one to say it first this time? I don’t know how it may go and maybe it’s too soon to guess but just wanted to know your opinion, your rayllum metas calm my days
I think Callum will say it first, unless it's in a life-or-death scenario and Rayla thinks it's her last words to him kind of scenario. One of the big components for Callum in S4 is his 'newfound' unwillingness to open up and express how he's feeling. Twice, the show gives us a 'sike' moment where we think he's talking about, or going to talk about, Rayla and he is more preoccupied with the immediate trauma with Aaravos (which is also a layer of everything with Rayla, but that's maybe a meta for another day).
C: I can't get it out of my head. Whenever I close my eyes, I'm back in that moment. It was... awful. E: Wow. I know you're hurting, but... I'm sure Rayla doesn't mean to make you feel like that. C: What? Rayla? I'm talking about Aaravos.
R: Whatever it is you have to say to me, everything will be fine. C: Whew, okay. Rayla. I need you... to kill me.
And again, I could talk about S4 continually highlighting Rayla and Aaravos' mirrored (pun intended) positions in Callum's life more than I already have, but that's another post for another day.
But the heart of the matter is that Rayla's feelings haven't taken a hit. She's just as in love with him, if not more so, after her leaving in TTM. She expressed it many times in her letter; she's more openly affectionate and the one wanting to work on their relationship specifically in S4. She's the one asking to stay, lovingly watching him sleep, emboldened and over the moon when he does reach out to her over the final few episodes in particular.
Callum is the one who's unsure and stumbling, unable or unwilling to express himself. He's been quite shut down in S4 and we see it's not just a reservation to talk about Rayla; as previously stated, he's worried about Aaravos as well, but he doesn't want to talk about that either. He interrogates, not confides in, Soren in 4x01 as well.
This is actually all in line how Callum has processed his feelings about Rayla before. Rayla is the one babbling and awkwardly stumbling over herself in 2x09 / 3x02. Callum is clearly also falling as well, but mostly keeping it to himself as he draws in his sketchbook (2x07) or is caught staring (3x03). And it is also reflective in how Rayla's big speeches / expressions of feelings tend to be over how much she loves/needs him, and Callum's tend to be how much he loves/admires her. Rayla has both asked him to stay and for her to be allowed to stay; Callum has done neither.
Callum's expression(s) of love has been his unwavering support and his consistent "Let me go with you". But him expressing that he does need her, that he wants her to stay, for him to ask her to stay... That feels more and more like a natural next step. He couldn't admit that he loved her in 4x01 (not that Ez needed him to). And I don't know if Rayla would say it first, else it feel (to herself) like she's pushing or putting expectations on it/him. I think she would if she thought he needed the reassurance, or as a final plea on behalf on of one of their lives (a goodbye from her, perhaps out of desperation to a brainwashed Callum to try and break him out of it) but I think otherwise it'll be him.
TLDR; leaning more towards Callum for arc reasons, could easily be Rayla for dramatic reasons.

*walks up to the podium wearing my fandom logic hat and holding a cup of coffee* "Very suspicious that Peter Hale's corpse wasn't bisected by Derek after killing him. If he'd done that, it would prevent any regeneration. That's why Peter tore Laura in half, it's why Gerard cut that omega in half. It's pretty common knowledge, so WHY didn't Derek do it? Why didn't he sever his corpse? Peter couldn't have pulled his Worm Moon resurrection trick if Derek had done his damn job as alpha. But the fail wolf strikes again!
Or.... is there something MORE going on than mere incompetence? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Derek did have Peter buried directly under the house, perhaps he was doing some esoteric werewolf stuff? Plus, when Peter came back, he made no moves to put him back in the ground which resulted in him trying to kill Scott and plotting with Kate. Kinda like when stans say they could save themselves future problems by killing the bad guys."
Tumblr media
From a Watsonian perspective, I can absolutely understand why Derek wouldn't take the necessary steps to make sure Peter was truly dead. Peter had been, as far as Derek knew at the time, his last living relative. It might have been too much of an emotional burden. Especially, when you think about it, the hemicorporectomy would have been what a hunter would have done (what Kate would have done) to make sure Peter was dead. In any event, Derek wouldn't have known about Peter's plan to resurrect himself via banshee.
On the other hand, what's the reason that Derek doesn't put Peter in jail or kill him again once he resurrects? Peter is still just as guilty of the things he did in Season 1. Why is ripping his throat out justified in Code Breaker (1x12) but not Battlefield (2x11)? It would have been a mystery to us, but Deaton explained the entire process.
Deaton: She was right. And I have some advice that you need to listen to very closely right now. What Peter managed to do doesn't come without a price. He'll be physically weak, so he'll rely on the strength of his intelligence, his cunning. He's gonna come at you, Derek. He'll try to twist his way inside your head, preying on your insecurities. He'll tell you that he's the only way you can stop Gerard. Do not trust him.
And Derek, being the absolute disaster he is, ignores everything Deaton told him, because that's exactly what happens.
From a Doylist perspective, the production did not overestimate how much the audience simply digs an immoral white male millionaire. Ever since the 80s and the reign of J. R. Ewing, United States culture has fallen in love with the appeal of a ruthless asshole who thinks he's entitled to whatever he happens to want even though he has more than most other people (wealth, power, the ability to cheat death, the ability to get away with murder, etc.).
If you notice how they use Peter between the end of Party Guessed (2x09) and the conclusion of Orphaned (4x06) the production tries to balance his mean-spirited humor and his general usefulness with obvious signs that he is still a shit-bucket. He always does just enough to merit him being around while suspending final judgment so they can use him at the end of Season 4 while keeping the audience entertained. He doesn't have an arc because the production didn't want him to have an arc. He was there to lure in the viewers.
It's why they never have Scott or anyone else confront Peter about what he did to Scott (or Stiles or Melissa) in those episodes, because they always intended for Peter to do it again, to form a parallel with season 1. The problem with keeping him onscreen and clearly not the slightest bit changed from Season 1 is that it undermines everyone else's arcs because creates the illusion of acceptance, and this is a significant mistake on the part of the production.
Derek is supposed to have a turnaround in Season 3 rejecting the guilt and mistrusts that paralyzes him, but he keeps Peter around out of guilt (he's not happy to have Peter around given his passive-aggressive digs at Peter in Season 3) yet he doesn't challenge Peter on his bullshit, like this speech in Fireflies (3x03):
Peter: Oh, come on. How much damage can they do? So they off a few homeless people, a drunk stumbling out of a bar too late. So what? Let Scott deal with it. Let him be the hero of his morally black and white world. The real survivors, you and I, we live in shades of gray. Then again, even if you did kill them, you're still an Alpha. You can always make more werewolves.
That Derek doesn't respond with a rejection of that idea -- "So, Uncle Pete, what shade of gray was you murdering Laura?" -- may have heightened the tension of his arc, but even after Derek answers it definitively at the end of the season in his rejection of Jennifer, the production did not close that door, as it were. If you look at 3B, Derek no longer listens to Peter at all, but that fact is hidden in the background. Derek keeps this monster around for no apparent reason, leaving the audience the option to believe that there is some use to Peter after all.
It undermines Scott's arc as well. If we're to believe that the driving force of Scott's heroism is that he doesn't want anyone to die and will do what he can to stop others from dying (even if he doesn't always succeed) what does it mean that Peter sashays across the screen unbothered by the murders and savagery he committed in Season 1? Even if parts of the audience are deluded enough to believe Peter's I-was-out-of-my-mind-yet-still-thoughtful-enough-to-lure-my-niece-here-from-across-the-country-while-planning-for-my-own-resurrection-in-case-it-goes-wrong defense, there's nothing to counter one simple fact -- after his resurrection, Peter remains successful at being Peter, and not only does no one stop him, no one even tries.
Peter murders Jennifer to get his powers back. No one notices that his powers are back until Orphaned (4x06), and Derek doesn't give a damn, doing nothing about it, not even investigating or warning Scott. It's not about there being no consequence for the murder of Jennifer, it's about the fact that no one even cares enough to try.
And if that wasn't enough, and I will forever be pressed about this, Peter murders the Mute right in front of the Sheriff and Derek in The Benefactor (4x04). Peter intimidates Noah into backing off and ignores Derek's limp admonishment with a sassy quip: "I'm a creature of habit." Peter literally announces to those men that he's a killer and he's going to keep killing and they're free to go choke, and Derek Hale and the Sheriff do absolutely nothing about it.
Of course, the production was setting up the final confrontation with Scott at the end of the season, but the way the production chose to do it with a sexy, sassy, quasi-evil Peter that could still be palatable to the audience -- with the only counters being Derek's passive aggression (anesthetic and blow torches), Braeden's disdain, Noah's useless posturing, and Stiles frantic warning and manipulation -- creates the impression that it isn't Peter's methods that are the problem, it's the execution. Especially with the bombastic "my family's legacy" speech at the end, they put Scott and Peter on the same weirdly equivalent level. Instead of Scott slaying a monster who proudly embraces murder as a means of social advancement, they literally gave the audience permission to wonder if the right person won the fight.
In other words, since it's possible to legitimately wonder if Peter killing Scott in Mexico might finally force the Sheriff to do something about him but it's not a sure thing, the production got something wrong.

Re-watching 204 and it is a bit confusing, Marissa goes to DJ before Ryan mentions the group hang and says she wants to be 'something' (even just friends). When DJ mentions he was there to distract him, Marissa says 'you know it wasn't like that' and IDK maybe she feels bad admitting it to him but that's what it actually was? It's interesting for M to ask R to hang out after seeing him with Lindsay an episode earlier, I think she truly just wants him in any capacity in her life.
Oh I gotcha! My bad then. My memory is usually pretty good when it comes to this, yikes.
I agree. I think "You know I'm not like that" in 2x02 really was this moment of Marissa not wanting to admit she was using DJ as a distraction/placeholder. Which is actually a very normal thing to do, you're allowed to have flings to get over people (Ryan did it with Theresa! even if there were real feelings too). But DJ was more emotionally invested and thought it meant more than Marissa did. And she never likes hurting anyone!!! I'm sure she enjoys his presence whether it's in her bed or not. That moment of her dissolving into tears and kissing him is really a cop out just for Ryan to see. She still has one foot in the Ryan door and one in the DJ door and is confused about it all. I don't think DJ has even a fraction of her heart but she cares about him enough to not want to hurt him in that moment.
Marissa really does just want Ryan in her life. No matter how. She wants to be Lindsay's friend in 2x09, beginning and end. She even tells Ryan "it's gonna be weird for us for a while" but she's willing to put in that effort, working through the awkwardness, to keep up the friendship. And for some reason we don't see it again until the end of 2x14. Strange.
