“The green fin didn’t work out?” You asked, eyeing Toothless’ proud blue. Toothless was making it a point to whip his tail so that you could see it in its full glory, fins spread out all the way.

It seemed that Deadly Nadders weren’t the only dragons who were vain.

“Meatlug tore it,” It seemed Hiccup was back in his red tunic, which you had washed, folded and returned just the other day. He had his frog apron tied around his waist, dust and smoke smudging his face and rolled-up sleeves.

“Working on fixing up the green one. I was going to repair it, but…” He laughed awkwardly, following your eyes and rubbing his sleeves with his knuckles, maybe to try and wipe off the smudge or just self-consciously, you couldn’t tell.

“Oh, well,” You trailed off with a hum. You didn’t know blue pigment was so expensive. You figured that in town the other day, bartering with one of the old folks down by the docks. You felt sort of bad for giving Hiccup the tip, for a little while, but it seems he managed it pretty well. He probably had to do a fair bit of haggling for it, though.

“It looks really nice.” You complimented, shaking away your jitters.

Toothless snuffled at you from where he was besides, sidling up to the counter to flash his fin at Hiccup, for what was probably the millionth time.

“Yeah, bud, I see you,” Hiccup rolled his eyes.

You leaned your head away, shifting the pail in your hand, watching curiously as Toothless blew into your hair indulgently. 

Hiccup glowered sourly over your shoulder. Toothless gargled back.

The pail was for Flishlegs, filled with rocks for Meatlug,though you weren’t sure if he still needed it. You were falling slightly behind. Mrs. Ingerman might appreciate having the rocks in reserve if Meatlug ever got the bright idea to try and start eating at their nice, polished stone floors again. 

You would bring it up in conversation with her again the next time you had to do any laundering. She usually was kind enough to do boots for you if they weren’t yours, the one article you refused to touch on your own.

Speaking of jobs, and casual conversation;

“Do you know where the Thorstons… The twins, are? They said they had a job for me, or something.” You shrugged.

You had a point to coming down here, though you really did want to talk yourself out of asking for it.

“The twins?” Hiccup asked. 

Peering over the counter, you could tell he was fingering a small box. You wondered what it was for.

The weirdness only upped itself tenfold with him, sometimes.

You were glad he had to mind not to just stare and drool, like that one time. He was pretty supped up on Zippleback gas, then, and you still weren’t completely sure that the lightning strike hadn’t done anything to his brain. So you didn’t hold it against him.

“Yeah,” You confirmed, sighing with false casualty, “They’re really hard to find, though. Honestly, I thought their father was bad enough on his own.”

“Their father?” 

You nodded and hummed in response, “He’s never where he needs to be, according to Mrs. Thorstong, though I’m not sure how deeply I should be trusting in her word, considering all she does is talk about how big your dad’s muscles are.”

Toothless sad back on his haunches, finding something much more interesting in the ferns lining the stone platform the forge was built on.

“What?” Hiccup balked, “Really? That…”

“Sure is something, I know. “ You nodded sagely, “By the way, how have your burns been? I know Johannes has been having an issue with the blisters. Something about needing ointment. I think Gothi just made a fresh batch, he told me, so if you need to go up the spire…”

You remembered how awkward it was trying to haul Hiccup up the ladder to Gothi’s after the lightning incident. It was an exercise in strength you didn’t have. In the end, you had to get help. So maybe it was better that the two of you had Toothless. Or not, what with the flight ban and all.

You still felt pretty bad for the acid burns, though. 

“I-no, I’m totally fine. Great, even! Unless you wanted to come, then-ah… I guess I could…” Hiccup fumbled with the box, arms contorted at an uncomfortable angle, digging his nails into the space between the lid and body in a place he probably thought was just out of view, “Really, I was wondering if…” 

“So what’s the deal with Flight Club?” You blurted out. 

You bit your lip anticipatorily, counting the seconds as they dragged by between you asking an answer. You really, really wanted to ask. The twins had been talking about it, and pretty openly at that. 

You just hoped it wouldn’t compromise your position as primarily plot-unrelated in the meantime.

“Well, I- Oh-” Hiccup fumbled for an answer. He tried to step to the side in a move that was probably supposed to be casual, though he only managed to trip against the counter, and pretty awkwardly at that.

You heard something fall to the ground, as he must have knocked something down, setting off a loud clicking noise, before something large and fast bolted past your head, displacing hair. 

Toothless hissed and jumped, tail wrapping tightly around his four legs. He nearly knocked you over with the force of it all. 

You stiffened bodily as you heard a loud crash. The hairs on the back of your neck were definitely standing.

The bola must have burst through the roof of one of the large houses behind, as you could hear the beginnings of a long chain of muffled shouts from off in the distance.

“Ouch,” You winced.

“So, Gothi’s?” Hiccup asked, stumbling around the forge counter.

You looked back and forth around the empty clearing. It was actually very empty. What was usually bustling made up quite the ghost town. Unfortunately, you were afraid that soon, that would no longer be the case.

 “We should probably get going.”

“Yeah,” Hiccup nodded, hurriedly trying, and failing, to undo the knots of his apron.

You set down your pail, shaking your arms out and brushing your hands down your skirt.

I'm also gonna include my personal recipe for the Kiki's Delivery Service fish pie, because it's kinda involved, but it's really really good.

White Fish & Pumpkin Pot Pie

Full recipe under the cut:

-1 can pumpkin puree -1/2 yellow onion, diced -8oz (1 standard package) button or babybella mushrooms, sliced -4 cloves garlic, minced -6 tbsp butter, divided -roughly 1 qt milk -2 sheets puff pastry -capers (I know everyone uses olives for this recipe, but I have never thought they made sense here. Capers have a briny, more complex flavor that imo plays better with the other ingredients here) -2 bay leaves -a few sage leaves -2tbsp brown sugar -nutmeg -cinnamon -cayenne pepper -salt/pepper -about 1/2 cup grated parmesan -1 small egg, or heavy cream, for pastry wash -white fish

Let's talk fish for a second, because the quantity really depends on what kind you're using. This recipe doesn't require a lot of exact measurements, especially when it comes to this part. The Kiki recipe specifies herring, but I tend to use tilapia. You can also use haddock, cod, pollack, whatever you've got in your local grocery store. Hell, salmon could work here. For these quantities, I'd use 3-4 fillets depending on the size and shape of my casserole dish. If your fish is frozen, make sure you thaw it completely, and pat it dry before use. I use whole fillets, but if you're working with something especially thick, it might be good to cube it up first.

Preheat oven to 375F.

In a wide pan, melt 2 tbsp butter, and add your bay leaves and sage. On medium, saute mushrooms and onions until the mushrooms release their juice, and the onions turn translucent. Add garlic, saute another minute until fragrant.

Set aside to cool, and remove leaves. If there's any extra liquid at the bottom, save that to mix into the pumpkin puree.

Next step is gonna be making a basic bechamel sauce, so in another pan (or the same one, I'm not your dad) melt the rest of your butter. Once liquid, add in flour until a smooth paste forms (you may need slightly less or more than what's listed, measurements are really estimations this time round).

Incrementally add milk to the dough mixture, whisking often, until a thick sauce forms—it helps a whole lot if the milk is very cold. Season with salt, pepper, and about 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and remove from heat.

In a large bowl (or if you're very careful, still in the can), season your pumpkin puree with salt, pepper, brown sugar, and about 1/4 tsp each of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cayenne. If you saved any of the butter mixture from the mushrooms, add it here.

Time for assembly. In a large casserole dish, add each layer in the following order, as smooth and level as possible: bottom crust, then pumpkin, then fish, then mushrooms, then bechamel sauce, then grated parmesan, and finally top crust.

Cut a few vents into the top crust, and if you're adding any decorative fishies to be movie-accurate, do that here as well. Paint on egg wash, or cream, and boarder the pie with a few capers over the top. Tap the tray on the counter a few times to make sure there are no large air pockets within.

Bake 1 hour + 15-30 minutes depending on the thickness of your fish. Allow the pie to rest a few minutes before cutting into it.

You can use homemade pie crust for this, but store-bought works just as well.

Mushroom mixture, bechamel sauce, and pumpkin puree can be prepped ahead of time, and stored covered in a fridge for a day or so before you need them.

Makes about 6 servings.

Sage: Chapter Six - The Dragon Hater

Even with the consuming darkness, Sage hid in the shadows of the Viking huts. The moon had yet to reach its full peak. She could hear echoes of laughter coming from the Great Hall. She rolled her eyes, That much fun should be outlaws. All fun should be outlawed.

Little yellow Gronckle ran after her. Sage wished she could shake the little brat. Its bump, roughy surface rubbed against her leg whenever she halted for a moment, “No!” said Sage, “go away!” But no matter how many times she whispered, waved her arms or tried to lose the little guy, he graced her ankles with his bumpy hide. Her facade bubbled and danced with delight whenever Sage screamed or she felt the dragon rubbing against her ankle, This is just too easy!

Sage was not sure how long she wandered around Berk, ducking into shadows and diving into barrels at the sight of Vikings passing on the streets. Or how many times she re-positioned herself behind a house, and groaned at the Gronckle who sidestepped the meaning of ‘stealth.’

“You’re gonna get me caught!” said Sage repeatedly, her eyes drooping.

The little yellow Gronckle stuck out it’s chubby stub of a tail, it’s eyes widened.

Sage groaned, “Brat…” She trekked back the way she had come with the little guy trailing behind her. Her arms became heavier and heavier with every step she took. By the time she reached Dofrifjall’s house, Sage felt like she’d fall over at any moment.

No light leaked through the house windows. A moment of relief washed over Sage. She pictured herself turning the handle and top toeing across the floor silently, eventually settling into her odour filler room, and allowing sleep to overcome her.

But as her hand settled on to the doorknob, she felt something rough rubbing against her ankle.

Sage sighed, “What am I gonna do with you?”

‘Dump it’ screamed Sage’s facade, ‘in the forest. It’ll be safe there until dawn!’

‘No!’ said Sage’s gut, ‘Then you’ll have to spend half your morning looking for it! It’s your ticket into the dragon rider’s inner circle! Keep it close!’

‘I never thought of that’ said Sage’s facade, ‘but don’t take it in with you! That shows sentiment. Lock it in the family stable!’

The young viking stared at the small wooden stable attached to the family home, and approached it quickly with the baby dragon on her tail.

Sage pressed her ear against the barn door, but there was not a peep; only empty silence/ She put both hands on the door and pulled slowly to make as little noise as possible. The spacious area inside had little peep holes where moonlight steamed in, and on to the large pules of hay scattered throughout.

“Perfect,” said Sage, “in you go little butt.”

Little yellow Gronckle peered inside. As it stared, Sage rolled her eyes, and pushed the baby in with her foot. For a second, the baby Gronckle stared at sage. But a yawn escaped it’s lips, and it tumbled into a pile of hay.

Sage cleared the barn before the baby could change its mind. It was like a huge load fell off her shoulders. They felt lighter. She took a deep breath and smirked, “Goodnight loose. Thanks for volunteering.”

Tomorrow would be a new day.

Tomorrow, the read work would begin.

Afternoon approached faster the next day than Sage thought possible. Before she knew it, the sun had reached it’s peak, and she was staring at the little baby Gronckle.

“All right, little guy,” said Sage, “time to do your part.”

But Sage had thought all night until her mind had drifted into the deep realm of sleep, and she hadn’t figured out where Fishlegs could be. Finally, in the wee hours of the morning, she determined to visit the Dragon Training Arena first. If all else failed, she’d force the little Gronckle to follow her while she “hid” in search of her victim.

Sage rolled her shoulders, throwing glares at Vikings as they passed her. They muttered to each other, and stared for a second too long. Or she thoughts so. She never understood the fascination with staring, or why people did it “accidentally.” Did they want the other party catching them? Were they so dim witted that they couldn’t tell when they were staring? It was a mystery. Sage started towards the training arena, muttering nonsense to herself. Loud enough so it echoed and sliced through the air. Little yellow Gronckle’s stomach rumbled. Sage sighed, “After.” And she sped up with the little guy on her tail.

Minutes later, Sage stood outside the Dragon Training Academy with arms on hips. She peered inside, and found Fishlegs and Hiccup standing over something with their backs to her. Little Gronckle titled its head, eying her and panting like a dog. Sage glared it, “Play your role.” She knew it didn’t understand, but she didn’t care. She cracked her shoulders, and stormed into the arena, “FISHLEGS.”

A husky boy jumped five feet in the air. His hair was blonde, and his clothes brown and worn. A brown Gronckle and jet black Night Fury lay within the arena several feet away, but didn’t bother to stir. They only peered at her for a moment, before shutting their eyes and falling back to a deep sleep.

Hiccup and Fishlegs turned abruptly, keeping their arms behind their backs and smiling in a way that made Sage want to puke. Acting at their finest. Weirdos.

She crossed her arms over her chest, “What are you hiding?” Not like I care. But I gotta pretend, right?

“H-hiding?” said Hiccup, “we aren’t hiding anything. What could we possible be hiding?”

Sage sighed, “I don’t actually care. Fishlegs,” she turned to Fishlegs, tilting your head, “I hear your the Gronckle expert in these parts.”

“E-expert?” said Fishlegs, “I wouldn’t say I’m an “expert-”

“Great,” Sage took a step to the left, exposing the little yellow baby, “get rid of it.”

“E-excuse me?”

“Get rid of it,” said Sage. The little yellow Gronckle closed the gap, and rubbed its bumpy hide on her ankles, “I don’t care how. I want it gone.”

Silence creeped by for several minutes. Sage couldn’t decided who to stare at. Hiccup’s face fell, and Fishleg’s head fell back.

Sage glared, “Now!”

Hiccup and Fishlegs exchanged looks for a second, “I don’t think that’s possible.”

“What?”

“And even if it were,” said Hiccup, “w-why would you? It’s a dragon.”

“Are we gonna to run around the bush again?” said Sage, shaking her foot, “it’s following me. It’s creepy. If you can’t get rid of it, get it away from me.”

Seconds of silence rolled by. Sage deepened her glare and crossed her arms over her chest. These losers stared at a loss. She caught a glimmer of disappointment in Hiccup’s eyes.

“Dragons are amazing creatures,” said Hiccup. Sage bit the bottom of her lip as if bracing for a long lecture. Correction. She was bracing for a lecture, “with their own unique abilities.”

Fishlegs nods his head, “And Gronckles-“

“Shut up,” said Sage, “I didn’t come for a lecture.”

Fishlegs snaps his mouth shut, pulling his arms tighter against his clothes.

“I came to get rid of the dragon,” said Sage, “I don’t want it following me. But if that is impossible for you,  I underestimated your abilities as dragon riders. I will do it myself.”

Sage turned her back on the duo and stormed away, with the Gronckle on her tail. She swore she heard a small growl come from the pit of its chest before it retreated after her.

“Inspired! I know!” Sasha sang over him, “And yes yes, I am well aware Sir Elias requested the typical sandwiches and sweets and the like, as fancy as possible. As dull as possible, more like. So, I had an idea! I was struck with inspiration from the culinary muses themselves! I thought to myself, ‘what if the sandwiches were sweet and the sweets were savory?’ Eh? Genius, am I right?”

Indeed, her grand scheme included such chimerical inventions as pickled apple sandwiches on rye, sage-flavored French macarons with a turkey gravy filling, cold roast-strawberry sandwiches with mayonnaise, and haddock scones. Jon didn’t even want to imagine how haddock could wind up inside a scone. He closed the ledger and closed his eyes mournfully as he laid his hand atop it like one might atop a casket.

“Sasha…”

“Ah, here it comes.”

    in a version where geralt doesn’t go to yennefer’s tent, where jaskier doesn’t sleep on the ground cradling his lute close like it’s the only thing keeping him warm, where there’s a spare corner of a log near the fire and everyone else has decided to sleep before making the rush to the dragon in the morning. 

    in that version, geralt stays up thinking about jaskier’s offer, watching him cross out words in his songbook and humming a few scant notes before shaking his head and starting over. still thinking about what pleases him, no doubt. what pleases him. the question is one that geralt hadn’t considered much, besides the immediate needs and problems that come with living, he’d never stopped to consider what might be a pleasure, what it meant to him. 

    he stares at jaskier, turning the question over in his mind. when had he last felt pleasure, been pleased by something? or someone. unbidden, the thought of fish comes to his mind. of a night spent next to a river, jabs over how much he’d managed to catch and how his skills hadn’t improved since the djinn and yet the soup, filled with skillfully flayed pieces of haddock, settles warm in his stomach, impressed by jaskier’s cooking despite his noncommittal grunt at the taste. 

    he thinks of water, warm and smelling of honeysuckle mixed with sage, because it’s easier to get a bard a bath than a witcher when staying at an inn, but jaskier’s salts and powders remain after he’s left the water. but he never leaves, not really, always perched on the side of the tub, hands handling the soap and ointment geralt’s wounds ache for and fingers moving over his skin with more tenderness than he can handle while he waits for a potion to leak from his eyes.

    he thinks of cloth, sun-dry and fresh, of a needle darting in and out in silver streaks like the flanks of a salmon swimming upstream in fits and jumps. of sitting on the banks in undershirts, sleeves brushing together from the touch of the wind and mingling the lace on one with the black of another. thinks of finding one chemise in his pack after they part, still holding the smell of jaskier in its threads as he pillows his head on it months later. 

    and maybe if the coast holds all those things, promises the same pleasant burst of golden warmth as those moments had, he sees why jaskier would want to go.
