Drinking Anon here.
This is what I was talking about, the Nomiai: https://www.nomunication.jp/japans-business-drinking-culture/
I knew it was more of a Japanese business 'ideal' tradition. I was just wondering if it extended to school teachers. The idea that you "HAVE" to go drinking if invited otherwise its an affront to someone's honor.
....alright, having looked at the website, here is my critical analysis of this:
This guy, Whiskey Richard, who 'has been exploring the Tokyo cocktail scene since 2008' may have a basis for what he's saying but please keep in mind the following:
He's in Tokyo, where the drinking scene AND business is larger comparably, and it's easier to find drinking buddies and older colleagues who may want to pressure you to go
He has clearly made a business of explaining 'Japanese drinking culture'. His main site is about advertising distilleries and reviewing them. He didn't write this article only because he wanted to Share The Deep Japanese Lore with foreigners. He's angling for a specific type of feeling. A feeling that helps buy what he's selling.
With all that in mind and our reasonably angled Skeptic hat cocked (a hat you should always have on, btw, so long as it is not glued to your head) let's review the rest of it.
Does Japan have a culture of drinking with coworkers? Yes.
Are nomikai a unique event that has a specific structure different to a standard 'out with the lads for a few beers' type scenario? Yes, absolutely. It's a more structural event.
Do Japanese businessmen take advantage of a more casual environment like a bar or izakaya to suss out who is a genuine person and who might be a pain to work with?
I believe yes. This is not a far stone to throw.
Are you going to be affronting someone's 'honor' by refusing to go drinking with them?
Absolutely fucking not. And if they think so, they're a shitnugget.
It also should be noted that the author correctly writes that this is specifically a salaryman business thing rather than something that affects all areas of the workplace. He does start with 'If you're in Tokyo on business...' after all.
Sure, your business partner may invite you to go drinking with them to try to get an idea for your non-professional side. That's no different than someone inviting you to a business lunch. I think the business side of things is more important here than the alcohol element, though. The point is that if you're in a foreign country and someone invites you to join them in a social event that takes place in a traditional restaurant, turning down the invite may indicate that you're not really that invested in the relationship.
And most people will reasonably understand if you have a real excuse, or don't really drink. Especially these days. Hell, I work in a Japanese office and I get invited to nomikai and often turn the invitation down because I have an hour drive back home and no way of getting back if I'm drunk. And I've never gotten flack for it, nor has anyone ever suggested I've dishonored them for it. If I was seeking new employment and was invited out for drinks, I might try to make that happen, if only to satisfy the social request to meet up. ...I also enjoy a drink every now and then.
Like I said, the article in question isn't necessarily wrong... but I think it goes a little too hard, digesting every single detail and milking it for all the 'mysticism' it's got instead of presenting it through a reasonably comparable lens of Western drinking culture.
All I'm saying is... look if I had a potluck catering company and I needed to sell my stuff to Japanese people in the US, you bet your ass I'd make a site about how Sacred the potluck is to the Americans and how important it is to bring The Correct Thing. So I respect the hustle. But I think anything about The Complete and Utter Uniqueness of Japan should be taken with a grain of salt.

Now that Kelli has been gone for a bit, I feel like I can get this off my chest: Wolf Productions done fucked up.
Not for the first time, and not right from square one. But gosh, what a waste.
Kelli Giddish's Rollins was the only female character with the depth and acting chops behind her on the show since Cabot was a regular. She showed up and was able to go toe to toe with Mariska in carrying episodes - both personally related to her character, or to cases - not to mention had electric chemistry with Benson (sexual or not, take your pick).
With all the flack that SVU had taken over the years for not having a more diverse cast in regards to sexuality, Amanda was the earliest and best opportunity they had to develop a complex, interesting storyline of an adult woman coming to her sexuality late in life. I am not even necessarily the most ravenous Rolivia Shipper out there, but I'm heartbroken that they took Amanda's character over the years into the most boring, obvious, dissatisfying of directions.
I adored Amanda's wild/problematic side. Her episodes with her fighting with Amaro, dealing with her gambling addiction, shooting her sister's ex, or going rogue undercover are my favorite episodes of basically the last 10 yrs of the show. It was so good to finally have someone in the squad who was easier to relate to in a real-world sense. Someone who went to a Big Girl job in the day, but in the off hours was a mess with a rebellious streak.
It was always my hope that they would turn around the storylines where she seemed to chase men that were purposely bad for her, into a realization that it was because she was more emotionally into women. It fits so perfectly with her childhood, her background, and had ready-made holes in existing canon where they could have written it in with ease. (Pretending to be Liv's gf at the sperm bank, the remarks she makes in the episode Plastic, questioning her second pregnancy, etc.)
Instead, they had Carisi mope after her for years, all through the seasons where she showed no interest in him. I lost 50% of my respect for Carisi when he had that sulking tantrum after she fucked the bartender in Intent (a sexist double-standard btw, which would have never flown with fans if it had been Rollins pouting bc Carisi turned her down), and the other 50% after Carisi became ADA, with the writers seeming to then write him as rather victim-blaming.
The biggest irony, in my opinion, is that Dick Wolf complains that giving the fans EO will make the show too 'soap opera-y,' when what he/they did with Rollisi and Kelli's exit was far and away the most soap opera-esque thing they ever wrote! Fuck off with that obvious shit! Oh, the once-troubled blonde who is now straight as an arrow, rides off into the sunset with the Catholic altar boy and trades her powerful feminist position for a 9-5 (don't come for me, there's nothing wrong w being a professor, that's not the point here) and her two kids. Eat all of my ass, Mr. Cis-het, White, Only-Primetime-Billionaire Wolf. 🙄***
To make matters worse, they specifically brought in a POC actress to play a bisexual character, only to write her out as fast as possible for absolutely no discernable reason!?! The utter waste of what they did with Kat Tamin is an equal travesty. Give me Kat waking up in Amanda's bed. Give me Amanda making pancakes for breakfast and Kat carrying the kids to the table. Give me anything but the bullshit, Caucasian tripe that they sold us with Rollisi!!!
*takes deep breath*
And if - IF - the powers that be couldn't think beyond the end of an average-length cock when it came to Rollins, then for the love of all that is holy: her chemistry with Sergeant Khaldun was 1) vastly more believable 2) hotter 3) more diverse as an overall cast option and 4) less cringeworthily obvious.
I have loved SVU since I was 16 yrs old, and even though I gave up watching it around The People v. Richard Wheatley (for reasons unrelated to this specific rant), I still lurk in the background and keep myself vaguely caught up. But it's getting impossible to defend a lot of the choices they have made in the last three or four years. Good talent is so hard to hang onto these days in H'wood, and Dick Wolf seems just as, if not more, determined to fuck up his show as Chris Carter was in the 90s with TXF.
Thanks for coming to my TED Rant. 😮‍💨✌🏻

Here’s a snippet of a story that I started writing back in 2022. It’s not finished, but I’m planning on finishing it sometime next year.
CH. 1 — THE NIGHT COMES DOWN
August, 1973
Strumming my pain with his fingers, singing my life with his words…
Roberta Flack’s dulcelet, euphonious voice drifted throughout the otherwise silent car. Softly, Jeremiah began to hum along to the bittersweet tune. Although he wasn’t the biggest fan of Ms. Flack, Jeremiah couldn’t help but to acknowledge the genuine emotion put into the song. Every lyric and note worked in tandem, tugging ever so gently at the listener’s heartstrings. Jeremiah felt as if he were in the place of the narrator.
I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd…
Jeremiah slowed his vehicle to a halt as the traffic light switched from its cautionary yellow to red. The young man sat back in his seat, closing his eyes and letting Ms. Flack’s soothing vocals flow through him.
Jeremiah pictured himself in the audience of a small, intimate concert. The other audience members were out of focus, but, clear as crystal, Jeremiah watched the man on stage singing his heart out. Singing…to him. The man seemed to have searched the very depths of Jeremiah’s soul, regurgitating every secret and memory to him. Jeremiah wanted to retreat from the biographical lyrics, but he couldn’t find the strength to run. His only choice was to wait for the man to finish singing.
Telling my whole life with his words…
The loud, abrupt honk! honk! from a nearby car jolted Jeremiah from the confines of his mind. He saw that the light had turned green, and started driving again.
Killing me softly with his song.
A wave of despair washed over Jeremiah once the song was over. Jeremiah wished he could replay the song on an endless loop, and lose himself in Ms. Flack’s intricate storytelling. Maybe he would buy the entire album. If Killing Me Softly With His Song could leave him spellbound, Jeremiah had faith in the rest of Ms. Flack’s musical repertoire.
After the unnecessarily long intermission, Elton John’s Daniel began playing. Daniel was Jeremiah’s favourite Elton John track, however, the young man found himself thrown off by someone walking unsteadily off in the distance. Jeremiah squinted his amber eyes, trying to make out the possibly distressed stranger. With the assistance of the awfully bright streetlight, Jeremiah was finally able to get a good look at the person as he pulled up to the curb.
Mascara streaked tears stained the man’s cheeks while the high humidity had caused his long, voluminous sea of ebony hair to become a frizzy mess. Despite the man’s dishevelled appearance, a spark of recognition came to Jeremiah almost immediately.
“What in the hell…” Jeremiah muttered under his breath. A note of concern was evident in his tone.
Jeremiah had met Giles Barker in Art History last year. He remembered staring unabashedly at the Englishman with pastel blue eyeshadow and wing tipped eyeliner. Aside from musicians like David Bowie or Little Richard, Jeremiah hadn’t yet come face to face with a man who freely and openly embraced characteristics associated with femininity.
Giles also had a habit of referring to people as “honey” or “sweetheart”. Though others may have found this form of address peculiar, especially when spoken by a man, Jeremiah thought Giles’ eccentricities made him a unique individual. He wasn’t another straight laced conformist whose entire personality was equivalent to wet cardboard. He was a magnetic and intrepid person who wasn’t afraid to be unapologetically himself.
On the occasion where words were exchanged between the two men, Jeremiah found himself taking a liking to Giles. It was strange because Jeremiah rarely liked people these days. Especially people he had only known for a short period of time.
Jeremiah lowered his window as he cruised alongside Giles. “Um, are you alright?” He asked awkwardly.
“Me? Oh! I’m just peachy. Can’t you tell, honey?” Giles retorted. His voice was uncharacteristically monotone, and his speech was noticeably slurred.
An exasperated sigh escaped Jeremiah’s lips. “Look,” he spoke. “There’s no need to be crabby. I was trying to make sure you were okay.”
Giles stopped in his tracks, turning to face Jeremiah.

Rating the Kommissar Rex/Il Commissario Rex/Hudson and Rex human partners for funsies, in chronological order. Contains spoilers, some bias, and opinions based on superficial characteristics. I will take the blame for any distorted memories I have of the shows, although I did a full rewatch last summer. (Rewatch refers to Kommissar Rex and Hudson and Rex. I could only watch Il Commissario Rex once. Well, 0.75 times. I couldn’t find some of the episodes.)
Kommissar Rex
Richard Moser: The blueprint. Not necessarily the best one in my opinion (although if you ask kid me, yes), but they modeled at least two other characters after him in the reboots. Pretty nice (although a product of his time), street smart, recently divorced, and the first few episodes where he and Rex are getting used to living together are hilarious. Moser’s dry humor was good too, also his whump scenes where great. And I appreciated the nude scenes a lot (thanks, German tv of the 90s). 8/10
Alex Brandtner: The hot one. Also, more of a “new age” cop (new age here means post 90s, don’t get confused). Kid me didn’t appreciate the hotness but I watched it in my teen years, and oh boy. And the action scenes, while sometimes ridiculous and making you wonder why???, really showed the actor’s training in physical scenes too. I always liked the way Brandtner immediately bonded with Rex and then we learn of the tragedy with his own dog. Too bad his love life was even more non-existent than Moser’s. 9/10
Marc Hoffmann: I’ll be honest, I just didn’t care for him for the most part, but I did like the fact that for the first time there was a ship with him and Nikki. They went for a different style with this one and it shows. Marc is less type A than the previous two, not a bad thing, but by that point, it was clear that Kommissar Rex as a show was nearing its end and I think it sometimes showed. 7/10
-----
Il Commissario Rex (At this point, let me just say that I don’t associate the two shows with each other. And whoever has watched both, would probably agree with me. It hardly matters that the Italian show starts as a spinoff.)
Lorenzo Fabbri: Ugh, I don’t know what it is with this guy but I didn’t like him much. His style was a lot like Moser at first (adopting Rex, saving him from a miserable fate, learning to live with him, etc.). I absolutely hated the storyline with the forensics scientist throwing herself at him every chance she got and him trying to avoid her instead of flat out telling her he’s not interested, and then at some point they slept together??? Anyway, did not like. 6/10
Davide Rivera: I liked that guy but sadly we didn’t have that many episodes with him. He could have had more to offer as a character. More quiet than the sometimes too loud Lorenzo, and took some time to warm up to Rex if I recall. I liked that he took no flack from his boss (Sidenote: the boss didn’t like Rex at first and kept wanting to get rid of him, and I wanted to rip him to shreds). 7/10
Marco Terzani: I literally found one season of his episodes, so I’ll reserve judgment (if anyone has his second and third season, please give it to me lol or point to the right direction). He seems kinda reckless? He’s definitely attractive. ?/10, more research needed.
----
Hudson and Rex
Charlie Hudson: Started off as kind of mediocre for me, then he made me change my mind. When I started watching, I was hellbent on comparing every single thing of this show to the characters of the original at first, so I’m partially to blame for my initial perception of him. However, I won’t blame myself for the bad writing, pacing, and overall mediocrity of S1 that contributed to a big part of it. Anyway, they used some of Moser’s backstory (divorced, adopts Rex after his K-9 partner tragically dies) and expanded on it. Charlie has had the most development as a character than any of the others, which makes sense since he’s the first of Rex’s partners to live that long or not get rebooted lol. He definitely gets bonus points for having a love life too. And for not dying, despite all the whump situations he gets himself into. Definitely falls under the reckless category too. 70% himbo, 100% whump magnet. 9/10

There are some important cultural aspects that needs to be tied into any discussion of Bunny + Religion. Anti-Catholic sentiment in America is historically deeply and intrinsically tied with anti-Irish sentiment. Bunny's parents are Irish. When Bunny and his family are immersing themselves in WASP culture and aesthetics, they are desperately trying to fit into a culture that will always look down on them for their origins.
Let's consider the experiences of some other members of the group.
Richard wants to be part of this wealthy, well-educated East Coast group, but he knows that he will never fully be "in" due to his own background as a poor West Coast kid. He pours his insecurity outward by condemning everybody he encounters from remotely similar backgrounds as classless and illiterate. He's not like those west coast junkies, he's different.
Camilla wants to be part of this group as well, but knows that she will always be treated as second-class within it as a woman. Like Richard, she externalizes this by criticizing every woman she encounters for every vaguely feminine trait they exhibit, while she does her best to project a masculine image by cutting her hair short and wearing her brother's clothes. She's not like those vapid girls, she's different.
(Judy of course is the unfortunate target of both of these outpourings, and as a result gets the most totally unwarranted flack out of anybody.)
Bunny's bigoted comments about Catholicism are exactly the same thing, symptomatic of his own resentment and insecurity. It arises from a desire to establish that he does belong in WASP culture by separating himself from the group that would be excluded. He's not like those Irish Papists, he's different.
It's about the self-loathing.
(Note that I did decide to write this post after reading @barnbridges post here and almost included this as a direct response, but ultimately decided my thoughts were too separate to really belong as a direct response there. But definitely go read that post as well.)

Richard Laymon is such an underrated horror writer...
Due to his inclusion of SA in many of his books I think he's something of a maligned figure even in the horror market, but as someone who personally writes dark fics with similar content, I think people make a lot of assumptions as to why he was personally drawn to that topic, and I don't think it’s fair to speculate, particularly as he isn't alive for us to question him.
He might not even have been comfortable discussing his reasoning in detail. We simply do not know.
It's possible, and even likely that he had misogynist tendencies, which I don't intend to deny. Being that misogny is so deeply ingrained in our culture, however, I'm equally interested in what other factors breathed upon his nape as he invoked the tales he put to page, and what I learn from further research I'm glad to share.
On the subject of misogny, however, our dear Richie also gets a lot of flack for horny descriptions of women, which is a fair critique, but in my reading I personally found many of his female protagonists to be strong and pretty fucking ballsy for the time of writing.
Idealisation and fetishisation, perhaps? Sure, I can see it. But being that horror novels of the time were rampant with damsels, these protagonists stand out as shining stars, and are worthy of deeper analysis.
i could talk about Laymon's books in immense detail, and whilst agreeing with some of his haters' complaints, I could also counter argue with confidence. Laymon's enigma lends a lot to this debate, and that is irresistible to me.
Furthermore, for a writer of fairly simplistic prose, Laymon had a sheer knack for creating atmosphere and suspense that, in my view, is cruelly underrated. He's such an interesting figure; I'd love to know more about him.
Thoughts, followers? He's painfully undiscussed on the horror scene, and I'd love to change that!

I keep thinking abt this and. okay bear with me. I think the reason I think "there is no such thing as Bad or Problematic Representation as long as it's made by a member of an in-group for enjoyment by that in-group" doesn't really work is because too many definitions of like, A Marginalized In-Group are very large. If your definitions of a marginalized group are, like, "queer people" or "poc" or "women", you are absolutely going to find that "bad representation" or whatever is possible. The other day I used as an example a hypothetical piece of sapphic media where the only bisexual woman is a manipulative infidel, possibly even hinted to "not ACTUALLY like women", but there are plenty of actual examples too. Richard O'Brien is nonbinary and Rocky Horror is still Kind of a transmisogynistic movie (even ignoring what he's said about Germaine Greer lol). VivziePop is bisexual and you people still act like that gay spider was written by the ideological equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church. There are an innumerable amount of women authors who have been criticized for writing misogynistic tropes, often directed at "sluts" and "whores". Within different nonwhite communities there is colorism, classism, religious discrimination, racism towards other people of color that is ignored if you say "poc representation" as like, one thing. Something made "by Latinos, for Latinos" can still present the racist dichotomy of "respectable, hard-working, good Latinos" and "bad Latinos", the unemployed, the addicted, the "ghetto", the undocumented immigrants. So many gay people have absolutely awful things to say about other gay people, trans people about other trans people, women about other women, people of color about other people of color, disabled people about other disabled people. I don't think this is what people mean when they defend a creator who is part of X group from accusations that they are making Bad Representation of X group (i.e. if I got flack for representing polyamorous, sexually active bisexual characters, as a polyamorous and bisexual person who does not view these traits as negative), but it is still undoubtedly a direction that that can be taken in, especially with definitions of certain groups as broad as "queer" or "of color."

💫. ┊ so I. fixated a little on cannibalism. and since I knew i had at least 2 cannibal paras I decided to make an official list of paras that are cannibals. here u go:
Connor Wolfe (Phantasmagoria - Crossfire)
Ghost Crowley (Mad as a Crow - In All My Dreams I Drown)
Alice Rose (Mad as a Crow - In All My Dreams I Drown)
Harlow Spade (Mad as a Crow - Crystalized Gold)
Gary Wocky (Fractured Fables - Lost in Wonderland)
Thomas Blanc (Fractured Fables - Lost in Wonderland)
Lazarus Banner (Phantasmagoria - Assembled Monsters)
Khole Banner (Phantasmagoria - Assembled Monsters)
Lorelai Banner (Phantasmagoria - Assembled Monsters)
Richard Irvine (Phantasmagoria - The Arcane Files)
Red Hart (Fractured Fables - Lost in Wonderland)
Reggie Hart (Fractured Fables - Lost in Wonderland)
Ruby Hart (Fractured Fables - Lost in Wonderland)
┊┊🕹. Important to note: not all of them consume (human) flesh, some just drink blood. Also, majority technically aren't cannibals because they aren't (fully) human, I think Alice is the only one that actually fits the definition of a cannibal. Well, Thomas too, I guess, since he drinks a mix of different types of animals blood. The Harts are humans, but the blood they drink is animal blood, so they're just kinda Weird but I wouldn't put it past Red to drink human blood, either.
┊┊🕹. Another thing is, cannibalism is sort of..."accepted" in my paracosms. It's legal in Wonderland, there's an understanding in Arcadia that some species need to eat others in order to survive. The only ones who get any flack for this are Connor (as he lives in Earth 6) and everyone in MaaC (tho Harlow & Ghost argue that they're not human & shouldn't be thought of as such). Oh, and Laz, I guess, but he's a lab experiment so maybe he gets some more leeway idk 🤷
