*not my photo*
“Come on Y/N you have to come see us! We’re traveling across the country just to see you!” Ashton whined through the phone.
“Well I didn’t ask you too Ash. I can’t risk seeing him-”
“He’s not coming, he’s staying here with her. Hell I don’t even think he knows we left.”
You sighed, “Who exactly is ‘we’?”
“Me and Mikey,” you could hear the smile in his voice. You had always been the closest to him and Michael. Not that you and Calum weren’t close, it was just different.
“What about Cal?” you asked.
“He’s staying back so you know who doesn’t get suspicious about the three of us all leaving for a weekend.”
“I don’t know Ash,” you sighed again. “I have work and stuff. Plus I was supposed to see the twins this weekend, and I wanted to go to Target…” you trailed off as you rattled on with excuses.
“Oh please, you know you miss us just as much as we miss you. It’s been six months Y/N, just come hangout for the night. I promise it’s not gonna be anything big. Just you, me, Mike and Crystal. We’ll just do pizza and play some games. Please Y/N, we’re already at the airport and if you don’t come willingly we got your new address from Lacey.”
You mentally cursed your best friend, she knew you specifically didn’t give any of them your new address for this very reason. You were out of excuses and you could hear Ashton’s smirk through the phone. He had you cornered and he knew it.
“Fine. Text me your Airbnb info and I’ll come over tomorrow when I’m done work. But you better be getting the good pizza, and there better be drinks.”
“Yes she’s in!” you heard Mikey yell in the background. You rolled your eyes but couldn’t help the smile that spread over your face.
“Bye boys, safe flight.”
You hung up the phone and put your head in your hands. While part of you was very excited to see Ashton and Michael again there was still a part of you that was worried. There was too much history between you and him so of course they all knew about it. They tried not to take sides during the break up but everyone knew he had Calum and you had the other two. It was part of the reason that you had moved back home instead of trying to find a place to stay in L.A.. You could feel the tension that was building between the four of them and the last thing you wanted to do was ruin their friendships or their band. It was all way more important than you.
You hadn’t really spoken to any of them much other than the casual ‘how are you’ texts here and there. But from him it had been radio silence for six months. Now here you were, five minute after speaking with Ashton and you were already more stressed than you’d be in week. What did you get yourself into?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was nearing 6:15 and you couldn’t bring yourself to pull up to the house, you had been circling the block for almost 20 minutes and every time you were about to stop you told yourself one more lap. You weren’t sure what was wrong with you, you knew it was only Ash, Mike and Crystal and yet just the thought of being around his friends was enough to make you sick.
“Fuck it,” you muttered, finally pulling into the drive. You grabbed your bag, and although you hated to admit it, you were excited to see your old friends.
You walked up to the door and hesitantly knocked on it. As soon as your knuckles hit the wood you could hear yelling and footsteps running up to the door.
“Y/N!!!” Ashton yelled engulfing you in a massive hug.
“Can’t breathe…”
“Oi sorry, I’ve just missed you lots.”
“I missed you too.” you grinned at him, wondering what you had been worried about all day. It felt like no time had passed.
“Well let her in the door man,” Michael spoke up from behind.
You smiled as you entered the house and walked over to Mikey hugging him hard.
“It’s been too long,” he muttered as he let you back.
“Well yeah, that kinda happens when there’s a global pandemic and I move across the county.”
You could tell Michael was going to tell you off for moving but Crystal came in the room then and thankfully saved you from talking about him.
She wrapped her arms around you giving you a quick hug, “It’s so good to see you, I’m glad you made it!”
“Me too, though if I didn’t come willingly I knew you’d show up on my doorstep.”
“You got that right,” she laughed, “It took all my energy to keep them in the house all day.”
“Well I appreciate it, I had a lot of work to get through today figuring I’ll still be hungover on Monday from this weekend.”
It was fitting that as soon as I mentioned being hungover we walked into the kitchen to a full stocked bar.
“Man I forgot you guys really go all out for game nights,” you couldn’t help but laugh at some of the fond memories.
“Okay so what game are we playing first?” Ashton asked as he handed you a drink.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two hours later and you really didn’t understand why you were so nervous to come. It was one of the best feelings catching up with your old friends and thankfully they didn’t bring him up once. You were in the middle of an intense game of charades, Crystal and you were kicking the boys asses.
“Alright do you guys want to give up yet? You’re never going to beat us so why not save yourselves the embarrassment.”
They both looked annoyed at how the game was progressing, “Well maybe if Mike could draw anything other than stick figures we would’ve stood a chance.” Ashton grumbled.
“And now you see why I always make sure someone else gets stuck with him,” Crystal laughed as she dodged the pen Michael threw at her.
You all laughed as you cleaned up and you went over to the stack of games, contemplating what you wanted to play next. You guys had made your way through a few different games and a few rounds of drinks and honestly you were exhausted. Since moving back home you didn’t hang out with many people other than Lacey and you forgot how much energy it took to be around people. You were tired but it was the best kind of tired.
“Can we just watch a movie now? I’m tired of losing,” MIchael whined from the couch.
“That’s exactly what a sore loser would say,” you shot back.
Michael just smiled and shrugged his shoulders looking at you, “At least I know it, but I so call picking the movie.” He picked up the remote and started searching through Netflix looking for a good comedy that everyone would watch.
“Anyone up for another round?” Ashton asked and you nodded following him into the kitchen to help. It was silent as he rummaged through the alcohol looking for something new to drink. You hopped up on the counter waiting to see what he would make.
“So how have you really been?” he asked, breaking the silence.
You looked up at him, startly by his question and you could see him looking at you intently and knew exactly what he was talking about, or more so who he was talking about.
You chewed on your bottom lip as you contemplated what to tell him. “I’ve been fine.” you answered shortly.
He scoffed at your answer, “Come on Y/N, I know you better than that and as relaxed as you seem, there is still a part of you that is on edge. You ghosted us all when you left and it was like we lost a member of our family. So tell me the truth, how are you really?”
His answer startled you, and you blinked to keep the tears at bay. “Ash I really don’t wanna ruin the night and talk about him. Can we just table it for now and go back in there with Mike and Crystal. I really don't wanna bring the mood down.” You stared back at him and there must’ve been something in your eyes because he dropped it. He handed you a drink and the two of you went back into the other room.
“Hey what were you two talking about?” Crystal asked as you sat next to her on the couch, a knowing look in her eye.
You elbowed her subtly, “Debating if Mikey was gonna pick a shitty movie or not,” you laughed.
“Don’t hate until you see it, it’s a good one you all like.” He pointed to the TV and you saw Shrek was on. “Also you could say thank you I ordered a pizza and it should be here in about 30 minutes.”
“Didn’t you just eat a plate of buffalo chicken dip and mac’n’cheese?”
He shrugged, “If it’s a problem Y/N then you can’t have any.” He stuck his tongue out at you.
You held your hands up in defense “No, no. Just asking, I’m for sure eating that pizza.”
“That’s what I thought,” Michael replied smugly.
You just rolled your eyes at him and sat back to begin the movie. Not even 10 minutes later and there was a knock on the door.
“Y/N since you were so judgy you can go answer the door.”
“Fine, fine. Though you suck at telling time Mikey, this was way less than 30 minutes.”
You got up from the couch and made your way to the door excited that the pizza was here much earlier than anticipated. There was another knock on the door as you were opening it. You froze when you saw who was there.
Luke.
He must not have been expecting you either because he had a dumbfounded look on his face, and his fist was frozen in mid knock.
“Y/N?” he breathed, his eyes boring into yours.
It was silent and you both just stood there and stared at each other. It had been six months since you had seen him and although there were some noticeable changes he was still the same Luke who broke your heart all those months ago. His arms were larger and his shoulders slightly broader. His hair was longer, his roots growing out which somehow suited him more. He had shaved his quarantine beard but the stubble was growing back. His eyes were the same blue that you fell in love with, but they were missing the usual mischievous glint.
“Luke why are you just-” Calum was caught off walking up behind Luke, his face lighting up when he saw you. “Y/N?! What are you doing here? It’s so good to see you!” He squeezed past Luke and pulled you into a tight embrace.
You had no words as you hugged Cal back, you were still in shock at them being here and you couldn’t take your eyes off Luke,
“What the hell is taking so long?” Ashton came around the corner and froze when he saw the new additions to the party. “Oh you guys are early…” he trailed off.
At his statement you felt the rage building in your veins, you pushed Calum off of you turning to Ashton the anger seeping out of you. “I’m sorry what? They’re what Ashton?”
He looked sheepishly at you, “Surprise?” he shrugged his shoulders, with a slight smile on his face.
You couldn’t believe this. It was all a setup. The whole night was a trick for you to see him again when Ashton knew more than anything that it was the last thing you wanted. You were at a loss for words, as much as you wanted to yell, you didn’t have the energy anymore.
“Look we can explain…”
You held your hand up cutting him off, “Don’t Ashton, just don’t. I don’t want to hear it. I’m leaving.”
You stormed into the other room, to get you things. MIchael was trying to look busy but the guilt was written all over his face. Crystal was sitting next to him with her arms crossed glaring at her fiance, she looked up when you walked in.
“I am so sorry Y/N, I had no idea or I would’ve never let them pull this stunt.”
You gave her a weak smile, “I’m just going to get my things and go.”
Michael turned and looked like he was going to say something, but one look from Crystal silenced him.
“Thanks for the fun while it lasted, but please don’t reach out again,” you heard footsteps behind you and knew the others had followed you into the room. “I thought maybe I could be friends with some of you,” you pointedly looked at Luke, “But if this is the shit you are going to pull them I am out. I’m sorry but I cannot go through this again. I just can’t.”
With that you grabbed your bag and all but ran out of the house. As you sat in your car you were thankful that you didn’t have too much to drink and were able to drive yourself home. The thirty minute drive seemed to take forever. All you wanted was your bed and to be distracted by Netflix. After what felt like an eternity you pulled into your driveway and walked into your house. You threw your bag on the table and couldn't believe the night you had. You knew Ashton and Michael had wanted you to talk to Luke when you first broke up, but that was six months ago. You never thought that they would pull this shit tonight. It was almost more painful this time as you realized you had to cut all of them out of your life and not just Luke.
You hadn’t expected to see him tonight and it really messed you up. You had spent the last six month erasing him from your life, as much as you could. You put everything he gave you into a box that was hidden in your basement. You tried to throw it away but it felt wrong somehow. He was too big a part of your life to completely get rid of. Lacey once asked you why you didn’t get rid of it all and you knew she thought it meant you still loved him but that wasn’t it. You just couldn’t bear to part with everything that had once brought you so much happiness. You hadn’t opened the box since you moved back home, as you went downstairs to bring it to the kitchen, you knew it was going to hurt more after seeing him tonight, but you couldn’t stop yourself.
You spent over an hour looking through all the memories the two of you had made during your time together and you were a mess sitting on the floor with tears rolling down your face. Maybe it was from the exhaustion that raked your body or the alcohol that was still in your system but you left the contents of the box sprawled over the island and slipped on his old Nirvana shirt before going to your bed and finally falling asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next thing you knew you were being jolted awake by a banging on your door. You looked at the clock and groaned when you saw it was only 8:00am. Who the hell would be here so early. Hoping it was just a package you rolled back over and tried to fall back asleep, when the person knocked again.
You signed as you rolled out of bed and trudged downstairs in nothing but the old shirt you fell asleep in. Rubbing your eyes as they adjusted to the brightness, you opened the door and had to squint to see who was there.
“Y/N, you uh forgot your phone and I wanted to make sure it got back to you safely.”
You hated that your heart skipped a beat as your name rolled off his lips, your eyes focused on him and the events of last night came back to you instantly.
“Luke.”
Five Stages of Fatherhood - Leon S. Kennedy x Reader
Summary: Fatherhood can be wonderful but for Leon Kennedy, fatherhood is scary and he is not ready for it at all. How is he going to process your unexpected news?
Author’s note: I wanted to release this one-shot for Father's Day but it was far from being finished. But here it is. I was mainly inspired by the recent posts I saw on Tumblr. I hope I did Leon justice and that you'll love this story as much as I loved writing it. Don’t forget to like/reblog and give me your impression.
Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance.
           They say those are the five stages of grief. Five stages you must overcome to be at peace with yourself. Five stages you must experience, however hard and painful they are, to find the strength to pull yourself back together and keep on living.       Leon knew those five stages all too well. He had experienced them more times than he could count through all those years fighting since the Raccoon City incident. They had paved his life, making him wonder why and if he would ever see an end to it all one day.   But what he didn’t know is that he was about to experience them again. But in a new unexpected way he would have never imagined.
1.    Denial
           I’m pregnant. Three simple words that made his simple life suddenly not so simple anymore, repeating and echoing in his head, making him feel like his whole world was suddenly crumbling around him, over him, burying him under rubbles of fear and uncertainty.       I’m pregnant. He didn’t just hear that. This was a dream, a hallucination due to sleep deprivation or a silly joke. It had to be. Because it couldn’t be real. This couldn’t happen to him. There was no way he had gotten you pregnant. Yes, you were fooling him. Right? … Right? He had a brief forced laugh, anxiety eating him up slowly. “Please tell me you’re joking.”             Pinned to his desk chair, he stared at you waiting for a silly answer or an amused grin. He obviously got neither of them and so he immediately froze, watching you frowning at him with a look that was way too grave and serious to his taste. “Do you really think I would joke about something like this?” Why not? Anything would be better than those three words being the truth. “How can that be so absurd to you that I might be pregnant?” Pregnant? He felt suddenly dizzy. No fucking way.
Mouth slightly opened, confused and petrified blue eyes fixed upon you, and a marble immobility. That’s all that remained of Leon as he searched for something to say, something to think, something to reassure himself with, something to tell him that this conversation, this moment, was not happening right now.
Pregnant? Really? “I didn’t get you pregnant.” You stared at him in shock as he relentlessly shook his head. “I couldn’t. It’s not possible. I…” He cut himself off when he saw you looking away, huge tears suddenly flooding your usually joyful (colour) eyes.
Clearly, that wasn’t the reaction you expected from him. But that’s all his brain could process at the moment, the only thing it could find to keep him afloat, to prevent him from drowning in panic. “There must be some sort of mistake. I can’t be a father. This is not happening.”         Leon was freaking out. He couldn’t deny it. The pounding of his heart in his chest was enough evidence. But years fighting BOWs had taught him not to show any ounce of panic even in the worst situations. So, mechanically, no emotion filtered through in voice, making it almost cold. Actually, it sounded so heartless it rooted you on the spot, unaware of what was going on right now in your boyfriend’s head and unable to understand that his weird reaction was just his reason trying to calm him down and help find a quick way-out before reaching an inevitable end. That inevitable end being Fatherhood.
“What are you saying?” You dared ask, your face suddenly pale because of the terrible things he implied.   “I don’t want to be a father, Y/N.” He declared looking at you right in the eye. “I don’t want whatever you think is inside your womb right now.” You slumped in your chair, feeling speechless and shocked but most of all, insulted. Did he just call your child a ‘whatever’ and insinuated it wasn’t even there? Was he really denying everything? Saying you were wrong? “Take another test. I’m sure this must be some sort of mistake.”           You stared at him, bewildered and fighting to prevent your tears from falling as shock was slowly yet surely turning into sorrow and anger.
2.    Anger
“There’s no mistake, Leon. A gynaecologist confirmed it. I’m three months pregnant! Fuck, do you really think I denied this pregnancy on purpose?” There was a sudden knot in your throat, strangling all your words. Leon shrugged. “Honestly, Y/N, I don’t get how someone cannot realize they’re pregnant.”             “Simple. Imagine your boyfriend almost dying in a bombing attack in DC, then pushing you out when you try to help him. Then one day, after an entire month watching him falling deeper and deeper into depression despite all your efforts to bring him comfort, you realise that he left without telling you where he’s going. After asking a few people, you learn that he’s decided to take some ‘vacation’ but you know all too well that this vacation of his is just him drowning himself in alcohol in some lousy hotel.” You spouted angrily, feeling all your hormones boiling inside of you. “And I guess you can also add his four weeks of radio silence and the worry you felt when you learn that he who you loved so freaking much was almost killed again in another bio-terrorist attack, this time in New York. I guess that’s a pretty good way to make you deny a pregnancy!”   “Oh, so this is my fault?!” He asked, almost shouting, thinking your were accusing him when in fact you were just accusing the horrible stress and the worry you had felt for the last ten weeks or so. “I’m the alcoholic bastard who knocked you up and you’re the poor lost innocent girl? That’s what you’re saying?”     “Do you even realise how hurtful you are? Do you really think that is what I want to hear right now?” You tried to block a sob, in vain and Leon sighed in exasperation as he briefly rolled his eyes. He won’t have your crocodile tears right now. “Don’t force me on a guilt trip, Y/N. Please.” He said, frozen stoicism making his features as strong and cold as marble. “Weren’t you on the pill, by the way?” He frowned, and a tear rolled down your cheek. You wiped it quickly. “You forgot it?”
You tried to answer but you knew that the second you would talk it would unleash Leon’s anger and you were not ready to bear it. “For fuck’s sake, Y/N.” Leon gritted his teeth and glared while you instinctively braced yourselves, hands holding tightly at the armrest of your chair. “You only had one thing to think about! One!” He growled, a scolding finger pointed at your face. “Take a fucking pill!” “I may have forgotten once” You whispered almost inaudibly. “Oh, you forgot?” He scoffed before slamming his hand against the wooden desk as he brutally stood up making you jump in your chair. “And then she blames me for my depression. Fantastic.” You frowned. That’s not what you had meant. “Leon…”     “You’re as responsible as I am, Y/N. You may have not realised you were pregnant because of what I did but you are the one forgot to take a fucking pill. And, how could you forget? How could you screw my life, both our lives, like that?” Leon screamed as he walked in circles in his office, like a lion in a cage, except that he was lost. He was lost in fear, panic and anger. And he had no control over them. Hard to bear for someone usually so grounded. And that what was pissed him off the most in this situation. Not the news of your pregnancy but lack of control.
“Do you really think I want to be a father at the moment? Or ever? Do you really think our lives or this world are fit to welcome a kid right now?” His voice trembled, powerful emotions finally getting the better of him. A child of his could not be born in such an unsafe dark world. A child could not be part of his messed up cataclysmic life. Family was not made for him. He couldn’t be the devoted agent he was, save the world from awful monsters and have a normal life waiting for him at home. Leon had come to that conclusion years ago. And he even had accepted it long before meeting you.   “No. But it’s there now. So please, let’s figure out what to do.” You begged, understanding his fear and yet still trying to reason with him.     “What do you want to figure out, Y/N? I told you I didn’t want to be a father. And I thought I made that pretty clear when we had the baby conversation at the beginning of our relationship.”       Crystal clear. No living together, no marriage, no children. So were the terms of your relationship. A sacrifice he had asked you to make if you truly wanted to be with him. And you had made it out of love for him. But there was someone else, someone else you loved as deeply as you loved Leon if not more.
“So what do I do?” You asked, lost, using the pronoun ‘I’ because you truly felt on your own right now. “Fuck, I don’t know, Y/N. I don’t fucking know.”
3.    Bargaining
           But you eventually made a choice, one Leon never saw coming. And all he got was a letter; a simple piece of paper to explain the sacrifice you had decided to make. A letter not even truly addressed to him that made him realise that words could indeed hurt more than actions because, had he had the choice, he would have taken a thousand knives in the heart over those hundreds painful tearstained words.
                       “My dear baby,
           As I write this to you, you’re barely the size of a peach, taking a small place in my womb but already a big one in my heart in a way I never thought humanly possible. If someone had told me that one day I would love someone that intensely, that unconditionally to a point I would sacrifice everything for them, even my own life, I would have laughed to their face. But here you are, not even born and yet making me take a decision I never believed I would take. Giving up on the man I love.                    Yes, it’s going to be just the two of us from now on. Mother and child building a life together. Not the perfect family portrait but it will be ours and it will be full of love and tenderness. And I hope you’ll like it despite its flaws.                   I wish I had given you a dad but fate decided otherwise. He decided otherwise. But please, don’t hate him for that. Your dad is an incredible man. A man I love and will always love. A man that will always be a part of me whatever I do. A man that offered me the chance to be a mother. But he is not ready to make a room for you in his heart the way I did.                  I guess he would have under other circumstances but you don’t need to know them just yet. What you need to know is that your dad is a hero and that heroes sacrifice themselves. Always. Remember him that way. As a selfless man who chose the safety of the world – the world you live in - over his own happiness, because he’s done too much good for you or me to hate him.                        But don’t worry, my baby. While Daddy is making the world a safer place, I am here to make it a loving one.
           I love you,
           Your mum.”
That letter stayed on his coffee table for days, lying there for him to read again and again, next to a bottle of fine old whisky Leon would empty one glass after another, one regret after another, begging God –even though he did not believed in him – to bring you back to him.
There’s nothing worse than regrets, nothing worse than sitting alone with yourself and wait for sorrow to finally drown you, nothing worse than being lost in a maze of ‘what if’ and ‘if only’ and knowing that you cannot change anything.
What if he had made an effort? What if he had reacted otherwise and not like an ass? What if he had told you he loved you? What if he had said it would be okay? What if he had simply accepted this baby? How is life would be right now?
And he imagined it. He imagined himself at home with you in his arms, hand over your belly, feeling his child kicking and rolling under his palm. He imagined your smile, your soft giggles. Your happiness. And it crushed him. It crushed him because he wasn’t able to imagine anything else. He could not imagine the dark world he knew all too well. He could not imagine the fear or the pain he always thought he would feel in this situation.
And with regrets came guilt.
If only he had made and effort. If only he had reacted otherwise and not like an ass. If only he had told you he loved you. If only he had said it would be okay. If only he had accepted your baby. His life would be so much better right now.
4.    Depression
But you were gone and with you all his hopes of future happiness. You had taken everything from him, leaving him alone, in the dark and purposeless, wandering in his fancy apartment with a new bottle of liquor each evening.
Leon knew depression. But this depression, the one he was experiencing right now, was the worst he had ever experienced. Because if you were gone, it was not because of a bullet, it was not because of a bomb or a BOW. It was because of him. It was entirely his fault. And he couldn’t even change it.
You would not see him, not even talk to him, despite all the messages left on your voicemail or the letters in which he apologized and begged you to come back, telling you if was ready to change and that he was ready to welcome this baby if it meant you'd be together again. And it destroyed him.
He became a mess and he eventually did what he did best. He left, finding refuge in an isolated part of America, a lost cottage in the mountains to drink his sorrow away in peace, somewhere where no one would judge him or find him.
He was wrong about the last part. As one day, after weeks and weeks of radio silence and isolation, an old friend came to knock at his door to kick his ass back to where he belonged. Guess there was no escaping Claire Redfield.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing? The Leon I know would never sit there powerlessly and accept his fate that easily.” Leon would have sent anyone packing after a sentence like that one. But Claire wasn’t just anyone. He listened to her. “You want Y/N back? Then quit your bullshit, Leon, and go find her.” “She doesn’t want to talk to me, Claire.” She scoffed, taking his glass of whisky away from him and throwing the liquid away. “So what? You’re gonna stay here for the rest of your miserable life, drinking and crying, and concede defeat? That doesn’t sound like you.” He accepted her scolding, admitting she was right but he had lost the strength to fight.       “I know it’s hard, Leon. I do.” Her tone was suddenly so soft and comforting. “I know what it is to lose someone you love as deeply as you love Y/N. But you can still fix it.”   “How? She pushed me out of her life. She even moved out. She doesn’t want me anymore.” Claire sighed. “How naïve you are. She loves you. She wants you back. She really does but she doesn’t want you to accept this baby just because you feel like you don’t have a choice. She wants you to want it, truly want it.”
There was a silence, a moment of introspection in which Leon felt the fear and the anxiety rushing in his veins again, knotting his stomach tightly. “I’m not ready, Claire. I’m scared.” Tears misted up his tired blue eyes. “ I know. And it’s normal. But there’s a girl in a hospital out there who’s about to give birth to your child and she needs you, now more than ever.”
5.    Acceptance
           His head was dizzy, his hands were clammy and his legs were trembling. As Leon was following the nurse in the neonatology wing of the maternity hospital, dressed in a hospital uniform, he wondered if it was the smell of disinfectant or the fright he was feeling growing inside of him that was making him want to puke right now. Perhaps a little bit of both.     “It’s this way.” The nurse opened a door and waved him to join her by a small incubator in the middle of the room, a sweet smile on her face.
But Leon froze, completely petrified. He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t think. All he could do was watching at his five pounds of fear sleeping few steps away from him. “Someone’s here to see you, little angel. It’s your daddy.”         Daddy? The word made Leon tremble and small tears appear in his eyes, tears that instantly grew bigger when the small creature finally moved its tiny arms. “Many fathers are afraid when they come here. But I assure you there’s nothing to fear. Your baby is fragile but you won’t hurt her, I promise.” Leon’s blue eyes met briefly the nurse before fixing themselves upon the face of the little thing lying in the incubator. “A daughter?”  He had a daughter? He was the father of a little girl? This tiny angel in a pink beanie right there?   He approached her, instinctively, wanting so badly to see her from up close. She was so beautiful and yet so tiny.
“Would you like to hold her?” Leon nodded, without thinking twice about it and the nurse made him sit down and remove the top of his hospital uniform, informing him that it would be better for his daughter to feel his skin since it was warmer and more reassuring than any fabric.
That first contact felt weird but Leon was certain of one thing, he had never hold anything so minuscule, light and fragile in his entire life. It scared him for a second, afraid she would break, but the instinct to protect her was stronger than anything else. “I’ll leave you two alone. If you need anything I’m not far.” Leon didn’t notice the nurse leave, mesmerized by that piece of him nestled in his arms right against his naked chest, watching her with wonder and awe, barely believing that he had made this … that you both had made this. “You’re so perfect.” He whispered as he dared caress her soft tender rosy cheek. His skin felt so rough against hers that she grimaced slightly. “So pure.”
Her hands were so little, just like her feet. Leon touched her fingers, still impressed by their size and shivered when they suddenly grabbed his index. “Wow, how strong you are, little princess.” He grinned, looking at her weak grip until he felt a pair of eyes staring at him.
They were dark and blue, soft innocent baby eyes scrutinizing him with astonishment, discovering his face and bonding with him in ways Leon had never thought possible. He could see the world in those blue eyes just as much as his daughter was discovering the world through his.   And he could feel love, strong and unconditional, a love he would never be able to feel for anyone else, he was sure of it. A fatherly love. One that would make him move mountains just for the sake of protecting his child. One that would make him give up his life for hers. How beautiful yet how scary.
And he cried tears of joy and guilt, happy to have her in his life and yet sorry that he hadn’t be there for her sorry. He had missed too much. First echography, first move, first kick, first cry. All that because of fear and stubbornness. And he felt awful because of it.
A hand pressed gently on his shoulder. Leon turned around to see you standing next to him, a tired smile on your face. “Y/N”  You knelt by his side, softly caressing the head of your daughter who had fallen asleep in the strong arms of her father. “I’m sorry... I am so sorry. I should have been there for you.”             “ You’re here now. And that’s all that matters.”
Yes, he was here and he would remain here, by his daughter’s side and by yours, until his last breath. For first steps, first words, first birthday, first drawing, first day at school, first love, first heartbreak. He would forever be here for her and make the world a safer place for her. He had finally found a reason to keep fighting. And it was five pounds of pure love.
Little (baby’s name) Claire Kennedy.
Making his life brighter despite five stages of fatherhood he would willingly go through again if it meant he could hold her in his arms forever.
i wanna be known (by you)
part 2/2 || word count: 5.9k || read on AO3
When he leaves, Eddie checks his phone. Even after all that time he spent obsessing over what to wear, he still managed to arrive at the restaurant early. He left his name and Buck’s at the front so that whenever Buck arrives, he would be led right to their table. It was a conscious decision on Eddie’s part to sit so that he’s facing the front door, that way he can see the moment Buck steps foot inside.
In the meantime, Eddie focuses on keeping his heart from beating right out of his chest. This is the first date that he’s been on in years and it’s safe to say that his nerves are getting the best of him. It’s just that, he likes Buck. Really likes him, which feels almost stupid to say considering the fact that they’ve never officially met.
It is what it is though, a side-effect of living in a world where online dating has become a norm.
Eddie adjusts the sleeve of his light blue button-up for the third time in less than five minutes. Maybe he should’ve gone with the green long-sleeve instead. It was Abuela that convinced him that he looked more handsome in light blue. Then again, she might’ve just said that to get Eddie to stop fussing over his outfit and actually leave the house on time.
“Good evening, sir. Can I take your order?”
“I’m actually going to wait for my date to arrive before ordering anything.”
The older gentleman nods in understanding. “Of course.”
When he leaves, Eddie checks his phone. Even after all that time he spent obsessing over what to wear, he still managed to arrive at the restaurant early. He left his name and Buck’s at the front so that whenever Buck arrives, he would be led right to their table. It was a conscious decision on Eddie’s part to sit so that he’s facing the front door, that way he can see the moment Buck steps foot inside.
In the meantime, Eddie focuses on keeping his heart from beating right out of his chest. This is the first date that he’s been on in years and it’s safe to say that his nerves are getting the best of him. It’s just that, he likes Buck. Really likes him, which feels almost stupid to say considering the fact that they’ve never officially met.
It is what it is though, a side-effect of living in a world where online dating has become a norm.
When Eddie checks his phone again, he sees that it’s a couple of minutes past the time that him and Buck agreed to meet at the restaurant. Eddie goes into their text conversation to make sure he sent the right address. When he sees that he has, he locks his phone and waits. The restaurant is located in downtown LA and traffic is bound to be a nightmare, especially on a Friday night.
Twenty minutes later, the waiter comes back to the table to ask if Eddie wants to place his drink order. He asks for water.
Five minutes after that, the waiter is back at the table refilling the glass of water Eddie all but chugged in an attempt to distract himself from his date’s absence. He texted Buck to see where he was but has yet to receive a response.
Another twenty minutes pass before the waiter is back at Eddie’s table.
“I’m so sorry, sir. But if you’re not planning on ordering anything-”
“It’s fine.” Eddie is already out of his seat and tugging his jacket off of the back of his seat. He’s sure that his cheeks are stained red by the shame he feels about being stood up like this, but it’s nothing in comparison to the disappointment coursing through him. “I’m leaving. Thank you for your kindness.”
He leaves a $20 bill on the table and walks out of the restaurant without looking back.
Tumblr media
Buck doesn’t get back to him that night or the night afterwards.
Tumblr media
“It’s my own fault,” he tells Hen as they work together to clean the fire truck. It’s been four days since his failed date with Buck and just as long since he’s heard from him.  “I was stupid for thinking I could actually trust someone I met through an app.”
“You’re not stupid,” Hen counters. “He is for missing out on the chance of being with someone as amazing as you.”
He knows Hen’s trying to make him feel better, but the words fall flat. If he’s so amazing, how come Buck didn’t show up? Why did he ghost him? Is it something he said during one of their conversations? Did he scare Buck away without even realizing it?
The worst part is, Eddie misses him. Him, this person Eddie never even had a chance to meet. But it’s true. There’s a Buck-shaped void in Eddie’s life, one that he’s struggling to fill. He got used to their daily phone calls and texts and losing both so suddenly has left Eddie feeling like an addict being forced to quit his habit cold turkey.
Out of the corner of his eye, Eddie catches Chim making his way over to them. The last thing he wants is someone else weighing in on this whole situation. “Can we drop this?”
Hen looks less than pleased by the request but does as she’s asked. “Hey, Chim.”
“Did you guys hear about that big accident that happened Friday night?” Chim asks, in lieu of a greeting.
Eddie visibly winces at the mention of Friday and Hen places a reassuring hand on his shoulder, never once taking her eye off of Chim. “No, what happened?”
“Apparently there was some kind of explosion and a guy ended up trapped under his Jeep. It took-”
Eddie tunes out of the conversation and steps out from under Hen’s hand so he can move on to a different spot of the truck to clean.
Tumblr media
After a week of radio silence from Buck, Eddie deletes every single one of the dating apps he has on his phone. He tried using a few and reached out to a couple of people, but none of them ever felt right. And, with the sting of Buck’s rejection still weighing heavily on his mind, Eddie didn’t feel like he could fully trust any of the people he was messaging anyways.
He contemplates deleting Buck’s number, but he can’t bring himself to do it.
Eddie compromises by putting Buck’s messages on Do Not Disturb.
Tumblr media
That same weekend, May catches Eddie alone at a family barbecue being held at the Nash-Grant household.
“What ever happened with that cute guy you were talking to? Buck, right?”
Eddie stills and his breath gets lodged in his throat. He hates that he reacts so viscerally to the name. “It didn’t work out.”
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, Chris is playing with his dad’s phone as the two of them make the drive to Abuela's house for Sunday dinner.
“Daddy, your phone says you have eight new messages.”
Eddie’s gaze briefly meets his son’s through the rearview mirror before focusing on the road again. He doesn’t remember seeing any new messages when he was on his phone a few minutes ago. “Just ignore them, Chris.”
Eddie has no way of knowing that his son doesn’t heed his advice, choosing instead to go to his dad’s messages app to see who’s sent him that many messages.
Tumblr media
“Daddy, can I use your phone?”
Chris has made it a habit as of late to ask Eddie for his phone and his father doesn’t know what to make of that. The last thing he wants is for his son to become reliant on the device to keep him entertained. He knows how slippery that slope can be.
“How about we use those legos that Uncle Bobby bought you instead?”
Eddie expects Chris to be excited about the prospect of using his legos, but all Eddie gets is a pout. “Please? I’ll be quick, I promise.”
As his father, Eddie should be better at denying Chris’s requests even when a pout is involved. But there are days when Eddie will think back to how much of Chris’s life he missed out on while overseas and it makes it impossible for him to say no.
“Fine,” he relents. Chris cheers as Eddie passes his phone over to his son. “But you can only be on it for ten minutes.”
“Okay!”
Eddie makes it a point to check the time on his watch so he can cut Chris off exactly at ten minutes, before getting up to grab the lego set from Chris’s room. By the time he comes back, his son is smiling and laughing at his phone. Eddie assumes he’s either watching a video or playing one of the games he has downloaded on the phone. Since Eddie doesn't hear any voices or music, he assumes it’s the latter.
Two minutes before his time is up, Chris gets up off the couch and hands his father’s phone back to him. “I’m ready to play with my legos now.”
Eddie slides his phone into his back pocket and settles his son on the floor beside him so they can work on their building project together.
Tumblr media
“Daddy, my friend is having a bad day.”
Eddie, who’s in the middle of doing the dishes, doesn’t look up. He’s too concentrated on getting the charred remains of his attempt at making pasta off of the pan before it’s too late. If Abuela finds out that he ruined yet another pan with his cooking attempts, he’s almost certain that she’ll disown him. “I’m sorry to hear that, bud.”
“You have to talk to him.”
“Why me?” Eddie turns on the hot water in the hopes that that’ll make this whole process easier.
Christopher huffs, a habit that he’s recently picked up. Eddie doesn’t know where his son learned it from, but he can’t say that he’s a fan of it. It acts as a reminder that his son is growing up and, as much as Eddie wishes he could stop time, it’s not possible. “Because he’s your friend too.”
And that is enough to turn Eddie away from the task at hand. “My friend?”
Christopher puts the phone back to his ear. “I think my daddy forgot about you. I’m going to put him on so he can help you feel better.”
Eddie watches in stunned silence as his son walks over to his side and holds the phone out to him. Chris has that determined look on his face that Eddie is sure he’s seen staring back at him in the mirror. The shock of seeing that expression on anyone other than himself is what prompts Eddie to answer the phone without glancing at the screen to see who it is he’s talking to. “Hello?”
“Eddie?”
Eddie’s still looking at his son, but he’s not really seeing him. His mind is too busy producing images of a man with golden hair, unfairly blue eyes, and a bruise-like birthmark. “Buck?”
It’s been almost a month since Eddie last heard from the other man. He had assumed that the time apart had been enough to erase his presence from Eddie’s mind and dull the effect he felt upon hearing Buck’s voice, but he was wrong. His heart is beating out a rapid cadence and the hand he’s using to hold his phone is shaking slightly. And how, how can he still be reacting like this to someone he’s never met?
“Eddie.”
“I don’t- I-” Words are failing him spectacularly and it annoys Eddie to no end. After the first few days of not hearing back from Buck, Eddie had worked up this whole monologue of things he would say to him. But weeks have passed and everything he thought he’d say when given the chance has all but flown out the window. Then he sees his son, the same person who definitely shouldn’t know who Buck is, sitting at the kitchen table and Eddie knows exactly what he wants to say. “Why the hell were you on the phone with my kid?”
“I can explain-”
“No,” Eddie interjects, feeling all of his anger towards Buck come bubbling back to the surface. He never found an outlet for his emotions after everything fell apart and now it’s coming back full force. Eddie is mindful of the fact that his son is only a few feet away. If not for that, this conversation would be a lot less child-friendly. “No. You stood me up and now, what? You’re using my kid to get back in my good graces?”
Buck has the good sense to not say anything, apparently already prepared for the verbal lashing he was set to receive from Eddie. His silence only works against him as something else occurs to Eddie. “How did you even get in contact with him? Through my phone?”
“I found his messages on your phone,” Chris answers, too young and innocent to identify his father’s tense and poised to lash out demeanor. “There was a little moon next to Buck’s name that was hiding his messages from you. But I saw them, so I responded.”
A lesson about privacy is not something Eddie thought he’d have to have with his son this early on in his life, but apparently it is. Eddie lowers the phone to address his son. “Remember when I told you in the past that you can’t take things that don’t belong to you? The same goes for whatever things you see on my phone, including messages I get from people.”
Chris’s lower lip juts outs and he lowers his head. “I’m sorry, daddy. But I liked talking to Buck. He’s nice.”
It’s the mention of what sounds like an ongoing conversation between Buck and Chris that leads Eddie to open his messages. Right there at the top of the screen with a half-moon next to it is Buck’s name.
Eddie likes to believe he’s an observant person, that the time he spent as a medic on the battlefield made it so that he was equipped to take notice of minor details that others might not. For him, having that ability could mean the difference between life and death for those he was treating. It’s an ability he thought he brought home with him, but maybe he was wrong. Maybe it’s something he’s only good at when out in the field and not while at home with his own son. It’s the only way he can think to explain how he missed the fact that Chris was texting someone he didn’t know with his dad’s phone.
Eddie scrolls through the texts between his son and Buck then. There aren’t too many messages, only a handful of them sent every couple of days, but enough to prove that the two of them have been talking for at least two weeks now. Buck regularly tells Chris that, although he’s happy to talk to him, he’s not sure how Eddie would feel about it. Every time, Chris says that his father won’t mind.
Then, before any outgoing messages from Chris show up, there are a string of messages from Buck that were obviously meant to be read by Eddie.
The first three came through the day after Eddie muted their text conversation.
Buck (12:24pm): I know I’m probably the last person you want to hear from right now but I promise I can explain everything.
Buck (12:25pm): call me if you can?
Buck (8:59pm): okay so you haven’t responded which I understand. I didn’t show up for our date and it’s been over a week since you heard from me but please call me whenever you see this? You deserve better than me explaining myself over text
The next two messages come a day later.
Buck (4:05pm): i deserve the cold shoulder but I promise I can explain
Buck (8:42pm): please let me explain
There’s another message almost a week later.
Buck (6:45am): I really messed this up, didn’t I?
Another message comes a couple days after that.
Buck (3:26pm): I’m so sorry eddie
Then there is one final message from him right before Chris started responding on Eddie’s behalf.
Buck (1:42am): I’ll stop texting you now.
“Eddie?” His name is spoken timidly and it takes Eddie back to the nights he once spent on the phone with Buck. “Are you still there?”
Eddie scrubs a hand over his face, not sure what to make of all of the messages he’s read. Buck says he has a reason for not showing up, but he never actually said what it was. Eddie hates that, even though all of this time has passed, he still wants to know why he was stood up.
It shouldn’t matter, but it does.
“Yeah.”
“I’m really sorry,” he pauses and then adds, “for everything.”
The apology tugs at the part of Eddie’s heart that wasn’t ready, or willing, to accept that Buck stood him up and then ghosted him for no reason.
Eddie is tempted to say, ‘it’s fine’. It’s what he would usually do, brush aside his feelings and absolve someone else of their wrongdoing. It would be annoyingly easy to do, but he stops himself before he says anything because it’s not fine. Not really. “Okay.”
Neither of them says anything and it’s a strange feeling, being on the phone with Buck and not having a single thing to say. Eddie can’t remember that ever being the case in the past during their phone calls. There hadn’t been a month of silence between them back then though. The weight of that hangs heavily over the both of them.
“Well I should-” Eddie begins just as Buck says, “Is there anything I can do?”
“Anything you can do?”
“To make it up to you,” Buck explains, the words rushing out of him as if he’s scared that Eddie will hang up on him before hearing him out. “If not that, at least let me give you a proper explanation of why I disappeared like I did.”
Eddie doesn’t owe Buck anything, but he does owe it to himself to properly turn the page on this chapter of his life.
“Fine.” Eddie hears something that sounds vaguely like a person choking, but he chooses not to comment on it. “But I choose where we’re going, and I plan to bring someone with me.”
“Deal.”
“And, if you stand me up again, you have to leave me alone. For good this time.”
“Understood, but that won’t happen again. I swear. Thanks for giving me a second chance, Eddie.”
Tumblr media
“Thanks for coming with us, May.”
May shrugs and takes a sip of the caramel frappuccino Eddie bought her. “It doesn’t take much to convince me to come to Starbucks.”
He appreciates her nonchalance about this whole situation. Initially, Eddie only planned to have Chris tag along with him. The more he thought about it though, the better he thought it’d be better to have an extra person tag along with the both of them. What if there was a conversation that needed to be had between Buck and Eddie alone? Eddie couldn’t, wouldn’t, just abandon his son to accomplish that.
His first thought was to invite Hen along with him, but then he remembered the conversation he had with May about Buck and knew that she was the perfect choice.
“Mmm!” To Eddie’s left, Chris is smiling happily after taking a sip of his strawberry smoothie. “This is really good.”
“I told you you’d like it.” May ruffles Chris’s hair, much to his son’s amusement.
Eddie wants to be strong enough to not glance at the coffee shop’s entrance every few seconds, but he’s not. This is only too reminiscent of the night Buck stood him up and he’s not ready for things to play out like that again.
“Eddie, you alright?”
It’s May that asks the question, but it’s both her and Chris who are carefully watching Eddie.
“I’m fine.” May pointedly stares at him, putting him on the defensive “What? I am.”
She doesn’t say anything, her gaze catching on something that leads her to push her chair back and walk towards the front of the coffee shop. He tracks her movements, unsure of what motivated the sudden need to get it up. It’s not until she pulls the door open and holds it that he understands. The person who’s walking inside is on crutches and had no way of opening the door himself.
It’s not just anyone that she’s holding the door open for though, it’s Buck.
Eddie learned early on in life that it’s rude to stare, but he can’t help himself. How is it possible that Buck looks even better in person? Aren’t pictures supposed to be more flattering than real-life?
May must also recognize him because she’s the one who leads Buck to the table where Eddie and Chris are sitting. She grabs a chair for him so he can join them before taking her seat beside Eddie again. Eddie is sure they’re quite the sight - him in the middle being flanked by a teenager and a child sitting across from a man who easily towers over all three of them and looks like he’s made up entirely of muscle.
“Hi,” Buck greets, resting his crutches against the table. They’re almost twice as tall as Chris’s crutches.
It’s jarring to hear his voice in person when Eddie’s only ever heard him speak over the phone. “Hi.”
“You didn’t tell me you have crutches too!” Chris exclaims a little too loudly. A couple of heads turn in their direction, but Chris pays them no mind.
Buck’s smile is soft as he looks over at Chris and oh, that’s really not fair. Eddie became familiar with Buck’s smile through the photos he used for his dating profile, but this is different. Not only is Eddie seeing it in person for the first time, it’s being directed at the most important person in Eddie’s life - his son. “And you must be Christopher, it’s nice to finally meet you.”
“What happened to your leg?”
“Chris,” Eddie warns, even though it’s the same question on his mind. As far as he knew, there had never been anything wrong with Buck’s leg.
“I’m May,” May cuts in, saving them from what could’ve been an awkward conversation and holding out her hand for Buck to shake. He does, seemingly unphased by the people Eddie decided to bring along with him.
“Buck. Thanks for holding the door open for me back there.”
“Sure.” She stands up again and Eddie wonders if there’s someone else she’s about to hold the door open for. Instead, she grabs her drink and Chris’s. “Chris and I are gonna go sit at that empty table over there so you guys can talk.”
Chris goes willingly, allowing May to help him get his crutches on so they can walk over to the opposite end of the coffee shop. She lets Chris take the lead but turns back around momentarily to address Buck, “don’t you dare hurt him again.”
“Did she just threaten me?” Buck asks once May is out of earshot.
Eddie’s really glad he chose to bring her along. “I think so.”
“I’m pretty sure she’s only a teenager, but I’m still feeling intimidated.”
“You probably should. Her mom’s a cop.”
Eddie shouldn’t take joy in the way that Buck’s eyes widen at that piece of information, but he does. Good, let him squirm. It might put them back on equal footing because right now Eddie is disarmed by just how attractive Buck is, especially this close-up. How and why is someone allowed to have eyes that are that blue?
“Thanks for agreeing to meet me.”
“Mhm.”
Buck rubs the back of his neck. Is that a nervous tick that he’s done before while on the phone with Eddie? “Can I get you anything? A drink? Scone? Cookie?”
“I’m fine.” Then, because they’re here for a reason, he says, “so, that explanation I was offered?”
“Right.” Buck tries to adjust his position, but in doing so, he accidentally knocks his cast against the pole below the table. He winces and Eddie almost does the same. “I was on my way to meet you at the restaurant when I got into an accident.”
Eddie doesn’t know what to make of that statement. He was ready for some sort of pathetic excuse - Buck’s phone died, he confused the day or time of their date, an unforeseen but conveniently timed emergency kept him from showing up - which is why this reason has left him reeling.
“What?”
“I know it sounds fake or like a lie or whatever, but I swear I’m telling the truth.”
Eddie really has no explanation for knowing that Buck is telling the truth. It’s not like he’s had the chance to learn the nuances of Buck’s expression to parse out the truth in a sea of potential lies, but Eddie still believes him. It doesn’t make sense but sometimes the most important things in life just don’t.
All the righteous anger Eddie was holding onto for weeks seeps out of him in seconds. It leaves behind a void that is slowly filling up with a messy combination of concern, regret and sympathy. “I had no idea.”
“How could you?” Buck asks, smiling ruefully. He shifts in his seat again, searching for a comfortable position that Eddie’s sure he won’t find. Not with a cast as bulky as the one wrapped around his leg. He should probably be keeping it elevated, but Eddie refrains from saying so. “The details are pretty fuzzy. All I remember is one second, I was driving to the restaurant to meet up with you and then, out of nowhere, there was a loud boom and I was pinned under my Jeep.”
Something about this story is familiar, which doesn’t make any sense. Where could Eddie have heard it from if not from Buck himself?
“Considering the explosion itself, everyone keeps telling me that I’m lucky to be alive,” he continues, and Eddie can hear the ‘but’ in his voice. It’s as familiar to Eddie as the haunted look in Buck’s eyes, one that Eddie used to see reflected back at him when he first came home from his last deployment. It’s a look he still sometimes sees after rushing to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face after a particularly bad nightmare. Before Eddie can say anything about it, Buck blinks and whatever other emotion was attempting to bubble to the surface is efficiently cut off. “My phone wasn’t as lucky though.”
“Buck,” Eddie murmurs, hand itching to reach out and cover Buck’s. He knows trauma and the last thing he wants is to put Buck in a position where he’s forced to relive his own.
“My sister was able to replace it for me and I had it backed up to my computer so restoring it was easy, but I wasn’t in a talking mood,” Buck presses on, acting as if he hadn’t heard Eddie say his name. “I did think about you though. It was one of my first thoughts when I woke up in the hospital, but I don’t know. How do you tell someone you’ve never met but have very real feelings for that you’re in for a long road to recovery? That’s a lot to put on anyone - I couldn’t do that to you.”
Buck’s last statement is punctuated by a laugh that sounds like it physically pains him. Eddie wants to say something, anything, but he’s never been any good with words. He can’t even figure out if there is a right thing to say. Him and Buck are stuck in an awkward middle ground that exists as a result of online dating.
It’s something Eddie had read about before what was supposed to be his and Buck’s first time meeting. There were countless testimonials about people who had been in virtual contact struggling to find that same spark when meeting in person. It was enough to scare Eddie at the time, but not enough to keep him from showing up at the restaurant that night.
In all the articles he read though, there was never any mention about what to do when the man you’re supposed to meet up with ends up in an accident, doesn’t speak to you for a month, and then suddenly makes a reappearance.
“Anyways,” Buck says, eyes darting down to the table. “I get it. To you, it seemed like I stood you up and then ghosted you and that’s pretty unforgivable. I just wanted to apologize for that and I’m really glad you gave me the chance to do so.”
Buck keeps his eyes downcast and that’s when Eddie realizes this is it, this is everything that Buck showed up today to tell him. There’s nothing else to be said and it leaves Eddie with a steadily growing pit in his stomach.
This isn’t the way things were supposed to work out. They shouldn’t be meeting up for the first time a month after what should’ve been their first date. Buck shouldn’t be sitting across from Eddie, unable to look at him. Eddie shouldn’t already be missing Buck even though he’s not gone.
In a perfect world, or at least a better one, Buck wouldn’t have ended up in that car accident that night. He would’ve made it to the restaurant like he intended to and whatever was growing between him and Eddie could’ve had a chance to continue blooming. But they don’t live in a perfect world and Buck did get into an accident on his way to see Eddie and how is it fair for Eddie to condemn Buck for something that was out of his control?
These thoughts all come at Eddie faster than he can fully reconcile them, all because it sounds like Buck is gearing up to say goodbye and Eddie’s not ready to hear it.
It makes zero sense that he feels this way. Then again, online dating didn’t make sense to him until he tried it out. Maybe this, holding onto Buck instead of letting him go again, is something else that won’t make sense until Eddie tries it.
And that’s the truth of the matter here, isn’t it? Eddie lost his chance with Buck once thanks to a freak accident and now that a second chance has appeared seemingly out of thin air, Eddie’s not ready to let go again.
He doesn’t know what to say, so he decides to repeat some of the words Buck had spoken earlier, the same ones that Eddie’s brain had latched onto the moment they were said. “Very real feelings, huh?”
Eddie sure as hell has never been one to vocalize the way he feels and it’s refreshing to come across someone that does. Then again, haven’t conversations with Buck always been this way? Him speaking exactly what’s on his mind while Edde sat back and wondered what it would take for him to do the same?
“That’s what you took away from everything I just told you?” Buck’s cheeks are a light shade of pink when he says this and Eddie decides he likes that much more than the sad eyes and the goodbye in Buck’s voice from earlier.
“Is there anything else about that statement that I should’ve focused on?”
There’s not a hint of hesitation in Buck's voice only seconds later when he responds. “No, I guess not.”
“Good.”
“Good.”
They stare at each other in companionable silence then and something warm settles in Eddie’s chest. He can’t give it a name, not yet. All he knows is that it’s been too long since he last felt it and what are the odds that it would come back to him in a coffee shop of all places? It’s annoyingly cliché and, if anyone were to question Eddie about it, he’d deny it until his dying breath.
“Does this mean you forgive me?”
Buck sounds hopeful and it tugs at a chord deep within Eddie’s heart, as if the younger man believes that forgiveness is something he must earn and that’s not readily deserved. It’s something Eddie knows all too well. It’s also something he's willing to give Buck. no additional questions asked.
“It means there’s nothing to forgive.”
This time Eddie does reach for Buck’s hand. Buck’s fingers slide within the gaps of Eddie’s with the kind of familiarity that should only exist between couples who have known each other much longer than Buck and Eddie have. Then again, the two have known each other, albeit virtually, for a fair amount of time. There’s more merit to that than Eddie realized.
It might be too soon to think this, but Eddie believes this - holding Buck’s hand -  is something he can get used to.
“Thank you for giving me a second chance.”
“Thank you for striking up a conversation with my son.”
The statement is ridiculous if Buck’s laughter is anything to go off of, but it’s also the truth. Without Christopher, none of this would be possible. Eddie wouldn’t be seated here, across from the man who’s stupid dating profile bio and indescribable good looks were, and still are, almost too good to be true.
“Do you think we should invite Chris and the cop’s daughter back to the table? They’re very openly staring at us.”
When Eddie follows Buck’s gaze, he sees that the younger man is correct. Both Chris and May are scrutinizing them. May much more so than Chris, but it’s obvious that they’re both staring. “I think you’re right.”
With a subtle nod on Eddie’s part, May jumps out of her seat and helps Chris do the same. Her patience with his son is something Eddie refuses to ever overlook. She makes sure to carry Chris’s unfinished drink for him as the two of them make their way back to the table. May helps Chris get comfortable in the seat beside his father before reclaiming her seat on the other side of Eddie.
“Looks like you two worked things out.” May says, her brown eyes focused on Eddie and Buck’s intertwined hands.
Buck tugs loosely on Eddie’s hand, maybe to let go of his hand to make things a little less obvious, but Eddie doesn’t let him. Now that he has committed to giving things another shot, he refuses to let anything deter him. That includes an over-invested teenager and her too-observant eyes. He can trust May to keep this from her mother and stepfather for now, even if it means bribing her with more trips to Starbucks in the future.
“It looks like we did.”
Then. because his son is too smart for his own good, Chris also notices that Eddie and Buck’s hands are clasped over the table between them. “Does this mean you like him too, daddy?”
Buck looks far more amused than he has any right to. It’s not fair but, at the same time, it’s such a welcome contrast from the way Buck had looked earlier that Eddie has no desire to voice his objections. “I do, buddy.”
“You see. I told you he was your friend.” Eddie would be exasperated by his son’s know-it-all tone if not for the fact that it’s entirely warranted. “Can we keep him?”
Eddie should probably correct Chris, explain that Buck is a person and not an object that can be kept. He doesn’t only because, as his mind has a tendency to do, Eddie immediately starts thinking about worst case scenarios. In this case, it’s one Eddie already experienced. It consisted of a long month full of casting frequent glances at a silent phone and nights where he wished a soothing voice might fill his ears and help lull him to sleep.
Buck squeezes Eddie’s hand, bringing him back to the present and to his son who’s still expectantly waiting for his father’s answer.
Before saying anything, Eddie takes a moment to take in his surroundings. His son’s curious stare, May’s knowing smile and, finally, Buck’s encouraging grin. It’s not logical for Eddie to already be imagining a ‘Forever’ in his future with this man who he still has so much to learn about, but that’s not stopping him from doing so anyways.
“I really hope so, Chris.”
Lover - part 3
Tumblr media
You and Niall finally plan your first official date, but what happens when someone t-bones you all on the way to the restaurant?
Trigger warning: car crash!
hello everyone! here is the part 3 you’ve all been waiting for! i kinda gave away the ending just now but car crashes are very serious and i would never want to trigger or offend anyone so i figured it was best to have the warning just in case! its definitely not graphic at all, just a short description of what happened, but it still deserves the warning because the topic can be sensitive to some. but thank you for reading and lmk what you think! enjoy! //
The second you heard your phone ding, you immediately jumped up from the couch and grabbed your phone from the coffee table. Taking a look at the screen, you saw that Niall had finally texted you. A huge grin spread across your lips and you began to feel giddy with excitement.
After the incident, you didn’t want to text him first. You decided to wait until he texted you. After all, you were the first one to confess your feelings and you didn’t want to seem clingy. Even though he was your best friend and had known you for years, the circumstances were different now. It was a little past noon when you got the text and you would be lying if you said you weren’t waiting all morning for his name to pop up on your screen.
The text read, Hey what are ya doing ?
You replied with, Nothing, just watching netflix
Can we facetime?
Sure!
Not long after, his name popped up at the top of your screen, the silly profile picture you chose for his contact filling the rest of your screen. You clicked the accept button right away, impatiently waiting for it to load. His beautiful face soon appeared on the screen and you smiled, "Hey."
"Hey, how are ya?" he asked sweetly, showing you his pearly whites.
You could tell by the background that he had sat his phone against something on his coffee table in the living room. He was sitting on his big, creme colored couch, his black, 8-chaired dining table sitting behind him. The big windows showed off beautiful view of his backyard. The light from them making it hard to see him clearly. The small droplets of sprinkled rain that fell from the light grey clouds in the blue sky painted the glass. You smiled, “Good, thank you, how are you?”
"'m good." he smiled.
You guys talked for a little bit, laughing at stupid things each other said, the usual things you all would talk about. But once the conversation started to die down, he brought up the big question, "So, are we goin' out sometime or ya change yer mind?"
You giggled, "No, I'm up for it as long as you still wanna try it out."
"Alrighty, well where do ya wanna go?" he asked.
"I'm good with anything honestly, we could go get food, or we could go do something fun like bowling, or go t' like a drive-in movie," you hummed, throwing out a bunch of ideas.
"I'll do whatever. Yer da woman, you decide."
You rolled your eyes at him playfully because you know he knows how much you hate making group decisions like this, but you kept throwing out ideas, hoping that one would catch his attention and he'd choose.
"We could go putt-putting," you suggested.
"Y/N, ya know I suck at that," he replied, “I hate the clubs they give ya.”
"Yeah, that's why I wanna go, so I can beat you."
"I can't fuckin' stand ya," he giggled at you, shaking his head disapprovingly.
You chuckled back and there was a couple of minutes of silence before he spoke up again, "Ooh, how 'bout we go t' dat new brunch place in da city, know ya mentioned wantin' t' try dat."
"Oh, that's right! I forgot that had finally opened. Yeah, let's do that!"
"Okay, I've got a bunch of promo t' do fer me new single dis week, but 'm good dis weekend," he told you and you felt your heart beating out of your chest because you couldn't believe this was actually happening, but you were so happy that it was.
"I can do this weekend," you nodded.
"Okay, Saturday?"
"Perfect. What time?"
“Mmm, I dunno yet. Can we figure that out later in the week?” he asked.
“Yeah, of course!”
“Kay, good.”
“I’m excited.” you smiled, feeling all giddy and tingly inside.
“Me too.”
The call ended soon after that and the moment your home screen popped up again and he was off the call, you squealed happily, butterflies flying around in your tummy. You couldn't wait. You had dreamed off this day ever since you and Niall had started becoming friends. You never really thought it would actually happen, but now that it was, you couldn't be more happy.
***
Beep, beep, beep. You woke up to the blaring sound of your alarm, internally groaning. You had set it for early that morning to give yourself plenty of time to get ready for your date. You were tired from a long, stressful week at work and really just wanted to sleep in, but you were still super excited for your hot date. The other day, you all made reservations at the cute brunch place for 11:30, so he was going to pick you up at 11:15, giving you plenty of travel time. So after clicking snooze a couple of times, you eventually decided it was time to wake up. After scrolling through your phone and catching up on your social media, it was about 9:15 when you got up out of bed to start making yourself look pretty for Niall. You definitely didn’t need 2 hours to get ready for a little brunch date with Niall, but you were excited and wanted to make sure you had plenty of time to do everything you wanted to do.
You walked into your bathroom, turning on the shower and your current favorite playlist. You began to get undressed before hopping in the shower and beginning to clean yourself up. You were never one to shower in the mornings, you always preferred to shower at night, but today was special to you and you wanted to smell super fresh for Niall. Even though he was your best friend and had seen you at some of your worsts, you still wanted to impress him. After washing up, you quickly shaved your everything before turning the water off and wrapping yourself in a big, fluffy towel. After drying off your body, you wrapped your hair up with the towel. You slipped on your bathrobe and laid down in bed again, letting the towel soak up the dripping strands of your hair as you turned on the TV and scrolled through your phone again.
After about 10 minutes, you got up and hung the wet towel out to dry. You turned your playlist back on and began to get ready, brushing and blow-drying your hair before putting on light makeup. You quickly brushed your teeth and swished some mouthwash before you heard your doorbell ring. You ran to the door and unlocked it, opening it to reveal Niall, looking as handsome as ever.
He wasn’t dressed too fancy since we were only going to a brunch restaurant in the city, but he also didn’t look like he just rolled out of bed. He dressed causal, wearing a plain white tshirt with the sleeves rolled up a couple a times. He paired it with light, navy blue khaki shorts and slipped on some white Reebok sneakers. His white apple watch adorned his wrist and he had his gold earring in, complimenting his face perfectly. His black Ray-Bans covered his eyes and his hair was styled slightly messy, but so sexy.
"Hey, imma little early," he smiled and you allowed him to walk in while he slipped his sunglasses off his face and slipped one of the arms of the glasses past the collar of his shirt to hang so he didn’t have to hold them.
"That's okay," you giggled, "Why didn't ya just walk in?"
Since you both are super close, you have a key to each other's houses and whenever you plan to go over, you both can easily just walk in without a care.
"I mean, I dunno, 's a date, right?" he chuckled softly, a light shade of pink arising on the apples of his cheeks.
"We're still best friends, this doesn't havta be awkward," you giggled.
"Yeah, I know, still wanna make it proper though, I mean if we're actually tryin' dis out I wanna like treat it like it's da beginnin'."
"Okay?" you narrowed your eyes at him, "well, hi, I'm (Y/N)."
Rolling his eyes playing, he grinned at you, "Yer so annoyin'."
You giggled back before humming, "I just need t' get dressed, then we can leave."
"Sounds good," he replied.
You went back to your room and went into your closet, picking out a cute, pink shirt and pairing it with a cute pair of ripped, jean shorts. You quickly put on some deodorant and sprayed on your favorite perfume. You put in some fake diamond earrings and ruffled with your hair real quick before calling it a day, happy with your appearance. You slipped on some cute, matching sandals before heading back to where he sat in your living room.
"Okay, ready?" you grinned, walking towards the couch he was sitting on, scrolling through his phone.
He looked up at you through his lashes, slipping his phone in his pocket and standing up, "Yeah."
He began walking towards the front door while you grabbed your purse and slipped your phone into it. You followed him outside on the doorstep of your flat. You locked the door behind you and you both made your way down the flight of stairs to the parking lot. He lead the way towards his black Range Rover that sat in front of your building complex. He took out his keys and he got into the driver's seat while you hopped into the passenger side. He pulled out of the parking spot and began the journey to the fancy brunch place downtown. The radio was on low as you both spoke, talking about anything and everything.
You were mid-conversation when it happened.
"Didn't she have a s - oh my god," you gasped deeply.
You felt your heart drop to your stomach, mentally preparing to come face to face with Jesus Himself as Niall slams on the breaks, a string of profanities leaving his lips. The tires screeched and you felt the car lunge forward as it slammed into the side of the other car. Your bodies were thrown forward into the airbags and you were in complete shock. A sharp pain struck in both your knees when they slammed against the dashboard in front of you. It all happened so fast, you hadn't even processed what happened yet until you heard Niall yell in pain...
"Fuckin' hell!! Me ankle!"
Once Upon A Miraculous - Part 2
Ok before we even get into the story here’s yet another warning to think twice before you continue. Jason dies. He dies in a gruesome, traumatizing event and even though I think I went over it very lightly I still think it’s pretty fucking graphic. I’m the writer and I. Had. To. Fucking. Stop. And take a break before I could continue with the story.
Violence and the results it can have on the body ahead. Madness from the pit and angst from hurt feeling of being replaced ahead. For the last time. You’ve all been warned so read at your own risk.
I’m going to trust that you all know your headspace well enough and for those that choose to read anyways? Thank you for going on this journey with me. I hope the falls between here and the end are worth the river journey and the lake we reach at the end (yes those are f*ing metaphors. I’m feeling philosophical at the moment)
Previous Masterpost list
————————————
“It’s me Nettie. I’m alive”
****************************
Jason was 14 years old when he met the Batman. He came across an unwatched batmobile. The tires on it could be sold for more than the average car and he had the tools on him.
One last check and he got to work. He was already thinking about the things he could buy for himself and his street siblings that he forgot the number one rule. Always keep a lookout.
The Batman caught him red handed with three wheels off and the fourth half done. After being forced to return the wheels to the car Jason was taken to the underground batcave. He met Alfred and the unmasked Batman. Bruce “fucking billionaire” Wayne.
Less than a month later he’s living in the manor and has been “adopted”. He doesn’t trust it. Rich men don’t want son’s and there are too many kids with stories about the horrors that “nice family’s” hide behind closed doors. But he’s got a roof over his head and food in his stomach. If Wayne thinks that will be enough to buy him he’s going to find out how wrong he was.
Jason starts small at first. If he can just get the man angry enough to throw him out he won’t have to worry about being brought back. Setting all the alarms in the house and making them unfixable was a bit of a challenge. Seeing Bruce’s face when he changed the passwords was brilliant.
It continued that way for a few months until Bruce finally decided if Jason was gonna be a little shit he could learn to fight better instead. Jason decided that if he was going to learn to fight he would take over the abandoned Robin role too.
Dick was not happy. The first time Jason got to meet the man was after he was seen as Robin. He came to the manor and yelled at Bruce, saying he had no right to give his costume and name to someone else. Jason listened from the second story.
As angry as the two men got neither came to blows over it. Dick ended the fight by storming out and he put the older hero on radio silence for months after but neither had any injuries from their disagreement. If Jason had ever even looked at his old man funny as a kid he would have a black eye and welts on his back to show for it.
Maybe Bruce could be trusted after all?
****************************
At 15 years old Bruce is engaged to Selina Kyle. Their on again off again thing as hero and thief where they danced around each other had been driving Jason and Alfred batty. It was nice to see them actually settle into their thing as each challenged the other and kept them on their toes.
When Selina said she was going to be spending the summer with the daughter of an old schoolmate of hers Jason didn’t think much of it. He knew she had a legit degree she used to assess the potential spoils of her criminal activities.
He arrived at Wayne Enterprises a little early for their lunch meeting. Bruce had told him they’d meet in the lobby so after greeting the receptionists he looked for a place to sit. In one of the chairs facing the doors a small girl looked up at the windows before going back to her book and writing something. No she was probably drawing with long pencil strokes like that.
Curious he walked over to see if he could look at her drawing. He could see what looked like an image of the stained glass windows on the page but the lines through them gave it a softer, almost flowing shape. Which was weird cause glass wouldn’t follow those lines.
“What are you drawing?” He found himself asking her.
She jumped so he’d obviously surprised her. His thoughts were captured by her bright blue eyes. In the light coming from those stained glass windows she’d been admiring they almost seemed to glow.
She said she was designing a dress while she waited for her guardian and the fiancé to return. This must be Selina’s friends daughter.
Lunch was a fun affair where the girl shared she would be designing costumes for Jagged stone to wear during his concert tour this summer. She would stay with Selina in Gotham from Monday to Thursday while she designed and created clothes she would fly to whatever city Jagged was playing in from Thursday to Sunday to be on hand during the concerts for any costume repairs that would be needed.
Bruce volunteered Jason to show Marinette around the city since it wouldn’t be safe for her to be alone. Jason agrees because it’s summer break and he likes the Marinette he talked stained glass windows with and wonders what other beauty she will see in his dark city.
**
He is breathless by the beauty she sees all around her. The joy and happiness she shines as easily as she breathes. Everyone she meets becomes a new friend. Even the tamer of the Rogues and the Siren’s who meet her are enthralled by her smile and her charm.
Kissing her was a completely spontaneous action. He had thought about it for weeks by then but she had said there was a guy back home she sort of still had a crush on though she wasn’t happy with how they wanted to deal with the liar situation. So he was resigned to keeping his budding feelings to himself so that he could see her happy.
It had been the night of the last concert. Jagged had Marinette come on stage where he officially introduced her as his designer and the creator of all the tour costumes to the world. She had beamed with a smile so wide that when she threw herself into Jason’s arms after walking off stage he had just pulled back and placed a kiss on her lips.
He froze when he realized what he did. Marinette had stood on her tiptoe to start their second kiss.
For a week they were blissfully happy and free with their affection. Multiple paparazzi got pictures of them holding hands, kissing each other or just cuddling when they were waiting. Jasonette and the Sunshine of Gotham blew up on social media.
Saying goodbye to her was a really hard thing to do. So Jason went shopping for something he could give her to remember him by. They had decided they would try a long distance thing but he was afraid it wouldn’t be enough. If they did fall apart from distance he wanted something she could use to always fondly remember the summer fling they had.
It was perfect. He knew it might be impractical but he was convinced that it would be the perfect gift for her someday.
************************
They made it work. They had talked everyday and he spent every chance he could in France with her. He met her parents and they met Bruce as well. Marinette had her school situation resolved following her return.
He was proud of her for sticking up for herself when all her classmates seemed ready to abandon the liar just because Marinette had a connection they could use again. Nathaniel, Rose and Juleka were all artsy like Marinette and he could see how their creative energies inspired each other and themselves.
He was a week away from his departure to spend the summer in France with Marinette and her family when it happened. A false lead led to his capture by the Joker.
(Begin Angst)
The first break hurt but it was bearable. He had broken bones before. His bio dad had broken them frequently when he was still alive. The fifth hurt as bad. He also had a concussion and several burns at that time as well.
What felt like days, weeks, years... minutes?, passed in a haze as he jerked with every new hit. He was a mess from vomit, blood, piss and shit when his body couldn’t follow his commands any longer.
He held to the belief that Batman would come for him. That his father could still save him.
When the Joker left, Jason was lying on the concrete floor looking at the bomb countdown. He knew he had to get out of there, he pushed his battered body past the point he could feel pain and struggled to the door. He pulled on it but it wouldn’t open. The rattle of chains on the other side told him why.
He collapsed to the floor, tears streaming as he watched the numbers countdown.
10, 9, 8...
I’m sorry Alfred.
7, 6, 5,...
I’m sorry Bruce.
4, 3,...
I’m sorry Nettie.
2, 1,
I love...
(End Angst)
He was only 16. He would never see 17.
***************************
It was dark. It was small. It was hard to breathe. He was in some kind of box. He screamed and hit the walls around him trying to get out, trying to find some air.
It surprised him when cold pieces fell from above him. It had a new smell. He focused his determination on that spot. More of the new thing came down into his cage. He pushed it away from him and continued. There. Briefly a breath of clean, fresh air.
With new determination he pushed harder towards the life giving air. He was able to pull his head and shoulders out of the box. He rested for a moment swallowing greedy gulps of air into his starved lungs. When he was able to continue he pulled himself from the ground and looked around. As far as his eye could see were stones standing from the ground around him and beyond those trees and underbrush fading into shadows.
He picked a direction at random and began to walk.
**
It was familiar. Grab an item, run. The actions came without conscious memory. The streets were cold but he was big enough to scare off the worst of the predators. There were a few small people, kids, that came to him for protection from the bigger people. He did what he could but it never seemed to be enough he thought, as he stood over another small, broken body.
“I can give you a way to protect them.”
He looked up. She was beautiful but her eyes were cold. Empty and unfeeling. But she had promised to give him a way to protect the little ones. He was willing to try anything for that power.
What was his name? How old was he? He didn’t know.
****************************************
Jason.
He remembered his name as he lunged from the sickly green waters that Talia had led him to. He remembered Bruce, his father, but he didn’t save him from the Joker. He remembered the Jokers laughter ringing in his ears as he stood over another broken child on the streets. And the new shadow following the shape of the Batman when he was an amnesiac wandering the streets of Gotham.
He had been REPLACED!! He fumed. The anger and resentment over Bruces inability to save him, to avenge him and his replacing him as if Jason meant nothing, festered and boiled in his mind.
When he left the League of Shadows his only plan was to go back to Gotham and get revenge for his own death and to hurt his so called father as badly as he could. If Jason meant so little to him then he would show how little Bruce meant to him.
**
(Mild violence ahead)
Their first reunion was in a fight over drug dealers selling heroin to kids. Jason looked directly at the bat, pulled his gun and shot the dealers in the forehead.
(Violence over)
“These are my streets now. I won’t tolerate kids getting hurt on my watch.”
He disappeared before Batman could restrain him.
For weeks they danced around. Batman trying to catch him and Jason using every trick he learned from the Bat himself to avoid him.
Blood flowed freely from the wicked and the corrupt. He was a villain in his own right bringing judgement and execution down upon the criminals of Gotham.
Batman always appealed to the better side of him, to stop his madness. Didn’t he understand that part died? The child that trusted in heroes to protect the innocent died at the hands of a monster. A monster that his father couldn’t chase away.
The RedHood was risen from the pits and unleashed upon the evil of Gotham.
He was 18 years old.
******************************
Months of their back and forth dynamic between RedHood and Batman passed. The Batman couldn’t arrest the RedHood but the RedHood couldn’t stop tweaking his cape to get a reaction.
Didn’t he care? Wasn’t he going to stop him? He was doing everything wrong so why wouldn’t Bruce do the same for him that he did for all the other criminals in Gotham?
It was when Jason had the Joker at the business end of a gun that he got his answers.
“Don’t do it Hood,” Bruce pleaded. “It will change you beyond what you can come back from if you do.”
“I’ve already killed, B,” his words caught as he gasped, fighting back tears of rage. “My hands are dripping in blood.
He laughed madly then, “‘Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?’ Who knew that bitch knew what she was talking about.”
“It’s the madness that’s done it Hood. You’ve barely held control before. But you’re fighting the killing urge and directing it to those that do deserve it.”
“And yes,” he interrupted before Jason could argue, “no one deserves it more than Joker for what he’s done to you. But if you do it then the madness will win. Please I can’t lose my son again,” he begged.
“WHY DOES THAT MATTER NOW?!” Jason screamed. “He killed me. I was dead in the ground and you let him walk. WHY COULDN’T YOU KILL HIM?! AM I THAT MEANINGLESS TO YOU!?!!”
“I COULDN’T!” Bruce yelled back. “If I killed him I wouldn’t be able to stop killing. It wouldn’t just be the Joker that died, it would be every criminal in Gotham who dared step out of line. I wanted to. I still want to. He took my son from me but I know that once I start I won’t be able to stop. I’m sorry that I’m so weak, but I couldn’t.”
The Batman, no Bruce Wayne, stood before him, head bowed in defeat as he admitted to his greatest shame.
Jason looked away before dropping the gun and walking away. He knew Bruce would take the Joker back to Arkham so he just needed to get away and think.
**
They worked to build their relationships anew. He couldn’t be the son Bruce remembered anymore, too much had changed, but he could be the son he was today. He could do what he could for the Replacement and make sure the kid didn’t get himself killed on the streets. The girl that joined them got the same measure of protection though she was better able to defend herself.
When he finally let go of thoughts of revenge he could think about a time when a stray spark of living Sunshine found its way to cold, grey Gotham. He finally looked up news of Marinette to see how she was doing. He broke down and cried when her wedding announcement to the son of a Parisian fashion house was the first thing to pop up.
Selina, Bruce and Alfred all encouraged him to take a trip to France anyways to get some closure, to say goodbye. But he refused, the smile in her eyes as she looked at her new husband in the picture convinced him that she was happy. And that was all he ever wanted for her, even if it couldn’t be him giving the her the world.
He was 19 years old when he made peace with his past.
****************************
He was 20 years old when news of the villain Hawkmoth and his defeat hit the international press. He was livid to realize that his beloved Nettie had been in so much danger just living in a city that should have been safe. That the Justice League had done nothing when the citizens pleaded for help.
It felt like the period after his revival in the pit as he stormed the halls of the WatchTower. His vision was in various shades of red and his thoughts just kept turning back to how Marinette might have been killed in one of the villain’s monster attacks. Hell, she probably did die once or twice only to be revived by the hero’s magic.
If he ever got to meet LadyBug he would shower her in appreciation for defending the city his Nettie lived in.
The door crashed and nearly fell off the hinges when he threw it open and stormed through into the Leagues council room.
“RedHood,” Batman said calmly as he stalked up to the table.
Slamming his hands down and leaning over the collected heroes he asked what he’d wanted to since the news broke.
“Who. Screwed. Up?”
“When footage of the attacks first reached the League, investigations were done. No lasting damage was left from the attacks so it was written off as a publicity stunt and subsequent messages were ignored,” Batman explained. “It was a phone operator that fielded these calls. They went based off the assessment done by the League and deleted them.”
“She could have died B. I was dead and couldn’t do anything but you should have been keeping an eye on her. You know what she means to me.”
Batman nodded, “I should have. The messages never reached me but I should have been keeping a watch on her regardless of that.”
“You’re going to make amends to those heroes for ignoring them,” Jason stated. “All of you are,” he added, including the other heroes in the room in his statement.
“Yes,” Batman agreed.
Jason jerked his head in a nod and left the room. Going back to the cave where he can do his own check and make sure Marinette was safe.
********************************
It wasn’t just the League that failed Marinette. Jason knew he was as much to blame. If he had gone to Paris? If he had seen her? If he had told her he was alive? Would she have suffered under Hawkmoth? If, if, if.
News of the divorce of up and coming fashion designer MDC and the son of the fashion mogul and former villain Adrian Agreste hit airwaves like lightning. In the beginning people claimed it was Marinette who left because of Hawkmoth’s identity. Adrian was fast to shut that down and own that he was the one to ask for the divorce for personal reasons. With what seemed to be an amicable break up the world turned its attention to the next sound bite.
He’d failed her again. Jason just sat by his empty grave as he cried when he learns about it. He argues with Alfred and Selina when they bring up him visiting Paris afterwards. This time Bruce supports his decision. He doesn’t approve and lets Jason know it, but he supports him.
Returning to the cave after patrol, Jason was the last to arrive. He didn’t know why everyone was gathered by the computer so he went to take a look. He didn’t hear what Alfred said as he walked over. Momentarily blinded by the helmet as he removed it, he froze when he finally saw what, no who, had his family’s attention.
She had grown since their first meeting, not in height but in maturity. She had traded the fun pigtails for an elegant braid, and jeans for a sundress obviously of her own design.
“Hi, Monsieur Alfred introduced the others but I haven’t gotten your name yet. I am Marinette Dupain-Cheng,” she introduces herself as if she were meeting a stranger for the first time.
It hurt his heart that she would do that with him, though he realizes why she did. She didn’t know. She couldn’t know that it was him under the mask.
The words wouldn’t come though when he tried to find them and tell her. He finally settled for showing her, hoping she would believe her eyes.
After she gasped in reaction to his reveal he thought maybe his approach was a bit boneheaded after all. Nothing to do but go forward from there though.
“It’s me Nettie. I’m alive.”
Marinette teared up but instead of breaking down and crying she ran to him and jumped into his arms. Burying her face in his neck she just murmured “You’re alive” over and over.
“Yeah,” he admitted. He held her as tightly as he dared. A little worried he might hurt her by accident.
When she pulled away he reluctantly let her go but it was worth it.
She gave him the biggest smile and he saw it again.
He was 21 years old and the sun was shining in cold, grey Gotham once more.
————————————
So I really got into the structure I used for the first chapter and exuded to use the same for this one. They end at different ages because Jason’s a few months older and this happened in that in between time (the real reason is sections were getting too busy so I add another year to his story. How do I rationalize it? Well birthdays are a thing so there you go).
I hope everyone enjoyed this wild ride. I do plan to do an epilogue chapter but that will have to wait until next weekend. Anyone have any ideas you can send it to me.
The Accidental Crush of Sansa Stark and the recurring annoyance that followed- Chapter 2 pt.1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Sansa? If you could date any boy counselors here, who would you date?" Shireen, an adorable little camper asked as she walked all of them to canoeing. Sansa paused. Was her developing attraction that obvious? One of the golden staff rules was that there were to be no summer romances or if there was one, to be discreet to the point leadership didn't have any suspicions.
"She'd date Harry of course! Have you seen the way he looks at her?!" Beth giggled. "They would be like Ariel and...Philip!"
"Philip is Aurora's prince, Beth. Ariel's prince is Eric remember?" Alys shook her head at Beth. "I think Sansa would be happiest with Sam!"
"Sam likes Gilly, he blushes every time he's around her," Osha spoke up and the girls around her nodded in agreement.
"Sansa should go out with Dickon, he's so handsome!" Minisa sighed dreamily while Lyanna rolled her eyes.
"Can't you all see Sansa likes...." Lyanna began before Sansa interrupted her. "Girls, I appreciate you all comparing me to a Disney princess and wishing for my happiness. But I assure you, I don't feel that way toward anyone here."
Most of the girls seemed convinced by her little white lie and forgot about their question within seconds. All except for Lyanna. Lyanna stood behind while the other girls went down to the canoeing river. She tilted her head at Sansa in curiosity and Sansa took a deep breath.
"What is it Lyanna?"
"I saw you look at Jon at the pool yesterday."
"Lyanna, I had sunglasses on. I was looking at everyone in the pool." Sansa scoffed, hoping the defiant little camper would drop it. But Lyanna raised her chin with a sly smile on her face.
"Maybe that's true. But I saw you look at him a couple of times today at breakfast and you didn't have sunglasses then. You get a big smile on your face when he's around like the Disney princesses do."
Perhaps I should tone it down a bit.
Sansa took a moment to collect herself and sighed. "Lyanna, Jon is my coworker and friend. I smile when I see all my coworkers..."
"It's different with Jon. That's the way my mom looked at my dad before he died." Lyanna sadly smiled and quickly ran off to join her fellow campers, while Sansa stood in silence.
——————————-
"Girls, can I ask you something?" Sansa asked as she turned up the volume to skype her friends during break time. Margaery was in the process of making an anniversary gift for Theon, Dany was painting her nails so they could be ready for her date night with Daario, Missandei was painting a portrait for Grey, and Brienne was ordering a knife for Jaime's birthday.
"Sure, Sansa!" They all sang in unison.
"Am I being too obvious if one of my campers can tell who I am attracted to?" Sansa spoke quickly, hoping they missed it. But judging by how they were all looking at each other as if they were in the Brady Bunch credits, they did.
"OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Missandei shouted.
"I bet it's Harry! Margaery surmised.
"I think it's Dickon. Did you see the pics Sansa posted that tagged him in? They'd be absolutely perfect together!" Dany sighed happily.
"Well, are you going to tell us who it is?" Brienne rose an eyebrow.
"It's the guy I told you all about that pissed me off a few weeks ago. We've patched things up and he's really...cool." Sansa blushed and saw their collective smiles.
"You never told us Mr. Broody's name, what is it?" Margaery inquired.
"His name is Jon, Jon Snow," Sansa responded, and immediately Dany spat out her drink. "Jon Snow?! You like him?!"
"Yeah. Do you know him Dany?" Sansa asked, confused out of her mind.
"He's my nephew," Dany responded and Margaery's eyes widened. "Dany, how on earth do you have a nephew the same age as you?"
"Remember my older brother Rhaegar? Jon is his whoops kid after he had an affair while Elia was in a coma." Dany shrugged.
"Oh yeah! But you've never mentioned him before, why is that?" Missandei asked in curiosity.
"I didn't know he existed until he came to live with Rhaegar and Elia four years ago. He's hasn't been around much because he was either going to school or working at camp." Dany answered and Brienne leaned forward. "Dany, what were you going to add about Jon earlier when Sansa mentioned that she liked him?"
"He's a great guy...but Sansa, he has a girlfriend. Her name is Lysa Tully. He's been dating her for years. I am truly sorry, Sansa." Dany's face was full of sadness.
"Dany, don't be sorry! I'm glad you told me before I made a fool of myself. Now I can be more cognizant of my actions." Sansa put her hands in a heart shape and Dany laughed as she responded with heart hands back.
"But damn, I wish it were different. It would be so cool to have you as my sis...niece in law. Seven hells, that's so weird...."Dany began before all the girls cackled in unison.
Before long, Margaery narrowed her eyes. That typically meant she was vying for information. "Dany, give us the deets on Lysa."
"My brother and Elia think she's a character," Dany grimaced.
"That sounds like how my grandmother would describe Mr. Baelish and Mr.Varys," Margaery hummed.
"Rhaenys tolerates her and Aegon can't stand to be in the same room as her. My experience made me want to slap her, honestly."
"What happened?" Brienne inquired and Dany sighed. "She made Daario feel uncomfortable because he's not from "here," whatever "here" is supposed to mean."
"Oh. She's one of those types of people... ew does that mean Jon is as well???" Missandei rose an eyebrow.
"No, not by a long shot. Jon is super passionate about social issues and has always been involved in some way or another. He and Lysa got into an argument after she made Daario feel uncomfortable. She ended up apologizing, though I didn't think it was truly genuine. I think it was only to show Jon that she was "improving." Dany shrugged, while Brienne, Margaery, and Missandei collectively sighed. Sansa bit the inside of her cheek.
Of course, he has a girlfriend. He's good looking and has a kind soul. Who was I kidding? Well, maybe I can try to be his friend at least. Yes. That's what I'll do and my feelings will go away. They have before and they will now.
After making her decision, Sansa spoke up.
"Well ladies, enough about me and my sad crush life. Tell me about all your individual plans with your guys!!!!!!"
———————————-
"Sansa, you should go! I'm sure it'll be loads of fun!" Her co-counselor Mya exclaimed.
The leadership team decided last minute to have counselor late-night swim and Sansa internally debated if she really wanted to go.
If I am trying to friendzone my crush, shouldn't I try to limit the times I see him wet and shirtless?
"I'm really tired, Mya. I just want to take a hot shower, it's been a really long day."
It wasn't necessarily a bad excuse. It had been a long day. It hadn't even been five minutes after Sansa ended her skype call with her friends when she heard Dickon radio for her help. Two of the girls got into a fight during canoeing and poor Beth cried the entire time after she fell backward in the river. The next skill area didn't fare well either after Minisa got bit by a brown recluse and had to go to the hospital. Then later in the day, the porch swing broke off at the merchandise store and Lyanna sprained her ankle. Sansa had gotten well acquainted with nurse Thoros. Because she worked so well with the little ones, she typically made calls throughout the week but never this many in one week.
"That's true but Sansa, you've been such a trooper today. You deserve a break." Mya reasoned.
"You were there too, Mya. I wouldn't have survived today without you, honestly. In fact, why don't you go tonight and I'll go tomorrow?" Sansa responded.
"Are you sure, Sansa?"
"Absolutely."
"Aww thanks, Sansa." Mya smiled and hugged Sansa tight for a few seconds before going to her room in the cabin to get a bathing suit.
"Oh by the way Mya, I'd wear the blue one. Harry blushes a little when you wear it." Sansa looked at her nails while Mya's mouth slightly dropped.
"How did you know?! I thought I was hiding it well."
"You are! I'm the only one who can really tell because I'm a big sucker for enemies to lovers so I can tell by the little things."
"...Harry blushed a little when I wore it last?"
"Yeah and I'm pretty sure he was going to say something before one of his campers jumped in the pool with his stuffed kittens." Sansa and Mya began chuckling as they remembered the sweet little boy who wanted to prove cats weren't afraid of water.
"Well thank you for the heads up, Sansa." Mya began to leave before leaning back in the doorway. "Should I wear my braids up or down?"
"Do whatever makes you feel confident."
"I'm going to wear them down. Harry Hardyng, here I come." Mya sang as she left the cabin into the hall to go change.
"Sansa?" a soft whisper woke her up and she could see Mya's outline by the bed. Sansa rose up on her elbow and she could tell Mya wanted to talk out in the hall. She followed her out quietly and then sat against the wall.
"Mya, how was it?" Sansa rose an eyebrow and a deep blush appeared on Mya's brown skin.
"It was wonderful. We... we kissed under the water. It was magical." Mya sighed happily and Sansa's heart leaped with joy.
"Did anyone see you two?"
"Surprisingly and thankfully, no. Everyone was distracted by Sam and Gilly. He finally asked her out!"
"Sounds like a good night for everyone it seems." Sansa smiled and closed her eyes for just a moment before Mya spoke up.
"Do you like anyone Sansa?" Sansa opened her eyes to see Mya have an eyebrow raised.
"Erm... not really." Sansa lied and Mya scoffed as she began redoing her braids.
"Are you sure? Because I'm pretty sure I saw you staring at your former pool duty partner a bit the other day. Is that why you switched?"
"For one, for some reason, I thought Jon was going tonight before I remembered he and Harry are co's this week. Two, it doesn't matter how I feel."
"Why doesn't it matter, Sansa?"
"Because he has a girlfriend." Sansa's voice cracked a little and Mya's face filled with sorrow.
"I'm sorry I brought it up, Sansa."
"It's okay."
"What's your game plan?"
"My game plan? I want to become his friend and try to friendzone him."
"Friendzone your crush, hmm. I've never heard of that before. How are you going to do it?"
"Ask him about his girlfriend, what he likes, try to steer from anything super personal, keep a healthy distance, and....I'll talk about guys I find attractive."
"Besides Jon, who else would you want to go on a date with at camp?"
"Not really." Sansa shrugged.
"Any guys back home?"
"Um sort of I guess? If you count teammates/friends Robb brings home during breaks. His is name is Pyp. He's really cool and kind." Sansa smiled.
"Ooh tell me more!" Mya rested her face on her hands as the girls did during storytime before bed.
"He's majoring in Civil Engineering. He plays left wing on the hockey team at White Harbor, he's pretty good. I wouldn't be surprised if he was drafted in the WHL. He's pretty funny and a movie buff."
"Why didn't you go on a date with him then?"
"I was scared after everything that went down with Waymar, that I was a little hesitant to date."
"What did happen with Waymar?" Mya questioned.
"I made a fool out myself for him. I wore different clothes, dyed my hair black, and I even started going by my middle name to seem "cooler" to him. I..." Sansa shuddered. "I gave him special favors in the hopes, he just so he'd finally see me. One day, he texted me to meet up with him at his house and I went over thinking that he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend. I got there and the door was wide open. I thought it was a bit strange and I went in, worried if Waymar was okay when I heard noises coming from his bedroom. I opened the door and caught him having sex with my former best friend Myranda. I closed the door and ran down the stairs. Waymar and Myranda came down right before I left. Waymar forgot he texted me and tried to apologize while Myranda just smirked at me. I asked her 'How could you?' and she said 'You're the biggest fool to ever think you had a shot with Waymar and I only became friends with you to get to him along with your money. Who would anyone ever want to date someone like you? You're a stupid and ugly little girl. Oh, you're crying now. How sad? No one's ever had the guts to tell you that? You're sasquatch with no curves or boobs."
Sansa looked down at the crown, while hot tears streamed down her face. Mya gathered her in her arms as Sansa sobbed.
"You know what Myranda said about you isn't true right? You're beautiful on the inside and out. Hell, I wish I was as tall and skinny as you." Mya whispered while Sansa shook her head.
"Mya, you're beautiful."
"So are you! Being tall sounds great, I don't like always having to crane my neck to look at Harry when we're bantering. The pool is probably one of the few kisses where he won't have to practically bend down to kiss me. Don't get me started on being curvy and having to find jeans that don't feel like they're not suffocating my thighs and butt while having a huge awkward gap in the back." Mya ranted. "Don't be hard on yourself, Sansa. You're amazing, you need to believe that. The girls love you, I love you, your other friends and family love you, and everyone at camp does. You need to love yourself."
"Thank you, Mya. You're right, I do need to work on loving myself." Sansa smiled.
"That's the spirit!" Mya high fived her and then they heard the door open from Mya's room to see Beth's face full of tears.
"What's wrong Beth? Did you have a nightmare?" Mya asked, her voice full of concern.
"No, I..." Beth's lip wobbled. "Miss Mya, I woke up and I realized I don't have any more underwear for the rest of the week."
"How many did you bring Beth?" Sansa asked as Beth sat down in between her and Mya.
"My brother packed me six."
Only six for Sunday through Friday? I'd pack at least twelve or fourteen... Wait! It's only Tuesday?!
"But it's only Tuesday Beth, how did you go through six?" Mya's eyes widened.
"I... I peed myself a bit on Sunday when I was waiting for the bathroom after I took my shower, so I had to change. Monday, I got my unicorn undies wet from the shower after I dropped them. I asked Lyanna to get some out of my bag. Today, after I fell in the water I got scared I was going to get leeches so I changed into my last pair. I just keep getting bad luck!" Beth started to tear up and an idea popped up in Sansa's mind.
"Beth, are all your dirty clothes in a bag?" Sansa asked.
Beth nodded and Sansa sighed in relief.
"Okay, I'm going to wash all of your dirty clothes in the washer and you'll have your five pairs clean again."
"Won't people judge me for re-wearing the same undies again?"
"No, it's none of their business and besides sometimes I wear the same undies when I don't take a shower for a day if I didn't sweat." Sansa shrugged.
"Same." Mya agreed and Beth looked at the both of them in amazement.
"Thank you so much, Miss Sansa and Miss Mya!" Beth hugged them both and went back into Mya's room.
"What. A. Night," Mya exclaimed and Sansa couldn't help but agree.
"Drinking coffee right before lunch?" Jon asked as Sansa filled her coffee mug.
"Yep. I'm exhausted, I had to wash one of my girls' clothes because she didn't pack enough underwear. She was upset and it broke my heart. Yesterday just wasn't her day."
"Beth right? She's a sweetheart." Jon smiled before he took a sip of his tea.
"She definitely is." Sansa nodded in agreement.
"Is she your favorite this week?"
"We as counselors aren't supposed to have favorites." Sansa attempted to be stern as Jon rose an eyebrow and narrowed his eyes. Sansa began laughing so hard that her nose snorted and coffee spilled down her nose.
She grabbed a napkin and dabbed at her nose, refusing to make eye contact with him.
Seven hells, why must I embarrass myself in front of hot guys??? Why can't my laugh be sweet and adorable???
"I like your laugh, it's cute. You should do it more often." Jon's deep voice broke into her reverie and she lifted her eyes to see a small grin on his face.
"You should make more dramatic faces and jokes then," Sansa smiled back and Jon laughed a little.
"Noted." Jon nodded and then his eyebrows knitted together. "I just realized you didn't go to last night's late-night."
"Nope, besides doing Beth's laundry, I took a hot shower and talked to Mya out in the hall for a bit."
"Oh, Mya? Harry had heart eyes when he came back to the cabin last night. About damn time something happened."
"Mr. Jon? Did you just curse on campgrounds?" Sansa dramatically exclaimed and Jon chuckled as he shook his head.
"I sure did, Miss Sansa. Am I going to lose points now?"
St. Elmo’s Fire (Billy Hargrove x Reader) part 2/2
„You know you don't have to drive me home (y/n)...I have a car.“ „Well Billy I do in fact know that but unfortunately you're completely wasted and therefore I don't give a shit. We can come back here and pick your car up tomorrow.“
„But you should be partying with the rest.“
„Nope... I actually wasn't lying to make you feel better. I really don't feel like partying and would love to just drive home now. So stop complaining and get in the car.“
„Oh you didn't tell me we were going to take the chief's car. What an honor.“ Billy chuckled as he tumbled towards your uncle's chevrolet.
You rolled your eyes, „Yeah Hopper was nice enough to let me borrow it while mine is getting fixed. Also I thought it might get us into less trouble if I was driving home your drunk asses in a police car.“
„Smart move (y/n).“ Billy noted as he swung himself onto the passenger seat. „Let's go get a drink somewhere. I don't feel like going home.“
„Since you just got kicked out of the only bar that would even sell us a drink, I really wouldn't know where to go.“ you chuckled while starting the engine and leaving the almost empty parking lot.
„Let's go have a drink at your place then.“ he suggested with a smirk on his face.
„I don't know when you forgot about the fact that I am living with my cop uncle and a kid with fucking superpowers but no, sorry, we can't get drunk at mine.“ „Ok then let's have a drink at mine, just one. I'll sneak you in. You can go home after that....I promise.“
„Fine, whatever Hargrove. As long as you’ll stop annoying me.“ you sighed, while turning the steering wheel, changing onto the small road that would lead to the Hargroves' house.
„I'll behave. I promise.“ Billy replied, putting his arm around your shoulder and giving you a kiss on the cheek, „You're the best.“
You wanted to reply something snarky but Billy had already turned up the radio to full volume and was now tapping his free hand on the dashboard, grinning like a maniac.
-
„So why are you not in party mood?“ the curly haired boy broke the silence as you stopped the car and turned off the engine.
„Huh?“ „You said you were not in the mood to party. Why's that?“ Billy repeated while lighting another cigarette. „I don't know.“ you shrugged, runing your fingers through your hair. „Everyone is going to leave after summer is over and I can't even seem to get into a single college that I applied for. Not really a reason to party is it? I had a pretty shit week to be honest. You ever feel like you're not accomplishing anything at all?“
„Well (y/n) I had a pretty shit year.“ Billy smirked, gesturing at his blemished face while taking a pull from his cigarette, „Yet I am still very eager to party.“ „Maybe you shouldn't screw so many girls that are actually in relationships then.“ you suggested with a dry laugh.
„It's not just stupid girls...it's my dad, school, the fact that I'm the dissappointment of the family and they would all be a lot happier without me and that I'm constantly fucking things up. The list goes on and on. So yeah I think I'm in touch with that emotion.“, the curly haired boy held his Zippo in front of your face, lighting the cigarette between your lips as he put his arm back around your shoulder, pulling you closer.
„Thanks.“
You inhaled the smoke, keeping it in your lungs for a few seconds before releasing it again.
„So do you wanna go inside and have a drink or did you just let me drive to your house to sit in the car with the windows rolled down?.“
„I'm good actually.“ your friend replied.
„Would you mind if I just kicked you out and drove home then? I'm really tired and in a shit mood, Billy.“, you sighed while rubbing your eyes.
„Don't worry too much (y/n). A pretty girl like you shouldn't be in a bad mood at the day of her graduation party.“ „Shut up Billy.“
„I mean it.“ he replied in a low husky tone, getting closer to your face, his striking blue eyes focusing on you, „You really are pretty...more beautiful than all the supid cows in this town.“
Billy raised his right hand, pushing your hair behind your ear while softly stroking your cheek. Before you could react in any way he had already pressed his lips onto yours. It was propably the alcohol and your overall bad mood that caused you to lean into him, returning the kiss without further hesitation.
„Billy...don't!“ you moved your head back, carefully pushing him away.
„What?“ your friend raised his eyebrows at you, „We're both feeling a bit down. Why not use it to have some fun?“
„Because you're drunk and simply can't handle the fact that you couldn't manage to get laid at the bar.“
„Well nobody likes having to go home alone. Not even you (y/n). I know you well enough.“,Billy mumbled with a smirk as he tried to kiss you again.
„Hargrove fuck off.“ you chuckled as you rolled your eyes, turning your head away once again. „I am very sorry that the great Billy Hargrove had to deal with so much rejection tonight but I'm gonna go now. Get out! Go to bed! Try to sober up!“
„So you really gonna leave now?“ Billy replied in a teasing tone, his icy blue eyes still only inches away from your face.“ „Exactly.“ you replied.
„Ain't gonna be that easy without these, huh?“
„Billy! Give me back my fucking keys.“
„Sure. Just take them.“, the curly haired boy replied cockily as he grabbed the waistband of his jeans and pushed the keys, that had been dangling in front of your face up until now, inside of them.
„Billy it's not funny. Stop being such an annoying dick.“
„Come on (y/n) just get them. Shouldn't be a problem if you really don't wanna have any fun, right?“, he kept on trasing with a dirty grin on his face.
„Oh shut up.“
You quickly reached towards the passenger seat as the two of you began to jostle for the car keys. You grabbed the buckle of Billy's belt trying to get it undone while he put up his hands in defense, laughing to himself.
„Woah there, don't get too excited (y/n). How very eager of you.“
„Give me back my keys and stop annoying me, Billy. You're such a fucking asshole sometimes.“, you replied, startring to get more and more unnerved with his behaviour.
„I always am and people love it.“ Billy hummed in your ear while pinning down your arms behind your back, „But since we're friends I'll be nice. You can have the keys. But only-“, he stopped for a split second and you could feel him grinning against your ear as he loosened the grip on your wrists and slowly lead your hand towards his crotch.“But only, if you tell me right here, right now that you don't wan't to have sex with me. And choose a better reason than the fact that we're friends or I am drunk cause I don't care and I know neither do you.“
He let go of your hand, that had been brushing against his jeans, showing you how hard he already was, this whole time and stared right into your eyes with a knowing look.
You didn't say anything. Instead you just ran your hand across his thigh, not shying away from his icy blue stare.
„Thought so.“ Billy mumbled as he pushed himself onto you, your lips locking immediately, exchanging passionate kisses as he positioned himself between your legs on the spacious front seat. You let out a sharp breath followed by a needy moan as he pushed down your pants and immediately slid one of his fingers inside of you.
„Did I really get you this wet that quickly or did you have dirty thoughts about me all along?“ Billy's low husky voice brushed against your lips. You could feel him smirking inbetween kisses as he pushed another finger into you, curling them up against your sweet spot, causing you to moan even louder.
But you weren't the one to just lay here and let Billy Hargrove fuck you as he did with all of his other flings. You grabbed him by the back of his hair, forcefully pushing him off of you, signaling that he should lean back in his seat. The curly haired boy did as he was told while resting his eyes on you in anticipation, licking across his lips. You quickly unbuckled the belt of Billy's jeans, pushing them down together with his underwear. You slowly ran your tongue up his throbbing cock, while teasing the inside of his thigh with your fingertips only to bring your mouth down only seconds later, taking him into your throat.
„Fuck.“ Billy hissed while grabbing your hair as you began to quickly move your tongue across his hard while moving your head up and down in a slow rhythm, „I know I've been an asshole tonight (y/n) but you gotta stop teasing me like this.“ „Make me, loser.“ you teased while looking up at him, „Let's see if Billy Hargrove is really as great as he claims to be.“
This time it was Billy that pushed you back onto your seat, adjusting himself between your legs once again while pushing your underwear down to your knees.
„I'll make you do a lot of things if I want to.“ he gowled into your ear as he pushed inside you, the feeling of him streching you out caused you to whimper with excitement. He was resting one arm against the window above your head, forcefully grabbing your hip with the other one as he began to thrust into you with a steady rhythm.
„Is that all you got Hargrove?“, you continued to taunt out of breath.
„Who would have known you’re such a fucking tease (y/n)?“ Billy smirked as he slowly pulled out, teased your entrance with his tip for a short moment only to thrust into you again. This time even harder, his rhythm getting faster and faster with every second.
„Oh fuck! Billy!“ you managed to get out inbetween your loud moaning, as you pushed your nails into his back.
„You like that? Huh?“, Billy growled, resting his forhead against yours, not daring to break eyecontact. He was visibly enjoying to see just how much pleasure he brought you in this moment.
„Fuck! Don't stop!“ you screamed. Billy responded by slamming his hips into you, fastening his pace once again, continiously hitting you sweet spot. You whole body was shaking and shivering at this point and you could feel him riding you towards your high.
„Fuck! Billy holy sh-“ you couldn't even finish your sentence before cumming hard, it felt as if your whole body was about to explode. The feeling of your walls twitching, clenching and tightening around his cock caused Billy to loose it as well. A wordless, filthy moan escaped from his lips as he came inside of you, filling you up with his load while riding out his orgasm, visibly enjoying every second of it.
„Fuck...“ he hissed out of his breath as he pulled out of you. Your foreheads were still resting against each other’s, sweaty strands of hair sticking to your faces, both of you breathing heavily.
„Well now I do need a drink.“ you mumbled out of breath while pulling up your pants.
„And as I promised you're gonna get one.“ Billy hummed with his husky voice while smirking at you, following your example, „Told you I'd behave.“
“And cut!” Dexter shouts and interrupts the silence between the two men in front of the cameras. Both men just ended the scene, a beautiful performance and two people falling in love. “Well done guys. We’re gonna wrap it up for today.” Dex turns away and speaks to one of the cameramen.
Taron grins at his best friend sitting beside him on the wooden stairs. He takes off his glasses and puts them in the pocket of the patch covered jean jacket, standing up. Richard stands and stretches, letting out a sigh of relief. It has been a long day on set and they are exhausted. Dexter comes up to the two and lays his arms around them. “You two were brilliant today! I’ll see you here again tomorrow at 6pm.” And with that, they headed off.
Richard opens the buttons of his dark suit and looks at Taron, who is checking his phone. They make their way to their trailers, laughing and talking about their recent shoot. Taron slowly stops in front of his trailer and turns to his friend. “Rich, you wanna come over today? The kids would love to see you again.”
Richard smiles softly and agrees. Taron’s wife has been traveling for work and their children stayed with his mother whenever he was on set. Since she was away often, they spent most days chilling on the sofa after a long day on set. Taron did get quite lonely in the evenings when he had no one to talk to. Richard sensed it and visited when his best mate needed it.
Not long after, Taron finds himself driving to his mother’s house. His vision blurs slightly as he zones out, quickly pulling himself back with a sigh. He was exhausted and his throat was sore from singing “Tiny Dancer” live on set repeatedly for the last 2 hours. He gets out of the car and stretches, hearing his back crack and pain slowly creep in. As he pressed the doorbell, he could hear the pattern of his daughter’s footsteps. A sudden sharp pain shoots to his neck, him letting out a painful moan. His body is breaking down.
He puts on a smile when the doors opens and his beautiful young daughter is standing in front of him. “Hello cutie. You alright?” He asks laughing as she hugs him tight. Angelina nods and looks up at him. He stares into her big dark brown eyes, identical to her mother’s but framed with his babygirl’s face. Her brown hair is tied into a ponytail and she’s in a light blue dress. Taron’s heart just melts looking at her.
The seven year old takes his hand and pulls him into the house. His mother greets him with a warm hug and watches him carefully. “Hey mum. I hope these two weren’t too nerve wrecking.” He says smiling gratefully at her. Taron was glad that there was someone he trusted to watch his children.
“Don’t worry about us, son. Hard day at work?” She asks, concern hinted in her words. He just nods and tries to hide his exhaustion. The last week has been filled with day and night shoots, leaving him with little to no sleep.
They walk into the living room where his three year old son is playing with his toys. Taron crouches down and regrets it immediately. Pain pulsing through his entire body, urging him to stand up. “Hey, buddy. How are you?” He asks the toddler and forces a smile.
Benjamin’s green eyes light up at the sound of his father’s voice and he smiles wildly. “Daddy!” His little boy jumps up and stumbles over to him. Taron pulls him into a hug and gives him a gentle kiss on his head. Angie rests her head on T’s back and wraps her arms around him. He could have stayed there forever, just holding his two children. Nausea begins to set in and he takes deep breaths, calming himself down.
“Let’s get you two home.” He speaks and picks up his youngest child. Angie takes his hand into her tiny one and follows him outside and to the car. He buckles up his toddler in his car seat and Angie settles into the passenger seat. His mother stands in the doorway, watching him with a soft smile. Through her eyes, she could see how her son fought against his exhaustion and hid his pain after a long week of working. Not in front of the children, he tells himself. They shouldn’t see how he truly felt. He wouldn’t let them.
Taron walks to the doorway, a worried expression settled on his face. He doesn’t want to overuse her offer to watch Angelina and Benjamin, but he didn’t have a lot of options. “Mum, is there a chance you could come over tomorrow night and stay with Ben and Angie? We have-“ She cuts him off by pulling him into a tight hug.
“Of course I’ll be there. And you should get some sleep Taron. You may be able to hide from the kids, but a mother knows her children.” She looks up at him with worried eyes but a small smile. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and chuckles when Taron lets out a relieved sigh.
“You’re the best mom. I love you. Goodnight.” He walks back to his car and gets in, driving off into the night.
“Are you gonna be home tomorrow Daddy?” Angelina looks up at her father with pleading eyes. She understood that her father’s job took most of his time, spanning from days to weeks at a time. Taron holds in a sigh, not wanting to break his baby’s heart.
“I’m gonna be home most of the day tomorrow, and then granny is coming over in the evening. Sounds good?” He glances over at her and she nods happily. A day with her father was all she yearned for. Taron relaxes and smiles, the joy in her eyes filling his heart.
Angie hears Ben calling out and turns the radio down. “Daddy, can you please sing for me?” His soft voice perking his father’s ears. Taron focuses on the road, thinking of something to sing that won’t damage his vocal cords completely. He settles on “Tiny Dancer”, his son’s favorite, and starts the first lines. Take 35, he thinks to himself. Taron starts swaying gently, singing with his heart and puts on as best a show as he could for his precious human beings that meant the world to him.
The kids were already in their pajamas when the doorbell rang. Taron changed into a t-shirt and comfy sweatpants. He opens the door and laughs when he sees his favorite Scottish man. Richard wears a hoodie and sweatpants as well, his hair a natural mess after being freed from the wig. “What are you laughing at mate?” Rich ponders with irritation in his voice, stepping into his friend’s home.
“Oh nothing. I just thought you’d be dressed properly.” Taron teases him and closes the door.
Richard stares at him, irritation shining in his bright blue eyes. “It’s 10pm and I’m at your house. Get off my ass!” He shakes his head and sets his keys on the little commode. “And just to let you know, you look ravishing yourself.” He snickers cheekily and smiles.
Taron just laughs and leads his mate into the living room. “Angelina! Benjamin! Rich is here!” Taron shouts and his children quickly run down the stairs with excited faces. They jump into his arms and Rich smiles, tickling them. They adored the Scottish man. Taron watches with a wide smile on his face. But he had to break up this welcome session, realizing their bedtime was now. “Alright kids, time for bed. Say goodnight to Rich.”
They both give him hugs and kisses and rush back upstairs. He follows behind them, going into Benjamin’s room first. The small child climbs into bed after struggling slightly and lays down under the covers, looking up at his father. Taron tucks him in and smiles, kissing his son on his cheek. “Goodnight Ben.” He smiles and yawns, his eyes closing fast.
He wanders into his daughter’s room, who’s already tucked in and waiting for him. He comes over to her side and pushes the hair out of her face. “Goodnight Angie.” He kisses her forehead and turns out her light, walking out and shutting the door gently behind him.
Taron plopped down on the sofa and let out a sigh. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His stomach was still hurting and he prays he doesn’t get sick. Richard chuckles and stands up, going into the kitchen and getting them drinks. As he comes back, Taron opens his eyes and laughs, an apologetic look in his eyes. “I’m sorry mate, I forgot to get ya something.”
“It’s alright mate. I mean, I already know where everything is.” Richard assures smiling and sits next to his friend. He has visited Taron quite often, enough to know his house like his own. He gives Taron a glass of water and relaxes into the pillows behind him. “You wanna watch a movie?”
Taron agrees but even doesn’t pay attention to what Richard puts on. He sits there, staring at the TV screen without following the storyline at all. His eyes are burning and his whole body starts to shut down. The last thing he remembers is tilting over slightly and resting his head on Richard’s shoulder. Rich lets him rest his head on his chest and puts an arm around him. It wasn’t the first time one of them gave up on the movie and fell asleep in the other’s arms.
Richard carefully changes position, cautious not to wake up his best friend. He puts a blanket over the sleeping man, leaning on him like a child. The Scott tries to position Taron’s head into a more comfortable spot, noticing Taron was in a lot of pain recently. Richard rests his head against the sofa behind him and closes his eyes. He breathes slowly, drifting off into a deep sleep.
He wakes up when Taron sits up and begins coughing roughly, moaning. Richard reaches over for the lamp on the small table beside him and turns it on. “Mate, you alright?” He asks and watches him suspiciously.
Taron shakes his head slightly, which meant a lot because he never showed other how he really felt. But he wouldn’t be able to hide it much longer. His eyes filled with tears as he continued to cough. He was pale and shivering, a fever settling into his body.
“I think you have a fever T. You need to get into bed.” Rich speaks concerned and certain. Taron just nods weakly and coughs again. Richard stands and makes his way to the kitchen. He turns on the boiler and searches the cabinets. “Taron where’s the tea?” He inquires, raising his voice a little and searching another cabinet.
“In the cabinet over the boiler.” Taron responds with a raspy voice. It’s evident he isn’t doing well. He wraps his blanket around his body and slowly walks to the kitchen island where he sits down with a grunt. Rich finally finds it and puts honey into a cup along with the tea packet and boiling water. He hands the cup to his mate, looking concerned. “Thanks mate.”
Richard looks down at his watch and sighs. It’s 5am already. He goes into the downstairs bathroom and gets the thermometer, coming back to Taron, who already guzzled down his tea. He plops the thermometer into his friend’s mouth and waited for the dreaded beep. It ripped through the silence of the house a minute later, making Taron flinch. Rich took it and turned off the sound and looked at the numbers. “Well you’re definitely running a fever mate. 104.”
Taron groans and rests his head on the table. “Shit Richard! I can’t get sick now. Not at a time like this.” He grumbles and coughs. His body aches and his head is pounding. How was he gonna be able to shoot tomorrow night like this?
Rich pats him on the back and helps Taron up, closing the blanket closer around his friend. “We’re gonna get you into bed and then we’ll see how you feel tomorrow.” Taron just nods and lets Rich lead him to the bedroom carefully. He falls into bed as Richard opened windows to let in fresh air. T sets an alarm for 7:30am on his phone, reminding him to get up and take Angelina to school.
Richard watches as his eyes close and he falls into a deep sleep. He grabs his friend’s phone and turns the alarm off. Taron needed his rest and Rich didn’t mind taking Angelina to school in a couple hours. He leaves the room, gently closing the door. He made his way to the kids’ rooms and smiled to see them still deep in their slumber. As they were walking upstairs, Taron, being the clumsy man he is sometimes, ran right into a table, causing the two to stifle their laughter. He chuckles quietly and heads downstairs, getting comfortable on the couch and setting his own alarm to 7:30am.
The alarm blared out hours later and Richard jumped up and groaned. Turning off the noise, he stands and stretches and goes upstairs to wake the kids. As they woke, they were surprised to see their uncle and not their father, but they got ready for the day nonetheless. He helps Benjamin get dressed and carries him and his sister in his arms down the stairs. Angie cuddles into his shoulder and closes her eyes, slipping back into a light sleep. Richard dreaded putting her down, but she had to wake up and eat.
“Have a good day Angie!”
“Bye Uncle Richard!” The two exchanged goodbyes as she walks away waving to her uncle. She seems so small compared to the other children. It was a challenge tying up her thick brown hair this morning but Rich managed. He glances in the backseat at the toddler in his car seat, who’s just dancing to the music on the radio. Richard smiles to himself and drives off, unable to understand how Taron created a mini version of himself.
Richard drove to his own apartment and carried Benjamin inside with him. He sits Ben on the bed with some toys so he can play, and then begins to change and pack clothes in a bag. After finishing up, he looks over at Ben and holds his hand out. “You coming lad?” He says and smiles. Ben reaches out to him and Rich picks him up, carrying him out to the car. They get back to Taron’s at 9am. Richard puts his bag in the living room and sits Benjamin on the floor and walks upstairs to Taron’s room.
As he walks in, he sees his best friend still asleep. Coming closer, he notices Taron’s face covered in sweat, his hair sticking to his face. He gently places his hand on T’s face. His fever still alive and burning. Richard goes and gets a washcloth soaking it in cold water. He comes back and wipes his face carefully, setting it on his forehead afterwards. His friend was deep in his sleep, staying still during Rich’s actions.
Benjamin and Richard were on the carpet downstairs playing with his toys when they heard pounding on the stairs. Taron is rushing down the stairs with his phone in hand. He looks at Richard with apologetic eyes, his heart racing. “Shit Richard I’m so sorry. I must’ve missed the alarm.” Richard laughs and stands, looking at his friend.
“Taron calm down. I turned it off as soon as you went to sleep. You needed more than 3 hours of sleep. Angie is in school and Ben has been chilling with me.” Richard says in confidence to his best friend.
Taron sighs in relief and smiles. “Thanks mate. I really appreciate you. I was losing my mind.” He sits on the sofa and Benjamin climbs on to his lap, cuddling in his lap. Taron holds him and smiles, but frowns soon after. “But I can’t do the scene tonight. I still feel like shit.” He speaks and looks at Richard.
“Don’t worry about it. I talked to Dex this morning. He’s giving us the week off so you can get better.” Rich sits next to his best friend and pulls Ben onto his lap, not wanting him to sit on his sick father. Taron silently agreeing.
“You’re the best Dickie!” Taron smiles wide looking at him.
“What are friends for?”
La Petit Mort pt.1
pt.1 | pt.2 | pt.3 | pt.4
Harley Keener/Peter Parker
CW: non-graphic murder, minor character deaths, non-graphic smut
read on ao3
_________
The room was silent, save for a steady drip and two heavy breaths.
The girl in the chair was slumped backward, arms hanging by her side and head back as if she was asleep.
A whisper breaks their silence.
"We should go."
A nod. Two people shuffling to get up. Dripping slowing then stopping. A door closing, a car driving away.
Peter loved the open road. The wind blowing through his hair as they drove, the sense of freedom, the scenery, it made him feel like he could breathe.
He was sitting in the passenger seat, feet up on the dashboard, head resting against the car door next to the open window. Harley was singing along to some trashy country song on the radio while he was driving and Peter laughed at his weird faces.
He was happy.
Road tripping the country with someone he loved, no obligations, no restrictions, just fun and long summer evenings.
They pulled up to a roadside motel as the sun started to set.
Harley keeps singing as he parks the car and they get out, laughs as Peter dances around him. They’re shaking with laughter as they enter the motel, and the lady at the front desk beams at them.
Harley did the talking as Peter leaned against him, head on his shoulder, glancing around.
They finish checking in and paying, getting the keys to the farthest cabin from the road. They dumped their bags there and went over to dinner, racing each other to the building and basking in the last few rays of summer sunlight.
The night was cold and smelled of pine and sand. Peter held Harley close to him and admires the boy as he slept. Even after all this time he still took his breath away.
The shape of his lips, breathing softly against Peter’s chest, his long light eyelashes, fanning out over his cheeks, his heartbeat against Peter's, his breath aligned with his.
It made him feel things he knew he shouldn't. Something more than love. Something they would both have to deal with...
The boy in the bar was a loudmouth and Peter wanted him bad.
He was bragging about how he could get anyone here and Peter was fascinated with his lips and his hands but most of all his eyes. They were like honey and they matched his golden skin perfectly.
"Harley," he whispered, just loud enough for Harley to hear over the music and the people talking.
"Him." he said as he pointed at the honey boy.
Harley's eyes lit up. He smiled and nodded, Peter smiled in return and kissed him quickly before walking off.
This was Harley's favorite part. Or well, one of his favorite parts. Watching Peter hunt.
Because he did it so beautifully, all soft eyes and coy smiles, pretty words and prettier moves. The boy was his in no time.
What came next was definitely Harley's favorite part. The kill.
The boy was beautiful. So, so beautiful. Everything about him was perfect.
The way his hair stuck to his sweaty forehead, the way he panted, the way he screamed. It was all so beautiful.
"Harley, come look at this." Peter said, voice full of wonder.
Harley stopped what he was doing and bent down to Peter, heads next to each other so he saw exactly what he meant.
"Look" he repeated before gently placing his hand on golden abs.
The boy shivered at the touch.
The movement was soft, loving, metal over skin.
Crimson was Harley's favorite color and this boy had such a beautiful shade of it. The scent of iron filled the air and Harley sucked in a breath.
Peter's eyes were wide with awe and when Harley painted his lips in the boy's crimson he couldn't help but kiss him.
It was warm and tangy and bitter and they loved it with every fiber of their being.
Honey boy was dying and they were in love with his death.
La petit mort as the French called it.
When they laid the boy down on their bed, chest open and eyes empty after all the bliss they couldn't help but marvel at their work
They whispered sweet nothings to him and each other as they laid down left and right of the boy.
He didn't say anything back but that was okay, he didn't have to. In fact, they preferred it if he didn't.
The morning was cold and rainy.
Peter and Harley took a shower together before they left for the open road again.
The boy was still in their bed but they didn't care anymore.
They were gone within the hour and miles away by sunrise.
They drove for days, weeks even. Rarely stopping anywhere besides small motels. Honey boy had been talking.
But the further they went away from him the less he mattered and after a while they forgot all about him. Or at least they pretended to.
By the time they reached Washington Peter was all cut up and Harley felt vaguely broken. But they were so in love.
They ran through the rainy streets of Seattle and made love in the damp dark forests. And after weeks, maybe even months, the longest they had ever gone without, they found another love.
The rain had been warm on their skin as they touched each other in the bright meadow. Peter looked breathtaking in the light and Harley sat up to kiss the blue and purple roses blooming on his stomach as Peter moved to the rhythm of the rain.
Afterwards, when they laid down in the grass, that was when they heard him. A sturdy frame, stumbling through the trees at the edge of the clearing, freezing at the sight of them. Icy blue eyes from underneath copper hair.
He reminded them so much of...
He seemed like a faery almost, with those leaves tangled in his long hair and those eyes... Like the purest forest stream.
Peter got up gracefully and Harley followed him, a hand on his shoulder as they walked towards the faery boy like deer, all elegance and innocence.
They took his hands and pulled him back with them towards the light.
So much like...
The boy seemed almost as enchanted by them as they were with him and mirrored their every movement.
He lost his jacket as Harley kissed him, and his shirt when Peter reached around from behind him and guided his lips from Harley's to his own. He lost his trousers when Harley kissed his chest and Peter kissed his neck, he lost his breath inside Peter and Harley inside him.
He lost his life with love and two knives in his heart.
They made him flower crowns and daisy chains. They danced with him and painted themselves in his crimson, only for their drawings to be washed away by the rain moments later.
They laid on the forest floor with him, naked as the day they were born, and told him stories and faery tales.
Magic for their faery boy.
But when the rain stopped so did their love.
Faery boy was lying on the ground, flowers in his hair and drawings on his skin, the last few raindrops falling from the leaves high above into his wide-open eyes and running down his cheeks like silver tears. He looked like a fallen statue of a civilization thought to be long lost but in fact very much alive in the darkest corners of the woods.
Peter had taken his shirt and Harley had taken his jacket.
The boy didn't mind and Peter was in love with the painting of red and green and silver they had made on it. Harley took the jacket because it smelled like moss and rain and iron and faery magic.
They left the boy to be breathed by the forest and returned to their car.
When they hit the road Harley was humming a song in and Peter started humming along when he recognized it.
They got louder with every mile and by the end of the road they were screaming the song, laughing and crying at the same time.
Because this was their song. And it was faery boy's song And it had been her song.
Daydreaming, vol.1, part 3
Yellow, here’s a new part of Daydreaming vol.1 if anyone wants to read it. ^^ ( @ilumxna ) part 1 | part 2
You thought you had your shit together. It’s been years since you’ve felt this angry or this insecure. The emotions hit you so suddenly, they almost left you gasping for air. Common sense flew out of your head and you just had to go and see it for yourself.
The call from your mom came at 3 in the morning. You were somewhere in dreamland when the first sounds of the familiar tune broke through your slumber. Seeing Liz’s name this early in the morning wasn’t good. You loved your mother dearly, but you were almost positive that she would be the bearer of bad news.
Her voice sounded strained with a breathy undertone when she asked to have coffee with you in the morning. This didn’t surprise you too much since she moved to LA after retiring, opting to make it her permanent residence while she traveled around the world and took photos. You were so happy that she could live her dreams. You were also pleased to finally be close to her after almost three decades of being apart.
You picked up both drinks from the nearby coffee shop and set out towards the park. It was a slightly chilly morning so the park was half-empty, leaving you with plenty of seating options. She was still the same as ever, save for the grey in her hair and her nervous demeanor.
“Mom, you’re scaring me. What’s going on?” you asked as you gave her her coffee and a sideways hug. Your long limbs were able to envelop her whole without being awkward.
“Don’t worry, baby, Andy and I are fine. Is it so weird to want to see your kid these days?”
“C’mon, mom,” you huffed, “you called me at 3 AM so something must definitely be up. Now, don’t beat around the bush and just tell me.”
It was weird talking to your mom like this. It used to be her taking this no-nonsense tone with you, but things have definitely changed. She couldn’t look you in the eye at first, holding her gaze to the left, trying to find the words.
“So, you know how I just got back from this trip, yeah? We went as far as Maine with your dad. I haven’t felt so alive in a long time. Now I know why you miss touring so much.” she started, sitting sideways on the bench and taking your hand in hers.
“We were in this tiny little town in Connecticut, you should’ve seen the sunsets… Kinda reminded me of Sydney. Anyways, we decided to snap a few photos of the beach and grab a beer with your dad. There was live music, and, honestly, here comes the tricky part. The kid, the one singing… It almost felt like I was transported twenty years back in time and it was you sitting on that barstool. He looked like he might be a carbon copy of you Luke. I… I thought I might be losing my mind, but your dad agrees with me.”
You were still trying to process her words when she pulled out her phone and unlocked it, showing you a picture of a curly man, a little older than a boy, in fact, looking directly into the camera with a vacant stare in his blue eyes. “Look, baby, I know this might be a lot to take in, but I swear to you. I felt something there. I think he might be yours. There’s just no other way of explaining it. We asked around, and it turns out that he takes the stage there every week, so he’ll be around. I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but I think that you should go and make sense of this whole situation by yourself.”
It felt like time stood still as you were staring at that picture. It reminded you of looking at yourself in the mirror, except the hair color was a bit darker, the skin a bit smoother and the stare a bit more lost.
There were a lot of emotions brewing underneath your skin. There was definitely uncertainty, not knowing whether it was worth it to even pay attention to this issue, he might just turn out to be a lookalike, as bizarre as it may seem. There was a hefty amount of anger, because if what you felt deep in your heart was true, someone managed to hide a son from you for years, and you might just have an idea who. There was also sadness, that you missed so much, that you almost missed it all.
It took you a week to get over the shock and plan the trip, but once you were seated in that rental car, driving down I-95, you knew you made the right call. It was approaching sunset by the time you got there. Your mom was right, it was a beautiful one. You grabbed a seat towards the back, glad that there weren’t that many people who could recognize you. The band was just a fond memory locked up in your mind by now, but there were still a few people asking for an autograph on the street and your name still appeared in popular songs as the author. Guess you couldn’t live without music after all.
You were slightly amazed at what you heard. His voice was nothing like yours. It was a lot deeper and intimate, not entirely radio-friendly, but jam-packed with emotions. You couldn’t help yourself but rake your eyes over him. If you didn’t know by now, you were 99.9% sure that this was your son.
Almost as if waking up from a dream, he strummed the last chord on the guitar before saying “Thank you for having me here tonight. My name is Matt, for those of you who don’t know me, and I’ll be seeing you next Thursday, same place, same time. Have a good night!”
So all this time you had a baby boy called Matt. It somehow fit him perfectly. It was showtime. You slowly approached him as he was packing his guitar. “You could’ve added a bit of emotion at the end, you know that, right?”
His startled stare turned to you and you could see him sizing you up. Something clocked, but he was still unsure. “Excuse me, do I know you?”
“I don’t know, Matt, do you?” He knew something. You just knew it in your heart of hearts. He somehow knew you or maybe knew of you.
“I always thought that you were just a figment of my imagination…” That was not what you were expecting to hear. Have we met before?
“I’m sorry, it’s just I have this recurring daydream of looking at a stage and seeing you there, and the light makes it difficult to see if it was you, but I just know it is. Holy shit. It was driving me crazy.”
“I used to be in a band. Maybe you’ve seen us play live.” you point out, lifting the corners of your mouth. “Listen, this might sound weird, but do you… maybe… wanna grab a beer with me? I feel like we need to talk.”
“Sure, let me just make sure all the equipment is safely stored.”
You take a seat at an open table, hearing seagulls faintly in the distance. After a while of uncomfortable silence and curious stares, you decide to break the ice. “Is… This is hard for me to ask but, is there a chance that we could actually be related?”
“If you’re asking me if I’m your son, then there’s a high probability it might just be true. I’ve never really known my dad. All my life it’s been me and my mom.”
“Your mom?”
“Yes, Y/N.” Even though you had your doubts, hearing her name was like a punch to the solar plexus. It was common knowledge among your friends and family that she was the one that got away, and also the one who shall not be named. “Y/N…”
“Yes, you know her?” he said with a slight tilt to his head, something that he never forgot you used to do.
“You could say that… I guess I didn’t know her enough because she managed to hide something from me for 23 years.”
“Listen, maybe it would be better if you talked to her about this all. I’ll give you her address,” he said, giving you an apologetic look and grabbing a napkin and a pen from the bar. “It’s not far away from here and she’s probably at home. That’s my number if… if, you know, you want to give me a call after everything is cleared up.”
You take a careful look at him. He’s looking everywhere but at you and his cheeks are stained red. It shouldn’t be this way. He shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask his dad if he can keep in touch. With sadness and anger simmering in your blood, you pull him in a hug and whisper brokenly “You’re not getting rid of me that easy kid.”
PROLOGUE
The sun rises high into the sky, casting shadows on everything residing on the surface. Jesse gives a loud yawn before scratching his scrappy goatee and turning the page on a health textbook he was given by Angela by instruction of his residing commander. He didn’t know how the conversation had started, but during a debriefing on the latest mission in one of the meeting rooms, one of the punks on the Blackwatch team had decided to give Gabriel Reyes a run for his money and ask if he had a soulmate waiting back home. Gabe, of course, had laughed in that guy’s face. He laughed like it was the funniest thing in the entire world.
And just as he was laughing, something miraculous happened. The team was visited by none other than Overwatch’s Strike Commander, who not only served as a face for publicity stunts, but also was the head of operations. And the strike teams, hence the title.
“He better not.” Soldier: 76, better known as Jack Morrison, said as he practically kicked the meeting room door open with his boot. He looked pissed. And also had a stack of papers on him. It looked like someone forgot to get their morning coffee. “He’d have some serious explaining to do.”
There were a couple whispers across the table, a couple agents trying to understand the implications of what had just transpired. Jesse swore he saw some of his teammates starting to sweat. The band of Blackwatch agents saw Gabriel Reyes flash his most charming smile. The rascal could look good when he wanted to.
“Jackie, you’re backie. Not in blackie, though. I’m happy you’re openly talking about this, but didn’t we agree not to tell anyone? Also, hey, dinner at 8 in my room.” And then Gabe winked at Jack. Ew.
Jack sighed, crossing his arms, and not so subtly cueing to the assortment of medals pinned to the lapel of his cornflower blue coat. Subtle. He addressed Gabe. “Remember last night? Well, I’ve decided to become the possessive bastard you always wanted.” He gave an intimidating glance at everyone in the room. “How are you kids doing? I’m sure you’ve met me around. Though you probably didn’t think I’d be so involved with Gabe. Like, probably never expected in a million years that I was his soulmate. But yeah. That’s classified information, not a peep out of this room unless you want your life to being an even more visceral piece of hell.”
Someone gulped in anxiety. Someone sneered in ennui. But if Blackwatch owned anything, it was a pile of troublemakers.
Now, Jesse hadn’t been part of Blackwatch too long, but it never took him that long to make friends. Genji--Jesse’s best friend and second best troublemaker in Blackwatch history--decided it was his turn to say something. (Jesse liked to think of himself as the best troublemaker, but that was an entirely different discussion).
“And how are you going to do that exactly? Your boyfriend already has us running laps across the Mediterranean.” Genji sat proudly with his feet resting on the table, and Jack gave him a look of disgust.
Jack excused the moment of insubordination, and walked right past the table and into the arms of his lover. They shared a quick kiss after a moment of lingering in each others arms, much to the dismay of everyone else in the meeting room. And if Jack was good at anything, it was playing games with new recruits.
“What’s up, marido ? What makes my darling husband so sad?” Gabe said, combing his hair through the tufts of Jack’s pale blond hair. It was thin, very much unlike his own, but he liked to try.
Jack laughed, trying to materialize every ounce of theatrics he had stored in his body for this very moment. “My sweet love, I just don’t know how I’m going to live if you don’t assign your soldiers 50 more pushups each every morning before breakfast. They’re not super soldiers like us, but we must make sure they are raised right. They’re like our kids, to me.” Jack lifted a leg off the floor, like he was swooning for real.
Groaning broke out around the table, and Jesse wasn’t sure if his teammates were groaning at the obviously satirical display of affection, or at the thought of actually being assigned even more pushups every morning.
It was Gabe’s turn to laugh. “Aw, Jack. We’re going to have a conversation later on why you’re so touchy today. Let me kiss you goodbye, though.” He planted another kiss on his husband’s nose before resuming business as per usual. Jack begrudgingly peeled himself off of his husband, but not without greeting their personal pet project. He smacked the stack of autopsies in front of Jesse and gave him a wink, before ruffling through the kid’s hair.
Gabe cleared his throat, as the door shut. Radio silence. He looked at Genji, who was making paper triangle footballs to send flying across the room. Genji looked up at him and discarded the paper football into the recycling bin. Gabe swore, some of the people on this team had the attention span of gnats.
“Ok, amigxs. Before we get into the details of the upcoming mission abroad, Jack was serious about our relationship being confidential. Think of the absolute horror you would cause if the UN caught winding that I’m fucking their Strick Commander. Like, maybe it’s funny. Actually, that’s pretty fucking funny. Can I get a laugh track going here?”
Jesse was the first to start hooting and hollering. A round of applause followed. If Gabe getting laid meant a happy Gabe, who cared, really? Sure, it could cause an international scandal, but Jesse liked to take it a day at a time.
“Thanks, caballero. Ok. It might be the funniest thing ever, but let’s be serious. I don’t want to fire any of you, but if wind caught that I’m soulmates with Jack, that would probably raise some suspicions of nepotism. Now we all know that I’m a very accomplished man, with a great piece of ass too, but it could potentially mean getting the pink slip from the higher higher ups. And all of you would probably also be out of the job, since Blackwatch technically does not exist. Really. So please don’t, if you value your paycheck.
“Alright, anyways. Any questions before we begin reviewing these autopsy reports like a pack of lawyers from a video game?” Gabe asked.
Jesse McCree had a question.
He partially raised his hand like a kid in a classroom, but then put it back down as he was contemplating if he should ask it at all, but then fully raised his hand as he thought ‘fuck it’.
“Hey, son. What’s bothering you? No, I don’t have any Nature Grain bars to feed you right now, please wait until after the meeting,” Gabe said. That aroused another short round of laughter from the people at the meeting.
Jesse chuckled too, because he had actually asked for a Nature Grain before in the middle of a mission. But he had a question to ask, and that was very important. “Hey, so, uhhhhh. I don’t know if this is relevant, or important enough, but what in tarnation’s a soulmate again?”
And Jesse kind of knew too, but only vaguely, like the word ‘esoteric’.
Of course, ‘esoteric’ is a word that is used to describe when something is only understood by a small set of people. Like you could call string theory ‘esoteric’, because who the fuck knows what string theory is? But it comes around often enough that people have heard of string theory, if only by name. You could even consider the word ‘esoteric’ esoteric. That was kind of funny. But Jesse was raised in the pit of the South with a single mother, before he found himself living a life of crime. He reconsidered how esoteric the word ‘soulmates’ was.
Like ‘esoteric’, ‘soulmates’ was not a word that came up when Jesse was robbing trains for a living, nor running from the police after a shooting with an opposing gang, nor in the middle of jewelry heists in the heart of Santa Fe. ‘Soulmates’ wasn’t necessary by any means of the word, that word, necessary. But maybe while he had only heard it a handful of times, with no definition to attach to the word, maybe everyone else had.
He felt like he was the odd duck out, and that was hard to do in a group of mother fucking misfits. Like, come on, Genji was basically a fucking cyborg. Gabe had gone through that freak of a soldier enhancement program that probably fucked with his biology in ways Jesse would never understand. Moira, their resident evil scientist, shot floating orbs out of her hands in the middle of combat. What the fuck was that about? Did she hone the essence of Orbeez for the inspiration behind her primary weapon? Jesse had some real mother fucking questions.
And a lot of the times, he asked them too.
But out of all of the unprofessional and obscure questions he had asked in his life, and even just in his short stay at Blackwatch where he could ask some pretty weird things, he had never asked a question that just about floored so many different people all at once. It’s like, he asked the question about soulmates, and the question took the cake. It took the cake and ran away with the spoon and like, eloped with the dish. And fucked the moon. Jesse didn’t think there was a reason for everyone to look so scandalized, though.
Because questions didn’t take cakes, or run with spoons, or elope, or fuck.
Gabe had a face that betrayed emotions Jesse knew Gabe didn’t show often: remorse. Of course, ‘remorse’ kind of sounded like ‘Morrison’ and that was funny for 2 seconds. But it was downright scary. Jesse was the type of person that was always starting something.
2 days ago, he had snuck into the mess hall at 3:30AM to steal a bag of doritos. Last week, he got captured on a mission and had to be rescued from an abandoned warehouse. Yesterday, he accidentally passed a stink bomb so bad, Gabe started coughing and moved their weekly recap meeting outside. And it was raining, too.
“Kid, did you ever take a health class before dropping out of school?” Gabe asked.
Jesse didn’t know how to answer that. “Well, I know how my body works, thank you. Uh, but t’answer your question…. No. What’s that got t’do with soulmates?”
Gabe scrunched his lips, wondering how he could quickly remedy the situation. This is why they paid him the big bucks. Not the biggest bucks, but more than large enough bucks. “Ok, everyone settle down for a hot second. Jesse, I’m going to comm Angela for a textbook you can read. And you probably need some one-on-one lessons on other stuff--yeah, I know you know what sex is but what about STIs? That’s half the battle. How about taking a break this week and just getting through health class?”
“But boss--”
“Trust me, this is way more important.”
Gabe took out one of his comms, one that only a limited amount of people on base had access too. It was mostly used for emergencies, but other times, was used as a quick way to contact anyone on base.
“Hey Angela! How are you? It’s Gabriel Reyes. I’m great and so is Jack-o’-Lantern thanks for asking. Do you have a this week to give some health lessons to one of our agents? I know you’re friends with our little Jesse. Great. Yeah? Perfect, please put that textbook on reserve. I’ll send Jesse down soon. Ok. Awesome. Over.” Gabe clipped the comm back into his belt. “Ok, anyone else skip health class?”
The room, for once, was a resounding silence. Moira raised her hand.
“You didn’t take health class, O’deorain? Aren’t you a doctor?” Gabe asked.
“Very funny, commander. I was wondering why you did not just ask me to prepare some lessons and generic information for Jesse, and instead contacted Angela Zeigler.” She brought a hand up to her face, and rested her cheek on her long purple nails that looked like talons.
“Hey, doc. You’re coming with us on this mission. You can help out later if Jesse wants.” Gabe sighs and turns to Jesse. “Alright, cowboy. Sorry to do this to you, and don’t let this go to your head, but I can’t just let you go gallivanting into a foreign country with no knowledge about your own body parts. Trust me. Soulmates isn’t something to mess around with. I know you’re stressed about it. Consider yourself on hourly while you lax away while hitting the books this week, ok?”
Jesse sighed and pulled his cowboy hat off of his head. He was disappointed he wouldn’t be going to Japan, but there would definitely be more opportunities for travel in the future. Filling the cracks in his education wasn’t something that he would have completely expected out of Blackwatch.
In fact, he was still reeling over getting fed 3 square meals a day. Being treated with any semblance or respect. Being valued not because he was probably the greatest sharpshooter of his generation, but for his personality and interests. Though playing old Hollywood flicks on movie night annoyed his teammates to no end, people stuck around and watched with him. And that was more valuable than ransacking a jewelry store.
“You can stick around, but I suggest getting around early since the textbook Angela has for you is several hundreds of pages long.” Gabe grinned, trying to whisk away Jesse’s problems.
Jesse replaced the hat on his head, and yawned as he stretched his arms above his head. “See y’all later, suckeroonies. Y’all hear that? I’m being paid to stay on base this week!”
More laughter from the gallery. Jesse got a few pats on the back. Genji flicked a paper football in his direction, and it smacked Jesse straight in the forehead.
“Text me” Genji said with a salute. Gabriel cleared his throat and held out his hand.
Genji sighed as he was caught red handed, and surrendered his stash of paper footballs. A beat passed, and Gabriel remained focused on Genji. Genji took the paper footballs out of the pockets of his sweatpants and handed those over too.
That Genji.
Jesse snuck out the door as the team started talking about the autopsy reports, and was off to find Angela.
And not to say he wasn’t disappointed at not being able to travel with the rest of the team this time, but he tried to stick to the silver lining: gorging on breadsticks. Sometimes they were stale, but hit those babies with an unearthly and disgusting amount of ranch dressing, and Jesse would eat them like there was no tomorrow. Being paid also wasn’t half bad. And getting his question answered certainly wasn’t that bad.
He walked past the kitchen, one of the larger living rooms, and some of the barracks before taking an elevator up a few floors to the right area. Why wasn’t the med bay in the middle of the building?
Angela “Mercy” Zeigler was one of Overwatch’s doctors. She was at the top of her field at a young age, and a dear friend of Jesse’s. While the two could not have come from more different worlds, they bonded over some obscure things like miniature scented soaps. Besides, Jesse got injured so much on missions, they practically had to become friends. Angela was huge on doctor patient confidentiality, but that didn’t stop her from chewing Jesse out every single time he came back needing a cast.
If taking health classes was urgent enough for Gabe to kick him off of the latest mission, it had to be some level of important. How important could the whole soulmates thing be ? The elevator dinged and he followed the path he knew by heart to Angela’s office. He knocked on her door.
“Come in!” someone called from the other side.
He stepped inside. The examination room was just like he remembered it. White walls, with neat stacks of papers and books sitting in the corners by a computer desk. He was always impressed by how Angela worked, nothing seemed to get by her despite the clear lack of organization she subjected her belongings to. “Angie! Reckon you have a moment to spare for an old cowboy?”
She looked up from the paper she was reading and instinctively scanned the length of his body. “What appears to be the problem, Jesse? Ah. You’re here so early. Health lessons?”
“Correcto-mundo.”
She stifled a laugh and motioned to the examination table. “Feel free to take a seat, I’ll set up one of the projects. I have time to give you a quick lesson today, but otherwise believe you are just going to have to read a textbook and call me with any pertinent questions. We should also have a quick quiz at the end of the week just to see if you have retained any information. Where would you like to start?”
Jesse started swinging his legs back and forth, and took his hat off to get comfortable. This would be the closest he’d ever gotten to college. “What the hell’s a soulmate, Angela?”
“Ah, yes. That is a fun topic. Let us begin.”
And that is how Jesse finds himself reading through what has got to be the densest book he’s ever laid his pretty brown eyes on. Reading this thing is like trying to breath in a chunky soup. There’s just too much going on for it to be possible, but some find a way to make it happen. Not many, but some. The sun, now past noon, has travelled lower into the sky during the course of the afternoon. He sits on a cliff by the Overwatch base in Gibraltar, after thoroughly being lectured this morning by Dr. Zeigler.
Jesse rolls over, book in hand, and takes a moment to look over the cliff he’s been sitting at the whole time. The sea beneath him crashes into the crook of the precipice, leaving sparkling moisture behind to glitter in the sun. Who needed to go to Japan for a mission anyways? He sighed.
He glanced back down at his textbook. Jesse swears he’s never read so much in his life.
The connection between soulmates has not yet been properly explained by the lengths of modern medicine .
Great. Just what Angela said.
However, there is one documented process that occurs between a pair of soulmates. When an individual instigates skin-to-skin contact with their soulmate for the first time, their touch will leave a mark in the shape of the touch. For example, if a person accidentally bumps into their soulmate and the two touch shoulders, the initiator of the touch (IOT for short) will leave a shoulder shaped imprint on the receiver of the touch (ROT for short). Though the receiver may not see the mark form on their skin automatically, they will automatically feel a connection to their soulmate. However, the IOT will not feel anything short of some shoulder discomfort during this exchange.
Individuals in Markwell’s case study report that a forming soulmate connection feels like being “stuck in a movie montage” (Markwell 40). The ROT will automatically reel through a selection of events from the IOT’s life, and thus, gaining a better understanding of their fated person .
Hm.
When someone first receives their soulmate marking, Markwell reports, “it is common to freeze up as the memories are being transferred from person to person” (Markwell 41). In order to seal the bond and make it permanent, the ROT must then instigate skin-to-skin contact with the original IOT. Otherwise, any received soulmate marks will slowly fade over time, though never completely disappear.
Soulmates do not have to be romantic couples. Some opt for friendship, or other types of relationships. However, the majority of soulmates do end up spending the rest of their lives together in some form, due to the depth of their unique connection.
It is possible for soulmates to never meet, because before initial skin-to-skin contact, there are currently no medical tools available that accurately predict the existence of a soulmate connection between two people. The next section is a photo gallery of soulmate marks .
Ok.
Some of these were pretty funny. There’s an image of someone with a neon purple pair of lips, indicating that their first contact with their soulmate was a kiss. It was so embarrassing Jesse laughed. On another page, someone just had an imprint of a dark yellow hand on their shoulder. That looked kind of cool.
Next page.
Soulmate pairs with an incomplete set of soulmate marks are another story. Individuals that have received a soulmate marking, but whom are unable to reciprocate the marking on their respective soulmate, have a greater chance of developing anxiety or depression. Individuals studied have repeatedly reported feeling listless. This has not yet been thoroughly studied. Psychiatrists predict that this is due to a mixture of reasons.
Scary.
Jesse hoped that this would never happen to him. He hoped to god, the gods, the sky, the flowing rivers and the tall mountains. He hoped this would never happen. But fate had other plans for young Jesse McCree.
“And cut!” Dexter shouts and interrupts the silence between the two men in front of the cameras. Both men just ended the scene, a beautiful performance and two people falling in love. “Well done guys. We’re gonna wrap it up for today.” Dex turns away and speaks to one of the cameramen.
Taron grins at his best friend sitting beside him on the wooden stairs. He takes off his glasses and puts them in the pocket of the patch covered jean jacket, standing. Richard stands and stretches, letting out a sigh of relief. It has been a long day on set and they are exhausted. Dexter comes up to the two and lays his arms around them. “You two were brilliant today! I’ll see you here again tomorrow at 6pm.” And with that, they headed off.
Richard opens the buttons of his dark suit and looks at Taron, who is checking his phone. They make their way to their trailers, laughing and talking about their recent shoot. Taron slowly stops in front of his trailer and turns to his friend. “Rich, you wanna come over today? The kids would love to see you again.”
Richard smiles softly and agrees. Taron’s wife has been traveling for work and their children stayed with his mother whenever he was on set. Since she was away often, they spent most days chilling on the sofa after a long day on set. Taron did get quite lonely in the evenings when he had no one to talk to. Richard sensed it and visited when his best mate needed it.
Not long after, Taron finds himself driving to his mother’s house. His vision blurs slightly as he zones out, quickly pulling himself back with a sigh. He was exhausted and his throat was sore from singing “Tiny Dancer” live on set repeatedly for the last 2 hours. He gets out of the car and stretches, hearing his back crack and pain slowly creep in. As he pressed the doorbell, he could hear the pattern of his daughter’s footsteps. A sudden sharp pain shoots to his neck, him letting out a painful moan. His body is breaking down.
He puts on a smile when the doors opens and his beautiful young daughter is standing in front of him. “Hello cutie. You alright?” He asks laughing as she hugs him tight. Angelina nods and looks up at him. He stares into her big dark brown eyes, identical to her mother’s but framed with his babygirl’s face. Her brown hair is tied into a ponytail and she’s in a light blue dress. Taron’s heart just melts looking at her.
The seven year old takes his hand and pulls him into the house. His mother greets him with a warm hug and watches him carefully. “Hey mum. I hope these two weren’t too nerve wrecking.” He says smiling gratefully at her. Taron was glad that there was someone he trusted to watch his children.
“Don’t worry about us, son. Hard day at work?” She asks, concern hinted in her words. He just nods and tries to hide his exhaustion. The last week has been filled with day and night shoots, leaving him with little to no sleep.
They walk into the living room where his three year old son is playing with his toys. Taron crouches down and and regrets it’s immediately. Pain pulsing through his entire body, urging him to stand up. “Hey buddy. How are you?” He asks the toddler and forces a smile.
Benjamin’s green eyes light up at the sound of his father’s voice and he smiles wildly. “Daddy!” His little boy jumps up and stumbles over to him. Taron pulls him into a hug and gives him a gentle kiss on his head. Angie rests her head on T’s back and wraps her arms around him. He could have stayed there forever, just holding his two children. Nausea begins to set in and he takes deep breaths, calming himself down.
“Let’s get you two home.” He speaks and picks up his youngest child. Angie takes his hand into her tiny one and follows him outside and to the car. He buckles up his toddler in his car seat and Angie settles into the passenger seat. His mother stands in the doorway, watching him with a soft smile. Through her eyes, she could see how her son fought against his exhaustion and hid his pain after a long week of working. Not in front of the children, he tells himself. They shouldn’t see how he truly felt. He wouldn’t let them.
Taron walks to the doorway, a worried expression settled on his face. He doesn’t want to overuse her offer to watch Angelina and Benjamin, but he didn’t have a lot of options. “Mum, is there a chance you could come over tomorrow night and stay with Ben and Angie? We have-“ She cuts him off by pulling him into a tight hug.
“Of course I’ll be there. And you should get some sleep Taron. You may be able to hide from the kids, but a mother knows her children.” She looks up at him with worried eyes but a small smile. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and chuckles when Taron lets out a relieved sigh.
“You’re the best mom. I love you. Goodnight.” He walks back to his car and gets in, driving off into the night.
“Are you gonna be home tomorrow Daddy?” Angelina looks up at her father with pleading eyes. She understood that her father’s job took most of his time, spanning from days to weeks at a time. Taron holds in a sigh, not wanting to break his baby’s heart.
“I’m gonna be home most of the day tomorrow, and then granny is coming over in the evening. Sounds good?” He glances over at her and she nods happily. A day with her father was all she yearned for. Taron relaxes and smiles, the joy in her eyes filling his heart.
Angie hears Ben calling out and turns the radio down. “Daddy, can you please sing for me?” His soft voice perking his father’s ears. Taron focuses on the road, thinking of something to sing that won’t damage his vocal cords completely. He settles on “Tiny Dancer”, his son’s favorite, and starts the first lines. Take 35, he thinks to himself. Taron starts swaying gently, singing with his heart and puts on as best a show as he could for his precious human beings that meant the world to him.
The kids were already in their pajamas when the doorbell rang. Taron changed into a t-shirt and comfy sweatpants. He opens the door and laughs when he sees his favorite Scottish man. Richard wears a hoodie and sweatpants as well, his hair a natural mess after being freed from the wig. “What are you laughing at mate?” Rich ponders with irritation in his voice, stepping into his friend’s home.
“Oh nothing. I just thought you’d be dressed properly.” Taron teases him and closes the door.
Richard stares at him, irritation shining in his bright blue eyes. “It’s 10pm and I’m at your house. Get off my ass!” He shakes his head and sits his keys on the little commode. “And just to let you know, you look ravishing yourself.” He snickers cheekily and smiles.
Taron just laughs and leads his mate into the living room. “Angelina! Benjamin! Uncle Rich is here!” Taron shouts and his children quickly run down the stairs with excited faces. They jump into their uncle’s arms and Rich smiles, tickling them. They adored the Scottish man. Taron watches with a wide smile on his face. But he had to break up this welcome session, realizing their bedtime was now. “Alright kids, time for bed. Say goodnight to Uncle Rich.”
They both give him hugs and kisses and rush back upstairs. He follows behind them, going into Benjamin’s room first. The small child climbs into bed after struggling slightly and lays down under the covers, looking up at his father. Taron tucks him in and smiles, kissing his son on his cheek. “Goodnight Ben.” He smiles and yawns, his eyes closing fast.
He wanders into his daughter’s room, who’s already tucked in and waiting for him. He comes over to her side and pushes the hair out of her face. “Goodnight Angie.” He kisses her forehead and turns out her light, walking out and shutting the door gently behind him.
Taron plopped down on the sofa and let out a sigh. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His stomach was still hurting and he prays he doesn’t get sick. Richard chuckles and stands up, going into the kitchen and getting them drinks. As he comes back, Taron opens his eyes and laughs, an apologetic look in his eyes. “I’m sorry mate, I forgot to get ya something.”
“It’s alright mate. I mean, I already know where everything is.” Richard assures smiling and sits next to his friend. He has visited Taron quite often, enough to know his house like his own. He gives Taron a glass of water and relaxes into the pillows behind him. “You wanna watch a movie?”
Taron agrees but even doesn’t pay attention to what Richard puts on. He sits there, staring at the TV screen without following the storyline at all. His eyes are burning and his whole body starts to shut down. The last thing he remembers is tilting over slightly and resting his head on Richard’s shoulder. Rich lets him rest his head on his chest and puts an arm around him. It wasn’t the first time one of them gave up on the movie and fell asleep in the other’s arms.
Richard carefully changes position, cautious not to wake up his best friend. He puts a blanket over the sleeping man, leaning on him like a child. The Scott tries to position Taron’s head into a more comfortable spot, noticing Taron was in a lot of pain recently. Richard rests his head against the sofa behind him and closes his eyes. He breathes slowly, drifting off into a deep sleep.
He wakes up when Taron sits up and begins coughing roughly, moaning. Richard reaches over for the lamp on the small table beside him and turns it on. “Mate, you alright?” He asks and watches him suspiciously.
Taron shakes his head slightly, which meant a lot because he never showed other how he really felt. But he wouldn’t be able to hide it much longer. His eyes filled with tears as he continued to cough. He was pale and shivering, a fever settling into his body.
“I think you have a fever T. You need to get into bed.” Rich speaks concerned and certain. Taron just nods weakly and coughs again. Richard stands and makes his way to the kitchen. He turns on the boiler and searches the cabinets. “Taron where’s the tea?” He inquires, raising his voice a little and searching another cabinet.
“In the cabinet over the boiler.” Taron responds with a raspy voice. It’s evident he isn’t doing well. He wraps his blanket around his body and slowly walks to the kitchen island where he sits down with a grunt. Rich finally finds it and puts honey into a cup along with the tea packet and boiling water. He hands the cup to his mate, looking concerned. “Thanks mate.”
Richard looks down at his watch and sighs. It’s 5am already. He goes into the downstairs bathroom and gets the thermometer, coming back to Taron, who already guzzled down his tea. He plops the thermometer into his friend’s mouth and waited for the dreaded beep. It ripped through the silence of the house a minute later, making Taron flinch. Rich took it and turned off the sound and looked at the numbers. “Well you’re definitely running a fever mate. 104.”
Taron groans and rest his head on the table. “Shit Richard! I can’t get sick now. Not at a time like this.” He grumbles and coughs. His body aches and his head is pounding. How was he gonna be able to shoot tomorrow night like this?
Rich pats him on the back and helps Taron up, closing the blanket closer around his friend. “We’re gonna get you into bed and then we’ll see how you feel tomorrow.” Taron just nods and lets Rich lead him to the bedroom carefully. He falls into bed as Richard opened windows to let in fresh air. T sets an alarm for 7:30am on his phone, reminding him to get up and take Angelina to school.
Richard watches as his eyes close and he falls into a deep sleep. He grabs his friend’s phone and turns the alarm off. Taron needed his rest and Rich didn’t mind taking Angelina to school in a couple hours. He leaves the room, gently closing the door. He made his way to the kids’ rooms and smiled to see them still deep in their slumber. As they were walking upstairs, Taron, being the clumsy man he is sometimes, ran right into a table, causing the two to stifle their laughter. He chuckles quietly and heads downstairs, getting comfortable on the couch and setting his own alarm to 7:30am.
The alarm blared out hours later and Richard jumped up and groaned. Turning off the noise, he stands and stretches and goes upstairs to wake the kids. As they woke, they were surprised to see their uncle and not their father, but they got ready for the day nonetheless. He helps Benjamin get dressed and carries him and his sister in his arms down the stairs. Angie cuddles into his shoulder and closes her eyes, slipping back into a light sleep. Richard dreaded putting her down, but she had to wake up and eat.
"Have a good day Angie!"
“Bye Uncle Richard!” The two exchanged goodbyes as she walks away waving to her uncle. She seems so small compared to the other children. It was a challenge tying up her thick brown hair this morning but Rich managed. He glances in the backseat at the toddler in his car seat, who’s just dancing to the music on the radio. Richard smiles to himself and drives off, unable to understand how Taron created a mini version of himself.
Richard drove to his own apartment and carried Benjamin inside with him. He sits Ben on the bed with some toys so he can play, and then begins to change and pack clothes in a bag. After finishing up, he looks over at Ben and holds his hand out. “You coming lad?” He says and smiles. Ben reaches out to him and Rich picks him up, carrying him out to the car. They get back to Taron’s at 9am. Richard puts his bag in the living room and sits Benjamin on the floor and walks upstairs to Taron’s room.
As he walks in, he sees his best friend still asleep. Coming closer, he notices Taron’s face covered in sweat, his hair sticking to his face. He gently places his hand on T’s face. His fever still alive and burning. Richard goes and gets a wash cloth soaking it in cold water. He comes back and wipes his face carefully, setting it on his forehead afterwards. His friend was deep in his sleep, staying still during Rich’s actions.
Benjamin and Richard were on the carpet downstairs playing with his toys when they heard pounding on the stairs. Taron is rushing down the stairs with his phone in hand. He looks at Richard with apologetic eyes, his heart racing. “Shit Richard I’m so sorry. I must’ve missed the alarm.” Richard laughs and stands, looking at his friend.
“Taron calm down. I turned it off as soon as you went to sleep. You needed more than 3 hours of sleep. Angie is in school and Ben has been chilling with me.” Richard says in confidence to his best friend.
Taron sighs in relief and smiles. “Thanks mate. I really appreciate you. I was losing my mind.” He sits on the sofa and Benjamin climbs on to his lap, cuddling him. Taron holds him and smiles, but frowns soon after. “But I can’t do the scene tonight. I still feel like shit.” He speaks and looks at Richard.
“Don’t worry about it. I talked to Dex this morning. He’s giving us the week off so you can get better.” Rich sits next to his best friend and pulls Ben onto his lap, not wanting him to sit on his sick father. Taron silently agreeing.
“You’re the best Dickie!” Taron smiles wide looking at him.
"What are friends for?"
Thoughts on Lover
Tumblr media
@taylorswift you killed it. To be perfectly honest, starting with Red it's been a learn to love (I don't do well with change and I lovelovelove them all now!), but with this album I immediately lovered it!
It was really hard to rank the songs on this album because they are all so good! But here's my take.
#18 False God
This is the only song that I had a "meh" reaction to. It's slowly growing on me, but if one song had to be cut, it would be this one.
Favorite lyrics: "I know heaven's a thing / I go there when you touch me, honey / Hell is when I fight with you"
#17 Cruel Summer
I like this song, but I just don't get this song. I like the sound and, I love love love the bridge, but I just don't understand it. (I also thought the lyrics were "he looks so pretty like the devil" instead of "he looks up grinning like a devil")
Favorite lyrics: "I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you" and "'And I scream, "For whatever it's worth / I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?"'
#16 You Need to Calm Down
Very fun song and I like it a lot, who would have thought this would be one of the weaker songs on the album? This song is a triple, most of the rest of the songs are completely out of the park home runs! Great message, I think everyone one needs to calm down (ironically especially the left).
Favorite lyrics: "Say it in the street, that's a knock-out / But you say it in a tweet, that's a cop-out" and "Shade never made anyone less gay".
#15 ME!
Fun light song. Every time I hear the song I do the UH hand to the forehead from the music video. The music video was so great and the cat surprise!!! ME! was her first opening single I've immediately loved since Mine. (While I've grown to appreciate WANEGBT, I thought it was a joke when I first heard it when she played it on her live stream party. I thought she'd be like "JK here's the real single". Again, don't do well with change). I didn't mind the hey kids part, and was actually disappointed it was removed from the album version.
Favorite lyrics: "I'm the only one of me / Let me keep you company-e-e-eh / Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh / You're the only one of you / Baby, that's the fun of you"
#14 London Boy
Fun song! Cool learning more about London, makes me want to go back! I thought it was clever.
Favorite lyrics: "He likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet / Darling, I fancy you" and "So I guess all the rumors are true / You know I love a London boy / Boy, I fancy you"
#13 Miss Americana
Love the sound of this song. The metaphor is also interesting (easy to relate to on either team. As someone whose team has always been loosing where I live this is very, very relatable). The song can be enjoyed regardless of the political metaphor.
Favorite lyrics: "American stories burning before me / I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed / Boys will be boys then, where are the wise men? / Darling, I'm scared"
#12 It's Nice to Have a Friend
Cute sweet song, I love it! Great classic Taylor Swift story telling song writing. I like the continued theme of snow.
Favorite lyrics: "Church bells ring, carry me home / Rice on the ground looks like snow / Call my bluff, call you "Babe" / Have my back, yeah, every day / Feels like home, stay in bed / The whole weekend"
#11 I Forgot That You Existed
I love this song! It is upbeat and sends a good message. "It isn't love it isn't hate it's just indifference" hits the nail on the head when it comes to truly being over something. I really need to work on the whole "I forgot that you existed" thing as I tend to hold on to grudges and let them consume me. Can't wait for the peaceful and quiet.
Favorite lyrics: "Your name on my lips, tongue-tied / Free rent, living in my mind"
#10 Afterglow
I think I would like this song more if it was earlier on the album. By the time I get here, I'm so overwhelmed with good songs it is difficult to fully appreciate. It is the perfect song to go after ME! though. There are so many good lyrics in this song. The chorus and verses are so relatable.
Favorite lyrics: "I lived like an island, punished you with silence / Went off like sirens, just crying / Why'd I have to break what I love so much? / It's on your face, don't walk away, I need to say" and "I'm the one who burned us down / But it's not what I meant / Sorry that I hurt you / I don't wanna do, I don't wanna do this to you / I don't wanna lose, I don't wanna lose this with you"
#9 The Man
I honestly was expecting not to like this song. I was worried it would be ungrateful and just eye roll. But it was the opposite - the sound and the lyrics! Taylor is in a unique position where being a woman has helped her most of her career (no one would have played a male teenager writing songs like that on country radio). However, she certainly has been held to different standards as a woman. I like how the chorus is relatable to anyone and the verses are uniquely personal to Taylor. Taylor would be THE man.
Favorite lyrics: "I'm so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man / And I'm so sick of them coming at me again / 'Cause if I was a man, then I'd be the man"
#8 Soon You'll Get Better
Wow. This song. I sobbed the first few times I heard it. (I still have to skip over it at work). We had to take a listening break after this one. The story telling and the small details.... Taylor, thank you for sharing such a personal song. I hope your mother gets better soon.
Favorite lyrics: "Holy orange bottles, each night, I pray to you / Desperate people find faith, so now I pray to Jesus too" and "And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do / If there's no you?"
#7 Daylight
Such a perfect ending to a perfect album. What a great message. I really need to step into the daylight and let it go. I love this song so much, there are so many hidden gem lyrics in this one. Hard to pick favorites. Love being burning red to golden, great call back, even better lesson.
Favorite lyrics: "I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you / I don't wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you" and "I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked / Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke" and "I once believed love would be (Burning red) / But it's golden / Like daylight"
#6 Paper Rings
I love this song so much! Great story telling, perfect details, and a great message. I immediately lovered it and it originally was in my top 3. Since then it's gone down a little I think because my love of slow songs is catching up to me, it is so SO hard to rank these top 6. This song is upbeat and happy. I just want to dance around. Especially that pre-chorus. Makes me want to marry my boyfriend with paper rings!
Favorite lyrics: "Went home and tried to stalk you on the internet / Now I've read all of the books beside your bed" (too cute, funny how things change!) and "I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings / Uh huh, that's right, you're the one I want".
#5 Lover
I simply LOVER this song! This song is everything I love about Taylor Swift. The story telling, the simplified arrangement of the song - I am so glad she went back to her roots on this song. A week or two after the album was released I went out to happy hour with some coworkers and this song was playing and my boyfriend walked in and I melted. Huge bonus that the music video is just perfect.
Favorite lyrics: "Can I go where you go? / Can we always be this close forever and ever?" and "My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue / All's well that ends well to end up with you"
#4 I Think He Knows
THIS SONG!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! Not a song I would usually expect to love this much but I do. Skipping around with this song in my head. Also, my boyfriend totally knows! I love the throw back to sparks fly and how she's driving.
Side note - When I sing this song I change attitude to cattitude. It's like gorgeous how I sing this song to my cats. I really want to make a parody version song about an animal shelter with cats.
Favorite lyrics: "I am an architect, I'm drawing up the plans / It's like I'm 17, nobody understands / No one understands" and "He got my heartbeat / Skipping down 16th Avenue / Got that, oh, I mean / Wanna see what's under that attitude like / I want you, bless my soul / And I ain't gotta tell him, I think he knows" and "Lyrical smile, indigo eyes, hand on my thigh / We can follow the sparks, I'll drive"
#3 Death By A Thousand Cuts
This song. Taylor proves that she can still write sad songs even when she's happy. Even though I'm happy, I still love sad songs. I cried the first time I heard this song, I don't think I could handle this song if my boyfriend and I ever broke up. There are so many great lyrics and details in this song. The traffic lights lyric is so desperate and tragic. I love this song so much. (This song goes back and forth between #2 and #3).
Favorite lyrics: "And what once was ours is no one's now / I see you everywhere, the only thing we share / Is this small town / You said it was a great love, one for the ages / But if the story's over, why am I still writing pages?" and "I look through the windows of this love / Even though we boarded them up / Chandelier's still flickering here / 'Cause I can't pretend it's okay when it's not" and "Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand / Paper cut stings from our paper-thin plans" and "I take the long way home / I ask the traffic lights if it'll be alright / They say, "I don't know"".
#2 Cornelia Street
This song is both heartbreaking and happy. I love it! The song writing on this is absolute perfection. Not going to lie, this one also made me cry the first time I heard it. The emotion behind this song is so raw and real - "kind of heartbreak time could never mend" just kills me. Continuation of her doubts from the archer and a peak through the years of this relationship. There's a happy ending but at the same time still worry. I need a stripped down version of this song. This song goes back and forth between #2 and #3.
Favorite lyrics: "We were a fresh page on the desk / Filling in the blanks as we go / As if the street lights pointed in an arrow head / Leading us home" and "And I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends / I'd never walk Cornelia Street again / That's the kinda heartbreak time could never mend" and "Years ago, we were just inside / Barefoot in the kitchen / Sacred new beginnings / That became my religion, listen".
Tumblr media
#1 The Archer
The emotion behind this song is so raw and real. Taylor is letting us in to her deepest darkest self doubt. I love every single thing about this song. Every lyric just cuts right to the heart. I turn this song up every time so I can hear every detail masterfully woven into the song. The way she pleads "help me hold onto you" kills me. But what I love most about this song is that it ends on a positive note "you could stay" and she's ready to fight for this relationship. This song is my #2 or #3 favorite Taylor Swift song with All Too Well at #1 and I go back and forth on Clean being #2 or #3.
Favorite lyrics: all of them, but especially "I wake in the night / I pace like a ghost / The room is on fire / Invisible smoke / And all of my heroes / Die all alone / Help me hold on to you" and "I've been the archer / I've been the prey / Screaming, "Who could ever leave me darling... / But who could stay?""
Over all. I'd say a 13/10. I cannot wait for Loverfest West. And also, when does album #8 come out? Seriously though Taylor, thank you for these past 13 years. Your music has been there for me throw the end of middle school, high school, college, and now the real world. I cannot wait to see what is next for you.
Deviated Paths: Jericho part 3
I apologize for this chapter taking so long, it was a surprisingly difficult one for me to write and I had some irl stuff going on this week. I also have the outlines for the rest of the story and unless anything changes it should be 5 chapters. Anyway, here's the chapter, hope you guys like it!
Also, Hank gets his one alotted fuck.
previous: 1 2
The past two weeks had been hard for Connor. He spent most days inside trying to process what happened to him while Hank went to work. Things seemed to be moving on in the world, and going back to an uneasy ‘normal.’ News had slowly stopped covering the Jericho raid when they learned that there wasn’t much to report on. Not much happened, and what information that could be learned was wrapped up in so much red tape that it made their heads spin.
It seemed like Connor’s warning had been helpful. Most of the androids had escaped, Hank told him a few days after the incident. Connor was conflicted about this. He was glad that he could help those who were just trying to survive, but it made him uneasy that Markus was still out there. He knew logically that Markus needed to survive through this, but his emotions dealing with the deviant leader were muddy at best.
Connor didn’t lie to Hank when he said that he understood the basic motives behind Markus’s actions, but it was different looking at it from an outsider’s perspective and living through it.
Connor was watching the news when Hank came in the house. There were heavy footsteps shuffling through the front entry to the living room where Connor was sitting on the couch. Hank looked at the android, noticing that he was still wearing his beanie. Connor had worn it since the first time he woke up on Hank’s couch as a comfort item of sorts. It made it easier to process everything if he wasn’t constantly reminded of his LED. Connor was sure it would be cycling red these days if it was still there.
Hank seemed distressed. Connor wanted to scan him to check, but he picked up that it made Hank uncomfortable when he was scanned randomly. Instead, Connor took the more ‘human’ approach. “How was your day?” Connor asked Hank, as the man sat down on the couch next to Connor. Connor pulled his knees up to his chest and sat his head on top of them.
“Same shit, different day,” Hank sighed. He flipped the tv from the news to a rerun of the previous night’s basketball game. He then turned down the volume and turned to Connor. “The FBI’s on our asses right now about the deviant ‘problem.’ They know just as much as we know right now, and it makes them frustrated.” Connor thought for a moment.
“Hank, why are you still working on the deviant case? You have me here, and I’m deviant, so isn’t it against your best interest to be on the case? You could get in a lot of trouble for housing me from the police.” Hank frowned. “Oh Con, I don’t really want to work the case. It’s just the best way to stay in the loop on developing information though, and I can keep you safer this way,” Hank put his warm hand on Connor’s shoulder, “yeah, I’m a bit worried about them finding out about you being here, but so far nobody’s spotted you and Cyberlife hasn’t contacted the police about your disappearance either. Speaking of Cyberlife, have they tried to contact you at all?”
Connor shook his head no. It confused him that Cyberlife hadn’t tried to get in touch with him for two weeks. Granted, he didn’t want them to but it was weird that they wouldn’t at least try to. Also, nobody had tried to contact him for two weeks. Nobody from Jericho came by, nor did anybody from the police station. It was radio silence. The android was concerned by this, as Cyberlife used to require him to report in every 3 hours and upload the important memories from that time period. The last time he forgot to check in, Amanda had personally visited him in his internal zen garden. That seemed like so long ago, even though it had only been about a month ago. Connor hadn’t been activated that long ago, so he supposed it was a long time ago to him.
“Well, that’s probably better that they don’t try to. I wouldn’t imagine how they would react if they found out that you were a deviant.” It wouldn’t be pretty, that’s for sure. Hank knew that they would want to ‘deactivate’ Connor and probably replace him like they had done previously. Though, this time, they wouldn’t upload his memories most likely. The Connor that he knew, the Connor that he considered a son, would cease to exist. That thought frightened Hank more than he’d like to admit.
Hank seemed to become less stressed with knowing that nobody had tried to contact Connor. Since Connor had come to live with him, Hank had found himself drinking a lot less than he used to. In the past two weeks, he had only drunk a little bit each night to try to stave off withdrawal that he knew would hit if he stopped cold turkey. Connor monitored his drinking though and made sure that he didn’t drink more than one drink a night. It was still rough, but he wanted to be there for Connor in ways that he couldn’t if he was drunk. After grabbing dinner that Connor had made for Hank (the lieutenant wasn’t sure where Connor had learned to cook, as he was pretty sure that Cyberlife hadn’t programmed him to be able to) and his one drink, he settled down on the couch again with Connor. The two men sat in comfortable silence, watching some movie from the early 2000s for the rest of the night.
---
“There is no way in hell that I’m doing that!” Hank yells at Fowler, the man sitting behind his desk with an irritated look on his face.
“You will do this Hank. The FBI is pushing this as a quick solution to the deviancy problem seeing as no other leads have been found, and they have no clue where Markus and the rest of the deviants are.” Fowler glared at the man in front of him. Hank had once been the best detective on the force, but in recent years he was but little of a shell of his previous self. He had tried to understand when Hank’s son had been taken from him, but it had gone on long enough.
“You’re talking about rounding up and killing all of the androids, regardless if they’re deviant or not.” Hank’s hands were balled into fists. He knew the FBI would do anything to track down the deviants and smooth over the public’s fears, but this was talking about the extermination of an entire group of people. It was heinous and inexcusable. They would round them all up, even his own son, and kill them. Government sanctioned murder with the help of the one and only Cyberlife.
“They aren’t people Hank, you can’t kill them. They’re just machines, and this is essentially a recall by Cyberlife. They’ll dismantle the models, figure out what the bug was, and then start production again. The FBI will leave us alone again, and then things will go back to normal once the panic calms down. Cyberlife has issued their recall, and the police will be going house to house to collect any androids that are present. Those are our orders, and you are going to follow them.”
Hank’s heart almost stopped. They’re going door-to-door? He knew that people would just hand over their androids, the panic of deviancy and threat of legal action too great to try to hide them. This also meant that he would be visited as well. Connor wasn’t safe at his house anymore, and like hell, he was going to send him into the hornet's nest of Jericho or let Cyberlife get their hands on him again. Hank had to leave with Connor, and quickly before they blocked off areas to search.
“Fuck your orders,” Hank slammed his badge down on the desk, “and tell Perkins to go shove this up his ass while you’re at it. I’m not helping you hunt them down like feral dogs. I quit.” He promptly turns and walks briskly out of the office and out of the police station. He didn’t have time to deal with their shit, he had to protect his son.
---
Hank had messaged Connor as soon as he got in his car. He didn’t explain much but told the android to start packing essentials only. When Hank pulled into the driveway and went inside, Connor was almost done. He had a go bag packed for Hank that had about a week's worth of clothes, his medication, toiletries, and wallet. He also had a bag packed with some food for Hank, a lighter, and blankets. Connor had also put the bag of dog food near the door and Sumo’s water and food dishes next to it.
“Wow, that’s amazing Connor. That was quick,” Hank marveled. It was only a ten-minute drive from the precinct to his house, but Connor had managed to pack all of this that quickly?
Connor’s cheeks turned a light blue from the praise. “I had predicted that we would need to leave eventually, so I had some of the stuff packed already,” Connor admitted to Hank. It was smart thinking, but Hank felt a bit guilty that Connor had to deal with this on his own. He should have tried to prepare more beforehand, but that was in the past now. What mattered was getting Connor somewhere safe.
“C’ mon, load Sumo’s stuff in the car and get in. I’ll explain what’s going on then.” With that, Connor grabbed Sumo’s stuff and the bag of food. Hank leashed Sumo up, pausing in the kitchen to grab Cole’s picture before heading out. He turned back to look at his house, bidding it and the memories in it a temporary goodbye. He promised that when this was all sorted out, they’d be back.
---
Hank picked an abandoned house on the edge of town. It would be better to leave Detroit altogether, but they weren’t prepared to do that at the moment. So, they would stay there for a few days while Hank and Connor planned what to do next. When Hank had told Connor what was happening with the police, he was distraught. They were planning on killing all of them. Connor moved the stuff inside of the house while Hank hid the car inside of the abandoned garage. It wasn’t the best place to stay, but it was relatively well maintained and Connor only predicted a 3% chance of the house giving out while they were there as long as they stuck to the first floor.
It was nightfall by the time the pair was settled in. Connor had set up a makeshift cot for Hank. He wished that he could make a better bed for him, but it was the best that he could do with what was given to him. They were both sitting on the pallet, Hank eating a can of chicken soup that Connor had warmed up for him. Sumo laid across their feet. It was quiet, the slight draft from the window coming into the living room where they were.
That was until there was a long creak as the front door was opened. “What the hell?” Hank turned to Connor. Connor had made sure to lock the front door. The question of what happened was quickly answered as none other than Markus walked into the living room. Hank jumped to his feet. “What the hell do you think you’re doing here?”
