Renée Jacobi, Jacques-André Boiffard, 1930
In this context it is worth looking again at the surrealist Jacques-Andre Boiffard's photograph of Renee Jacobi (1930), which suggests she is a corpse in a mortuary, and to consider Luc Sante's comments on crime photography: "In looking at a crime photo we know we are looking at an image of radical disjunction before we are consciously aware of its narrative content. But then crime retails death, or at best loss, so that even before spectations with no personal stake in the matter it is charged. It is surrealism with a knife."
Footnote 59 in Body and Soul: Jazz and Blues in American Film, 1927-63 by Peter Stanfield, found on Google Books.

Preliminaries: Wolf 359
Captain Isabel Lovelace received six nominations and therefore is automatically qualified.
Propaganda:
Daniel Jacobi:
I'll be honest with you. He's not even the sexiest character in Wolf 359 but he does live in my head rent free and if you're into submissive types I have just the man for you!
Funnee explosion man. Also, doesn't sound like much in a podcast but was somehow the first #confirmed one in w359: canon LGBT. (mlm but we don't know which flavour)
Hera:
I don't care if she's an AI with no physical form, she is HOT
my digital wife <3
Renée Minkowski:
killed a man with a harpoon while bleeding from a gut shot. you can't argue with that kind of sex appeal
Warren Kepler:
HEAR ME OUT!! Love him or hate him he's on your mind. He's the literal worst and a truly vile person but he also sold his soul to the company store and in doing so lost absolutely everything. He's not even a person he's a weapon. He holds every card until his loyal dog bites the hand that feeds. He has layers. Idk his voice just did something to me at an impressionable time in my life <3
some people like him because they like the authority, but i think everyone agrees that the real sexyperson factor is how pathetic he ultimately is. hottest thing he ever did was sacrifice himself for the greater good with zero witnesses.

Welcome to, Introducing My Mother to Wolf359!
Episode 50: The Hiccups Method
“Is this the one with the treadmill?”
“The infamous treadmill scene”
“She’s one of them”
“Freaky dial up!”
“Oh snippity snippity”
“You should do it”
“Sh! Shshshsh!”
“She’s not trying very hard”
“She’s gonna turn it up?”
“Is that Eiffel just trying to scare her constantly?”
“I keep forgetting he’s still there.”
“Oh!”
“Free float?”
“Someone should be out there with her!”
“Get high? Is he telling her to get high?”
“Do they want them to drive through the star? That’s my guess.”
“A-yeah”
“Aww”
“But they didn’t even kiss though! I thought there was gonna be more with all that drama!”
“Text Willow and tell them I just heard the fucking treadmill scene and am very disappointed now!”
Lines she laughed at
“I am not your E.T helpline”
“Do not try to get your freaky dial up on me.”
“Okay fine. It is a little awful”
“Do not try and shrink me.”
“Would you do it?” “Pfft no. Of course not.”
“Any ideas that don’t involve lethal harm of firearms?” “…I’ve got nothing.”
“Well… I’m never getting that minute back”
“Just keep breathing!”
“Sorry! Also, ow!”
“Well in that case, your heart rate is way too low.”
“We are not asking Kepler for ideas! …So… any ideas, Kepler?”
“Perks of being made in alien Taiwan…”
“See? Scared ya”
“But see?! You don’t mess with the hiccups method!”
“Not yet you don’t. But you will. You will.”

minkowski and hera (indirectly; to herself) are the only ones who call eiffel "doug", eiffel is the only one who calls minkowski "renée", hilbert is the only one who calls lovelace "isabel", and no one calls hilbert by (any of) his first names. kepler calls jacobi "daniel" and maxwell "alana", and maxwell and jacobi use each other's first names too, but neither of them ever calls him "warren" - the only person who does is rachel, while he calls her "miss young." pryce and cutter are the only people who use each other's first names (though cutter's habit of almost always only using first names is a whole other thing.)

THERE IS ANOTHER. this one has minkowski and lovelace though :) Gemini (6327 words) by Polychoric_Isopod Chapters: 3/? Fandom: Wolf 359 (Radio) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Doug Eiffel/Daniel Jacobi Characters: Daniel Jacobi, Alana Maxwell, Doug Eiffel, Hera (Wolf 359), Renée Minkowski, Isabel Lovelace, Miranda Pryce, Marcus Cutter Additional Tags: memory is a weird thing, Imaginary Friend Alana Maxwell That's Not Actually Imaginary, Amnesia, Other Additional Tags to Be Added, as the chapters get added, mention of first aid and other health stuff, Gun Violence (mentioned), Queerplatonic Maxcobi, Alana being kind of a bitch but it's very deserved, Mentions of Hera feeling trapped/suffocated, Swearing, pryce being a total bitch (NOT deserved) Summary: Daniel Jacobi wakes up one day with a voice in his head that tells him he used to be an astronaut. This voice, though she claims she used to be a real person and a dear friend of his, has no evidence of existing. And yet, running into an old- friend? Colleague? Coworker? Whatever- might provide the push he needs to finally dig into why his all-too-fuzzy memory is the way it is.

how do you feel about the minffel hugs?? They’re some of my favorite moments in the entire podcast. 1. When he comes back from the USS horrible unending nightmare and 2. When he gets back from his meeting with the Dear Listeners
OHHHH I THINK ABOUT THESE SO OFTEN
eiffel and minkowski’s hugs make up two thirds of every canon hug in the podcast. the only other time positive physical contact occurs is when lovelace hugs eiffel shortly after his breakthrough from the neuro inhibitor (unless you count fourier and lambert’s hug that took place in change of mind). both of these are so meaningful in their own way so i’m gonna talk about them separately because. my god. the parallels.
the first time eiffel and minkowski hugged. broke me. it was the first physical display of affection used in the entire show, and involving minkowski. renée is very clearly not an affectionate person, and it’s made obvious through the awkwardness involved after she lets go. that hug was one hundred percent a spur of the moment, impulsive, heart-driven decision. she thought he was dead, and she personally blamed herself for his death, and so when she finally sees him again without the intrusion of other eyes that expect her to be the strong, stoic commander that she often needed to be, she doesn’t know what else to do. she grabs him, pulls him in, and she cries. both minkowski and eiffel are notorious for failing to communicate their feelings verbally, and so this is her way of telling him i missed you. life without you here was awful for everyone and when i realized i may never see you again it broke me. it’s an extremely emotionally vulnerable moment for her, perhaps the most vulnerable she lets herself be for the rest of the podcast.
now the second one. the second one is so much worse. hugging is something that seems like something much more natural to eiffel. he’s never been shy about his opinions of people, positive or negative, and now that he knows minkowski considers them close enough to hug, hugging her is the first thing he does once he sees her again. he’s the one who initiates the hug, and he’s under the assumption that it’ll be a sweet, emotional reunion just like last time. she’s the first voice he hears, and the first face he sees once he gets back, and he’s completely put at ease. he feels safe with her. but this time, minkowski doesn’t hug back. not because she doesn’t want to, but because it isn’t her. eiffel is most likely too relieved just to be back to think too much of it, but it’s revealed by jacobi that the crew is at least semi conscious of their actions while being controlled by pryce, so even though minkowski would be happy he’s home, and would love nothing more than to hug him, in that moment she’s probably screaming for him to get out, to do anything else. the last embrace they share, the last real moment of intimacy between the two, is soiled, and minkowski will never be able to make it up to him because eiffel isn’t eiffel after the finale anymore, either.

astronaut food
i've been meaning to outline the eating habits of the main wolf 359 characters. specifically, what do they eat and drink, what do they enjoy, what are their kitchen sins, how do they eat, and why. this is going to be a combination of canon, implications, and my personal read on them. let's get right into it:
Tumblr media
DR. ALEXANDER HILBERT
his view on eating is utilitarian to the point of reddit-ness, and he'll often go without meals to get something done or to prove a point (see: Succulent Rat-Killing Tar, What's Up Doc). his palate is a very "get what you can out of whatever you can" approach without considering much in the way of taste or texture (seaweed coffee is his invention). HOWEVER! hilbert has one prized treat that is his achilles heel/autism samefood: Pecan Pie (see: Mission Mishaps Cold Turkey). i think it's got a unique texture, and a comforting smell that meshes with his suppressed desire for family and safety well.
kitchen sin: he regards the human need and desire for food as both frivolous and an unfortunate necessity.
Tumblr media
LIEUTENANT RENÉE MINKOWSKI
she definitely enjoys fruit, or she wouldn't've cryogenically sealed a Braeburn apple (which are excellent for baking or dehydrating, btw) and brought it to space (see: What's Up Doc). she's also a planning type, and i think an efficient and tasty meal that involves the preparation and presentation of a fancy yogurt bowl is a favorite of hers and a dietary staple. minkowski is highly conscious of table manners, although that slacks a bit on the hephaestus, because she's eating across the table from hilbert and eiffel, for god's sake. still, clean and organized is her food philosophy. she owns possibly the only tupperware collection on the planet that includes every matching lid. the wine has almost no canon basis, and is mostly just a nod to voice actor Emma Shierr-Ziarko's own love and knowledge of wines.
kitchen sin: she thinks a clif bar counts as a real dinner if it's a weeknight.
Tumblr media
CAPTAIN ISABEL LOVELACE
lovelace's favorite food is appetizers for the whole table, a team pizza party, a big awesome-smelling potluck, or anything meant to be shared. for her, eating is a casual and (more importantly) a communal activity. the social engagement from a loud brunch will nourish her just as much as the food does. besides that, i think she likes chocolate with nuts in it (e.g. snickers, chocolate covered almonds, rocky road ice cream, etc), but one of her favorite desserts is probably a strawberry milkshake. maybe it's a way to make up for all the protein shakes and high-efficiency smoothies (that taste like wet cement) she has to chug on account of the intense way she lives and works.
kitchen sin: she is a vulture if anyone else is cooking or eating. "you gonna eat that?" and picking off searing hot pans and baking sheets. she's really just curious but she never asks until its already burning her mouth.
Tumblr media
COLONEL WARREN KEPLER
ok, the drink is a given. it's even on his official wolf 359 store merchandise. he likes the feel of it in his hand. but what does kepler eat? when does he eat? in private, obviously. his job is an exercise in restraint and perception, and he is his job (see: A Matter of Perspective). monsters under the bed don't need to eat, and they certainly won't be that vulnerable in front of a superior. but he's still a person, so i struggled a lot trying to figure out what he would crave. fish tacos, biscuits and gravy, and a loaded chicago hot dog were all floated, but the only meal i could picture kepler ordering where anyone could see him was lamb with mint sauce. it's expensive, recognizable, difficult to cook exactly right, and almost bloody.
kitchen sin: he will go out of his way to make you feel bad about what you're eating no matter what it actually is. he doesn't even have to say anything, he'll just glance at you or shift his posture slightly.
Tumblr media
DANIEL JACOBI
this is a guy who loves to snack (see: Time To Kill. pringles: popped). he likes crunchy, salty snacks a lot, but it's more about the activity than the taste. that doesn't stop him from ritualistically complaining (see: Mission Mishaps No Complaints). he takes his time eating, but he doesn't pay much attention to it, which is why the longevity of a slushy is a favorite of his. jacobi lives off road snacks, but will find a way to complain about the points of a michelin star. he just likes bitching! the stinky cheese (see: Need To Know) pictured is a baked Camembert, because it's my post and i get to pick the cheese. Camembert is one of my personal favorites, but it can be fairly pricy and is a pain to clean up, which doesn't matter to jacobi (goddard company credit card please!)
kitchen sin: he spends an excruciatingly long time on any meal to the point where, if he had his way, they'd bleed into each other by taking an average of one bite every 15 minutes.
Tumblr media
DR. ALANA MAXWELL
the drink pictured is a rockstar energy, but whatever legal(ish) stimulants can get inside her body the most effectively is maxwell's favorite. she eats a lot of takeout (see: Mission Mishaps Happy Holidays) because it's quick when she forgets to eat all day and it's tasty and she has the pay grade for it. she grew up in a tiny nowhere town that was in all likelihood at least partially a food desert, and her family dinner table warranted a restraining order, so i think in her adult life she tries to get as far away from that as possible. this often manifests in trying all the outlandishly spicy things she can get her greasy mitts on, because she is both inquisitive and masochistic. fuego takis are pictured because theyre a staple snack that jacobi will buy for her if she promises to share (she's lying and will eat the whole bag)
kitchen sin: she allows the nearly-empty cans, bottles, bowls, and bags to sit out and fester. once every 2 weeks she sets a timer and rushes through dumping it all into a giant black trash bag so that she doesn't get an infestation of ants again.
Tumblr media
OFFICER DOUGLAS F. EIFFEL
and the "F" stands for food! eiffel definitely spends the most time talking about food. he's hungry! since his eating habits are so prominent in the show, i figured a compilation of his food and drink moments in canon would work a little bit better than my own personal extrapolation. excerpts from Limbo and Boléro were omitted.
kitchen sin: while some people might argue that pineapple on pizza belongs in this spot, i am not so judgemental. i just want him to eat from dishes that aren't visibly dirty.
Tumblr media
HERA
[insert byte joke]
kitchen sin: she doesn't have a mouth.

Pokimoko's Fic Bonanza
Tumblr media
I've been jumping between a lot of fandoms lately, and I've ended up with a small collection of (not quite small) fics as a result. And because they are such a random assortment I thought, hey, why not post them altogether and make a day of it. So, without further ado, here's my odd party mix of fics for your viewing pleasure.
Tumblr media
Lacuna - A Moon Knight Fic
Word Count: 1.5K Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Steven Grant & Marc Spector Characters: Steven Grant (Marvel), Marc Spector, Wendy Spector, Jake Lockley Summary: lacuna (noun) 1. an empty space or gap where something should be 2. a cavity or depression, especially in bone
(or: marc and steven fill in the gaps)
Where You End and I Begin - An Owl House Fic
Word Count: 15k Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Hunter | The Golden Guard & Luz Noceda, Flapjack | Cardinal Palisman & Hunter | The Golden Guard (The Owl House), Hunter | The Golden Guard & Caleb Wittebane, Hunter | The Golden Guard & Philip Wittebane | Emperor Belos, Hunter | The Golden Guard/Willow Park, Hunter | The Golden Guard & Gus Porter, Hunter | The Golden Guard & Vee (The Owl House), Darius Deamonne & Hunter | The Golden Guard Characters: Hunter | The Golden Guard (The Owl House), Luz Noceda, Flapjack | Cardinal Palisman (The Owl House), Caleb Wittebane (Mentioned), Darius Deamonne, Willow Park, Philip Wittebane | Emperor Belos, Gus Porter, Vee (The Owl House) Summary: All of Hunter's life, he has copied those around him; all the ways they smile, all the ways they are cruel and, most importantly, all the ways in which they pretend. But as dark truths come to light and new friendships are formed, Hunter slowly but surely learns to carve out his own identity.
Let's Take the Long Way Home - A Bright Sessions Fic
Word Count: 5.8K Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Mark Bryant/Oliver Ritz Characters: Mark Bryant, Oliver Ritz Summary: After the events at Yale, Mark and Oliver stop at a roadside attraction, and have an important discussion. (Or: "hey, why don't we express our feelings to each other right next to this giant milk bottle?")
Graceful Degradation - A Portal 2 Fic
Word Count: 21K Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Wheatley & Wheatley (Portal), Wheatley (Portal) & Original Character(s), GLaDOS & Wheatley (Portal) Characters: Wheatley, Original Character(s), GLaDOS, Background & Cameo Characters Summary: It's 1982, and Aperture Science has made a breakthrough in the development of AI, having successfully completed the first ever artificial duplication of a human mind. The prototype speaks and thinks just like its progenitor, the scatterbrained yet determined Doctor Wheatley, but the question remains: is the digital copy truly the same as the human it believes itself to be? Is it happy to exist as it does? And why does it insist on being treated like a person?
Well, there's only one way to find out. It's time to test. And test. And test. And test.
The Ghost in the Machine - A Wolf 359 Fic
Word Count: ~23k Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Doug Eiffel & Hera, Doug Eiffel & Renée Minkowski, Doug Eiffel & Isabel Lovelace, Doug Eiffel & Daniel Jacobi Characters: Doug Eiffel, Hera (Wolf 359), Renée Minkowski, Isabel Lovelace, Daniel Jacobi Summary: Struggling to find his place amongst a ship of strangers he once called friends, Doug turns to the recordings of Officer Eiffel, the person he can't remember ever being, in the hopes of better understanding the world around him. But things take a turn for the strange when those same recordings start to talk to him…

😂 a funny or crack WIP snippet
❓ any WIP snippet you want!
😍 published lines or a section of a fic that you loved writing?
Hi Sophie! Did a little Wolf359 writing that I think you'll enjoy!
😂: I don't know if I sent this yet, but it makes me smile!
“Apologies for the brief delay. I have the files here for you ma’am-” began David, only to stop short when he found himself looking down the barrel of a gun.
“Oh. Daniel,” observed David, wrinkling his nose in disgust.
“I’m afraid you’re not on the approved list for this flight.”
“I’m not? Oh dear. Well, this is embarrassing,” said Jacobi. “I suppose the polite thing to do would be to leave and save you from the trouble of escorting me out of here. But, the thing is, this is a really cool plane, and I could really use a ride. You don’t mind if I hijack it do you? Just for the afternoon?”
❓: No, I'm not giving context :)
“He’s not…” said Minkowski.
“He is,” said Jacobi, shaking his head.
“Of course he is. His whole life has been building to this moment.”
Update: The fic for both of these snippets can be found here
😍: These lines because I can totally see this happening:
From For Better or For Worse:
“It’s okay,” said Eiffel, slowly making his way towards Dominik, as if he were an easily spooked animal.
“Why don’t we just go inside and sit down, have a cup of tea-”
“No,” growled Dominik, taking a desperate step backwards, and grabbing hold of a rake that had been left in the yard as his impromptu weapon.
“STAY AWAY FROM ME! I AM NOT DYING, AND I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE UNTIL YOU TELL ME WHAT HAPPEN TO RENÉE!”
He swung the rake at Eiffel, who quickly ducked out of the way.
“Ah! Jacobi…Jacobi help please!” begged Eiffel as he took cover.
Jacobi grabbed hold of Dominik and wrestled the rake out of his hands.
Dominik struggled and kicked against his attacker.
“Ah…okay, okay…easy…” said Jacobi, trying his best to gently subdue his commander’s husband.
“Where is Renée?” Dominik cried, unable to push any harder against the man’s grip, though he tried with all his might.
“What have you done to her? Please, please just tell me!”
“JACOBI, EIFFEL, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”

I went to space and all I got was series
Fandom: Wolf 359
Author: thought
Relationships: ALL of the platonic relationships, Kouldelka/Minkowski/Lovelace
Summary: In which Renée Minkowski comes back from space with, uh, souvenirs.
Or: That's the thing about finding a family: you still have to live with them afterwards.
Poster’s Note: okay so this fic series was a DELIGHT from start to finish. it was all published before the series ended and you can kind of tell by the choices, but they weren’t BAD choices. they were very well thought out and executed choices.
a few things i liked that diverged from canon: both maxwell and hilbert lived. the author never gets deep enough into it so that we know ALL the details, but they all come back together, with kepler in cryo. he’s the only one that doesn’t join the minkowski house gang, and jacobi and maxwell are working out a lot of leftover feelings from that, as well as everything else.
it’s funny, sad, and insightful just like the source material :)

Ok so I finished Wolf 359 and I have thoughts
First off: It is very good, quality podcast, 10/10. And then, in no particular order:
Ok so obviously I love Hera, she's my best special girl. I love many of the characters but Hera is a darling. I love how she goes from pushing the limits and loopholes of her code to see if she can just, y'know, murder the crew to genuinely bonding with them and loving them as they love her back. I want to rip Miranda Pryce limb from limb for what she did with the sneaky subvocal restraint.
I adore the thematic naming of the AIs in the show. Hera - Greek goddess of protection for mothers and marriage but known for her jealous and vindictive streak which is just, so Hera.
Her precursor on the Hephaestus was Rhea, the older Greek goddess of motherhood, the mother of the gods (inc. Hera) fitting with her role as mother program and an earlier iteration of the line.
The testing AI being called Eris, as in, the goddess of discord, both the horrible and the testing kind - not a goddess worshipped with temples (stations as temples, is that a thing?) but more a personification of Shit Going Wrong.
The airplane AI being called Enlil, Sumerian god of wind, air, earth and storms, what could be more fitting for a plane's autopilot?
Other characters though are also great, everyone loves Jacobi, even if he's a total bitch at times. Maxwell, forever in our hearts you wee monster. Cutter is amazing, I love how unnecessarily creepy his Chirpy Chipper Attitude is at all times.
Rachel Young is the scariest motherfucker in the entire show tbh. She just strolled in and near enough out-Cuttered Cutter and walked away with a job.
I love how Hilbert is an amoral nutbag except we get these little snippets of his backstory and the way he says things that make it clear he's...well ethically horrendous and unforgivable but he actually does care. He really is doing all that for the greater good (and if it worked it would be good), he really is trying to stop people dying, he just thinks that the net good means that, while he tries to avoid it, some deaths are a worthy price. His "greater good" isn't the "it's good if we get to control everyone like puppets" of Cutter and Pryce, it's legit a world where people can be cured of illnesses and radiation sickness, and live longer, healthier lives. It's fucked up but the man genuinely was trying to improve human health and wellbeing because of the trauma he experienced as a child.
I love how so many things were left hanging and then eventually tied up, like Minkowski's time skips, and Doug's Mystery Box, but at the same time we never really do get any real closure on like, what was in the walls of the original Hephaestus? Or why Hilbert started referring to the plant monster like he was being enthralled by it???
As an aside, one thing that I do find feels odd is Minkowski's name. She is Polish, she moved to the US when she was 11 years old, and she's Very Fucking Clear about her surname being said in the Polish way because fuck she's still Polish even if she hid her accent and Americanised herself. Which means her surname should be Minkowska, because Polish surnames are usually gendered. Her dad would have been Minkowski but her mother and her would take the surname Minkowska. But maybe the whole thing about the importance of her surname was a later addition to the character and long after it was established that she was called Minkowski.
As an aside, I loved Minkowski laying into Hilbert and just dropping a wee сука in there, like, yeah you tell him Renée!
And just so many moments through the whole thing are amazing. Jacobi dropping that he likes men, crashing Lovelace's train of thought "-wait, seriously?", and the later possible implication that he's having to deal with horror of seeing people who've been turned into techno-zombies and also one is possibly an ex-boyfriend. Also Jacobi being like "I have an idea!", and the idea is always explosions.
There's so much more I could say but it's just, so much.
