A Summary of Repeatverse {if not Tri as a whole}

Repeat!Daisuke, holding up a Not Great Drawing: Well, basically, to stop the Virus, which Meicoomon was Infected with, from being spread further amongst the Digimon, your group 'originally', in 2005, went off to the Digital World to beat up, and get information out of, one of the key guys who first appeared, that "Alphamon"... then the fake Kaiser showed up!... then the older "Gennai"! Jou: T-Those {drawings} look nothing like them!! Mimi, EXCITED: No, I kind of see it!! Repeat!Ken, Helpfully Adding as Daisuke holds up more drawings: But Alphamon wasn't necessarily a wholly "bad" Digimon, {though Alphamon DID Get up to a Lot of Things...} and the "Kaiser" was a fake who ended up 'being' that "Gennai", who was ALSO a fake. Repeat!Daisuke: So you realized that the guy who's extremely evil was {Holding up scribbled Drawing!!} "Yggdrasil", who has a role in 'maintaining' the supposed "balance" of the Digital World, along with {Holding up Another Drawing} "Homeostasis", that 'being' who keeps trying to possess Hikari-chan! What if the Danganronpa V3 Characters Were Given Digimon? Pt 3

Part 1, Part 2, Part 4

Here’s what I originally wanted to be included in the same post as Kaede, but the Tumblr app hates me so I had to copy and paste everything into a separate post.

Maki Harukawa

I think Maki was the easiest one for me so far. I already had sort of an idea of what I wanted do with her. I think it also helps that she had a lot more screen time compared to Kirumi and Kaede who both died early game. Some of those ideas changed, but I am proud of this line overall.

Rookie: ToyAgumon

I know this one is a little weird, but hear me out on this one! Honestly this rookie choice was a bit last minute. I had originally planned to use Commandramon, but I decided to use ToyAgumon as my default pick instead because I know I want to use it if I end up doing Mukuro. I settled on ToyAgumon because I wanted something that was related to the fact that Maki was first said to be the Ultimate Child Caregiver. While that talent ended up being fake she was still raised in an orphanage and had to look after the younger kids a lot. I really wanted to give Maki a seemingly cute and/or child-related digimon early in her line that transitions into something more dark and deadly. ToyAgumon is literally a digimon made of legos so the child connection is definitely there. This will reflect how her talent went from something sweet like Ultimate Child Caregiver to something much more sinister like Ultimate Assassin. My original line did not have that aspect so when I realized the overlap I would have if I end up doing Mukuro, it did not bother me so much when I ended up changing it. If the colors through you off we could use ShadowToyAgumon instead, since it is just silver.

But I do still think that Commandramon is an amazing pick that you could easily use as the rookie instead if you prefer. It fits well with Maki’s assassin talent and it hints at her talent in using different types of weapons. But no matter which rookie you prefer I think both will be a good transition into their Champion form.

Champion: Sealsdramon

For anyone that prefers Commandramon, I am sure you will be happy to know that I used its default champion form. I originally was not going to use this one because I didn’t think it looked like a Maki digimon. I briefly thought about using BlackGatomon or Meicoomon, because once again I liked the idea of using something cute and both alluded to darker themes. But I was having trouble making those two picks work, so I decided to look into Sealsdramon more in depth. They are literally used as assassins in the digital world. I take back what I said in the beginning this is a perfect digimon for Maki. I also did not notice this until I started typing this post, but Sealsdramon uses knifes, which is Maki’s main weapon.

Ultimate: Aegiochusmon Dark

I know I said I wanted to avoid repeats, but this is a different form and Kirumi’s Aegiochusmon would be an alternate digivolution anyway, so I am not counting it as one. It still has some animal/dinosaur like aspects so I think the transition works okay. I did think about using Sealsdramon’s default digivolution Tankdramon, but I think that focused too much on weapons. I will admit I am a bit Aegiochusmon obsessed so maybe there are better digimon to use than it’s dark form for Maki. But I did actually put some thought behind this one. I really liked the idea of giving Maki a vaccine type digimon that looked evil/more like a virus type. I know that technically wether a digimon is a virus, vaccine, or data type don’t actually determine wether a digimon is good or evil, but I still like the idea. Surprisingly not matter what form Aegiochusmon takes it still remains a vaccine type digimon, even if it takes the dark form. Since vaccine types are usually depicted as the hero-like digimon, I thought having an evil looking vaccine type would serve as a good parallel for Maki. She seems like a cold-hearted ruthless assassin, but in reality Maki only became an assassin to protect the orphanage she grew up in. Underneath that tough and cold personality is a person who really cares about the people she is close to. Maki is not a bad person. LadyDevimon was also a digimon that was a strong contender though since a mostly portrayed as evil digimon would be put in a more heroic role if this was an anime/fanfiction. The parallel would not be made in the exact same way, but it would still exist.

Mega: Gaiomon

Since Maki’s digivolution line got darker and more evil looking as it went I wanted a mega that at least kinda looked like it could be a villain. While Maki is not a villain in Danganronpa a lot of the V3 cast treated her like one when they found out she was the Ultimate Assassin. Also if this was an anime/fanfiction Maki would totally be the edgy character with the edgy looking digimon. I will die on this hill! I was originally going to use Lilithmon since the transition from a more feminine digimon like Aegiochusmon would make sense. But then my dumb*ss completely missed that both Sealsdramon and Aegiochusmon Dark both had blade-like weapons. So I was like wait I can’t have a digivolution line for Maki with no blade wielding digimon. Her main weapon is a knife (at least I think it is since she even has her own sprite of her using one). So I eventually settled on Gaiomon since it had some very obvious blades, and it looks kinda edgy. Also the dinosaur like base serves as a nice connection to the rest of the line. I will admit that most of my thought process was based on my own stupidity, but I actually really do like this pick. I am glad I didn’t use Lilithmon because I don’t think her whole lust theme would fit Maki anyways. I did also think of using Reapermon since an assassin is associated with death, but I didn’t think it fit as well. It’s still a solid choice.

Now Maki is one of the few characters that I will not give a dark digivolution too. This is mainly because most of Maki’s digivolution line looks evil or like the dark form of something. If you want one really badly you could use Reapermon I guess?? I just didn’t think giving her one would fit very well. Instead I am going to give her an alternate Mega in the form of GuardiAngemon.

To explain this it’s time to go back to fanfiction/anime territory. As I mentioned earlier I think Maki would most likely play the role of the edgy/standoffish character in the series. Similar to Kiriha in Xros Wars or Rei Katsura from Appmon (yes I do consider Appmon to be a part of digimon. Sue me). I can see her having a distant relationship with both her digimon and the rest of the cast. Possibly also struggling with a lot of self loathing due to her assassin work. But overtime she grows to trust her friends and partner digimon, as well as herself. This could happen in a big final battle or something similar and instead of becoming Gaiomon her partner becomes GuardiAngemon a holy angel digimon of light. Maki is finally “embracing the light” and after giving her a very evil/dark looking line I think her digimon becoming a literal angel would fit that theme well. This is not me saying that Gaiomon was actually a dark digivolution. It’s more of a your lack of trust and self loathing was not letting your digimon reach its fullest potential situation.

I settled in GuardiAngemon because the angel digimon are the most obvious forms of light and good. I thought her mega doing a complete 180 would be fun. Also because it has blades for arms and I wanted to keep the blade theme with Maki. It is a shame that the dinosaur theme is gone and the connection is very small, but that’s digimon for you.

That’s it for Maki! As you can see while I am very proud of this line, and there were a lot of other strong options for me to give her. Once again I would love to see your guys’ opinions on what digimon you think would better suite the characters if you think mine are kinda crazy.

One day I will write a more detailed post about everything that I disliked about the path they chose in Last Evolution Kizuna, but I was thinking today of how they basically wrote themselves into a dead end but expect us to take a positive outcome out of it.

Like, the ending is very bitter with one pinch of sweet. It is meant to make us sad, and just a little hopeful that they still keep the 02 ending canon so we can assume that eventually all Chosen Children (or Adults) reconnect with their Digimon partners.

But I’m thinking, even if you want to ignore tri. (which to me it felt like they were deliberately ignoring everything about it with the exclusion of one (1) mention of Meiko and Meicoomon) where the whole plot happens because a former Chosen Child wanted to reconnect with her Digimon, the same thing happens in Kizuna. Sure the separation of Taichi and Yamato from Agumon and Gabumon was “fated” but Menoa’s actions were what kicked the plot forward.

And so, with what Kizuna sets up, more and more Chosen Children will be separated from their Digimon partners until something happens off-screen and they reach the 02 ending (which to me, doing that off-screen is a huge cop-out but that’s a point for another post plus we’ve still got the upcoming 02 movie to watch so). So I’m asking, how are we supposed to think that absolutely none of those people will go to such extremes like Menoa did? Yeah, maybe we don’t want to assume that of the beloved twelve children from Adventure and 02, but there’s way more Chosen people out there... so are we supposed to assume things go well afterwards?

If anything, in Kizuna, only Taichi and Yamato (because of course only those two) were directly impacted by Menoa’s actions; as a proof, when Mimi and Palmon wake up from their coma, they both consider everything a dream, so I can’t be convinced anyone other than Taichi and Yamato would fully understand the consequences of going too far to be reconnected with your Digimon partner (again, tri. notwithstanding). It’s also only the original eight that are even brought up with the idea of moving forward; none of the other Chosen that were taken by Eosmon are shown to struggle with the concept, they’re just brought in the Neverland and then wake up safe in their hospital beds. Did they even understand what went on, why Eosmon was created, why she fell and why they woke up again? Will they understand what it means when the countdown ring appears on their Digivices? Will they expect and (reluctantly) accept it when their time runs out like Taichi and Yamato did?

So, with the way the topic is written and explored in the film, it doesn’t become an object lesson to that many people, so it’s bound to happen again. There’s nothing in the film to disprove this, and even if we assume that Koushiro would issue a warning among the Chosen Children network about what’s fated to happen (which again, is work we’d do off-screen in order to make the film make sense), I cannot safely assume at least one of them wouldn’t go as far to try to stop it or undo it as Menoa did.

It’s not just a mostly bitter with a bit of sweet ending the film gives. It’s so sloppy that upon closer inspection it falls apart and only fates itself to be repeated.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YELLS IN RAINBOW DIGICODE! everything is so pretty in the reboot I don’t even mind the evolution sequences anymore.

I wasn’t able to watch episode 5 and 6 until yesterday, and I’m sO HYPED for the 2020 adventure timeline now! I loved how they introduced us to some of the lore of this universe and a prophecy (the pastel rainbow + greek architecture imagery of the temple had me shaking) right away, and it’s interesting that in this incarnation our dear mons apparently have memories of a mysterious past and a war they fought in. I don’t think it’s connected to the pre-reboot timeline or kizuna or anything, fortunately. I want to see this becoming its own thing. 

Valdurmon is our big rainbow bird and so far they’ve been fulfilling the role of Gennai explaining stuff. Aldurmon is majestic. I love them. Where’s Gennai. I also love Gennai.

CONCERN. 

Seraphimon and Ophanimon did appear, though. They were alongside Cherubimon (!!!!!) and some other powerful mons I couldn’t make out (MEICOOMON?!!?)

so I think we only see six eggs because the six mons of the older kids were ‘regular’ mons who fought Devimon/Apocalymon/all the evil incarnate in the old days, and Hikari’s Tailmon and Takeru’s Patamon are the reincarnations of two of the sacred mons; namely, two of the Three Archangels. So I wonder if we’ll also meet a Lopmon? Like in Frontier. But obviously there were more than three (again: MEICOOMON?!!?), so. I have no idea —  perhaps by “Sacred Digimon,” Valdurmon meant the Three Archangels + those new ones. What kind of insane powers will Takeru and Hikari have now? Much doubt, much excitement. 

(I apologize if someone already put it like this, I haven’t gotten around to read many reviews.)

We have the little bat thingies acting like Devimon’s rings. (Edit: I meant gears, not rings. I just turned Devimon into Ken.) We have Ogremon fully operating on pissed off & existencial crisis mode, not a Leomon in sight. But I have faith. Devimon’s abs are much more defined now, and I am a pervert apparently. Sue me, he’s hot.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Mimi’s episode has been my favorite so far!!!!!!!!! Her characterization is spot on! They managed to balance out her being a little brat and extremely sweet so well. I was worried they’d go too deep too fast into the spoiled princess archetype and have her come off as way more insensitive than she is, poor kid. And GRANDPA? WE'VE BEEN BLESSED WITH MORE TACHIKAWAS?!  ;;also, Taichi and Sora immediately recognized the kindness inside her. Taichi played along with her kingdom and even called her queen, I love my boy. Then Mimi called her new supportive friends servants #72 and #73. God tier group dynamic right here.

I am living for the glitchy aesthetic of this anime. Seriously. Sometimes at the corner of the screen you can see the Digital World glitching a bit and it’s honestly so satisfying. I am pleased. 

Palmon’s data almost vanishing out of existence was less pleasant to watch, but it was pretty nonetheless. So it’s fine.

It’s amazing how Mimi and Palmon already saw I love you to each other — and don’t you think I didn’t see Sora blushing at the open display of affection. This had me intrigued. So far Sora has been lovely, and don’t get me wrong — she is baby —, but I’m missing my emotionally constipated girl who couldn’t stand Piyomon doting on her when they met, lmao. Hopefully, we’ll get a closer look at their relationship soon. As for Koushiro, it was so cute his little moment with Kabuterimon. “Oh I think I came to this world to meet you. [heart emoji]” “Sorry could you repeat that Koushiro-han.” “REPEAT WHAT?”  

Next time (tomorrow!) THAT BOI IS JYOU KIDO! Personally, I think Jyou and Gomamon’s dynamic is the more unique of the group — you gotta get the teasing and the banter right! —, and my favorite, so it’s the one I’m anticipating the most (alongside Hikari and Tailmon’s, because that’s just who I am, fundamentally, as a person.) Since Yamato already debuted and Gabumon evolved pre-canon, I’m assuming we’ll see him again right after Jyou, but instead of a shinka episode we’ll probably get some backstory? [eyes emoji]

Now that I’m too attached, I’m officially moving on from calling the reboot Digimon Adventure Psi. I’ll be using Digimon Adventure 2020 (and #da: spoilers) from now on. Thank you for coming to my DigiTalk.

Notes: After the ‘To Sora’ short came out I knew I would end up writing something like this. So, I did.

“I didn’t think you would come,” she had seen him enter the exhibition a few minutes back, but she had been so busy presenting her flower arrangement that she hadn’t been able to say hi.

“I know how much this means to you… and to your mom.” He was wearing his leather jacket casually on one shoulder, it was almost annoying how casually good-looking Yamato was. “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

“But you guys have been fighting-“

“Again, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” he smiled, one of those Ishida smiles Sora liked to think were exclusive for her. “You haven’t been replying to the group chat.”

Sora broke the eye contact, pretending to clean a spot on the table that was perfectly fine.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she lied, and Sora was the worst liar. Everyone else could give a white lie here or there, but to Sora it was physically impossible to lie. It gave her stomachaches, and they were just starting.

“You know you can talk to me, right?” and she knew he was right, but it still felt like a thousand cuts in her heart. Sure, she had talked to Mimi about her intentions on not wanting to fight anymore, but it had been through the phone, it wasn’t the same.

And she didn’t want to take credit out of Piyomon, her partner had been her biggest support for years, and knowing that she was okay with her decision about not joining the fights anymore made her feel in peace.

But she hadn’t faced any of her friends, and that included Yamato right there. She was being gullible to believe they wouldn’t notice her sudden disappearance from the group chat, she wasn’t the biggest chatter, but she placed a thumbs up here and there. They would notice she was ignoring them sooner or later.

And here was the sooner, with beautiful blue eyes, wondering what was occupying her mind. She hadn’t even replied when her eyes started filling up with tears and Yamato could only take her backstage from the exhibition, he knew Sora well enough to know how much she hated attention. They would be better talking somewhere they could be alone.

He held her, letting her cry as much as she needed. If Yamato knew something about Sora was how much she liked being in silence, in a safe space where she didn’t feel like she was being judged. Yamato could sometimes be distracted, but he had noticed Sora had been distant-- not only from the group chat, but ever since the problems with the Digital World had begun… again.

When the tears had finally het her talk, she looked up at him. There was something about Yamato’s eyes that on first sight could seem intimidating, but when you got to know them, they were the warmest thing she could think of. They made her feel safe, they made her feel understood.

“I don’t think I want to fight anymore…” it was a mere whisper, but clear enough so she didn’t have to repeat it. Sora was surprised with herself; she didn’t expect to cut the drama and go straight to how she felt. “After everything that happened with Meicoomon I don’t think I’m able to keep fighting I’m just…”

She held Yamato’s wrists tightly, her legs felt weaker than moments before. She remembered being hit against the hard and cold ice by Machinedramon, she remembered thinking she was about to die. She had been in many fights before, but never had she felt that helpless. Five years had passed, and even if she had gone with a therapist, rekindled with tennis and done everything she was supposed to do to get over a trauma, it hadn’t felt real until the Digimon attacks restarted.

“I’m so tired.” Yamato could see the pain in Sora’s eyes. They (the rest of the Chosen Children) didn’t really talk about the traumas from the battles, it was like the elephant in the room, and it hurt to see her suffering like that. He held her again, and even if Sora wasn’t crying anymore —tears may have left her body—, it was nice to feel her breathing against his chest, her heart beating alongside his.

“You don’t have to fight if you don’t want to.” He stated after a few more minutes in silence, he felt her nodding. “We understand… I understand,” Sora lifted her gaze to meet his again, and with his thumb, Yamato cleaned up the last tears running through her cheek.

“Do you want to see my flower arrangement?” She said with innocence, after she had calmed down. Yamato couldn’t hide his sudden blush. He nodded.

Six flowers in the colors of everyone’s crests. Yamato smiled, widely, the kind of smiles he only had once in a full moon. He understood Sora had stepped down from fighting, but she hadn’t stepped down from being a Chosen Children. That would always be in her heart.

Digimon Adventure Tri: Past 01

Takaishi Takeru mentioned in a letter to Mochizuki that Daisuke and the others were healing. What Takeru neglected to mention to the bereaved Chosen Child were the circumstances on "why" they were healing in the first place.

I wanted to continue the supposed things that were left out of Tri. Tri was just half a season of Digimon when it should've have had more than 50 episodes, whereas Tri only had 26 episodes over the course of the Movie series.

I will use the Japanese terms used rather than the English ones, apart from a few exceptions.

Taichi, Sora and Yamato decided to visit the chosen children that Nishijima-sensei saved alongside Taichi.

They knew Takeru and Hikari had already visited a few times, Koushiro and Mimi had visited before the latter's flight to America.

The only chosen child the four got to see on a daily basis was Jyou, but even that was limited to visiting and checking on them.

"Really senpai there's nothing to apologize." Daisuke dismissed Taichi's apology as if nothing happened. "We lied to you about everything, it's no wonder why you didn't notice that we were missing." He sheepishly scratched the back of his head.

"S-still Daisuke-kun…" Sora trailed off, looking away.

"Don't worry Sora-san." Miyako chimed in. "No hard feelings."

"If you're sure…" Yamato trailed off.

"Takeru-san and Hikari-san already came together a few times." Iori spoke up. "Like we told them, there's nothing to forgive." He shook his head.

"We walked into that fight on our own." Miyako supplied.

"Not necessarily." Ken shook his head. "Himekawa-san was the one who gave us that tip."

"She's not here, is she?" Daisuke's looked around the room.

The Motomiya's words got the other resting children in the hospital to look around for the woman named Himekawa.

The older chosen children looked at each other before staring at their bedridden friends in both worry and pity. They remembered how antsy they got after their first adventure in the Digital World. It was almost sad to see them this antsy when their first adventure, or at least Daisuke's Miyako's and Iori's first adventures were safe, being able to return home at the end of the day.

Another thing the elder chosen children couldn't help but notice that among the four children, Daisuke was the one who was the most vigilant. They wondered what Daisuke and the others experienced when they were trapped in the Digital World.

"No, she's not here." Yamato shook his head. "She's missing for months now."

"She's most likely dead according to Nishijima-sensei." Taichi supplied.

"You know Nishijima-a-ow." Miyako yelled but was cut off from the pain on her abdomen.

"Easy Miyako." Sora was immediately on the younger girl's side. "You're still recovering from whatever injured all of you."

"Question still stands Taichi-senpai." Daisuke voiced out. "Don't trust Nishijima-san." He warned. "He's working for Himekawa-san."

The older chosen children narrowed their eyes at the warning. They knew Nishijima reported to Himekawa.

They also knew of his sacrifice to save Taichi and the kids in front of them.

"Nishijima-sensei is dead Daisuke." Taichi told the younger children somberly.

"Taichi…" Yamato trailed off.

"H-he's dead?" Iori narrowed his eyes at the revelation.

"Both Himekawa-san and Nishijima-san are dead?" Ken questioned the three chosen children in the room.

"Jury is still out for Himekawa-san." Taichi answered the question. "She went to the digital world after it was rebooted."

"H-how?" Miyako voiced out. "She…"

"They were also fellow Chosen Children." Taichi sighed. "Himekawa-san and Nishijima-sensei were the chosen children before our group was sent to the Digital World."

"A fellow chosen child…" Daisuke trailed off.

"They lost their partners didn't they?" Ken questioned.

"Only Himekawa-san lost her'." Taichi responded. "At least that's what Nishijima-sensei told me."

"How did Nishijima-san die?" Miyako asked.

"He died saving you guys." Yamato looked at Taichi.

Taichi was clenching his fists remembering Nishijima-sensei's sacrifice to save him and the children bedridden before him.

He was willing to find ways to save the both of them while saving Daisuke and the others.

In the end, Nishijima-sensei chose to sacrifice his life for the sake of the children, Taichi included.

"In any case how did you meet Nishijima-sensei in the first place?" Sora asked. "We weren't able to meet them until the infected Digimon started appearing here."

Ken and Daisuke looked at each other. They really weren't sure how they met Himekawa-san in the first place.

"We don't know." Daisuke admitted. "All I know was that Himekawa-san approached Ken and I."

"She immediately told us that the Digital World was in danger and we needed to save it." Ken supplied.

"That was when Iori and I were told of the dangers." Miyako added.

"We thought it was suspicious that she insisted on not contacting you guys, they even stressed out not telling Takeru-san and Hikari-san."

"Our task was merely to gather information." Ken continued. "We reported everything back either to Himekawa-san or Nishijima-san."

"Himekawa-san was also the one who suggested that we lie to you guys." Daisuke supplied. "We were transferred to different schools across Japan." He added. "Those papers are legit, we were exchange students into four different public schools."

"We attended for a while, before Himekawa-san got us that tip."

"If you were transfer students, how come no one was at Ichijouji-kun's residence?" Sora asked. "Someone used Ichijouji-kun's Digimon Emperor persona to fight against us."

"That Dark Gennai is really twisted." Daisuke hissed.

"Okay Taichi, Sora, Yamato visiting hours are over." Jyou announced his arrival as he went inside the room.

"It's that late already?" Sora questioned as she looked at her phone.

"But…" Taichi trailed off.

"Don't worry about us senpai." Daisuke grinned. "We'll be fine." He assured his senior. "Jyou-san's here to take care of us."

"They're in good hands Taichi." Jyou nodded.

"Tell us if something comes up alright." Yamato ordered.

"Will do." Miyako nodded.

Days has passed before the four chosen children were given clearance to be released. During those days, their respective families arrived back to Odaiba aborting their search for their children.

The tearful reunion between families really warms the heart of the people who witnessed the event.

Apparently Daisuke's parents were told that he was missing in the prefecture of the school he was transferred to. The Motomiyas decided to search for him once they haven't heard of police who were investigating his disappearance.

The same thing happened with the Hidas, Inoues and Ichijoujis. In fact the Ichijoujis were the first group to search for their missing child.

The Younger Chosen Children were having their meeting inside the middle school Daisuke, Miyako, Takeru and Hikari were attending. It was the only venue were the most of the younger chosen children frequent, with Ken still living in Tamachi and Iori still attending Elementary school.

The only reason Ken was able to attend any and all Chosen Children meetings was through the assurances of Hikari and Daisuke.

"That's everything they told us." Daisuke sighed.

"I thought it was weird how Ichijouji-kun's parents weren't at their residence especially when their son was missing again." Hikari nodded.

"I've never seen my siblings cry for me before." Miyako admitted. "It was nice, but I wished it didn't have to be in that context."

"Same here." Daisuke nodded. "I didn't think they would worry so much about me."

"Of course they would!" Takeru exclaimed. "They're your family."

Daisuke simply shrugged the exclamation while Miyako nodded.

Daisuke, Ken and Miyako were re-enrolled back into their respective middle schools. They were given placement exams to see if they were to repeat their year for the number of days they were absent or will be eligible for promotion once the current academic year concluded.

Iori was also given the same treatment at his school for the same reasons.

Daisuke and Ken were in their 2nd year of Middle School, alongside Takeru and Hikari while Miyako was in her last year of Middle School. Iori on the other hand was in his last year of Elementary School.

Part of the reason for this treatment was the cover story the government cooked up for their absences: Being kidnapped and held for several weeks before being able to escape from their kidnappers clutches.

"Sora-san and Piyomon can reach Ultimate level." Takeru broke the news. "Every one of us actually"

"We get to see Seraphimon and Magnadramon again!" Miyako grinned. "Always wondered why they didn't appear in that wish realm when we were fighting BelialVamdemon."

"That's great!" Daisuke's face lit up. "When Alphamon attacks again, we may actually have a fighting chance."

"You think he'll attack again?" Iori questioned.

"Remember Yggdrasil's plans?" Daisuke responded. "He and Dark Gennai will stop at nothing to find a way to put Yggdrasil's plans in motion." He looked at the window. "Alphamon is one of Yggdrasil's most loyal subjects."

"Alphamon's attack in the real world caused a lot of damage." Hikari offered sadly. "Is there no way to appeal to him?"

"Yggdrasil wants to destroy the human world." Ken offered. "To destroy all humans."

"Their plan to use Meicoomon failed." Takeru objected.

"Demon." Ken held unto Daisuke tightly. "Dagomon."

Hikari held unto Takeru's arms as tight as she could upon hearing the latter's name.

"Dark Gennai and Yggdrasil had many plans in place in case other plans failed." Daisuke offered somberly.

"Using Meicoomon was merely one of them." Miyako interjected.

On the same day, after the meeting between the younger chosen children concluded, Hikari found herself in her brother's bedroom.

Taichi laid on the floor as he read one of his manga books.

"Daisuke won't join us tomorrow." Hikari reported as she sat on her brother's bed.

"Why?" Taichi asked, curious, he closed the book and went on a sitting position.

Daisuke never missed a meeting between the twelve of them. The one time he voluntarily missed a meeting was when he went to Tamachi and assist Ken years ago.

"He didn't say." Hikari answered honestly.

Over the course of a few days, Hikari noticed a lot of things different from her friends. They were all very different. She could understand to some extent given their experience, she was still skittish around beaches.

She just can't place if this was a good different or a bad one.

"Do you think something's wrong nii-chan?" She questioned her older brother.

"Give them time Hikari." Taichi sat beside her sister. "They went through a lot." He held his sister. "An experience where we weren't there to support them."

"Why didn't we notice that they were missing nii-chan?" Hikari returned her brother's gesture.

"We've all been asking the same questions." Taichi admitted. "I can't imagine what Daisuke's and Miyakos older siblings were feeling when the two of them were missing." He sighed. "I don't what I'd do if you end up missing."

"Probably start fight with Yamato-san." Hikari giggled.

"Are we really that bad Hikari?"

"No." Hikari giggled once more.

"To be honest, I don't think Yamato does either." Taichi hummed.

Taichi really didn't know what he'd do if something were to happen to his younger sister. Had he known that Hikari was once again possessed by Homeostasis for the first time since their first adventure, he would've panicked until either Sora or Yamato would snap him out of it.

Digimon Adventure Tri

Digimon Tri was fairly good at slice of life shenanigans (and ship baiting, lol that ship-baiting was way more enjoyable than it had any right to be), but really really bad at actual plot. Basically, Taichi and Jou were the only ones with good arcs, and everyone else was static or contrived drama. Mei and Meicoomon offered neutral (slice of life/ship-baiting shenanigans) to negative value (actual plot). I mean, some of the arcs were promising, and then they just threw them all into the trash to stuff more meaningless action in. All of the rookie/baby digimon shenanigans were GREAT, and I would watch 26 episodes of just that shit with zero actual plot stakes. (And to be clear, this included a good deal of proxy ship-baiting, lol) The writers clearly had a lot of affection for these characters and relationships, but just couldn't figure out a broader plot that serviced any of that except for Taichi, and even the catharsis and effects of that arc were mostly left unshown. (But also, they didn't give a shit about 02 lmao) Hell, I would have taken more reheated not-really character arcs rehashing the old series, than how the entire cast become utterly impotent in the second half, so it was just 2 entire movies / 9 episodes of them failing, and failing, and failing, and failing, and yet the storytellers trying to tell us things were actually progressing. (I mean, Mei/coomon were impotent the entire series, so) Worse, the personalities that were very distinct in the earlier movies all got washed out into a morass of generic "worrying." Apparently, who the DigiDestined are in extremis...is boring. Also, the 26-episode format was horrible, they should have stuck with keeping them in movie chunks. You had hella awkward breaks and catch-up repeat footage, but worse, the big climactic music moments were ruined because the OP had JUST played like 2 minutes before.

Thoughts, feelings, theories and assessments (esp. the 02 kids and adventure kids’ relationships) before the premiere of the final chapter

This sort of morphed from a short thread on Twitter with some friends a while back and it was as if a lightbulb went off in my head. There might be some holes and here and there, but hear me out (It’s long. I’m so sorry. Go make tea, a snack and come back and read)

First: If you haven’t already, rewatch the first 5 movies. It’s well worth it.

This post contains spoilers for Parts 1 through 5. No spoilers from the advance screenings of Part 6 are in this post. (I’m a spoilerphobe with tri of perhaps the highest order)

So here’s a few things:

All 12 of them seeing each other at once was not a regular thing. It wasn’t in 02 for the Adventure kids, that’s for sure and each episode showed this early on.

Them not being in daily communication for days or weeks was probably normal too given how things may have become for them as Chosen. They had no reason to worry--there was peace. Everyone was busy and had their lives

Whatever the 02 kids encountered prior to Part 1, it may have occurred swiftly. In other theories I’ve tried to come up with, this is one thing I think is a strong possibility. There’s been theories floated that maybe Maki deliberately sent them there because they were the active team, but what if in an emergency with no way to directly communicate, in desperation the 02 kids were sucked into the situation out of a sense of  duty and urgency?

Say in an emergency, Gennai (good) urgently tries to get a hold of the Chosen--anyone they can get--and they discover that communications have been hampered. They try and try and get a hold of the 02 kids first. Not all at once, but maybe somehow Ken, Daisuke, Iori and Miyako were able to link up. Maybe even Iori and Miyako suggested they try and get Takeru and Hikari, but they can't--time is of the essence and their help is needed post haste so they leave...and end up in an unwinnable situation.

While faced with this, the kids try to message for help as one by one--Imperialdramon, Hawkmon and Armadimon’s evolutions--are taken out, but they realize their message can't get through much like how Takeru's D-Terminal couldn't send messages in Part 4. (Maybe related: Koushiro notes he can’t get a hold of Gennai in Part 4) They're stuck with no way out nor way to call home and before they can run and seek shelter, they're all taken out (image of the final panning shot)

Due to the state of their relationship and not being in constant communication with one another, their “non-responsiveness” hasn't raised flags yet given the timeline of the films and ever-evolving and rapidly changing priorities. It could be in Part 6, albeit a bit late, they will realize they need them and *thats* when things click. I’ll concede that there is a bit of explaining to do on this point whether it’s a friendship question, or that “External Forces” (Homeostasis, the Agency, Mysterious Man, the World/Digital World) are at play.

The 02 kids are missing because of an event out of their control that we can see from the opening act of Part 1: Reunion.

What happened before that dramatic moment is where my theory comes in.

We know from Takeru in Reunion that the Digital Gate has been closed for a while and even though the Adv kids are in the Digital World right now, they got there through unconventional means which bypassed that block. Let’s assume that when the Digital Gate closed, for whatever reason, it was after a period of extended peace in the Digital World--Gennai (the real one) decided that they should let him and the Agents take care of fixing it and let them relax. After all, they had defeated BelialVandemon and Oikawa became an extra barrier for the safety of the Digital World, there wasn’t any need to be worried.

Over time, maybe during this peace, the 02 kids and Adv kids find themselves in a kind of “retirement” or hiatus from their duties as Chosen. They’re not rushing to intercept trouble or prevent anyone from taking over the Digital World or being summoned by the Sovereign Digimon to reinforce the barrier between the Worlds so they all aren’t really needed at the time.

It’s very in-character for Gennai to tell the kids to take it easy. I could see him not having any reason to be concerned. “We don’t get together as much as we used to anymore”

I strongly believe Koushiro’s line in Part 1 wasn’t just a cute reference to Our War Game--where they were hampered by the fact that they could not communicate to assemble everyone, handicapping them at the start versus Diablomon--but actually a comment on the current state of their relationship between the 12 of them.

Perhaps in a similar way to Our War Game, the 2nd original film, the kids slowly settle into “normal” routines and “normal” lifestyles as Jr and Sr High School students. Perhaps as a result of this state, the Adventure kids and 02 kids aren’t really communicating or seeing each other as much--not because they’re no longer friends, but simply because there is no reason to. They’re not having hush-hush meetings in the computer lab nor strategizing at Koushiro’s apartment over the latest Digital World developments. They drift apart somewhat, but, they’re still in touch. Life is good for all involved from 2003 onward.

Joe and Miyako being in their respective final years of High School and Jr High are likely becoming consumed by their studies (but Joe isn’t quite at the stage we see him at in Part 2) everyone is leading their own lives waiting until the day they’re called again (though not expecting). Rewatching Part 1, you can see that Taichi wasn’t terribly aware of Yamato’s band activities. It’s played as a normal conversation for laughs, but I’d say it’s another way the story demonstrates how little they hang out compared to before.

I think we can safely assume their relationship is in the state it’s in is close but not I-know-every-detail-of-your-day level. After the events of Part 2: Decision/Determination, Hikari and Takeru go and try to find out what’s going on--no one answers at the Ichijouji residence (Empty? They could be out for the day (or town) and Ken is busy himself given they may not be aware of his daily activities), Takeru fires off a text to Daisuke and presumably the others. Had things not escalated as much in Part 3, they probably would’ve had more time to sleuth around and investigate and take notice of the flags, but then the infection and Meicrackmon took priority. Had this had their undivided attention, I’m sure the story would have had them speak to the older Chosen to note they couldn’t get a hold of the other four. 

(What I also find curiously interesting is that Daigo is also aware in Part 3 that the 02 kids are missing. Whatever his implication is in the events that led to their status, it’ll be interesting to learn the extent of what he knew. Given how crushed he was by the fact Maki was lying point blank to Yamato and to himself, I wouldn’t be surprised at this point if all he knew was they had lost communication with them, not that they had been ambushed)

Closed Gate = Closed Communications

We know from a few things in Part 3: Confession that, granted we are seeing a post-reboot DW, communication between the Digital World and Real World seems to be hampered as seen when Takeru tries to use his D-Terminal to message Maki but the message doesn’t go through. We could chalk this up to it being a reboot bug, but what if this “lack of reception” had been around the time when the Gates remained closed? Now wouldn’t that cause problems if any of them made it into the Digital in an emergency through unconventional means but had no ability to communicate back for help? If this had been the case, neither of them would know this was a problem. Keep this point in mind.

Something occurs suddenly in the Digital World. Maybe only the 02 kids, or only Daisuke, Iori, Miyako and Ken, are able to get to a Gate. They get there, try to get a handle on the situation they’re facing only to be up against something they couldn’t fathom even keeping at bay. Maybe the Gate was closed,(maybe those screens we see in the canyon in Part 4 were Gates that were out of service) so somehow they go in through an unconventional method, but when they get there and things escalate too quickly. Even though they may have sent messages for help...maybe they were never able to send at all.

What also occurred to me is that Meicoomon’s nature distorts with digital communications. Would its existence in the Digital World have begun a slow corrosion of digital infrastructure there? (That is: The Gate, the D3s’ Gate opening abilities, D-Terminal/Digital communication between the Real and Digital World) We can also see from Part 3 onwards that access to the Digital World is currently only being done through the distortions.

The Role of  the 02 Kids in the Final Film

Difficult to pin, but I have confidence (blind?) that we are not in for a repeat of the role of the Adventure kids during the events of Movie 3 (Hurricane Touchdown), granted there are similarities to tri.: Missing kids, a tamer with the burden of caring for a Digimon partner gone berserk who harms/kidnaps one team. In fact, I truly believe that Miyako, Daisuke, Iori and Ken are key to unlocking Omegamon Merciful Mode, like how Imperialdramon Paladin Mode was unlocked by a sacrifice, of sorts, by a heavily damaged Omegamon in Movie 4, Diablomon Strikes Back. Maybe Imperialdramon FM will reappear and sacrifice part of itself to unlock Merciful Mode, then all the kids will unlock or power the new blade it wields.

I am also Team They Will Speak (or Some Will Speak) and not Team Brief Cameo. ;;;;;

Final comment -- Regarding one scene from Part 1:

This might be random but, hear me out--Much of the thinking surrounding this opening shot with Taichi is that he was maybe feeling guilty for something, but what if it was nostalgia? Koushiro did mention that they all don’t get together or talk much anymore.

What if not only that, but what of Taichi’s scene --when coupled with his vague comment to Daigo (as teacher) about going to see some friends often but not anymore--wasn’t just about the Digimon, but just...everyone? The other Adventure kids and the 02 kids included. Peacetime and an unexpectedly long one without their Digimon and without being wound up in something with his friends….what does one do but reflect on “happier” times when in times of trouble, they were with their friends almost every day?

Everyone’s going on growing up and here he is struck with a strong sense of wanting to return to the “Good ol days” with everyone, maybe. It’s probably possible he believes that going back to that would assuage his worries a little about changes..

We’ll see what happens in the final chapter of this wonderful series on Saturday!

Some Sorato & Meichi speculation

I was thinking about this during my commute so I thought I’d write about it to clear my mind.

First things first, I haven’t read any spoilers. I don’t want any spoilers. Do not tell me any spoilers, even if you think it’s insignificant, and even if it’s just your reaction to spoilers. That also counts as a spoiler! 

Part of the fun of Tri for me is that I am often REALLY BAD at predicting things because I way overthink it! So if you tell me spoilers, then that ruins a big part of my enjoyment.

What I have seen is the new official arts and the most recent trailer, although that trailer feels like a while ago.

Anyway, here are some thoughts:

Sorato

I think that the main Sorato bonding moment will be that Sora comforts Yamato about how much he misses Taichi. She'll say something along the lines of, “I miss him too, and I’m here for you, and we can do this together. That’s what Taichi would have wanted.” Yamato is crying over the goggles and then Sora joins him in holding the goggles. Yamato probably feels a little bit better.

It’s not the main Sorato scene that I want to happen at the end of Tri. What I want is the reverse: a moment in which Yamato comforts Sora. A moment that is similar to “If she wants to cry, then let her” or the Dark Cave scene, in which Yamato shows that he supports our selfless heroine even when she feels selfish and bad.

But I’m not counting on a scene where Yamato supports Sora, because Sora already wrapped up her character arc in Loss, while Yamato still needs to grow. Additionally, the development for Yamato’s relationship with Taichi has been very strong for the past five movies, and the development for Sora’s relationship with Taichi has not been as strong. So within the Tri narrative, it’s more emotional to prioritize showing how Yamato misses Taichi, and how Yamato finds it hard to fill Taichi’s shoes.

I think that the main question for Yamato’s character at the end of Tri will be, “Can he stand on his own without Taichi?” and the answer will be “Yes, with his friends’ help, #crestoffriendship.”

I don’t think that Our Future will give a detailed answer the question of “Why do Sora and Yamato make a good couple?” Because Tri hasn’t asked that question. Instead, from the beginning, Tri has been asking the question “Will Sora choose Taichi or Yamato?” This has been the main Sora-romance-question since the “soccer game vs. band concert” dilemma in Reunion. Sora didn’t get to symbolically “choose” either boy in Reunion because the Tri staff have been waiting until the final movie. Now Sora can finally make her symbolic “choice.”

If Tri had been interested in developing an answer to why Sora and Yamato make a good couple, then they could have shown Yamato as being able to comfort her during Loss. Instead, the person who is best able to comfort Sora in Loss is Meiko. Meiko is the one who observes Piyomon’s behavior, and she sympathizes with Sora because of her difficulties with her own digimon partner. In contrast to Meiko, Taichi and Yamato are presented as equals who both try and fail to understand Sora. And both boys equally get to save her life by pushing her away from harm at the same time.

The effect of Loss is then:

It wraps up Sora’s arc. She is able to solve her own issues with Piyomon. She is able to stand on her own without Taichi and Yamato. She doesn’t need their comfort in Tri.

It provides a turning point for Meiko, who starts to feel strong after her low point in Confession.

In the middle movie of Tri, it maintains the “romantic suspense” of “Which boy will Sora choose?” Because neither boy stands out. 

Anyway, this was my roundabout way of explaining why I don’t think Yamato will dramatically comfort Sora in Our Future, because that doesn’t answer the question of “Which boy will Sora choose?” or “Can Yamato stand on his own without Taichi?”

All that I’m expecting for Sorato is a simple answer to the first question -- that Sora symbolically chooses Yamato. (And I think that the Tri staff found an awfully easy way to answer that question, since one of the boys is now presumed dead, so she only has to comfort the living one.)

I’d love to be wrong on this! If Yamato ends up comforting Sora in Our Future and showing that he supports her no matter what, that’d be stellar. But I’m trying to keep my expectations as low as possible.

Meichi

I believe that a future Meichi romance will be implied, but not explicit.

I think that the smartest way to imply a Meichi future romance would be to have them parallel Sorato in some obvious way. Perhaps Sora and Yamato get a small romantic gesture -- like sharing a smile, or holding hands -- and then Meiko and Taichi get to repeat the gesture.

If they went that route, they wouldn’t have to show the epilogue. And I don’t think that we’re going to see the epilogue. I think we’ll just get a return of the narrator at the end to finish up his speech from Reunion in the beginning. But the end of Our Future would still be in 2005/2006.

In any case, the main question for Meiko and Taichi has always been “Will they or won’t they?” ever since movie 1, when they dramatically met each other’s eyes in the classroom. I think that the answer will be an implied “They will.”

Taichi “died” at the end of movie 5 but he’ll come back to life in movie 6. Meiko “died” at the end of movie 4 but she came back in movie 5. I think that Meicoomon will “die” within movie 6, but she’ll come back before the end. So that would be a trio of Meichi parallels.

Taichi is going to have to answer the question that Daigo asked him at the beginning of Reunion: What do you want to do when you grow up? He’ll finally be able to answer that and find his balance between the Digital World and the Human World.

As long as Taichi is talking about his future, I think that Meiko will be part of the conversation somehow. If Meichi doesn’t parallel a Sorato gesture, then showing Taichi and Meiko talk about “the future” is another smart way to imply a future romance. 

The question of “the future” is especially pertinent for Meiko, because she doesn’t have a canon epilogue career yet. It’s also pertinent for Meiko because both she and Meicoomon could die in Our Future if Tri gets really dark on us. The image of Meiko falling in the Our Future poster is a scary image for her. So an important question that Tri will answer is “Will Meiko live to see the epilogue like the others?”

In conclusion

Those were my Sorato Meichi thoughts of the morning!

This is all coming from the same woman who earnestly believed that the “Digimon Kaiser” in the trailer for Determination would turn out to be Jou Kido.

Let’s see how wrong I am! :P

Soooo tri. is over and I hated it! I just need some place to write down my thoughts but if you wanna read, there’s all the spoilers below.

I’m really not one to automatically hate new additions to classics and I’ve liked and defended tri. countless times when I felt it was deserved buuut a finale is special.

I get they might be teasing a continuation of tri. with the DigiVice beeping AND Toei teasing SOME new Digimon project, but honestly, it feels like they wanted us to shut up about questions we have right now that weren’t answered. It would have been enough to just have the antagonist have his scene in the end, playing with the black cube and mentioning those other evil Digimon, that’s vague foreshadowing that could have been everything or nothing. Just do that to have your *MAYBE* cliffhanger, but answer all other questions please. But quite a lot bothered me in terms of plot and aesthetics-

 -          The music’s timing was SO off the entire time. They cut the songs as they pleased and it still didn’t fit the evolution or fighting animations at all, almost always ending too early

-          What. Happened to the 02 kids now. Them finding out about Yggdrasil’s plans without Takeru and Hikari (hey Toei we get you wanted to separate them but you have to face the angel kids belong to BOTH groups, it’s unlikely the new 4 would go on dangerous missions without them since Miyako and Iori would be weak af!) or the others is at least as much, if not more, unrealistic than the original 8 never worrying/asking about them

-          Why are we always only getting ass shots of Ordinemon I’m uncomfortable as hell

-          Would it have killed them to animate shadowy figures of original Adventure scenes for ALL kids when the Digimon regained their memories, instead of just for Taichi? When I got sad about the Digimon losing their memories in the third movie, I sure as heck was NOT sad about them forgetting the events of tri. 1-3,  but of the original series! Especially important for the Tentomon, Palmon and Gomamon that only got generic reactions to their memories (“we went through hard times together!”-“those precious memories”-“I’m happy when I can be with Jou!”), they could have AT LEAST said something SPECIFIC to tri. like Patamon and Piyomon did

-          What was that instrumental ver. of butterfly during Holydramon’s evolution. Not only did it sound horrendous and less dramatic than the original that we just heard prior, it’s so out of place for the sweet gentle and mysterious Hikari too. An orchestra version would have been perfect, for her character and as a more dramatic continuation from the original

-          So that’s your build-up for the 02 epilogue? One line from Yamato about his career but what’s really difference between him suddenly saying he wants to be an astronaut where there were so signs for before whatsoever compared to the epilogue? It is just as random as before. I understand we can be pretty sure about Taichi’s kid’s mom now but honestly I hate how Sora showed no signs of liking Yamato any more than Taichi, I don’t ship anything of the triangle but now it just looks like she had to settle for Yamato because Taichi was taken. All other relationships (Takari, Jou’s unnamed girlfriend, Koumi/Mimi going back to America to marry Michael which her kid looks very much like) being as vague and hinted as before is actually something I like, at least they’re not making any less sense but instead just gave more room for speculation

 What else I liked: usage of re-vamped version of Shouri ~Zen no Theme~, parallels to the first movie especially with Meicoomon’s PW being dandan and Daigo repeating his encouraging words “dream big” that was both sweet as heck, also the dialogue between Yamato and Gabumon in the beginning

Unsure: at first I quite liked how the antagonist/Yggdrasil’s puppet, barely appearing in Ketsui, then got madder and goofier with every movie, absolutely nuts in this one, but after a while he got on my nerves

Questions: What happened to Daigo and Maki (ultimately the other 3 kids that were in their group. Side not but their characters and plotline are so underappreciated and could make a bitch-ass season themselves). What about Alphamon and Hackmon. Where are they. Why did the Digimon return (02 epilogue shows them living with the kids so when do they decide to do that lol). What was Meicoomon again (Libra, which held a fragment of Apocalymon and would have been Yggdrasil’s tool for this perfect chaos world yeah but why again this Meiko’s Dad create it? Or didn’t he? I’m confused. Side note but they could have made him a more interesting character, like Yamaki from Tamers who is also your morally gray adult character but had so much reason and dynamic to him). I might have just missed things but I’m so confused.

I would be okay with a continuation of tri. MOSTLY for the side effects it had: tons of merchandise, events, interviews, music, pretty art, all of that. If new movies also give me occassional lols and awwws like the existing six did AND  answer some of my questions, then gimme. If I could name any wish for the new project though (just hoping it’s an animation) it would be season 0 with Daigo’s group and well written bridges to the events of tri. I get that other season’s continuation (including Tamers) or adaptions (including V-Tamer) are very much desired but I think they have more room for mistakes and holes like the ones tri. suffered from, while entirely new characters that are still already very logically entangled with existing overall Digimon lore are *another* life-time chance to cover holes, one chance they had with tri. and sacrificed it for an overly complicated plot with too many inconsistent side-tracks.

Rant over, I’m sorry, I’ll watch everything Digimon Toei throws at me and they know it and that’s why my frustration will fade and I’ll probably fall in love with tri. again in a few weeks, but that’s one reason I think first thoughts after just having watched the movie are important and why I write them down. [Not long before WWII ended, she met my Grandpa.] My grandmother was one of my closest family members. When I was little (around 8 years old myself when first watching), she wholeheartedly supported my strong interest in Adventures/Digimon when I was first getting into this series, even if she didn’t know anything about it, (other than small bits I told her) even she could see how much I loved it. (Because she was one of my closest family members, she was also the one who overall learnt the most about my health. When I was, few years after discovering Adventure as a child, diagnosed Autistic and with generalized Anxiety disorder as well, she continued to support me all throughout, educated herself & our other interconnected family about my conditions, and continuously encouraged my interests and growth.)

Original Posters [Mine] commentary: I made this quick A.M.V edit a handful of days ago to this gorgeous song by Miyano, one of my favorite JPN voice actors/singers, {You may know him as: Dent[o] in JPN Pocket Monsters, Tamaki in Ouran, Rin in Free!, Tokiya in Utano*Prince-sama (where this song comes from), Konoha, Haruka & “Clearing Eyes” in Kage-Pro, among many more} mainly made with thoughts of general appreciation for this series in mind. I also made it with thoughts of my Grandmother in mind, who passed late August 2015, (yes, August). Tri had been announced, but wouldn’t yet air until November. I didn’t start much more actively blogging about Digimon until a bit later on, starting from a couple years later, because I was still heavily grieving. However, I still enjoyed reblogging Digimon posts I enjoyed to other blogs I had at the time even in the pre-Tri and early Tri years.

This was made very quickly, so it’s not perfect, has minimal editing, and the 1st Adventure portion is straight from the final battle with no editing done to it, but it fit the music well enough, so I included it as-is for now. I’ll probably re-arrange scenes if I remake it later and include much more other, varied scenes from Adventure, (for example, during end of Yamato’s portion, I was also thinking of the Yamato&Sora+Jou scene from the end of Dark Masters Arc).

(^One of my favorite Adventure scenes regardless of personal favs) But until I can edit those in, I’m just leaving this as it is. The middle portion with 02 is edited slightly more timed to music. A major Tri ending spoiler for the final battle’s result appears during the end. Kizuna is not included in here as of yet, but it may be in the future, along with Adventure 2020. All of this will probably be rearranged in a remake overall, but I’m keeping the general themeing & feel as-is for now, along with the Tri ending scenes.

EP 1:

- ok. alright. ok. good. they’re dealing with kari’s emotions now instead of just. nothing.  ok. alright. cool.  Still dont like how obscure/”artsy” they’re being with it, this is digimon not kagerou project, but ok.

- Also. I stand by tk and kari being one of the few good straight ships in digimon.  just saying.

- kari: this is my fault... me: god damn it shut up you little brat also me: god relatable ALSO me: ill take whatever display of emotions i can get

- I love how nobody believes tai is dead like.  They’re upset and worried but they’re also like “nah. he cant be. that fucking asshole just left us in our time of need” (actually only matt is the last one)

- Gabumon i would die for you also im crying and I think that’s the first time tri managed to make me fucking CRY

EP 2:

- I had thoughts but then the 02 kids happened and I entered another plane of reality.  I don’t feel real right now

- the only one I can remember is evil!gennai being a dumbass and being like “SUFFER AND SQUIRM YOU PATHETIC HUMANS AS YOU FIGHT OVER THE LAST SEAT” 1. humans are KNOWN for their ability to care for others you dumb obvious fuck and 2. is. is the entire tube going? because that tube can fit too people if they squish.  This isn’t a joke I’m serious it can.

- oh yeah also when i saw whomstever the fuck his name is (adult guy who i love but fuck names) and he was all bloodied i was like “its a cold day in hell when i see blood in digimon” (I think there was blood in an earlier ep but shh idc)

EP 3:

- didn’t nishijima start off as a fucking life coach to these kids.  What the fuck he was supposed to help them find a career not emotionally scar them by bloodily dying in front of one of them

- im realizing that the reason hackmon was always in his cloak, in the shadows, standing still is that they cannot animate him in any normal position for the life of him.  I drew him with better anatomy when i was 14 and didn’t have a tablet.  No seriously, look:

I didn’t say it wasn’t bad, you guys are just underestimating how bad the anatomy on this poor creature is.  Why cant ppl draw dracomon or hackmon correctly imma cry

- ordinemon has the best reaction faces

the best part about these two screenshots is that they literally cut one to the other, first the first one to the second one and then it cuts back to the first one.  They were really proud of these stupid ass expressions.

- I started overcoming my dissociation shock from the second episode and my hypercritical mind was analyzing the shit out of everything that happened (it is Not happy) but then evil!gennai called kari and evil goddess and idk if he’s exaggerating to make her feel bad or if she’s literally a fucking god of chaos and destruction and either way im like

she did kinda like.  Watch wizardmon die, watch tai die, watch gatomon get absorbed.  The dark ocean is just a metaphor for depression and honestly if 02 wasn’t all over the fucking place I think Kari would’ve had some pretty decent development in it.  Actually you know what, I’m using that as an angle to approach Tri at now, wish me luck bc i might actually give it more leeway now

- I’m not dissociating but I forgot to say anything again and I already forgot what happened

- Cant believe mei is fucking dead

EP 5:

- I like to imagine that Tai got there like a few minutes ago, but he was like “well damn guess yall figured it out without me.  alright ill just. see if I need to do anything” and then meicoomon was Still Bad so he waited for when she struck just to make the most badass entrance possible.  Fucking extra ass bitch

- I forgot to write anything again but uhhh I wasn’t satisfied so anyways lets just get into the Juicy Details

Originally I was actually planning to be kinder to Tri than I expected.  Was very invested during it.  ‘Round the end of the last ep I realized hmmm no this isn’t working out.  Where are the 02 kids.  You should’ve brought them in to save the day.  That would’ve been SO cool and SO fun.  Fucking cowards.

god I’m kinda tired so I’m going to address a couple things I still had problems with, note that this isn’t everything it’s just everything I felt comfortable yelling about without rewatching past eps.  Like I forgot nishijima was all bloodied and presumably died in the last part until they brought it up and I was like “????” ALSO DID THE LADY WHO WAS HIS PARTNER OR W/E KILL HERSELF WITH THE GUN SHE FOUND, I JUST REALIZED LITERALLY AS I WAS TYPING THIS THAT SHE FOUND A GUN AND THEN I THINK IT CUT TO BLACK AND I’M

anyways my problems:

1. They did joe. really dirty.  I’ll write a more proper rant on this sometime later (mostly bc charlie is MUCH better at talking about joe than I am) but basically I can tell you that his character development in the movies squandered his OG character development.  He’s basically an entirely different person.  Like Tri joe isn’t bad, besides being largely neglected (yes he has a whole half a movie to himself, no that doesn’t make up for it all), its just...not OG joe.  He’s a fine character just not the same character, and its NOT fine when you put the two together.

2. THEY DID THE 02 KIDS EVEN DIRTIER IM SO BITTER sorry you nostalgia-blind, money-hungry fucks at bandai, but the 02 cast is PART OF THE ADVENTURES UNIVERSE.  The only people who hate 02 are ones who like the characters but hate the mess of the storyline at the end, or are completely irrational and elitist about their love of the digimon series and would greatly re-evaluate their opinions if they watched the original series and 02 back to back.  They couldn’t even show them in some kind of group montage at the end??? Standing in the background when they call Mei???  Why couldn’t they call mei from a home phone also, but that’s a less important problem idc that much.  It was a cute scene besides the lack of 02 characters.  Whatever.  AND THE PROBLEM IS LIKE kari and tk?  This entire time???  Were like “oh they disappeared. oops” instead of being frantically searching for their lost friends???  Like i get tk and kari probably have fucking ptsd and can’t express any emotions because they watched important people die in front of their eyes at an incredibly young age but also 1. they didn’t address the ramifications of ptsd, so fuck that theory/excuse and 2. THAT??? WOULD ONLY MAKE THEM LOOK HARDER??? and put on a brave face as they look, but inside they’re so scared and so worried.  Not just “oh sweet, they were found/saved, theyre in the hospital but that’s fine” like WHAT theyre fucking assholes if that’s what they’d canonically do lmao.  God I am SO bitter over the ENTIRE thing with the 02 kids, it would’ve been BETTER if they were deleted from the fucking canon entirely.  Would I have still been bitter?  Yes.  But at least I wouldn’t be madder at TK and Kari too.

3. I stand 100% by the notion that Digimon is not and will never be cut out to be an adults’ franchise.  It wasn’t designed for adults, and it can’t be skewered towards adults.  These particular characters were designed for kids to relate to and find entertaining.  They do not work when placed into an adult setting.  Like, can you imagine a character like Ed from FMA going to the Digimon world?  I guess in a way that’s just Marcus but like.  Just imagine the FMA cast in Digimon Adventure.  It doesn’t work.  Digimon Tri is basically that except real.  Also Data Squad was darker than Adventure so my joke doesn’t even work.

I guess my primary point is that Tri isn’t mature enough of a setup for an adult audience.  It puts a focus on being “complex” and “philosophical” instead of working within Digimon’s constraints and making something good and adult out of that.  Like!  Digimon is a fucking TOY COMMERCIAL.  Don’t give me messages about the futility of human life.  I want bad puns and emotional characters.  That’s what Digimon has ALWAYS been, and ideally always will be.  Tri could’ve made itself more mature by dealing with the ramifications of the Digital World’s events, how it affected the kids psychologically and dealing with healing old scars.  It would’ve been a more mature take on a story we loved and would use things we loved about the story already - the fact that it took so much time exploring characters’ emotions and was surprisingly mature for the time - to make itself better.  You need to take the aspects that drew adults to the show and amplify them, not just slap on a complex story and unfunny dialogue and be like “oh this is fine, right?”

It’s not that Digimon can’t exist as an adult property, its just that if it repeats what Tri did, it’s got no merit and in my eyes the franchise is dead.  If it survives I guess I’ll be happy that people can still enjoy it but I find it unsustainable and unsatisfying to fans of the older series.  Tri is just a fuckfest of highly specific nostalgia that tries too hard to appeal to old fans without capturing what made the original series so magical, and in part thats because the original series WASN’T FOR ADULTS.  I don’t know about the Digimon Story games, bc they’re T-rated so perhaps they’re a better take on an adult Digimon story than Tri?  But you either need to make your own characters and lore specifically for an adult-oriented Digimon season, or perish.  Also, please make it a series and not a group of movies.  Getting four eps every 6-9 months was hell.

I stand by saying Appmon is a more faithful Digimon season than Tri to Digimon’s original spirit.  I believe it holds more potential for success than Tri and better embodies the spirit of the older Digimon seasons.  It’s dumb, its corny, it has horrible puns, but I LOVE it because it also has a deep dark story and emotional moments.  If you dislike Tri and you agree with things I said that make it unlikeable, I highly recommend giving Appmon a chance - if you watch a few episodes and think “oh yeah, I guess this is decent” you’re going to like it.  It’s everything Digimon has always been and hopefully always will be, just with a different concept.  And hopefully the end of the series doesn’t leave a sour taste in my mouth and I have to redact this statement haha since I’m not done with it yet, but I’ve heard good things about it so I’m hoping not so.

Overall, if you watch Tri, don’t get your hopes up.  It resolves everything okay-ish but it’s a pretty forgettable anime on its own and simply doesn’t work as part of the Digimon franchise.

I am, however, pretty interested in what evil!gennai said at the end about Diaboromon and Daemon.  It raises interesting questions about the timeline too.  We know Daemon is in the dark ocean, so perhaps that’s a hint at a future project?  (They did confirm a future project btw, in conjunction with tri being over)  But what about Diaboromon?  I dont believe that Our War Game (I think thats what its called?) took place after Tri, based on the outfits and ages and stuff, but I also don’t remember the movies that well.  Could Diaboromon still be out there too?  It’s interesting.

However, because of the lackluster performance of Tri, I don’t have my hopes up and I really hope that this “next project” goes in a different direction.  Although I guess if they include the 02 kids, I’ll be somewhat less salty...

Side note, did they ever explain why the gennais went evil?  Like ?  That’s a pretty important thing.  The gennais helped SAVE the human world in 02.  And I get that apparently Tri is ignoring 02′s ending but still.  It’s shitty, because Gennai was still a good guy in the original too (and also they cant just keep is younger look and act like 02 never happened)  MAYBE its something I missed but I dont think so.  God there’s just.  So much wrong with Tri.  I’m very displeased and very bitter and I wanna get back to Appmon asap.

It’s got good moments, its got bad moments, I dont know, I don’t care.  There’s nothing wrong with you if you like it, there’s nothing wrong with you if you don’t, and there’s nothing wrong with you if you flip flop and are split like me.  I just wish Tri fulfilled its potential instead of becoming a boring mess.
