I'd love to hear about your favorite kinds of characters to create and write. What draws you to them? What about them holds your interest? Does it vary depending on your mood?

My favorite kinds of characters have a wide range of characteristics, but the most common traits appear to be:

an obvious dichotomy of strength and vulnerability - every person has their strengths and weaknesses, but my faves usually have the kind that play off of each other, like how Jet hates to expose his emotions but he's actually really empathetic when he allows himself to be

a funny little hero complex - not that they have to be The Chosen One or want to be, but that they see people around them that need saving or helping and, often despite reservations, feel oddly obligated to provide help, regardless of their ability

introspective thoughts - whatever color or dimensions they have, the thoughts showcase much more than what the characters say out loud

selective observance - they notice things about the people they care about but remain oblivious to other factors that others in the story easily observe

heavy-hitters - not physically, necessarily, but each of my faves has an action or a skill they do really well that positively helps other characters and furthers their development

somewhat self-destructive - for a variety of reasons and in a variety of ways, but they also have some misconception about themselves that leads to certain reckless decisions that (obviously) negatively affect their arcs and the other characters

a great capacity for selflessness - sometimes too much so, to the point where it turns into self-destruction, or otherwise leaves them vulnerable in ways they'd never allow usually

a great deal of determination - can swing wildly from positive to negative depending on how they're using it

You can probably already think of a few characters that fit these points. I love the ones that don't, also. Savannah doesn't have a hero complex, nor is she self-destructive. She spends considerably less time in her head because she feels everything out loud. But I love her for that, for the traits that make her who she is and for NOT being a cluster of my most favorite traits. She loves to be active, for goodness' sake! She loves swimming!

Jessalyn doesn't really fit these points either, despite being one of the three main characters of Magick Story and yes, most of my main protagonists tend to fit these categories. I love Jessalyn, though. She's different from my norm and that's delightful.

I have noticed that I typically give these traits to my boys, but it was never on purpose. As I grew them out, they sprouted my favorite characteristics because it suited their arcs as I wanted them to appear in the story. My girls that have them are:

Rune (city story)

Bell (youth story)

Erin (summon story)

Ree (anxiety story)

Kena (rain story)

My moods do influence who I want to be writing, but not the traits or arcs I enjoy the most. Those have settled and are apparently here to stay, seeing as they haven't budged in 6 years.

Were there any details or scenes in Dirt In The Doing that happened which you weren't expecting? Twists or turns it took that you hadn't originally planned for? Little character details that caught you off guard? That sort of thing?

oh yes, loads. I didn't expect a lot of it. this was just supposed to be a chill little fanfic that I didn't have to think about, but then I did think about it and I haven't stopped.

anything that happens in my stories is the result of several ideas sitting around until I pick which ones I want to include. I had a bunch of quick changes that happened to dirt in the doing that didn't stick around while I converted it from fanfic to wip.

since I was now building my characters without their prior templates, but didn't have any plans for them, I took my time with it. I didn't figure out Shadow's deal until 15k or so into the story and I didn't abandon all the templates right away. I just eased into the new stuff without changing the old, since this is a draft 0 anyway.

Copper always knew were Jet was and what he was doing Hawk has a much more chill attitude and has less direction in life Moss is not really a leader, he's just a support Yarrow has zero long-term goals and is passionate in a way that isn't tethered to anything, he isn't trying to achieve something Jet is at a stalemate when he meets Rune. he's lost sight of who he wants to be and what he wants to accomplish so he's just drifting Rune was not a transfer character. she's entirely mine but she changed too. she's even more independent and less of rebel. she just wants to prove her parents were murdered and get free of the people who keep trying to trap her. Shadow is the most aimless of them all. he's been abandoned by everyone in his life except for the gang and he has the most repressed trauma after Rune, probably.

there is no gang. they were all a little gang before, but they're just friends and coworkers now. Jet is the only one who actively gets into fights and Yarrow doesn't fight at all.

I took stuff from my idea box and added them to help things make sense, since there was a real plot now. Rune used to be part of a fighting ring - against her will, but this is how she knows how to fight - and she was emotionally manipulated by Max for years which is why she struggled to get away even after she became a legal adult and gained finnancial freedom.

What are the aspects or parts of writing that while you're doing them you feel most assured that you're good at them? On the other side, what are the parts that it's apparent to you, at least, that you're not so good at?

Hey, Sleepy-friend! Good to hear from you, let me grab you a warm cup of tea while you're here.

While I'm writing, I'm pretty confident in my descriptions and the character dynamics. I always get really excited when I get to a part that lets me work on a more poetic description or some character banter.

A weakness of mine is planning ahead, I'm afraid. I rarely know exactly where a story is going until I get there, and my plans tend to get kicked to the curb by my characters. As a result, my foreshadowing isn't always what it could be, because how can I give you hints that something is coming if not even I see it coming? Usually this isn't as big of a problem since I can pretend I did it on purpose in later drafts, but it is something I worry about for The Shackles of Time since I don't get that luxury ^^;

I'm also not very good with writing romance. Part of it is inexperience, and part of it is I'm not particularly familiar with it as a genre. I'm hoping it'll feel less stiff to me the more I work with it, but we'll see.

  OPDRACHT TIJD EN RUIMTE

Hallo beste lezers,

Ik had deze opdracht voor gisteren beloofd maar ik ben gevallen in de straat en heb me erg bezeerd. Het deed me denken aan de moeder van Jas die zichzelf van de trap gooide. Ik deed het wel niet met opzet. In dit fictieve opdracht gaat Jas, voordat het verhaal begint, naar een waarzegster. Ik zal het vanaf haar standpunt weergeven.

Ik duwde de grote paarse stoffen opzij en zag door het spleetje een grote kristallen bol. De rook erin deed me denken aan de sigaretten die vader steeds meer rookte en die ik in de vuilnisbak vond. Ik kwam binnen en zag de kristallen bol op een grote tafel liggen. De tafel was bedekt met een rood tafelkleed, rood zoals het bloed, zoals de duivel en het vuur. De kalmte maakte me rustig en ik ademde de mysterieuze geur in. Opeens voelde ik dat iemand naar me keek, ik draaide me om en zag haar. Ze was helemaal in het donkerblauw gekleed. Ze had grote oorbellen, grote lippen en grote ogen. Alles was bij haar eigenlijk groot. Ze nam plaats aan een stoel en zei: “Wil je weten welke hindernissen je te wachten staan?”. “Ja...” zei ik bevend. “Neem dan plaats”. Ik ging tegenover haar zitten en ze zei meteen: “Oh!! Ik zie, ik zie...”. Ik was erg bang van haar, haar grote ogen die me recht aankeken, ze gaven me kippenvel. Maar ik zei daar niks van omdat ik zo benieuwd was. “Ik zie, ijs... Ik  zie de stilte, de ijzige stilte.”. “Wat ziet u daarvoor? ” vroeg ik erg bezorgd. Mischien zou ik het kunnen voorkomen. “Ik zie ijs en stilte, de stilte duurt lang en zinkt weg naar de bodem...” Ik begreep er niks van, hoe kan je stilte zien en hoe kan het zinken. “Ziet u iets anders? ” vroeg ik benieuwd. “Ja” zei ze. “Bloed, ik zie bloed en een grote schok.”. Het woord bloed gaf me een rilling in de rug, ik zei geen woord meer en wachte het vervolg. De waarzegster zag mijn verbazing en vroeg: “wilt u de rest nog uitzoeken?”. “... J.. Ja...”. Ze knikte en zei: “Ik zie, Ik...” . Ze stopte midden in haar zin en werd helemaal wit, haar ogen werden nog groter en ze zei geen woord meer. “Wat is er?” vroeg ik verbaasd. “Moorden...” zei ze. “Honderden moorden...” . Op mijn beurt werd ik wit en ik maakte me heel klein. Het enige wat ik hoopte was dat ik het niet was die die moorden pleegde. “Wie is er d... dood...?” vroeg ik bang. “Ik... ik weet het niet zeker maar het... het zijn levende wezens, wezens die dicht op elkaar samenleven en elke dag dezelfde routine hebben” . Ik dacht meteen aan de stad, waar de mensen dicht bij elkaar wonen en elke dag moeten gaan werken in de kantoren achter computers. Hoe kan een moord in de stad met mij verbonden zijn. Ik leef toch op het plateland in een boerderij. “Is het mogelijk om het te voorkomen? “ vroeg ik aarzelend. “Nee, de toekomst is de toekomst. Je kan het niet veranderen.” zei ze. “U moet weg, teveel slecht nieuws is gevaarlijk, het kan ook gevolgen op mijn leven hebben. De goden kunnen mij ook als prooi nemen.” “Nee alstublieft!!” zei ik. “Een laatste projectie en ik ren weg.” “Een laatste...” . Ze keek voor de vierde keer in haar kristallen bol en zei: “Wat? Hoe is dat mogelijk?”. “Wat is er?” zei ik. “Ik heb voor de tweede keer de ijzige stilte...”. “Een projectie komt normaal gezien maar 1 keer...”. “Wat moet ik dan doen?” vroeg ik. “De goden geven me geen informatie meer, je ongeluk trekt mijn krachten naar beneden.”. “Ga weg voordat ik mijn beroep verlies!!”. Ik liep zo hard als ik kon, haar stem bleef nog even nagalmen in mijn oren en mijn hart bonkte zo hard dat die wel uit mijn borstkas vloog. Ik probeerde het te vergeten maar die woorden bleven maar in mijn hoofd. Bloed, Moord, Stilte... Niks was hier grappig of gelukkig. Belle zei me toch dat die waarzegster lief was. Ik liep naar huis en ging metteen naar mijn kamer. Wat vandaag was gebeurd zou ik aan niemand vertellen.

My Review of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

How did I get into this anime? Actually, I’ve had interest in seeing this before it even aired in Japan. It’s just that when it came to picking animes for the spring 2019 line-up, aside from the Fruits Basket reboot, I was literally all thumbs here. Not that they were all bad, they just didn’t hold a candle to the crazy fandom of Demon Slayer.

Tanjiro Kamado’s life is forever changed when his entire family is slaughtered by a demon. The only survivor of that massacare was Tanjiro’s little sister, Nezuko. However, Nezuko wound up turning into a demon after trying to save her mother and younger siblings. Even though she turned into a demon, she still recognizes Tanjiro as her brother and refuses to eat or have harm come to him. Nezuko is a rare demon as she doesn’t feast upon humans, but sleeps to regain energy. Plus, she is told to treat humans as if they were her own family. After all these events, Tanjiro vows to become a “Demon Slayer” to prevent anyone else going through what he and Nezuko went through. Not only that, but find a way to reverse Nezuko’s demonic state so she can be human again.

Along the way, Tanjiro teams up with two other demon slayers. One is Zenitsu, a coward who’s afraid of every little thing when he’s awake. When asleep, he can slice through some demon ass. And the other is Inosuke, a screaming, idiot that wears a boar head and wields two swords. And that’s all I’m gonna say here!

The show is called Demon Slayer, a show about slaying demons.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As of picking this up, several platforms including Crunchyroll, FUNimation, and Aniplex have picked this up streaming wise. Not only that, but Aniplex worked their asses off to get a dub so that Toonami could air this. As I’m always a sucker for watching English dubs, I wound up going through the entire series thanks to Toonami. Aniplex dubs are notoriously good and this one is no exception. They even managed to make Zenitsu tolerable (which is no easy feat). And then there’s…Oh no!

Uh-oh, Screamy McYellsALot is in this anime! I repeat, Screamy McYellsALot is in the main God-damned cast to this anime!

Yeah, if you don’t know already, that’s my nickname for Bryce Papenbrook. I don’t hate him and he doesn’t have that doornail in your brain sound that irritates you like Japanese Asta on Black Clover. It’s just that when you hear him play Eren Yeager, Rin Okumura, and Kirito all at the same time and all three boys are prone to screaming like they’re covered in fire-ants…you’ll see what I mean. Although, there seems to be a lot of screaming from the main cast. Especially when Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu are fighting over something stupid! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

FAVORITE CHARACTER: Nezuko! Sweet little imouto! The cutest little sister the world has ever seen! Look at her run! She doesn’t even need to speak to be this cute. Her grunts are cute enough to make her second-best character of the series.

Yeah…I said “second best”.

Don’t question it. Don’t crap on it! I’m on Team Screaming Boar-head! I can even get over hearing Screamy McYellsALot voicing him. I like my angry boar boy!

SHIPPING: I don’t believe there should be any kind of romance in this series. We’ve got more important issues at hand with demons on the loose. Especially a demon that resembles that of mid-80’s version Michael Jackson! So we don’t need a dorito-flavored head chasing skirts or lewding Nezuko…ZENITSU!

I’m sort of rooting for this. I’m just gonna read some spoilers and make sure this doesn’t end in tragedy.

Well, regardless of tragedy or not, I like this.

SO…IS THIS ANIMATION THE MOST SPECTACULAR THING EVER?!: I’m not arguing Studio ufotable can’t do great work. They are fucking masters with this craft. And even before episode 19, this animation was pretty damn good. That episode where Tanjiro is fighting Kyogai (the demon with the drums in his body) was one of the most spectacular anime fights I had ever seen. The movement of the characters alongside the twists and turns you get with the room shifting just grabbed me. Studio ufotable can surprise you with in-anime fighting and the fact that this was their first shounen anime where fight scenes are inevitable, they excelled.

Episode 19 was just…wow. Okay, I can’t be an asshole about this. I loved this episode. I loved the story, the animation was just superb, and watching all of these characters channel their family when at their breaking points was just…high praise all around!

WITH THAT SAID…Easily a top 5 in best animation of the 2010’s.

Boo me if you must, but I will not be mowed down by the Demon Slayer or Bust movement. Animes made before 2019 exist too, you know. And I’m still on Team Violet Evergarden, so freakin’ eat me!

ENDING: Throughout the series, we see Tanjiro fight and kill off a lot of demons. And unlike your standard demon that has no heart and no fleshed-out backstory, these demons were once humans and were manipulated into becoming demons to help them live a little longer. Many of them live with the regret of turning into a demon just to prolong their inevitable deaths. And one of those prominent deaths was Rui, the demon who created a whole family of spider demons. But dude wasn’t born a spider-demon! He was a weak child on the brink of death…

And then Kibutsuji came along…

Yes, this guy again! The one that looks like Michael Jackson! That powerful-ass demon who seems to pose as a normal human with a wife and child! The one responsible for slaughtering Tanjiro’s entire family and turning Nezuko into a demon! This fucking guy right here! But enough of Kibutsuji! The ones who took out Rui and the rest of the spider clan were the Demon Killing Corp. But now that they’re all taken care of, they have a few questions about why Tanjiro (a demon slayer) is traveling with a demon. So Tanjiro must answer himself to the Demon Killing Corp. I will now read off their names in hilarious fashion from right to left.

We have Snake-boy, Scarface, Who the fuck ‘members you, Insect-Bitch, Fire-Crotch, Pokemon stole this design for upcoming expansion package, Fushigi Yugi knockoff, I can’t be bothered with your shit, and finally Johnny Yong Bosch!

Thankfully, the leader of the demon slayers (Ubayashiki) told them that Tanjiro and Nezuko are special cases and are to not be harmed or prosecuted. We then spend the next several episodes watching Inosuke, Zenitsu, and Tanjiro go through some physical therapy if you will. So don’t expect to see a last-episode showdown with Kibutsuji. Although, that is not the last we will see of him in this series!

In the final episode, we get a flashback of what happened after Rui’s death. Kibutsuji kinda went on a bit of a violent rampage with his underlings and slaughtered a good chunk of them. But he spared one of these demons and by the looks of a certain movie trailer, we’re in for a good thriller on the train. So…

…

…What the crispy Jesus happened to Kibutsuji? When I see him dressed like a woman and THAT voice comes out, I’m thrown off that I couldn’t focus on him slaughtering his underlings. Damn!

Tanjiro and the others are all healed up and are ready to head out for their next mission. This time, they’re going to be traveling on a train with fellow demon slayer, Fire-crotch (real name: Kyoujurou Rengoku). On their tails is one of Kibutsuji’s men. Coming up, Demon Slayer – Mugen Infinity Train!

October 2020, maybe, we don’t know! COVID is a bitch!

I liked this series. Where do I even begin with this? First of all, the animation is phenomenal. Then again, we’re talking about ufotable! Despite this not being a part of the Type Moon family like Garden of Sinners or Fate, this was a wonderful breakout for ufotable to flex those infinity budget accounts. God, the fights with Kyogai and Rui were just phenomenal that I was just blown away with the animation. Definitely in the top 3 of best animation of the 2010’s! Yeah, I said top 3!

Next, the characters! Tanjiro seems to be a different kind of main lead in a shounen anime. When it comes to many main characters in Tanjiro’s position, you see them lead on a path of revenge because of what was taken from them. Yes, that’s a jab at Eren Yeager. Don’t at me! Tanjiro became a demon slayer to prevent anyone else to suffer the same way him and his sister did ever again and to hopefully one day return his sister to being a human. Not just that, but after slaying a demon he prays for their peace in the afterlife. He takes no joy in prancing around in their blood despite their many kill-counts.

Then we have the music! The BGM for each of the fights, all those special songs from episode 19, sheer perfection for a series like this! Then we have artist LiSA doing most of the songs heard. In the past decade, I was just okay with her music. I didn’t hate them or anything, I would just recognize her voice when she would sing for Angel Beats or Sword Art Online. But damn, 2019 was just her year!

I give my full recommendation for Demon Slayer. I have high hopes for this one as long as it continues to stay under the careful guidance of ufotable and Aniplex. And with the manga gearing up for a close, I hope for a graceful ending anime wise in the coming years.
