Got jumpscared by my own full legal name showing up in my email notifications bc I forgot I emailed my code to myself today just in case my VM ends up stopping working again (I got nervous & didn't wanna lose my progress lol)
Goldfish level memory retention
& the funny thing is that the email itself is just. This

Full Legal Name code ⢠hi
#speculation nation#title 'code' email is just 'hi'. with the .c file attached of course#honestly i had a very productive day in lab today. i got the core structure of the program down and made sure it all worked#testing it with One of the sorting algorithms. and it worked!!#the lab is to code functions for different kinds of sorts. like bubble sort selection sort and uhh. some other shit idr rn#and have the functions take timestamps from before and after they run the sorts to calculate the elapsed time#and we have to run this for array sizes of like. 10 50 500 etc etc up to like 50000 or smth? if i remember right.#and then once all that's done we take the output and graph the time elapsed for each type of sort/search per array sizes#so today at lab i made the random array generator function. a swap function. the execution function. bubble sort. and main.#main calls the execution function passing in the array sizes. execution(10); execution(50); etc#execution defines the array of that size. then calls the random number generator to populate the array. then passes it to the sort functions#tested with my one bubble sort function. which finished in like 0.00003 seconds or smth for array size 10#BUT taking the time stamps was tricky. there are a lot of ways to do that. and time(); in c is in full seconds#i ended up asking the TA if he had a recommendation for what to use bc theres a LOT of time functions out there#and full seconds isnt precise enough for this purpose. & he recommended clock()!!#records number of clock ticks which is NOT the same as seconds. but when u divide it by uh. forgetting it rn but it's a constant#that will turn it into actual seconds. clock tics per sec?? smth like that.#so anyways very productive đ i just need to set main up to call execution function for all the different array sizes#and then write all the functions for the different sorts/searches. but i have the core structure down with the bubble sort function#(specifically with the time stamps and the print function after) that i will copy-paste for all the other functions#and then inside them i put the basic code. none of it's complicated. all can be found on the internet easy.#SO!!!!! honestly i think itd take me less than an hour to finish. tho plotting out that graph is going to be annoying#something like 6 sizes per 5 sort/search functions. painstakingly copy pasting each one into excel or smth lol#but yea im content with how much ive gotten done. yippee!!!!#now i just need to finish my web programming lab before sunday night. blehhhhh

Back at it again with another OC, the Iron Maiden ! what are the secret of this serious and elegant toy ?
i hope you'll like her introduction, it took me a while to write, i also had the help of a friend who gave me tips and suggestion, if you read this you know who you are and i thank you.
Picture doesn't belong to me, credits to the artist, found on pinterest.
I wanted to make a toy with element from "The Thing" and add more horror to my ocs, there's also mention of other toy like baron, eudora and the king as well as the mysterious [REDACTED] and the reject.
Writing tips, critics and request are all welcomed here so don't hesitate to send them in the comments.
Some elements might be changed in the future but i'll make an edit if it's the case.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Archived information about the ââIron Maidenââ:
-Experiment 1167 known as the ââIron Maidenââ was created in 1992 to be the bodyguard of higher-ups of the company but other Maidens were also put to work at a cafe built in the game station.
-She measure 1m85 or 6,06ft in height, her body is separated in 3 parts, the first known as the âouter shellâ is made of carbon and metal giving it a metallic shine and rigid movement in some case, the second is the cage inside the âouter shellâ who help the final part of the body to work properly as it cover the entire interior and is akin to a skeleton of sort.
[Third part of the body will be discussed in another part of the document].
-Like huggy-wuggy she is capable of extreme act of violence thanks to her unshakable loyalty in the company and natural obedience, making the Iron Maiden an excellent toy for protection in Playtime Co.
Early life :
-Penelope Spencer was an orphan for as long as she could remember as she was given to playtime Co soon after her birth, the only memento of her parents being a letter explaining they couldnât take care of her because of financial issue and another section with her given name and some apologies for abandoning her.
-Despite this rough start at life Penelope adjusted easily to the life of an orphan and quickly built a reputation of a reliable and obedient child willing to work and take any task given to them, sometime even helping the staff of playtime to organize activities for the children.
-Speaking of the staff, be they counselors, scientist or random cleaning crew she quickly came to associate the staff of playtime as her family even if she would only see them once or everyday. This was swiftly put to use as the staff were ordered to build a good relation with Penelope in order to gain her trust and possibly spy on the children at the orphanage or other task involving collecting information on other children without having to use the counselors or another toy.
-Soon enough she was acting as a spy of sort gathering information on whoever the scientist ordered her to spy and was rewarded with toys, books and better living conditions at the orphanage much to the anger or confusion of the orphans who didnât understand how Penelope gained such privileges.
-The staff nurtured her loyalty by acting more and more like a family to her, giving her the connection she was always after. Even if she was an asset of the company more and more people came to appreciate her for who she was and not what she was doing for the company, even cold-hearted scientist started to like the blonde girl and her friendly, playful nature.
PROCEDURE :
-She was selected for the procedure rather early in her life and finally taken after turning 11 when the scientists didnât need her around the orphanage anymore and decided to give her a better station (in their judgment) by turning her into the first Iron Maiden.
-The body and procedure for the Iron Maiden was upgraded and modified several time to make sure only the best candidates could be turned easily and hopefully retain a maximum amount of cognitive functions. The first procedure, specially designed for Penelope, was meant to make her into an even better Maiden compared to the future generations that came after her.
-The procedure was a resounding success despite the grueling process, her vital organs were removed and placed in a vat of Poppy-Gel for 48h in order to fuse with them and being capable of transferring the blob of flesh into itâs new body. Once the organs and Gel have fused they need to be carefully transported into the Maidenâs open body and laid in the cage then closed and left in a room with adequate temperature and constant life support to ensure the blob of flesh can properly awaken and move on itâs own inside the Maiden.
-This so called âBlob of fleshâ is all that remains of the subject before being transferred in itâs new body, this mass of moving tissue, fused organs, eyes and deformed hands is capable of moving on itâs own slowly and âpossessingâ any maidenâs body provided itâs empty. The blob can be carried by hand but protective equipment is needed because it can produce an acidic liquid which can penetrate the skin of a human being with enough time and exposure.
-When placed in a Maiden, it anchors itself to the cage and then adapt to the shape of the body to occupy it in itâs entirety in order to use it, scientists described this disturbing process as âfilling up a body with a living, breathing, massive organ and seeing it come to lifeâ, once the adaptation is done the testing of cognitive functions starts such as using the body by moving the hands and legs or speaking because unlike many toys the Maiden doesnât use a voice-box but modify their own vocal cords to take on a voice they like.
-Penelope or now, the Iron Maiden, adapted to her body extremely quickly despite a short period of confusion and took her security training with disturbing ease while perfecting her stealth and mannerism as she would blend in with the other Maidenâs or toys to gather information or dispose of them if needed.
Work for Playtime.Co :
-With her training done extremely quickly she was handed to Leith Pierre to act as his personal bodyguard and assassin whenever needed, she would also clean his office or bring whatever drinks he required or paper to work on, she was virtually always seen with Leith or never too far away.
-Her targets marked for assassination were often whistle-blowers, nosy journalists or disobedient employees whose usefulness came to an end either because they uncovered something they shouldnât have or harmed the companyâs interest in some way.
-She was also seen handling customers at the cafe in the Game Station when something went wrong or to lead them to a higher-up if they were to meet one although many people reported feeling the âUncanny Valleyâ effect when looking at her or another Maiden for too long, this was further amplified by the fact that many Maidens kept their eyes closed (for reason weâll explain further down this document).
-While she preferred handling her targets alone, she would sometime team up with another Maiden or even the Rat King on rare occasions however the two toys didnât like each other much as the Maiden was suspicious of the King while he found her to be an uncompromising zealot regarding the companyâs order.
-She was rewarded for her work with a better holding cell than most toys and it was more akin to a private room than an actual cell, the food given to her as a result was also of much better quality and she was even permitted to eat with other employees.
Hour of Joy:
-High involvement, she and some other maidens were focused on escorting the few high value employees like Leith Pierre to safety and exterminating whatever toy or adults coming their way, virtually every Maiden sided with the company and started an extermination campaign in the company and the various levels to purge it of the rebellious toys to varying degrees of success.
-Penelope and the [REDACTED] were the sole people responsible for Leith Pierreâs escape to safety much to the absolute rage of the toys who learned of this, Penelope was also responsible for the single highest death toll of any toys in the factory as she tore a bloody path to allow Leith to escape.
-Leithâs final order were for her to work with the [REDACTED] to capture the Prototype and secure the factory to acceptable level no matter the time it took or the methods used to do so. Leith was escorted by a high security team and left the Iron Maiden to her task, one she set out to do immediately.
-She then went to the [REDACTED] level and contacted the [REDACTED] in order to start the reclamation of the factory and capture of the prototype, this is the last know sighting of the Maiden while some toys reports seeing her in the prison alongside the Warden or in the Labs hunting the toys there.
Design:
-The attire of the Maiden is comprised of a maid uniform with an iron diadem, a white and black uniform with a royal symbol at the bottom of the robe. The symbol vary depending on the Maidenâs station and seniority.
-Her hair is made of silk to complete her regal appearance and unfortunately require a lot of maintenance, this is often done by another maiden or two employees dedicated to taking care of her hair.
-Her body is made of carbon with a mix of pliable and lightweight metal in order to sustain damage, contain the blob of flesh and itâs acid at the cost of sometime causing the maid to have rigid movement, especially when walking, talking or even cleaning.
-The first generation of Maiden were forced to keep their eyes closed as the flesh inside of them would bleed out of the socket which forced later generations to be outfitted with a small glass panel in the eye socket to prevent the bleeding.
Abilities:
-The maiden is capable of creating an acidic liquid similar to the bile produced by the stomach, she can use this acid and spit it at the enemy to melt the skin or fur over prolonged exposures and period of time. She can also coat the flesh of her body to use it as a defense mechanism or even specific part of the body such as the hands to create a lethal weapon if she were to grab or punch someone.
-The most horrifying ability of a maiden is to open her body in any way she sees fit as the cage inside her body and the outer shell is capable of splitting open in an almost limitless amount of shape like splitting her head open or even her entire body in half to absorb a very unfortunate target, she can also split another part of her body in various disturbing shape such as forcing her hand to split in dozens of parts to better grab a target.
-Once a target is incapacitated, she will split her body in whatever way she sees fit (often splitting in half) and force the target or pieces of them inside her for consumption, this is even worse for a target who can fit inside her as they are slowly dissolved by the acid and heat of the flesh.
-In some rare occasion, a Maiden is also capable of sticking to the ceiling and crawl on it if the splitting is done in the right way, this was used by some employees to give the scare of a lifetime to other when they saw a Maiden and their exposed flesh looking at them with deformed eyes and hands from the ceiling.
Employees and toy's opinion of the Iron Maiden:
-Leith Pierre who was happy about her service although slightly unnerved by the impassive face or stillness of her body, saying it was âa moving statue, unseen and undetectableâ.
-Stella Greyber who saw the Iron Maiden for what they truly were, a security and surveillance system. She didnât like them and tried to avoid them but was assigned one nonetheless, she would try to converse with the maiden but she found them to be poor conversationalist.
-Harley Sawyer who considered them a massive improvement upon all the other Bigger Body and a masterpiece of union between science and biology, although he was never assigned one because Leith Pierre didnât trust him with a Maiden.
-The Rat King who hated her because he saw a twisted reflection of himself in her, his loyalty toward his friends and Clara was twisted to become an enforcer for the company while Penelope betrayed all the orphans for some recognition. This unnerved him as it showed him what he couldâve been, a monster dedicated to the company willing to do anything to please them.
-Baron Bon-Bon who was scared of her, seeing her as an assassin ready to strike anyone whom the company saw as a burden, he worked harder when she was around, desperate to not be seen as a target much to the twisted amusement of the employees.
-Eudora who did her best to avoid the Maiden and worked quietly when she was around, scared of the quiet monster who loomed around her train, she sadly had to work with the Maiden on some occasion when delivering certain items to the lower levels of playtime.
-The [REDACTED] who saw her as the perfect tool and ally, willing to strike down anyone and do anything in the name of the company no matter how gruesome the order is. The [REDACTED] who worked with her even after the Hour of Joy and upgraded her when needed to continue her sinister purpose.
The others Maidens who saw her as the example to follow when it came to service, obedience and performance as she was a toy held in high regard by the highest employees of the company, none faltered from doing their job be it serving customers or killing a curious journalist.
Trivia :
-Penelope was said to always be smiling or trying to cheer up other, this facade was never broken and served to gain the trust of other children. While she wasnât as popular as David Bohman she still managed to gain a large group of friends and some of them even helped her to spy on other children although they didnât know it was to help the company.
-Some called her a âMini miss-Delightâ due to her happy and sunny smile, always saying how her presence brightened a room with happiness and joy, she had few bullies and would even turn older, meaner children to her side in a few days at most.
-Her room was bigger and more comfortable than most orphans thanks to her service for the company as a child, her room had a radio, a bookshelf along with many toys that few orphans could afford or even obtain in the company.
-The first time her procedure was truly discussed with her was when she saw other Bigger Bodies such as Catnap or the Baron and asked a scientist if she could get a âcool body like themâ, her wish was granted sooner than she ever expected.
-Even as a bodyguard for Leith Pierre himself she was still required to work at the cafe and often dealt with complaints or rowdy customers (as rowdy as someone can get drinking tea or coffee), she didnât hate this part of her job but she appeared notably happier when she could roam around the Game Station following some employees or potential target.
-An avid consumer of tea, especially lavender tea which would often be shared with other Maidens or any employees who were nearby.
-As a child she enjoyed the Treasure Hunt of Baron Bon-Bon and won it many times, earning her two Brass Compass and a Golden Coin with her own face on it. She would also play with Mommy Long-Legs a lot, finding it fun to try and tangling her legs.
-Stella Greyber notoriously hated the Iron Maiden for who and what she was, a security system. This ironically put her high on the list of people to be watched by the Maiden much to the ire of Stella who complained to Leith about it, only to be told that each Head of the company (except Harley Sawyer) was assigned one to serve as an assistant.
-Penelope, even as the Iron Maiden would often read her books and even write some herself, most were fairy-tales or folklore from her country and had varying success with the orphans of Playcare.
-The Iron Maiden stealthâs was almost as good as the Rat King, the two would often be compared in some competition amongst the guards and made bets on who could fight the other or best them in various stealth-based bet. She could move around silently while standing up and even sneak up on someone in broad daylight and appear as if she suddenly teleported.
-Her eyes were almost always closed and despite this she could move around a huge crowd or in complete darkness without much trouble, she would only smile when asked how she could do this.
-She was later given the glass panels all Maiden were later equipped with but even then, her eyes would remain closed at all time but those who saw them said they had a beautiful purple color.
-During the Hour of Joy she would fight against many Bigger Body such as Boxy-Boo, the Reject (who made the most damage and was the most difficult to fight off) and huggy-wuggy already weakened after his fight with Eudora, few wounds or scratch were present on her body.
-Her collaboration with the [REDACTED] is a closely guarded secret and those who knows of it often try to understand their plan, only to receive an unexpected visit from the Maiden and be left with grievous wounds or outright dead.
-To this day few Maidens are left and most toy in the factory knows better than to mess with the ivory-faced Maiden, she never hunts them but word of her presence on a level of the factory is often enough to incite the toys to retreat until her departure.

⢠random slutty thoughts, feat. mingyu â˘
the valentineâs day / co-worker crush one

mingyu has sat in the cubicle next to yours long enough to know exactly how shitty your ex made valentineâs day last year, plus he knows you definitely havenât even thought about a valentineâs date since you just accepted a stack of last minute work, because to quote you, âfuck this pretend holidayâ
but he really hopes to change your mind
mingyuâs had a crush on you since you started working in his group, maybe before that even when he would just see you in the break room sometimes
at first he thought you were a bit unapproachable, but the longer he sat next to you, the more he realized you were a really good co-worker and friend - you always have great ideas for projects and you donât make him feel like shit for not knowing every single thing like most people in the group, plus youâre always happy to grab coffee when he wants to complain about how something personal
he was glad when you had offered to exchange phone numbers so he could message you âjust wheneverâ - it took him a week to finally decide what to send - a photo proving that he really uses the name âjamesâ as his âcoffee order nameâ because he was tired of the misspellings and you would not believe him - you had practically cackled at âjamesâ
he was surprised when you asked if he had a date that night, âno, i havenât really been talking to anyoneâ besides you, he thought
âat least you wonât be stuck here all night, though,â you smiled, leaning towards your computer to read something
he nodded, âyeah, true,â even as he spoke, he started to poke around seeing if there were any assignments he needed to complete (he knew there werenât)
âwait, actually, sorry - thereâs this part i kind of need help with,â you mumbled from your slouched over position
he blushed and scooched his chair over to your side of the barrier, you had already moved so he could see your screen - he was glad that you seemed to always have problems with excel functions
he started tinkering with the spreadsheet while you read some documents next to him - before he realized it, he was ready for dinner
he leaned back, âwant to take a break?â it was a totally normal question
you nodded, âyes, please, Iâm so tired of looking at this,â you whispered and then stood up to look around the office, âwow, itâs like a horror movie in here - absolutely everyone is gone but usâ
he smiled knowing you mean zombie movies, which you proclaim to hate but still seem to know a lot about
âso what were you thinking?â you asked as you sit back down next to him - he notices when your knee bumps his leg
âhm, how bad do you think the waits are across the street?â
âoh fuck, i forgot, couples out in droves, right?â
he nods, watching you scrunch your face as you start checking for reservations close by - it takes a few minutes but youâre suddenly grabbing his sleeve, âoh my god, if we leave right now, we can just make it to a decent place,â you practically drag him along
the âdecentâ place is actually really nice, way more than he was expecting, but he was glad for once that he was in dress clothes - he actually looked like he was your date
they seated you in one of the open booths, another couple were right next to you - he had started to look at the menu when you nudged him with your foot, he glanced up to see you covertly glance at the other couple - mingyu almost laughed when he saw the girlâs foot was practically buried in the guyâs crotch and moving at a concerning pace
he blushed slightly at the scene and glanced back to you, seeing the dangerous smirk on your face, he suddenly felt the toe of your shoe press gently to his calf - he was quick to slip a warning hand onto your thigh, squeezing gently
âi think we can do better darling,â he whispered
you looked too game, âoh, can we, sweetheart?â
he wasnât sure what to make of your sugary voice, but he knew you were horribly competitive (both of you, if he were honest, could be a bit scary at company retreats)
he didnât hesitate to nod, âof course we can,â he answered in a low tone, his thumb tracing circles against your thigh
when the waiter came back, you both ordered drinks, but he noticed quickly when the other couple conspicuously got up at the same time and wandered towards the bathroom
he sipped his wine, âdid they really just go to the bathroom?â
you giggle, âthey definitely didâ
he swirled his glass gently, âokay, so if we go into the menâs room after them, do we just need to be louder?â he was genuinely asking
you laughed behind your hand, âseriously?â you grinned, âitâs not like we get a peleton this time,â you shoot back, voice soft in a way that makes his stomach flutter
âyeah, but,â he wasnât sure where he was going with this, âthey were annoying, why not be, you know,â he shrugged
âbe more annoying, my darling, dearest,â you smiled and covered his hand with yours
he flushed but had a sudden thought, âlook if we freak them out, i will literally pay for a full weekend at that glamping place you keep ogling,â he was very serious
âoh, okay, no wait, it has to be the one with the hot tub that overlooks the trees,â you were getting serious
he nodded, âiâll give you my card, book whatever you want,â he was too sincere
he noticed the slight blush blooming across your cheeks, âyou know itâs like a couples thing, right?â
âso, you can book for two and go alone, whatever,â in his mind this was completely reasonable to offer a co-worker who he clearly had just a crush on, especially when he hadnât confessed
he watched you bite your lip lightly, âokay, but shouldnât we both go? itâs like a group activity,â he flushed, knowing youâre looking at him much too clearly
âjust come on or weâll miss our chance,â he stood, glancing around and walking towards the bathroom
he pushed the door open and was immediately assaulted with sounds, really wet sounds
he caught you as you walked through the door, knowing you would laugh at the sounds, he pressed his hand across your lips and guided you to the stall next to the occupied one, locking the door
you glance at the stall wall, rolling your eyes at the sudden feminine cry of âoh, baby - yeah, just like thatâ
you lean close to him, âmake it good, okay,â you whisper, your hands suddenly ghosting down his chest and stomach
heâs shocked when you ran your hands down the front of his trousers, âfuck, daddy, show me how hard you are,â you say in a breathy voice as your hands press roughly to his hips
he bit his lip hard to avoid laughing in total shock, âthat what you want baby girl, my hard cock filling that tight pussy?â he asked, his voice lower than he expected, even though he was leaning down close, whispering against your throat, obviously in character
âmhmm, yes, i want you so badly - iâve thought about it all day, daddy - iâve just been sitting, waiting for you, all wet and ready for your cockâ
he paused hearing this, his mouth immediately dry, he could feel your hand working him through his pants
he kissed your throat gently, âdaddyâs good little girl, just waiting at her desk, hoping to get fucked,â he nipped your earlobe gently, âmy naughty little girl,â he whispered as he bit your throat
he was momentarily stunned when you pulled your shirt down enough to expose your tits and your perfect nipples, but he didnât even think before he dipped down, latching onto one and then the other, hearing your moans, as he licked and sucked âyes, daddyâ - âyeah, just like thatâ - âfuck, i bet you could empty meâ
he leaned up, catching your mouth in a soft kiss, he licked into you, tasting you as he pushed up your skirt, his cock was way too hard at the idea of your full tits
he slid his fingers under the hem of your panties, immediately feeling the slick waiting for him, âoh, baby, so wet for me,â he barely broke the kiss to murmur
he watched your face as he plunged his first two fingers inside your hot, wet pussy - you gasped softly, pulling his hair roughly as you did, âyes, daddy, play with me, youâve kept me waiting so long,â you whimper as he crooked his fingers to hit the soft spongy spot he knew your ex had never been able to find
he had completely forgotten the other couple - all he cared about was the way you were writhing in pleasure in front of him - that and the way your cunt was clenching around him, it was so fucking tight and already dripping
he pressed close, âcome for me baby girl, i can feel you holding back, just let go, make a mess for daddy to clean up,â he whispered
you pressed close, âgive me one more finger first,â you breathed heavily against his skin
he was happy to slip his third finger in, stretching you and then scissoring you open too, pressing against your tight walls
you moaned loudly, âoh, fuck, yes - daddy, donât stop, make me feel goodâ
he wasnât worried about how loud you were - it was part of the point, but when your pussy suddenly gushed, âfuck,â he breathed, feeling your juices wet his thigh
he held you close as he he still worked his fingers inside your pussy, you yelped as a second orgasm tore through you, a new splash of hot pussy juices running down his thigh as you shivered with pleasure in his arms, grasping blindly for him, needing him to hold you as your orgasm worked through you
âmhmm, daddy, oh, fuck, did i do good?â
he was quick, âyeah, baby, youâre so perfect, so messy and wet for me,â he pressed soft kisses to your cheek, nuzzling close to you
it was obvious that you were more fucked out than either of you expected - he definitely didnât hear anything from the couple in the other stall, but he wasnât especially concerned either
he suddenly turned you around, pulling your back to his chest, as he unbuckled his belt and unbuttoned his pants, âstill want daddyâs cock, baby girl?â
you nod, âyes, please, use me like a toy, make me yoursâ
he breathed slowly, lining his cock up with your cunt, he needed to control himself or he would come too fast
he plunged in, pausing to breathe, to feel your slick cunt stretching so wide to take all of him - he listened to your whimpers and soft pleas as you adjusted to being full
but he waited to move - and when he did, he was slow at first, feeling every bit of you squeezing him, wanting him
and when you leaned back, âfuck me daddy, fuck me like you wantâ
the way you gazed up at him told him everything - that you knew - you already knew exactly how he felt
and so he plunged in, setting a quick pace, not being afraid to snap his hips - he wanted to fuck you raw
and when he felt you clenching and fluttering around him, he pulled you close, holding you tight, and reaching down to work your clit, he gasped at the feeling of your third orgasm, the feeling of your slick against the head of his cock was too much
he came, he clenched his teeth together tightly, moaning low against your skin, his cum filling you, he kept moving, slowly fucking his cum deeper into you
âkeep it inside baby,â he demanded, breathless, finally letting you go
you nod with a little smile, âwhat do i get if i do?â
he laughed softly, shaking his head, and fixed his pants
he helped you fix your clothes, glancing to see how massive your pupils were
he stopped and nuzzled close, feeling nothing but tenderness for you, âwant to leave?â
you nodded, holding tight to his lapels, âcan we still fuck though?â
he smiled, âmmmh, of course we can baby - we can fuck all you want,â he kissed you softly - he meant every word

Mortholme Post-Mortem
The Dark Queen of Mortholme has been out for two weeks, and I've just been given an excellent excuse to write some more about its creation by a lenghty anonymous ask.
Under the cut, hindsight on the year spent making Mortholme and answers to questions about game dev, grouped under the following topics:
Time spent on development Programming Obstacles Godot Animation Pixel art Environment assets Writing Completion Release
Regarding time spent on development
Nope, Iâve got no idea anymore how long I spent on Mortholme. It took a year but during that time I worked on like two other games and whatever else. And although I started with the art, I worked on all parts simultaneously to avoid getting bored. This is what I can say:
Art took a ridiculous amount of time, but that was by choice (or compulsion, one might say). I get very excitable and particular about it. At most I was making about one or two Hero animations in a day (for a total of 8 + upgraded versions), but anything involving the Queen took multiple times longer. When I made the excecutive decision that her final form was going to have a bazillion tentacles I gave up on scheduling altogether.
Coding went quickly at the start when I was knocking out a feature after another, until it became the ultimate slow-burn hurdle at the end. Testing, bugfixing, and playing Jenga with increasingly unwieldy code kept oozing from one week to the next. For months, probably? My memoryâs shot but I have a mark on my calendar on the 18th of August that says âMortholme doneâ. Mustâve been some optimistic deadline before the ooze.
Writing happened in extremely productive week-long bursts followed by nothing but nitpicky editing while I focused on other stuff. Winner in the âchanged most oftenâ category, for sure.
Sound was straightforward, after finishing a new set of animations I spent a day or two to record and edit SFX for them. Music I originally scheduled two weeks for, but hubris and desire for more variants bumped it to like a month.
Regarding programming
The Hero AI is certainly the part that I spent most of my coding time on. The basic way the guaranteed dodging works is that all the Queenâs attacks send a signal to the Hero, who calculates a âdanger zoneâ based on the type of attack and the Queenâs location. Then, if the Hero is able to dodge that particular attack (a probability based on how much it's been used & story progression), they run a function to dodge it.
Each attack has its own algorithm that produces the best safe target position to go to based on the Heroâs current position (and other necessary actions like jumping). Those algorithms needed a whole lot of testing to code counters for all the scenarios that might trip the Hero up.
The easiest or at least most fun parts for me to code are the extra bells and whistles that arenât critical but add flair. Like in the Heroâs case, the little touches that make them seem more human: a reaction speed delay that increases over time, random motions and overcompensation that decrease as they gain focus, late-game Hero taking prioritising aggressive positiniong, a âwait for last secondâ function that lets the Hero calculate how long itâll take them to move to safety and use the information to squeeze an extra attack inâŚ
The hardest attack was the magic circle, as it introduced a problem in my code so far. The second flare can overlap with other attacks, meaning the Hero had to keep track of two danger zones at once. For a brief time I wanted to create a whole new system that would constantly update a map of all current danger zonesâthat would allow for any number of overlapping attacks, which would be really cool! Unfortunately it didnât gel with my existing code, and I couldnât figure out its multitudes of problems since, wellâŚ
Regarding obstacles
Thing is, Iâm hot garbage as a programmer. My game devâs all self-taught nonsense. So after a week of failing to get this cool system to work, I scrapped it and instead made a spaghetti code monstrosity that made magic circle run on a separate danger zone, and decided Iâd make no more overlapping attacks. Thatâs easy; I just had to buffer the timing of the animation locks so that the Hero would always have time to move away. (I still wanted to keep the magic circle, since itâs fun for the player to try and trick the Hero with it.)
Thereâs my least pretty yet practical solo dev advice: if you get stuck because you canât do something, you can certainly try to learn how to do it, but occasionally the only way to finish a project within a decade to work around those parts and let them be a bit crap.
Iâm happy to use design trickery, writing and art to cover for my coding skills. Like, despite the anonymous askerâs description, the Heroâs dodging is actually far from perfect. I knew there was no way it was ever going to be, which is why I wrote special dialogue to account for a player finding an exploit that breaks the intended gameplay. (And indeed, when the game was launched, someone immediately found it!)
Regarding Godot
Itâs lovely! I switched from Unity years ago and itâs so much simpler and more considerate of 2D games. The way its node system emphasises modularity has improved my coding a lot.
New users should be aware that a lot of tutorials and advice you find online may be for Godot 3. If something doesnât work, search for what the Godot 4 equivalent is.
Regarding animation
Iâm a professional animator, so my list of tips and techniques is a tad long⌠Iâll just give a few resource recommendations: read up on the classic 12 principles of animation (or the The Illusion of Life, if youâd like the whole book) and test each out for yourself. Not every animation needs all of these principles, but basically every time youâll be looking at an animation and wondering how to make it better, the answer will be in paying attention to one or more of them.
Game animation is its own beast, and different genres have their own needs. Iâd recommend studying animations that do what youâd like to do, frame by frame. If youâre unsure of how exactly to analyse animation for its techniques, youtube channel New Frame Plus shows an excellent example.
Oh, and film yourself some references! The Queen demanded so much pretend mace swinging that it broke my hoover.
Regarding pixel art
The pixel art style was picked for two reasons: 1. to evoke a retro game feel to emphasise the meta nature of the narrative, and 2. because itâs faster and more forgiving to animate in than any of my other options.
At the very start I was into the idea of doing a painterly styleâHollow Knight was my first soulslikeâbut quickly realised that Iâd either have to spend hundreds of hours animating the characters, or design them in a simplistic way that I deemed too cutesy for this particular game. (Hollow Knight style, one day Iâd love to emulate youâŚ)
I donât use a dedicated program, just Photoshop for everything like a chump. Pixel art doesnât need anything fancy, although Iâm sure specialist programs will keep it nice and simple.
Pixel artâs funny; its limitations make it dependent on symbolism, shortcuts and viewer interpretation. You could search for some tutorials on basic principles (like avoiding âjaggiesâ or the importance of contrast), but ultimately youâll simply want to get a start in it to find your own confidence in it. I began dabbling years ago by asking for character requests on Tumblr and doodling them in pixels in whatever way I could think of.
Regarding environment assets
The Queenâs throne room consists of two main spritesâone background and one separate bit of the door for the Hero disappear behindâand then about fifty more for the lighting setup. Thereâs six different candle animations, thereâs lines on the floor that need to go on top of character reflections, all the candle circles and lit objects are separated so that the candles can be extinguished asynchronously; and then thereâs purple phase 2 versions of all of the above.
This is all rather dumb. Thereâs simpler ways in Godot to do 2D lighting with shaders and a built-in system (I use those too), but I wanted control over the exact colours so I just drew everything in Photoshop the way I wanted it. Still, it highlights how mostly you only need a single background asset and separated foreground objects; except if you need animated objects or stuff that needs to change while the gameâs running, youâll get a whole bunch more.
I wholeheartedly applaud having a go at making your own game art, even if you donât have any art background! The potential for cohesion in all aspects of designâart, game, narrative, soundâis at the heart of why video games are such an exciting medium!
Regarding writing
Finding the voices of the Queen and the Hero was the quick part of the process. They figured that out they are almost as soon as writing started. Iâd been mulling this game over in my mind for so long, I had already a specific idea in mind of what the two of them stood for, conceptually and thematically. When they started bantering, I felt like all I really had to do was to guide it along the storyline, and then polish.
What ended up taking so long was that there was too much for them to say for how short the game needed to be to not feel overstretched. Since Iâd decided to go with two dialogue options on my linear story, it at least gave me twice the amount of dialogue that I got to write, but it wasnât enough!
The first large-scale rewrite was me going over the first draft and squeezing in more interesting things for the Queen and the Hero to discuss, more branching paths and booleans. There was this whole thing where the playerâs their dialogue choices over multiple conversations would lead them to about four alternate interpretations of why the Queen is the way she is. This was around the time I happened to finally play Disco Elysium, so of course I also decided to also add a ton of microreactivity (ie. small changes in dialogue that acknowledge earlier player choices) to cram in even more alternate dialogue. I spent ages tinkering with the exact nuances till I was real proud of it.
Right until the playtesters of this convoluted contraption found the story to be unclear and confusing. For some reason. So for my final rewrite, I picked out my favourite bits and cut everything else. With the extra branching gone, there was more room to improve the pacing so the core of the story could breathe. The microreactivity got to stay, at least!
A sample of old dialogue from the overcomplicated version:
Regarding completion
The question was âwhat kept me going to actually finish the game, since that is a point many games never even get to meet?â and itâs a great one because I forgot thatâs a thing. Difficulties finishing projects, that isâI used to think it was hard, but not for many years. Maybe Iâve completed so many small-scale games already that it hardly seems that unreasonable of an expectation? (Game jams. You should do game jams.)
I honestly never had any doubt I was going to finish Mortholme. When I started in late autumn last year, I was honestly expecting the concept to be too clunky to properly function; but I wished to indulge in silliness and make it exist anyways. That vision wouldâve been easy to finish, a month or two of low stakes messing around, no biggie. (Like a game jam!)
Those months ran out quickly as I had too much fun making the art to stop. It mustâve been around the time I made this recording that it occurred to me that even if the game was going to be clunky, it could still genuinely work on the back of good enough storytelling techniqueânot just writing, but also the animation and the Heroâs evolving behaviour during the gameplay segments which Iâd been worried about. The reaction to my early blogging was also heartening. Other people could also imagine how this narrative could be interesting!
A few weeks after that I started planning out the narrative beats I wanted the dialogue to reach, and came to the conclusion that I really, really wanted it to work. Other people had to see this shit, I thought. Thereâs got to be freaks out there whoâd love to experience this tragedy, and Iâm eager to deliver.
Thatâs why I was fine with the projectâs timeline stretching out. If attention to detail and artistry was going to make this weird little story actually come to life, then great, because thatâs exactly the part of development I love doing most. Projects taking longer than expected can be frustrating, but accepting that as a common part of game dev is what allows confidence in eventual their completion regardless.
Regarding release
Dear anonymousâs questions didnât involve post-release concerns, but it seems fitting to wrap up the post-mortem by talking about the two things about Mortholme's launch that were firsts for me, and thus I was unprepared for.
1. This was the first action game I've coded. Well, sort ofâI consider Mortholme to be a story first and foremost, with gameplay so purposefully obnoxious it benefits from not being thought of as a ânormalâ game. Still, the action elements are there. For someone who usually sticks to making puzzle games since theyâre easier to code, this was my most mechanically fragile game yet. So despite all my attempts at playtesting and failsafes, it had a whole bunch of bugs on release.
Game-breaking bugs, really obvious bugs, weird and confusing bugs. It took me over a week to fix all that was reported (and Iâm only hoping they indeed are fully fixed). That feels slow; I shouldâve expected it was going to break so I couldâve been faster to respond. Ah well, next time I know what Iâll be booking my post-release week for.
2. This was my first game that I let players give me money for. Sure, itâs pay-what-you-want, but for someone as allergic to business decisions as I am, it was a big step. I guess I was worried of being shown that nobody would consider my art worth financial compensation. Well, uh, that fear has gone out of the window now. Iâm blown away by how kind and generous the players of Mortholme have been with their donations.
I canât imagine it's likely to earn a living wage from pouring hundreds of hours into pay-what-you-want passion projects, but the support has me heartened to seek out a future where I could make these weird stories and a living both.
Those were the unexpected parts. The part I must admit I was expectingâbut still infinitely grateful forâwas that Mortholme did in fact reach them freaks whoâd find it interesting. The responses, comments, analyses, fan works (thereâs fic and art!! the dream!!), inspiration, and questions (like the ones prompting me to write this post-mortem) people have shared with me thanks to Mortholme⌠Theyâve all truly been what I was hoping for back when I first gave myself emotions thinking about a mean megalomaniac and stubborn dipshit.
Thank you for reading, thank you for playing, and thank you for being around.
#so that got a bit verbose. you simply cannot give me this many salient questions and expect me otherwise tbh#the dark queen of mortholme#indie dev#game dev#dev log

hi! Random question maybe, but you seem very knowledgeable about hockey: there's a post on the PWHL subreddit right now asking about the differences between PWHL and NHL hockey. A lot of people in the comments are saying the skill level in the PWHL is much lower, which to me a weird statement for multiple reasons, but I don't know enough to disagree or agree with certainty. Do you have any thoughts? In general, what do you think are the differences between the style of play in the two leagues right now (other than ofc level of physicality l)?
That is a weird statement, which I'll get into in a second. To me, the biggest differences are such.
Fundamentals. This is not a PWHL-specific statement. It also applies to the WNBA vs. the NBA, and baseball players drafted out of college vs. high school. With truly all the respect and love to my prep school coaches, college is where you learn how to play your sport. You get by on raw talent until you hit the college level (or, for Canadian men's hockey players, the junior level) and then you learn how to actually play. Men are spending 1-2 years in college before leaving for the show. Women do a full 4-5. It's hard to imagine someone like Jason Robertson (who I love) succeeding in the women's game, because he's not a very good pure skater. He got by on his raw offensive ability. If he were coming up through the NCAA, someone like Mark Johnson or Matt Desrosiers would have grabbed him and said, "You're doing extra shifts in the barn until you stop looking like you're drowning out there."
"Then the skill in nhl level is just insane. Passes are perfect, players can handle bouncing pucks easily, and most importantly positioning is excellent - players are almost always where they are supposed to be (because they are big and fast) so zone entry/exit is super smooth.
60 minutes of Flyers hockey would kill this Redditor. I can assure you passes are not perfect and positioning is abysmal in the NHL, because again... these are the fundamentals that players would learn if they weren't plucked out of college/juniors on the basis of their raw, unhoned talent.
Roster construction. This is largely a function of limited roster space. The PWHL has less than 1/4 the positions than the NHL does. In the men's game, each line has a defined role. The first two forward lines are your top scorers, the third line does most of the checking and defensive play, and your fourth O-line is meant to tucker out the opponents' best scorers. The PWHL doesn't really have checking lines, because there aren't really checking specialists. Instead, lines are determined by the whims of the coaches by a combination of seniority and "riding the hot hand" - players who score more get more ice time.
Goaltending. PWHL goalies are smaller than NHL goalies and working with the same size net. Someone like Ivan Fedotov (6'8") can take up more space just by standing there than someone like Emerance Maschmeyer (5'6"). As a result, PWHL goalies tend to be far more mobile, and they start their post-to-post movement early, trying to anticipate where the shot will come from so that they can physically get there and block it.
Speed vs. acceleration. I think the comments about size that people in that thread were mentioning are largely overblown because they forget that everything is relative. It only really counts in two dimensions. The first is in goaltending. The second is in movement. Taller players can cover more ground with each push, which helps with their speed. Smaller players, because they aren't dragging as much weight around the ice with them, can push off from a stop faster, which helps their acceleration. It's why KCS is such a pain in the ass to play against: if she and I are both standing at the starting line, she (5'2", 125 lbs) can take off much faster than I (5'10", 170 lbs) can. I can hope to close the distance by using my strength and stride, but she's got the edge on that first 200 ft. Hey, you know what else is 200 feet? A hockey rink. She beat me to the other end.

So I was writing the AngstyTM part of my fic and Cale's Record is basically going complete bonkers during his fever and he's got all sorts of fun little whump-y symptoms (hallucination, coughing up blood, nosebleeds, throbbing headaches, etc., all that fun stuff) and while writing up symptoms, I remembered my photography class where they talked about Red Eye Effect and the thing about Cale's eyes being reddish-brown and thought. huh. maybe that could be a symptom for Record overuse.
According to google,
We know from the novel that Record functions by using his eyes (no duh but hold on) and eyes work by absorbing light (it's more complicated than that but biology really isn't my subject in this case). Since red eye effect roughly happens because your eyes are absorbing too much light, for example usually because you looked directly at the lens when flash was on, so they need to restrict the amount of light that goes in and reflect the rest, I figured the same could be applies to record. So when Kim Roksoo is overusing record and therefore probably absorbing too much light, a physical sign of his overuse would be shown through his eyes faintly glowing kinda red on the surface.
Someone smarter than me please elaborate or add on, but I just thought it's a very fun headcanon, especially during his team leader years. Because can you imagine Kim Roksoo, in addition to his scary aura, also has red fricking glowing eyes. Can you imagine being some mafia boss guild leader thing and then The Company comes for an inspection and he's looking around your desk and his eyes start glowing fricking red as he questions you. Can you imagine being some random employee, walking down the office because you're stuck doing overtime, and then there's just this guy sitting in the dark in front of a screen on excel or something and he turns around ans his eyes are glowing. Red. at 3 AM.
I imagine because of this he'd get tons of more fun nicknames, but I bet with the Soos and his old team they're like "hey the demon's been summoned again" and someone just comes in and drags Kim Roksoo away from whatever he's doing and forces him to take a nap and shut his eyes. "Kim Roksoo did you stay up late reading fantasy novels again." Kim Roksoo, with glowing red eyes like a demon king pouring hot water into the whole box of coffee beans instead of his mug. "No."
I honestly bet Choi Jungsoo just thinks it's kinda cool. And when he transmigrates as Cale we know he doesn't use Record as often, he started really using it at the directory. So can you imagine Alberu Crossman, Sun of the Roan kingdom, opening a zoom call from resident island-exploder and not only has he unbuttoned his whole shirt his eyes are glowing red.
Alberu: I knew you were the devil but what the hell
Cale, drowning himself in cold water: What are you talking about
And if you're his enemy? Locked up in a little dungeon when young master silver shield strides in, looks at you with the scariest expression imaginable, and his eye start glowing red as he lists every crime you've ever done and hand that vicious 30-year-old looking guy beside him a knife and now you're wondering if you really ended up in hell and the person in front of you is the devil himself incarnated by the gods. Little did you know even the gods are freaked out by this delusional little guy.

I'm going to follow up on the fantasy-horror thoughts to be expanded Transformers, so-
Medical/Biological Horror
I haven't really seen takes about established Cybertronian medical biology and the complications with the "humans into Cybertronians" trope.
Like we see the heavy emphasis on T-cogs across the iterations and how it's deeply connected to independence, identity, and person-hood, so how about an ex-human that lacks a T-cog?
Ironically, T-cogs have a lot of emphasis on that particular organ is similar to human hearts in terms of emotional, cultural, spiritual, and physical capabilities and significance. Similar to how humans are capable of donating hearts to others, Cybertronians can perform an equivalent procedure with T-cogs. (On a related side note, the phenomenon of 'cellular memory' has to be extremely appalling to the mechanical species. Not in the sense of upcycling parts, but in the sense that the organs, frame, and equipment still retain the echos of the last person to the point that it influences the new body.)
Imagine that once human inside a medbay as the medics tutted and sadly inscribe their new medical file about their new monoformer status. What a shame, they said. They could have been an excellent addition to (insert whatever frame kibble visible that correlates to a function), they said. Poor thing! With that kind of extrasensory equipment, they'll be a walking target, they said.
So that monoformer with no kibble or those visible beastformer traits without the means to completely escape... What. A. Shame.
Until a random Cybertronian sees that monoformer casually wheeling around with heelies. It's easy to wave away as a reinvention of training wheels, but then they notice those heelies disappear back into the monoformer's frame. The ex-human still has no T-cog. Sweat breaks out because said ex-human had done the fucking impossible.
They're paying closer attention now. They're seeing little micro-transformations happening. The subtle signs of a frame shifting to accommodate an area or space, the way fingertips would sharpen too easily with a file or with a raw cut as a tip is used to scrape away at something, the seams expanding and contracting, so something is happening, they just can't tell...
While this can overlap with the body/psychological horror aspect, I say we should take it more extreme. There had been takes with dysphoria, particularly with the play between mechanical parts and human organs, the differences in senses, and if 'sticky sexual interfacing' is part of it, then sexual hardware of both sets.
However, what about acceptance? The exploration of feeling truly at home in your own new skin? Even if it's high-tech and something out of a sci-fi film/video game with a platform that's incomprehensible because you don't understand the language it uses, but guess what? You can download a packet to fully comprehend a new language. You may not be fluent or comfortably at ease with speaking, but you can read and understand what's being said. A possibility of delving into human disabilities that translate into something easily curable or nonexistent or have well-established accommodations in a Cybertronian framework. Something like hormonal disorders or gastrointestinal issues due to upset gut biome would be wiped clean. Poor/limited eyesight can be compensated with a visor that can't be easily removed or taken away or the additional sensors that provide environmental data. Cybertron has a form of sign language with chirolinguistics where communication is done "by stimulating the nervecircuits in the fingers, wrist and palm of their conversational partner. It seems to be fairly common to know at least a little hand." TFWiki page And it pairs well with internal comms that double as cell phones or an unique user on platform where a Cybertronian can live chat or text another.
A massive tradeoff for this kind of comfort? You now have a visible soul.
Think about it, your soul can be directly handled, as in someone can physically go mess with your most distilled sense of self.
Humanity had long debated the existence of it via philosophy, spiritually, scientifically as well. The heart is the most recent popular choice, but major historical contenders had been the stomach and the mind as well as arguments of the soul isn't found in one specific organ but rather the bridge between them.
People swear by souls and the afterlife. There are many myths and legends that involve souls. Even the most doubtful had been deeply raised in a cultural framework of the concept via media usage, figurative speech, religious imagery, and depictions in art.
That has to be the most mind-blowing and deeply unsettling reality a former human must accept.
I see the comparisons of sparkeaters to vampires as they both prey on the living, but the more apt description should be the product of Harry Potter with Dementors as those Dark creatures eat souls.
So this touches on another genre-
Supernatural Horror
Human adaptability combined with the Earth transformation myths/magic would deeply terrify modern Cybertronians as those new cybered beings don't fit the established medical reality they function with.
This can easily tie very well with expanding Cybertronian folklore of otherworldly beings of their version of fae, demons, spirits, or yĹkai. Beautiful, terrible beings that mimick Cybertronians too well... unless to look closer: the shadow missing or not matching (can be tied to Unicron), conflicting kibble, EM fields too wild with a chaotic rhythm no one else can match, colors that change to suddenly, a strange wardrobe (made of dead creatures) that ripples and warps without a breeze, an mechanimal with too much intelligence glittering in its optics...
I'm not even fully delving into the rampant chaos of ex-humans having a host of adaptations suited for tolerating far more ranges of environmental stress and disease-resistance due to the rapid evolution by organic life compared to Cybertronian fauna. Remember, humans are animals. Highly intelligent apex predators that specialize in endurance/persistent pursuit with strong social and communal behaviors, and the cleverness to suit the environment from aquatic to deserts to wetlands to forests to grasslands to tundra. Humanity found ways to not just survive but to thrive in those biomes.
This opens a potential storyline where cybered humans become Cybertron's extremophiles, so that can easily translate into those beings capable of manipulating their own selves to a multitude of frames and shapes.
The example above with the human to monoformer was a show in how transformation mechanisms could be different between the species. If T-cogs are an inherently modern Cybertronian biological trait, then cybered!Earth natives should be either throwbacks or have another approach to it.
And that's the more muted fuckery, but what about straight-up transformations that were deemed unthinkable? Where unnatural formations keep twisting upon themselves, collapsing just to rise higher and higher? The sudden appearance of not one or two extra limbs, but dozens, even hundreds without a sequence as they try to compute how the hell they pull all that mass from nowhere? Armor plating, sure and steady, then turning into a substance that swallows everything and anything as a solid becomes a liquid.
The repression technology may or may not even work as it targets the frame's T-cog. What can it do to a mecha that doesn't have one?
Another aspect overlooked is the animal-human relationship in domestication of wild animals or how communities form symbiotic relationships with different kinds of wild fauna. Combined humanity's collective love for highly dangerous creatures... Wouldn't it be absolutely sick as hell if cyber!human got a sparkeater as their companion? It's still a wild 'animal,' not a fully tame one like a domesticated animal, so they're trying to tedtalk on a human's approach to curating a stable relationship with a predatory species while the rest of the Cybertronians are basically dead-white from sheer fright.
Or on the opposite yet equally delightful spectrum of said exhuman caring for orphaned creatures that reminds them of human pets (like a bunny or a mouse), but those 'cute babies' usually cause massive structural damage to city-states and a known mech-killer. Something like a Scraplet (because, let's be real, deep in your heart, you know a person that would try to keep it as a pet and succeed at it), so their tedtalk about behavioral training, 'reasonable precautions,' and emotional/physical fulfillment is filled with scientists who's curiosity (slightly to completely) overtakes any sense of self-preservation.
#transformers#analysis#my thoughts#cybertronian culture#cybertronian biology#humans being humans#cultural misunderstandings#culture clash#cultural differences#maccadam#look if earth is uncrion then it's space Australia#it's equally reasonable to assume cyber!humans are very much Cybertronian fae/orcs/touches on folklore on otherworldly beings#magic#creature#horror#fantasy#im playing with 'Things that should frighten Cybertronians if found in their own faces'#there were dragons that were worshipped and dragons that we hunted and humans that fucked dragons#all im saying if humans found their way to prehistoric Cybertron then they would definitely be found in the Wilds#weirdly enough possible enough to fulfill certain niches to ensure Cybertron didnt go as nuclear as it had. food for thought đ¤

Emotional Support
A/N: Hiii everyone, this is my first kinda work for Warhammer and Iâm very excited. This is just a funny intro I came up with in my head with more to come about each legion. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: none
Are you, citizen of our great Imperium, craving a change in career? Or are you otherwise unemployed and seeking stable employment? Well, we here at Imperium of Man Inc. have just the career for you!
After years and years of research, itâs come to the attention of everyone involved that we humans are communal by nature and crave intimate relationships with other humans and have a great need for those deep fulfilling bonds (platonic, romantic, or otherwise). This also rings true for your local Space Marine Chapter. Therefore, we here at Imperium of Man inc. have a bunch of emotionally stunted Space Marines desiring people with whom they can essentially imprint on and we need the serfs to be able to do their jobsâŚEither way, this gap in the market has prompted us here to roll out the first of many programs designed to keep the Empireâs finest in tip top shape. Weâd like to introduce to you, Imperial citizen, our newest career path - Emotional Support Human!
Thatâs right! Today, you could be one of a select few chosen after a series of tests to be placed with your local space marine chapter to be their Emotional Support Human and help support the Emperorâs Angels in a variety of ways.
Qualifications:
-Passing all Imperial Temperament Tests
-Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, etc)
-Happy, Courteous, Enthusiastic, Attentive and Empathetic
-Meets mobility requirements
-Proficient in the Imperial and High Gothic (High Gothic lessons available after employment)
-Ability to multitask
-Work under pressure and at a fast pace
-Willing to learn and understand complex military terminology and strategies
-Able to cope with sudden changes in elevation and being carried around
-Able to perform deep pressure therapy

Benefits:
-competitive salary
-A clean room to sleep in (may share with other emotional support humans based on legion policy)
-At least three meals a day
-free visits to the legion Apothecary
Being an Emotional Support Human HCs:
- You were basically snatched off the street by Imperial employees with little grace. Letâs be honest here, itâs the Imperium.
- The whole time youâre convinced that theyâre about to turn you into a servitor. Youâre not stupid, youâve heard the stories of people being yanked of the streets and going missing all to end up as servitors
- You just hope they lobotomize you quickly.
- To say youâre confused when they just stick you in a random room and congratulate you on being selected as a potential candidate for their newest program is an understatement and youâre even more confused when they tell you that they are about to administer their new test for you.
- Do you have to take a test to become a servitor now? You thought the only requirement was a mostly functioning brain?
- You comply (not that you have much choice with the two armed guards staring you down) and take the test, a little unnerved the whole time as the proctor administers the test, but oh well.
- Next thing you know, youâve passed and they congratulate you on your new job - a Space Marine Emotional Support Human (SMESH/ESH but smesh is just funnier-)
- Anyway, you have no idea wtf that is, but youâre apparently not becoming a servitor and thatâs about enough to get you to do anything.
- Plus, a free room and three meals a day were apart of the benefits package and they had you at that.
- Youâre moved into another room with about 20 other people, all of you looking equally as confused.
- An Imperial employee gets up in front of you and congratulates you on being the first batch and trial run of the Imperiumâs newest hare brained scheme (your words not theirs) - the Space Marine Emotional Support Human program.
- Your new job? Becoming your local space marine legionâs new in-house therapist/stress toy/state sponsored best friend
- Out of everyone that was tested, 21 people passed, and the lot of you were the 20 selected to be in the program (one person per legion). You think 21 people passing the stupid test is ridiculously low but whatever. (Turns out, being able to tolerate your now line of work takes a pretty optimistic and mentally sturdy person thatâs not all that common)
- Youâre given your new uniform and basically shunted off to your new forever home and to the people the Imperium would love for you to bond withâŚwhat could go wrong?

Hi! It's me again! Let's talk about: Shiho's trauma and how Gosho's portrayal of it comes as a pleasant surprise within Detco's rather abysmal landscape of in-depth representation
Very important disclaimer(s): I am not a licensed professional yet, and I am not diagnosed with any kind of trauma-related disorder. I nonetheless hold this topic dearly and wish to gather in one place at least a few of the things that made me truly appreciate the portrayal of Shiho's trauma in a way others haven't. Lastly, this remains of course a personal opinion first and foremost, so keep that in mind if you decide to dive into it!
P.S. - While I always try to start from canon material, we lack a lot of details re: Shiho's backstory. I will generally attempt to hypothesize what could have transpired in the past considering the repercussions we can observe in Shiho's attitude and behaviors, but my own speculations cannot compare to canon actually filling in those blanks (which I highly doubt we'll ever get in the first place).
P.P.S. - this thing got long. Like. Really long. And because of tumblrâs newfound habit of flagging random things as nsfw, I couldn't add any manga screenshots. Get ready for a wall of text, gamers
The Roots of Shiho's Trauma
Trauma is in itself an incredibly complex topicâ even the mere fact that a set threshold past which events can begin to be considered traumatic doesn't actually exist on the grounds that individuals tend to react differently to the same stimuli (e.g. I once had to watch my father get the shit beaten out of him by a man twice his size to the point he had to go to the hospital, but neither I nor my dad ended up developing any sort of trauma response afterwardsâ I'm no warier of strangers than I'd been prior to what happened, and my father is as polite and non-threatening around really tall strangers as ever. This isn't to say that the event itself didn't have an impact on us, of course, but it didn't significantly affect our day-to-day functioning in distressing ways either. I do however know of people who, after experiencing this type of assault, developed an all-consuming agoraphobiaâ among other trauma-related symptomsâ, for example) renders things all the more nuanced from the get-go.
With that said there is of course a point to be made about the kind of trauma Shiho herself has been subjected to. In her case, the very environment she grew up in was traumatic: from a very young ageâ as soon as her giftedness was identifiedâ, she's been pressured to excel, and while studying in the States, although I imagine she hadn't been strictly beholden to furthering the Organization's goals just yet, there must have been BO members or at least affiliates watching her every move.
Later on, she is constantly required to produce results via researching something we can't even be sure she was truly interested in: being a child prodigy and yet leading the research on the "wonder drug" means she was thrust in yet another environment full of adults that likely didn't much appreciate having to listen to a literal teenager, and on top of that her social life was considerably stunted in favor of the job she'd been assigned. At any and all times she'd been under scrutiny, and her own sister was made into an incentive for her to behave herself and stick to her duties. After Rye was outed as a NOC, the situation could only have degeneratedâ Akemi being most likely compromised meant there was a chance Sherry was as well, which would have translated into stricter regulations and increasingly more controlling behavior from the Organization.
Considering her backstory and how it's presented to us, we also know Shiho didn't have a childhood complete with stable parental figures, and she was separated from her much less useful sister very early on. That too is a kind of instability that deeply affects the developing individual, and if unaddressed it has a high chance of leading to widespread issues later in life.
So, we already have three pretty relevant points to start with: prolonged exposure to stress, perceived (but also very real) threats and instability that spans a decade at the very least. But fear not, for we can add more.
While I think this is somewhat of a point of contention within the fandom, I myself believe that there has been some sort of abuse perpetrated towards Shiho from within the BO's ranks. Her panic reaction extends to any and all members, yes, but Gin (and for some reason Vermouth) gets the biggest externalizations of it (let us never forget that he canonically stars in Shiho's nightmares).
Now, regardless of whether we're going to find out what kind of abuse Shiho went through (psychological, physical, sexual), and considering that we most likely never will, the implications on Gin's part abound in the early manga (and one can even posit that a few specific remarks made by Shiho are a direct consequence of her own experiences, expressed through dry humor and snark as a way of feeling more "in control" of the situation). I understand that Gin is literally "guy who will hunt you down and kill you with a smile", but so are basically all the other BO members, and Shiho only ever reacts so strongly to Gin. To me this means she either directly experienced some form of abuse at his hand, or that she projected well over a decade of stress and fear of the Organization onto Gin, thus turning him into a sort of boogeymanâ a herald of every horrifying thing the BO is capable of.
Lastly, the impact of Akemi's death should also be taken into consideration, above all in relation to the role Shiho is firmly convinced she herself had in it. Considering how attached Shiho was to Akemi, and how her older sister's continued safety had been the biggest incentive for Shiho to have behaved herself especially in the past few years, her execution (delivered by Gin himself, once again cementing him as a big player in Shiho's trauma) definitely "breaks" her for good.
It's worth noting that the way Shiho breaks leads her to rebel against the system that's been suffocating her all along, but doing so is insanely hard and given the lack of a solid support system to fall back on, it doesn't go far: her actions aren't even that explosiveâ she announces that she will no longer work on the APTX until someone tells her the truth behind her sister's deathâ but they nonetheless elicit an extreme reaction from the Organization, thus further confirming its status as a massive threat to Shiho in her mind. Before the BO she is entirely powerless: they decide whether she's useful or not, they decide whether she's worth keeping alive, they decide what she should do, they decide that she's expendable the moment she displays independent wishes.
We have therefore unspecified abuse and grief accentuated by strong feelings of perceived responsibility re: the loss that transpired in addition to our first three big stars in the constellation behind most, if not all, of Shiho's trauma responses.
While frustrating to my perfectionist mind (everything must have a specific cause and if I do not make an effort to clarify or at least imply what it is in my work I perish; it definitely shines through via my poorly restrained desire to compensate for the chunks and details of Shiho's backstory we're missing), the fact that a great deal of what caused Shiho's trauma in the first place is quite nondescript at first glance, almost as if Shiho were trying to convince herself and others that "it's not a big deal" by rarelyâ if everâ bringing it up (and when she does she recounts the events matter-of-factly, as if she were largely unaffected by them), is something I've found myself appreciating more and more as the story progressed. Not because it truly isn't important, but because it can actually be pieced together through Shiho's every action, time and time again. At long last, a character whose trauma doesn't only make itself known when a specific trigger is at play, but rather pervades every single aspect of the survivor's life whether they're conscious of it or not.
Now, one thing I won't be doing is attempting to put a clinical label on what Shiho is experiencing: this is because her position in the manga is quite complex, and seeing as the plot itself isn't centered around her and her trauma, things aren't necessarily clear-cut. For example, Shiho did indeed get out of a stressful and traumatizing environment, but that doesn't mean she's out of danger for good just yetâ if we were to attempt to categorize the symptoms she displays with the goal of making a diagnosis, we just wouldn't be able to do so due to the very much still present stressors and traumatic elements.
Applying a label to Shiho's experiences is also not the point of this post in the first place, and so I decided not to. I wanted to focus on the visible effects of her trauma, and how she's shown to be willing to at least try to break away from the mechanisms and mentality she's developed.
Which is how we get to the next section of this bad boy:
Haibara Ai And Living With Trauma
From the very moment we begin to learn about Sherry's backstory, her words and behaviors indicate a deeply rooted pessimistic outlook on her predicamentâ and quite possibly life itself. The very name she picked for her new identity specifically includes the Japanese character for 'sorrow', as opposed to that of 'love' suggested by Agasa. Even with said choice being played off as Shihoâ now Aiâ intentionally trying to unsettle Conan in every way she can, I can't help but read way too much into it and see a young woman who genuinely sees herself in that Kanji. Pain is all she is. Pain is all the world offers. It's inescapable the way a name is, and she made it into a reminder she's going to hear daily from now on.
It's also interesting how Ai brings up time and time again how Conan is the only one who can understand (and therefore help) her, with specific references to their shared predicament: Conan knows about the Organization, ended up shrunk because of the APTX, and has to constantly hide from them by playing the part of a grade schooler. While a freshly shrunk Shiho's options were insanely limited from the start, she still opted to head for Kudou Shinichi's house because in her mind he was the only person who could ever understand her situation by virtue of sharing the same experience.
As the plot slowly moves forward and we get to see more of Ai interacting with the world around her, multiple other things become very clear: an especially pronounced trait of hers is that she struggles to hold on to positive emotions and trains of thought, most notably very early on in the manga. She always finds a sour note even in the happiest of situations, because her thinking patterns cannot break out of that constant negative spiralâ she is effectively still trapped, at least mentally.
As an additional example of this, even though she's been away from the traumatic environment for months, Ai cannot stop thinking about it (this can technically be countered by the fact that the danger itself isn't entirely gone. Shiho is safe for the time being, but the danger is always lurking somewhere. The problem is that she sees it everywhere instead, and cannot let go of the notion that she's going to get got if she relaxes even for a moment, which is what actually makes this kind of reaction encroach into unhealthy territory).
There's a also very obvious disconnect between her and her peers (both perceivedâ the Detective Boysâ and realâ other teenagers). To Ai, all these people are too naive for this world, and they aren't ready to handle its cruelty. She is quite defeatist in her outlook on life and has difficulties understanding how the people around her can be so optimistic, which in turn makes forming new bonds much harder for everyone involved: by keeping others at arm's length, Ai acts on the fear of having to experience a loss as devastating as her sister's ever againâ here we have the avoidant aspect of her trauma reactions.
Speaking of: she also projects Akemi on Ran multiple times in canon, and always in contexts where danger and death are at the very least in the background. She's just like Akemi in that she decides to protect Shiho by putting her own life on the line. She's just like Akemi and like her she's going to die. Ai's reluctance to even introduce herself to Ran, and especially her shark-dolphin metaphor, is in my opinion pretty indicative of yet another tendency that can be found in trauma survivors, and that is the belief that there is something about yourself that is inherently dirty and shameful (traumatic event(s)), that sets you apart from normal, even good people, and it is a gap that can never be filled because you're now irreversibly damaged.
Dipping our toes into a more clichĂŠ detail re: the portrayal of trauma in media, let's not forget that Ai has nightmares featuring one of the sources of her trauma (and while Gosho kind of actually uses the Gin one as a "prophetic" dream, Conan does canonically comment on the fact that Ai is a night owl/doesn't sleep nearly enough, and we could interpret that as her being unwilling to fall asleep and risk yet more nightmares).
A considerable portion of Reunion With The Black Organization is dedicated to showing us just how much of an effect a single nightmare about Gin has on Ai. She's even more withdrawn than usual, prone to getting lost in her head (possibly even dissociating), receptive to the tiniest details that inevitably rouse her memory of the nightmare to the point she fails to assess the non-existent risk factor of her current situation and has a panicked outburst towards a very confused Ayumi, who did nothing apart from touching Ai's arm. Her emotional dysregulation in these panels shows us a clear see-saw between numbness, then mounting fear up to her breaking point (startle reaction), then an unfiltered externalization of her anguish that is ultimately played off as a joke so as to avoid further scrutiny from the Detective Boys.
We also get to see Ai's reaction to the mere sight of a black Porsche 356A, Gin's favorite car. The interesting part is that said man isn't even around at the timeâ this could be anyone's car. But it's still enough to trigger Ai's freeze response and put her on high alert. Later on, in The Four Porsches, we find out that said car doesn't even need to be a specific color for Ai to start spiraling, which is a pretty good example of how something innocuous and only vaguely analogous to past events can be more than enough to remind a survivor of their trauma.
Even with what little we are given, it's also laughably easy to tell how utterly terrified of "going back" or otherwise re-experiencing the effects of the environment she grew up in Ai is, which naturally includes an abject fear of the people that used to be around her. Ai's "sixth sense", although specifically primed to hone in on Organization operatives, feels to me like a magnified version of the hypervigilance that trauma survivors experience.
Surprisingly enough, as that isn't something I see often in media, we even see her considering (and attempting not once but twice) the ultimate escape as an option: killing herself (or letting herself be killed) would definitely solve all of Ai's problems. It'd free her from the constant fear and misery that characterize her every waking hourâ and undoubtedly her sleep as well. It'd even rid all the wonderful, untainted people she somehow managed to surround herself with of the most dangerous burden they could have ever found themselves dragging around.
This constant devaluation of her person plays such a big part in selling Shiho's trauma, at least to me. It doesn't come off as edgy or disingenuous because it has solid roots in her past, in the things she's done and what she's been through. Sherry's value lied in her brain, her genius: in a way, even Ai's working on an antidote, producing prototype after prototype at a frankly insane rate for a person who's working alone and with fragmented data to start with, can be traced back to the unhealthy notions that have been drilled into her by the Organization. She actively relives her day-to-day life as Sherry after she's gotten out, and it's fine because it's familiar. She knows how this works much better than she knows how to hold a friendly conversation with a peer: she's back under pressure, but at least she's in control. And this way she can prove that she's good, that she's useful, that she's worth keeping around.
Truly, having reached this point, the question comes naturally: can it get better? The answer? Yes. Yes, it can.
The Ups And Downs Of Recovery, Between Healing And Fighting Back
Let's not kid ourselves: recovery is hardly a straight line. There's no magical fix-all cure that entirely erases someone's trauma and associated triggers in the blink of an eye simply because the current situation requires it, or because âit's been long enoughâ and other people just want them to get over it already. Trauma doesn't just âgo awayâ because you really need it to. It doesn't stop affecting you, but there are ways to ensure it no longer takes over every moment of your life.
For Shiho, the first step towards recovery consists in acknowledging that 1) she is not alone anymore, and 2) she may be deathly afraid, but letting herself drown in that fear, only ever running away from it, isn't going to make things better.
Still, âfighting backâ isn't all about acting like Conan. Ai is hardly expected to hunt down the Organization the way Conan does, and she honestly shouldn't be. Her experiences with the BO largely differ from Conan's, and even without taking that into consideration, different people may react very differently to traumatic events.
Ai's abject fear and general unwillingness to confront the Organization face to face (or investigating it in general) aren't a sign of weakness on her part, nor is it necessarily bad writing on Gosho's end. I am actually elated to see how consistent Ai is in her avoidance of those massive triggers. She rightfully wants to know when they're around, wants updates on their movements, but she loathes the idea of actively interacting or facing off against them even after Sherry's supposed death on the Mystery Train. Everything about the BO is bad news and bearer of bad memories, and she wants those reminders as far away from her as possibleâ which is an absolutely valid position for her to maintain.
However, in the eventuality that Ai decides to start facing her fears in a healthy, constructive way rather than as a way to get herself killed (which is in fact what eventually happens in canon), starting small is keyâ and it's to my delight that Gosho made a point of having Ai do just that. It takes her so, so long, but she decides to stop running because she's reached the conclusion that even if she does, she's never going to be truly safe and free (which is, coincidentally, what happens if trauma goes unaddressed); by refusing to go into Witness Protection, she acknowledges her fears but also the fact that she's not alone in facing them, and that she can't ever expect to find peace if she doesn't start doing just that.
Later on, during Black Impact, we see Ai being proactive and helping out in a small way by providing Jodie with the number she needs to call. Albeit tiny, the action doesn't go unnoticed by Conan, who comments on how unlike Ai that was, nor by Jodie, who shoots her a thumbs up. And here's the thing: of all people, Jodie is maybe the one who actually comes the closest to understanding at least some of Shiho's feelings, especially in regards to the abject isolation of having your family ripped away from you all at once (only to immediately find yourself in danger in return) and consequently the Witness Protection Program.
I'm definitely more than a little biased when I say I'm sad that Gosho didn't explore their parallels further, especially when Jodie herself canonically acknowledges their similarities as well as what sets them apart: unlike her, Ai refused to go into Witness Protection, because she's already found more than enough reasons to keep her in one place, and those reasonsâ those peopleâ give her courage. It's pretty simplified, of course, because this isn't what the manga itself is about, but it is nonetheless a heartwarming moment that showcases how building meaningful relationships anew can literally be life-changing in the face of trauma. Regardless, I immensely appreciate the fact that these scenes exist at all.
Now, is this all there is to Aiâs path to recovery? Of course not. The Organization itself isn't the only thing weighing her down, after all: her grief and feelings of responsibility regarding Akemi's death play a big part in her day-to-day problems as well. To put one of my earlier observations about the visible consequences of Shiho's trauma to good use, let's jump back to The Mystery In The Net, where we see Ran initially remark on how Ai refuses to even look at her when they're near each other; at the tail end of the case, seemingly out of nowhere, Ai surprises the other girl by willingly introducing herself and offering a handshake. It's genuinely touching to see, most notably because we as readers are privy to information Ran doesn't haveâ she doesn't know how Ai sees her, nor how the little girl sees herself. She has no idea that what makes her a lovely person to interact with is exactly what's causing Ai to keep her distance, but we do, and Ai managing to put aside her fear and shame in order to reach out to someone like Ran is definitely a massive step forward as far as her interpersonal relationships go.
Along with all this progress, however, come many relapsesâ usually due to a close encounter with a member of the Organization. In these cases, but most importantly in their aftermath, we're shown just how debilitating Ai's trauma responses are. After The Mysterious Passenger, wherein Ai âonlyâ spent her time in freeze mode because of how close she was to an Organization operative and then proceeded to try to stay behind on a bus that was about to explode because she'd convinced herself that only by dying could she do the right thing, we're plunged into a relatively low-stakes case where a small dog disappears. More than anything else, it's Ai's attitude, her words, and the things we find out through the Detective Boys and Agasa that paint the true haunting picture of the day. Ai has retreated into herself, unable to escape the vicious cycle of her negative mindset, and it's a wonder Agasa even managed to get her to step foot outsideâ all of this from a girl who was teasing the old inventor for catching a cold right before having to go skiing just a few days ago, seemingly completely at ease in her skin and with the world around her.
I'm not going to lie: this is the kind of up and down that only brings me closer to Ai. It is frustrating to see it happen, and that's good! That's exactly right! Because imagine if, instead of just witnessing it, you were the person this is happening to: opening up the tiniest bit, daring to stick your head outside because you think that maybe, just maybe, today is going to be a nice day, only to be sent spiraling right back into fight/flight/freeze mode and having to start the process of loosening up all over again. Rinse and repeat. It's infuriating. It's maddening. It's despair-inducing. Will it ever end?
That's what I love about Shiho, Sherry, Ai. This feels so real in a way I don't see often, and it's the reason why, despite all my gripes with Gosho's writing (particularly that of these last few years), I actually think he's done a pretty damn good job with Ai. Yes, even now that she's âso annoyingâ. Even now that she snaps and snarks and externalizes her emotions in a way that clearly doesn't appeal to everyone. Because that, too, can be what it looks like when someone starts taking their life back piece by piece: their personality, if carefully repressed in the past, begins to unfurl. And it's not always one-hundred percent pleasant, but honestly? I wouldn't expect it to be, especially not from someone like Shiho, and especially considering that yes, she's beginning to heal, but it's not a monitored process. She isn't actively being helped nor taught about ways to manage her trauma, and it's amazing that she's made so much progress on her own. It's amazing that she wants to live now (most days).
And it's going to get better. It's going to get better, and she's going to be there for it.
#Hhhhhi. I am. Normal about this :)#I definitely didn't include everything I wanted to. The evolution of Ai's attitude towards Okiya didn't make it in for example#Or how Ai constantly attempting to sacrifice herself post-Reunion With The BO could be seen as reenactment of her trauma re: almost dying#But man. MAN. Does it feel good to put my thoughts in order. Now I have them in a neat little gdoc for when I want to cry abt Shiho /silly#Anyway!!!! If any of yall decide to read this: whoops (there were supposed to be manga panels but tumblr flagged those as nsfw?? Rip) hehe#iiii love Shiho. I love Ai. I loveeee herrrrr :3:3:3:3:3:3:3:333#dcmk#detco#detective conan#yapping time#miyano shiho#haibara ai#character analysis

OK I've talked here, I think, about my strong belief that we need a Miss Climpson's Cattery TV show to jump on the mystery period drama bandwagon- and I've been thinking about what it might look like and have some ideas
Please feel free to add some in comments or reblogs!
The overall cast structure is basically like Call the Midwife S1 (or, more accurately, S2-3)- we have a POV "new to the crew" character who is purportedly the main character (but significantly lower-drama than Jenny lol) but it's functionally an ensemble. Miss Climpson is the Sister Julienne character, aka the on-the-ground boss, and then there are a bunch of other operatives, who all show up at SOME point in most episodes but only a few of them take center stage each episode in a particular case or two. There are also the support staff/actual typists, who are fun side characters.
Wimsey is a side character, and is played by a non-super-famous actor. He only appears in a few episodes at most in each season, usually as someone who is giving work to the operatives. While he can bring in operatives to help him on his cases, he is never allowed to solve any agency cases.
Harriet is a one or two episode max character. She meets Miss Climpson and possibly Miss Murchison but nobody else (as discussed in Gaudy Night). Honestly, if they don't show her that's fine too. At most she's brought in to provide help/insight on a literary world case.
The show starts right after the events of Strong Poison, and it's discussed as a recent case among the team. That said, unless it can be fit canonically into a Sayers story without undue bother, the episodes do NOT circle around existing Sayers plots.
Miss Murchison is a significant character, and has a love interest to whom she gets married sometime toward the third/fourth year of show canon (as we know that canonically she gets married sometime before the events of Gaudy Night). It is a cute older-nerd romance and everyone ships it. There is no "drama," just sweetness.
This is optional, but it is POSSIBLE that Wimsey brings Miss Meteyard into the firm, likely not permanently but possibly on a one-case basis for her advertising world expertise. She is initially snobbish about it but soon grows out of it.
As I've alluded to above, the main rule is- Sayers canon can never be violated. There is SO much space for great story and characterization that falls totally in line.
Everything else... is totally up to whoever! And I'm absolutely up for other ideas! These are just the main things I've thought of and I may come back and make additions/edits but here we go for now.
Though... casting idea- I'm not usually very good at this but I really feel like, speaking of Call the Midwife, Georgie Glen (Miss Higgins) could be an interesting Miss Climpson. Quite different than the excellent one in the Petherbridge/Walter adaptation of Strong Poison, but still good. I'm completely open to other suggestions though, as well as casting suggestions for other characters (including just actors who you think would be good for random currently-nonexistent/hypothesized ones- it's just so open ended, there are so many choices!).

Dead Boy Detectives Fic Recs Part 6
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Sorry its been a while, last month was crazy! Not too crazy for my emotional support fandom, though! You guys are giving me life. So please have another fic rec list. :)
We two boys together clinging by Aliquis
Charles and Edwin explore their romantic and sexual hangups and also help Crystal search for Niko. This fic has everything: excellent writing, developing relationship, rituals, first time, Beltane, a hot priest. This is already a fandom classic and now I've finally read it, I can confirm it's very good! Read the rest of the series too!
The stranger the better by ghostinthelibrary
Everyone's alive and basically the supernatural version of the Men in Black. I love the whole series, but this installment has the boys' first meeting, Edwin insisting he doesn't need a new partner, office gossip and an intriguing case. The prequel also has palasaki and background catwin! Anyway, I'm obsessed with this AU.
Partridge in a Pear Tree by Vamillepudding
Cinderella AU! Charles is basically a Disney Princess and Edwin is Secretly The Prince, it's wonderful. I also loved the worldbuilding and nods to old school Cinderella lore, like the gift-giving tree. So charming, highly recommended.
Wunderkammer by dear_monday, two_ravens
Edwin and Charles (and later Crystal) are functionally immortal and running a magical museum. This fic has a fantastic sense of place (the Athenaeum is a character in its own right) and an intriguingly gothic horror vibe with its sentient exhibits, doors into other planes and unnerving nonchalance about disappearing staff and guests. I would probably die, but I would absolutely go there.
pinch me (I don't want this to be a dream) by shadowquill17
The pince-nez fic! Charles finds a pair of glasses that show him a person's desires. Then he looks at Edwin. It goes about as well as you'd expect. It was inspired by this wonderful comic by technically-human so check that out too!
Let Me Follow by LikeMmmCookies
Time loop fic! The boys get trapped in Crystal's mind, replaying the day of Charles' death. Only Edwin is the New Boy in school and he's alive... Fantastic concept, so intriguing. Plus Crystal being a badass, The Sandman crossovers and Niko!
Oaths of the Forsworn by e_va
Vampire AU! The boys meet while Charles is dying so Vampire!Edwin agrees to turn him. The story is ongoing, but so far it's been focusing on Charles coping with being a fledgling vampire. Compelling.
lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate by KiaraSayre
Edwin is in Hell. Or is he? Fabulous writing, Hell worldbuilding and gut-wrenching detail. Cw for body horror and torture.
'Cause You Cut Through All the Noise by DontOffendTheBees
Edwin doms Charles in a therapeutic and non-sexual way. That's it and it's great. I loved this for its exploration of intimacy, trust and kink.
Instructions on Being by thewritingotter
Everyone is Alive Modern AU based on an AITA post featuring Charles convincing himself he's homophobic when he realizes he hates Edwin dating other men. It sounds like a funny premise, but really brings the angst and poignancy.
in an alternate timeline's light by plentyghost
Charles finds comics!Edwin hiding in the office. Sweet.
Become So Numb by snowkatze
AU where the Night Nurse doesn't help Charles and Edwin spends another 50 years in Hell. Loved Edwin's mechanism for escape, kind-of-dark Charles and the angsty reunion.
unidentified affectionate object by lyres
Edwin is struck by a curse that manifests his feelings as random objects. Good thing Charles isn't also effected... Very cute with mild angst and a happy ending.
between you and me, suddenly something is on my mind by lolotr
Beach episode! A proper one. Just fun, friendship and emotional support. Plus Edwin in an Edwardian swimming costume, complete with a handy visual aid.
Other Types of Intimacy by Asidian
After a tough case, Edwin takes care of Orb!Charles. (Chorb? Is this chorbwin?) I guess I have a thing for non-sexual intimacy. Seriously, though, what could be more beautiful than someone cuddling your soul?
(black is the colour) of my true love's hair by ObsessedWithFandom
Charles has long hair: the fic. Interesting ghost lore with Charles' hair kind of working like his mood-ring polo and growing when he's happy. And this is an established relationship payneland fic, so lately he's been very happy. đ Honestly, as a child of the 80s, Charles deserves to have long hair. I need more fanart!

Ep 8
[School Bell Ringing]
Ms. Baalman: Alright class, today we're going to dive into quadratic equations. Can anyone remind me what the standard form of a quadratic equation is?
[chatter]
Ms. Baalman: Yes, that's right, we'll start by reviewing how to solve these using factoring. Remember, factoring is just one of several methods we can use.
[Lizzie is awful at math]
[door opens Caleb walks in nonchalant]
Ms. Baalman: Excuse me Mr. Idol, school isn't your personal playground, you can't just waltz in fifteen minutes late.
Lizzie: [whispering] oh god, why is he in this class?!
Caleb: It won't happen again, I'm sorry
Ms. Baalman: I sincerely hope so, for the sake of your grade
Ms. Baalman: Anyways class, half of your grade for this class will go towards your final project, which will be designing and analyzing a theme park ride.
Lizzie: [whispering] Oh, that sounds interesting
Ms. Baalman: This will be a joint effort, you will be partnering up with another student and apply mathematical concepts such as functions, geometry, and statistics to design and analyze a hypothetical theme park ride.
[another student?]
Random student: Excuse me Ms. Baalman, how will we know who our project partner is?
Ms. Baalman: Excellent question, to make this simple your partners will be the student behind you.
Lizzie: BEHIND US?
Creator note: My favorite trope you ask? Well, forced proximity ofcourse. [cackling] Short chapter but next one will be up tomorrow!

PSDs For Dummies <3
â as written by a dummy
hello dear readers and welcome back to canarysage, the worldâs least comprehensive tutorial blog. today, weâre back at it again with photopea for dummies, and weâre tackling something i probably should have done first: psds.
example psds are: 1 (@cutesiplushi) 2 (@didlivio) & 3 (@lumieron)
what is a psd?
excellent question, dear reader! psd stands for photoshop document, and itâs a type of file format (like .png or .gif) that allows you to store a projectâs individual layers! itâs a file format that, for obvious reasons, is exclusive to photoshop and photopea.
in editing circles, psd has become shorthand for filter. people use psds to save configurations of adjustment layers that are then used to filter images consistently, without having to remake them every time. when someone posts a psd, theyâre posting a folder (hopefully itâs in a folder) with their specific set of adjustment layers for anyone to use!
where can i get psds?
right here on tumblr! check your favorite edit blogs, as they may have posted some, or search âfree psdâ or âpsd coloringâ in the search function. tumblr doesnât allow you to upload psds directly, so youâll be redirected to a site outside tumblr. probably either deviantart, google drive, or ko-fi, all of which are easy to use. deviantart requires you to have an account to download anything (luckily, an account is free!) and ko-fi may require you to pay money. google drive doesnât have a search function in and of itself, but itâs extremely easy to download off of.
also, shameless self plug, but i post psds right here on canarysage! i personally use deviantart, but again, an account is free. if send me an ask, i may be able to provide you with a google drive link, if you ask really nicely (・â˘Ěá´-)â§
and of course if you donât want to use someone elseâs psd, you can always make your own.
how do i use a psd?
once you have a psd of your choice downloaded, open up photopea! or photoshop, if youâre rich like that.
once you open photopea, click this here button right in the middle of the screen, the one that says âopen from computerâ

from there, go to choose files and open up your psd! depending on from whom you got it, psds will look different once you open them. iâm using one of my own as an example.

you can see thereâs two layers in my psd, a folder, and an image. the image is just for me so i know which psd this is once i save itâi like to save all my psds with images of real people so i know how it looks on moodboards or stimboards.
the folder is the important part here, thatâs where the adjustment layers are contained. to transfer a psd, you can either go to file > new

which lets you start an entirely new project, or you can open an image using file > open

which will give you the image you selected.
as an aside, if youâre opening a psd and you already have a project in progress, make sure to click file > open and not file > open & place, as open & place wonât give you the adjustment layers.
then to move the folder, go to layer > duplicate layer into while having selected the folder (just tap on it, that will make it a lighter gray to show itâs selected) and duplicate the folder into whatever your image is

iâm moving mine to a random image of honami i found which is why itâs named like that. once the folderâs duplicated into your project, go over and take a look!

you should now see something like this! ensure that the folder is on top, as otherwise the adjustment layers wonât work.
hereâs the difference between the unfiltered image and the image with my psd!
to save images in photopea (like i did just now) go to file > export as > (your preferred file format)

which will pull up something like this

i recommend either saving as a png (for still images) or as a gif (for⌠gifs) but thatâs up to you! in order to save a psd, go to file > save as psd! that will save your project to your device

bear in mind that tumblr doesnât accept psds as a file format, so if youâre going to post an edit, you have to save it as something else. also, donât just save other peopleâs psds and claim them as your ownâpsds take a lot of time, effort, and skill, like any other art form.
can i make my own psds?
100% yes! i canât give you a step-by-step process unfortunately, as there really is no one way to make psds. i recommend familiarizing yourself with adjustment layer and seeing what works.
shameless self plug again, but you can check out my other posts in this series to find out about some of the adjustment layers!
basically, i like to think of adjustment layers as a few different categories. light/darkness adjustments (ie: brightness/contrast, levels, curves, exposure, black & white, and threshold to a certain extent.) saturation adjustments (vibrance, hue/saturation.) color adjustments (hue/saturation, color balance, photo filter, channel mixer, selective color, gradient map depending on how you use it, and replace color.) and also, miscellaneous (posterize, which gives your images a pop-art crunchy kind of effect, invert, which⌠inverts your colors, and color lookup, which is a set of filters unto itself)
how you utilize adjustment layers is up to you! i personally like to use a variety and see what happens, my personal favorites being channel mixer, photo filter, and hue/saturation. you can also utilize blending modes (shameless self plug again,) or opacity.
if you have no idea where to start, you can look at other peopleâs psds to see their process. donât copy or steal, for obvious reasons, but you can toggle layers on and off and see what happens and what each layer does.
making psds isnât as intimidating as it sounds, you just have to start a project and start creating! it gets really fun once you get the hang of it (*'â˝'*)
i donât edit with photoshop or photopea, can i still use psds?
short answer: nope!
long answer: if you want use psds but youâre super used to ibis paint or whatever you currently use, have no fear! you donât have to switch all your editing to photopea. you can make your main project in ibis or whatever as normal, then upload it to photopea and add a psd.
you can also make perfectly fine filters in ibis paint in your own right, with enough tweaking. thereâs also apps such as polarr and picsart which come with filters, but iâve never used them so iâm unable to vouch for how they work.
do i need to use psds when editing?
nope! psds are 100% optional. theyâre a style like anything elseâsome people prefer them and some people donât. itâs up to you.
did you genuinely write 1178 words answering questions no one asked?
yep.
what if i have a question you didnât answer?
feel free to shoot me an ask! i donât mind explaining further, and i promise i donât bite. as with anything, this is just meant to explain to anyone who needs assistanceâphotopea for dummies by a dummy, after all. we can be confused together!
are you done now?
i am! congratulations for reading this far!
yours truly, canarysage
