tbh i think i just find it more interesting to appreciate dean how he is and have zero interest in proving his general goodness. like maybe if i Didnt find that specific type of character so compelling id be more invested in mischaracterisation (though id like to think not <3).

but a lot of hellers/extreme deangirls dont approach spn like a horror show with the thesis 'family is hell' (which is what it initally Is) they approach it like a fantasy-comedy-action show with a funny bisexual mc and his gay angel bf. either because they're not interested or because theyre uncomfortable with the actual show thats there. which is their prerogative! like sure i guess. you do you.

but its interesting bc it means we have 2 fanbases which are rabidly different to each other and get completely different things out of the show and yet keep brushing up against each other. we parcel it into 'samgirl' and 'deangirl' but that makes it sound like its literally just Fans Of The Character when tons of samgirls (myself included <3) love dean. the real dean that is. (also even samgirl fandom is ripe w misinterpretation but all fandoms have that at least theyre kind-of misinterpreting the same show as me. deangirl fandom is something entirely different.)

Dean shows up to Stanford unannounced and the little sister who left home a few years ago is now a not-so-little brother. Dean reacts badly. Of course he does. When Sam says "I was never your sister" Dean hears "I was never YOURS". Because if he got this fundamental thing wrong about Sam for all these years, it means he never really knew Sam the way he thought he did. As far as he's concerned he had Sammy memorized, every aspect of her personality noted down in his brain like a private religion, and Sam's telling him that all of that was wrong. He's losing Sam. He's losing the idea that he ever had Sam. It's all about ownership, his little sister belonging to him, and now he's having that essential part of his world challenged. Dean's response is denial - "this is a phase, she's just confused". Until eventually he has to reconcile the Samantha he knew with this Samuel who's come into his own as a man. He has to recognize that he did know Sam - because despite this missing piece being put into place, Sam is still Sam. And he has to realize that if he wants to have (or frankly, own) Sammy in the future he has to adjust. If he doesn't get his head out of his ass he'll lose him forever.

i think it's interesting that samuel compares 6.01 dean to the idealised version of mary as his daughter in the same vein that the version of mary that dean attempted/attempts to emulate within his perceivable parentification is his and john's idealised version of mary. like in a very similar way to the idea that both john and dean have their idealised Sammy whose role fundamentally includes his exclusion (which is, by proxy, his inclusion) from the familial dynamic which influences his own desire to exist outside of this familial dynamic vs mary whose campbell familial role fundamentally includes her desire to exist outside of the familial role while she finds that she is unable to escape her inclusion within that role

and this is besides the more obvious idea that samuel does not know dean nor does he know, much less, understand the scope of dean's relationship with the nuclear. i think his comparison of dean to mary is much more related to his synonymy of masculinity and hunting that both hunters and the narrative have and dean's year-long existence outside of hunting; dean has strayed from the hunting ideal of masculinity and samuel constantly projects this onto dean despite his proving otherwise. like samuel does it again in 6.07 when he assigns dean a 'lesser' role while pairing him with a woman on a hunt
