It's the second-to-last day of my vacation. I went for a very nice hike and then made an executive decision to curmudgeon the fuck out. (Being Autistic/an introvert, vacations around people are actually very stressful for me.)
Anyway, I got a lot of writing done--a sketch about a man trying to get off a roller coaster, except the roller coaster is a metaphor and I'll pitch for my (virtual) grad review.
But in terms of fic stuff, I worked on an old Garou x Genos story that had been rattling around in my head for a long time, and I apparently got some bonus "Saigarou if you squint" stuff. sorry not sorry the "brotp & sometimes ot3 tag" exists for a reason.
Somewhere at some point, somebody (maybe you? please tell me if it's you!) thought, "what if other characters have visions of this different reality that was so narrowly avoided at the end of the monster arc? what if it shows up in dreams?" and, well, my brain took that and ran.
assume they just went for a run or something together and now they're having breakfast.
Garou: I keep having nightmares. Nightmares where I hurt him. Nightmares where we save the world together. Where you save the world from... me. Does that sound weird? Is that crazy? Saitama: No, no, it's not. I get it. And let me guess--you're on earth, but it isn't earth anymore. It's a dead planet. And I'm fighting you, but you aren't you. Garou: shit, yeah. that's exactly what happens. but why are we having the same dreams? Saitama, with genuine disregard: dunno, isn't that supposed to be a soulmates thing? [[Garou spits coffee]] Garou: I honestly do not know which scenario is more terrifying. one where I accidentally destroy the world, or one where you are my soulmate. Saitama: the first problem solves the second one, though, doesn't it?
[[uncomfortable pause]] Garou: I am taking all of these bagels and I am leaving immediately.

You are the sun. The divine light that shines over all of Kartha, bringing warmth and life to the entire empire.
At least, you are supposed to be.
In reality, you are the cursed heir. Loathed by your people and scorned by your court with the weight of everyone’s expectations on your shoulders and the remains of a shattered empire at your feet.
Tumblr media
The sun has been murdered and the Karthinian Empire is plunged into darkness and chaos. Winter descends upon the Kartha now that Empress Vasha sits upon The Golden Throne and without the sun to keep it away, the darkness grows ever nearer threatening to consume the empire.
A more in-depth summary
Your mother Empress Vasha is known for her stunning beauty. With her grace and charm she seized the heart of the Emperor and after his death she took over his Empire.
Now she rules Kartha with a frozen fist, keeping it in eternal winter with her mystic gifts. But her beauty begins to fade and strangely, so do her powers.
She instructs you to descend into the Darkness where the goddess Resha supposedly resides and steal her tears which grants those who use it eternal youth. The only trouble is, the goddess has never been known to cry.
As you set out on your journey and observe life as you’ve never seen it before, everything you have ever been told slowly falls apart and your loyalties are called into question as you unravel a web of lies that goes deeper than initially perceived.
Tumblr media
This story takes place in the Karthinian star system where the sun and monarch are one and the same. Kartha is an empire spanning several planets each with different lore, economics and social issues the later two which you can improve (or make worse!) as you travel across the empire. The time period in terms of historical similarity would be the industrial revolution with some Victorian elements.
Tumblr media
Restore your house to its former glory or bring an end to the monarchy.
Are you more magically or technologically inclined? Decide which way you want to lead your empire.
Unearth the truth behind the darkness, why it exists, what creatures lie within it and beyond.
Raise an ice dragon, if you can hatch it (no, you don’t sit on it)
Customizable MC with several skills and interests to choose from.
Six ROs you can befriend, or make your enemies.
Elevate yourself as an all powerful deity and earn the ire of the gods.
Tumblr media
Saigar | 23 | Male | Attracted to women |
Saigar was raised to take over his father’s role as Admiral of the Imperial fleet. He has spent his life split between court, his family home on Iloria and the most elite military schools in Kartha. Apart from being a skilled pilot and fighter, Saigar is an enthusiastic patron of the arts and devotes his time not spent on his duties painting, drawing and attending shows put on by the theater. He is generally warm and friendly behind his stoic exterior but wary of forming deep relationships.
Grilla | 26 | Male | Attracted to men |
Always brooding and glued to the shadows, Grilla is the only person your mother seems to trust and your mother is the only person who seems to know anything about the quiet spy.
Kain | 23 | Male | Attracted to both men and women |
At a glance he might appear to be a reckless, debauched pirate with no thought for laws or order and he is to an extent but he’s also an avid reader and budding scholar who speaks six languages. He has a charming smile, easygoing nature and is always seeking a new adventure.
Xantara | 21 | Female | Attracted to men and women |
She was born and raised on Mount Ulda which is home to the strictly female academy of elite assassins called The Onaise Saints who are widely known and feared for their elegant fighting skills and their ability to “charm you onto their swords.” Their reputation as charismatic killers have earned them the nickname Sirens of the blade. Xantara is aloof, saying little but observing all. Her wit is sharper than her bladed fans- her favorite weapon and staple of the saints.
Savago | 22 | Female | Attracted to men |
She is the spoiled jewel of House Syione, a once wealthy and illustrious house which has fallen on harsh times and is barely scraping by sustained only by it’s good name an connections. Under her external facade of a perfect noble lady, Savego possesses sharp wit, deadly cunning, and fierce determination. She will see her house returned to its former glory no matter the cost.
Blanca | 21 | Female | Attracted to women |
She is an orphan from one of Cersna’s floating cities and a skilled mechanic. Her head is usually buried between cogs, engines and sprockets but if you manage to get her attention, a well timed joke or pun will earn you some warmth. She has a great sense of humor and loves to laugh.

OPM Manga Update 209 Review
Yup, get your coffee, tea, or drink of choice: this is another long one.
Story
Well, how this is a turn up for the books. The chapter opens with Lightning Max helming a search party for Tareo.  Waganma spots what looks to be a massively bloated dead body and Sekingar tries to shield the boy from the grisly sight. Fortunately, it turns out to be Pig God and as he turns himself face out to spit out a mini fountain of seawater, it turns out he’s fine. As are presumably, the contents of his stomach.
We cut away to Garou trying to hit Saitama, who dodges even more obnoxiously than before, asking if Garou’s got any more hands to throw. In response, Garou creates two more arms, which he tries to pummel Saitama, trying to overwhelm the hero with *attack*.
Tumblr media
Realizing quickly that even this is not going to reach Saitama, Garou opts for a more creative approach, pushing Saitama with two hands, and purposing the other two hands as jet propulsion.  By now, they are far from civilisation and appear to be in a snowy mountain range.  Garou pile drives Saitama so hard onto a mountain peak that the entire mountain inverts. The resulting shock wave is so great that it propagates clean through the planet and...
...comes out on the other side, in what would have been the Pacific ocean if the supercontinent we know and love were Europe. In this trackless ocean, a plane is beginning to sink, its passengers, a school class, all frantically trying to stay afloat.  The class teacher barges his way onto one of the lifeboats, but his attempt to abandon his charges goes awry when suddenly, they’re on land, water cascading over what’s become a cliff, carrying the lifeboat with it.  Not to worry, the teacher fetches up on a temple with a dragon’s carcass draped on it. All around, land is rising up, first mountains, then buildings, fields... a bizarre reconfiguration of the Earth’s geography.
This has not gone unnoticed.  Blast and his shadowy company of God-botherers notice the strange perturbations in the Earth’s magnetic and gravitational fields and are even more perturbed to realise that the planet has developed a bulge.  An unsightly bulgy-boobed elf woman thingie diagnoses its cause: a tectonic plate previously in the process of being subducted has been freed and has bobbed back to the surface (in improbably non-geological time). A couple of other shadowy figures wonder how, but Blast brings the speculation to an end by pointing out that they've a seal to go repair before You-Know-Who breaks loose and they leave.
Tumblr media
Back with Saitama and Garou (dare I say Saigarou? Am I going to hell?), Saitama just looks up at Garou and the latter knows it’s all over.  Indeed it is as Saitama punches him repeatedly in an overwhelming cascade of fists Garou can’t keep up with, that shatter his newly-grown arms to dust, that drive them up and out of the hole in the ground, and that finally send Garou clean through two mountain peaks to come skidding to a halt in a watery flatland.  As the water splash comes down on them like rain, Saitama walks up to Garou and asks if the latter is satisfied.
Tumblr media
The full futility of his fight sinks into Garou. It’s clear to him now that far from being the prophesied disaster Lady Shiwababwa spoke of, it’s rather this bald guy who has gotten God riled up. He will never defeat this man; indeed, it’s just as he feared, that he could never succeed in his quest. Garou rushes Saitama in a suicide bid, but Saitama stops his fist with a hand and tells him it’s over. For emphasis, Saitama squeezes that fist and the pain of it drives our erstwhile Hero Hunter to his knees.
Tumblr media
Garou asks Saitama to kill him, but Saitama instead suggests hearing out the latter’s issues with heroes in the wrecked remains of what was a house. They pull the scattered furniture into some semblance of homeliness and clean off the table. Incredibly, the overhead light looks to still work. Saitama takes his shoes off and sits across from Garou to listen in silence.
Tumblr media
And that’s where the chapter ends.
Much meta after the cut.
Meta
Heroes are
Just as I’d hoped, the heroes didn’t abandon Tareo once they realised he was missing. It’s very interesting to me that most of heroes actively looking for the boy are those who checked themselves out of hospital and came to help unbidden.  So much for pro-heroes being motivated by the money.
I had no doubt that Pig God would survive, but quite how he got his jacket back, I think that may be a continuity error.
You know you’re too much of a simp when...
...you feel a tiny pang of sadness over seeing Sekingar’s wedding ring.  It’s right though: he’s too good a guy to leave on the shelf.
Tumblr media
Intelligences vast and warmish?
Didn’t expect to see Blast’s crew so soon and they look to be a muttley (no, I don’t mean motley) multi-species crew. Like most other people, I’ve clocked what looks to be at least a relative of Boros’s. Just goes to show that if you’ve met an alien, then you’ve met an alien. Boros deciding to use his great strength for destructive self-gratification doesn’t mean than others of his kin have to do the same.
Let’s see how much trouble they cause when they show up to do something about both the critter they’re trying to keep under seal and the source of the disturbance.
The coming war
I’m just going to touch on this briefly, because it deserves its own post.  A newly reappeared land is absolutely certain to cause trouble as it’ll fuel territorial ambitions. Even if there really is but one government left, we know there are a lot of powerful non-state actors and you’d better believe that where there’s resources to be hand, there’ll be trouble.   I don’t know about the webcomic, but things are about to get very hot in the manga.
Tumblr media
AND NOW THE BIG META: DR SAITAMA IS IN
When I saw Saitama walk away from Tareo promising that he’d take good care of Garou, I did quip that Dr Saitama was going to see his most interesting case and it’s coming to pass.  Garou sitting meekly across from Saitama is a very relevant call back to Genos first seeking audience with Saitama.
All fights end in conversation, if the participants are to have an ongoing relationship. Even wars end in negotiation, once it’s clear that fighting will no longer serve either combatant's ends. Fighting the very people whose number he wants to join has worked very well for Garou, but now that Saitama has made it clear that fighting is not an option and that he’s not going to kill him, talking is what Garou has left. Like a wild-caught bronco that’s accepted that it won’t be throwing the rider, he’s going to have to consider another way of being.
Fortunately, he’s in good hands: this isn’t Saitama’s first rodeo. It’s because of Genos that Saitama has learned to listen. The truly transformative event in Genos’s life with Saitama was his thinking that Saitama wanted to listen to him. That someone as powerful as Saitama could be that humble was completely mind-blowing to Genos.
Tumblr media
It may have started as a misunderstanding, but in the interim, Saitama has really learned to listen. He’s learned to hear what Genos is actually saying and listen out for the pain beneath the anger. Most graphically in chapter 155, he didn’t need the details of what Genos had done to understand that what Genos was asking was whether he’d actually acted bravely or just chickened out. Garou is getting the benefit of a Saitama who has been developing as a mentor (yes, yes, he’s still not a great one, but he’s been becoming a better one).
Garou is also getting the benefit of a Saitama who has learned the power of shutting up and letting people say what’s in their hearts. King has had a hand in that as well – it’s because of Saitama’s silence that he eventually could confess to his actions.
Being listened to hasn’t solved Genos’s problems and it sure as heck hasn’t changed his character. It has, however, given him a more positive way to deal with the world and we’ve even seen him start paying some of it forward. I’m hoping that Garou gets at least that much out of Saitama. He’ll probably get more out of it as his formative experiences all hinge around not being heard. This is what Garou has been needing from the very start.
All his life, Garou has felt rejected and he has internalised the idea that he is an unsuitable person to act as a hero, which has meshed badly with his burgeoning heroic impulses. So he’s called himself a self-harming thing, a monster, and has tried to scare the world better as an object of hate rather than straightforwardly seek to improve it as a hero. There’s more nuances to it of course, but I’ve written about those elsewhere and it’s his feeling that he can never be accepted that’s at the heart of his woes.
Tumblr media
The manga has been very, very good at showing us that there’s no qualitative difference between the pro-heroes Garou hunts and Garou himself. The problem is one of his self-image and self-perception.  And fortunately, he’s talking to the one guy who will hear his pain and understand exactly where he’s coming from.
Unfortunately, you don’t need to be lady Shiwababwa to know that this counselling session is going to get interrupted. Just a question of who by and how badly.
I can’t wait for the next instalment.

Can you explain garou x saitama? I really don’t see it but I’d like to know your opinion.
Haha, oh my goodness, this was such a lovely ask to get <3 I’m honestly excited to respond (and maybe a little nervous, haha). So, thank you again, beloved nonny, for asking with an open mind. :D
As I mentioned, I’m a bit nervous because the answer is likely weirder than you expect, and that’s because it’s kind of a personal answer? And I (IRL) also tend to be a lot weirder than most people expect. But when it comes to writing, that’s generally the sweet spot, so here goes nothing.
So, I tagged it as Platonic! Garou & Saitama** meaning it’s not romantic or sexual, at least, not in the traditional sense. I could talk for days about what I find appealing--I answered a similar ask on my main blog a few years ago, and my answer is still the same.
** actually I used “x” rather than “&” and in retrospect, I’m not sure if that’s correct. I’ll have to look into it more. But anyway, Garou and Saitama are foils: they have overcome similar obstacles, they grapple with similar despairs—including overwhelmingly strong emotions and/or the perceived absence of them, which is just as conspicuous and painful. I can’t help but feel if their journeys towards physical strength stem from the same place, which is that they are running from questions they don’t want to answer, and parts of themselves they’d rather avoid.
On a lighter note, though, they’re both a little goofy—I like to imagine they communicate almost exclusively in Dad jokes, and I have one scene drafted where they manage to derail a Hero Association meeting this way. You’ll find a lot of stuff under the brotp and sometimes OT3 tag, but more on that later.
In any case, I think that Garou & Saitama’s goofiness stems from the same place: time spent dwelling in dark places. I had a different reaction to That One Panel Where Saitama Threatens to Destroy the World, I thought, “hey, that’s relatable—most people who care deeply about others oscillate between pain and despair and anger, sometimes this results in dramatic outbursts, especially verbal ones; perhaps this will become a talking point later.” Based on later events/context, I no longer think that’s what the authors intended but I don’t think that interpretation is necessarily wrong—the first step to dealing with emotions is to name them. Anyway, I digress.
I myself am actually a gray ace, so when I imagine Garou and Saitama together, I just give them my ideal relationship which is all of the closeness and all of the shenanigans, but none of the sex. Because at the end of the day, I personally just want someone to gently kiss my hand and affectionately whisper “you’re the literal worst” while giving me the deepest and most genuine smile or drive up outside my window, honking and shouting “wake up, loser! We’re gonna spend all day driving around New Jersey doing nice things for people—but first we’re gonna get ice cream.”
(Anyway, if you follow my main blog or read my more personal posts, it is clear that I Have a Type. Like, really really-- I Have a Type.)
Getting back to OPM, though, when I write fics in particular (but also incorrect quotes or headcanons), I write a lot about Garou and Saitama. I think first of all because it’s fun—they’re very strong but they’re also playful. Saitama is a self-professed “hero for fun,” Garou starts out more like a “villain for fun,” and through various interactions—with each other, as well as their respective anchors—they develop an overarching, shared goal that seems initially dissonant…. but in actuality, their visions are very much the same.
Ultimately, they want a safe and peaceful world for everyone, especially the people they care about. Most importantly, they’re trying to both navigate and improve a world that they themselves always seem to peripheral to & outside of; a world that doesn’t appear to be designed for people like them—even before they gained their incredible abilities.
When it comes to their interpersonal dynamics, though, I think that Saitama has this incredible and interesting ability to provoke reactions in other people without intimidating them. That's the role of the "Wise Fool" character, and I believe that's the archetype Saitama falls into. That levity helps others feel safer as they question their own goals and motives. Villains usually serve a similar role in a story--in a good story, they aren't just a plot device; villains challenge us to re-evaluate our assumptions, expectations, and sometimes our values.
...So, Garou does the same thing: he incites others to flip their perspective. But unlike Saitama, he’s deliberately more provocative and more deliberately irreverent. Saitama certainly can be this way, too, but with Saitama it's usually by accident--but then again, it's hard to tell with him. Despite being perceptive and canny, Saitama is often evasive about the things he knows—at the same time, he doesn’t hesitate to get on a soapbox when he feels like he needs to: Saitama wants to save people from themselves as much as he wants to save them from external threats.
…and because Saitama so often ends up in silly situations, it makes him approachable. As we saw with Reigen and Mob in the MP finale, sometimes we serve others best by showing up as our own divinely imperfect, authentically messy self—which Saitama does. Constantly. (And Garou too! I think the most charming thing about his character, when I first encountered him, was the way Garou laughs off various defeats with beautifully insouciant amusement, so delighted to be growing and learning--which is exactly what Saitama wants for himself, and by extension, the sort of person he might gravitate towards).
In the Before Times, when the MA Manga Finale was but a twinkle in the mangaka’s eye, I imagined Saitama and Garou meeting post (WC fight): Garou is working as a delivery guy (of course), and while on break, he hears somebody screaming inside the grocery store he had been stocking. Lo and behold, and it’s Saitama. Saitama is covered in highly corrosive monster goo, watching in horror as all of his coupons disintegrate—along with his clothing. (Spoiler alert: Saitama is not at all concerned with his clothing).
...understandably, the poor, terrified clerk doesn’t want to take Saitama’s money (which is rapidly eating away the counter) and Garou covers his tab. Garou mutters something like, "for obvious reasons, it pains me to see you like this." Saitama interprets this as longing / jealously and pats the kid on the back with an acid-covered hand, assuring Garou the he will also eventually save the world in his own way--maybe even as a hero. (Garou, meanwhile, is thinking "forget about saving the world... I don't wanna live on this planet anymore"). While maintaining full eye contact, Saitama swipes the entire take-a-penny-leave-a-penny jar and vanishes. It's not a meet cute or anything, it's just it's a weird little moment of catharsis and the beginning of their friendship. It is endgame Gearou, though.
When Genos shows up the next morning to pay Garou back, Garou jokingly asks for 150% interest which Genos pays without blinking. ("Sensei's credit rating leaves much to be desired.")
Anyway, I just feel like there are so many opportunities for Saitama to accidentally get Garou to open up about his feelings. I have a rough draft of the “Dr. Saitama” scene where Garou is pouting silently in several inches of mud, pointedly ignoring Saitama until Saitama comes back with that jar of weird-looking eggs in the upper left corner of the shack scene panel. “I didn’t know you could pickle eggs,” Saitama comments. “I thought you could only pickle pickles.”
At which point, Garou snaps, absolutely indignant that this two-bit asshat cannot grasp the concept of a cucumber. My sense is that Saitama did this on purpose--intentionally prodding Garou a bit, trying to help him express his very real, very painful emotions in a way that feels safer, less frightening. I literally never know what Saitama is doing in my fics though. Probably because Saitama doesn't reliably know that, either.
In the same way that Saitama riles Garou up just enough to make him learn something, Garou riles Saitama up just enough to make him emotional--for example, by discerning Saitama's inexplicable fear of elves and adjusting his Christmas decorations appropriately. It's another Gearou fic, but Saitama is--as I always imagine him--just there, living in the same house, being part of their chosen family. I headcanon that they are always arguing about this (“You said you missed having feelings!” “Not these ones!”). It’s just constant, low-level benign trolling in a way that accidentally makes them both into other people.
So, I don’t really have many romantic headcanons or scenarios with the two of them, although I have entertained the idea. And, admittedly, I do have that “BroTP and sometimes ot3” tag. I’ve kind of entertained the idea of some scenario where the three of them are in a polycule? But it has literally always come from a place I never expected, like I fall asleep after editing a Gearou story and then whatever scene I’m workshopping somehow seeps into my dreams… at which point, the characters nitpick everything I’ve got wrong, including the relationship. “They’re not dating. We are. Don’t you see it?” (Ummm… no I don’t? At least not in that particular instance. Because these are not sexy dreams, mind you, just Exceedingly Vanilla, G-Rated anxiety dreams.)
If I hypothetically wrote a romantic and/or NSFW SaiGarou fic, I imagine it might have something to do with the fact that pain is the only emotion Garou allows himself to feel… and Saitama has already seen him at his worst, and, at the same time, hasn’t been phased by it. So I can imagine a situation where Garou knows he has to revisit that part of himself in order to heal and overcome it—that feeling of being broken and vulnerable but also safe and free, and given that he’s probably a bit touch starved you can see how things might progress from there.
Anyway. If something like this shows up on ao3 a year from now, you will know that it definitely was not me.
So, wow, there’s my answer—something like 1.3k words later :-/ if you’re still here, thanks so much for coming to my Ted Talk. I actually did have a little bit of material prepared in hopes that someone would someday ask me a variation of this question, so I’m grateful to you. This was a really nice thing to wake up to, and well-timed because I woke up at 5a and couldn’t get back to sleep. Also, gosh I'm tired. I hope this all makes sense when I wake up, and please forgive any silly spelling mistakes.
Stay safe and well, Friend!
