One thing I absolutely love about this franchise is how the characters include their respective dragons into literally every conversation both casual and serious. It's never just, "Where is Hiccup?" It's always, "Where are Hiccup and Toothless." It's never, "The ingredients are in your satchel." It's, "The ingredients are in Toothless' saddle bag." Not just, "How are you holding up?" but always, "How are you guys holding up?" It's not, "How about an impartial judge for the Thorsten challenge? For the love of Thor take me with you." Instead it is, "How about a couple of impartial judges for the Thoston challenge? For the love of Thor, take us with you."
In most other media that involve an animal best friend, this is usually absent or not displayed as thoughtfully, the animal is usually missed in discussion or not included in such dialogue pieces but Httyd never does that. Dragons are always treated and included as equal individuals instead of just pets and I love that.

I have 2 questions to ask if that's alright :>
1. What is your favorite dragon from HTTYD, and, as a bonus, what would be a close second? (My favorite personally is the Skrill)
2. What are your thoughts on the live action How To Train Your Dragon movie coming soon?
call me basic af but my favorite dragon is the nightfury, they just look so cool and cute I love them so much, a close second though has to be the bewilderbeast or the stormcutter
As for my thoughts on the live action movie, I'm quite excited about it. I think it looks good and I love how toothless was done, in my opinion he looks very cute :>

The funniest thing about going through your blog is that my 6-year-old cousin forced me to watch the entirety of rtte literally last week and thus I know everything you’re posting about but only as of last week
OH MY GOSH and how did you like it???? How hard did you cry???
Did you know Dagur from before (Riders of Berk/Defenders of Berk) or were you thrown cold into his character?
LISTEN this fandom adores Viggo. We easily call him the best-written villain in all of Httyd and we are right.
Also the twins are so cool, Snotlout and Hookfang have my heart, and Hiccstrid Season 4 is just a peak experience. We as a fandom have lived through loving Chicken and Smidvarg with all our hearts, we have delivered scrap metal and mused about leg jokes. Getting to know new dragons, plus the story tying into Httyd2 was so, so satisfying as well.
It was terrific to be there when it all first came out. But it's never too late to join the fandom! Seriously, tell me, what was your favorite part??
Here, have my favorite nostalgic edit as a treat!

Hello?
So I noticed a huge influx of followers, I kind of thought they were all bots, but after seeing some other posts from some of the blogs these accounts were following (thanks @bob-artist ) I think some of you may just be super new accounts and tumblr recommended me? (I’m very confused rn, my posts have found some people who like the things but they haven’t gotten THAT many reblogs or notes, this is a fairly new account itself)
ANYWAY if you are a real person welcome I guess, if you’re a bot I’ve been taking measures to do my best to protect my art from ai learning software and that’s gonna keep happening. If it turns out everyone’s a bot I’m gonna feel a little silly but I’ll survive.
——————————————————————————-
So now I’m making an introduction post.
I’m Fairmer (The name is both because it’s my name in my stardew save with my sister but also cause I grew up with my dad being a farmer) I’m staying anonymous-ish for now, that may change. But being perceived on social media is scary so we are starting here.
I’m a graphic designer and illustrator living in Manitoba, who burnt out insanely upon graduation and stopped doing illustration outside of my job. I’m new to actually posting on tumblr, or honestly anywhere. Sometime I may link my portfolio here, but right now it’s under construction/being updated.
I’m also queer/bi, and have unexplained chronic pain that’s most likely from endometriosis but I keep most of my complaining about pain on my other blog.
I post mostly fanart so if you like:
- Nancy drew, PC games or otherwise. These in particular have motivated me to get back into actually drawing again.
- other games like Stardew Valley, Spiritfarer, Hollow knight, Hades, etc. (cozy games or otherwise) (also I was a teenage exocolonist except that’s gonna take me like a few business months if I decide to do art for it)
- Narnia, Lord of the rings, fantasy in general (Dnd?)
- Smosh, (current) dropout tv, starkid, tin can bros, shipwrecked, BDG,
- shows like ATLA, Ducktales 2017, ROTTMNT, The Owl house, Tangled the series, Hilda, Over the garden wall, etc.
- HTTYD franchise including riders/defenders of berk and RTTE, mostly rtte.
- like anything else, idk Barbie probably, maybe good omens or dr who? oh also I’m a theatre kid, big fan of hadestown and legally blonde.
You’ll most likely find me posting something at some point involving any of the above. I may post some originals too, but I’m not putting too much pressure on myself here.
Anyway, this is a pretty new account so I don’t have much stuff yet, but If you like my stuff you’re welcome to stay, apologies to any not-bots that attempted to follow me.
I may get into being open for commissions in the future, but for now it is what it is.
Also free Palestine

Ok so I decided to share something from RTTE that lives in my head rent free.
In the episode "Enemy of enemy", when Dagur escapes from Dragon Hunters and Hiccup thinks he betrayed him, he shouts "You're a fake Dagur! A fake! I hate you, you hear me?! I HATE YOU!" (or something similiar). That makes him turn his head back and be distraught by this sudden outburst.
Although I'm not keen of Polish Dubbing (not just in RTTE, but in general), this quote is translated a little bit differently. Hiccup says "You're a fraud, Dagur! A fraud! YOU'LL NEVER BE MY BROTHER!! I hate you!".
I think this is some pretty good angst material for a piece writing right there.
Have a good day/afternoon/evening night ^^
(I think you probably meant to send this to my main blog, @evilwriter37, but I don’t mind answering here.)
Oh that’s interesting. I had no idea about that discrepancy in translation! That would hurt Dagur a lot for sure. Angsty, angsty! Thank you for sharing!

I have f i n a l l y been allowed to get a Netflix page separate from my mom and brother seeing as we were forced to stop using the account of my mom’s friend due to the new multiple houses policy
This means it is time to rewatch RTTE without judgement from the fam and y’know. Maybe live blog >:D

Hiccup headcanon that’s already sorta canon:
He’s really good at archery. Like really good. Like can-hit-a-bullseye-while-flying-on-the-back-of-one-of-the-fastest-dragons-known-to-man good. Well, maybe not a full speed, but you get the point. When he was designing his shield, a built-in bow/catapult was the #1 thing he wanted it to have because carrying an entire bow around every mission along with the shield would be too much of a pain. He discovered this talent when he was little, but he was never that proud of it because it wasn’t a big heavy weapon so he thought it wouldn’t impress people much because his strength was his biggest weakness at that point. After he trained the dragons, he realized exact how good he was (back to the can-hit-a-bullseye-while-flying-on-the-back-of-one-of-the-fastest-dragons-known-to-man thing again). He doesn’t use this talent that much on missions because, well, he’s got a flying war machine.

I hate how Httyd 3 is just like bad fanfiction. Everything is ooc where do I even start? Toothless playing stupid games with grimmel when it would’ve taken one shot to annihilate the old man. Toothless not absolutely destroying the light fury the second she shot at Hiccup. The dragon riders just letting the mind-controlled deathgrippers get crushed and electrocuted when all they had to do is take the tube off of them and bam new dragons on their side. Why exactly is Berk overpopulated??? What happened to dragon island??? What happened to all the other islands Hiccup has on his map??? What happened to the giant mountain of empty space that they just aren’t using??? You’re telling me not ONE of those places can house the dragons??? Where exactly are their allies? I get that they weren’t there in the second movie because rtte didn’t exist yet but why not now? The third movie was supposed to be more for the ppl who have been in this fandom for years so why not give them their allies from the series? I’m just mad, this wasn’t what we wanted nor what we deserved.

My #1 post of 2022
I’ve always loved the foreshadowing in Httyd 1 in that scene when the terrible terrors were trying to steal fish from Toothless so he shoots a little fireball in its mouth and it lit the gas inside of him (or however that works idk dragon biology) and Hiccup said “not so fireproof on the inside, huh?” and then at the end of the movie in the battle with the Red Death instead of trying to hit it on the outside (because he knew that wouldn’t work) he shot it on the inside only this time it’s big dragon so big explosion. I just think that highlights how observant and resourceful Hiccup is because that was one moment on a random day that most of us would’ve forgotten and he remembered it while fighting the biggest dragon he’s ever seen in his life and used it. Hiccup is so cool.

Actually, I'm not gonna live blog this season. I don't really have anything to say about Episode one other than the geography teacher in me had a hard time suspending disbelief.
I need to remember this is a show for children with dragons so maybe certain scientific laws do not apply to RTTE universe.

I was tagged by @bea2me to list 5 TV shows that make me feel better and tag other blogs.
This is hard, actually - part of my enjoyment of media is bitching about them to high heaven (ex. The 100 lol) so it took me a minute to separate out which ones I like because they actually make me feel *good*
1. The Vampire Diaries
I mean, I do bitch heavily about this one but my girl Caroline (and Best Bitch Katherine Pierce, sue me) always pick me up. The plotlines are very teen drama angsty vampire but I appreciate that Caroline is girly and feminine, and she's *allowed* to be girly and feminine, without losing her ability to also be kinda murdery AND the emotional strength character of a lot of the show. Generally I find that female characters are either one or the other (cute shallow, loves parties, OR strong, courageous and sometines snapps and rips people's throats out). And when characters condemn her for these girly traits (outside of S1, once she had more plot), the narrative frames that as having been the *wrong thing to say.* I appreciate that.
2. The Good Place
One of very, VERY few actual comedies I can sit through without cringing and either turning it off 10 minutes in or doing shots. I loves philosophy in college and so I really appreciate the opportunities to go “wait I recognize that! That's a thing I know about!” And a show in the 21st century having a thesis that whether people are good or evil, they can become better in stable healthy environments is so uplifting.
3. DreamWorks Dragons - Race to the Edge
This one's cheating a little because it has the movies attached to it of course, so it's not *just* a show. But. Whatever. It's ALSO a show. I'm obsessed with dragons (my first tattoo was Toothless) and with flight (grew up on a steady diet of Hayao Miyazaki movies) and HTTYD was the first movie I went to see in the theater that I didn't read the book first - i just watched the trailer and went for the sake of the movie itself. There's an earlier show (pre-rtte) which is okay, but it's definitely more Y-7, while the movies (and RTTE) had that ageless feel of grown up topics made accessible to kids. It's low risk because it IS for kids so you're guaranteed a certain level of happy ending to the episodes, but i still enjoy it as an adult.
4. The Mandalorian
Funky space western with a predictable plot, a tropey hero, that one body builder lady from Deadpool, and of course the real reason we all watched it, BABY YODA. The basic feel of it reminds me of my childhood (my dad loves spaghetti westerns and of course star wars) and I love stories about scary broody types who become parents and are just all the way in for their kids. That's the good shit.
Last but DEFINITELY not least:
5. Star Trek - TOS & Next Gen
In the middle of winter when I'm low on sunlight, energy and a will to live, Star Trek comes to the rescue. The ridiculous optimism of the creators in wanting to see humanity's future the way they portrayed it coupled with the barely veiled critiques of injustices in the real world *which were able to air even back then* are things that I find really uplifting. It's of course super campy and the special effects/acting are dated (and my “I like to bitch about my shows” definitely comes up) but it's just so fun!
Honorable Mentions
Daredevil
Doctor Who
Avatar The Last Airbender
Adam Ruins Everything
Stranger Things
Tagging: @ifandomus @countesskittymeow @violetchaos @blodreina-noumou @blodkru and anyone else who wants to play!
(Anybody ever do these things and go “yeah I know people's profile pics but can't remember their usernames to save my life”??)

Some Hiccup’s Hubris + Self Discovery Thoughts
So, I don’t know how old or rehashed this is, but I’ve been going down some old HTTYD2 analysis tags (on @kingofthewilderwest’s and @peachdoxie’s blog) and coming up to the point of Hiccup’s overconfidence in his belief that changing Drago’s mind is the best solution. And I think there’s even more nuance to be discovered about his stubborn hubris in optimism here.
Hiccup knows his Dad wants to make him chief. He was virtually about to crown him that very morning, before Hiccup up and ran. He doesn’t want to be chief, because he doesn’t know how to be chief––doesn’t know how to be the great, brave, selfless man his father is. But when the Drago threat comes up and he once against feels that tension between his father’s opinion and his own, he’s trapped in that dichotomy again that has defined his entire childhood: try to be your Dad and fail miserably, or trust your gut and do the only thing you know how to do.
The catalyst that drives Hiccup to go against his father this time isn’t to save Toothless like it was in HTTYD1 (the confrontation of the Kill Ring), but to prove to his Dad that he could be chief, with the person and beliefs he is. Hiccup knows it’s coming, he can’t avoid it, so right now, in this moment of crisis, he’s going to attempt to do what he would do if he were chief: follow his gut and his beliefs. Hiccup is literally trying to stay true to himself, and to craft his own chieftainship based on what he knows he is––a peacekeeper, not a warrior. Hiccup doesn’t do speeches and planning and war.* He can’t follow his Dad’s footsteps because he knows he’ll fail. Plus, following his Dad would only make him a follower, someone like his young self when he tried to mask his beliefs with the values of others. So he has to trust his gut, despite the advice and words of others, because that’s the only path he knows works for him, and the only experience he’s had. “This is what I’m good at.” There’s so much vulnerability in that statement IMO, the way he says it, like that’s his main reason for his attempt.
He’s on a quest for personal discovery in HTTYD2, and talking to Drago to change his mind is as much a proof for his Dad as it is for himself that who he is can be translated into this new, unknown thing as chieftainship.
Obviously that doesn’t work out, but it’s because the growth he’s experience in HTTYD1––that trusting one’s instinct is good and that war van be avoided––needs now to be tempered by the maturity of taking value in the past, that sometimes purity to self and rejection of the past isn’t the best path. Sometimes you have to take the old––the ugly, the violent, the tragic, the backwards––sometimes you have to take the things you left behind and integrate them into your new worldview because the past isn’t always something to reject; the past is a reservoir of all the knowledge (good and ill) gained by those who lived longer lives than our young selves have. Our individual selves are built on our parents, our grandparents, our history. Rejecting those old values are often a good thing, but not always. We need to prove ourselves, but at some point we need to put aside who we are and look back to the things we’re not.
And HTTYD is so mature and insightful in teaching that, because so often today we think everything from the past must be rejected. But sometimes war is unavoidable. Sometimes people aren’t good, even when given the chance. Sometimes you can’t be yourself.
This is why HTTYD is such a powerful set of stories. They go so far beyond the usual children’s film tropes and reach for something even more complex and powerful.
* This is where Hiccup in HTTYD2 diverges from Hiccup in RTTE a lot. Like, Hiccup in the show can totally makes speeches and confidently take on the world. Film franchise!Hiccup is afraid of leadership. I’m sure there’s a tidy reason for it, but atm I’m just laughing my ass off at the continuity.
