Welcome to the book “Responsive Layouts: Flex, Grid and Multi-Column” In this book I explain the three best-known responsive layouts: the Flexbox, the Grid and the Multi-Column layout. Oh wow, look at that! YET ANOTHER post urging you to make a webbed site! What a completely new thing that people haven't made a thousand masterposts for already!!
• Making a website might look scary. It is Not.
At first, I too thought making a website was too much work. It really isn't! It turns out that all you need is
an HTML file,
a web hosting service and
w3schools tutorials,
and that's about it!
This post will point you towards these resources, and others I found useful while figuring out how to make a website.
• VERY QUICK EXPLANATIONS:
What's HTML and CSS?
HTML is the content of your webpage, the skeleton of it. What shows up in a webpage is what's written in the HTML file!
CSS is the way the HTML is styled; the colour of the background and the letters, the size of elements, the font, all that!
Do I absolutely NEED JavaScript for a website?
Not at all! You don't need to worry about learning it before getting started.
• What do I make a website for? What do I put in there?
ANYTHING AND ALMOST EVERYTHING. Here's some ideas for pages from a post of mine were I was very normal about websites:
You can make a page that's only pictures of your pets.
You can make an interactive adventure.
You can make your own academic blog full of your own essays or articles.
You can just post a ton of art or make a full music page.
You can make a blog and infodump eternally, give book reccs and reviews. You can host a thousand virtual pets and nothing else.
Upload entire books in a single html file. Make a wikipedia for your ocs. Make a fake site for a random fictional place (restaurant, hotel, whatever). You can make a thousand fanpages/shrines about your favorite media. You can upload your own webcomic and make it all like a fancy website and shit.
I could keep going but, for the sake of "brevity", I won't.

widowbase v3 and v4
Whooboi, there is a lot of discourse going on right now about JCINK coders. Perfect time for me to update some base skins!
For those who just want to streamline their coding process, I have updated my widowbase v3 to include a day/night theme toggle and made a few responsive tweaks to the vertical nav and sidebar. For those looking to learn how to use CSS grid and flexbox to create responsive forum designs, I added a new base, widowbase v4. This version includes some HTML templates that have a very ugly, extremely basic, but functional fluid grid layout. These templates also incorporate hidden divs (read as, display: none) that include the PHP variables frequently used inside those respective HTML templates, so you can easily delete everything I've done and start from scratch with your own. Then just delete the hidden div when you've used everything you need. Easy peasy!
For those of you just beginning your coding journey, I wish you the best of luck! It is such a fun and rewarding hobby. You are also free to rip apart any of the codes on my preview site and cobble them back together. These experiments can be a great learning tool! You are more than welcome to use any of my free resources as a base, as long as the finished product remains free. As for my actual skin bases (or template sets specifically labeled as bases), these can be used for free or paid skins. Make money or give it away, whatever works for you, just leave the credits given to resources intact so others can find out how to accomplish the same thing!

Daily Journey : Day 3 and Day 4

Hey Everyone.
Yesterday I was without internet and then without time to post here.
DAY 3:
We learned about selectors, font, color and background, position , flexbox, grid , responsibility, pseudoclasses and animations.
And in the end we were talking about strange tastes.
UHEHUEHUE. Was cool.
+++ I didn't have any negative points that day.
DAY 4:
Yesterday we started with the teacher giving examples of grid and flex.
We did a group exercise with a figma layout.
We have received the first task for delivery.
Negative points:
It was a group of 4 to 6 but just me and two more that we talked a lot. One of them being another woman.
And today, reflecting, I understood how wrong I was in not pulling the other woman in the group in the sense of pulling into conversation. (there were 3 of us) Of course she should speak for herself, but I learned and remembered that I have to make the space more welcoming for other women.
I just got an earful from one of the support guys because I was talking about github. It was just a github project organization tip, not a git lesson. But I lowered my head, after all, if they guide me and I'm wrong, I'll deal with it.

Responsive vs. Adaptive vs. Neither of those things
Aight so. Big topic. We hear the word 'responsive' a lot when talking about web design but it's kind of a wishy washy topic for lots of people outside tech, especially if you've mostly coded while interacting with jcink. John did it really weird, with two skins- one for mobile, and one for desktop. This is actually pretty convenient because it helps distinguish two ideas. If you go to a website like youtube or even tumblr and resize your window as large as you can and as small as you can. These sites are properly responsive- the layout changes and adapts to the size of the screen. Youtube is (unsurprisingly) better at this than tumblr. It changes to use all of the available screen width at every size, pretty much no matter what. Tumblr (the dash anyway) only expands to a certain size- but it also doesn't break when you make it really small. Now go look at the base jcink skin- jcink support forums for instance. If you look at it on a phone, it'll mostly look okay, and after a certain size, will mostly look okay on desktop too. But there's this whole area between the two where things start to get janky. The fixed sizes of everything start to spill over the window size. That's an adaptive skin. Everything is a fixed size, and which layout you see depends on the type of device you're using. Adaptive sites are generally seen as outdated at this point. Almost no one is coding this way anymore. Now go to a jcink skin. Do the same thing with making your window bigger and smaller. In every skin I've ever seen, *something* will break. Text will overflow, you'll have to scroll from side to side to read a post, images will start to overlap other content. That kind of thing. Some sites will resize to a certain point, but almost none of them will do so all the way down to a mobile size, or even half of a laptop screen. This is neither adaptive nor responsive. THIS IS OKAY. I mean it's not ideal, but almost no one coding for jcink is a professional, and these are legitimately difficult things to get right. You have to be thinking about it from the start of the design process. What's going to happen to that icon when the screen gets small? What about the topic information? How are you going to keep information which looks beautiful at a desktop size looking good at tablet and phone sizes? It's legitimately difficult, and if you're not building with that in mind from the start it's a non-trivial task to make an unresponsive skin responsive. If you want to start thinking about these things, I'd recommend reading about media query breakpoints. For jcink, I think it's fair to code for desktop first (usually it's mobile first today) because people using a jcink site will usually want to be typing in it somewhere. Anecdotally, I think even people who post on mobile usually are writing in a notes app first. My skin worked really well at a 600px breakpoint, but other skins might need different figures. That's okay! As long as you can identify (maybe two) places where your views start to breakdown and have consistent behavior in your css for those breakpoints, you should be fine. I think it's good practice to know what you want your mobile version to look like, and code at least the skeleton of both views as you go, so you don't back yourself into corners. That's already a lot of text, so I'll stop there. I'll follow this up with a few different ways you can approach responsive design beyond breakpoints- grid, flexbox, and percentage based css. I can't really effectively teach these things on tumblr, but I can talk about the pros and cons of each approach so you can start looking into the things that seem like they might fit your use case.

It's been a while, huh? I've been a bit busy recently with job-hunting, and my RP site recently moved to a new board, so there's been a lot to do there that's held me up on the coding front. When I was finally able to return to coding a week ago, I didn't really have the inspiration to keep coding my previous WIP, the "Drops of Darkness" skin.
But - my old board now isn't being used, and has an entirely new skin, which means the old skin is no longer being used! So, I thought I'd polish it up and see what you guys think!

It needs.... some TLC, if I'm being honest. This one doesn't need as much overhauling as my other, older ones did but it was still coded a few *years* ago, back when I was pretty new to the concept of flexbox and grid layouts, and it was mostly duct-taped together behind the scenes with a lot of precise widths and margining that did not lend itself well to being responsive. This go-round, I'm going to fix that, and make it a lot more user friendly.
I'm also adding in some new things to this skin, such as a Dark/Light mode toggle, simpler variables, and a slightly more standardized board layout.
Since this one has been previously used, and it's mostly a passion project to get me back into coding other skins, I'm thinking I'll release this one as F2U or PWYW when I finish dusting it off and welding it back together.
