Toji rubs circles in Yuuta’s scalp, slides his hand down the nape, follows the spine and the vertebrae jutting out like they are looking to pierce through Yuuta’s skin. It is better than before, Toji tells himself. The signs of sickness are still present, in Yuuta’s spine and the way Toji mechanically counts its bones one by one, a habit he built from washing Yuuta and watching his frame grow thinner and thinner. They are still present in the sharpness of the hip bones, the way they point even through the folds of Yuuta’s stomach and his awful posture. They are still present in Yuuta’s ribcage, in the lines Toji can easily follow from the back to the sternum and the soft, barely present muscle of Yuuta’s chest. But Yuuta breathes, his heart beats and his chest fills up with each breath. Yuuta breathes, and shivers under Toji’s touch in an attempt to suppress a laugh, and when Toji pinches his stomach he lets out a high-pitched yelp. “Please stop tickling me,” he begs, or rather whines, his tone betrayed by the smile on his lips and the way he leans back against Toji even as he says this. It’s fine. Good, even, Toji decides. Even if illness still marks Yuuta’s body, Yuuta lives, and smiles, and leans on Toji like he wants to, not because he has to. “Fine,” Toji sighs jokingly, “I guess I can let you go easy this time.”
