Ko-fi thank-you sentences for redflawedglass behind the cut; they asked for dealer's choice, and I picked "Clark wakes up alive". ( chrono || non-chrono )
“I hope you don't mind me just showing up like this,” he says, gentle and apologetic. Conner never had enough choices in his life, short as it was. He feels like–Clark just wants better for him, this time. “Is it alright that I'm here?”
It was partially his fault, that Conner thought he couldn't choose things for himself for so long. Thought he couldn't have things he wanted. Thought he just had to accept whatever he was offered, more often than not.
Not always. Not every time. But–too much of the time.
If Clark can help him learn otherwise sooner . . .
Well. Of course he's going to try to.
. . . yes, appears very slowly in Clark's head, and he smiles at Conner again.
“Thank you,” he says. “I'm happy to hear that. I hope us meeting each other makes you happy too.”
Conner's face stays perfectly impassive, but his eyes go wet. He blinks, and Clark hears his heartbeat stutter again.
He could've done this last time. He could've done less than this, and Conner would've had a much easier and much less painful start to life outside Cadmus.
But he didn't, of course, so he can't do any less than this now.
“Call security,” Desmond says flatly. .
“On Superman?” Guardian asks in disbelief. “Sir, even if there was a reason to call security, I wouldn't do that to security.”
“He’s trespassing!” Desmond snaps. “And interfering with the subject, besides!”
“I mean, I don’t know if this is interfering . . .” Guardian says skeptically.
This is absolutely interfering, and Clark is going to be doing as much of it as (in)humanly possible, but he does prefer no one calling security and interrupting the conversation.
“Don’t mind me,” he says to them, as pleasant and sweet as Ma’s most passive-aggressive “bless your heart”. Then he smiles a little softer at Conner, trying to be . . . careful, maybe.
He did this so badly last time. Did so badly by Conner last time.
He doesn’t intend to do anything like that again.
Ever.
“It really is so good to meet you, kid,” he says gently. Simple and straightforward, still. Easy for a child to understand, he hopes–or at least easier. Conner had enough trouble understanding other people to begin with, and he can’t imagine it’d be any easier while operating a younger brain and with an even earlier interruption to his education uploads. “Would you mind if I hugged you now?”
Conner’s eyes . . . flicker, just barely. There’s confusion in them, Clark thinks, but it’s a little hard to tell. He’s even less expressive than the version of himself Clark’s used to.
. . . was used to.
Clark doesn’t think about that. Not right now.
. . . ‘hug’? appears in his head, slow and hesitant over an obviously unfamiliar word.
Clark debates throwing Desmond through a wall. Just a thin wall. Not a load-bearing one.
But definitely a wall.
“I mean I’d like to hold you,” he explains, because if Conner sees him get angry, he’ll blame himself for it. Of course he would, between his current age and the kind of things he’s likely had shoved into his brain so far. “Like you were holding your friend a moment ago.”
He points at the G-gnome to clarify, and Conner . . . hesitates. Nothing appears in Clark’s head.
“Call security immediately,” Desmond snaps at Guardian. “Now!”
“Sir–” Guardian starts, half-raising his hands, and Desmond’s expression turns murderous.
“That was an order, Guardian,” he says dangerously. Clark half-expects to feel G-gnomes in his mind or for Guardian to change his mind under their influence, but nothing happens.
He doesn’t look at Dubbilex, but he . . . wonders, a little.
Conner just barely shrinks in on himself, and Clark wonders how many times he’s been faced with an angry person so much bigger and older than him in real life, or even been out of his pod at all. Is this the first time? A regular occurrence? Something in-between?
The G-gnome hops up on Conner’s shoulders; leans forward over his head and inspects Clark curiously, tilting its own head. Conner freezes, and Clark sees the faintest trace of fear in the back of his eyes.
He wonders if the G-gnome’s putting it there, but Conner’s looking right at him.
So if the G-gnome is putting it there . . .
If it is, Clark can’t help but suspect it’s not actually a deliberate effort on the creature’s part, as opposed to a genuine by-product of Conner not knowing what to expect from him.
Not knowing if he’ll hurt the G-gnome, he means, remembering the way Conner had hesitated when he’d called it his friend.
Considering what he knows of how Desmond ran this place–is running this place right now . . .
“Hello,” Clark says, and smiles at the G-gnome. “It’s nice to meet you too.”
The G-gnome stares at him for a long, silent moment, and then slips back down behind Conner’s back and wraps its arms around his neck. Clark hears something like a whisper from another room, but not that clear, and Conner . . . hesitates, again.
Then the word hug appears in Clark’s mind again, this time tentative and longing, and he doesn’t hesitate himself at all. He scoops up Conner and stands up with him in the same moment, and Conner lets out a little breath as his thrumming heartbeat stutters in his chest, and Clark holds him against his own chest very, very carefully, as if he’s holding something more delicate than melting frost on a sunny morning or cracked porcelain.
Conner doesn’t seem to know what to do with himself; where to put his hands or arms. If he should hold onto him or lean into him or not.
Clark keeps him in his arms anyway, and swears to himself he’s not leaving without the kid. Not for anything. If Conner doesn’t want to come with him right now, then he’ll wait here with him until he does, no matter what happens outside.
If Conner never wants to come with him, well–then he’ll just stay, if that’s what it takes.
He’s not giving Desmond the chance to hurt or hide him. Not giving anyone that chance.
He wonders if the Conner he remembers even remembered being this small himself, or if it was so brief an experience that it didn’t stick in his head at all.
He suspects it might’ve been, and hates the thought.
Buzzes, appears in Clark’s head, still tentative. He doesn’t understand, for a moment, and then realizes Conner’s ear is practically against his chest. So he’s probably talking about . . .
“I always thought of it as more a ‘thrum’, myself,” he says, and Conner stares mutely at him. Their heartbeats aren’t a perfect match–even with cloned DNA, Conner isn’t quite Kryptonian enough, and his heart beats a little slower and harder than his does. The separate beats are more audible, too.
But it does still thrum, when it comes to it.
Warm, appears in Clark’s head too, and Conner ducks his head just enough to hide his face from Desmond when the tears start falling.
His expression doesn’t change at all, but the tears on his face are undeniable.
Maybe a load-bearing wall wouldn’t be so bad to throw Desmond through, Clark thinks, bundling the kid up tighter in his arms and wrapping his cape around him as he does. Then he looks at Guardian, and puts on the most pleasant smile he can manage without needing to actually throw Desmond through a load-bearing wall first.
“I appreciate you taking care of him, but it’s not good for him to be down in the dark like this,” he says, gently stroking what of Conner’s back the G-gnome isn’t perched on and pretending not to notice the fat, heavy tears dripping onto the El crest on his chest. “He needs the sun.”
“There’s, ah–a solar suit, sir,” Guardian says, but he looks uncomfortable even as he says it. “I mean–he’s being fed solar energy, not just . . . uh . . .”
He trails off, and looks much more uncomfortable; like he’s just realized what he’s saying. Maybe he has, given Desmond’s influence over the G-gnomes and what they do and don’t let people down here think.
Guardian still thinks he’s human himself right now, after all.

redflawedglass replied to your post: ok, so this is random as all hell but it’s been...
It’s just older and falling out of use. You see it in like wwii pamphlets about vd when they’re trying to be hip. Or in Grease, which is set in the 50s.
I see. That would make sense.

#I don't get the kallus redemption #fuck that guy #even if he did defect and come to your side? #you get his info and put him somewhere safe #you don't give him YOUR intelligence #wth show @redflawedglass (on this post)
THAT'S WHAT GETS ME TOO. Like, after Fenn Rau said, "You people can pass through the space I control safely. My people will not fight you." They still always treated Fenn Rau as if he were a prisoner of war. Because, well, he was. And even if he was cooperating with the Rebellion, though as a third party, they didn't treat him like they treat independents, they treated him like a captured enemy. He spent a long time under lock and key. Kallus, despite literally everything he does, apparently gets believed when he says he's defecting to them and is given one of the HIGHEST security clearances in the Rebellion via the valuable Fulcrum position. They don't appear to treat Kallus as an enemy, they don't even treat him as a mid-level operative. He becomes one of the key figures in the Rebellion intel network? Like, there seems to be zero of the caution the Rebellion displays at other turned assets, like Fenn Rau, displayed for Kallus? And I don't understand why.

I saw your tags on that Vader post, and my thoughts are Dooku was a great Sith! But he's not somebody that would have served Palpatine for 10,000 years immortal, as was The Plan. He was older, independent, and had been studying the Sith on his own. Vader not having the ambition or motivation to kill Sidious and rule on his own was Just Fine in the old creep's eyes- Darth Plagueis and other Legends books had a lot of stuff about Palpatine being the last Sith master by design.
I definitely think Dooku was ambitious enough - and smart enough - to attempt to overthrow Sidious, had Sidious not had him killed first. I doubt he would have succeeded, but he’d have definitely made the attempt.
It’s interesting to speculate about whether Vader, had he not been so severely injured, could have taking Sidious in a fight (he certainly couldn’t have out-planned or out-waited him), but in thinking about it, it must have been part of the plan, right? Otherwise why have the suit available? Certainly he stripped Anakin’s support system right out from under him, leaving him nowhere to turn even before he was maimed and burned, leaving himself as the only avenue open, especially once Padme rejected the original “together we can rule the galaxy” pitch.
(I admit to not having read any of the Sith-centric books, either pre- or post-Disney canon. Palpatine in vol 1 of the new comics seems both annoyed by Vader’s lack of ambition and also certain of it - he does some overly convoluted plotting to get him fired up about being replaced, which Vader seems to take as business as usual. I can see him using it as both a goad and a control of Vader’s behavior, even before we learn that there are built in ways for someone else to take over his suit/prosthetics.)

I'm glad you made up a Kaminoan cloning company, so it doesn't have to be All Of Kamino involved in that nonsense, but I'm shocked you had to! Why wasn't that already canon?
Yeah, it's a common trope in sci fi for an entire planet to have one culture. Star Wars and Star Trek are both prone to it. I didn't rly come up w the cloning company to fix that, tho, my friend and I were rapid-fire hitting each other with ideas and I tossed out that line of dialogue bc it sounded cool.
As for why Kaminoans are supposedly all involved in the cloning industry, I think it was explained as they all depend on it bc their planet is so vulnerable. They used the cloning tech to save their species from extinction, then branched outwards to paying clients to preserve it. If you interpret this to mean that their population is much smaller than a usual planet's bc of an extinction event, then it would be slightly less implausible for them all to be involved in cloning (barring support industries like fishing, construction, hydroponics farming, etc). Probs for your average single-person cloning contract it's not a global effort, but a long-term, multi-trillion credit contract like the clone army might represent a significant influx of money/security. I can see that mobilizing the whole planet, akin to the US home front in WWII. "Kamino! It is your patriotic duty to support the Republic Contract! The survival of your children is at stake!"

What did you think of the Darth Bane books? I saw them on your recs list, but there's no tag for it. I'm curious because they're highly rated, but quality of reviews on star wars anything make me nervous. The premise seems good.
I liked them! I actually like Darth Bane as a character a lot, and Darth Zannah is fantastic. I'll throw in the usual caveat that it's not always great with female characters, especially in the first book, but it did improve a lot by the third book. Plus they've got a bunch of interesting lore. I'd definitely recommend checking them out, I think they're worth reading
(I have (inevitably spoilery) posts on my blog tagged with the individual title of each book rather than a more general series tag, if you meant that?)

@redflawedglass replied to your post: i tried to buy a mike’s hard lemonade at star...
why wouldn’t they take out of state licences? all you need is bday and expiration date? which you can find by using your eyeballs
lmao it’s to prevent fakes... most people make/carry fakes that are out of state bc people might not know all the details about the state license layouts of various other states bc there are FIFTY of them (while they probably know their own state’s pretty solidly & are less likely to be fooled by an in-state fake)... & they take out of state licenses if you’re over 25 (bc it’s harder for teens with fakes to pass as 25 than it is for them to pass as 21) but im 23 so like. screwed.

Haven't done one of these in a while, but have a current projects list of the DC-related projects I owe people right now (not including assorted requests I'd like to finish). Most of these are thank-you sentences from Ko-fi, but also there's the bookshelf fic from last month too. Which admittedly is also from Ko-fi, but still, haha.
And, uh, just no comment on the eight billion OTHER things I'm working on right now, hahasob. I BELIEVE this is everything from Ko-fi right now, but if I'm missing anything/anyone, please hit me up in a message or an ask!
It's a process! We're processing! 😅
( there is def also a commissions list from before my last mental breakdown but that's, uh, not going great so we're just doing what we can there for now, hah. )

10 Questions Tag
Rules: answer 10 questions and ask 10 new ones.
Thank you to @therefugeofbooks for tagging me! :D
1. What’s your favorite cold drink?
Right now, it’s American ice coffee, but as ice chocolate milk (it’s just cold coffee chocolate milk with ice cubes) since I don’t like coffee. It sounds bad, but it’s surprisingly good, shout out to Americans I guess.
2. What’s the first thing you notice about a person?
Their accent....
3. Do you have any pets? What would you name if you had one (more)?
I currently have two cats (Kit-Kat and Charlie) and a dog (Toby), none of whom we named. I think Henley could be a good name for a cat.
4. What was your favorite TV show growing up?
Sesame Street. (We never got a tv in Israel, but I did like watching Zack and Cody on youtube with my friends.)
5. What’s your ideal vacation?
There are so many choices...
6. Is there any book that you want to read but by any reason you keep avoiding it?
A lot of big books scare me, especially since I walk home from the library xD So Dragon’s Milk by Susan Fletcher for that reason.
7. What book do you hope will be turned into a movie or TV show one day?
I think summer camp novels are a great choice to turn into tv shows, and there’s this series I read when I was younger about a Jewish girls’ summer camp that I really liked.
8. Are there any books that are really popular but you dislike?
The Little Prince! It’s so boring to me. If you like it, why do you, I’m super curious.
9. When did you last visit a library?
Monday.
10. Could you recommend me a book that you think is underrated?
Could I. As always, I’m going to recommend The Star and the Sword/Pamela Melkinoff because this book is the best (historical fiction, kids town is burned in a pogrom and they have to go to their uncle’s house which is through Nottingham Woods and past Robin Hood). For something I don’t recommend all the time, All About Simon and His Grandmother/Elisabeth Roberts, which is a bunch of cozy short stories told from the perspective of a little kid visiting his eccentric grandmother.
Tagging: @afairytale @iwritealittleofficial @tanda-soal @redflawedglass @zarinaa113 @kajsaschubeler @beautifulpaxielreads @baldursgatekeeper @anassarhenisch and @that-bookworm-guy to (if they want to) answer these ten questions:
1. What is your favorite subgenre (fairytale retellings, comedy of manners, alternative history, etc.)?
2. Do you prefer writing poetry or prose?
3. What’s your favorite book from where you live (interpret this as broadly or as small as you want to)?
4. Do you watch any reality tv?
5. Who is your favorite “sidekick” (from Robin to Ron and Hermione)?
6. Do you prefer warm or cold colours?
7. What is your favorite type of art to do?
8. What was your favorite subject in school?
9. Do you like writing book reviews?
10. What’s a short story I should read?

I had a doctor's appointment today (just routine, no worries!), and I figured that it's the perfect chance to rep the amazing masks I've gotten!
@redflawedglass made me six AMAZING cloth masks! They fit super well, they have a slot for a filter (I use a coffee filter folded in half), and they're comfortable. The nosepiece is adjustable for a great face seal. I'm inside my doctor's heavily-sterilized office right now, and with the filter I can barely smell the cleaners - it's that good. The mask I'm wearing has already been through the wash at least once.
The masks are made for donations, so there's no fixed price. Extras are going to healthcare orgs. I got mine in just over a week, which is crazy fast for production and shipping. I even got to choose the fabric from what was available! If you're still in need of a reliable, machine-washable cloth mask, I could not recommend these more.
*I make no apologies for my makeup-free face, I haven't worn makeup in weeks and I'm not about to start now

Thing I learned before the nice mask from redflawedglass showed up: If your big stupid head is too big and stupid to tie a standard-sized bandana around, you can instead hold it in place with your big stupid over-ear headphones.

name: Phosphorescent (sorry folks, I don’t give any of my RL names on the internet -- I’m Old School like that) nicknames: Phos gender: Female star sign: Libra height: 5′5″ish (approx 168 cm) sexual orientation: I tentatively ID as grey asexual biromantic, but like a lot of ppl, I am Confused(TM) hogwarts house: Gryffindor. (According to Pottermore, anyway. Logically speaking, I seem more of a fit for Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw -- I have far more traits & ideals that belong to those Houses than the others -- but then again, House seems to be determined more by what a person values/wants than anything else, so??? I have no idea.) favorite color: Yellow favorite animal: I like almost all animals, but I can’t say I have a clear particular favorite. average hours of sleep: It varies considerably from night to night, but... probably 7? cat or dog person: BOTH. But if I had to choose, I’d go with dogs. favorite fictional characters: ...I never thought I’d say this, but this question is way too open-ended. If allowed, I would list characters forever, and none of you want to see that. So instead I chose eight favorite series to list five or less favorite characters from (and let me tell you, the decision-making was painful, but I knew I had to draw a line for myself):
Protector of the Small series: Keladry of Mindelan; Nealan of Queenscove; Wyldon of Cavall; Lalasa Isran; Roald of Conte
Star Wars saga: Obi-Wan Kenobi; Leia Organa; Padme Amidala; Luke Skywalker; Finn
Squire’s Tales series: Terrence; Gawain; Elaine; Morgana; Sarah
Circle of Magic series: Trisana Chandler; Briar Moss
English Family Tree series: Lauchlin MacLeod; Andrew Dare; Lavinia Lennox; Camilla Lennox; D'hom'no
Howl’s Moving Castle series: Sophie Hatter; Charmain Baker; Lettie Hatter; Martha Hatter
