Various Artists — Measure, Pour & Mixtape: Music for Cooking (Spinster)
It’s somewhat surprising that an organization that describes itself as a “feminist record label” should make its second mixtape compilation about food and cooking, among the most stereotypical and traditional of female activities. However, as the tape demonstrates, different women have different attitudes about the domestic arts — some warm and comfortable and full of love, others rebelling against the forced servitude that is so often entailed. I myself had a brief period in my mid-20s when I refused to cook out of some sort of inchoate resentment of the patriarchy. I came around when I realized that eating would be a lot more enjoyable, not to mention cheaper, if I learned some of the basics.
In any case, this diverse and lovely collection reclaims the kitchen for artists and thinkers, and significantly, not all of them are women (Avey Tare and Michael Hurley contribute cuts, as well as the mixed gender Magic Tuber String Band). They come primarily from the more adventurous end of folk music that Spinster focuses on, but not entirely. There are Inuit throat singers of PIQSIQ and the improvisatory percussionist Jess Tsang (who incorporates an electric mixer into her track) to break up the picking.
The tracks are so lovely and so much each its own world that it’s to choose favorites, nonetheless Sally Anne Morgan’s luminous “Grain Song,” imbues country fiddle and plucked strings with otherworldly resonance, while Lou Turner’s “Ride the Melting” is characteristically smart, surprising and beautiful. Magic Tuber String Band’s minor key hoedown “Bill Henseley’s Hoppin’ John” is as satisfying as the grain-based sustenance it celebrates, while Little Mazarn’s “Thankgiving,” limns happy memories with melancholy in banjo, bowed saw and plaintive voice.
The prompt for all the tracks, apparently, was “If you made music the way you cook, what would it sound like?” and poet Crystal Good’s “Food Poem” answers that question with silence. Good doesn’t cook, and her track makes it plain why not, in the blighted relationship between her mother and step-father, where nothing was ever good enough, and the happier pairing of her dad and step-mother, where food defined the woman of the house to the exclusion of everything else. The track is a bit of an outlier in a compilation that generally celebrates cooking and food and family, but a bracing one. Like the handful of bitter greens that makes the soup so good, her anger makes the rest sound all the more inviting. Women and food. It’s complicated.
Is the Government supporting small businesses properly?
On Monday of the previous week the Government held the second reading of the Non-Domestic Rating Bill and most of the MPs who took part in the debate were Conservatives. One of them was Sally-Ann Hart from Hastings and Rye. She ended up stating that “Overall, the Bill is welcome as a positive step in the right direction. We must do all we can to protect our retail sector. The Conservative party…
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

STOP MVP: Artists From WV, VA & NC Against The Mountain Valley Pipeline / Measure, Pour & Mixtape: Music for Cooking
Two outstanding comps for your consideration! First up, we've got the Daniel Bachman-curated STOP MVP, which is raising funds for the Appalachian Legal Defense Fund in support of people fighting against the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. A worthy cause! The music here leans in the avant-folk direction, but it also dips into hip-hop, alt-country, ambient and more. Some familiar favorites appear — Nathan Bowles, Yasmin Williams and Bachman himself — alongside plenty of new-to-me talents; I love the dreamy pedal steel swoops of the Skyline Boogie Boys in particular.
There's a bit of artist crossover on Measure, Pour & Mixtape — the great Sally Anne Morgan and Magic Tuber Stringband, for instance — along with such ringers as Michael Hurley, Avey Tare and Lou Turner. Curated by Spinster Sounds' Emily Hilliard, MPM takes a revealing look at the intersection of food and music. "What would an audio recipe sound like?" asks Hilliard. "How is a recipe like a musical score?" The answers from the musicians here are imaginative, inviting and sometimes weird. A perfect blend of flavors.
I make period drama style gifs. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

Sally Anne Morgan’s last album, the pandemic-recorded Cup, felt abstract and cerebral, a folk music broken down into atoms and reconstructed in surprising ways. Carrying, by contrast, has a rich, warm profusion to it, a fertility that, perhaps, reflects Morgan’s own experience of becoming a mother for the first time. It also brings in the band in a way that all-solo Cup did not, enlisting psychedelic folk regulars like Nathan Bowles, Andrew Zinn and Joe DeJarnette to fill out lilting folk-nodding songs and nudge them close to rock.
Morgan is, of course, a force in contemporary, cosmic folk, hewing close to tradition in the hymnal-loving House and Land and spinning out wild in sprawling Pelt. She also oversees Spinster Records, a female-centric, folk experimental nexus of creativity that introduced Rosali and Lou Turner to the world. Her own work pushes gently against convention, acknowledging it, understanding it, but refusing to be constrained by it. She upends the rules so fluidly that it causes no friction; the songs are old and modern at the same time.
Consider, for instance the lilting purity “Streets of Derry,” a fine old Irish air about love and politics and death by gallows. Two guitars dance together in shimmering air, and Morgan sings a duet with Joseph O’Connell, all very true to the song’s origins. The synth or e-bow that hovers over the tune, though, gives it a strange, ghostly oddity that doesn’t in the least distract or feel tacked on.
Or listen to “Awake” with its liquid lines of blues folk guitar, its effortless cascades of vocal melody. A roughness slips in with long, vibrating tremolo tones, but rather than contradict the song’s tone, this hint of corrosion only underlines the lovely, fleeting nature of Morgan’s song.
“Diamond Joe,” a Ramblin’ Jack Elliott cover, is, perhaps, the disc’s most visceral and fully fleshed out song, with its martial beat and jangling tangle of guitars. Ripley Johnson from Rose City Band stops by to spin out questing, cosmic country riffs in between verses, and Morgan sings with fluting, flickering transparency, but the song kind of rocks. Where Cup presented an intricate and lovely puzzle, Carrying takes your hands and draws you into a whirling eddy of sensation. It is open-hearted and generous and full of gorgeous moments.
Sally Johnson’s first episode as a regular. One of the most memorable short-term characters, and she definitely had a great first episode to set up who she was.
