Designing the OSP Ships for Nebulous Fleet Command

A good long while ago, I had the honour to design the second faction for the supremely excellent game Nebulous Fleet Command. (Get it here, don't hesitate, what are you waiting for? Get the game!) That faction being the OSP. The OSP's main thing being, that almost their entire fleet is made up of retrofitted civilian ships, hastily pushed into service. Almost. The first ship on the design block was The Ocello class Command Cruiser. The idea behind it was, that it used to be a state of the art Warship, but that time had passed a good 100 years ago. Many of these were mothballed withing OSP territory, and quite frankly you don't look a fully armored 12000 ton gif horse in the mouth, when a battle hardened navy is knocking at your door asking "you and what army?"

From the Tip of the spear we move over to what was avaliable. Civvies. Not to fret though, what they lack in class, they make up for in mass, either by numbers or by tonnage. We'll start with the numbers first, and this is where we meet the clippers. Clippers are the small fry of vessels, shuttles tugs, transport feeders, the small guys of the blue collar world. This may not bless them with lots of armor, but they sure as heck makes up for it in versatility. The Design brief asked for everyday civilian vessels in the size range of 60 to 95 meters, so I gave it my best shot with this lot.

Ultimately only three of these made it into the game, to uphold the delicate balance of the amount of work it takes the team to actually make one of these ships happen and also the gameplay balance of what their exact roles are and wether or not they are redundant, gameplay wise. I think the Team went with the right vessels, and I would only lament that I'd love to have had the "Mantis" as well. This leads us to the final and perhaps most interesting subject: The Freighters. The design document asked for three distinct types of freighters: -Bulk Freighters -Container Freighter -Liquid Gas Freighters Adittionally these ships were meant to be Randomizable in two ways: -be made out of three interchangeable sections, front, middle, engine

-lots of little doodads, like bridges, cranes, tanks etc. So I got to work and these are the results: Bulk freighter base models:

This worked out quite well for my sensibilities, so I went along with the other designs. Base Container Freighters:

And that is all! What a great and wild ride! The LNG Freighters unfortunately also ended up on the chopping block, but it's also understandable why; there's just too much hollow tank on these, to make for anything useful in combat. There we are. One whole like diary entry about my short and super sweet work for Nebulous Fleet Command. The Team there is doing wonderful work, and it has been one of my proudest moments seeing my scribbles turn into actual things in a video game that you can use to fight with - surreal! Shoutout to Mazer Ludd for Commissioning me on this awesome project and of course to Stephmo for making such cool models from my puny drawings!

What a day! Everything went according to plan and sooo well. I'm still stunned.

So I rented this super cool e-race bike. Unfortunately I chose the frame a little too small but anyway, it worked OK. I set out from Malaucène at 13:30 and reached the summit after 1.35 hours. Which is pretty insane speed for the 22 km climb. I felt almost bad everytime I passed someone going up "the honest way". I was flying up the road at about 12/14 km/h on average. The fastest speed being 28.5 km/h. And now let me tell you - this was still sport and an effort! It's by no means riding like on a motorbike. It was still a matter of pedalling and pedalling and pedalling and the sun burning down on me. Also, always skipping between the 3 levels of support. I couldn't go full support all the way, the battery wouldn't have lasted that long. So, yeah, I am super proud and happy and it was so cool to eventually take that famous pic in front of the summit sign. I have such a massive respect for everyone who mad it up there by pure muscle power. And many were even riding much further than only the 22 km climb. They've come from other towns and had quite a journey behind them as I learned from some. There was a couple, I think on their honeymoon because the woman was wearing a veil under her helmet, and they reached the top together by muscle power. They were so cute.

Before I continue, take a guess what hurt the most after over 40 km on that bike?

b) the bottom/lady parts

c) fingers

Ok, so, I'm up there, happy, proud, enjoying the stunning views and a caffeine bar but didn't have too much time as I had to return the rented bike soon. 🥲 NOW - the descent! Oh. My. Lord! As much as it was fun, it was scary! Thanks to the little bike computer I could see my speed. The average was about 40 km/h with a peak at almost 60 km/h which was freaking scary! I was literally flying. On slippery flat pedals, on a too small bike. Lol. I tried to imagine what it would be like going down over 70 km/h, let alone 100 km/h. Everyone who does that must be freaking nuts! I mean, the road here was shared with cars, motorbikes, camper vans, walkers even (oh and one guy on roller skis) so no way to go faster than that and not without the right shoes and pedals. That's for another day 🤫

So, what hurt the most? The fingers! Jfc, braking for 22 km is hard! I had to take 3 breaks on the way down to shake my numb fingers back to life. Also they became sweaty and I was scared what'd happened if I slipped? So yeah, 2nd most: lady parts, because of the too small bike and the saddle was a bit too low 🙈 (but shoutout to the super bib shorts I bought here, great padding)

I arrived back in Malaucène much earlier than my "service car" ;) and had some time to chat some more with the very friendly rental dude. Told him I only started cycling a few weeks ago. His response was "Oh, congratulations!" (How sweet) and he had a cute doggo there minding the shop ☺

Ok I have to go off about Luisa’s look for a minute because I’ve been watching Encanto daily (sometimes twice a day) in that honeymoon phase of wanting to see every detail and I’m quietly taking notes on her outfit so I can make it for myself and I have a lot to say about it

So it’s clear her whole look is about practicality, right, she’s sweet, she’s femme, but she has a lot of manual labor to do on the daily and her whole self-worth is riding on doing it well. So everything she’s got going on is supporting that goal! 

Her hair: gorgeous, I would pay so much money to see it down, but she can’t afford to have it in her face or in the way. So she’s got it braided on the side, which is pretty and decorative but also a braid can sometimes hold onto your little short tendrils that would pop out of a regular ponytail, and we know she has some little tendrils! 

Also, the bun! It bounces like it’s not super tight, so probably she’s not taking a ton of time in the morning to get it precise--again, it’s a practical choice, she’s working out before the coffee’s even ready. A quick bun is up off her neck, out of her face, nothing dangling that’s gonna get caught on the bottom of a church or whatever. She has a nice thick ribbon for it too, because all that hair is probably pretty heavy.

I'm pretty sure others have covered this so I'm going to make this short and sweet. But when it comes to what the director, Kari Skogland; or the writer, Malcolm Spellman have to say regarding Sam and Bucky's sexuality, please just disregard it.

These people, Marvel actors included, are put through rigorous media training and are instructed on what they can and cannot say regarding certain topics, sexuality included.

Even if they are coding a character a certain way in the show, they can't just come out and say that.

Plus, they also aren't coming out and stating "no, Sam/Bucky is straight"

As a queer Native American, trust me, I fucking get how desperate we are for representation. And it sucks how aggressively heteronormative the superhero genre can be. But please, as someone who has been doing this for a long time, try to not to take what they say in interviews to heart—even if they didn't actually feel that way, they wouldn't be able to say anything about it anyways.

Blame the house of mouse and the old-fashioned standards Hollywood still sets.

There is literally NO hetero explanation for this.

I Watch a Movie I Should Have Seen: Teen Witch

I had not heard of this movie until friends suggested it for my list of movies to watch. They especially pointed out the amazing rap moment and that’s really all I knew that I could not infer from the title.

This movie doesn’t waste time getting to the saxophone-heavy music. This is how it should be. I can’t tell you how many movies I watch that make me wait for the sax solo. And sometimes it doesn’t even come! Looking at you, The Godfather.

We’ve all had that dream where a mystery hunk in a dress shirt with rolled up, short sleeves and Cavariccis slinks towards you in the dark. Why do we have to wake up???

No matter how good you look and feel, never stand on a ledge in heels. Maybe block heels but not the ones she has on.

Louise’s little brother eats sheet cake under her bed and reads her diary, actually ripping pages out. He’s clearly a psychopath that deserves whatever magic comes his way.

Her dad is not creepy. He’s just someone who likes his daughter to wear his favorite color.

Hot guy from the dream (Brad) rocks a 5.0 Mustang and is dating the popular girl (Randa) living right across the street from Louise. Why do the important people in these movies always live so close to each other? I bet Brad went 300 feet before he had to honk that horn (not a euphemism) for Randa.

Louise’s best friend (Polly) is excessively frumpy. She has on so many layers, I don’t know how the bike could support the weight. She’s dressed like she’s arriving at Ellis Island from the old country.

Louise and Polly wear disrespectfully large trench coats most of the time. The kind I would only wear if I was trying to cut weight for a fight. I know Louise will eventually be made over into a hottie but she doesn’t really need to start in a cocoon. In She’s All That, they simply used glasses.

There’s a trio of rappers that serenade the school. I will call them The Leastie Boys.

Louise has skipped grades because she’s so smart. I get it now. If I was a younger kid amongst seniors, I’d want to hide myself under as much wool and tweed as possible.

There’s a particularly horrific scene where the diary page that her brother ripped out is accidentally handed in with her homework and the teacher reads the whole thing to the class. Between the brother, the dad, and this awful teacher, I’m not going to be surprised if there’s a clown in the sewers.

The girls’ gym uniform is.a purple leotard and that’s it. No shorts. No trench coat.

The popular girls spontaneously break into a song called “I Like Boys.” Is this a musical? She’s introducing them all to this song and they are choreographing it on the spot beautifully. I guess if you feel confident enough in that leotard, you can do anything.

It appears that the leotards are stuck to their bodies. They don’t ever take them off. They have clearly showered because they are drying their hair while still in the gym leotards.

Brad works out shirtless on the football field. He throws a football twice at a tire and never misses. They cut from the throw to the same shot of the ball traveling through the tire. “There’s no time to throw two balls through a tire! Use the same clip! We have six more hours of leotard footage to shoot!”

Quick question: If you were doing an audition for a play and your scene was a kissing one with the girl whose diary about being into you was read out loud in front of you, would you have any awkwardness in the audition? Brad doesn’t. Nothing weird about this. Does he have the memory of a goldfish?

Brad, too aroused by teenage hanky panky, almost runs over Louise on her bike. He stops the car and tries to help her by offering a ride home. Is Brad a misunderstood jock hunk? Randa makes him leave but he was really concerned. What a sweet goldfish man.

With a broken bike and no cell phones, Louise is forced to seek the help of the nearby fortune teller. The fortune teller (Madame Serena) doesn’t let her use the phone and basically robs her of the last cash she has on her.

Madame Serena notices something odd during her palm reading and asks her name again. When Louise says “Miller,” Madame Serena realizes she is a witch with powers that will come to fruition on her 16th birthday. We later learn that Madame Serena and Louise go back 100s of years with witch souls (or whatever). If you had a spiritual connection with someone named “Miller,” I think you wouldn’t miss it the first time. Maybe she should look into getting a third ear instead of a third eye.

We learn that Goldfish Brad can Fonzie a Coke out of a machine. The impressive part about this is that Cokes were only 60 cents. I want to go to there.

Louise turns 16 while her brother dry humps the table in excitement for birthday cake. Feel free to watch it. There’s other way to describe it.

Randa asks Louise if she’d like to go on a date with her cousin from out of town. This is definitely going to work out.

The cousin is an insane nerd who is acting as if he only has one night to live. He asks her if she wants to smoke weed at one point. Then once he’s all drugged up, he tries to get some loving in the car on the way home. It’s cringe-y. Thankfully Louise is gaining powers and makes him literally disappear.

Louise turns her brother into a dog. As if I didn’t hate him enough already, now he’s a talking animal. (See Hocus Pocus)

Madame Serena gives Louise a book of spells. She uses a spell to make the popular girls tell each other the truth. It starts off with calm “you’re not a good singer” insults but gets real, super fast. One points out the other’s “alkie mother.”

Louise wants to make Brad love her and it appears that the secret to casting a good spell is cayenne pepper or maybe paprika.

Brad comes over Louise’s house to work on his English paper. Louise apparently removes the hundreds of chairs from her room so they’d have to sit on the bed. How many chairs does a teenage girl typically have in her room? It’s certainly enough for each family member to barge in and immediately notice them all missing.

Louise thinks better of forcing Brad to like her and gets all the chairs out of her closet. She’s a good person deep down.

The awful teacher is back and this time, goes through Louise’s bag and shows her birth control pills to the class. How does this teacher, even in the 80s, have a job?

Louise rightfully gets revenge. She makes a voodoo doll of the teacher and makes him undress in front of the class. The principal catches him right as Louise pulls the dolls underwear down. Somehow he still has a job. Tenure is amazing.

We finally get to the Rap Off I’ve been hearing so much about. Leader of the Leasties and Polly battle it out for one verse each. Honestly, this could have gone on longer. I know there was magic behind it but Polly’s verse was fire.

Brad tells Louise that someone like him has to go out with the most popular girl in school no matter how terrible she is. Social expectations are the worst. Instead of convincing Brad that he doesn’t have to be with Randa, it would be easier to cast a spell to make yourself popular. Maybe even insanely popular.

The chunky knit sweater budget was out of control for this movie

We have a montage showing us the extent of her popularity. She gets applause when she arrives places. People follow her around. The Leastie Boys rap for her. And her wardrobe consists of so much more denim.

Brad takes her to a lookout point that they have to climb up to and she’s unfortunately too popular for sensible footwear. It’s hard to climb up a sunflower hill in heels. But you do what you have to do to wear the crown!

In this abandoned house, they take off some of their six layers of clothing. Then they make out in the dirty house like only the most popular kids in school could.

Everyone starts dressing and wearing their hair like Louise. Polly gets left out of everything. I don’t know if scenes were cut out (What could possibly be considered “not good enough” for this film?) but we never have the scene where the newly popular girl treats her best friend like garbage and has to apologize. I know Polly misses her but I bet she could just ask Louise to hang out. Anyway, Louise tries to talk to Polly and Polly makes her feel bad.

Because she is so popular, Louise has to sneak out the back of her house to avoid her adoring classmates. Brad picks her up on a side street and takes her for a drive. They go out on the river to talk as teenagers do. He asks her to the dance. She turns him down because she thinks he’s been tricked him into liking her. She wants it real.

Louise wants to undo the popularity spell and she talks Madame Serena into coming to the dance with her to help her do it. No one questions bringing a tiny, old woman as your date to the dance. Not even the teachers.

She wishes the popularity away in the middle of the dance floor. People stop looking at her but Goldfish Brad still feels the pull for regular Louise. He walks slowly towards her. They touch fingertips and roll them up so the palms touch. This happens in a lot of romantic movies. I don’t get it. It’s a good way to train yourself to high five. You learn proper hand alignment. What you want the finish to be. But it’s not romantic. Either way, they kiss and all is good.

This is a fine, late 80s teen movie. It’s essentially a knock-off Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The brother, the nerd date, and the awful teacher were unnecessary. Now that I think about it, the nerd date never reappeared. In most movies you’d have him reappear somewhere embarrassing like under a manure truck that’s about to be dumped. In this movie, he vanishes into nothingness. It’s haunting.

Also, they show that water undoes her spells in the beginning and never return to that either. I was expecting the boat to tip over when she had that moment with Brad on the river. That never happened.

And, finally, she never made up with Polly. Where’s the learned-her-lesson reunion with the best friend, awkwardly hugging through all the layers?

Minus all these loose threads, I enjoyed it. I’d even watch it again if it was on.

イケメン戦国：戦国おとぎ話～秀吉ルート

A close daimyo friend of Hideyoshi, named Shibata-dono is celebrating his 60th birthday. (I am not so sure if this is a reference to Shibata Katsuei~ because Shibata and Toyotomi weren’t really the best buddies.) MC volunteers to help out in the preparations and sew a chanchanko  or a sleeveless Haori. Hideyoshi explains that reaching that age is amazing, since it is quite a rare thing in the Muromachi Period. I am guessing because of war or diseases without cure. 

The color red relating to its Chinese roots is a lucky color for good luck, long life. The practice of sleeveless haori is usually given to a child, but as a point of reaching 60 years of age it means to a symbol of rebirth for more years to come. 

This somehow reminded MC how different lher life in the present is. She tells Hideyoshi that people even reach 100 years. Hideyoshi said, it’s really a peaceful time. Among all the main routes, I think Hideyoshi’s route is the most reflective of how it is easy to die in those times. If you have read his main route, his route borrows the historical Toyotomi’s death poem about life and death. And, MC has accepted the fact that Hideyoshi will always be in war and may die fighting for Nobunaga. So, hearing how Hideyoshi reacts surprised about living long reminded her of that. Hideyoshi notices the gloom on her face and asks immediately why. MC denies her worries.

I seriously love Hideyoshi’s MC. While Hideyoshi loves to spoil her a lot, she always attempts keep a logical reaction and her attempt to be strong. 

MC diverts the topic and  shares the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, relating to the chanchanko. As MC progresses in the story and tells Hideyoshi how little red riding hood was sent out to the woods alone.

This bothered Hideyoshi. HAHAHA So cute

“ He sat me on his lap and locked me in his arms.” 

“Why let someone go alone wihen you already know there’s a wolf lurking, in the first place.” 

“There’s no enough reason to go through such danger.” 

And, he says, he won’t let MC be in such situation. MC laughed saying it’s just a story. Still, Hideyoshi pushes and say he won’t let her in that position.

(AH, THIS REMINDS ME OF THAT SERIOUSLY DRAMATIC YET ANNOYING SCENE IN MITSUHIDE’S ROUTE.)

Days after, Hideyoshi tells MC that Shibata-san has sent a note  that he is sick and won’t be able to prepare for the party. Somehow both of them shared the same idea of going there. Hideyoshi accepted MC’s offer to join him, since he would really love to introduce her to Shibata-san. The two depart from Azuchi the next day. Upon entering a town before Shibata’s territories, Hideyoshi offered MC to rest for a while. 

As they were walking, one of the townsfolk asked if they were crossing the forest. Then, they were warned about the rumoured bandits called Wolves. Hideyoshi decided to just go back Azuchi for safetly and report about the bandits. However, MC said that the forest path is quite short and it would be a waste if they don’t give Shibata  his  birthday wishes on the day itself.  Despite having qualms, Hideyoshi listens to MC, but assures her that he’s there to protect her.

Entering the forest,  the two heard a scream. Hideyoshi tells MC to hold tight as he races towards the voices. Hideyoshi sees an elderly woman and a young girl and jumps  in fronr of the bandits. Of course, this aggitates the bandits. Hideyoshi smiles to MC and tells her to stay on the horse. Then, jumps off to face the bandits. He tells them to leave their weapons and runaway, since he has no plans of attacking them. 

He confronts them with the fact that they may survive today, but what about tomorrow—referring back to his own experience. One bandit attempts to attack, but Hideyoshi counters it without much effort. Realizing their opponent, the bandids did follow his suggestion, left the weapons, and left. 

MC notices this and echoes Hideyohi’s thoughts within her, hoping they’d find hope like him. But, Hideyoshi says he now lives more because he wants to be with her (as he promised in his main route) . 

This makes MC happy that..

“I reached out to him and gave him a kiss.” 

The suddent kiss painted a shock expression on Hideyoshi-san’s face made me smile. 

“Let’s live a long life, together.” 

Hideyoshi recovers from her sweet action and smiles back reassuring her. Then, kisses her back, sealing the promise. 

Upon reacing Shibata’s residence, the two presented their gift and birthday wishes. Then, finally retires on the room prepared for them. Turns out, the bandits have been causing a problem in Shibata’s estate and this somehow helped them deal with the issue. 

The name, “Wolves” does connotes to the danger they bring, as explained by Shibata. MC tells Hideyoshi that  500 years ahead, the same meaning is shared and there’s even a song, “Men Are Wolves.” 

Hideyoshi begins to tease MC saying, maybe men are indeed wolves. Then, pushes it further by asking, “So, am I a wolf as well?” 

This makes MC blush and replies,” Sometimes, I think you are.” 

“And, when is it?”, he asks. 

“Stop that teasing question.” 

“I am not teasing you. I want to know. I don’t want to scare you. So, please tell me.”

(He’s so unfair.)

“When… you kiss me.” 

“When, I kiss you.. Then, I’ll kiss you so gently, you won’t think I’m a wolf.” 

Hideyoshi closes the space between them, kissing her sweetly and gently. As he ends the kiss, MC responds. “it’s gentle.” 

But, she wants more and can’t mutter anyword and just looks at Hideyoshi. 

Hideyoshi then asks, if they can do more thatn that. 

Premium Ending

Hideyoshi tells her that he is thankful for her being in his life and promises to keep his promise to cherish his life more and more. (Ugh, Hideyoshi *hugs*) 

The way he kisses and touches me is too gentle, it melts my mind and my body. As our lips slowly separate from the kiss, his heated gaze is towards me. ’I promise.” ,as I reply, Hideyoshi-san’s smile left his lips as he moves to my neck. I let out a moan as he sucked the base of my neck. The sound of  our kisses and rustling of clothes reverberate in the room, as my skin is slowly being exposed by his pulling of the obi. I suddenly covered my chest, realizing my embarrassment from getting seen.

“ Don’t cover it, let me see them properly.” 

To not completely escape, he stimulates the place I tried to conceal with his lips. My hands lost it’s ability to avoid it, as his sweet kiss trailed down on my body.  “Hideyoshi-sa…n”  “I can’t be any gentler anymore. I just said I don;t want you to think I’m like those men. But, touching you this way.. I won’t be able to stop myself…Are you scared?”  Hideyoshi-san asks as he touches me, his fingers softly…

“I am not afraid, just a little embarrassed If it’s you, I am not afraid if you show that wolf side..I want more of you. I love all of you.” 

After a month, Hideyoshi visits MC’s room, while she does her own seamstress work. Hideyoshi enters somewhat giddier than usual. He holds a scroll from Shibata. Hideyoshi sits beside her and unrolls the scroll. It’s a painting  of Shibata and his family with the sleeveless haori MC made. MC points at the painting of Shibata’s wife saying how she looks happy. Hideyoshi echoes this by saying, the two get along really well during their visit.  Part of the painting is the girl they saved in the forest. Turns out she’s one of Shibata’s grandchild.  By the end of the scroll is a note saying “ thank you for the both of them.

MC tells Hideyoshi that they should have the same painting one day, surrounded by their children. Hideyoshi responds by saying, “Shall we make a big family one day, then?” The two laugh at the hopeful future they dreamed of, as they exchange kisses not realizing who initiated it.  [END]  Such a nice alternative story for Hideyoshi, when historically he only had one child and left no other decendants.

With Shakespeare’s route release just around the corner— a day after this event ends, actually, the event highlights the side of Shakespeare as a playwright. Albeit, the word 「Script」doesn’t seem to exist in our vampires’ dictionary.

Anyhow, this event give out tons of closet spaces but at the cost of blood and tears with all the effort required to collect it all. Especially with how General Election 2019 ended merely 19 hours before this event started.
