We’ll go by looming deadline: I am the gaming coordinator for Leprecon 47 – a virtual convention happening March 20-21. My end of it is at the end, starting 5pm on March 21. To whit: I am still seeking game-masters to run one-shots over Zoom with players who would not reliably have copies of said game in hand. This creates some challenges I’ll cover later. Ended up cancelling my DDB subscription.

WotC promised to take some of the offending points out in their final version of their OGL update, but since it seems the documents leaked were not really being considered as draft and that their current attitude seems to be "wait a bit and then we'll see if we can just go ahead with it anyway"... well, I wanted to make it clear I'd only be coming back IF the new OGL seems acceptable to me.

I'll be honest, this is annoying because DDB is a convenient service, and I've got several books on there already so it's going to make things more complicated for the DnD Clubs and my home games... but at the same time, well. There's a reason I got PDFs of everything I bought on there.

Guess we'll see how it goes.

BOEL 2022 - dimitri vs julius

The spell hits its mark, and Dimitri’s labored breath is audible even at a distance as the poison in the sticky tar-like residue works its way across his back. Instead of returning the attack at once though, he stops (sensibly, to catch his breath, but Julius does not consider that right away) and admires his power. The second spell that had begun to spark to life in Julius’ fingertips fades with his guard.

“A good eye you have.” He drinks up the praise. “In my homeland, I am unmatched in battle.” Past tense often forgotten, he capitalizes on the moment to bask in a former glory. It is, however, his weakness, and his opponent is sharp enough to see it the instant it appears. The pegasus darts forward, and before Julius can duck back for cover behind the tree he has endeavored to keep between them, there’s a stinging pain across his ribs. One hand grasps instinctively for his side, the other knocking back at Dimitri with enchanted shield as he stumbles out of the way of feathered wings, and the mischief that had played across his face turns dark and smoldering .

Dimitri takes damage from the Fire Shield: -0.5HP Dimitri’s HP: 2.5/5

Julius’ HP: 3.5/5

“So your aim is to flatter me into letting down my guard, is that it?” His palm comes away wet with blood, but he spares it only a glance as a spell forms anew above it. “No more playing then.”

Julius uses Death! Roll: 7 + 2 = 9, Barely hit! [-0.5HP] + Poison Strike [-0.5HP] Dimitri’s HP: 1.5/5

"Ugh!” The next attack only grazed his body- lacking much of the intensity the first held, but it still made his entire body scream in pain. Magic was useful- wonderful even, essential to their lives, but when used as a weapon it was terrifying. It wasn’t the same as being struck by an axe or cut with a sword, it burned, it electrified, it froze, it melted, it did just so much.

Grimbelle attempted to readjust her flight, so that there would be even more distance between the prince and the mage- but Dimitri was quick to bring himself back on their previous course, whispering a soft ‘it’s ok’ that only the mare could hear.

“I...what? I never...intended to flatter you into lowering your guard.” His breathing was laboured, blond eyebrows knit into a mild, pained frown. His lips however, presented a small smile. “I was being...genuine. Your skill truly is...outstanding.” Against his body’s protests, Dimitri held out the lance once more, feeling a faint wave of warm healing embrace his body.

Blessed Lance heals Dimitri for +0.5HP | Dimitri HP= 2/5

It wasn’t much- not nearly enough. Although he had managed to win the previous round he still thought his technique had been far too sloppy, he has been far too weak. How is he supposed to lead the Blue Lions- let alone Faerghus - to victory if he can barely pull through a mock battle in the Academy?

The pegasus shudders as she feels Dimitri’s hold tighten and tense up.

Dimitri counters! RollD20= 16, hit! | Julius HP= 2/5

“Sorry.” Grimbelle dives again, and Dimitri aimed for the same spot- Julius’ side, or his ribs. It was cruel to aim at an already injured area, but at the same time Dimitri didn’t want to hurt Julius too much...he didn’t want to lose either. It was either the mage or him. The weapon hit its target in a solid blow, enough to do its job. Gliding right past Julius, the pegasus took a sharp turn for a followup attack.

It wasn’t his best attempt. He hasn’t grown used to Grimbelle’s speed- and his body still suffered the effect of Julius’ previous attacks on him, his muscles slow and pained, far too much for the Blessed Lance’s healing to patch up quick enough. After his attempts, the pegasus was back on the sky- seemingly aprehensive, but Dimitri wouldn’t yield, his eyes trained on Julius from above.

The final round had finally begun- and although the prince was already steeling himself for the next battle a small part of him wished for the break time to be just a little longer. He had managed to win, but by a hair's width, his body still feeling the successful strikes Julius managed to land on him.

He physically held himself from groaning as he looked down and spotted another mage in his range. It felt as if the Goddess wished to mess with him in this particular edition of the mock battle, sending him the exact type of opponent he'd rather avoid crossing ways with.

Soren, a powerful and mysterious mage and tactitian from the Golden Deer house. Being busy with his own battles didn't stop Dimitri from catching glimpses of the powerful fire spells exploding around the field, some of which were surely Soren's doing.

He gulped down dry. I need to get rid of him as fast as possible.

Dimitri attacks! RollD20+4= 19, hit! | Soren HP= 4.5/6

"-Good afternoon, Soren." Now that he thought about it, he should've greeted the other before diving from the sky and swiping at his ribs with his lance.

This won't do, I'm letting my emotions take the reins. There is no rage to be found here, just a friendly battle.

"Oh, uhm...sorry about that."

[Dimitri HP= 5/5]

Soren wasn’t one for pleasantries, especially not after an attempt to turn him into a Soren kibab.

Dimitri always seemed to have his manners about him. How irritating.

“Don’t be.”

Soren Counter Roll: 12-2, 10, hit. -2HP. Dimitri HP: 3/5

Though Dimitri was on a pegasus, the eruption of magic still burned his leg.
