So this week is going to go down as maybe the most sapphic week in animation history. It’s going to have a great case, there are so many sapphic shows or shows with prominent sapphic couples airing this week.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Here’s a quick rundown:
Yuri Is My Job!
Premiering on Crunchyroll on April 6th.
Tumblr media
Yuri is My Job! is based on a yuri manga of the same name. It follows high schooler Hime, who cares deeply about her image as sweet and helpful, even though she’s actually selfish. She accidentally injures the manager of a cafe, and agrees to work there to make up for it. But this is no ordinary cafe, it’s like a cafe dinner theater where all the waitresses play characters from a fictional high school and act out skits for the patrons. Hime’s character is supposed to be in love with one of the other waitresses’ character, but she starts actually falling for the girl. Only problem is, behind the scenes the other waitress seems to hate her.
Yeah, that sounds kind of bonkers! I can already see the story now, Hime starting out playing a role, and eventually having to legitimately earn the love of Mitsuki.
Tumblr media
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story
Season 2 premiering on Crunchyroll on Friday, April 7th
Tumblr media
Ah Birdie Wing. If you saw season one, you know just how delightful wacky this show is. It follows the stories of Eve, a golfer that plays in illegal underground golf matches for the mob, and Aoi, a golf prodigy and the new sensation of the golf world. Their lives crash into each other and the chemistry is overwhelming and immediate.
Technically Eve and Aoi aren’t canon as of the end of s1, but it’s hard to imagine that the show isn’t heading in that direction. It makes no effort to hide the fact that these two are into each other.
I’m so excited to see what season 2 has in store for these two. Birdie Wing is just a delightfully weird little show.
Tumblr media
Princess Principal: Crown Handler Chapter 3
Premieres in theaters in Japan on Friday, April 7th
Tumblr media
Alright, so this won’t be useful to a lot of people reading this, as this is only premiering in Japan this weekend. But I wanted to mention it because (a) it’ll come over to the US sometime this year, and (b) Princess Principal is awesome and I want to promote it when I can.
Princess Principal was a 12 episode series that aired in 2017, and Crown Handler is a six-part sequel OVA series.
In a nutshell, Princess Principal is a steampunk spy thriller set in an alternate universe European kingdom that has been divided by a wall, Berlin-style. It follows a team of spies, masquerading as high school girls, as they try to prevent the two sides from going to war.
I know, “why is this on a list of gay shit?” Well, because it is. Two of the main characters, Ange and Princess Charlotte, are big-time into each other and while the original series does the anime thing of “we’re only allowed to go so far with this”, the OG series has a lot of intimate scenes between the two and does end *SPOILERS* with the two of them sitting on the beach together while holding hands.
And perhaps Crown Handler, being made years later, can finally take their relationship farther.
Tumblr media
RWBY Volume 9
Volume 9 episode 8 airing on Crunchyroll on Saturday, April 8th
Tumblr media
RWBY has been ongoing, and the current volume has been airing since February, but there’ll be another episode this Saturday. Right now RWBY is in the middle of dealing with a lot of trauma, BUT, the bees are canon and dating so every episode of RWBY is now officially gay. So says me.
Tumblr media
The Owl House: Watching and Dreaming
Series finale airing on the Disney Channel on Saturday, April 8th
Tumblr media
I’M NOT READY TO LOSE THIS SHOW! 😭
*ahem* The third and final season 3 special airs on Saturday, and promises to be mega emotional and super gay.
I’m grateful that this show had a chance to finish its story, something a lot of sapphic media doesn’t get to do. But I am still pissed about it getting cancelled in the first place simply because it didn’t fit their “brand” (read: this show is too gay for Disney).
But I just know that Dana and her team put together a sensational finale.
Tumblr media
Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch From Mercury
Season 2 premiering on Crunchyroll on Sunday, April 9th.
Tumblr media
Affectionately called G-Witch, season 1 of this show was a revelation in the fall. It follows the story of Suletta Mercury, precious cinnamon roll and the most talented mobile suit pilot around, and Miorine Rembran, daughter of the president of the Benerit Group, a mega-corporation that has massive political power.
The show revolves around a school that’s mostly full of the children of powerful people. And then there’s Suletta, a nobody that just wants to be a normal girl and have a normal school life but through a series of events ends up in a mobile suit duel that she easily wins, earning her the title of Holder, which makes her Miroine’s groom.
At first, the two treat the arrangement as a business arrangement, both seeing practical value in this arranged engagement. But it’s obvious that Miorine is actually pretty into Suletta from the start, and we see Suletta slowly falling for Miorine too.
G-Witch is incredible. Part awesome mecha fights, part political intrigue, part romance between two useless girls who’d rather die that admit their actual feelings.
I am SO EXCITED for season 2!
Tumblr media
LGBTQ media hasn’t had it great as of late, with a ton of frustrating cancellations and it almost feeling like Hollywood is going backwards in terms of its commitment to giving us space to tell our stories.
But animation, both in the US and in Japan, seems to be making great strides, being our light in the dark.
All five of these shows are airing episodes this week, and Crown Handler will be in theaters this week and on streaming/blu-ray later this year. RWBY has been airing for weeks and its been the gayest volume yet. the Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady just finished airing and was wonderfully sapphic. I’m In Love With the Villainess is scheduled to air sometimes this year. And just maybe we might get Arcane season 2 before the end of the year.
I’m excited for how sapphic and yuri animation is progressing, I hope it keeps going forward.

Et tu, Tumblr?
The second season of Shadow and Bone is here, and with it, some brand new ships, so don’t forget to tag and filter your spoilers. Things are getting awfully dark in Trigun Stampede, while the first episode of Ted Lasso’s third season has given everyone a new way to pronounce “POO-peeeh.” Taylor Swift is in her Eras era, and we hope everyone who managed to get concert tickets has a blast. The My Chemical Romance reunion tour is wrapping up with two final concerts in Japan this week. Fanfic authors rejoice—there’s a whole new Hozier EP to pull fic titles from. The Sims 4 has infants now so modders are hard at work. Finally, the Ides of March came and went, and with it, a slew of polls, memes, jokes, and history lessons. This is Tumblr’s Week in Review.

Rwby character-writing analasis thing.
Its really interesting to me how much RWBY as a series has changed in the post-beacon era. And while there are many differences i could write page-long essays about,  I think most of those are a story for another day. Today i want to talk about how the post S3 change in genre has negatively affected the strength of its characterwriting. (other topics might come up tangentially but wont be the focus.)
Beacon era RWBY was a verry slow, airy slice-of-life heavy show with only a bit of action sprinkled on top, like Fondant on a cake. It gave the characters plenty of time to breathe, interact and just share a chemistry together.  I’d even go so far as to say the early show was, 80 percent slice of life (at minimum), and maybe 20% action at most. Even “fight for our life” were permeated with moments of dialogue and lighthearted character-beats. (Ruby and Weiss talking out their squables mid-beowolf fight, Weiss VS Boarbatusk cutting to ruby’s little flags for example)  But it should also be noted that, With exception to Pyrrha, who the show knew had only 3 seasons to be fleshed out. Most characters were left deliberately sort-of vauge so they can be deepened out when we get to their arcs later. (certainly they were given “goals” like “find Raven” or “redeem the Fang”, but anything more specific was left out for future writers to resolve). But in a post-beacon world, the showrunners put them into a constant no-time-for-breaks pacing has prevented much of that filling in, as the show repeatedly denied them any moment for them to just “exist” (as well as the infamous stories about how any scenes that do allow characters to do so, having all chemistry surgically removed by production to “prevent romantic spoilers”.) They cut out so much of its slice-of-life moments, that all levity happens either off-screen (Yang+Blake at the disco) or in the background of “actually important” plot-beats. (Meeting Jaune’s sister taking second-seat to a critical debrief re:Ozpin-being-full-of-shit) Not to say there’s been no progress at all on filling out the blanks left behind in their early characterisation but: Ruby’s 6 seasons of constant trauma, ended on a resounding concluding note that “she was fine as-is in S1E1″, meaning nine collective seasons of character development, amounts to a great “Status quo, but now with Laser-eyes”. Yang’s raven-issues “resolved” at the fall of haven, and did so in a rather unsatisfying in the way. Because her and Raven never really explored the abandonment issues beyond a vague “i know you dont care about me, I’ve decided the feelings mutual now Portal me to my sister/Hand me the damn relic”. (which doesnt feel like a resolution, but the show tries to frame it as a “going no-contact” resolution) Blake and Weiss have both actually had their core struggles in the world removed and tranposed onto adjacent characters instead of actually resolving their established “goals” in the world at large. (Weiss no longer wants to redeem the family business, thats Willow and Whitley’s job now, Blake no longer wants to redeem the Fang, thats Ghira and Ilia’s job). and although we now know how Ren and Nora came to be together, their atlas arc only emphasises that even they still dont know who they are themselves.  Same for Ozpin, pf whom we now know how he came to be cursed, he spent so much time dormant “regaining his oldest memories” that we only know we dont know him either.  Six additional seasons of writing for these characters, and they are all (with possible exception to yang) either back at square one, or in BW’s case have somehow stumbled themselves back to square zero. The only character that’s gotten “more” fleshed out in a way that satisfies on a narrative level is Jaune. (to the point that i cant even fault elements of the fandom criticising the show for being “The Jaune Show”) And even that is only because of how well-realised Pyrrha was at time-of-death, It really says something about the drop quality in the shows post-beacon characterisation that Pyrrha is more well-written in absentia then the entirety of the shows namesake team combined. and that is just plain tragic.

WELCOME TO THE ANGST ZONE-RWBY Volume 6x02 “Uncovered” Micksterecap(Rwby volume 6 spoilers)
Tumblr media
HEY EVERBAH-happy Saturday-WELCOME BACK TO MICKSTERECAP! I’m sure this episode will start out with  something completely norma-
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT-Cinder’s corpse!  OOOOOOOOOOOOR  IS  IT?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1:49 HUZZAH-she’s alive-OR IS SHE?!  I ask because I’m  live-blogging here, FRESH reactions today!
But seriously, TURNS OUT-this isn’t a dream sequence and she IS still alive...for NOOOOOOW! Cinder than punches her way out of the cave using what LITTLE strength she had left after her Avatar battle with Raven “Mother of the Year” Branwen, and upon escaping-SHE MEETS-
Tumblr media
2:57 SOME RANDOM LADY WITH  FOOD! Man THAT was convenient eh Cinder? Will she beg for food, or just murder her and take the basket-LET’S FIND  OU-
3:11  We need to take the relic to Atlas?
GAH-I forgot this show had multiple plotlines-CURSE YOU SHOW I LOVE!
Tumblr media
AW  NEAT-a  pointless flashback, taking place in that house that they...rented? Or did Qrow or the school own it? They never explained WHOSE house that was and it will always always ALWAYS bug me despite it never mattering in terms of plot.
BUT-said flashback ALSO features Weiss’ initial response  to going  back to Atlas!
Tumblr media
3:20
“You’ve GOT to be joking”.
I feel for  ya Weiss, escape your shit  dad in Atlas, pay a plane to leave, get attacked by  bees, get kidnapped by one of your possible love-interest’s moms, go to a school, fight bad guys, get IMPALED, get healed by ANOTHER of your possible love-interest( I said POSSIBLE, don’t hate me) ONLY to learn your going  back to the place you escaped! MAN-how she don’t have whiplash from that I don’t know HOW she wouldn’t!
They also  bring up a nice secondary reason for bringing the  relic to Atlas that I admittedly didn’t think  of-
Tumblr media
3:33
Qrow: Without the Spring  Maiden here to  seal the relic back in its vault,  its our best option.
Yang:  And I just want to say its NO-ONE’S FAULT for not having Raven  seal the  vault back up after verbally decimating her for years of neglect.
Ruby: Yang its cool, you needed a cry.
Tumblr media
3:50 We ALSO LEARN why their going to Argus in the first place, its the last Atlas  military installation that still has soldiers...and considering Adam  MOST PROBABLY hijacked the train to Argus they  BEST get  to steppin’ after this flashback is  done!
Through that they figure through  either asking nicely, or telling them they found  one of three of Jacques Schnee’s abuse victims that they could get to Atlas. After they set up the low-down, Jaune asks Oz-
Tumblr media
4:38
Jaune: Speaking of, what does it(the  relic) do, exactly?
Oz: HAHA-definitely doesn’t attract monsters-DEFINITELY not!
But seriously, turns out it can answer ANY three questions(GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENIE) once every 100 years about the present or past. NORA of course geeks out about it-
Tumblr media
5:29
Nora: CAN WE ASK FOR MORE QUESTIONS?! CAN WE ASK WHY ME AND REN HAVEN’T KISSED ON SCREEN YET?!
Ruby: Yeah what’s up with that, y’all are CLEARLY a couple!
Ren: I’m as confused as you are.
SADLY THOUGH-the magical knowledge genie can’t answer ANY of our deepest ship questions as  it turns out they were all used up before it was sealed-OR WERE THEY?! Seriously I’m legit wondering, for all we know Oz is lying.
5:40 Ruby: Well, we’ll be sure to keep it safe.
Tumblr media
Yang: GIMME THAT STUPID LAMP-I’ma SMASH IT!
Ruby: Isn’t that more Nora’s thing?
Yang: I DON’T CARE I’M JUST PISSED AT OUR STUPID PRINCIPAL IN A FARMBOY’S BODY!
But seriously everyone is LOGICALLY pissed off about the current  run of events, half their party is gone, Yang’s gonna push her motorcycle she should’ve left at home through  snow-
Tumblr media
6:11 -and they  now have ANOTHER mysterious mystic old person who REEKS  of  mysterious mysticism...AAAAAAAAAAND THE PROOOOOOOOOOOOOM IS TOMOOOOOOOOOOOORROW! Remember that joke? Practically dissapeared.
LOGICALLY pissed off at Ozpin for LYING about how the ancient relic of ultimate destiny attracted murderous chimera after them, and I’m sure he won’t pull some bull-shit line like-
Tumblr media
6:47
Ozpin: I did not lie  to you.
PFFT-look at Maria’s face here, her bullshit detectory is on POINT! Because not  informing them of the dangerous GRIMM MAGNET wasn’t a half-truth. Can we get a wizard who DOESN’T give the main heroes the run-around with their bullshit for a change, CAN WE PLEASE?!
Oz than  explains that the reason he  held  the truth  is because  he wanted to save them from anxiety and negativity, AS WELL as that being the reason for why he had it so Lionheart wasn’t revealed to be a traitor after his death, in what KINDA sounds like  a villain speech, even going  as  far  as saying “The people of Remnant  deserve more than the truth”, (because THAT line is never condescending) as WELL as saying he’s been betrayed so many times he’s straight up used to it.
Oz than  puts it all to a head when he asks where the relic is and TURNS OUT-
Tumblr media
8:32 RUBY HAS IT! Way to stay on task girl, especially in quite possibly the most STRESSFUL year of your LIFE! Remember the silly school dance? I miss that.
Ruby than LOGICALLY calls him out for saying he had so much faith in humanity in these years when the opposite is true. Its also a good thing that he didn’t lie about the relic not being able to ask questi-
Tumblr media
9:10
Oscar:HURRY...he’s trying...to stop you...he’s afraid you’ll find out...what  he’s hiding!
...well that’s ominous but as long as it turns out the relic still can’t work I say its o-
Tumblr media
9:31
Oscar: Her name...is Djinn...say her name to summon her.
...well that’s good to know but AS OZPIN SAID-the relic TOTALLY doesn’t work so saying it won’t do ANYTHI-
Tumblr media
Ruby:...Djinn?
Tumblr media
9:45 ...OKAY-time just happened to freeze, I’M SURE NOTHING ELSE OZPIN MURDERINGLY MAGICAL HAPPE-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
10:33 Djinn: Wonderful!
...OKAY-so there was a genie in it that every single person on planet Earth saw coming, but SURELY it still can’t answer 3 questi-
Tumblr media
10:40 Tell me, what knowledge do you seek?
SON OF A BITCH OZPIN-not ONLY did you lie about the lamp housing a genie whose PRIME waifu material, but ALSO lied about the questions being used up! Because just saying “Don’t use the relic to ask questions” would be SO hard you dis-trustworthy ass old man!
Well surely the next thing to happen is Team RWBYOMQ asking how to best murder Ozpi-
Tumblr media
10:47 ...or cut to a random dirty ass alley, because the writers like to TORTURE us!
Tumblr media
10:55 DAMN-Cinder, you even stole the bitch’s CLOTHES! What are you, the Terminator?!
Cinder walks through the rainy ass street of scum and villainy-UNTIL SHE SEES-
Tumblr media
11:37 RANDOM SPIDER-MAN GRAFFITI! Didn’t know Remnant had such a Marvel fan-base, NEAT!
But seriously, it turns out to be the INSIGNIA OF-
Tumblr media
PURPLE CLAD GANGSTERS! I gotta  assume they are like, REALLY good criminals becasue DEAR GOD do her two guards look silly, LOOK AT THEIR SCARFS!
Cinder than bribes her  for information-
Cinder: You’re little Miss Malachite?
Tumblr media
Malachite: Is that a fat joke or color joke? Because I’ve TRIED changing my name to Violet, but UGH the system.
She then tells Spiderlady that she’s looking for team RWBYJNR by SHOWING HER-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12:35 SEASON THREE SCREEN SHOTS! ALSO-yes those are all from the Vytal festival, for some reason I thought the JNPR pics were from the placement exam. And now we wait for the Pyrrha fans to be mad she was cropped out!
AFTER Little Miss Malachite(Her name should STILL be Violet dammit, or maybe Amethyst) gives a spooky spider speech, she tells Cinder she’ll find the team in a few days-BUT IT TURNS OUT-
Tumblr media
13:34
Chaps: Little Miss, we all ready know where they are.
Little Miss:  Oh really, we do? Why don’t you say it louder SO THE MYSTERIOUS MURDER LADY WE DON’T KNOW CAN HEAR YOU?!
Cinder: What was that?
Little Miss: Nothin’ sweetie, just makin’ creepy spider metaphors!
A THEN CUT BACK TO-
Tumblr media
13:55 MARIA-adjusting her broken ass cyborg eyes to double-check if she’s not looking at a floating Navii from Avatar.
And WOULDN’T YA KNOW IT-turns out Djinn can still answer TWO more questions this era! ALSO-
Tumblr media
14:25
Djinn: A-heh, its a pleasure to see you again old man.
AND-she’s met Oz before, PROBABLY since he asked the first question.
Ozpin pleads Ruby not to ask Djinn a question, which prompts Qrow  to ask-
Tumblr media
Qrow: Hey-
Weiss: WANNA DIE OLD MAN?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Qrow: GAH-I was just gonna tell Ruby to do what she felt was right!
Yang: Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse us if we can’t trust OLD PEOPLE RIGHT NOW!
Ruby than asks Djinn what is Ozpin hiding from them WHICH CAUSES OZPIN-
Tumblr media
14:56 ...to...attempt to  tag her...slap her...push her-WHAT WERE YOU ATTEMPTING TO DO TO MY DAUGHTER YOU WEIRD OLD MAN?!
BUT-before Ozpin  can  commit attempted assault and/or attempted game of tag-TEAM RWBYQOM-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A FREAKY ASS VOID-that turns INTO-
Tumblr media
“Once upon a time, there stood a lonely tower”-
ALSO-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blake turns into Qrow because...genies? BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT-
“-that sheltered a lonely girl...named-
Tumblr media
“-Salem”.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH SHIT-Salem used to look NORMAL ONCE! BACKSTORY MOTHER FUCKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS!
AND THAT’S SEASON SIX EP TWO-following the classic RWBY formula of exposition episode after action episode and I gotta say we learned...A LOT! FOR ONE-Ozpin pulls a full Rose Quartz in revealing he’s not the ethical leader we all thought he was, AS WELL as showing he has a secret connection TO Salem, implying...A BILLION possible things  that I won’t put here because this is a recap blog and not a theory blog perse. HOO BOY-what a cliffhanger, NEXT WEEK-backstory time baby! SEE YOU NEXT WEEK on MICKSTERECAP!

RWBY VOLUME 6 CHAPTER 11: SPOILERS
1. Might as well start with BEES. This was the perfect way to do this. Relationships are built on trust and equality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. The day RWBY became Super Mario.
Tumblr media
3. Jaune is trying his best, Nora needs to stop spacing out mid fight.
Tumblr media
4. REALLY? Shoot it till it dies I guess...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. And of course they brought the GIANT BEE back for the BEES episode! God bless Weiss, snark queen and gay jesus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. And we thought the Blake/Yang/Adam showdown was going to be the big cliffhanger? We were wrong.
Tumblr media
7. Alright, not what I was expecting, but points for originality! Also, oof he was a slave? Grosssss, I don’t want to imagine what was done to him. And while he is an irredeemable waste of air I do like the stuff about him being all alone without Blake. She was his rock, just in a sick, toxic way.
Tumblr media
8. She looks so cute with out the coat!!!
Tumblr media
9. I screamed out loud at this and then got mad because I realized this is an exact repeat of 3 years ago aaagghhhhh
Tumblr media
10. Welp, can’t say they didn’t give us what we asked for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. WHAT A BADASS

Unnecessary Arguments - RWBY
*Spoilers*
Person #1: I’m only two episodes into volume eight, but it’s really impressive so far. My favorite was six, but this is amazing and might be the best
Person #2: You’re still watching that show? RWBY is terrible.
Person #1: I am so sick of people needlessly dumping on this show! They’ll make their own subreddit called r/rwbycritics. They’ll have hbomberguy make a 2 and a half hour video that basically translates to “animators good, writing bad.” And then, at the end of the day, you know what all those so-called critics do? They keep watching the show
Person #2: Because RWBY is so disappointing, it actually offers us some interesting insights into how not to do creative writing. Clearly it has potential, and lots of compelling ideas, yet somehow it still sucks
Person #1: Name one reason
Person #2: I’ll name three. The characters, the plot, and the world-building
Person #1: Seriously?
Person #2: Is it an edgy show about the apocalypse? A take on fables? A science fiction techno-thriller? Is it aimed at 12-year-old girls, grown men, anime lovers? Honestly, I’m really not sure what it’s trying to be anymore. It’s so uneven...volumes 1-3 were something like a story, 4 and 5 were garbage, then somehow we just flip the script in seven and make it some kind of techno cyberpunk battle anime
Person #1: You don’t really understand how good this show is. It’s okay to criticize a show
Person #2: Is it? You sound like you’re about to have a breakdown
Person #1: ...but no one who makes fun of it ever seems to really get what it is. I’m going to name you a few reasons why it’s brilliant. First of all, the premise doesn’t just boil down to a good vs. evil cliche - there’s a supposed good side and a supposed bad side, but the bad side can only succeed if it tears the good side apart. They represent that brilliantly. The evil minions called the Grimm are only truly strong when they detect negativity. Volume six hammers this home with evil minions that actually create apathy. This isn’t just your average battle series, it’s actually a deep examination into the human soul
Person #2: “A deep examination into the human soul.” Wow, are we talking about Shakespeare? No, you’re talking about a stupid web series
Person #1: Why do you just keep making fun of it without backing anything up?
Person #2: I’d love to, but there’s just so much to work with. Season one, they steal dust. Fine. Why? No reason, plot point dropped
Person #1: That’s so dumb, man. Dust is used for ammo and explosions. No one has the brain cells to figure that one out
Person #2: Volume five was garbage
Person #1: Character development!
Person #2: Speaking of characters, you kill your robot and then bring her back from the dead...thereby eliminating all the negative consequences and emotions associated with her death. No one ever really dies
Person #1: I can name three characters who are DEFINITELY dead
Person #2: And it’s just...you’re flying by the seat of your pants so much. Are we collecting relics? Are we gathering the maidens? It’s just quest after quest, each one slightly more pointless than the last, until we’re on volume 20 and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED
Person #1: Spoiler - in volume eight things ARE happening. If you really hate this show so much, why don’t you just fk off and ramble about how amazing BMHA is, instead?
Person #2: Because you guys just can’t take criticism. Also, what’s with all the random chess metaphors? They just kinda force it is
Person #1: NO THEY DON’T. That’s actually brilliant
Person #2: Oh boy, that word again....
Person #1: Volume three, notice the tower? Notice how it resembles the king in a chess game? Subtle clues. We asked for a chess anime, and they gave it to us...but it’s very subtle
Person #2: Yes, leaving a chess piece for your enemies to predict that you’re coming is soooo subtle
Person #1: Then they have to put it into the intro so idiots like you can figure it out. What is your argument, in the end? That the characters are TOO developed? That the plot is too complex for your little brain to figure out?
Person #2: No, my argument is that it’s garbage because of a writing idea we call scarcity. Who cares about random items that give you superpowers if there are ten other superpowers to worry about? Pyrrha was the best character because her powers had a limit - going to full power essentially meant she would have to die, in a sense, but now here comes along Ruby with her sharingan powers and super speed that actually isn’t speed. Jaune? His semblance is actually the best. Also, the robot got her maiden powers with virtually no consequences at all
Person #1: All the characters have obvious flaws, you just don’t see it. Ruby is confident, but not as mature as the others. Yang is too headstrong. Weiss still has a lot of baggage. The team has to balance itself, but how CAN THEY when the adult guardians who are supposed to serve as role models are actually falling apart in the same way? It seems like an endless cycle, the military forces and the school forces and the corporations constantly opposing one another while the true threat triumphs. And the Big Bad, the ultimate villain, actually CAN’T WIN without tearing at their own division. It’s like a greater metaphor. It’s genius
Person #2: Agree to disagree

The voice actors for the first 2 seasons were all Roster Teeth staff, so they were mostly amateurs, meaning they got chosen largely in part because they match the characters. But Yang in particular was based off Barbara, if I remember right (the wiki indicates this too, I just checked)
So, yeah, Yang making bad puns was inevitable

RWBY REVW:
** Disclaimer: When I do reviews, I make it my mission to point out both the good and the bad in whatever I'm reviewing. And I want to make it clear that me doing so is in no way meant to be taken as disrespect to anybody who worked on the show, especially the late Monty Oum. He was a visionary animator and it's a tragedy that he was taken from this world so soon. Anyway, with all that out of the way, let the regular review commence. **
Tumblr media
**  **Hello everybody, my name is JoyofCrimeArt, and I've always had a particular fondness for web series. There's just a certain charm to online content that I don't think can be repudiated with other more conventional mediums. Unlike other mediums, web series have the most creative freedom to do whatever the heck they want. They don't have to adhere to studio notes, focus groups, or censorship guidelines. It's just a group of people, or sometimes even just one person, deciding to put something out there into the world. Simply because they want to see said thing exist. And I think that the freedom that can comes from that can result in some very unique and creative piece of entertainment that may not have been approved if they had been pitched to a more "main stream" outlets. Not to mention the fact that web series, when compared to film and television, are definitely the underdog. And who doesn't love a good underdog story?
I've talked about several web series before, (like _Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared _and _Camp Camp) _and I'm defiantly going to talk about more in the future. However, today I wanna talk about a certain web series that managed to do something that very little other web original series have done. And that's break into main stream through sheer force of will. And that series is RWBY.
RWBY, created by the late Monty Oum and produced by Rooster Teeth, is an anime inspired online series that premiered in 2013. Now in the middle of it's sixth season (Oh, I'm sorry. Not seasons. Volumes? Cause we have to be all different all of a sudden.) it is still going stronger than ever. Now Rooster Teeth had always been one of the biggest companies out there for online content, and have had plenty of success with their very popular Red vs Blue machinima series, along with other projects. So RWBY doesn't exactly have the same underdog story as most other web series out there. It was made by a studio, and had a decent budget behind it from the start. However, the thing that I find noticeable about the series, and the thing that drew me into the series in the first place, was just how different it looked compared to so many other web series out there.
Animated web series as a genre is very much a dying breed. Sure, they were all the rage back in the early 2000's on sites like Newgrounds, and with shows like Homestar Runner and Eddsworld. But ever since the rise of Youtube and the algorithm shift they've become a bit of a dying art. (Outside of the "Animated Storytime Video" genre but that's kinda it's own separate thing.) Why spends weeks or even months on a three to five minute animation when you could just record a let's play or vlog in a fraction of the time, and get way more views in the process? And if you do decide to devote yourself to web animation than you gotta find a way to make it cost effect. This usually means short, comedic, easy to animate sketches. Often with some kind of parody element included to help get the viewers in. That way the series would (hopefully) become financially viable enough that more animations could be made. (Like How It Should of Ended as an example.) And this isn't necessarily a bad thing. There's nothing wrong with the shows that follow this formula. But I bring this up to show how much of a contrast RWBY is by comparison.
A fully original action anime inspired series, not based on any pre-established i.p, where the animation was the main focus. Rather than being animated in flash it was animated with motion captured CG. And despite all of that the series had new episodes coming out on regular basis and getting millions of views with every released. This series broke every rule in the book, and somehow ended up becoming insanely popular in the process. There wasn't very many web series like it. Now, I've brought up this series several times in other reviews. Sometimes I praised it, other times I made fun of it. Which is why I think it's time to finally put the jokes aside, and give my honest on RWBY.
Now there is a lot to go over with this series. Like, I said earlier, there are six sea-VOLUMES out as of the writing of this review. And given that this is a story based show with a changing status quo, it makes reviewing the show a bit tricky. And since I wanna have this review act somewhat as a introduction to the series for people who are on the fence about watching it or not, I'm going to try to keep spoilers somewhat light. But there will be some things I'll have to talk about, so if you want to go into the series COMPLETELY BLIND without knowing anything, you should probably drop off now. And if there's enough support in the comments (or if I just decide to at some point) I may come back to this series at a later date and do a more spoiler heavy review focused on events of the newer volumes. But with all that said, let's dive right in.
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x9zjk2MgVQ
The plot of RWBY is actually pretty simple. (GASP!-)
The series follows a young teenager names Ruby Rose. She's a protege when it comes to the art of combat and dreams of being a huntress. What a huntress you may ask? Well hunters and huntresses are warriors who's job is to protect humanity from the Grimm? What are Grimm you may ask? Well Grimm are monsters that are manifestations of humanities negative emotions. Try to keep up. Anyway, Ruby, along with everyone else in this world, has aura. aura is used to channel there semblances. _WHAT ARE SEMBLANCES you may ask?! _Well there basically superpowers powered by aura used by hunters to fight Grimm. But then there's also Dust, which is not the same thing as a semblance or aura and is DEFINITELY not magic. Magic is a whole separate can of worms that comes up later. Dust is energy (not aura though) that hunters put into there weapons to fight Grimm. RWBY semblance is super speed and her weapon is Crescent Rose, which is a scythe that's also a gun. Understand that? Good, cause that's just the first three minutes. Don't worry, it's all very well explained, and not convoluted in the slightest. Anyway-
Basically, the world functions like an JRPG. That's all you really need to know. There are random monsters everywhere, everyone has weapons and abilities, and they can equip the weapons with special elemental attributes attributes. After a chance encounter with some mysterious villains Ruby, despite only being fifteen, is selected to attend the worlds top school for hunters and training. Weapon Meister Academy, I mean Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, I mean UA Academy, I mean Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, I mean Beacon Academy! Yeah, that's the one!
Tumblr media
Ruby ends up getting sorted into her house-err, I mean-sorted into her team, Team RWBY. (convent, I know.) where she is joined by her half-sister Yang Xiao-Long, and her new teammates Weiss Schnee and Blake Belladonna. _Can these rag-tad team of huntresses in training learn to harness there abilities, and just maybe learn friendship along the way?! _Well if you've ever seen a piece of fiction before, you probably know the answer.
Now, I know I just got done taking a ton of jabs at the shows premise for having so many similarities to so many other popular piece of media. But all jokes aside, I don't think that any of that is actually a problem. As they say, there are no original ideas. So taking some inspiration from other works isn't really an issue as long as you have your own unique execution and spin to it, which RWBY thankfully does. RWBY has this unique style and flair to it that's all it's own. And it really does help it stand out as it's own thing. Also, since it borrows from so many different genres and franchise, the series ends up being this really bizarre melting pot of concepts that I haven't really seen done in tandem before. There's elements of action, drama, fantasy, magical girl, superpowers, coming of age stories, giant robots on at least one occasion...and THAT'S pretty original.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's like the people at Rooster Teeth decided they wanted to make an anime, but couldn't decide on what kind of anime they wanted to make. So they just said, "Screw it!" and decided to do them all, And while that might sound like a criticism, it really isn't. I love how over the top and crazy this show can get. It's kinda part of the charm.
Now let's talk about the characters. I've seen a lot of people (mostly hard core anime fans) argue that the characters in this series are cliche and uninspired. And in my opinion at least, there both kinda right and kinda wrong. It's true that a lot of the cast do fall into the somewhat standard "anime" tropes. Ruby is the typical wide eyed genki girl who's greatest skill is her kindness and optimism. Weiss is the stuck up snob tsundere from an upper class family who has to learn the power of friendship. Blake is the quite bookish girl with a dark and mysterious past who learns to open up. and Yang is the hot blooded action girl slash cool older sister archetype. Basically, there's a waifu for every flavor.
But like the series itself, the series makes up for some of these more cliche elements by adding more elements to the characters as the series goes on. These developments start fairly basic with things like "Oh, Ruby has to learn responsibility and leadership" or _"Oh, Weiss has to learn to stop being a fu*king BITCH for like the fifteenth time this week." _But as the series goes on we get much more complex and serious themes. From Ruby's history with her dead mom, Yang's struggles with PTSD, Weiss' broken family, or Blake' history of racial predigests. These are all themes that are tackled, and they are tackled well...for the most part. For a show that starts out pretty light it ends up in some dark places. But despite this it never deviates so much that it loses it's root, and becomes unrecognizable from where the series started. The series ages with the audience and the characters.
In addition to Team RWBY we also have Team JNRP (Juniper). They're kinda like the "B-Team" of the series. However, they become more important as the series goes on, and are basically main characters in their own right too. They're's Pyrrha, a prodigy huntress, gifted with natural talent. She's smart, kind, popular, and a skillful leader, and is literally selected as the objective best student by the school's headmaster in volume three. But she's not a Mary-Sue or anything...she has problems! Like how people are intimidated by her because she's so perfect and...she's not a Mary-Sue I swear! We also have Jaune, the leader of the team. He's a pathetic loser who has no skill, no semblance, and literally had to lie his way into the school. So of course he's the one who Pyrrha has the hots for. Because wish fulfillment. There's Ren, a stoic but sensitive ninja warrior who, judging from his hair and season four redesign, really seems to like the color pink despite being...y'know, a ninja. And Nora, a hyperactive genki girl who's job is to hyperactive and generally genki when Ruby's not around. Also, there all named after cross-dressers for literally no reason.
Like Team RWBY, while they all start kinda cliche they become more and more interesting as the series develops and we get more into there development. From Jaune's arc (Heh, get it?) of becoming a competent warrior to protect the people he cares for. To Ren and Nora connected tragic upbringing. To Pyrrah...being too perfect. Y'know, all good character arcs that really helps develop the cast.
Tumblr media
I don't know why I keep making fun of Pyrrha. I really do like her as a character, and her arc with Jaune is very captivating...She is a Mary-Sue though.
These arcs end up being just as interesting as the arcs the members of Team RWBY go through, an help make these "side characters" all the more interesting and human. Even if there not the stars of the show, I ended up finding this team just as interesting as our main protagonist, if not more so on certain occasions.
And sure, the characters may rely a bit on common tropes, but it's all about the execution of these tropes that determine the quality. I'm not going to act like their the most complex characters ever made or anything, and a lot of the darker themes I talked about before have been explored better in other series. But that doesn't mean the cast is bad, by any sense. I was still invested in there stories, and felt suspense for them when I was suppose to. There's a real comradely with the teammates, and they good chemistry with each other. They feel like real friends, and that's what matters the most.
Let's talk about the animation. I've seen a lot of people either really love or really hate the animation of the series, and I noticed that the difference seems to often be based on what standard it is being judged by. People who judge RWBY as a web series seem to be really impressed with the visuals and action scenes. While people who judge it as an "anime" seem to think that the show looks cheap and uninspired. And while I can understand the later viewpoint I do tend to find agreeing more with the viewpoint of the former. RWBY isn't an anime...
_-**YES IT IS! SHUT UP! **_
...And while Rooster Teeth is a big company, but it's still not as large as other major anime productions. They obviously were on a budget, especially early on. And they were taking on a project on a scale much larger than anything they had done before. It's an all CG motion capture web series, featuring entirely new and original assets that had to build from the ground up from scratch. So yeah, or course it's not going to look as good as other animes. But I don't think that should be held against it to much, given the circumstances. Plus honestly, it's still probably one of, it not the, best looking web series I've ever seen. It's definitely one of the most ambitious.
That being said though, I'm not going to be one hundred percent nice here. Looking back at early episodes, yeah, they look kinda rough. They still look good, especially by the standard of web series. But you can definitely see the budget show in some parts. It's clear they were biting off a bit more than they could chew in some respects. That being said though it is remarkable to see how much the shows animation has improved overtime. By the time we get to volume four, where a new animation engine was introduced, the show goes from "looking good by web animation standards." to "looking genuinely good by animation standards in general." I honestly really like the shows visuals a lot.
Tumblr media
And don't forget the action scenes! This is the part of the show that you can tell the most amount of effort was put into, and the part that the shows original creator, Monty Oum, was the most personally involved in. From the animation to the choreography, the action scenes are what gives the series it's sense of style. The action scenes are over the top, flashy, stylish, and such an array of pure insanity, and it's hard not to be blown away by them. And in a time where so many western cartoons are so comedy oriented, it's really a breath of fresh air to see an american action show with fight scenes as hype as the ones this show presents.
The voice acting is also pretty good. Starting out with a cast mostly reusing actions known from Rooster Teeth's other works. I admit that there were some growing pains early on with the cast, but they really did grow into there roles pretty fast. And as they series goes on they get a lot more "high profile" actors. From the likes of Vic Mignogna, Aaron Dismuke, Chris Sabat, Yuri Lowenthal, and Cherami Leigh among others. All the actors do really good jobs preforming there characters, for the most part. If I had to nitpick any performances though, and these are nitpicks mind you, would be the performances of Ruby and Pyrrah. Maybe it's just me, but I never felt like either characters sounded like the ages they were suppose to be. Regardless, these are nitpicks, There more of just an observation rather than a "fault" in the series.
So the show has good animation, good characters, amazing action scenes, and a pretty all star voice cast. Sounds like the show is pretty awesome show, right? Sure they've been some nitpicks and complaints here and there, but it's mostly been over all pretty minor stuff. Nothing that would impact the show that much.
So, Let's talk about the shows writing.
Tumblr media
So remember when I said that this show was convoluted? This is a serious problem. Things in this show are often not explained very well. For example, in most stories where a character has a special powers, there powers would be shown off or explained right when the characters are introduced. We'd learn how they work, and what there limits are. There are several characters in RWBY who's semblances I still don't fully understand. Like Ruby's super speed. Does Ruby turns into roses peddles when she uses her super speed or is that just an artistic license thing? And there are some characters who we don't even figure out what there semblances do until WAY late into the series. Ren for example, who's introduced in volume one, semblance isn't shown until volume four! And it's not like he only unlocks his powers in volume four or something, he's always had them. It's just never mentioned or came up before, and you'd think it would be. Things like "How are characters powers work." are things that should be established early on!
The show is also REALLY bad at set up. (Don't @ me!) They'll have these moments where a "big twist" is suppose to happen that's suppose to catch the audience off guard. And they do, but only the twist are set up in such minute ways, there's no way the audience can realistically be expected to see it coming. I know the idea is to help make these twist surprising, but they don't give the audience enough hints to piece things together. They'll be a minor, one off line in one episode, that'll be a major plot point volumes down the road, with nothing to imply that said line was significant. And since these twist aren't set up very well, a lot of these twist just end up feeling like, "um, okay. This is a thing now." I know it's probably all planned out from the beginning, but it's not properly set up. It sometimes feels like the people behind the show are just like "Hey, you know what would be cool?" and just throw things at the wall until they stick. This can work sometimes but other times it just feels random. The shows acts like "They got us." when really it's a problem with their own writing.
The show also has a major problem with focus. I listed Team RWBY and Team JNPR as the main characters. That's EIGHT different characters to divide focus between, which is already a lot when you only have twelve to fourteen episodes per volume to work with. And while those eight character are the closest thing the show has to "definitive main characters" there are so many other side characters who  that I didn't mention in order to keep this review spoiler free/not ten thousand words long. addition to Team RWBY and JNPR, there's also _(Slight Spoiler Warning) _Team SUNN, Ozpin's circle, Cinder's group, Salem's group, the White Fang, Raven's tribe, the various teachers at the school, the characters extended families, That useless rabbit girl that the fandom likes for some reason. etcetera. (Spoilers Over) There's just too many characters to keep track of! And while there's nothing wrong with having a large cast, (personally I tend to gravitate more to shows that do.) it can defiantly be hard to juggle all that screen time. Sure these side characters are often interesting, but they end up distracting focus and taking time away from the main cast, and side characters shouldn't do that.
Often, characters will only have a few moments per volume to really shine, due to just how much screen time they have to share. And sometimes it can make big character moments feel a bit undeserved, as there just isn't enough build up to make the moments feel as powerful as they should. And this is a problem that has gotten more and more prevalent overtime as the series has become more ensemble. But I'm hopeful that, given the series extending it's length from twelve episodes per volume to fourteen, as well as the episodes getting genuinely longer, this problem may be able to be fixed in the future. Maybe. Please...
So to sum up, is RWBY a perfect series? No. It is a very flawed show. VERY FLAWED. Particularly in the writing and the story department. However, I do not think that the show is as bad as a lot of the more vocal hatedom seems to think it is. Just because a series is flawed, doesn't mean you can't enjoy the elements that do work. Even when the flaws are extremely glaring. And that's how I feel about this show. Sure it has problems, but in my opinion the positives out-way the negatives. The action is still done very well, the characters are all pretty fun to be around. The world, while a bit overly complicated at times is interesting. And more importantly, the series never feels like it's being lazy. You can feel the passion that went into the series, and the show can be a lot of fun. There are just some parts where you might need to turn your brain off for a bit. There are plenty of worse series out there that don't try as hard and provide a lot less. But overall, the element I think I enjoy the most about RWBY is what the show represents.
What RWBY shows is that it is possible for a web animated series to hit the main stream. You can get RWBY T-shirts and merch easily, not just online, but in actual retail stores without much effort. The series can be watched on Netflix and Cruchyroll._ _There are not one, but TWO tie in manga's. There's a spin-off comedy series that's on it's third season. It's one of the four franchises represented in _Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle! _And most importantly it is partially responsible for transforming Rooster Teeth from a fairly successful internet company known for video game parodies, to a studio that is seen in the same light as the likes of more main stream television outlets! Never in my life had I seen a web animated series see this level of success. And sure, you could say that all that just means that the show is just good at selling out or whatever, but I like to have a more positive perspective. I think the show deserves to be respected for it's accomplished.
And to me, that's inspiring. It's like the weeb equivalent to the American dream! And that's why I have a RWBY poster hung over my work desk. As a reminder that there is no limitations to how far an online content can go. With just some hard work, determination, a studio of about three hundred employees, a stellar marketing team, a close connection to the anime dubbing industry, and a ton of money, you too can make your dreams a reality. And that's motivational...I think...maybe. And if they can make it, maybe I can make my own weeaboo dreams a reality...
_  **SPIRIT WARRIORS COMING OUT TWO THOUSAND AND NEVER!~
**_  So that's my review of RWBY. What do you think of the series, and would you like me to do another review of the series in the future? Maybe on volume six or something, kinda like what I do with my Dragon Ball Super reviews? Tell me all this in the comments down bellow. I'd love to start a conversation, even if you disagree with my points I made here. Please fav, follow, and comment if you liked the review and have a great day.

This'll include spoilers for the second episode as well.
It's good! I had very much taken a wait-and-see approach to this coming up. While I had seen good things with Mechs in them, I'm not someone who goes, "ohh, mechs, that's awesome!" (for me that's trains instead). But now I believe the hype. This is really good. At least as good as RWBY volume six, which is easily peak RWBY (oh yeah, gotta write about that season finale as well, don't I? Short version: That was nice). With a lot of RT content, I've always felt the need to qualify my praise (but not my love): It's really good… considering that it's all in Halo, or made with a team of like eight people, or something. This here, though, is 100% top-notch quality anime, no qualifications needed.
Content-wise, these two episodes, which really form one giant pilot it seems, seem to be all about convincing us that the show is cool. And that they manage well: Awesome visuals, extended fight sequences that never feel like they drag on, great music, great voice acting, I love it.
What gets pushed to the side for that is context: Who is the Union and why are they attacking? I certainly got some vibes here, e.g. the scene where the man shows his Union badge reminds me of movies portraying the time Nazi Germany annexed Austria, where also many people were scared and a few revealed that they had been Nazi supporters all along. So that seems similar. But there's nothing specific.
Likewise, the characters are all really more attitude than full persons, and in grand old RWBY tradition, the show seems to expect you to have seen the character introduction trailers. Great character design, great animation and absolutely amazing voice acting all make me want to know more about them. The decision to hire these big names was definitely the right one as every single one of them is killing it. But I still can't say that I actually know much about them, where they came from, what drives them and so on.
Personally, I don't see this as a problem, just as an interesting thing to point out. The show is clearly only in its early stages of exploring its world. Besides, there's a grand tradition especially in mech anime to start in medias res, and give us the context only piecewise - and I know some that probably better shouldn't have (looking at you, Darling in the Franxx). The show does raise a lot of questions and expectations.
Right now, the show has convinced me that it's cool, gorgeous, and that it has characters with great chemistry and attitude. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes next.

RWBY Volume 6 New York Comic Con news
So this isn’t a proper panel summary thanks to the first half hour being just dead-air for the audience and a lot of the RWBY news being concentrated into one chunk near the middle and a Q&A. So if you want the details on everything related to Gen;Lock, there’s other sources like @genlock-analysis that have you covered. I’m a RWBY guy first and foremost. The stream for the panel can be found here. RWBY and Genlock start at 2:29:00.
Also while I’m rambling, my spoiler tags for RWBY Volume 6 will be universallly RWBY Volume 6 Spoilers,” and “RWBY Volume 6 Chapter X Spoilers,” both of which will be removed after the episode is made live the week later. Speaking of, this has a Read More because spoilers for the first episode of Volume 6 are within.
I will say upfront the first half hour of this panel is insane in how poorly managed it feels, particularly the part where a Camp Camp episode got shown for... whatever reason. For the record, they cut six times overall during the panel.
Panel hosted by Gray, Miles, Kerry, Chad Jones from ScrewAttack and the RWBY Girls.
News that was already known: Shonen Jump manga (new manga art here), Qrow statue, After The Fall.
Ruby’s character will be undergoing a shift- not a proper edgelord shift but she’ll be a bit more hardened.
Weiss got a new update to her costume- it was a bit too soon for a full costume shift, but Weiss has gotten herself a red scarf and blue stockings (the scarf is a callback to the V4 World of Remnant on the SDC, where Weiss’s grandfather Nicholas was depicted with such a scarf. Also White Rose fans were really happy).
The panel had a brief teaser for the first episode of Volume 6. We open with a train battle, RWBY fighting off some aerial Grimm. It cuts to the White Fang hideout, where Adam has made his return. He wants his throne back but the rest of White Fang don’t accept him. They still remember how he ran away from the last battle. Adam kills them and takes the throne (cue an Aggressive Negotiations Prequel Meme). We also learn he’s still mad at Blake for betraying him, and is holding a grudge. The next scene showed RWBY and Co. in a train station, preparing to leave for Argus. Qrow sends a letter to Atlas to explain what happened in the Battle of Haven. Blake and Ilia say their goodbyes. Ilia’s going back to Haven to help Blake’s family rebuild. The two share a hug, then part ways.Sun shows up and says that he is going back to his home. He wants to team up with his old crew, including Neptune, who shows up to hit on Ilia. Blake jokes that he is barking up the wrong tree. After everything that happened in Volume 5, Sun decides he needs to become a better team leader. Blake decides she needs to be with her team. Blake gives Sun a kiss on the cheek and rejoins Team RWBY.
Rooster Teeth also will be working with DC Comics for some kind of RT show comic adaptation- various sources are reporting it as both GenLock and RWBY are getting comics
Sphinx Grimm confirmed, it’s the Grimm on the V6 poster.
First question is just a thanks.
Can we get a What’s Up You Fucking Cunts from Barb? She obliged.
Miles, what would you like the fans to ask you? Any question that has nothing to do with anything important. “What’s your favorite dinosaur?”
Gray, what was it like to pick VAs for GenLock? Scary.
Chad. Who would win between Pyrrha and Carolina? Arryn points out that Pyrrha could use her Semblance on Carolina’s armor and Chad admits that would tip the scales.
Gray, what are Gen;Lock’s inspirations? Star Wars, Star Trek, Galactica, some Japanese shows like Giant Robo, Ultraman and Starblazer. Mecha-wise, early and modern Gundam, Full Metal Zero. A lot of cyberpunk like William Gibson’s novels.
Chad takes the piss out of Gray for rambling about inspirations during a lightning round.
Miles, What keeps you wanting to write? "I love telling stories and at the end of the day I've come to realize it doesn't matter where you tell those stories but if you're given an opportunity to do it then you should take that chance cuz not everyone gets a chance.”
Ever miss your private lives? Most of the gang still find private time. To an extent yes, but the pros outweigh the cons.
What would your semblance be? Lindsay- summoning cats. Arryn never knows. Kara- something with money. Barb- Yang’s semblance. Kerry- the ability to have two different paths of thought at the same time without having anxiety. Miles- the power to take light energy and use them for flashbang attacks. Chad- some kind of sonic amplification. Gray- the power to put all the merch he bought in his luggage.
Would Prinny be in Death Battle? Chad doesn’t know who Prinny is.
What’s the central theme of this volume? Nothing easy to talk about pre-release. “It’s part of a big lesson that needs to be learned by some people this season and hopefully you’ll learn it by the end too.”
No ship questions. A pleasant surprise. Panel was quite dry, too much cutting and skipping and the first half hour was a complete chore. I’m also very disappointed to hear that Ilia’s not going, since her dynamic with Weiss could have been a highlight of the season in Atlas.
So yeah. 4/10 panel, too many cuts.
