Every now and again I like to gift an author with an illustration of a fanfic of theirs that I have immensely enjoyed. This illustration is for @zeldaseyebrows fanfiction, "The Mushroom Risotto Incident" on Ao3. This is from Chapter 2, "Stir".

Link and Zelda fall into a sweet, confortable routine together, but Zelda just can't bring herself to confess her love to Link due to guilt from "accidentally" witnessing an embarrassing moment before Ganon was vanquished. The fic is rated E(18+) so please mind content warnings.

I love this sweet moment of adoration and cuddles.

The Guard Outside the Door

Inspired by the comic below:

Zelda hummed as she walked out of her chambers, her research notes in hand. Glancing to her left, the Royal Guard stationed at her door stood as he always did since he was assigned his new post approximately two weeks prior. Taciturn and rigid, staring directly ahead with those icy blue eyes.

"Hello," Zelda made another attempt at getting him to at least look at her, but it was to no avail. He remained as he was without even the slightest indication that he had even heard her. She was mildly irritated. Her last guard always gave her a twinkly-eyed smile when she came or went, and it was something she had grown fond of in her comings and goings. This new guard, however, was a stick in the mud and absolutely no fun at all.

"It's polite to at least acknowledge when someone speaks to you," she huffed at him, putting her hands on her hips in disapproval. "You are not required to be rude to be my chamber guard."

Still no reaction.

She felt the scorn rise in her chest, and in an impulsive move, grabbed the guard's beret by the crest badge and yanked it down in front of his face. Crossing her arms to see if he would do anything, she was thwarted yet again. The guard didn't react whatsoever!

"UGH!" The princess rolled her eyes and stomped away in disgust, muttering about speaking to her father about the manners of his Royal Guard.

She missed the pair of azure eyes peek out from under a lopsided beret, following her every move until she was out of sight.

When she came back to her chambers that evening, she was in poor spirits. Much praying, meditating, and study proved fruitless yet again, and each day felt more like failure. As she approached her door, the guard stood--beret straightened--just as stoic as before.

"I don't suppose you'd have a smile for your princess, would you?" Zelda asked, her tone noticeably more demure than earlier that day.

He blinked, but gave no other reaction. Zelda frowned. She grabbed his beret, yanking it down over his eyes again.

"Fine. Be rude!" she snapped, and failed to hide her sob as she walked into her room and slammed the door.

In her haste, she missed a troubled brow and two icy blue eyes glance toward her door and then down at the stone floor.

The next morning, Zelda emerged from her chambers, glanced over at the sober guard, and continued to stare. When he offered no interaction or acknowledgement, she took a step closer. The blue-eyed guard continued to stand unaffected. Fuming inside, Zelda walked right up to the side of his face and stared, her nose and lips mere inches from his ear. 

"Why won't you acknowledge me?!" she whispered harshly under her breath. "Am I that repulsive that you eschew conversation?"

The guard swallowed hard. Then blinked. But nothing else. Zelda stomped her foot and growled loudly.

"Uuuughhh! You are positively INTRACTABLE!" She yanked his beret over his face and stormed off.

She missed the guard letting out the long, drawn out breath he was holding as he slumped up against the wall and put his hands over his face.

That evening was the annual ball, and Zelda dreaded it every year. Even at fifteen, she would be made to dance with unfamiliar potential suitors, some twice her age. One particular partner was especially attentive in all the wrong ways, and filled her chest with anxiety as she danced. An unwelcome hand too low on her back, an unmistakable brushing against her bosom, and a far-too-close-for-comfort pair of lips against her ear and neck. After his third dance with her (that she could not refuse), she had had enough. Complaining of a headache, she asked to retire to her room. As she left the Sanctum, she did not see the offending suitor follow her down the corridor. Before she rounded the corner to her bedroom door, a strong pair of hands grabbed her around the waist.

"Leaving so soon, my sweet pet? We've only just started our fun!" his inky dark tone made her shiver with fear. She wrenched herself out of his grasp, her words spitting out a retort.

"I would caution you to take care with your hands and your words, sir," she hissed. "Your advances are not welcome. It was inappropriate for you to follow me here!" She rounded the corner, and saw her dispassionate guard standing by her door. Her pursuer grabbed her by the wrist and yanked her back behind the corner and out of the sight of the guard. 

"You will do as I say, and I will act as I will, silly girl," he seethed at her resistance. She shrieked and slapped him in the face, throwing him off balance. It was just enough to get away and she ran back around the corner in a panic, but her guard was nowhere in sight. 

"GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE--" but the voice behind the corner stopped abruptly as she heard a scuffle, a muffled cry, and a sickening thud. Then silence. Zelda backed up toward her door, the tears spilling over as she crumpled to the floor outside her room.

Suddenly, a soft pair of white gloved hands took gentle hold of her arms, lifting her up off the floor to standing. Her breathing came in sobs, and the comforting arms attached to the gloved hands held her close as she leaned her forehead onto a willing shoulder. Despite her anxiety, she felt safe enough to wrap her arms around his torso and squeeze tightly.

"Thank you," she whispered through her tears. "I don't know what would have happened if you weren't--" but the rest of the sentence was interrupted by a soft gloved hand stroking her hair. She melted into his arms and stayed there for what seemed like hours. She sniffed, and pulled back, and she was met with a pair of crystal blue eyes staring into hers with an expression she wasn't able to interpret. The corners of her lips turned up into a smile . Oh, it was a good thing he hadn't looked at her before, because she could fall for those eyes. The head-over-heels kind of fall.

She grinned playfully, grabbed the tip of his beret, and yanked it down over his face.

And this time, she didn't miss him sliding it back in place and giving her a wide, white-toothed smile.

73. “I missed you.” Gideon/Harrow

Took me a bit to get my head around this one, but I think it worked out well enough in the end. Consider this an AU where the Emperor never summoned the heirs of the Houses and Gideon therefore successfully escaped to the Cohort. Contains some mild spoilers for Harrow the Ninth, I guess? Kind of?

In the opinion of Private First Class Gideon Nav - rising BARI star of the Cohort, dirty toenail of the Emperor, ladykiller in her own mind - closing time is the best time. As much as she loves the hustle and bustle of the mess hall during its peak hours - chatting up all the uniformed honeys, filling three or four elaborate orders at a time like the coffee rockstar that she is, showing off her sick coffee-slinging skillz with style and flair rivaled by none - there’s something soothing about the quiet at the end of her shift that speaks to her soul. The mess hall empty save for a handful of stragglers and night owls. The slow work of cleaning the machines. The pervasive near silence in which every move she makes echoes in the cavernous space. 

It reminds her a bit of nights in Drearburh spent jogging in the recyc mist with only the sound of her own footsteps and breath for company, and enough time has passed since those lonesome nights that she can feel a tinge of nostalgia for them even as she internally celebrates her successful escape. She thinks of the Ninth House rarely enough these days that she can indulge in some light nostalgia without immediately feeling salty about the absolute shitshow that was her entire childhood and adolescence. 

Gideon’s got her back to the counter, wiping out a portafilter and whistling a jaunty tune, when she hears someone step up to the counter. She’s about to tell her unfortunate customer that she’s all closed up for the night - technically she’s still got ten minutes on her shift, but she’s already cleaned out the coffee urns and wrapped up the pastries so seriously fuck off already - when she makes the mistake of turning around. She is immediately and viscerally reminded of the Ninth House again the second she locks eyes with the young woman before her, and it’s not just because she looks like a skeleton.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus looks different, of course. She’s almost a year older, for one thing. For another, her face isn’t covered with ten pounds of ancient paint, revealing an awkwardly ferrety visage that Gideon would hardly recognize if it weren’t for the bottomless black eyes in them and how deeply they stare into her golden ones. There are dark shadows under her deeply set eyes that render her face at least partly familiar, as they echo the sockets of a skull. Her mouth is pinched, as if the stick up her ass has finally penetrated all the way to her cranium and jammed her lips shut. Her nose is thin and sharp as a knife. Her chin looks like it would put someone’s eye out if they were fool enough to try to embrace her, assuming Harrow didn’t slit their throat first for the very attempt. She’s wearing Cohort whites rather than her familiar billowing black vestments, and the uniform makes her look sallow and somehow even more painfully thin.

“Griddle,” she says before Gideon can start to wonder if she’s somehow stumbled into an alternate reality. For how different she looks, clearly Harrow hasn’t changed. Gideon rolls her eyes and returns her attention to the portafilter. “Is this how you treat all of your customers?” 

Beneath her typically peevish tone there’s something unfamiliar in Harrow’s voice, something it takes Gideon a good twenty seconds to decipher. Holy shit, Harrow’s nervous. Gideon’s seen Harrow be nervous before, but previously it’s always been buried under considerably more makeup and Gideon generally hasn’t been the cause of it.

“Customer, huh? Sorry, I naturally assumed you were here just to make my life hell again. Drag me back to Drearburh kicking and screaming, something like that. I didn’t think you might actually be here for a cup of coffee.”

“Yes, well, as usual you are mistaken. I was informed that on this deck’s mess hall I would be able to find a coffee adept who’s considered something of a genius with BARI. I certainly didn’t expect it to be you. I thought surely you’d be on the front lines on some distant planet by now.”

Gideon scoffs. “You don’t expect me to believe you joined the Cohort just to get a decent cup of coffee, do you? I mean, I know it’s all ice cold sludge on the Ninth, but damn, girl.” She fetches a porcelain mug (the darkest one she can find: it’s charcoal gray, but that’ll have to do) despite the fact that Harrow has yet to place anything remotely resembling an order and begins preparing her special extra-dark brew. It’s bitter enough that it’s unlikely to overwhelm Harrow’s stunted palette, and she should appreciate its blackness. 

“Of course I didn’t join for the coffee,” Harrow snaps. It’s funny: her face is much more expressive without her skull paint, but Gideon finds it harder to read. “If I’d known you were the so-called BARI star the others keep rattling on about, I wouldn’t have bothered with coffee at all. I was lured into a false sense of security by the word ‘genius.’”

Gideon grins smugly as she flips the mug expertly into place in a daredevil move that usually earns her at least a smile if not a room number. “I guess some folks appreciate my brilliance.” She braces the triple-shot portafilter against the counter with one arm and effortlessly tamps the espresso grounds with the other.

Harrow scowls, and it nearly makes Gideon homesick. “Your brilliance remains to be seen.”

Gideon locks the portafilter into place and hits the brew button, counting off the seconds in her head. “That’s fine; you’ll taste it soon enough.” As the espresso streams beautifully into the mug, Gideon adds a liberal sprinkle from the jar she’s marked Gideon’s Special Dark Mixture of Doom and Ecstasy.

“I must admit, I didn’t expect to see you here so long after your… departure from the Ninth. I assumed you would have been deployed by now.”

“I was,” Gideon says with a shrug as she flicks the espresso machine off, trying not to sound butthurt about it. “Served for nearly a week before I got injured. Caught a leg full of shrapnel defending my commanding officer. I wanted to stay in the field - it was only a damn limp - but they didn’t want to risk me losing the leg to infection.” She removes the portafilter and bangs the wet grounds out into the garbage. “They started me behind the counter here while I was recuperating, found I had a knack for it, and I haven’t been redeployed since.”

Harrow’s face cycles through several dozen expressions that Gideon can’t quite parse before settling on ‘carefully neutral.’ “How is your leg now?”

Gideon stirs the brew with a wooden swizzle stick to help the BARI blend dissolve. “I’ve got some gnarly scarring, but it only hurts first thing in the morning.” And by the end of her shift most days. And if she walks too much, or stands too much, or sits too much. “Don’t worry, though; I look even hotter with the scars.” Gideon winks while Harrow groans, and for a moment feels like old times. She sets the steaming, fragrant mug down in front of Harrow. “So. What’s your story? I didn’t think anything short of a summons from the Emperor Undying himself would lure you out of Drearburh.”

Harrow eyes the drink as if she expects it to bite her. “I have no story,” she says without affect. “I am here to bring honor to my House.”

Gideon wipes the portafilter with the rag at her hip and locks it back into the machine, then hits the brew button to run hot water through it. “That’s some classic Harrowhark Nonagesimus evasive bullshit if I ever heard it. Why are you really here? The congregation finally all die out?” She jabs the button again and the water dribbles to a halt. “Oh, shit, did they finally figure out about your parents??”

“No and no,” Harrow says firmly. She leans in and gives the cup an experimental sniff. “I have simply decided that I can serve my House better as a Cohort necromancer than as the Reverend Daughter. What better way to disseminate the gospel of the Ninth and expand our congregation than by showing the universe what the Ninth House is capable of.” She attempts to take a sip of her drink and promptly scalds her mouth. 

“Careful, it’s hot.” Gideon studies her and shakes her head. “Y’know, you almost had me, but no. Maybe that’s how you rationalize it to Crux and Aiglamene, and maybe even to yourself, but that’s not why you enlisted.”

Harrow looks strangely vulnerable with her pale and naked face and her seared lips. “Would you believe I wanted to test my mettle and prove that I am indeed the greatest necromancer of my generation on the field of battle?”

“No,” Gideon replies bluntly. Harrow’s studying the steaming beverage like she can’t figure out how to drink it without injury, and she probably really can’t. Gideon still remembers how steep her learning curve was when she first encountered hot drinks after nearly two decades of nothing but cold. “Here,” she says, taking pity on her old nemesis. “You’ve got to blow on it to cool it off. Like this.” She bends and purses her lips, cascading cool air over the surface of the hot BARI drink.

The outer edges of Harrow’s ears turn pink. Gideon realizes all at once that Harrow’s not looking at her like she’s a nemesis at all. If Gideon had to classify the look Harrow’s giving her, it’s more akin to how the handful of fellow Cohort recruits she’s hooked up with since enlisting looked at her right before they hooked up. The idea of that look coming from Harrowhark of all people makes her palms sweat. “Harrow,” she says tenderly, as one peels the hard rind from a soft fruit, “Why did you join the Cohort, really?”

Harrow worries her lower lip between her sharp, bone-white teeth until it starts to tear and bleed. “I missed you,” she confesses, dredging the words up painfully like vomit.

Gideon nods as if this were a perfectly normal and comprehensible thing for her oldest - and only, really - enemy to say and not the most unfathomable thing she’s heard in her entire life. “You should aim better next time.”

Harrow turns livid at that. Rather than using her words like a normal human being (because when has Harrow ever done anything like a normal human being?), she snatches up her mug with the expression of someone who’s just taken a step out onto a tightrope only to end up tredding in flaming dogshit. She pivots with a dramatic whirl that doesn’t quite work without her flowing black robes and takes a sip of her coffee as she goes. She stops short and her eyes widen in the universal expression of ‘holy fuck that’s way more delicious than I expected.’

Gideon grins as she heaves herself up onto the counter, sliding across and landing lightly on the other side in a super cool move that would sweep any girl off her feet (even if the girl in question were a dessicated bone witch). “Oh, fuckin’ get over here,” she says, pulling Harrow into a hug that nearly causes her to drop her mug in alarm. “I missed you, too.”

“Well... shit.”

Javier falls back in his seat as he gives up after his tenth attempt to get his car started. You watch as his chest rises and falls in a large breath, his fingers slowly trailing down the sides of the wheel. His head finally lolls over to face you, his dark gaze already begging to be forgiven.

“It looks like we’re gonna have to walk, compañera.” Javier’s voice is thick with shared amusement and frustration.

“It’s alright,” you assure him, starting to reach for the door handle. “It’s warm out tonight, anyway.”

“It’s humid,” Javier corrects you. “Which means we’ve got a good chance of getting poured on.”

You shrug, stepping out of the car and shutting the door behind you. Your eyes quickly glance over the darkened office, completely vacant now that you and Javier have finished your late-night shift. When you look back to Javier, you give him a mischievous smile. “I hope it does.”

Javier scoffs, starting to lead the trek back to your apartment building. Thankfully, it’s not too many blocks away from the office, though you’re not in any kind of a rush. You and Javier had finished your work a lot sooner than expected, and you’re still wide awake. You’re practically buzzing at Javier’s side as you start walking.

“I didn’t know your car was starting to eat shit,” you joke. “I would’ve offered to drive had I known.”

“She’s been on her last legs for a while, now,” Javier confesses. “I just wasn’t ready to give her up—but I guess I gotta let her go, now.”

“Is she the only car you’ve had down here?” you continue your interrogation. Javier nods. You click your tongue as you playfully land a friendly hand on his shoulder. “I’m so sorry for your loss, Peña.”

Javier chuckles, giving you an amused smile. “I think I’ll be alright, compañera.”

You also chuckle, but stop when you spot something reflecting the light of a nearby streetlamp on the side of the street. You feel a rush of mischief run through as you raise your brow at Javier, watching his expression morph into puzzlement as you suddenly take off in the direction of the object. You pick up the metal scooter that’s barely holding itself together, obviously having been abandoned by someone beforehand.

“Watch this,” you say, giggling as you balance yourself on the scooter. You give a push of one foot and let it join the other, taking off in a wobbly fashion along the edge of the road. You’re practically zooming thanks to the slight decline in elevation of the road, but curse under your breath when you spot a large trashcan coming up ahead. Unable to stop easily, you practically leap off of the scooter, tripping a few steps as it clangs loudly into the metal can just seconds later.

Immediately after, you spill into a large fit of laughter, holding your stomach as you lean over the empty road. You stumble back over to where Javier’s also stopped walking, his body doubled over as you hear his deep rumbles of laughter roaring from his chest. Your heart flutters at the sound—you’ve never heard him laugh so hard before. When you’ve both finally caught your breath and Javier stands up straight again, you see him shake his head at you. “Eres una idiota,” Javier jokes, falling back into step with you as you continue walking again.

“I know,” you giggle, unable to keep the smile off your lips as you further observe the way Javier’s face is practically shining with amusement. After a few moments of comfortable silence, save for the occasional car that rolls by or sound of a nighttime insect, you catch his gaze and let your smile grow. “I like your laugh.”

Javier raises an eyebrow at you, and you see his gaze sparkle with a new light as he smiles just a bit wider. “¿Sí, compañera?”

You nod, biting back your smile as you look ahead again. “I wish I could hear it more often.” Your gaze falls back to Javier, and you watch as he parts his lips to say something else.

He’s cut off, however, by a roll of thunder—which is almost magically followed by a few, large raindrops starting to fall around you. It progressively moves towards a downpour, and you start to walk faster along with Javier to escape it.

“Shit, I didn’t actually think it’d start raining!” you exclaim above the sound of the rain hitting the street around you, watching as Javier’s lips start to curl up into a slightly-amused smile.

“I thought you wanted it to,” Javier jokes, chuckling as you flash him a dirty look. He gives you a once-over, observing the fact that you’re only in your three-quarter-sleeved button-up facing the pouring rain. “You don’t have a jacket?”

You shake your head at him. “I didn’t know it was going to rain—or that we’d be walking through it.”

Javier grimaces, shrugging his leather jacket off and putting it around your shoulders. “Take mine.”

You take the sides of the jacket gingerly in your fingers to secure them on your shoulders, looking in awe back up at Javier. He’s now left to be soaked in his short sleeve button-up, but the only concern you can see in his eyes is for you. You can smell the heavy scent of cologne mixed with smoke on his jacket as it envelopes you, and you try to ignore the way the rain makes his shirt stick to his body so clearly, giving you a sculpture of what lies underneath.

Unable to resist the fluttering in your heart or the tension between the two of you any longer, you stop in your tracks, waiting for Javier to notice. He stalls as well, looking at you with wide eyes. “What’re you doing?” Javier questions, raising his voice above the rain and a roll of thunder as he gestures to the building that you can now see further down the street. “We’re almost—.”

He’s cut off by you grabbing the collar of his shirt to pull his body against yours, your mouth claiming his as you kiss him with passion. It’s something that’s been brewing between the two of you for much longer than just tonight, and the feeling rivals the flashes of lightning that flicker through the stormy sky above. Javier’s hands reach for the sides of your face as he deepens the kiss, seeming to forget the way the rain is touching just about every inch of your bodies and soaking you to the bone as you lose yourselves in the feeling of the moment. When you pull away for air, you’re both smiling at each other, and you offer a soft chuckle before remembering the situation around you. “Do you want to come over for some soup at my place?”

Javier chuckles back. “I’d love to, hermosa,” he responds, securing one of your hands in his as you both jog off to close the distance to the apartment building.

Sick, our nature demanded to be healed; fallen, to be raised up; dead, to rise again. We had lost the possession of the good; it was necessary for it to be given back to us. Closed in the darkness, it was necessary to bring us the light; captives, we awaited a Saviour; prisoners, help; slaves, a liberator. Are these things minor or insignificant? Did they not move God to descend to human nature and visit it, since humanity was in so miserable and unhappy a state?71

You don’t know where you are. Worse, you don’t know when you are. 

Your head feels dizzy, eyes bleary. Your skin is flushed and dry despite the humidity around you. More than anything, you long for a large glass of water, if not a massive pool to plunge yourself into to wake up your sense again. The symptoms are all there, the way people said it would be. There’s no mistaking what’s happened to you.

It’s the sort of you thing you’d always considered your friends anxious for fearing happening to them. You laughed lightly at each of them who purchased a KeeperBand. 

“Did you know an estimated 73 percent of timequake victims remain lost in time due to forgetting their time of origin?” You can still recall the advertisement asking. “Never risk losing track of when you belong,” it promised. You chalked it up to little more than an expensive watch with a pause button feature. 

Now, as you glance at your bare wrist, you wish that you had been a bit more anxious.

You don’t know how long you walk through the dark and fog, seeking out a landmark. Or any sign of other people at all. All you can make out are shadows, some smooth and others in sharp angles of ruins. Whenever this is, you hope it’s far away from when you belong. 

It feels as if hours have passed, like there should be some sign of a sun ready to rise by now. The sky remains just as dark. Your goal shifts from finding help to simply finding somewhere to rest. 

That’s why you trace your steps back along the rocky path until you’re at the mouth of a cave you had passed by without much thought earlier. 

To your dismay, a search from some safe-seeming corner at the back of the cave turns to a discovery you hadn’t asked for. The rough stone walls change, smoothing out to metal. You keep close to one side and try to step lightly. Still, every footfall echoes against the metallic tiles. 

Eventually, the hallway lets out to a large, crowded space. Piles of boxes make the room feel bigger and cramped at the same time. In the center of the room sits a strange device, tall with rusted arms outstretched to the platform around it. Several screens line the middle column of the device, flickering with static. 

You go towards the machinery, uneasy but hopeful that maybe this might provide some kind of escape. Or at least some kind of answer. Just as you’re about to reach out towards one of the panels of buttons, you’re startled into a quick spin around by a voice that asks, 

“Lost?” 

Your body tenses, heart quickening. Sat cross-legged atop one of the wooden boxes is a man, appearing around your age, with a grin on his expression that does suit this place, black hair a mess over the white band of cloth tied around his forehead. You’re not sure what to make of him. Nothing about him seems altogether threatening, but you take a step back all the same. 

“I’m guessing yes,” he continues, legs unfolding and hopping down from the container. “Most people that mean to come here usually do so armed.” 

“Look, I don’t know what this place is,” you tell him quickly, ��I’m not trying to… I don’t want anything of yours.” It’s the best you can come up with. 

He looks you over again. “Timequake?” he asks. You nod, and suppose that might have been a better thing to mention directly yourself. “This ever happened to you before?” 

“Not to anyone I actually know.”

“Ah.” He passes by you to one of the console screens of the odd machine, pulling up a window of code that looks like gibberish to you. “I’m guessing you’ve come a long way to get here then.” 

You take a small step back, off the machine’s platform for a wider breadth of space between you and him. “When is here, anyway?”

He looks over to you and, as if it were the simplest explanation possible, he tells you, “The end of the world.” 

“What?”

“I know.” He nods, nearly solemnly, save for a slight upwards tilt in his lips. “And when did you come from?”

You start with a confident, “It was…” and then stare at him in wordless awe. How is it possible that you can’t answer that question? 

The thought must be obvious in your expression. “The larger time increment you’re displaced, the quicker it is to forget details,” he tells you. “You probably aren’t from a time that’s figured that out exactly yet, given.”

“Oh, fuck.” What else is there to say? 

He turns more towards you and leans against the machine. “I can help you, if you want.” 

Your brow crinkles, lips tucking into a line. “Why would you do that?”

“What? A guy can’t smuggle some stuff through time and still want to be a good samaritan?” A small, bubbly chuckle follows his words. It’s not the sort of tone you’d expect at all from someone confessing to any kind of crime. But he says it so easily, like it is nothing to worry about at all. 

“It does sound contradictory.” 

He shrugs, and turns his attention back to the screen. “Well, you know where to find me if you do want help!” The strangest thing, probably, is that he doesn’t sound smug or teasing about it at all. From the best you can sense, it’s a genuine offer. 

And if what he says about this being the end of time is true, it might be the only offer you’ll come across. 

You take a deep breath to steady yourself and step back up onto the round platform. He looks to you once again, a bright kind of curiosity on his face. 

“What’s your name?” you ask. “If you’re going to help me, we should start with actual introductions.” 

He reaches up and pulls at one of the necklaces hanging down beneath the fabric of his shirt. Between his fingers is a round, silver charm, slightly tarnish and engraved with something you’re too far away to make out. He does you the favor of reading it aloud: “MK.”

“Okay… MK,” you repeat and hold out a hand to him. “Where do we start?”
