Buck has long since resigned himself to the fact that his sleep schedule is well and truly fucked. 24 hour shifts were all well and good in his 20s, but now at the ripe old age of 32 he collapses as soon as he gets home like someone’s hit a hard reset switch, and he never knows if he’ll wake up in an hour or ten. Frankly, he doesn’t know how Bobby is still upright, though he’d never say it to his face.

So, blinking awake on a Sunday (maybe) morning (possibly) in June, he has no idea how long he’s been down. His eyes are glued shut, so probably a while. He throws an arm out and it smacks immediately into Eddie, who grunts.

“Morning?” It’s sort of a greeting and sort of a question, and he feels weight shift on the bed as Eddie cranes to check the clock.

“9:15.”

“Mm.” Buck scrubs a hand over his face and blinks open his eyes. Eddie looks like he's just been taken out of one of those vacuum seal bags you pack your clothes in when you're trying to save space in a suitcase, and Buck has to lean over and kiss him about it.

"Oh my god, Buck," Eddie mumbles, pushing him away with his whole hand smushed against his face. "Did you eat roadkill for dinner?"

"Don't you insult Bobby's casserole like that." Buck goes for Eddie's neck instead but ends up yawning against his jugular. "Fuck. I'm gonna get coffee." He starts to roll over but Eddie slings an arm around him and pulls him back down.

"It's being taken care of," he says, burying his face into Buck's shoulder. "Act surprised."

Buck makes a questioning face at him, but his boyfriend is busy being half asleep again and nuzzling his pec, so he just lays there squinting at the ceiling and wondering if Eddie has developed some sort of coffee based telekinesis. He's started thinking about practical applications in the field (does it have to be hot coffee? How big a container can it be in? Can they just start remotely dumping venti iced lattes on fires?) when Chris enters the room, carefully transporting two mugs. Eddie flops onto his back and then flops upright, passing the mugs to Buck and pulling Chris down for a kiss on the forehead.

"Happy father's day," Chris says, only scrunching his nose a little at the display of affection.

"Thanks, kid," Eddie smiles at him, already flapping a hand at Buck to get his coffee back. He takes a sip as Chris leaves the room again, and Buck holds onto the other warm ceramic in his hands, suddenly feeling very awake and a little awkward.

"Uh- I can head out, if you want."

Eddie squints at him over his coffee. "Why?"

Buck waves towards the kitchen. "You know, if you and Chris want to spend the day together."

Eddie's still making a face at him. "Buck-"

Whatever he was going to say is interrupted by Chris returning, even more carefully balancing a tray of food in his arms. He sets it down on the bed and Eddie eagerly pulls it over, grabbing a waffle piled high with whip cream.

"Cards first!" Chris admonishes, sitting at the foot of the bed.

"Oh, o-kay, okay," Eddie laughs, picking up one of two folded pieces of paper tucked under the plates.

"Two cards!" Buck grins, stretching his foot under the covers to nudge Chris. "Your dad's a lucky guy."

Chris makes the same face his dad had just been making. "One's for you, Buck."

Buck's pretty sure his face makes the exact expression of the emoticon with the colon and the capital o. "Me?"

"Yeah," Chris says, like obviously Buck gets a father's day card, duh, don't be stupid. Buck kind of just freezes there, rebooting, until Eddie grabs the paper and swaps it with the mug still clutched in his hand and he looks down to read it automatically.

On the front, in suspenseful italic, are the words "When Rodan flaps his wings…" and Buck coughs out a laugh, remembering last month's Godzilla night where they'd stayed up way too late watching movies while Eddie was covering for someone on B shift. He opens the card and doesn't start crying immediately, thank you, he lasts a few seconds with dry eyes. On the inside is a full spread drawing of the fiery pteranodon looming over the city of Los Angeles. On the bottom left a firefighter stands on a rooftop, blasting him in the face with a hose. Written in the sky is "... Buck saves the day!"

"Told you he'd cry," Eddie says, smug. Buck tries to glare at him but he's just a big blur through the tears.

"You're so mean to me," he croaks, reaching out blindly for moral support from Christopher, the superior Diaz. Chris shuffles over and wraps him in a hug which, oh boy, doesn't help the crying situation. "Th-thank you," he manages to get out, clinging to the kid a little and fully expecting him to pull away all huffy and teenager-like.

Chris just rests his head against Buck's. "You've been my dad, like, forever," he says quietly, and, really, it's too early in the day to be put through a trash compactor like this. "I probably should have made more cards to make up for the other years."

Buck makes a sound like "gk!" and feels Eddie's hand on his side. "Well, we don't want him to actually keel over. That would be an embarrassing ambulance ride."

Buck laughs, and it sounds wet and gross, and then kisses the side of Chris's head, which probably feels wet and gross. "I love you, so much."

"I know," Chris says, grinning. "I love you too, Buck. Eat your waffle. I put sprinkles on it!"

Buck laughs again, and pulls Chris up onto the bed with them to share. He's big, growing up so quick, and two grown men and a teenager are a pretty cramped fit on a queen mattress, but none of the three members of this family that Buck somehow, miraculously belongs to minds the proximity.

"Happy father's day, Buck," Eddie says, eyes heart twistingly soft as he kisses Buck's cheek. "Glad you're here with me. With us."

Buck makes a face as his eyes start stinging again, and covers Chris's eyes so he can lean forward and kiss Eddie on the mouth, quick. "No place I'd rather be."

Canon!Madison: Hey, so did anyone catch that son of a bitch Jonah in your 'verse? He's still at large over here.

Abraxas!Madison: Ugh, of course he would. But no, he's dead on our side. Got popped like a grape in a microwave, but not before he basically caused the creation of a Ghidorah-human hybrid race.

Canon!Madison: That's... you guys have evil lizard people? Bernie's gonna have a field day with that.

Abraxas!Madison: Well, not all of them are evil, I know at least one in Monarch custody is really chill. She's started to do Vtubing in her spare time.

Canon!Madison: I kinda wish things were as interesting as that in our 'verse, right now the only Titans really doing anything are Godzilla and Kong. The going theory is that supposedly the Big Guy's put all the others back into hibernation because dealing with them is too much of a hassle.

Abraxas!Madison: Oh, lame. Over here the Titans are all active and have their own separate territories, but they all answer to Godzilla or Mothra as Alpha Titans. Kinda like medieval hierarchies or something.

Canon!Madison: My god, I'd give anything to live in your 'verse! When the world's not in danger it's all so boring and Dad wants me to go to college and meet some guy and be normal. At least on your side there's more interesting stuff to talk about than relationships and shit.

Kaiju Week in Review (October 23-29, 2022)

Marvel published Ultraman: The Mystery of Ultraseven #3 (of 5) on Wednesday. Kaiju-Ultra combat dominates this one, with Hayata and Ultraman debating how to handle the out-of-control Ultraseven as well. I've fallen off with a lot of Ultra Series stuff, including the post-Z shows (hence Decker's absence from these reviews), but this reimagining of the classics continues to impress. Watch for the Pestar cameo!

Rumble has finally come to Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S. Made for theaters (the first trailer played before Sonic the Hedgehog) but banished to Paramount+ last December, this kaiju wrestling comedy went completely overlooked by genre fans. Maybe now it'll get its due. I quite enjoyed it—as a sports movie, it's pure formula, but as a monster movie it's something new. And yes, the wrestling organization has the same name as the old fanfic series on Godzilla Tower. I actually bought the artbook as prep for a podcast episode I recorded last year that never aired, so expect more posts on this one soon.

By the way, this is actually last week's news—I just didn't know about it until I found the DVD on a cart of new materials at my library.

Godzilla vs. Kong won the Saturn Award for Best Film Visual Effects, beating out a crowded field thanks to an almost two-year eligibility period. This is familiar territory for both monsters: Godzilla (1998) and King Kong (2005) were among the previous victors. Deserved over Top Gun: Maverick? Probably not, but I dunno why Maverick was one of the nominees to begin with. It was also nominated for Best Science Fiction Film, losing to Nope.

Varan won a remarkably intensive Godzilla Store poll earlier this year to become the next Movie Monster Series figure (Super Mechagodzilla placed second again after losing to Gorosaurus last year), and said figure has finally been revealed. It'll go on sale November 3. Other Godzilla Store-exclusive vinyls can be ordered through Buyee, so I expect this one will be too.

The upcoming CG short Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex is also getting MMS figures. No details yet that I could find, but since the film premieres November 3rd, I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped that day too.

Godzilla Battle Line is teasing Evangelion Unit 01 as the next new Battle Piece, a rare EvaGoji collaboration that won't require traveling to or importing from Japan to experience. That would cover three of the four films in the Shin series... can a giant Kamen Rider be far behind?

Godzilla's 68th birthday is next Thursday, and since reporting on all the U.S. tie-in screenings after the fact won't do anyone any good, I'm going to list them all now:

But if you're like me and already have commitments that evening, why not check out @spacehunter-m's reconstruction of the 1956 German theatrical version of Godzilla instead? It premiered in West Germany just a few months after Godzilla, King of the Monsters! opened in the States, but it's actually based on the Japanese cut (just 13 minutes shorter). English subtitles are included.

Erika Kinokami

First post of the Godzillaverse that I like to call Biola: Monster Genesis! For a start, who better to show off than the "series'" main protagonist and namesake of this gojiverse, Erika Shiragami Kinokami

Born 2009 to Genchiro Kinokami of the Typhon organization, an organization dedicated to the study of the giant organisms known as kaiju, she was already a genetic test from birth, having genes from multiple plants in her genome as a test run of giving humans photosynthetic capabilities (as a result, her skin has a bit of a greenish tone). Other than the photosynthesis and her lifelong friend being a robot⏤an AI-driven prototype of the Tezcatlipoca unit (T-units for short) technically designated as RD-A10N3 but given the name Jet Jaguar from Erika mispronouncing the Aztec deity's name⏤her life was fairly normal... until very recently.

While out on the field in a military effort against both a particularly aggressive hive of the giant neuropteran Meganula and a mated pair of volant kaiju given the name "Rodan", Erika (and Martin, an upstart kaiju-themed influencer tagging along) ran afoul of a Meganula larva within the cave systems being explored. The insect struck Erika in the abdomen with its claw, grievously wounding her. The Meganula would've killed her after that had it not been for the third Rodan, a smaller, sneaky male resembling a female, breaking through the wall and piercing the Meganula with its long, barbed tongue. For a split second, it looked to see the two other small creatures in there, but then had its attention grabbed by the controlled eruption of the nearby Mt. Aso where the Rodans had nested. As the "Faeder Rodan" flew off to try and save its mate. Jet Jaguar arrived and carried Erika off to safety.

After being brought to a Typhon facility on the remote Odo Island, Erika then undergoes a radical new treatment to help save her life. She's treated with an experimental kind of stem cell therapy incorporating cells and DNA from a kaiju whose emergence nearly 70 years ago spurred the formation of Typhon the following year; a kaiju whose power made it only deserving of the title "King of the Monsters". That beast's healing properties mean that Erika Kinokami now had a third genetic component: Gojira. After waking up, Erika seemed pretty fine at first (besides her not needing glasses anymore, being able to see ultraviolet light, and the healed up wound resembling plant resin), but she would be kept there to make sure there weren't any side effects. The next day, Erika was feeling a bit restless, and Jet suggested they go out and walk for a bit as some nature therapy. It was nice and they even found a cave system with 100% less maneating insects and plenty of nest subterranean biodiversity… but then the irradiated GNA (Godzilla DNA) really started kicking in.

Erika felt nothing at first, but then Jet pointed out that her face was getting pale and even a bit greenish. Erika dismisses that comment at first before Jet adds a small little elaboration: he means greenish even compared to her normal, chloroplast-infused skin tone. Then seeing a more vibrant green creeping up her arms, Erika bluntly agrees that they need to go back Now, and they make off. As they make their way to the cave entrance, Erika not only has leaves sprouting from the base of her neck and her hips (her hair was also gradually melding into leaves), but she starts growing from her human height of 5'1" (155 cm). Once they're at the cave entrance, she was actually too big to fit through, but ended up breaking through the entrance from her growing too big for it, finally stopping at a final height of 20 meters (and also giving a scream of terror and confusion afterwards). Jet, of course, called for help and Erika's dad and other Typhon personnel arrived. She was then brought back to the facility and later filled in on the whole GNA situation, but not before another party came by from the other side of the hill the cave entrance was on: Godzilla.

Strangely (although the maser tanks and other military units brought in preparation for the detected approach of another kaiju were hidden in the forest), the 50-meter dinosaur was noticeably unaggressive for the encounter, walking up to Erika, closely observing her with some minor vocalizations, and then leaving.

For Erika, the experience was even stranger. To her, Godzilla's face looked perplexed, showing more emotion than any photos or video footage of the Monster King she had seen before this day, and she could have sworn she heard a voice coming from him... a voice that called her a... "Biollante"?

Rodan crawls from his volcano--usually he’d sleep for weeks at a time, before getting up to eat, but, his rest was cut short due to his overall stress over the past couple of years. The amount of strain on his heart due to everything, and the fact that Rodan wasn’t quite sure how he was still alive, breathing felt..suffocating, and it took a couple of minutes of deep breaths, which deep down had felt like an eternity. It had put the fire pterosaur kaiju in such a panicked state that the more he panicked, the worse it had gotten.

Placing his talons on his chest, pushing against it, the pain had begun to worsen at a rate that worried Rodan to utter death, granted not as bad, he knew the process of getting rid of this, but it was mentally draining, and combined with their lack of self preservation, Rodan was surely just going to let go one night, but.. surprisingly, this time wasn’t the time they’d give into the light at the end of his tunnel vision.

As the minutes passed by, Rodan felt his entire body grow weak, his mind was spinning rapidly, and they felt like this was the end, numbness began to take over as they laid upon the grass in the fields left alone by Isle De Mara’s people, Rodan had felt it, his body temperature had been lowered significantly, he was freezing cold, and had no clue on how to even.. stop all of this. Placing his trust in his own abilities, Rodan closed his eyes, and stopped thinking about all of the pain he was in, just.. focusing on his breathing.

In. Out, In. Out. Rodan continues this for what feels like a full hour, though it is only a fraction of that time, the fire kaiju gasps for air, and it finally comes through, as they lay there in silence, waiting for the pain to subside, he can only really do one thing, and that would be to crawl to the edges of the volcano, regaining his ability to regulate his body temperature. This is getting too often for Rodan’s liking.

They squeaked out, a hushed tone emitted from their throat, Rodan was.. true about that, he was getting old, and thanks to the pressure and stress he’s constantly putting on his body, he’s.. probably not got too much longer on his life. Good.. There’s no more waste of a kaiju on earth, then.. hah..

9. What are your file name conventions

Lot's of times, it's just the subject name but shortened? So like the Sin Gomorrah sculpt im doing in Z-Brush is just labeled 'SinGom'. It'll change if there are different versions. My Rodan magnet was like 'RodanResize', 'RodanRemesh', 'RodanFINAL' etc etc. It's usually super specific about the thing in it and what version it is.

11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAT A QUESTION TO ASK AND WHAT AN ANSWER I WISH I COULD GIVE

It varies, but it goes between music (that's a rabbit hole on it's own), video essays on YouTube, funny haha gaming compilations from a few different channels, and sometimes podcasts (only like, 2 tho lol). I've done audiobooks once?? but haven't gotten back into. I should clarify, this is only whenever I am sculpting/doing 3D print stuff. If it's writing (that's art so) it's always either music or silence...only because I forget to turn on music and I'm in my groove lol

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated

I honestly don't think I have an answer for this only because I haven't posted a lot or done enough art for one to feel underated?? I guess? When I was more frequent on Instagram and posting art there and actually well...DOING the art in my field, not just writing, everything did reall well? I'm happy with a lot of stuff that I did.
