“Hey!” As fast as Tabby grabbed at the air, Brian was faster. He wiggled her cell for emphasis, keeping it just out of reach.
“That’s enough doom scrolling.” The screen clicked off and disappeared into his back pocket, despite Tabby’s scowl deepening. She sat up on the couch, arms folded across the back, eyes narrowed beneath furrowed brow.
“It’s stress relief.”
“It’s not. The phone has taken my sunshine away.”
A small crack softened Tabby’s expression. “I’m sorry babe. It’s just… hard, y’know? When customers you like come into the bar, worried about being able to pay their bills. And…”
It was Brian’s turn to raise one eyebrow. “And me?”
Tabby nodded. “I know it’s not like you asked to be shot by some bargain basement robber.”
“It was barely a shot. More a graze.” The was a certain contagion to Brian’s smirk, and the last of Tabby’s tension faded.
“Okay, fair. I promise, only happy pictures of kittens on my phone.”
“Nice try. But we’re going on a ride first. You get your phone back when we see the ocean.”
Tabby’s smile was full of sunshine once more. Doom scrolling was one thing, kittens were better, but nothing healed the way water and her husband could. “Deal.”

doylist explanation for why Gidel is only in Fellow's non-idle lesson animations: probably something about space constraints and making sure two sprites in one seat aren't covering anyone else when they're not in focus
watsonian explanation for why Gidel is only in Fellow's non-idle lesson animations: he snuck in and is hiding from the teachers, don't give him away 🤫
(I've reached my limit of unsuccessful attempts at pulling them before I need to save keys for Halloween, so I've been living vicariously through youtube videos...but the fact that Gidel just pops up from under the desk to wave his arms around happily is really testing my resolve. D: I'm gonna die when they finally get to do alchemy...)

The best trope of all is:
Doing the right thing will have terrible consequences.
They do the right thing.
They suffer for it.
But in the end, doing the right thing allows things to work out better than they could have imagined.
