Is HNL Connected to Pennhurst?

(and why the show might not done with Pennhurst)

This is a thought I had when thinking about Victor’s fate in Pennhurst. We know for a fact that HNL has a connection to what happened with his family in at least some capacity, considering that they managed to get their hands on Henry and cover it up pretty quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised if Victor’s placement in Pennhurst was somehow orchestrated by the lab.

The patients and nurses of Pennhurst wear mostly white, not unlike the children and orderlies of the lab.

Also peep this patient with similar hair to Brenner:

Pennhurst is named after a real asylum that shut down in ‘87, and while we don’t see a lot of how show Pennhurst works, the lab actually functions pretty similarly to how irl Pennhurst worked.

IE, a lot of patient abuse and basically being a prison rather than a hospital.

There’s also the boys speculation in s1 that El could’ve been from Pennhurst, only for it to be revealed that she’s actually from HNL.

How do we know that the patients at Pennhurst are being treated the same way?

I guess there’s no confirmation, but there are some hints. When Dr. Hatch is giving Robin and Nancy the tour of Pennhurst he says this—

Idk man, if there was ever a veiled way to say “They can’t escape, they don’t choose to be here and they don’t like it here” this would be it. I think Robin bringing into question whether or not they can escape in the first place makes it clear that they are drawing attention to this point, why even talk about this point in the first place if it isn’t a question that the patients want to be there?

Why would HNL and Pennhurst have a connection anyway?

Honestly, some kind of agreement between HNL and the lab would be super beneficial for both parties, and I imagine something like that would have formed during the MK ULTRA days. The lab could get rid of cases that either cause a problem for them and/or prove to potentially be dangerous, and Pennhurst would recieve new patients. Or at least, that’s what I speculate their agreement could be. HNL has a place to lock up Victor so he can’t blab about anything supernatural that he witnessed, and even if he did, he would just be seen as another “nut job” at Pennhurst.

Why would Pennhurst be brought back to the show?

Now I don’t know this for sure (as is true with any theory of mine) but I believe that Pennhurst may be brought back in season 5.

Despite Robin and Nancy only being there for Victor, we get a pretty extensive tour of the place. Granted this could just be here to plant the thing about music, but the way that Pennhurst is established here doesn’t make it feel like a location they would used for only one episode. Why go into so much detail for a single episode location? Why go through the trouble of familiarizing the audience with the layout and part of how it functions if not to bring it back later?

I don’t know exactly what kind of storyline they could use at Pennhurst, but I don’t think it would be out of place nor would it take the place of any other important plotline. Rather, especially if Pennhurst is connected to the lab, I could see the location being used as a vehicle to deliver more information regarding the supernatural plot.

What’s the resolve for the Pennhurst plotline?

Let’s go back to that point about the patients wanting to escape. This has been hinted at, but not brought to fruition. When Robin and Nancy are escaping, we get a closeup of a patient who laughs as they run away.

Something that I stated earlier in the post is that Pennhurst is named after a real asylum that was closed in ‘87, which happened due the revelation of the abuse behind the scenes. We know there will be a timeskip in s5, and while it’s looking like it might be closer to ‘88, details of show Pennhurst don’t align exactly with irl Pennhurst. Penn irl is in Pennsylvania and show Penn is in Indiana, as stated in s1 by Lucas.

But still, if the show still intentionally took the name and some of the real asylum practices, one could assume that the show asylum might end up with the same fate.

IE the truth coming out regarding HNL and the abuse behind the scenes coming to light in the public eye, and more imporantly-

Ranting about Nancy’s season 1 wardrobe

I just have so many thoughts about Nancy’s season one wardrobe and how it helps to tell her story. Like she starts in these very traditional feminine soft colors with skirts and tights! Her hair is pulled back but it’s worn down. Then when Barb goes “missing”, we see a shift her hair is still down and she’s still in soft colors but she’s wearing pants (and dark pants at that). Then for the monster hunt it’s a very noticeable change into more traditionally masculine attire with the iconic ponytail (Especially glaring after the funeral outfit) but there’s still the pop of red in her jacket still that brightness. And like to hammer this wardrobe choice = symbolism home after she’s pulled from the UD she’s wearing the same outfit we’re introduced to her in like she’s desperately trying to regain normalcy. Contrasted with the next day for the hunt 2.0, she’s wearing almost entirely muted colors. And it's really the darkest we see her wardrobe all season excluding the funeral (where she still had her hair down). But I think the most interesting part is at Christmas we once again see her in this very soft, feminine outfit and it shows perfectly how Nancy has chosen to retreat back into normalcy and pretending like everything is fine even more than her going back to Steve. I just think that it’s too coincidental to not be intentional, and that the clothes are a great and unique medium to show Nancy’s character development and make sure her story isn’t lost amongst the other narratives that are happening.

Sam sees her more like a friend than a mum, they hang out all the time.

Bailey wanted the name Sam because she thought Sammy was a cute nickname.

Sam's favourite artists are Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

She loves softball, she tries to convince Bailey to play all the time and plays after school.

Her stims are jumping and flicking.

Sam's hyper-fixation are sharks.

She wears a lot of casual clothing.

She always has her hair short and hates having it long, she finds it hard to maintain otherwise.

Sam loves the rain and finds it very calming, when she loves to play in the rain and puddles.

She used to bring handfuls of bugs into the house and tried to make them her pets.

She tried to understand Bailey’s reasoning, but felt betrayed and lonely, she never had as close a relationship with Liu like Bailey.

She was made by Jason and was made to give him company, after so many kids betrayed him, he decided to craft his own, one that cares about him and doesn't take anything for granted.

It was made out of beeswax specifically for its durability and to protect her against heat.

She hates moths and butterflies, Kadanna hates insects in general, but the hatred and fear for moths and butterflies runs deep, the ones with eye patterns are worst.

She was created to look similar to Amelia, but he also wanted it to look like she could be his daughter, so it looks like a combination of Amelia and himself.

She's very polite and calm, kadanna knows not to be noisy or make messes.

She doesn't ask for much, but gets lots of toys and gifts anyway, she's very thankful to Jason.

She is very emotionally dependent on Jason, she doesn't like being too away from him, he's happy, she's over the moon, he's sad her world comes crashing down.

Kadanna loves watching him create things, she used to consider any new creation as family, and was horrified when he destroyed them, though Jason made sure it knew that the useless trinkets he was making were just that.

She does get pretty jealous when he makes a big, detailed project, though.

He gave her a small wooden doll because she was still attached to it.

Kadanna is a confident and shallow person.

She loves magicians, she finds them very talented and intriguing, Kadanna sometimes tries to replicate the tricks.

His biological dad had a horrible temper and brought it out on Alex, he always had some sort of bruise or wound on him.

His arm was broken when he was 5, after he didn't do what he was told.

Alex's biological mum left during the night when Alex was 5 years old.

He was put into foster by the age of 7, his teacher noticed bruises on him and how he's often brought to school dirty, Alex innocently told him what was happening at home, and CPS was called.

CPS was called numerous times previously but nothing happened.

It took Alex two years to get fostered and another year to be adopted by Jane and Mary, not many people wanted an older kid.

Alex was scared at first and it took him a year to be more comfortable, when he was adopted his behaviour changed drastically and would get very upset over the tiniest things until he adjusted.

He's still skittish around them and is overly polite, they try and reassure him that this is his new home and things are different now, and he knows it, but it's grown into him.

Alex likes sports and running around, he always wants to go to the park and meet new people.

His favourite sport is soccer.

He's always dirty, he could barely be outside but still manages to get something on him.

Alex loves anything sour, he tries to put has much of it in his mouth without a reaction.

He loves going on Mary's shoulders when going for walks.

Alex likes helping in the kitchen with Mary, he loves cooking in general.

They adopted Ariel, she was curious about her biological parents, because it's a closed adoption they didn't have much to go off of.

The twins were raised solely by Kate in her early years as Mark passed shortly after their birth.

Elisabeth favourite artist is Girl in Red and Cavetown, Scott likes Radiohead and imagine dragons.

Elisabeth and Ariel never had many friends, and when they did they didn't last long because of how often they used to move.

None of them are aware that Kate, Mark and Nina are assassins and they plan on keeping it that way.

Elisabeth is a very protective and hyper kid, but often has trouble talking to people.

She tries going outside and meet new people, she won't leave until she's talked to at least 2 people so she can improve talking to people.

Scott is a reserved person that gets loud and hyper when they're comfortable with people.

He trusted her almost straight away and helped her find the cabin and in return she let him stay and looked after him.

He gets bored in the cabin a lot and often goes wondering to keep himself occupied.

Raji is an active and extroverted kid, he loved playing sports with his friends, now he runs around with the nearby animals.

His powers are intangibility, super strength and possession.

He very rarely uses them.

He’s fluent Hindi and English, with an Indian accent.

John and Haley

Haley likes doing makeup and baking, she often practices on Vicky and Hannah.

They were with Susan for most of their childhood, they were told bits and pieces about Liu, they all had different opinions on him, Kimberly didn't, and still doesn't like him, none of them know the real reason why he wasn't around and she assumes it's out of necessity after Susan died.

Though he's grown on her she doesn't plan on keeping contact when they moves out.

Caleb was a mix of emotions but started liking him after he got to know him.

Steddie Soulmate Mark AU Prompt(w/ trans Eddie)

I want one of those soulmate AUs where people have like moving animal tattoos to represent their other half. They start off as baby animals and grow as their soulmate grows. And their tattoos are able to move onto their soulmates skin through touch and thats why shaking hands is important to tell if the animal will go onto the others skin.

And Steve is born and he thinks he has this little black snake that is his soulmate. Its cute and loves to dance along his shoulders and curl around his neck like a necklace. His parents tell him that snakes mean his soulmate is gonna be a little ruthless, a little cold blooded, but a lot determined.

As he reaches puberty though the snake unfurls and low and behold is actually a little wyvern dragon that has kept its wings and legs curled tight to its body through adolescence. It's horns start to grow into a beautiful curled crown on its head and it's scales remain all black except on the underside of its wings where there are spatterings of white, pink, and blue scales that look like stars against the dark.

But mythical creature marks come with a lot of superstitious belief like his soulmate will be crazy or a murderer or something along those lines. That his soulmate just isn't right.

His parents are pissed when they see it, and tell him he is better off without his soulmate because people represented by fantasy creatures are just going to be trouble for him.

And so Steve sleeps around and becomes a king among teenagers but he still secretly loves his little dragon. Knows his soulmate is beautiful and majestic and ignores when anyone jeers at him that he has a some crazy girl out there waiting for him in an asylum.

His dragon likes to show off and be seen, no matter how much he gets teased for having it, and will splay out on his chest with wings spread to preen any time he has his shirt off. The dragon likes to puff fire and smoke out whenever his soulmate is angry, and will curl around his heart when his soulmate is sad. Steve loves his dragon and even though they have a bad reputation, the other kids love it because its different.

When he learns monsters are very much real, he thinks that if someone is really bad then their mark would surely be a demagorgon. Ugly and vile and terrifying. It solidifies in his mind that his dragon can't possibly be what all the books say.

He thinks for sure Nancy has to be his dragon. She's fiery, determined, beautiful. She's not and the little bird she has won't go onto his skin and his dragon wants nothing to do with Nancy in turn. He is disappointed but falls in love with her all the same. His heart still gets broken when she tells him its all bullshit.

He thinks Robin too might be his dragon. She's smart, funny, playful. But then Russians drug them and she's sure as hell not into men when she shows him her own mark which is very clearly a female lion. He gets a Best friend and she tells him that she thinks his dragon is beautiful and so the person it belongs to has a beautiful soul.

But then Steve gets to thinking, because he's never seen someone with an animal so clearly the same gender as they are like Robin and her lioness. Hes only ever known people around him with the opposite like Carol and her male peacock for Tommy. He doesn't even know how to tell if his dragon is a boy or a girl and that confuses him more because he never even thought to look at boys and try to imagine them as his dragon. Wonders if maybe he should start.

Then In a boathouse scared for his life and with a bottle pressed against his throat, his beautiful dragon curls around his neck and then slides so easily across his skin onto Eddie Munsons hand.

Turns out his dragon doesn't mean anything bad or awful, it just means Eddie wasn't really born in the right body but his soul is represented just the way it was supposed to be. Magical and loud and beautiful.

Steve's soul animal could be whatever but I always figured he would be like a golden retriever. Because I mean. Look at that boy. And Eddie would be so confused that he got just such an ordinary animal because there's no way he would ever end up with a golden retriever boyfriend right?

Okay some actual ronance crumbs I found during my rewatch:

How quickly Robin becomes Nancy's right hand woman. Nancy says "everyone in groups of 2, Robin, upstairs" (slight paraphrasis) and Robin follows her. Robin enforces her will and defends her decisions. During the fight with the demobats, they cried each other's names a lot of times, Nancy shouting a bunch of orders that Robin quickly followed. You can tell Robin trusts Nancy's judgment a lot, and Nancy trusts her loyalty and smarts.

Speaking of trust, Robin seems to feel very safe with Nancy, confident that she won't let any harm come to her (well, to anyone in the group, Nancy is The Protector, but this is a ronance analysis). When fighting the demobats, Robin cries for Nancy's help. When they're in the upside down, she holds her hand looking for comfort. Nancy protecc.

Robin clearly thinks Nancy is a genius and trusts her ideas 100%. She clearly admires her, and that is a rare thing for Robin to do. But you can't tell me Nancy wasn't blown away by Robin standing her ground at the asylum the way she herself never seemed to be able to do in s3. In fact, I think Robin was the first person to ever defend Nancy from old men in positions of power who don't think she's capable enough. They just make an amazing team.

I really - and I mean really - hope that the next season of HH won’t pull the betrayal card out with the Vees, and specifically have Velvette be the one who betrays the guys for a power grab or something (or for Vox or Valentino to do a power grab betrayal either for that matter). Even though I know it’s not my call, for once I’d like the group of eccentric unapologetic villains to actually like each other (even if they don’t always get along). Like, sure they’ll fuck over anyone who gets in their ways but they draw the line at each other; the loyalty in the group is real and it is strong even if they sometimes fantasize about killing each other.

And I’ll say this too: I don’t want Vox and Vel to “spontaneously” find out the type of deplorable shit Val gets up to and suddenly kick him out of the group either; especially considering the fact that they’re all Overlords to-ge-ther, they should already know exactly what each other gets up to. They’re all in Hell for a reason too, let them act like it. Not every Hell-bound character who gets focused on needs to then start acting all altruistic and like they “just so happen” to be in Hell despite really being fairly morally “good” actually - aside for the killing and cussing of course. No, let them act like the sinners they are. Not everybody’s a rapist but not everybody gives a particular shit about rape when it’s happening around them either (‘it’s not their business’ so to say).

That’s all. Also, though, I didn’t get it with Nancy, Rochelle, and Bonnie (they were all magically culled and Nancy thrown in an asylum after they all betrayed one another) or with Uma, Harry, and Gil (ie: the basic concept of a group of villains who all like each other, even if there are differing power dynamics) I’d like to get it for once in HH, a show that can actually be violent and cuss and depict adult relationships (both platonic and sexual or romantic) that are varied and just a little contradictory and messy. I don’t exactly trust HH to do that well either though, but still.
