they are younger in those drawings (11-12). splinter had them wearing short mask tails till they proved they had skills to the point that longer mask tails wouldn't be a liability for them (getting grabbed etc). when they proved themselves, he let them customize their masks however they wanted

Any thoughts/opinions on TMNT 2007, either in comparison to other iterations or about the characters/relationships in general?

oh boy have i got some thoughts on TMNT 2007 !

straight off the bat i’d say it feels so set apart from all of the other ninja turtles movies we had/have at that point. they’re a little older (i can’t remember the canon ages but wasn’t it pretty much fanon for a long time that they were at least early 20s?) and starts their story off kinda at their end.

2007 was also supposedly a continuation of the 1990s movies. whether you want that to be solid canon or not (personally i don’t) but either way, they’re kind of in “retirement” stage of their lives with everything with shredder already happened and this is kind of just the aftermath of that.

the relationships in this movie !!!!! oh my GOD it’s just near to absolute perfection. i usually don’t always super love the classic raph/leo tension just because sometimes it feels a little overdone and can really take away the shine from other aspects of the movie, but i really do like how different it feels here.

raph is so obviously not coping with having so much of his family dynamics changed. and i think that’s why the whole aspect of the movie being set after all of their biggest most heroic adventures works well, because in a way, this movie just highlights how much their lifestyle has impacted them. imo raph struggles with having leo so far from home. he’s going through a little bit of separation anxiety, can’t regulate his emotions properly and lashes out bad.

leo obviously takes this all the wrong ways. he’s going through something too so he’s blind-sighted to the fact that raph isn’t intentionally trying to piss him off. they’re back butting heads maybe because it feels most familiar in a way that hasn’t been since leo left.

b-team in this movie is just. chefs kiss. so much to unpack here, too.

donnie who is finally being highlighted for how much he does for his family behind the scenes, normally quietly bumbling along, now here he is, trying to keep a sense of normality and feeling under appreciated!! which rightly so!! he kind of just gets this shit load of responsibility thrusted onto him when leo leaves and raph distances himself. he’s treading water in the deep end, barely afloat but rarely does he really lash out because he wants to do good, and keep peace (mostly for mikey’s sake, I would argue)

and mikey. oh mikey. easily one of my favourite interpretations of mikey in this movie. he’s kind of mellowing out and maturing in a way that i think hits leo with full force when he comes home from south america. all because he’s had to grow up and pick up the pieces left behind in the wake of their family kind of slowly crumbling apart.

they’re all hurting in this movie but mikey’s hurt is so painfully obvious and so masked when he’s putting up with a job he really hates, barely seeing much of either brother he has left because of their schedules and feels cooped up. he trips over himself with just pure glee when he sees that leo is finally home. he’s still that kid at heart, despite everything, that truly believes that his big brother can mend this. it’s a really bittersweet thing to think of him just hoping his life would fall back into place again after it being so out of sorts for so long.

TMNT 2007 isn’t a perfect movie by any means. whilst i adore the way the turtles have been written, is still falls into the trap of making don + mike background characters towards the last half, giving leo + raph the limelight once again, and sometimes leo does act a little out of sorts but i could just pin that down to him having some sort of PTSD, so it remains high in my ranks regardless.

it’s not perfect but it’s still really really good. the animation holds up pretty well. it paved the way for 2012 in regards to CGI turtles. the voice acting is something i don’t see hyped up enough. nolan north as raphael?!!! i feel like as a fandom we definitely sleep on that fact way too hard

the plot is original and fresh and it’s clear that this wasn’t just a cash grab, but a real love letter to the franchise and to the fans:) the people that made this cared for these characters and this world and it shows :)

the fight scenes are really fun and easy to follow. the leo raph rooftop scene is just incredibly done. whoever wrote that.. please always be involved in tmnt wherever you are.. honestly pure fire some of those lines

nobody feels like a caricature of themselves here, which often happens with tmnt when a new universe is introduced, just to establish their character roles. i really love the thought of them in the wake of the fight and after the dust settles and they’re trying to cope with their feelings and problems separately because they don’t know what else to do. they need a million hugs, please, i would love to see more of this that isn’t just the last ronin. show me the turtles in their 30s trying to adjust to their lives changing drastically as they’re getting older and recognising their trauma, finally. i would eat that up!

in anyone hasn’t seen TMNT 2007 (which, i’d assume most of my followers probably has) then i would absolutely recommend it !!

forever mourning the mikey centric sequel we were supposed to get before the studio shut down and forever sending wishes up that there’s someone out there with enough money and a dream to bring it to life in some way shape or form (i’ll take a comic. a mini series. anything lmao)

same anon!! i feel validated so yes to everything you said. it was “Taking Care of your Brothers: A Two-part guide by Mikey and Donnie” by Calliopes_Anon that really made me change my perspective on how these two might act, particularly the mikey chapter simply because we get to see him look out for donnie as much as don looks out for him

and i think the fact there even was a mikey pov, much less one as thoughtful and detailed as that one is, helped a lot. because like. i can’t think of another fic envisioning this pre-movie state with a mike that isn’t constantly scared. kinda eye-opening for me lol

and yeah i do like the sorta ‘i don’t know if it can be fixed’ vs ‘i don’t know how it can be fixed’ mindsets from them and gosh i wish they didn’t take such a backseat during the movie bc i would’ve loved to see them have more of a reaction to the other two than just mild concern. i’d like to explore a version of the movie where they are frustrated, dare i say resentful, with their older brothers because ‘yeah raph can argue how much leo’s new attitude and its consequences are affecting the team. but does raph even understand that extent?’ it’d prob be a whole movie rewrite due to the fact it’s so raph and leo heavy, but isn’t that the beauty of fanfic

oh and yes to your point about donnie’s neurodivergence bc as sweet as it is to see him in fics gifting mikey his own noise blocking headphones, mikey would probably yell at them to shut up for five seconds before putting dons on his head for him

yeah with the neurodivergence thing i do genuinely feel like it would go the other way around cause like ,,, donnie is SO jumpy in canon. unexpected loud noise will even make him fall over sometimes, which means he's particularly sound-sensitive. and as a person with a trait exactly like that, i cannot handle shouting. at all. even when i expect it, it completely throws me off my game and scares the shit out of me. like i usually write it so donnie already struggles to handle getting yelled at, but i could see being in the proximity of it freaking him out too.

i do think that'd be one of those things that would piss off mikey in particular because as much as they make fun of each other and get fed up with each other, it's such an obvious and easy boundary to respect in his eyes. mikey can definitely handle yelling, even if it upsets him to see them arguing, but he would hate it because donnie very much cannot. he'd probably at least snap at them to stop or go do it elsewhere lmao

and resentment towards something like this kind of depends on just how bad raph and leo's dynamic actually was, because while its pretty heavily implied they've been arguing like this kind of continuously (especially based on their talk before they go on that mission that has them lose the key), raph's "i have to look out for you or you could all end up dead" talk feels like something that's ,,, new? considering how leo reacts to it initially before pretending to brush it off. maybe leo just normally derails the conversation faster, or normally they dont have arguments like this in private lmao

definitely what fic's for ,,,, raph and leo kind of going back to the dynamic they had in bug busters (but reversed, and likely more intense) while donnie and mikey kind of pair off together is a really interesting thing to play around with, especially with how they naturally they just go and stick close to each other in the movie (easy way to connect that to them gravitating towards each other with everything going on), ive just never really seen it in the exact Flavor that id want to see so maybe ill check out the fic you recc'd ,,, gotta expand my tastes fr

I honestly really like the Rise ages! It’s different from the norm, and makes for an interesting dynamic — specifically for Raph and Leo, who have always been my favorites lmaooo. (〜￣▽￣)〜

And I prefer Leo as the younger twin, for sure. I just like how that would play into their team and family, with Donnie and Raph being the most protective and Mikey and Leo the most chaotic/flamboyant. And it makes for a cute Tide Pod duo… I like the idea of Mikey looking up to Leo as his immediate older brother. He gets to be more carefree than the others, but still has the Older Brother protective flare for Mikes.

Plus, the shift of Leo to leader would be more dramatic. Raph and Donnie now have to try and listen to their younger brother, who until then, hasn’t had a responsibility so important before!

One thing that really peaked my interest in brotherhood is the shit that mikey and leo went though together. I love leo's and mikey's dynamic and sibling relationship with even though they are on different ends on the personality spectrum, they are such a solid duo and bring out a lot of interesting things in each other. Does it have do with what happened to Tang Shen? Leo and Mikey always gave mama's boys vibes, but I can see leo going after Splinter's approval as a way to smooth that lost, while there was never really anything to curve that lost for mikey.

I do love the opposite duos that never get much time together: Mike and Leo, and Raph and Donnie. Alas, I am not going to go into Leo and Mike's trauma bonding moments as it's a bit of a spoiler. Though I hope to get some Brotherhood stuff out this month if all goes as planned. I've been waffling too much lately about how I want to post this story. And I'm ultimately afraid that whatever I choose is too much work for one person to do. But I need to just put my big girl pants on and do it. And if all else fails, I can always fall back into a novelized version, I guess. Thank you so much for asking about Brotherhood. That always makes my day. And yes, Leo and Mike were def mama's boys. Leo was the worst of them. And he's still a big snuggle bunny and will fall asleep on any of his brothers. They don't always appreciate it.

I have some fun facts for Terra fans:

- Her puppy dog eyes may fool you…but she’s a bit of a rebel too. Classic “overprotective parent” and “curious kid who just wants to be a part of things” dynamic. While transferred to her smaller shell, she’ll sometimes stow away into April’s backpack, Leo’s hip pouch, etc. to get included on missions…though as long as Don isn’t around, Uncle Leo and Auntie April usually keep her secret…Uncle Raph and Uncle Mike are another story lol. They’re snitches.

- Her favorite movie is Finding Nemo. She really wants to go to the ocean someday (dw she’s waterproof).

- She helps Don in his garden all the time. She chases out all the pesky bugs that will cause damage to his plants. Lavender is her favorite and Donnie planted a whole patch for her to lay in.

- She’s got the same abilities that Donnie’s goggles have installed in her eyes. When she uses it, her eyes turn blue and red like his goggles.

- After one of her later software updates, Donnie notices she started making this high pitched whirring sound when she goes into sleep mode while charging. He frets and runs a million tests, scared that she’s over heating or buffering……..only to learn she’s just snoring.

- Don’t tell her dad….but she likes Mikey’s music taste better than his.

- She loves scritches just like Shelldon did. She may not be able to feel it in the same way but it’s all about being cuddled and pampered that she loves<3<3<3

I hc that they are all in their own ways (how can they not be, not like the world is their oyster)...

Leo is more reserved about it which is why he needs Raph to push and call him out. But a little suggestion goes a long way and he's all about testing his limits. Broken beds can always be fixed later...

Raph likes the challenge but only on his terms, once Leo makes suggestions he gets a bit weary. Broken walls just gives him an excuse to brag while asking for "help" to fix stuff. But he doesn't even want to think about what the other two get into...

Don is matter-of-fact and enjoys experimenting. He knows way too much thanks to his brain but fortunately he has a willing ass--istant to partner with. Most anything can be done with enough safety protocols...

Mike is game for most anything at least once and likes to put a creative spin on things thanks to his brain being a bit too imaginative at times. After all, he's the baby brother so no one is gonna let him get hurt-- too much anyway. Donnie can always fix him up!

I dint get it man why are people still uptight about 12 and 03 sibling dynamics vs 18? People act like Mikey is this uwu baby and he isn’t

Oh, I am team “Mikey is chaotic neutral at best”. That boy is ultimate little brother- master of pushing all the buttons while being paired with a lethal baby face.

While I will defend Raph because Mike definitely pokes the bear, he is responsible for himself and his own actions. That being said, in most series I do feel their relationships shifts into something softer over time. Especially 12 Raph and Mikey (I also think their Splinter’s parent style does NOT help in the least bit and I love the shift even more. But that is a post for another time). And it is a beautiful thing.

But honestly- I suspect why people tend to come down on Raph hard might just be a kinship with Mikey thing, and while it is not my cup of tea I am not going to give people grief about it either. I will throw in my perspective when it feels appropriate to do so, but otherwise you do you boo.

Can we talk about nicknames in ROTTMNT? Cause one thing I noticed is how the turtle brothers have not just one but multiple nicknames for each other, and all variations of their names.

Leonardo: Leo, Leon, Nardo

Donatello: Don, Donnie, Donald

Michelangelo: Mikey, Mike, Michel, Angelo

Raphael: Raph, Raphala, Raphie

Nicknames are nothing new in the turtle verse, but I think this series probably has the most variation, which I don't know, feels more organic?

I just really like how the brothers have bunch of different nicknames for each other, especially compared to previous versions. It really adds to the sibling dynamics and it's fun!

ugh i was thinking abt karai all of last night and it made me Angry. the missed opportunities of karai in 2012 are TRAGIC. she wouldve been such a good older sister living with the turtles and splinter like can you IMAGINE the antics. karai purposefully pissing off raph and they get into sibling slap fights. she indulges mikey on whatever he wants bc hes the youngest and won her heart immediately. she makes fun of donnie for being a nerd but also consistently brings him snacks and makes him go to bed when hes been in his lab for a while. her and splinter talking about their traumas and healing as father and daughter. AUUUGGHG ciro when i catch you. ciro you mf

oh absolutely!! it's so sad that such a big chunk of the entire tmnt plot was karai's backstory and getting her back to her family, and once that was all achieved she kinda just.. faded into the background like a cousin that occasionally showed up every now and then for big showdowns.

ESPECIALLY since she was splinter's long lost daughter. the daughter he'd told his sons about countless times, the one where he'd mention her, get all sad and go 'but no worries i have you boys now:)' like ??? that could have made for some AMAZING storylines. a little bit of jealousy for angst? splinter's guilt?! them trying to relearn their entire family dynamic.. and they chose to go with 'yeah the whole leo and karai thing was weird. that's still going strong btw just a heads up'

we really were robbed of her interactions with the turtles one to one. i'll say this: the turtles relationships with each other? great, fantastic, love to see it. but outside of their brothers.. yeesh. they don't mix well in terms of how they're written. and a lot of characters suffer for it. i can't think off the top of my head a single time karai interacts with, say, mikey, alone. just even in the background. like yeah they pair her and leo off together a lot and raph chews her out a few times but she really deserved to actually hang out with her little brothers a lot more and that's sad :(

i would have really have loved to see everything you mentioned! i think (and correct me if im wrong) but mikey is like the only one who outright calls her their sister. i would have loved to have seen an entire episode where the rest of the brothers kinda come to terms with that, leo ESPECIALLY! he's a daddy's boy at heart and now his dad's first child is back and he maybe feels a bit put out. maybe don raph and mike already feel like they never got enough attention have to try and cope with the fact that they feel even more pushed out, even if not on purpose.

and then on top of that, the guilt karai feels, torn between feeling glad she has her real father back, and sad because she doesn't know this man like the others quite do and she knows she's taking up his time and attention... :( there was so much they could have done! and yet!! and yet!!!!!!!

Their moments together were honestly my favorites, I love that they got their own cute little sibling dynamic

Raph giving El a mask to wear as a blindfold at the beginning and telling her she had to give it back because she hadn’t earned it, and then him giving her the same mask for the last fight telling her she had earned it THEY ARE BROTHER AND SISTER

Just… so much raph content i loved it (he was probably the turtle featured the most and anyone who knows me knows that i am NOT complaining about getting fed content about my favorite guy)

In conclusion i need so many more editions of this crossover, give me Stobin meeting the turtles + April and Casey, give me Vecna teaming up with Shredder and a reunion with the turtles + the Party, Hopper and Splinter meeting, i just need so much more of this because it was so well done

I will admit my view of 2012 Raph has softened a little, I definitely wish he was written to be nicer to Mikey in particular but when he has a nice moment with any of his siblings or father I can't help but smile

That being said I won't lie 03 Raph blows 2012 Raph out of the water because I feel his hot headed moments are much better handled. I like Raph more when he's written as a sarcastic smart-ass more than a well meaning bully, and 03 Raph is more a protective brother figure than 12 Raph (Not to say 12 Raph is never protective but it's more clear in 03 Raph imo)

That, and when 03 Raph does something bad because of his anger the others actually call him out on it, like when Raph was about to seriously hurt Mike cause he was annoying him, *everyone* calls him out on it and Raph feels terrible afterwards. Granted that was more serious than anything 12 Raph ever did but it still shows a more healthy dynamic imo

03 in general I personally feel has the healthiest Turtles dynamic, not saying 12 or Rise don't have their moments or that having more complicated dynamics in the family is bad, I just like the Turtles best when they sometimes butt heads but very clearly still have trust in each other and worry when something is up

People really don't understand that what Mikey's brothers do to him is fucked up yes they love him of course they are family but this doesn't excuse all their actions just like it doesn't excuse his but they need to understand that loving someone doesn't mean your not toxic and problematic espiaclly how they show it sometimes they have flaws just like everybody else so I find it really annoying how they play the their brothers or I have a sibling we beat the shit out of each other to oblivion and act like it's normal sibling behavior and me as someone with a sibling that is not true at all they just don't understand and I'm sorry you deal with them sending threats.

I'll never understand the mindset, but it's a thing. I know people who were physically maimed by their siblings, and some have no contact while others are extremely close. The sibling dynamic is so varied that nobody in the fandom is in complete agreement.

Years ago when Rise was initially popular, a weird war was started between Rise fans and 2012 fans over the siblings' relationships. Suddenly, 2012 was toxic and Rise was ideal. It got really intense for a while.

Some of us enjoyed exploring dark AU ideas, like, sure, okay, What If there was a version where they were feral and beat each other up and nobody was better than anyone else? You find those alternate universe ideas in every fandom. It certainly doesn't mean that we actually think Raph is a bully towards Mikey.

He'll, I wrote a whole series where 2012 Raph explored his emotional vulnerability with Mike's help. I have friends with temper issues, I have friends who are class clowns. None of them are above one another, and the inside jokes would probably seem really off-putting to someone who doesn't know the relationships.
