imagery is hugely important in stories. a ‘show don’t tell’ method of storytelling leaves a lot to be interpreted by the reader, since oftentimes it’s used for characters that are ambiguous in morals or actions

in the season 4 trailer for BSD, a lot is shown in such a short amount of time that I had to watch the trailer at least 3 times before i felt like i got everything that was included. and on my third watch, i found a single frame that i really wanted to talk about

🔺spoilers for the manga, as i go into that to analyze the scene that the trailer shows🔻

all lower case is intentional. there’s no tldr, its a relatively short post about imagery in the screenshot i took. that’s all

god, where do i begin? let’s explain exactly what the imagery includes, first

angelic imagery

angelic imagery in stories is often used to portray innocence, or purity. here, i think there’s conflicting messages with how exactly the imagery is presented, which is kind of obvious

why is Ranpo there? this image doesn’t appear in the manga in this scene, only in the s4 trailer (so far)

Ranpo is positioned in such a way that it seems like the wings are coming out of his back like the winged human angels that people usually think of when they think of angels. pure white feathers, light and purity surrounding them. here, we have the wings with none of the light. the wings and crosses are painted it blood on the wall, which could be considered a sign of sin. when Ranpo is considered in this context, wouldn’t that kind of make sense?

the ADA is currently being accused of crimes, even tho they didn’t commit any. Ranpo specifically is usually seen as pure or innocent in the ADA, being one of the few members of whom we know their past and they never did anything explicitly evil or malicious to deserve the evil connotations that come with this angelic imagery. Ranpo is pure, he’s a little bean, he just wants to eat his snacks and read Poe’s books

the story had different ideas tho. if we’re being specific, Ranpo is seen ‘murdering Taneda’ as a part of the DOA’s elaborate plans, which is an act of sin. it’s murder, duh. the fact that the wings and crosses are bloody is representing Ranpo’s innocent and pure image being tainted by his act of sin

all of the eyes included are not drawn in the same red color, but it’s referencing one way that angels actually appear in the bible: a weird eyeball thing with wings, basically. they’re also all looking at Ranpo, as if in judgement. since the eyes aren’t drawn in the blood, i think the representation here is all of the people watching the broadcast that’s happening when they get framed for the crimes. innocent citizens who may or may not have been looking at the ADA as a symbol of safety against crime, specifically Ranpo since he seems to be more well known among people in the police. all of those eyes are on him, judging him for the sin of murder. not to mention it’s Taneda’s murder, a hugely important character to the public eye as the director of the Special Divisions

i think that’s all. it’s a relatively short analysis, but i couldn’t just sit on this and not talk about it lol. i hope you guys enjoyed :D

The real stuff about bsd

1)Bungou Stray Dogs: Why is it always the ships??? Soukoku, Shin soukoku, Ranpoe etc? Always it is a ship! Always it is a gay ship, which overpowers the anime. The anime is called bungo stray dogs, not romance or anything. Why so focused on the ships? Why so many gay this character gay that character ? Why hypothetical ships like kouyosano and higugin? Why is it always ships??? Bsd has such a great plot, interesting storyline, with a lot of creative bittersweet elements. The plot is beautiful and unpredictable, and yet people are like, "Damn, where's Dazai X Chuuya. Lol Atsushi so gay, what a pussy" Next- Nakajima  Atsushi, this guy is seriously such a great character. He sees through pain, is understanding, strong and in the animanga as a whole, has shown immense development in his trauma, and lack of self confidence and has tried to move forward, forgetting the past. Such a great character. But of course, in the end accordind to the fandom, its like, "Lol Atsushi such a kitty, what a bottom lmao, he needs Akutagawa to protect his lil cat" What a load of shit. Then Akutagawa, one of the most interesting side characters, which is rather unique, considering he always has a the desire to prove himself to Dazai in an unhealthy way, which shows how human he is with flaws, but got development after Kyouka left the mafia. But in the fandom, "Akutagawa!! Protect your kitten. Lmao he totally loves Atsushi. Top energy, gay lovehaha." Like seriously what the fuck? Ships, ships and more ships. Sigh, I hope this changes after s4 drops, but I dont have any hopes. The Author needn't put so much efforts to make the story likable to audience, he can just make some hypothetical gay ships canon and poof! There! A best seller manga! Nakahara Chuuya- Don't even get me started on this guy. He is great. A god sealed inside, a struggle to accept himself, trying to be true to himself, that is a simple genius character, as he is not just weirdly hot tempered for no reason. But in the end, "Look at my shortie tsundere hiding his feeling for Dazai, how cuteee, bottom ahahah." This is abseloutly ridiculous and weird! Treat him like an independent character not a bottom in fucking to Dazai lmao. Seriously. Dazai Osamu- He.is.overrated.period. But he isnt bad. But he isnt a rapist to Chuuya lmao. Neither he is interested. He is a complex character, with a rather interesting mindset. Seriously. Come on. Ranpo Edogawa- "Wait he was hunting dogs and has an interesting backstory and a great peronality? Nah fuck it, lets just ship him with Poe for no fking reason!" Poe- "He has a friendship sort rivalry with Ranpo which makes him interesting? Nah, he's just a weak bottom." The Guild cast "Who?" Soukoku, Shin Soukoku, Fukumori- This are, well hierarchial order of partnership, as some would say. Now these are not just gay ships, there is so much interesting elements to them. (go read the fucking manga or watch the anime if you wanna know what the elements are.) Diamond polishing another, the hatred bit still soft side of caring, this is interesting, highly. Fukuzawa and Mori's past, Dazai and Chuuya's secret care for each other. Atsushi and Akutagawa's difference of opinion, these factors make a relationship likable. But just stop romanticizing them so fucking much. Yes they are good team. End! Why go so deep just for the sake of a gay romantic relationship? Jeez fuck it. Female Cast- (Note: this will not include Yuan and Naomi) Every single female is so great, with such interesting backstories, espcially Koyo. BUT NO! IT'S JUST GAY SHIPS!!!!!!! Always! Yosano, Kyouka, Mizuki, Gin such interesting personalities, such great sophisticated backstories, but fuck no. SHIPSHIPSHIP. Female cast has played such well role, (I like that about the bsd female cast, they aren't sexual objects, they have there own perosnalites and own backstories to support the story) in the bsd arcs as a whole. Oh but Fuck no. SHIP! Damnit. Get real people, Bsd ain't all about gay ships, a lot goes into it. (btw, i ain't homophobic, if i gave that view, i like lgbt+ ships when they are centralised, also i feel like the biggest YmiKuri and Unemoya x Mafuyu stan sometimes, so that is cool.) Please understand guys. Bsd is much larger than weird ships. It used to be a joke, it aint fucking no more feels like one.

the first character i ever fell in love with: it WAS old ben kenobi. I can’t help it; I see a powerful mentor hero-of-their-own-story character with a special sword and it’s over for me. it’s the obi wan/brom/aragorn/etc stan in me a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: mmmm there are a bunch of EU characters whose arcs were..... less than thrilling. the solo twins come to mind (fuckin rip jacen solo). I also love ahsoka a whole lot but I think it would be okay if they stopped bringing her back for every single new title in the franchise a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: I dislike what they did with han/leia in the sequel trilogy but I’m still a big han/leia fan so idk if that counts. tbh star wars shipping is like comic shipping you just gotta shrug and let shit happen my ultimate favorite character™: obi wan kenobi prettiest character: s/o to my baby crush on padme also FINN also poe my most hated character: I wish I could say it was kyle ron but they really just ruined any chance he had to be like, a well-realized character and he doesn’t deserve my hatred. it’s jorus c'baoth. also joruus c’baoth if he counts the whole clone thing was A Lot my OTP: han/leia, jedistormpilot. luke/mara jade from the books I loved mara jade (rip mara jade). also I was a big obidala shipper as a kid (like I said baby’s first second fandom) my NOTP: r*ylo :/ favorite episode: A NEW HOPE (fave to least fave: 4, RO, 5, 7, 6, 3, 8, 2, 9, 1) saddest death: leia cause it was so STUPID. see you space mom. also kanan actually :(((((((( reader I cried favorite season: like, season 3 of rebels maybe? one of the later clone wars season? I can’t keep any of the clone war eps straight. I’m gonna swap season for trilogies so the Original Trilogy but I want to include rogue one in that selection least favorite season: the sequels :) also rebels s4 what the fuck :( character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: again I will go with kyle ron even tho this feels like a cop out my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: kallus! he got better tho. also like. novel!thrawn but in a fun way my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: finn :) my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: I have read good luke/leia/han fanfiction and also a whole lot of other weird squicky fic in my youth. guys ff.net in the late 2000s was a terrifying place to be my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: anidala, luke/han, padme/sabe, a LOT of minor fic ships. finn/rose.

A quick list of animes I watched and don’t want to forget:

Mushishi - pure, haunting beauty, 10/10 recommend especially when you want some clarity and calmness in your life. You’ll cry tho

K - the amount of tears I shed TwT I literally miss the characters. Weird af world and story, but somehow I got attached. There should be K: seven stories somewhere but I can’t find it... Also: this whole we’re a bunch of problematic people who become a family is a trope I’ll never get tired of

Tokyo Ghoul - S1 and S2 feel like one huge story and it’s just the beginning so buckle up... There are 2 OVAs (Jack and Pinto) that help with understanding Re: (S3) and then there is S4 which is apparently only the most important parts of the manga... I understand why so many people think that s4 is ridiculous, but the first 3 seasons are great. The manga is a must for the anime tho, bc the last season is a joke, so if you can, read the manga first. With that said, the censorship is terrible so if you can, watch it without the weird black and white patches that take up half the screen, because the animation, the fights, the colours are all extremely vibrant and alive, just like the characters. What being human means, why the police feel like they are doing god’s work when they kill innocents along with the psychos, what a family is, can we be selfish for others, and many more questions are discussed here, all while somebody gets gutted. S2 was much more like a filler than a normal season, but still, I cried, and the whole anime is awesome so watch it if you can. (If you get upset when humans are able to endure more than supernatural beings then it’s not your show, bc even though humans are supposed to be, you know, humans, they are still able to kill tens of ghouls with a fucking hole inside of them.)

Attack on Titan - got tired of waiting after s2... No mystery is worth more than a year of waiting lol

Black butler - I need to get around and watch the book of atlantis. Great story, Sebastian is everything and more, and the aesthetic is something I’ll never forget. The music fits perfectly, and the foods make me drool. It has the “big picture”, as well as small journeys where you can get to know your favourite characters which I appreciate. S2 was not something I enjoyed, but the book of circus was worth it as well as most ova’s.

Darker than black - THEY MUST CONTINUE IT BRING HEI BACK PLEASE PLEASE I CAN’T I JUST CAN’T - also s2′s opening makes me cry. Dolls and Contractors work together as a team, then alone, then again as a team... it was a wild ride. Awesome character development, great plot and world building. Sadly they cut their story and future at s2 for some reason... If I ever watch it again I watch Gaiden before Gemini tho - a lot less confusion and disappointment this way.

Bungou Stray Dogs - loving it with my whole heart can’t wait to watch it again because there is literally NO character I don’t love. It has pretty boys, crime, mystery, magical abilities and comedy alongside the surprisingly deep issues. The art style is otherworldly, everything is so PRETTY and CAPTURING ugh *-*. It also made me read lots of books again (especially Japanese literature which was new for me) ^^ (Who doesn’t ship Dazai and Chuuya... And Poe is a baby too)

Noragami - cute, very cute, I love it when the main character is powerful af yet has a silly, loving side. Also: you can learn a bit about gods and religion

Assassination Classroom - tears. all of them. tears. It’s not what I expected but still, the little assassins and the teacher’s relationship was perfect.

Another - i watched it for the dolls and the umbrella meme. Liked it? yes. Do I remember anything else tho? Not really

Parasyte - one of the first animes I’ve ever watched. Loved it. ^^ Migi was great, all the issues it brings up were thought provoking, and it has gore.

Hellsing - idk it had too many monologues and ideologies, didn’t finish it

Psycho-Pass - In short: cyberpunk future, systematic oppression, immigrants, killing with permission and other moral or societal issues, plus charismatic characters and gore. The watching order: S1, S2, Sinners of the system, S3, First inspector. Wonderful buildup, dynamic storytelling, great mystery elements, and of course the found family/teamwork will always be a favourite of mine. The writing is extra detailed, every character is 3D, their responses, beliefs and cultures are tied together perfectly, the chemistry between characters is relatable and although everybody seems to live by one goal only, it’s not as dull as one would think. It also has some great book recommendations, literature and philosophers play a big role, which is always a bonus. 10/10. I really hope we will get extra contents and S4 in the future.

Steins Gate - I can’t bring myself to watch the last 2 episodes of S1 lol. It starts slowly but it’s much better paced than I remembered. The anime heavily relies on the characters which are sadly very 2D: the haughty but loving, the cute but tragic, the clever weeb, the loving tsundere... and for some fucking reason every single girl loves the mad scientist who... doesn’t really show love or sometimes not even respect towards the others until the last half of the show, so I don’t particularly care about their fate, but I watch it bc I don’t want to leave it unfinished. Because people are so into it I thought maybe the story will be... flabbergasting, shocking or just a masterwork, but the whole time travelling thingy, all the rules, all the paralel worlds work very conveniently. There were some great twists that I loved, some that I saw coming and some that I didn’t, but the story itself isn’t the best and even the plottwists won’t help that.

Full metal alchemist - i watched many, many episodes. I liked it. But it lost me. Anyways, I looked up the story and it sounds interesting, lots of plot twists, great conspiracy theories etc. The main character was a bit... annoying. My main problem is that they were children cuz I can only get immersed in the adult characters’ stories...

Durarara!! - s1 was great I love gang and mystery stuff, BUT I stopped watching it bc I was only immersed in the adult characters’ stories...

The Ancient Magus' Bride - it’s a gory fairy tale, with two toxic but loveable characters who learn a lot, evolve a lot and become real companions. There is lots of touching, head pats and affection. <3 Seasond 2 is very much needed, I want to see more episodic journey elements like the cat kingdom episodes were, and perhaps cry just a little less. Pro tip: when you watched the first 12 eps you should watch the 3 episode ova and then the next 12 eps ;) Oh, and expect tears mostly from happiness

Devilman Crybaby - I was the crybaby. The ending is beautiful, the art style was great, it literally pulsed through my eyes sometimes. Awesome characters, weird storyline, sad ending.

Death Parade - another anime that made me cry :) Beautiful art style, immersive story, interesting take on the afterlife, moral issues. It had everything I needed,

Juni Taisen - It wasn’t the craziest or most cunning anime of all times, but I cared about the characters and I really wanted to know how it ends, so it was good i guess

Kekkai Sensen - i watched s1 and I didn’t care anymore...

BEASTARS - it was one hell of a ride. Interesting world, great conflict, highschoolers and gore... also I think there was a sudden rise in the numbers of furries while it aired. It’s art style however was too cgi-y, too smooth for me :/

Re: Zero - the main character is a little bitch i hated him but i stayed for the plot. I don’t really like love interests when one party is only loved because they look perfect... i really wish we got more seasons and explanations  s2 is on the horizon, but I doubt I’ll ever watch it

I’ll update it when I watch something else or I remember something I’ve watched.

Also in conclusion, what do i need in an anime? 1) adults 2) superpowers 3) found family 4) a brooding, powerful af main character 5) action and mystery (plus gore) 6) chemistry between characters 7) side characters that matter 8) tissues

Cheating by saying the Steven Universe movie because it hit my amnesia/reset id and honestly I’d put it here for Pearl’s single verse in that first song alone, I’m easy.

After this I am choosing between just okay movies, and the first three Twilight movies I watched while high off my ass. Hmm

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. An editing mess, but god, I love Rey so much you guys, how feral she gets, and I love Finn and Poe hanging out, and I love cool force moments that blow my mind the same way seeing a lightsaber as a kid blew my mind

Top 5 TV Shows In 2019

Gentleman Jack! What an amazing depiction of Anne Lister, a little bit more romantic than reality but leaving her very real flaws on screen. (I have mild thoughts on this and Hamilton the musical, but that’d TL;DR) I didn’t expect to fall in love with a period piece, how unexpectedly tropey. 

ODAAT S3. It shows up at the beginning of every year to leave me crying in a plane/my dorm room/my apartment, in the best way possible. Looking forward to an episodic schedule!

She-Ra S3 and S4. I have no urge to read fic for this fandom, because this show always makes interesting choices with its characters and I’m so satisfied with those

Critical Role. I have run out of actual tv shows, I love Beau and I love this found family food.

The Wrong Stars by Tim Pratt. A punchy space opera with f/f between the leads, and  there were aliens I thought were really cool

This Is What Inequality Looks Like by Teo You Yann. A sobering, vivid ethnography of inequality and poverty in Singapore. Author’s a great essayist imo.

Red, White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston. Cute YA m/m, tropey and sweet. (I recently realized I wouldn’t have liked this book nearly as much if it was f/f, which was a very odd realization to have.)

Gentleman Jack - Angela Steidele. Not the tie-in biography for the show, but a translation of a different one. Unflinching in rendering Lister as she was, but not untouched by her either.

Severance - Ling Ma. The prose was really good, and I liked the mish-mash of genres and it all coming back to nostalgia in the end.

1. Malcolm Bright from Prodigal Son, the show already had 3 episodes out and one day decided to check it out, couldn't have made a better decision! Malcolm is my favourite whumpee atm for many reasons, (he gets whumped every episode being the main lol) Tom Payne plays him so well and we get so much emotional, psychological and physical whump and...yeah.

2. Titan's. You may be thinking, but that's a show and not a character but no I whump basically every single character and gah is it a blast. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd (I have a fic for him started), Gar Logan, and Kory Anders are all so whumpable and the family/team dynamic has me

3. Hmmm I gotta go with Poe Dameron right now, after seeing tros I have been thrown right back into my love for the x-wing pilot (if anyone has any whump fics for him...please send them over 🙏🙏🙏)

Honerable mention: Quentin Coldwater. Q was my man, I loved him so much and he struggled with a lot of the same things I did so reading whump fics with him was extremely theraputic but then SPOILER FOR MAGAICIANS S4 they killed him off in the worst way possible and I haven't been able to even think about Magicians recently...I'm really hoping they fix it because I really liked that show

The 100 rewatch: 4x02 Heavy Lies the Crown

The season 4 premiere wasn’t that great, but this is much better and much more typical of the overall quality of season 4.

The Polis storyline is, for a change, actually quite good. I’ve always thought that season 4 did a much better job with most Grounder characters than season 3 or even season 2. And the storyline in and in relation to Arkadia is great, with Bellamy, Clarke and Raven having to do make difficult choices. In particular, Bellamy finds himself in the position to make a really tough choice, and the choice he makes really encapsulates his leadership style and worldview.

The title is another literary reference – after Dante and Poe, now it’s Shakespeare – although it is a misquote of the line “Heavy lies the head that wears the crown” from Shakespeare’s Henry IV. They supposedly chose to name it that way because they thought it sounded better – or maybe they just thought that would make it more obvious to the viewers that the theme of the episode was the difficulty of being a leader.

The flashback that opens the episode would have fit better as the opener of 4x01, which was much more about the fallout of the City of Light and people who died because of ALIE. (No surprise, since it was originally meant to be in 4x01.) It’s the introduction of another interesting new Grounder character, Ilian, whose family suffered a really tragic fate – ALIE made Ilian kill them or torture them in order to force his mother to take the chip. Seeing it all happen helps build sympathy for Ilian and makes it easier to understand his later actions. It’s also one of the few times we see Grounder farmers. I like the fact that the show isn’t focusing just on Grounder warriors  anymore and that we get to see more and more of Grounders of different professions and worldviews.

In Polis, the leader who has to make decisions is Roan, who is preparing to meet the challenge of an ambassador of one of the other clans, Rafel, who is trying to use the fact that Roan is still recuperating from his injury and isn’t full strength, Roan is a good character to watch because he’s smart and capable, and morally grey – he isn’t one of the bad guys, but he can be ruthless and sneaky if he has to. The fact that he’s a very different leader from his mother certainly helps. This is emphasized when Echo, who is sparring with him, goes on about how awesome Queen Nia was, in her mind, for being so ruthless and murderous and not giving a damn about anyone other than Azgeda; After being questioned why he decided to accept the Sky people as the 13th clan, Roan finally tells Echo the truth about Praimfaya and that they need Sky people to survive it.

Talking about Roan’s chances in single combat, Octavia says Lexa kicked his ass when he wasn’t wounded, but she doesn’t know that the Nightblood basically gives you superpowers, which is only revealed later during S4

Kane is again the Chancellor – but we don’t learn if another election was held or not. He is mostly acting as a diplomat, however – he’s more of an ambassador, while Clarke pretty much acts like acting Chancellor in Arkadia.

Kane tries to reason with Rafel, and makes the good point that, if they are going to blame Sky people for the City of Light, they should also credit them for destroying it. But don’t expect Rafel to listen to reason. So Octavia eventually solves Roan’s and everyone’s problem by murdering Rafel, which is later portrayed as a heart attack. I should be generally against assassinations and Octavia using violence and murder to solve problems, but, you know what, I liked this solution.

Major development forward for the Kabby relationship: After the kiss last season, there’s a rather steamy, by CW-standards, sex scene and, while there is no “I love you” in so many words, the relationship between Abby and Kane is strongly affirmed. Initially, after their sex scene, we see that Abby used to wear her wedding ring on a necklace. She’s unsure or uncomfortable with putting it on again, as Kane sees it, but Kane tells her Jake is a part of her, But later Kane realizes that she is not wearing it – and they kiss, as Abby has just shown him that she has really moved on from Jake and committed to him.

Abby decides to go back to Arkadia to help Clarke and the rest find a solution for Praimfaya

In Arkadia, Clarke, Raven and Bellamy arguing over what to do; Raven is concerned thatthere are not enough volunteers to repair the ship. She also has insecurities and feel she shouldn’t be main engineer - Sinclair should be, but he is dead, Clarke replies that she’s in a similar position since she’s no Chancellor. However, they’re all basically back to their own season 1 roles, when they were the only ones on the ground and leaders of their people.

One of the most pleasant surprises about season 4 is that it found a purpose for Jaha and started using his character in a much better way, and even managed to make me finally interested and enjoying his character, even though he hasn’t actually changed his personality. This is probably because 1) he is not in position of power now, 2) he wants to and manages to be useful – as an engineer, which is his original profession, and 3) most importantly, he has a number of interesting interactions with the main characters that he didn’t get to interact much before, like Clarke, Bellamy and Raven. In the season when they are faced with particularly difficult leadership choices, which are similar to the situation on the Ark – having to make choices who will live and who will die because it’s impossible to save everyone; having lie to people in order not to cause panic – Jaha is both there to offer his perspective and advice (which may be good or bad), and as a cautionary tale: he is what they all used to hate and what they really don’t want to become, but now they are afraid they may be becoming like him.

The crux of the episode is Bellamy’s mission (with Monty, Harper, Bryan and Miller) to go into the Azgeda territory, to the remains of the Farm Station that Azgeda occupied, and retrieve a hydro generator that would help produce water for the people in Arkadia during the five years of radiation. They start off hoping to get it peacefully, by showing Roan’s seal. They get a hostile reception instead, but eventually the head Azgeda guy agrees to it. However, things change when they learn that the people working at the station are slaves…

…Let’s take a moment to emphasize the fact (for the benefit of all of those who like to portray Sky people/Arkers as the Bad Guys and Grounders as Good Guys, that, in addition to everything else we know Azgeda did under Queen Nia’s rule, like killing Arkers indiscriminately, including children, from the moment they landed, and blowing up a bunch of Arker civilians as a part of a political power play that wasn’t even about them, they also practice slavery, enslaving both Arkers and other Grounders.

…This is a big moment where the group has to decide whether to prioritize getting the hydro generator, or blowing it up to free the slaves. Bryan argues in favor of the latter, especially since he recognized one of the slaves as a friend of his, called Riley. (Now, I know that the fandom likes to make fun of Riley because of the way that this character was made important in spite of never being heard about before, but this is more of a problem in 4x05. I don’t see any problem here – we never saw any of the Farm Station before season 3, either, and we knew very few of the people on the Ark in season 1, and many we knew are dead. And the actor does a good job playing someone who has been traumatized and beaten down by slavery and abuse.) The group split votes – Bryan and Harper for freeing the slaves (Harper compares their fate to her experience of being put in a cage in Mount Weather), Monty and Miller for getting the hydro generator, so Bellamy makes the decision and chooses to free the slaves.

This decision is something I need to talk about a bit more. I love the way season 4 in particular has so many situations where there is no obvious right or wrong choice - neither choice is great and wrong in some way while good in another way, and you can make good arguments for either alternative. This is one such case. Personally, while I understand and respect the position that the hydro generator should have been the priority and slaves ignored, I was happy with Bellamy's decision, was rooting for him to make that choice, and it's what I would probably do. Regardless of how things turn out in the end, I think this is the better principle to live by: "We save who we can save today". (Which also reminds me of the decision Bellamy made in 2x04 – save the person who is in the most immediate danger and need.) There are many leaders in this show, maybe too many, who advocate the Big Picture thinking, which is a legitimate position if moderate, but taken too far, it can lead to (in the name of some hypothetical better future) present oppression, killing the people you're supposed to protect, executions for all sorts of silly reasons as on the Ark, letting innocent people die from enemy bombs, or cold blooded murder of an innocent person for "pragmatic" reasons - as Jaha did in season 2, using the motto "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". I don't trust anyone who uses that motto to justify killing other people rather than sacrificing themselves (which was how that character we all know and love used it in that well known movie that the quote comes from). And I don't fully trust anyone who does things in the name of an abstract notion of "people" or "my people" while not caring enough about individuals that make up that abstract collective

I liked Bellamy’s decision before I knew how things would turn out, and would like it regardless of the eventual consequences. But as it turns, out, if they had saved the hydro generator, it would have been for nothing, since Ilian will blow up Arkadia in a few episodes. This way, those people who had been slaves a couple of months of nice life back with their families.

Another minor in-character moment: when they are about to take the Grounder ex-slaves to their villages, Bellamy is again taking care of a little girl in the group.

Raven is angry over Bellamy’s decision, and Clarke at first seems to disagree, but eventually accepts it, and Bellamy he sticks to it and takes full responsibility. Clarke finally decides to tell people a half-truth: she tells them about Praimfaya, but claims they will be able to save everyone, even though, without the hydro generator, they can only save 100 people there. Raven gets to display my least favorite character trait of hers, getting all judgmental and b1tchy and sarcastically telling Clarke: “Your father would be so proud!” I dunno, Raven, if you think the people should be told the truth, why don’t you simply tell them? No one is stopping you.

Both Raven and Jasper compared Clarke’s decisions to that of Jaha and the rest of the Ark leadership. Except they forgot the minor detail that she hasn’t executed anyone, imprisoned anyone, or sent anyone to die.

Jasper is now in a very different, but still similar mindset from the one from season 3: he has embraced the “Seize the day” approach, and seems very cheerful, having a shower, singing, asking Monty to bring weed, and telling Clarke he doesn’t want them to survive, he wants them to live. But he is like that only because he knows it will all be over in a few months.

The song Jasper plays is “I Don’t like Mondays” by Boomtown Rats, which includes the line “Silicon chip inside her head”…

This is the last episode where Bryan appears, which is a shame, because he was an interesting character, and his and Miller’s relationship actually got some focus and development, unlike Miller’s mostly off-screen later relationship with Jackson. The actor got a role in another show, but instead of getting killed off, he was just written out quietly – he simply never appears after this episode, and we never learn of his fate. The first time I watched this, I didn’t even realize that the argument between him and Nate at the end of this episode was the end of their relationship, so I was later wondering “so where is Bryan?” when Nate and Jackson became a couple out of the blue. Rewatching this, I can see how this was the end of the relationship. I like the fact that Bryan (who, we have it confirmed now, is now the only survivor, aside from Riley, from the initial number of around 160 people who were on the Farm Station when it fell to Earth) refuses to condemn Pike and still feels loyalty to him – because it would be really unrealistic if everyone now had the same opinion about him. Bryan confirms that he basically never stopped supporting Pike, who he felt loyalty to because he saved his life and they spent several months fighting together, and simply chose his boyfriend over him. But I think the main reason why the relationship broke was not just political differences, but because, after Miller didn’t support or understand Bryan’s decision to prioritize freeing the slaves, Bryan felt that Miller doesn’t understand what he went through with the rest of the Farm Station people in those 4 months and the trauma and effect it had on him.

Timeline: It has been 9 days since the season 3 finale, which means it’s about 8-9 days since 4x01.

Body count:

In the flashback (which is technically in the timeline right at the end of season 3 or the beginning of 4x01), Ilian’s father, brother and mother got killed by ALIE-controlled Ilian. Add them to the list of people who died because of ALIE, We don’t see how the father died, but Ilian killed his brother and almost killed himself, and tortured his mother, and she eventually died of injuries.

Rafel, Trishanakru ambassador, killed by Octavia. (Good riddance- he was really annoying. We’ve seen way too many irritating whiny Grounders who rant about how Sky people are to blame for everything. That’s so last two seasons.)

Several Azgeda slavers got killed in the explosion of the hydro generator.

Tybe the head slaver, beaten to death by the freed slaves. Bryan revealed that he was the one who killed Monty’s father, saying he was therefore Monty’s kill, but Monty chose to do justice in a different way, letting the ex-slaves decide Tybe’s fate.

There are some pointers about the number of surviving people – from a list that Clarke made of the number of people that need to be saved. It’s a partial list: we learn that there are about 500 people Arkadia, 4000 in Polis (out of which 400 children), 300 in Tondc, and we see several smaller places with just a few people. Just counting the numbers we see, we get 4877 Grounders  in addition to 500 Arkers (obviously, neither are exact numbers, since the numbers for Polis, Tondc and Arkadia were rounded), but it’s clearly not a full list, as we don’t see the numbers for,  e.g. Boat people, Shallow Valley people, and many other villages and towns, so I don’t know if the numbers of Grounders in this part of Northern American territory is around 5000-6000 or more like 10.000.

12. moment/scene: something positive about the sequels here...I absolutely loved the scene in the rise of skywalker when the resistance is fighting in the space above exegol and everything seems hopeless, then lando shows up with hundreds and hundreds of other ships volunteering to help defeat the first order...poe’s face...it’s literally so powerful and made me cry out loud in the theater. 

13. kiss: I loved it when finn and poe kissed in the rise of skywalker! truly there were no other kisses in that movie :) 

14. fight: yall already know duel of the fates hits different.

15. line of dialogue: we are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the first order down.

16. book/comic: aaaa I can’t pick a favorite, mostly cause i’ve been growing up on sw books and haven’t read so many of them in such a long time, so i’ll just pick the one I read most recently? most recent book was a new dawn! I love one (1) man and his name is kanan jarrus... and my most recent comic was poe dameron which was fantastic

17. hero: luke skywalker or finn in TFA. both are pure, good, unproblematic, force-sensitive gays. still angry the mouse snatched what finn was supposed to be away from us by relegating him to literally the dumbest roles in TLJ and TROS, because he did not get the storyline that he was clearly meant to get from the setup in TFA. but in my mind, finn and rey teamed up to defeat the emperor in episode ix, and then finn became the jedi knight he was meant to be. and then they put kyle on trial for war crimes. and that’s that about that! 

18. villain: ehh idk maybe maul in the animated series.

19. outfit: very niche but hera syndulla’s fit in s4 of rebels in that episode where the team goes back to lothal goes super hard...clone wars obi-wan kinda snapped too.

The first draft of TFA had Poe dying when he crashed but you know, movies go through dozens if not hundreds of rewrites and little tweaks. The first drafts are not the final canon. But there is a very vocal part of the fandom that thinks that since Poe died in an early draft, he isn’t part of the new trio and they heap so much hate on him. Not as much as Finn but still. See a pattern?

I was doing Mass Effect: Andromeda but I got so bored. And I didn’t really feel up to going back to Fallout 4 just yet. Stardew Valley is just SUCH a chill game. I love it. No pressure, just fun. Even husbear is totally addicted. Of course then we have to fight over the console (I might sneaky buy it for his PC lol)

the jasmine postbirth arc wAS good but could have been so much better. like imagine if cordy didn't fall into a coma but finally woke back up in control of her body? what if cordy was the one trying to convince everyone that jasmine was evil?

Okay imagine this if you will: Cordy comes back from the higher plane and she is already pregnant. Angel is like Cordy, omg, and she tells him that Groo left her because he realized before she did that Cordy loved Angel. Cordy is going to take single motherhood in stride though and Angel agrees to help, that this can be a do over cause he is so kicking Connor out. Keep The Beast but don’t make Cordy evil. The Beast and Jasmine could have done this a million times so he knows his mission by rote. (Also no stupid evil Skip.) Also since Angelus knew The Beast, can still have those awesome episodes but the stakes are so much higher because of Cordy’s pregnancy. Could go SO dark with Angelus. 

Basically just have her and Angel bond over her pregnancy during an apocalypse. Angel gets more and more protective of Cordelia and is worried that Connor and this Beast character might try something. Cordelia is worried too, like most new moms are. So Angel convinces Cordelia to go someplace different before the baby is born. Full grown Jasmine pops out, Cordy goes comatose. Angel brings Jasmine back, everything plays out (but higher and bigger stakes) as Charisma is on her maternity leave. Last two episodes Cordy comes back, can see the truth, and has to convince the gang. And then Angel and Cordy have to try to kill what they though would be their child. FEEEEELS! (as a side note, love Spin the Bottle so how about one where some demon does it and Lorne saves the day)

Cut to S5 where Angel tries to reconnect with Connor but Connor pushes him away cause he is not a substitute kid. In S4 Connor organized a group of street folks ala Gunn to help keep LA safe while Angel was busy on babywatch. So it would only be like a month or so old since the Jasmine arc played out over weeks not months. Have a few episodes where they are clashing but eventually they team up to take down Wolfram and Hart together. A few episodes where they find things out, planning and leading up, taking down some small baddies. So no mind wipe, no nothing, no Lorne the murderer, Spike stays dead. Just the final shot is everyone (including Connor’s vigilante group) staring down the dragon. 

Now in my world we would get a S6 but since Denisof wanted gone, we replace him with Maggie Q. Tara comes back...but as a ghost. So we got some episodes kind of Spike-ish in that way. Also s6, I like the idea in the comics of LA going straight to Hell. You can mine that for A LOT of stories, new characters, etc. We have activated Slayers and BTVS cameos. Could easily do multiple dystopian seasons. I mean look at Walking Dead.
